ART THREAD
I have had the very great pleasure of commissioning some beautiful art to celebrate the release of my new novel Nine-Tenths. I'm going to share them all in this thread (and hopefully add to it if I'm lucky enough to be graced with more) so you can appreciate the talent of these incredible artists.
Tumblr media
by Christopher Winkelaar
Nine-Tenths is set in a world where all the nobility in Europe are homo draconis - shape-shifting dragons who have the ability to take human form. Every culture in the world have dragons living among the humans, but the European and Asian nations are the only ones where dragons were historically elevated to the roles of monarchs, nobles, and emperors.
In a world where the American Colonies rejected British rule, this meant they were also rejecting draconic protection--and so while they won their Independence in 1793, they were soundly trounced in the War of 1812, losing all of New England, including New York State, to the British. They were absorbed into the Canadas, except for New York City, which was reclaimed by the Dutch and re-renamed New Amsterdam.
The Canadian colonies expanded west, as they historically did in our world, through a series of broken treaties with the Indigenous peoples of the continent, and the reprehensible colonialist practices which put the settlers in power today. It also means they were able to expand further south, without the Americans to bump up against.
This also meant that the Americans were unable to expand as far south and west as in our world, coming up against Indigenous dragon-protected lands, such as the Oniagara, or Aztec and Incan empires, which grew further north after Spanish contact, and flourished.
Unlike in the current version of Canada, the land was legislatively divided into much smaller provinces than currently exist, each overseen by a hereditary draconic Lieutenant Governor, who report to the draconic Governor of the Canadas, who in turn reports to the House of Lords in England (also dragons). Each province is divided into Duchies, Earldoms, and Marquessates, presided over by a noble dragon family.
As dragons are long-lived, the current Queen of England is Elizabeth (the first one). As she has not yet passed, the Kingdom of Scotland as yet remains separate from England. Ireland too is independent, the Irish dragons having beaten back the English ones. However, Wales remains a satellite colony of England, as the betrayal which brought about it's subjugation and the trickery around the hereditary title "Prince of Wales" still occurred. (This an important plot point).
Tumblr media
by @seancefemme
This is the first piece of art I commissioned for the novel, and you'll note it's now become the cover art!
Meet the heroes of our tale: barista and disaster bi Colin Levesque, stuck in the middle of his quarter-life crisis and crushing on his cafe regular, Welsh dragon Dav, the Marquis of Niagara (though of course, Colin doesn't know he's the Marquis, and thinks Dav is just some minor noble with nothing better to do all day than hang out and read).
Tumblr media
by @ibrithir-was-here
Colin works at Beanevolence, an indie cafe in downtown St. Catharine's, in the province of Upper Canada (Southern Ontario in our world). It's owned by his bestie Hadi, and he was only supposed to be a barista until he'd graduated. But now he has his Sustainable Tourism degree, and no clue what to do next. He feels completely stuck. Luckily he has Dav to distract him.
Except that one day Dav distracts him too well, which results in a kitchen fire. As an apology for the inferno, and to help the cafe get back on it's feet while the repairs are under way, Dav volunteers as the new bean roaster, creating incredible and (and ultimately social-media viral) coffee roasts with his fire-breath.
Tumblr media
by @ibrithir-was-here
Colin and Dav start a flirtation at work.
Which leads to...
Tumblr media
by @teejaystumbles
Luxurious dates and late-night smoochies.
Tumblr media
by @pinkpiggy93
Which also goes a little bit viral. See, it turns out that the Marquis of Niagara usually keeps a low profile, and his sudden romance with a human has the gossip rags and tabloids all in a tizzy.
But more than that, it puts Dav under the scrutiny of Francis Simcoe. He's the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, a dragon with a hate-on for Dav, and the perfect ammunition to ruin his happiness.
Because, you see, it's against dragonic rules for dragons to be seen to be laboring in service of humans... and Dav's new gig at Beanevolence is about to--forgive the pun--land him in hot water.

The Third Blade: Hinalung - Handheld Speartip
Five days left to go before the launch of the Gubat Banwa Kickstarter campaign! Gubat Banwa is a TTRPG that allows you to play as warrior Kadungganan in the Sword Isles, a fantasy setting as colorful and intricate as the Southeast Asian cultures from which it draws inspiration.
Tumblr media
I've been posting the weapons I've been drawing for the game as kind of a countdown, leading up to the launch on October 10. I was planning to do this for Swordtember, but sometimes you gotta shift the goalpost a little bit. 3/7 blades down, behold the HINALUNG
Tumblr media
This multi-purpose blade comes in a few different shapes and sizes, but in general they are symmetrical and double-edged. They don't get much longer than one's forearm, and more often than not have handles wrapped in rattan lashings.
Tumblr media
(Blades by Tatang HImanggo and one of his students- a certain Arnold; As shared by Biboy's Sharp Edges) If I'm not mistaken, the term "hinalung" is Ifugao- referring to a certain group of indigenous peoples in the Philippine Cordilleras- though the usage of the blade itself was widespread across the mountains of north Luzon. Nowadays, it isn't just Ifugao smiths making them, and a number of contemporary smiths from across the region seem to lay claim to the blade. In any case, the blade is of the Cordilleras, unconquered by Spain.
Tumblr media
(Blades by Ifugao Traditional Blades) One more thing of note is the open scabbard, which seems to be common among blades in that region- not just the hinalung. Some of them boast enough space for more than one blade to be sheathed, and are often sold as novelties. The first example below has a large hinalung in the middle, joined by a pair of pinahig. It can very quickly get out of hand. These X-in-1 sets are usually sold as novelties.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Blades by Orinn Mongalini/Panday Anitu Mumbaki)
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
(Photo from Ifugao Artistic Blade)
Now for the fun part! You may be wondering why the handle is shaped the way it is, with that triangular opening near the base of the blade? Or perhaps you read the title of this post and you already know where this is going?
Tumblr media
They double as spearheads! The handle itself is steel folded in to create a hollow socket, allowing the hinalung to be mounted on a wooden shaft, turning it into a spear. Supposedly, this spear-form was used for hunting. You can see the hollow socket more clearly here:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
(Blade by HanYan Blades)
Tumblr media
(Screencap from a video by AJ Blade Reviews testing the blade as a spear; Blade by Lakay Paul Dulnuan Sr.) As mentioned previously, the Philippine Cordilleras were never conquered by Spain, and as such were able to carry their traditions with a little more ease into the present day. It is very much apparent in the blade culture. Present-day smiths in the Cordilleras still forge hinalung, some of them stating they do it in the traditional way, others admitting to hewing to more modern methods.
Tumblr media
(Antique from the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology)
Tumblr media
(Modern build by Lakay Pabian, photo by Ramon Bathan) Like I said before: Blade culture is alive and still developing. One of the Five Major Mahamandalas of Gubat Banwa pays homage to and gleans inspiration from living cultures like those I mentioned here. If you want to know what the first half of that sentence means, check out the game and its Kickstarter!
The Gubat Banwa Kickstarter launches in 5 days! Check it out here:
I've watched this game be started, written, and developed by like- one guy, who just managed to drum up enough interest and meet enough people willing to help shape the dream, and make it what it is today. It could not have gotten this far without all of them. Still, it remains a very small team of creators from the global south, with very limited resources. We would dearly appreciate any and all help in getting the word out about the game!

ATLA Culture HC
Sorry I have a few notes on this one
A/N Since most of Titan Bending's readership is from AOT, I want to apologize that this doesn't have any reference to that world in it. I just don't have enough personal thoughts to add to the world-building from AOT to do an entire post like this.
A/N Even though there's no mention of AOT in the HC themselves, I still did the same tags for this as my fic because I want anyone that might read my fic to still see these because they are kind of important for upcoming chapters.
A/N I mention different songs and artists throughout this post. Let me know if you’d like me to make playlists for each of the nations. I think that could be fun and might do it anyway.
Idk if this is a headcanon or actual canon but music is super important to all of the cultures in ATLA
I talked about this a bit in my fic Titan Bending, but with English being my first language, I sort of consider that to be a universal language that most people learn in tandem with their native language (that’s how my brain makes sense of what should be language barriers between, well, everyone)
Northern and Southern Watertribe
Their native language would be something like Russian (I’m thinking like the native tribes of Siberia.)
Sokka and Katara speak this native language.
Similar to how a language like Spanish has morphed into different dialects, there are different dialects of the language for the north and the south.
There are a lot of sea shanties that are important to the culture as well as warrior songs. This includes basically anything by SKÁLD.
I also see songs like Savage Daughter being from the Watertribes.
The song Labour by Paris Paloma is a sort of revolutionary cry amongst the women of the Northern Watertribe.
Sokka and Katara are both really good singers
Sokka plays guitar
Again, this might be actual canon and not just in my head but the beads that women wear in their hair directly correlate to how wealthy they are. I’m almost positive I saw this in a video now that I’m typing it, so I’m sorry I can’t give that creator credit, but an example is that Katara’s classic hair loopies and braid are a much more functional hairstyle for daily work than Yue’s extravagant hair.
Fire Nation
So the Fire Nation is obviously based on Imperial Japan, that’s not a headcanon that’s fact. As such, they would speak Japanese.
I listen to a lot of Asian music - Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese. I have found a wide variety of songs that I would sort of characterize as “Fire Nation.” Thus, I HC that each of the Fire Nation colonies have developed thier own languages which is how I reconcile in my noggin all of the different songs I attribute to the Fire Nation
Earth Kingdom
It’s widely known that the Earth Kingdom is very diverse, so with that comes a lot of different cultures melding together.
The Sand Benders definitely speak Arabic. They were clearly designed with a sort of Middle Eastern aesthetic in mind, so I really hope that doesn’t come across as racist in any way, I just speak Arabic and I really want them to.
Side note to this, my HC takes it a step further and I want to believe that they’re Bedouin because I’ve done a lot of research into the Bedouin and when I lived in Jordan I got to experience a lot of their culture and they’re who I know the most about so if I ever write about the Sand Benders, those are most likely the customs I will incorporate
All of the romance languages are present throughout the Earth Kingdom
Ba Sing Se has different districts for the different cultures throughout the Earth Kingdom and there’s a big market with live music in the Inner Ring.
@mochminnie @sseleniaa @naruwitch Tagging you all so you don't miss this, even though it's not directly a part of the story <3

The Sign of Four: The Story of the Bald-Headed Man
The Victorians were rather into what is known as chinoiserie, the European imitation of Chinese and other East Asian artistic traditions, although the popularity had somewhat peaked by this point.
The stethoscope had been invented in France in 1816 by René Laennec and the two-ear version was commercially available from 1852. The practice before and without one - see A Study in Scarlet - was to listen to the chest by applying your ear directly too. This was a bit awkward when dealing with a woman, the reason Laennec invented it in the first place.
We've seen Tokay before, in "The Last Bow".
Since tobacco came to Europe, there have been people who couldn't stand the smell. James I of England/James VI of Scotland wrote A Counterblaste to Tobacco in 1604, one of the earliest anti-smoking works. He would impose an import tax on tobacco, then later made it a royal monopoly.
It was also considered taboo to spoke in front of women for much of this period; hence the use of smoking rooms. It was also seen as unladylike for a woman to smoke at all; if she did, it evoked an image of prostitution. Unless you were working class, in which case women widely smoked.
Hookah comes from the Hindustani word "huqqa". Hindustani is also known as Hindi-Urdu; Hindi being the Devanagari-written version used in India and Urdu the Pakistani version written in the Persian alphabet. Both countries have tried to make their two versions somewhat distinct; Hindustani is not used in official terminilogy in either. In speech, the two are pretty much mutually intelligible, if you keep things simple.
The hookah remains popular in South Asia and the Middle East; smoking is not specifically prohibited in the Quran, but in recent decades, a number of very prominent clerics have declared it haram (forbidden). In much of Europe and North America, indoor smoking bans cover hookahs, places that offer them have had to switch to tobacco-free version.
In any event, hookah smoking is really bad for your health - you're basically inhaling the equivalent of 100-200 cigarettes in a single session.
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot was a French realist painter. Works of his can be found in the Louvre and New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, among various other galleries.
Pondicherry, which we've seen mentioned before, is a city on the south-east coast of what is now India; it was a French territory at the time - the British had taken it more than once, but returned to them each time, the last time in 1814.
The lightweight division of boxing today covers weights of 130 to 135 pounds. The current British lightweight champion is James Tennyson, but he has not fought a professional bout since a technical knockout to Jovanni Straffon in 2021.
Agra, located in Uttar Pradesh, is best known as the location of the Taj Mahal, built on the orders of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan between 1631 and 1653 as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal after her death in childbirth in 1631. He is also buried there himself.
£500,000 in 1888 would be the equivalent of over £54m at 2024 values. Not a bad chunk of change.

Fragments of the Buddhist monastery at Miran (Xinjiang) 3rd-5th C. CE by Titasa (Tita/Titus?) & other unknown artists. More images (and sources) on my blog, link at bottom.
I'm not 100% sure what nations the people in the photos belong to. They lived in Loulan (aka Kroraina). They used the Indo-European Gandhari language in their writing. They wrote in Kharosthi script which was also (at least partially) used by the Saka of Khotan, Kushan Empire, Sogdians, and Bactrians. Some suspect the artist (or one of the artists) may have been a traveler from the Roman Empire because of his art style and the name "Titasa".
"The Miran murals, now housed in the National Museum of New Delhi, are too delicate to travel (see frontispiece) but Stein found thousands of other items at the many desert ruins at the ancient town of Cadota, north of present-day Niya. These included Gandhari documents in Kharosthi script (cats. 27, 40, 44, 45, 46, 47) 74, 75, 76, 77, 89, 141): administrative records, letters and legal documents, some sent by the king of Kroraina to the ruler of Cadota. They offer a unique glimpse into the concerns of these oasis settlements, especially when placed in context of the archaeology. Stein explains how the sites had been abandoned over time and thus cleared of any items of intrinsic value, but ‘...the manifold other relics, however humble, which had safely rested in the sand buried dwellings and their deposits of rubbish... all help to bring vividly before our eyes details of ancient civilisation that without the preserving force of the desert would have been lost for ever.'
Miran, Cadota and the other towns of Kroraina seem to have been largely deserted by the fifth century. Defeated by the Northern Wei in 445 and with a warming climate making the route through the Lop Desert to Dunhuang no longer viable, people started moved out. The irrigation canals silted up and the dwindling population was unable to provide enough labour to continue to make the land sustainable.
Although not an ocean of emptiness, the analogy of an ocean for this area is a useful one.” The peoples and cultures moved like currents some, like the Gulf Stream, travelling great distances while retaining distinct characteristics, influencing the lands they passed by. Others were merged into more powerful currents, or soon settled on the ocean floor to nourish local cultures. The Yuezhi/ Kushan and the Xiongnu were examples of the first — powerful swirling currents whose origins and many sub-currents are difficult to map. The Hephthalites, who controlled Khotan, Kroraina and Gaochang as well as Gandhara and Northern India by the fifth century, were another powerful current. They exemplify the difficulties of Central Asian scholarship. Even though they ruled a considerable area for over two centuries, had their own language and script and minted their own coins, historians are still trying to piece together a coherent pictures of the nature of the people, their language, social structure, beliefs and art."

 o𓆩♡𓆪 INTRODUCTORY; MY HAPPY ENDING PT.1 | HEADCANON 𓆩♡𓆪
╰┈➤ featuring; boku no hero academia! drummer! bakugou katsuki! x lead singer! fem! reader
જ about; Heartbreaks. Aches. Dreams shattered. You feel like there was no bridging between you and your goal as an artist. Especially since the bridge that connected you that was your ex-boyfriend, Shindo, who you met at club. Now, that you’re separated. You thought, that was it. No more.
જ contents and warning; profanity cause bakugou is on it, asshole bakugou, cigarettes, smoking, angst, drummer bakugou, band au, fluff, romance, drama, paparazzi, cheating, break ups and many more that I have definitely missed.
જ author's note; I actually have a lots and lots of chapter about band au which needs to be revised and re-written. unedited.
Tumblr media
First of all, let’s talk about the band.
Bakugou, Kirishima, Denki and Sero are all in a band called ‘Tokyo Lights’. Mina being the stylist. Jirou is the producer of the band
It’s a pop-rock band. They rose to top quickly because of one song called ‘Turning Jane’. It was a hit all over Tokyo. Many praised the band,
Many turned those praised towards their lead singer, Camie.
Her vocals are phenomenal and really fits the band’s genre.
It has been months since they have debuted.
A total of 2 albums. Interviews. Promotions. An Asian, European, North America and South America leg tour.
People were much more keener when it was publicised that the lead singer Camie and drummer Bakugou are dating.
Fans have picked up the tension between the two and they were suspecting that they may dating.
So, when it was confirmed, when Bakugou and Camie was photographed together outside of a club, late at night sharing a very intimate kiss. Bakugou had his arm loosely slung around her neck holding a cigarette.
Fans and shippers were loosing it.
They were at their heights. So successful. So known .
But that all came crashing down when Camie was due to leave the band.
It blew up everywhere. Bold Headlines.
“Lead Singer Camie leaving Tokyo Lights”, “Lead Singer of Tokyo Lights, Camie, is announced to leave the band due to disagreements”,  “Lead Singer, Camie and Drummer, Bakugou reportedly have broken up”, “What’s the future of Tokyo Lights?”, “Camie’s Out! What could this mean for the band?”
Everyone genuinely thought this was it for them. No more Tokyo Lights.
Fans are sad.
Now, they’re wondering if they are going to cancel the world tour because of they have no singer.
Even more than that, the band itself, they were worried that this was the end of their dreams.
They were drinking their sorrows away at a nearby club, the ones they used to perform at before they blew up.
Bakugou especially was drinking heavily. His first serious relationship just ended and he might not be able to perform as a professional musician anymore.
It was a lot to digest.
He was on his 2nd bottle of whiskey. He was pissed drunk.
The rest of the boys, Jirou and Mina was telling him to take it easy.
But, he told them to fuck off and they wouldn’t understand how he was feeling.
He is right, they don’t. They don’t know what it feels like experiencing heartbreak and watching your dreams crumble right in front of your eyes.
Then, the club owner announced that there is another band who will be playing tonight, he even joked that this band might be the next Tokyo Lights upcoming.
That band consisted of you, your boyfriend, Shindo and his friends.
You were a lead singer and he was a bassists.
You meet him in the same club, Shindo thought you were cute and you happen to have a real knacker for singing.
You are incredibly talented. You are passionate about it
After going out for a month. He asked you if you wanted to sing for  his own band forming.
This was the turning point of your relationship.
He got to obsessive at the thought of being on top. Being the next Tokyo Lights. Being better than them.
It was affecting your relationship and his friendship in the band.
Shindo was constantly pushing for the band to be top perfection. It means rehearsing almost everyday. No breaks.
One wrong note means that you would be screamed at by him. Among other plethora of things.
You remember your friend, Hiro got into a terrible accident which led to him needing crutches.
Shindo got furious because he couldn’t play the electric guitar for a while cause he’s dealing with an immense pain.
It was exhausting. Your friends complained about him behind Shindo’s back.
Hell they were frustrated about reaching out to you afraid that you’d tell on them.
But you joined in to complain.
For reason, anything going wrong with him meant that you’re the one always being blamed too.
Shindo would whip his head around and scream at you,
“What the fuck is wrong with you?”
“I didn’t-”
“You’re always fucking up. It’s dragging everyone down. You’re not putting any effort in.”
No matter what, he never took responsibility for his fuck ups.
It’s mentally fucking you up.
So, when you got a gig into this club. The club that Tokyo Lights used to frequent at.
Shindo got worse.
He looked at every single one of you and warned you.
Especially, you remember him having you pressed up against the wall and looking at you straight in the eye.
“Don’t fuck this up for us.”
To him, this was his opportunity. He wrapped with the idea and it was destroying everything around him.
Before getting up the stage. You remember him slamming you on the walls,
“If you fuck up. I swear to God, (First name).”
You could only stand there and nod. Unable to speak.
You were petrified.
“Fix up your hair and makeup. Get yourself pretty.” Shindo commands then pressing a kiss on your forehead.
You did as you were told, your band mates were looking at you with concern but you reassured them with a smile on your face.
So, you took a deep breath in and following them up stage. Walking up to the microphone stand.
“Good evening, everyone!” There was a chorus of cheers, “We’ll be performing two songs today. I hope you enjoy it!”
Everyone in the club whoops in excitement.
The first song was okay. But, the second song was a disaster.
Yo Shindo was mostly to be blamed. He was out of sync compared to everyone.
Every single member of the band would occasionally glance over to him.
You can tell that Shindo was getting annoyed and frustrated.
So after that flop of a performance.
He was fuming and it was all directed towards you.
“We’re done and you’re out. Get out the fuck out of my face.”
You don’t whether if you would be relieved and happy about this or sad.
You’re conflicted,
You don’t know.
Kirishima lit up
“I think we just found our lead singer.”
Long story short, you became their singer.
Everyone was open to you except Bakugou.
He made sure that you knew that.
You are not welcomed by him, every little thing you did was criticized.
Even the song you were writing was told it was shit.
Because it didn’t fit their genre, the lyrics are not as great as what Jirou wrote, you’re not singing it right etc.
There was no difference working with Shindo and Bakugou.
But you paid no mind since their band is moving fast.
His relationship with Camie was public.
He is still wrapping his head around their breakup.
Then, it was news everywhere.
“New Lead Singer of Tokyo Lights!”, “A Rumored New Lead Singer”, “Flop or Not? New Lead Singer”, “(First name) an is the New Lead Singer, Who could this be?”
Your photo was plastered everywhere. New Lead Singer.
They were mixed reactions; good, bad and neutral.
When the new recorded song ‘My Happy Ending’ was released.
Some of those reluctant fans were swayed because you sounded great.
You are a great singer. They had hope.
But, when Tokyo Light announced that they’ll continue the Tour and with you instead.
People were cancelling their ticket.
Now, they lost money and the band has to downsize to a much smaller venue.
You get it, people are sentimental. You know why they wouldn’t be open so easily.
Bakugou voiced his opinion that it was a terrible idea. All of you are losing money.
Why the hell would you perform with them?
That’s when Kirishima puts his foot down.
Either they continue as a band and move forward or they move forward without him.
This is their dream and if they stay miserable forever, they won’t continue at all.
He said nothing.
It was the day of the concert,
You’re nervous.
You are dressed pretty. Knee high heeled boots, some cute skirt and a corset.
Bakugou had some jeans on and the chain on it and no shirt on. Showing off the tattoos.
He always played without the drums.
He does that thing too where he stick out his pierced tongue.Twirls the drumsticks around in his fingers
You get on stage
Holy fuck.
Your stage presence was fucking phenomenal..
Kirishima, Sero and Denki has never seen anyone so charismatic and enthusiastic with performing on stage.
You were jumping around and got everyone to do it too.
Your crowd control was amazing as well.
This was the first time the band was fire up ever.
Not to mention, it felt like you didn’t even need to do it because Tokyo Light’s fans are doing your job for you.
You had to motion for them to turn up your microphone louder.
At the end of the concert, you were heaving very heavily.
“Tokyo. You’re crazy out here tonight. It’s turning me on.”
They all screamed their heads off.
“But, unfortunately, we have to end it for tonight... Not without a final song.”
You performed the song you had with Tokyo Lights, ‘My Happy Ending’
It was insane that a good majority all managed to memorize the lyrics.
It made you feel good since it’s your first ever published song ever.
“Goodnight, Tokyo!”
Once, you got off stage. You were surrounded by the rest of the band, Mina and Jirou swarming in a a tight hug. So excited.
“That was awesome, (First name)!”
You were so happy.
But, Bakugou aside in disapproval,
“Just cause you did something well doesn’t mean you’re a part of this band.”

IF YOU'RE A PART OF ANY FANDOM, YOU SHOULD SEE THIS
The 2023 AO3 stats just came out, and it doesn't look great diversity-wise. User centreoftheselights/@centrumlumina has conducted yearly reports on the top 100 ships, the characters in them, and amount of racial and gender diversity overall. She also included one for the top 100 femslash ships, and conducts a census on ao3 users themselves. Below is a direct quote from the overall August 2022-August 2023 study:
"There are 58 M/M relationships on the list, 11 F/M, 8 F/F, 18 Gen and 5 Other... Of the 204 names on the list, 30 are women, 2 are non-binary, and 3 are characters of ambiguous gender, compared with 25, 1 and 6 in the 2022 list. In total there are 102 white characters, 67 Asian characters, 6 Latino characters, 6 Middle Eastern or North African characters, 4 Black characters, and 2 Indigenous characters, as well as 10 racially ambiguous characters and 8 non-human characters. There are 84 total Characters of Colour, which is 13 more than the number listed in 2022."
I'm pretty bad at analyzing but I also know this means we need to do better. Only 8 F/F relationships? POC ships in the minority?? There are more non-human characters than the total number of black and indigenous characters COMBINED. We need to uplift media and fandoms that cater less to a white, privileged audience and support small projects that maybe don't star A-list celebrities. Also, support the strikes- there would be no content without our working class writers, actors, and artists. Fandoms aren't for everyone if they're not about everyone.

Dokomi 2023, post-report
Post-greetings from Dusseldorf Germany: I had a great time at the event, it was such a lovely place. Everyone was very kind, polite, and helpful with the language difference. I had a great neighbour (Margaret), and was able to meet a number of fans and friends in the EU. I hope everyone who attended also had a good time.
(Extra big thanks to the staff and volunteers who took care of us all weekend---special shoutouts especially to Arian and Thomas who went above and beyond. We couldn't have made it without you.)
Both my assistant and I are back home now, so I thought I'd take some time to do a write-up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While it's not my first featured rodeo, it's not often I get invited to an event so massive in scale. Seeing my own illustration highlighted in various places is always heartwarming.
I was told Dokomi doubled-up in numbers from the previous year (85k--->150k attendance). Despite the daunting numbers, it didn't particularly feel clustered because the all the other halls are openly spaced nearby, and you could freely walk between them. The ceilings are also very tall and well-lit by both top lighting and natural sunlight.
I really liked the fact that the event is badge-less and that there aren't too many check-points (security was very polite regardless). I managed to make some time to wander around freely and felt very relaxed in the space. Although I heard there were a small number of reports, I think that comes naturally with any small or big event. It's always good to be mindful of yourself and your neighbours. Overall, it's still a relatively safe and casual congregation.
In particular I was impressed with the many services offered to artists (such as food catering, equipment, etc), as well as the staff response rate and attentiveness. It might be difficult to return any time soon, but I'll always remember the positive experience I had at Dokomi.
It has been a hectic week, but I'm glad I was able to attend nontheless, and I'm grateful for all the feedback. Thank you kindly for visiting my booth if you got the chance to.
For the event, I had a giant vinyl print of Pikkorin made, which seemed to have been eye-catching. It did quite well with the crowd, which made me happy.
Tumblr media
There were also a number of attendees that expressed interest in my originals. Artists getting love for their original works is always a big mood boost.
Tumblr media
(attached: a sketch of Pikkorin, for a commission request)
Overall, it was a different crowd at Dokomi from what I'm used to, both in vibes and in preferences. For those that have attended North American conventions exclusively, it's just comparatively way more chill here.
But what surprised me most was the overwhelming love for Kaitou Jeanne and Yu-Gi-Oh!. Both of which, seemed to be a big part of many visitor's childhoods. I heard it was in part because of dubbing.
Tumblr media
(Of course, I too, purchased a wonderful Yu-Gi-Oh print from another artist because it was so beautiful.)
Tumblr media
(image: a sketch of Atem, drawn on shikishi) (Other at-con sketches will be slowly posted to my instagram)
Tumblr media
(My only other purchase was this adorable bag by The BunBun shop, which was too cute to ignore.)
In terms of location, the convention center and the place I was staying is near or around Little Tokyo. I was surprised there was such a thing in Dusseldorf, but it seems like Asian food and mild curry is quite popular here. Actually, the majority of the week I was eating Japanese food so I didn't quite feel like I was in Germany yet.
My hotel had this adorable side case full of figures though. I especially adore and appreciate the Jibanyan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the con ended, my assistant and I did actually manage to go walk around here and there. We meandered around King's Avenue. It was a bit cloudy all week, which felt nice and cooling.
We walked all over to all sorts of cafes, bakeries, and meat shops.
Tumblr media
Lunch was tasty...German potatoes, cheese, and sausages are an entirely different experience. The potatoes were so good, I couldn't help but wonder if it's simply a different strain/variety, or just darn good cooking (or both).
We also got this slow roast pork with mash and beets one night, that was juicy and tender on the inside, but crispy on the outside, and I can't help but miss it already. Also, tax-inclusive pricing is 10/10.
It's regrettable I could not stay longer but alas, work awaits.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Final thoughts:
Although it may be difficult for international artists to attend Dokomi given the cost and distance, I think the experience was still very fun and worthwhile. The food alone was worth it.
If you get the chance to, plan well and thoughtfully. I recommend it.
Literally the first thing on google: “Orientalism, Western scholarly discipline of the 18th and 19th centuries that encompassed the study of the languages, literatures, religions, philosophies, histories, art, and laws of Asian societies, especially ancient ones. Such scholarship also inspired broader intellectual and artistic circles in Europe and North America, and so Orientalism may also denote the general enthusiasm for things Asian or “Oriental.” “ - brittanica.com
And so many other sources. Where the fuck did you see “Middle East”??? Where??? Especially when the word “oriental” has always been used to refer to Asia and Asian cultures???
Dude. Orientalism by Edward Said — the cornerstone text in postcolonial studies — is the reason we see Orientalism as a negative word today, instead of a mere descriptor of an artistic and intellectual movement (which is the definition you listed: ask yourself, what’s wrong with Europeans studying Asia? It’s the accompanying project of imperialism that makes Orientalism actually harmful). The book critiques the political ramifications of Orientalism and it was primarily about the Middle East, because when Europeans wrote about the Orient in the 19th century they usually meant the Near East. “Oriental” only began to encompass “everything east of Istanbul” much later.
to recap: the issue with Orientalism is that it contributed to the justification for imperialism and colonialism by positing the West as rational and enlightened, in stark contrast to the Orient. Orientalism does not mean “Westerners taking inspiration from Asia is bad.” Westerners taking inspo from Asia can be icky, or odd, and maybe ATLA can fall under that category, but that’s a matter of taste and not morality.
Coty powder compact designed by Leon Bakst, Made by Coty Inc in Paris, France, 1935-1955.
The founder, Francois Coty believed the aesthetics of the packaging to be as important as the product. After his successful artistic partnership with designer Rene Lalique in the early 20th century, Coty approached Leon Bakst to design the Air Spun powder box. Leon Bakst is celebrated for his colourful exotic costumes and decors created for the Ballet Russes, which prompted new fashions in dress and interior decoration. This colourful, exotic aesthetic can be seen in the design of the powder box, where fluffy white powder puffs with black and gold handles float against an orange and gold background. Bakst’s original powder box design was made of Moroccan leather with gold leaf embossing. However, these boxes were expensive to manufacture and Coty paid his customers to return them when empty. They were then sent to Japan where the gold leaf would be scraped off and then reused. Bakst’s design was later modified into a cheaper cardboard version by Coty’s commercial artist Georges Draeger. The design of the packaging created an impression of luxury and prestige, while still being mass produced. These ‘luxury’ items were made even more accessible to middle and working class women by packaging them in small quantities and creating gift sets and co-ordinating product lines. Coty Air Spun powder was very successful, selling in Europe, North and South America, Australia and Asia. It was so popular in Asia that the ‘Rachel’ colour was created specifically for Asian skin tones. Coty is an internationally renowned beauty product and fragrance company that was founded in Paris in 1904 by François Coty. The company was acquired by the fragrance division of Unilever in 2005. In 2010 Coty had it’s headquarters in New York City and had become the world’s largest manufacturer of mass-market fragrances, aligning many of its new fragrances with celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, David and Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez and Calvin Klein. Nikolai Gerene (1810 - not before 1871)
INTERIOR
1830
The watercolour by the Moscow artist Nikolai Gerene depicts the exotic “Oriental” interior of a room in a classical mansion. It is a clear manifestation of the passion for the East that arose in Russia at the end of the 18th century. In the 1820s and 1830s (during the Caucasian and Russo-Turkish wars) it reached a climax: there was a fashion for “Oriental” boudoirs, and Turkish smoking rooms or divan rooms.
Mediaeval suits of armour – helmets, a metal breastplate, chain armour and gloves – hang on the walls of the room decorated with the paisley motif. There are both European and Oriental weapons: round Asian shields, daggers, scimitars in scabbards, bows and quivers with arrows, war horns, saddles, stirrups and much more. In the room there is a wide sofa covered with lion and tiger skins; in front of it is a carpet decorated with arabesques. The master of the house is depicted on the sofa wearing a beshmet, a Circassian coat and a headdress typical of the North Caucasus. He is smoking a hookah, next to him is a tobacco-holder with an open lid. On both sides of the sofa, near the walls, there are pieces of furniture new to the Russian way of life: racks with long smoking pipes, Chibouks. At the sofa there is a pouffe with a pet monkey that peacefully coexists with a lap dog. A sea shell, a skull, and glass and porcelain vessels are placed on the shelf; Chinese vases stand on pedestals in the corners of the room.
The combination of the armoury room in the spirit of European chivalry with Oriental exotics testifies to the desire of the young and undoubtedly educated master of the house to follow the dictates of the latest fashion. It is no coincidence that the statuette of Napoleon in the next room noticed by the artist proves it. According to Pyotr Vyazemsky, “you inevitably come across it in the den of every curious and reflective contemporary”.
Our poll results are in! 🗳✨
*cracks knuckles* Let’s dive in and talk about it (: [Grab a snack and something to drink because this is about to be long. Yes, a bitch made graphs lmao Sue me] Alrighty, let’s do this:
Tumblr media
: : : : : : : : : : :::::::::::::::::::::::: : : : : : : : : : :
Tumblr media
I can't remember where bpwf was first released and the order of its premiere in each country but it's interesting to see that the majority of fandom [who participated at least] are from North America. Also Asia being the third highest group was fascinating because at least when it comes to Twitter, I’ve noticed a lot of the Namor/Shuri fan art has come from Thai and Korean artists. They are seriously carrying this fandom and I'm here for all of it.
ALSO: Random, but where are my Antarctica Nashuri fans?? 😭 I’m also curious to know how Africa has received the Black Panther franchise all together over the years. Do they resonate with it? Do they find it offensive/ overly dramatized? I’m curious. If you are a fan who lives in Africa, can you comment on your experience with this? I'd be happy to know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To be honest, I’ve always assumed that the Marvel fandom [along with superhero spaces as a whole like DC and what not] were male dominated but this poll gave me some hope. I am curious what parts of fandom men frequent more vs women. For example, do Comic Cons ring in more women, more men, half and half? With fan art, do majority of artists identify as women, men, other? It’s interesting to think about. I also love seeing women/fem identifying individuals show up in these spaces because countless times we are made to feel like an inposter and harassed for our interests in comics, games, movies, shows, music, the list goes on. Questioned down with trivia, fact checking and all sorts of BS ultimately trying to prove that “you aren't a real fan". Don't ever let anyone make you feel like you have to prove your knowledge of anything to be interested in something you like. ESPECIALLY if it is coming from a man child guy.
ALSO: Hi all trans, non-conforming and alternative gender expressing baddies! Know you are welcome here and pls enjoy your stay at my humble blog abode. 👋🏾💜
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s amazing to see how diverse this fandom is! I didn’t expect that we would have such high numbers of black/brown fans/shippers. As a black mcu fan myself, it’s exciting to see us show up in fandom. Fandom has unfortunately been heavily white/Eurocentric for a very long time, which has slowly changed but we still have a long ways to go in it’s inclusivity. With the increase of bipoc characters and the actors who play them, I look forward to this continual progression.
ALSO: It’s been heartwarming to witness Mexican, Indigenous, Lantix fans feel seen with bpwf and Tenoch, Mabel and Alex's performances! I remember how enamored the black community was with Chadwick and the first BP. We were hyped to have this treasure of a movie, which I assume is similar to how the Asian community felt with Shang-Chi and so on. It's been said countless times before but representation truly makes the world of a difference and the power of the bipoc dollar should never be taken lightly. We cause real change when we support something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There will always be a spectrum of ages in any fandom but I figured the majority of people were probably within this age range. It may be due to the timeline of when the mcu was born and how it has progressed alongside millennials? This also explains why I keep seeing fans make posts about their age gaps with Tenoch and wanting to be his questionably young gf 😩 [get in line]
ALSO: Shoutout to the 55+ folks in the fandom! I have a sneaking suspicion yall are some of the coolest people 🤘🏾
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay *inhales exhales* I know I'm going to get flak for this but let's hop into it lol I saw the scale sway back and forth for a minute but it mostly stayed between White Wolf [Bucky Barnes] and Iron Heart [Riri Williams]. I myself personally love both answers! My annoyance is not with shuriri, but with its fandom. They have been some of the biggest instigators/bullies since bpwf has dropped. I've seen all kinds of mental gymnastics from saying the nashuri fandom would rather see shuri with a killer than support gay love [like what??] to Letitia is clearly lesbian because of her attire [pls be fr] and everything in between. It’s so unwarranted and I never see Nashuri fans doing the same thing back. Enjoy what you like, and leave the rest behind. It's such an easy 1+1=2 concept and yet, it goes over people's head still. It’s honestly disappointing when a fandom turns you off to a ship/character, especially when the ship is lowkey dope. Something that reminds me of this was the stucky fandom when the Captain America movies came out. Y’all.......when I tell you this fandom had me STRESSED 🥴. I saw racism/ deliberate exclusion of Sam, hate towards Sharon Carter just because she was a woman, you name it. They annoyed me so bad that I began to dislike Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers as characters [trust me, it made no sense lol] I couldn’t stand seeing either one of their names pop up. It took some of the Avenger movies [and honestly the sambucky fandom + Sebastian Stan/ Anthony Mackie's friendship] coming out years later for me to even be remotely cool with the idea of Bucky Barnes again. Anyways *drinks water* I'm getting stressed all over again just thinking about it lmao Long story short, don’t be an asshole. Enjoy YOUR flavor of ice cream and try not to shit on others and their differing flavor of choice in the process. Trust me, it's easier than you think.
ALSO: If you are a shuriri fan that hasn't been hateful/ problematic, this isn't about you boo [yall are good in my books! 😘]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crying that the #1 answer was “Bitch me!” because honestly mood. Jokes aside, I can’t really imagine Namor with another partner. It's probably largely due to the fact that Shuri was the main character we see him interact + bring his guard down with [outside of Namora?] This is also coming from someone who has not read the Namor comics and am very new to him as a character. If you have any knowledge you want to share in the comments, pls do ✨
ALSO: I threw in the Sue Storm comment to be annoying *teehee* but it was interesting to see how many people actually agreed with this statement. Maybe I'm just a horse with blinders about this fandom but I’m not really pressed? I’ve seen people argue that Ryan's current iteration of the Namor character wouldn't be in this type of relationship [along with people saying Tenoch wouldn’t go for it either] but I guess we'll just have to wait and see what unfolds *tries not to stress while we wait for future iterations of Namor and the fate of his character's arc/ Talokan*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The question on everyone’s mind! Although the delusional side of me was bummed that yall weren't more chaotic and went full "yes!", my logical side agrees with the final poll 🥲. Again, I'm not pressed about mcu and what they put out, whether it favors this ship or not. At the end of the day, I’m still going to vibe like I’ve been doing. If nothing else, I just hope we get to see these two characters and their rich dynamic again because Marvel can't ignore how the world reacted to Shuri and Namor. And hey, sometimes Marvel listens! Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie were on a mission after fans brought up a potential team up and after that, those two found every excuse to bring up a potential movie in interviews for YEARS until finally *boom* 🇺🇸🦅 The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Show 🦅🇺🇸 was born. Miracles do happen everyday rofl [I know these two examples have nothing to do with one another but let me have this lol]
ALSO: I only trust these characters in Ryan's hands so I'm hoping he's the first in line to direct whatever this future dynamic ends up being.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was cool seeing what other protagonists this fandom is drawn to outside of Shuri/Black Panther. I’m curious to know what other ships y’all also enjoy [feel free to drop them in the comments if you care to share]. I feel like a lot of the top picks in this poll I also resonated with, like Iron man for example. I don’t know what it is but there is just something about a genius character with a mix of charisma/ big softy + sarcastic energy that will do it for me every 👏🏾single👏🏾 time 👏🏾
ALSO: Not everyone sleeping on Thor and Hulk?! 😭 I feel bad that I left out Ant-man [especially with Quantumania just coming out] but you can only do 10 options on Tumblr polls and it was between him and Captain Marvel so….a choice was made…..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one cracks me up [and yes I had too much fun making these summaries which I find highly accurate] Also, I have no beef with any of these characters btw 😅 I truly believe that a hero is only as interesting as their counterpart. If your villain isn't captivating, it takes away from the hero + their storytelling potential and vice versa. The poll was split between Killmonger and Namor at one point [which if these two ever met/ were on screen together like ??? They have free reign to completely destroy my life. I welcome all calamity that ensues.] I'm not going to survive Namor and Kang in the same film this coming Avengers: Kang Dynasty movie.
ALSO: I didn't choose him but Thanos has been one of the most impactful/ compelling villains we’ve seen in the mcu thus far. I mean, he’s literally responsible for like 3 major films in the mcu + Josh Brolin is just amazing at what he does in general. This is brave to say but it was lowkey bittersweet to see his character's arc come to an end [obviously it was a huge relief but yeah]. Don't come for me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one was just for fun since I recently made that tenitia rant post but it was cool seeing some of you come back with your own film ideas of what Letitia and Tenoch could act in together. I'm so down bad for them that I'm game for absolutely anything. Romcom? Let's do it. A Podcast of them reviewing their favorite foods from their cultures? I'll eat with yall. Music video? Where's the link? I don't care what it is. Someone brought this up but I really wish we got more game interviews with them like them reading thirst tweets, answering the web's most searched questions, a joint hot ones interview, something! They would have killed those! Bring them back!🗣️ Bring them back! 🗣️ Bring them back! 🗣️
ALSO: Letitia has already voiced a character [Nooshy in "Sing 2"] so now I need Tenoch to do the same. I would love to hear his voice in something. It would realistically be in Spanish since I know the majority of his projects have been thus far but idgaf, I’m still showing up *turns on closed captions* [shout out to everyone who also started to learn spanish after this beautiful man came into our lives]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And last but not least, your blog feedback <3 Thanks again for giving your input on this. My blog is slowly starting to grow and I'm having a lot of new people interact with my page so I wanted to do a quick temperature check of what people are feeling. At the end of the day, I'm aways going to stick to what feels authentic to me and what I want to post because if you're not liking what you're doing, what are you doing it all for? But I will definitely keep this feedback in mind. For the people who are new or just coming across my blog, here are some examples of what I'm referencing in this poll: fan edits [1, 2, 3] rants [1, 2, 3] song recs [1, 2, 3] Tenitia [1, 2, 3].
ALSO: I thought I was doing the most with the amount of Tenoch posts I was blogging already but maybe not. Don’t worry, I'll find more ways to post our baby girl (:
Tumblr media
: : : : : : : : : : :::::::::::::::::::::::: : : : : : : : : : :
WOW, YOU'RE STILL HERE!? Nice 🥰 Seriously, thanks again to everyone who participated in this completely unserious poll. I've never done one of these before but now that I know what to do and not do, I may make another one in the future. We'll see. Continue to stay tuned for future Namor/Shuri + Tenoch/Letitia shenanigans 💫
