What exactly would you call the relationship between kamakura and schuichi . One of the reasons I always refer to it as a father-son thing (other than it being funny) is cause I don’t know what else to really call it..? It’s the same problem with the ultimates weird split personality’s
So I was wondering if you had a name for it
The name I would probably pick for it is just uh. Complicated. I’m gonna ramble QUITE A BIT (and probably SPOIL SOME FIC STUFF if you haven’t read all of TSSN) so putting this under a read more:
I wouldn’t say father and son, there’s an implied like… type of care there that Kamakura doesn’t have for Shuichi. Some people have mentioned Frankenstein and the Creature as a comparison, I’d definitely lean more towards that. It’s a weird mix of creator/creation, and also like… the creature from Frankenstein themself wanting to make someone else like him so he isn’t eternally alone.
Kamakura only knows how to treat Shuichi the way he was treated, and because he made Shuichi he thinks Shuichi should act the way he wants, that’s the simplest, least spoiler-y way I could put it. He cared about Shuichi the way a sculptor would care about their sculpture, to turn out right and be what it’s supposed to be. He cares about Shuichi, in some way, because Shuichi is like him, the only person he thinks could potentially understand him and be like him, and Shuichi just… refuses to do that. Refuses to be who Kamakura thought he would be and chooses people Kamakura envies can’t understand over and over again.
So, like long story short: Kamakura sees Shuichi as everything he feels he shouldn’t be, as something he feels ownership over, as his magnum opus and greatest failure simultaneously, and as some wretched undead abomination that needs to stop pretending it’s a living thing.
And as a BONUS: The Ultimates kiddos (the THH gang) don’t really have split personalities, Hope’s Peak’s codes make them act on like… old instincts and subconscious ‘programming’ telling them to act a certain way and do certain things they were made to do: kill, protect, observe, etc. the crappy personalities they took on came from Junko, she was always there after the codes to mold them into something cruel and self conscious and angry.

Hello and welcome!
Replacing my pinned with a list of the stuff I've written for anyone checking my account out. Heh. Everything is sorted by fandom, and then word count! (And if there's something I should add to the tagging, please feel free to send me a message about it so I can make the edits.) Enjoy... hopefully!
RWRB
some part of me came alive - 10,979 words [college-ish AU, 5+1]
"Bye David." David's head snaps back to Alex's direction, eyebrows furrowed ever so slightly you'd think it wasn't even there. Alex, having just removed his glasses again as he yawns once more, doesn't see it. David takes a couple seconds before slightly shaking his head, like he's just imagining something and is now actively wiping the thought away. He opens the door before he responds. "Bye Alex."
(Or: The five times Alex unintentionally calls Henry by his dog’s name, and the one time he does it on purpose.)
Francesca - 10,189 words [graphic depictions and references of violence/abuse/injuries]
Once, in a much worse place before all of this; Alex had worked for someone with one side of his office overflowing with books. He'd read all sorts of things there: Anatomy, selected works in philosophy, Oliver Twist, war hero accounts, law. Anything he could get a hold of in the dark, really. Among those books were a bible. There's a passage there that stuck— something he'd only read past but had barraged into the walls of Alex's mind three years ago, Book of Jeremiah, chapter 17, verse 9: The heart is more deceitful than anything else and is desperate. Who can know it?
Love Songs in the Key of Liam - 8,152 words [Liam POV/centric, 5+1]
It's fucked. He's fucked — Liam, that is. There was no way this was going to work. Ever. What's the next worst thing to growing up closeted in a typically close-minded neighbourhood? Probably developing a crush on your best friend who lives in said neighbourhood. (Or: The five times love songs reminded Liam of his now estranged best friend, and the one time it reminded him of someone else.)
Terrible Things - 4,038 words [Hanahaki AU, hurt/no comfort]
"How long?" That, he can answer. "A year or so." He croaks out, not really wanting to strain himself any further.
water in my hands - 3,521 words [sickfic(?), has references to illness, hurt/no comfort]
It takes Alex a good amount of time to realise; sometimes love just isn't enough to keep the world going, even if he desperately wanted it to.
no question (he'll hold your heart if you let him) - 2,837 words [June POV/outsider POV, post-canon]
June doesn't think much about it at first, putting the box along the pile, but she belatedly realises what it is and gets an idea. A satisfied grin makes its way onto her lips when she finally finds it, an edition of Astrotalk that detailed star sign compatibilities. June doesn't open the magazine all the way to the Libra section, stopping short at someone else's instead. (Or: June finds a box that contained one of her teenage fixations and goes through it for old time's sake.)
Smoke Slow - 2,026 words [shotgun kissing oneshot basically]
“Hey.” Alex says, just for the sake of saying something, the silence between them wasn’t stifling but he didn’t want to risk their interaction coming to an end just because he’s not engaging enough. Henry gives him a sideways glance. “Teach me how to do that.”
“Do what?”
“That. The shotgun.” For a moment, Alex briefly considers how idiotic that probably sounded to Henry. It wasn’t a hard task to mimic, but Alex had long thrown out his composure out the fences of Pez’s house when Henry put the goddamn stick into his mouth.
i'll be happy (just to have known you) - 1,855 words [hurt/no comfort]
Henry resigns himself to the reality that Alex—albeit distant and unattainable—still managed to break through his dismal world and grant him a light he never imagined was still possible to exist. This was enough. This was more than he'd ever expected for himself. It was the universe's way of extending an olive branch in response to the cards he'd been dealt with. He'd be stupid not to take it.
dreamy little you - 1,666 words [crack-ish AU, post-canon]
"Of course, love, but would you love yourself if you were a worm?" This visibly stumps Alex. If the way his mouth just opened for a rebuttal and coming up empty is anything to go by.
only got a hundred - currently at 4,008 words
An ongoing collection of 100-word drabbles written according to the Brownstone server's prompts.
Haikyuu
Ceilings (he thinks it's not real, it is) - 6,009 words [light angst and pining with a happy? ending]
“Yo, you sleepy?” Takahiro meant to say that no, he isn't. That Issei looks stupid with his hair messed up like that. That he should be asking Issei that, with the bags under his eyes speaking for themselves. Instead, what comes out is, “I miss you.” It would be so easy to take the opportunity now. But still, Takahiro is terrified of ruining things. Or: Takahiro has graduation blues, and Issei makes him feel better, but things don't just end there.
Bloom - 1,444 words [two-dialogue challenge oneshot, retrospective? angst/no comfort]
Matsukawa Issei is not much of a sentimental person, save for special occasions where he has no choice but to reminisce.
Cruel (what your mind can do for no reason) - 1,012 words [light angst/comfort, implications of dissociation]
Issei struggles through a bad mental health night, Takahiro breezes him through the tail end of it.
Shameless (US)
big guns out, shoot now - 3,257 words [first kiss oneshot]
It's kind of out of character for Ian, really, he's always careful about not blurting out or doing shit that tapped into his feelings on the brunette, around the very subject of his affections. Has been, in fact, for the last two years and counting. Not that it got any easier to maintain, there are always slip ups (Exhibit A: right here, right now), but that's solely his problem.
On the Off Chance - 5,780 words [soulmate AU, ongoing]
To say Ian was relieved when he hears Mickey confirm how he did not, in fact, get his soulmate mark just a couple days after coming of age would be a huge understatement. (Or: Soulmate marks only show up when the younger of the pair turns nineteen– which isn’t uncommon, to say the least.)

May I hear about pirates? The solas/trev? 👀
Thank you, Bear!
this one is another old Solavellan one that I did write a bunch of, and planned and had a whole outline!
I can no longer remember how the idea appeared, but it did, and it was simply Thedas, but make it pirates? The base premise is that Solas gets captured by pirates, and somehow they think he's a good hostage (he's not tho) and they take him with them. There's an immediate attraction between him and the pirate captain.
Ofc; he's not the hapless naturalist civilian he pretends to be, but used to be part of the notorious Evanuris pirates -who betrayed/sold out a bunch of other pirates -with Solas failing to play both sides. He is trying to recover lost treasure, and when he gets captured by Trevelyan and her crew, he tries to modify his plan so they can help him. He didn't account for falling in love with her, of course.
(you can see where the story comes from I hope heh)
I don't think I'll ever complete it, but I did have fun spinning it in my mind. I did initially try to make it work with Iwyn, but it just didn't suit her. She's far to diplomatic and patient for what I wanted, so Veronica Trevelyan was born for this. I don't think this one would work as an original, as the fun thing was putting all the DA stuff into an AU pirate mirror.
some chapter 2 stuff below the cut. Becasue ofc the sexual tension is early in the arch - this is me writing
“How did you end up a pirate anyway, Captain Trevelyan?”
He’s bolder, or drunker, and he asks questions he shouldn’t. After everything, he’s surprised to find a whole pirate crew, and a fairly functioning one at that. There aren’t many elves, but maybe the whole thing was worth it, in the end.
“You know, a sad story.” She drinks and passes the bottle. “Fifth daughter of a governor, barely noticed. Ran after a man, he gave his heart to someone else, but he gave me a ship instead.”
“Sounds like it’s quite a story.”
She shrugs.
“It’s a good life. I have what I need, mostly.”
“Do you miss him. The man who spurned you.”
She laughs, high clear.
“It was a childish infatuation. It wouldn’t have ended well. I mean it did, I suppose, given that I’m here. Hawke’s a good man.”
“Captain Hawke is quite infamous, known to harbor dangerous fugitives. I doubt many would call him a good man.”
She snorts, and drinks, and leans against him.
“They know shit. Dangerous fugitives indeed, like runaway noble women.”
“Are you implying you’re not dangerous?”
She turns to him, and smirks. Her eyes are luminous, and her skin reflects the moonlight, the swell of her breasts indecently exposed by her blouse. He swallows.
“What do you think, Solas?”
Their lips meet, crash, inevitable. She grabs his shirt and pulls him closer, prying his mouth open with her quick nib of teeth and probing tongue. Not that he takes much convincing, answering readily in kind. She tastes of brandy and sea and sweetness.
“I think you’re very dangerous indeed, Captain Trevelyan,” he says, when they finally break apart.
“Call me Ron, Solas.”

Does Mobox87 no like Renata Rennings? seems to make less stuff of renata and he even makes her suffer a lot and give her a bad ending and make william no love her like in the 2015 version, but i thought mobox87 made renata? why would this be so? plus not to be mean but i seriously hate when goldbox does william x vanny like what the f is this?? i dont like it, why cant he just make william x renata or at least not have bad ships like whats worse is that mobox87 is ruining hello kitty and his open minded series is fucked up and i really dont understand whats wrong with them, was mobox always like this? it makes me very angry to know that someone that inspired me heavily is not such a good person overall..
but thank you so much for being there to spread awareness, i really appreciate you and your help, have a nice day/night! 💜
(Sorry my bad english heh)
I don't know really, I think since Renata is an older OC people tend to fixate more on newer ones and newer content, and artists usually enjoy making content for their new characters if there isn't very much to add to their old ones, that's all I can really think about why he wouldn't make content about her any more, but that's not really a question I can answer since i'm not mobox. I agree with the idea that william x vanny is gross and weird, and I wish this hadn't been added. I guess he just wanted to change and add more things to the AU.
It seems that recently mobox's content has become a lot more disgusting than his past work, but some of the themes were still there and his content has hurt people even in 2015/16 in the beginning, I think it's just more noticeable now. :(
I am sorry that he is like this now, because he was an inspiration to so many young artists. I hope you are doing okay and have a nice day as well! - mod springtrap

HEYA THERE XEYA
IT’S ME
1:20 AM ELSIE
…I’m bored have my random thoughts that you can psychoanalyze/theorize about and a day’s worth of busy Elsie thoughts that she couldn)t write down because it rained so hard THE FREAKING OCEAN FLOODED and we were out of power ALL DAY like HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THAT STORM YET BECAUSE I SURE HAVE I WAS IN IT IT SUCKED.
For the aHiT AU:
Dusk so far is quietly taking the role of The Flower Girl, as far as I know
…Hear me out, after the events of this mess, she goes through a similar character arc, and Dawn takes Moonjumper’s role. Like, it kinda just fits. Cut, doesn’t belong, Sky, etc…YEAH. Might doodle some’a that if I have time!
Oh, look, train station added to the map. Sure hope that’s not VERY IMPORTANT.
And now for a small bit of insight into my characters. Massive TW for everything under the lack of a sun, once again.
“Tell me something you’ve never told anyone else.”
Easton: “…I’ve attempted to end my own life at least two times, heh, once on my 16th birthday, once when I was 18…It hurts to think about.”
Northa: “I’m terrified of alcohol. I-if someone’s had even one drink, I feel scared of them. Like they’ll spin out of control and hurt me. It’s a real curse on holidays.”
Dusk: “I’m scared that people will interpret all my affection wrong…I mean, I tell everyone I love them because I do, but…not romantically. I’ve had people ask if I have romantic feelings for Sun, Mix, Sigil…everyone I’m friends with. No??? I’m not even into girls?? I’m already happily dating Jessy?? I just…I just want to tell people I love them! And I feel scared doing so! I feel a bit anxious if I even hug someone that someone else will take it the wrong way…Drives me crazy…”
Alpenglow: “…I still kinda miss the depths. Cuz I felt really, really…loved…and it felt nice to not have to think about…anything. And I’m scared I’m a…a…a monster, I’ve seen the rain when I get sad…”
Fynn: “…I just really hope Miss Alpenglow is okay. She’s my best friend, yunno…the first one I ever had…I train real hard, just like she does, and I really wanna be her friend for….for like a real long time.” He spreads his hands for emphasis.
Ciana: “I’m scared that someone from the surface will…will think there’s something wrong with my husband. That he’s not worthy of…respect, just because he’s deaf and uses an implant. That thing lets him hear good as you or I, yunno…” She puts her hand, palm forward, on her forehead, making a “two” shape with her fingers. This is the sign for “stupid.”
Apollo: “…I just hope I’m good enough for her love, and…well, based on what she tells me, I am, heh…”
The Lord: “…I wanna marry her, but i don’t think I’m worthy…”
The Lady: “I wish to marry him, yet I doubt he would say yes, I mean, I’m…well, me.”
Chip: “…I wish I could express my gratitude to Clara for choosing my name…I mean, that’s a big deal, yunno! It’s my…well, my NAME!”
[REDACTED]: “…I’m not immune to the curse, I just ran from it. I just…agh, my heart is racing again, I can’t deal with all this anxiety!-“
[???]: He cried when asked for an answer, and did not answer further questions, simply sobbing and burying his face in his hands.
[OH BOY]: She laughs. “Relationships. I don’t get it. Friendships, romantic stuff, ALL OF IT. You people are WEAK, and you open yourselves up to be manipulated all the time. I mean, look at me, I hate that stuff, don’t got any friends, can manipulate whoever I want, and guess what? I’m the one sittin’ on the throne! HA!” They laugh once again.
yunno what’d be funny?
since Elsie, being a Cishet autistic who loves writing redeemable villains and cannot play a sport, who’s best at and likes writing redeemable/good cishet autistics that cannot play sports, it’d be a decent challenge for her to write a queer allistic who is utterly irredeemable (but pretends to be one of the “you can fix them” villains to manipulate people) and CAN PLAY A SPORT! WOULDN’T IT BE FUNNY IF I MADE ONE OF THOSE-
So I started reading “Cinder” from the Lunar Chronicles
…holy freaking HECK it’s good my heart cannot take it sidheijdhdiendhd
Yeah that’s it :D
THERE IS SO MUCH STUFF HERE WHY ARE YOU UP AT 1;20 AM ALPEN MISSES THE DEPTHS??? YOU WERE IN A FLOOD NORTHA IS SCARE DOF ALCOHOL EASTON ATTMEPTED AND MOST OF FUCKIGN ALL YOURE C I S H E T ???????

bad romance
Tumblr media
+ pairing: levi ackerman x reader
+ genres and warnings: friends with benefits au, friends to lovers au (well i guess that’s open for interpretation lmao), modern au—college au?, explicit smut, mentioned/implied virginity
+ summary: friends with benefits with your best friend since middle school is probably a bad idea. friends with benefits with your best friend since middle school who you’ve also been in love with for the past seven years—all for the purpose of her gaining ‘experience’ so she’s not nervous to do it with some other guy she has a crush on—is probably a really bad idea. levi ackerman is not known to make great decisions.
+ word count: 3.5k
+ notes: truth be told, i don’t even know if i like this; i took this from an outline/draft of a series i’d planned but know i’ll never complete. it’s kind of unedited too heh, also if you’re a minor pls do not interact
Tumblr media
Levi doesn’t think anything of it when he finds you on his doorstep on a rainy Saturday evening. It’s very much like you to show up unannounced and attempt to drag him into whatever activity you want to do that day. He’s fairly certain that Hange picked that up from you. Someone should tell her that it doesn’t work so well unless it’s you tugging on his arm sleeve and interrupting his otherwise peaceful evening.
So, for a while, everything is normal. You make fun of him for his use of, admittedly overpriced, organic butter when he toasts you a bagel; he makes jabs at you shuffling around his apartment like a semi-wet chihuahua, and all is right with the world.
Until it’s not. Because half-way into whatever stand-up comedy Netflix special you’d persuaded him into watching with you, Levi’s had enough of your nervous ticking. He doesn’t know if you think that he wouldn’t notice, but he does. And he knows it’s not the result of you still being wet or cold from the rain, seeing as you’ve long since dried off and warmed up.
You’re focused on the show (ironically, focused to a point of distraction), you’ve been twiddling your fingers since it started, and you’ve been fidgety since you stepped foot into his house. Quite frankly, he finds it insulting that you think he wouldn’t know something’s up by now.
So, he bends his knee, turns his body towards yours, lifts his elbow to rest atop the edge of the soft, and presses his cheek into his palm: “Alright, spit it out.”
“Huh?—What do you mean?” You look at him with wide, startled eyes. He looks back at you with unamused, expecting ones.
You crack a nervous smile, attempting to laugh off his command as incredulous, but instead, your voice comes out in what sounds like a pathetic attempt to cover up a lie—probably because it is, “What? Can’t I spend sometime with my favorite, surly psychology student?”
Levi scoffs at your batting eyelashes. The look he throws you seems to do the trick as you drop your facade with a sigh and shift yourself to face him on the couch too, your bent knees almost touching.
“Alright, fine, you got me,” you sigh, hands resting in your lap, “You, um... you know how you said you’d help me with, like, uh... sex and stuff?”
Levi raises an eyebrow. Of course he does. He watches as your eyes dart around the room waiting for his response. It’s cute as heck, and if the topic of conversation at hand weren’t about to get so compromising, he’d have probably teased you about it.
“Yeah, why?”
“Well… okay, so, you remember Jean, right? The guy I told you about?”
Levi hums. Yeah, he remembers Jean, but only because you can’t seem to shutup about him, not because he’s particularly memorable otherwise. He seems to be kind of a prick and a huge idiot, if you asked Levi; but, that’s kind of his default impression of most people.
“Jean and I hung out yesterday, and it was normal, you know? We just talked and ordered food and watched a movie,” you rub your palms along the fabric of your yoga pants—another nervous tick he’s been observing, “I don’t know if it was a date or not, because he didn’t say it was, and I don’t want to assume, but Marco keeps saying it was, and that Jean wants to actually ask me out.”
Levi blinks. “And?”
“And if he does ask me out—or even if he just… I don’t know, wants to try something the next time we hang out, I don’t want to look like a complete idiot!”
He refrains from letting a noticeable grimace take over his features; and washes away the unsettling feeling in his stomach with a nonchalant comment, “I doubt he’ll try anything on your first date.”
“But what if it’s not a date! People hang out just to hook up all the time.”
“I thought you wanted to date him?” Levi questions, but his it comes out as more of a deadpan statement.
“I do,” you answer, your response a little delayed and drawn out, “But, I wouldn’t mind just sleeping with him, either.”
“Bold statement from someone who’s never slept with anyone before.”
“Have I told you today that you’re an asshole?” you roll your eyes at him, “Come on, Levi, you know what it’s like to just want someone, but not want them, don’t you? You’ve had one night stands before.”
That’s true, Levi knows it, but it’s different. He wasn’t actively seeking advice from his friends about how to pursue and potentially please his one night stands because none of that mattered—well, the pleasing part, probably, but not the pursuit, or the feelings that came with it. Besides, Levi hasn’t felt the desire for any of that in a long time.
“That’s not the same,” he responds, trying to dismiss the muddy feelings crawling up his throat, “Look, if your Jean guy gets horny when you’re hanging out, just make out with him—make him jizz his pants or something.”
“That’s terrible advice,” you frown, “Plus, he’s probably done that with a million other girls.”
“Probably. Sex tends to repeat a few basic actions here and there.”
“For a psychology student, you sure are a terrible makeshift therapist, do you know that?”
“That’s not even the kind of psychology I study, never mind that I never asked to be your therapist.”
Levi takes great amusement in your huffing and the frustrated pout settling into your features, though he does his best to not let his own smile shine through. It’s probably futile; you can probably see through his facade, anyways.
“I just don’t want to bore him, Levi.”
Any trace of his smile vanishes as those words leave your mouth. Levi doesn’t retain much about this Jean guy you keep going on about, and he doesn’t care to in all honesty—but maybe if he did, he could understand why you’re so hellbent on pleasing the kid.
Levi doesn’t like it, not one single bit. His own feelings for you aside, he doesn’t like how Jean has managed to worm his way into your head and make you think that he’s deserving of any kind of affection from you, whether it be platonic, romantic, or sexual. Because he isn’t; Levi might not know him, but he knows that much.
Still, he sympathizes with you. He understands the pressure of navigating dating and hookup culture, especially in a university setting; never mind the additional expectations set on you as a girl. It’s shitty, all of it; the stupid feelings, the sense of uncertainty, the dumb-ass college pricks. You shouldn’t have to deal with any of that.
“You won’t,” is Levi’s simpler response, “Just don’t crush his dick in the process.”
“I wouldn’t do that, fuck you.”
“I’m just saying, you’ve never been the most coordinated person in the world,” he taunts, “If that’s what you came here today to ask me to help you with, it’s fine.”
“Really?—I mean, okay, I know we said that’s okay, and stuff, but I didn’t know if—well I don’t know what’s on the table or not? I do want to do that with you, but I also wanted to know if we could do… more? But I didn’t want to ask for too much and make you uncomfortable! Do we need a lesson-plan of sorts, because I can make—”
“You’re doing it.”
“Doing what?”
“Stalling,” Levi tells you, “You know, how when you get all nervous and ramble, then run out of breath or things to say, then get super quiet, and let the conversation die and be awkward again.”
You throw daggers his way with your eyes, and Levi has the audacity to smirk. “Forgive me, it’s not every day I ask my best friend if I can suck his dick for practice.”
“You can,” Levi replies, a little too nonchalant for the situation at hand, “If you want. I don’t mind. As for a lesson plan, that’s weird as shit, so don’t do that.”
“Really? I can?” you question again, an ironic child-like glimmer of joy in your eyes.
Levi chuckles lowly at your enthusiasm—your appreciation is so genuine, he finds it nothing short of adorable. And oddly enough, he’s a little turned on by it, too.
“Yeah,” he nods his head shallowly, “You can.”
You still have that gleam in your eyes, but Levi can feel the hesitation creeping up on you, and offers his guidance before he loses you to a shell of yourself. He shifts over to you just a bit, loosely holding your right wrist in his grip; holding eye-contact, he carefully pulls you up to stand in front of him.
“You can start,” he says, slowly tugging on your wrist, “By getting on your knees and taking off my pants.”
By the time he’s finished speaking, you’re already kneeling in front of him, and the sight is already enough to have Levi semi-hard in his pants; an almost embarrassed flush washing over his body as he comes to terms with the fact that he’s thought about this visual more times than he cares to ever admit.
You fumble with the zipper of his jeans, pulling them, along with his boxers to pool around his ankles. Your actions are careful and calculated, but you seem comfortable—maybe not with your skills, but with Levi.
His eyes stay glued on you, when you finally hold his length with a single hand, the other resting hot on his thigh. He leans over again, this time to rest a comforting hand on the back of your neck, eager to wash away any remains of your nervous resolve.
“Start slow,” he instructs, feeling your thumb swipe along the head, “Just move your hand up and down a bit, like—ah, yeah, like that.”
You seem follow his words carefully, focusing on the way his dick jerks in your hand. Levi observes you carefully and mentally notes that while he’d have liked it, not making out with you before this was probably the right call—he’d probably have creamed his jeans before this could have begun.
“You can grip it harder,” he tells you. You listen, applying slightly more pressure to your grasp; and it makes Levi groan, short, but strangled, above you.
“Okay?” you question, the genuine concern in your voice enough to make Levi’s gaze soften.
“Yeah, that’s—you’re doing good,” he says, rubbing his thumb against the nape of your neck habitually, “Twist your hand a little when you go up, you can—fuck, okay, yeah, that, like that.”
You snap your head up to look at him when he lets a moan slip through; nothing but pure enthusiasm and satisfaction dancing in your eyes. Levi grits his teeth when you do it again, your thumb sliding over the tip when you reach the top of his dick, and, Christ, you’ve got to stop looking at him like that.
You work your way into a steady rhythm, letting Levi’s moans guide your movements. You feel him harden to full length under your touch; and when he does, you move your hand faster, twisting your wrist around the length and squeezing just a pinch harder at the tip, without instruction.
He watches through lidded eyes, using his thumb to press lightly into the back of your neck. You move your free hand from his thighs, eager to add it to the mix, but Levi freezes.
“Nuh uh,” he shakes his head.
It prompts you to stop your actions, tilt your head and look up at him, and Levi doesn’t think he’s ever seen something so sinful. Your complete focus on him, neck craned obediently, eyes twinkling under your lashes; your position makes him want to kiss you or choke you or something in between.
“What—did I do something wrong?” you ask with wide and innocent eyes that make Levi feel bad for worrying you, yet send an erotic pulse throughout his body.
“Not at all,” he reassures you, fingers treading into the hair at your nape.
He’s setting himself up for failure, and he knows it, too—because, really, who agrees to teach a friend how to suck dick? Having you on your knees in front him, crane into his touch, and keen to all his desires, does nothing to mask the painful fire in the pit of his stomach.
It’s stupid to be this hungry, this possessive over you when he knows you come to him in hopes to learning how to please another man. But one, precious thought is enough to cloud over all of that, enough to put that sadistic smirk back on his face.
“You said you wanted to give me a blowjob, right?” he questions, pulling his bottom lip between his teeth at the shallow nod of your head, “Okay. Open your mouth for me, yeah?”
He barely pushes the tip past your lips when your head dips forward, tongue peeking out to lick the very top. Levi sucks in sharp air between his teeth, relaxing into the couch when your head bobs further, enclosing the tip of his dick in your mouth.
“Fuck,” he groans, voice hoarse when his hardened cock rests against the velvet wet of your tongue, “That’s it—just keep going, like that.”
He watches intensely as your head bobs onto him. It’s hot and wet and so much more than he’d imagined it would be; and he’s not too shy to admit he’s imagined this with you. He moves his hand to brush away the flyaways of your hair, smoothing them back and tangling his fingers at the back of your head. He carefully guides your movements.
It’s slow and steady, and normally, it’d take him a while to cum like this, but with the visual of having you on your knees for him, Levi can feel a faint warmth of his orgasm already beginning to bubble inside of him.
“This is okay, right?” you pull back, a thin line of spit trailing from your mouth.
“Yes, yes,” he answers immediately, unaware of his tightening grasp on your hair.
With a shy smile, you continue, taking more of him this time and carefully gauging his reactions. You move your head further down, testing your own limits, until you feel like you’re choking. You pull back again, with an embarrassed cough.
“Don’t push yourself,” he says softly, rubbing soothing circles into your neck with his fingers, “Guys can’t actually tell the difference between a regular blowjob and being deep throated, no need to choke yourself.”
“Wait, really?” you ask, resting you bum against your heels.
“You seem so surprised.”
“That’s just so… disappointing,” you crinkle your nose, “Men and porn make deep-throating seem like the end all be all of giving head.”
Levi chuckles in genuine amusement, “Well, it’s not, trust me. If any guy insists on being deep-throated just to cum, he’s a fucking liar. He’s getting off on the submission, not the actual feeling.”
“The submission?”
“Getting someone to be willing to listen to them, telling them what to do, how to please them,” he shrugs, “Makes you feel like you’re in control.”
“And that… that works?”
“Yeah,” Levi says, “But, judging by the tone of your voice, and how willing you were to suck my dick three seconds ago, I’d say the idea of being dominant doesn’t really appeal to you.”
You scrunch your nose again, “Does it appeal to you?”
Levi pauses, thinking over his answer, before giving you a simple, “Yeah. Most of the time.”
“Oh,” you hum, “I… I don’t think I’d like that.  I think I’d rather be told what to do, seeing as I don’t really know what I’m doing, anyways.”
“Ironic, considering you’ve never once listened anything I tell you do.”
“I was listening when you told me how to suck your dick,” you correct him, “You seemed to enjoy that.”
Levi pauses with a raised eyebrow. You don’t seem to back down, that matter-of-fact smirk on your face still mocking him. He leans over slowly, using his right hand to guide your head closer to him, and uses his left hand to grab your jaw between his fingers.
“You can be such a fucking brat, you know that,” he all but whispers, pursing your lips together in his hold, “Since you like listening to me so much, then shut up, and we can finish what you started.”
You blink, staring at him with a wide-eyed expression. He’s right that under any other circumstance you’d probably run your mouth off about him telling you what to do. But something about the way he knows what he wants and tells how he wants it makes you listen without an argument.
You nod, slowly wrapping your lips around the tip again, and bobbing along his length. Levi’s breath hitches when you hollow your cheeks slightly, a rough hand pressing down on the back of your neck.
“You’re really—god, okay, you’re good at this, you know,” Levi praises you, letting his right hand resume its position at the back of your neck.
If you had any doubts before about being submissive, the look on Levi’s face seemed to have wiped them away. Watching him throw his head back, his fingers gripping at your nape, his cock in your mouth—pleasing him seemed to be enough to please you, too.
“I wanna make you cum, Levi,” you voice your thoughts, letting a hand lazily jerk him off in the mean time, “Tell me what I have to do to make you cum.”
“If you keep going, I’ll cum,” he answers too quickly, a groan slipping through his words, “Trust me.”
“Come on, Levi,” you push, rolling your thumb over the slit of his dick. It makes him inhale sharply; you’re getting a little too good at that; at all of this. “Can—I mean, do you wanna cum in my mouth?”
“Shit, shit. Don’t say shit like that,” he curses, blunt nails raking and scraping at your scalp, “You don’t have to—I can just—”
“I want you to,” you tell him earnestly, “Please?”
Fuck, he was pretty fucking certain he’d told you to stop saying shit like that. Levi bites the inside of his cheek, paces himself; uses both of his hands to hold your head gently, while you use yours to wrap around his cock.
He grunts with a shake, and rolls his hips up, pushing himself further into your mouth, but not so much as to hurt you. It’s soon after that hot strophes of cum wet your tongue, and Levi lets you lazily jerk him off until you’ve milked his orgasm.
The room is silent save for his low moans and the squeaking of his thighs against the leather couch. When he’s finished, he slouches back, looking at you through hooded eyes, sweaty and panting, when you close your mouth and swallow.
You use your fingers to collect any remaining cum from his softening cock, and hum contented as you put your fingers in your mouth. Levi locks eyes with you again, cheeks flushed as you pull your digits out of your mouth, and he has to grip at his own thigh to gain the self-control to not get hard again.
You’re going to be the fucking death of him some day.
He shakes his head when you move backwards with a cute smile and pulls his boxers up, then his pants as best his can, not bothering to zip them up. When he’s done, you stand to your feet then straddle him on the couch, laughing lowly at his post-orgasm haze.
He doesn’t think twice about the way your hands clasp at the back of his neck, or the way his find their way to rest on your hips. You grab ahold of his jaw with both hands, holding his face in place. He thinks you’re going to lean in, but you don’t; just stay like that, your eyes roaming his glassy eyes.
“Are you gonna kiss me or just stare at me all day?” he questions, lips pulled into a knowing grin.
“Can I?” your question makes him frown in confusion, “Dunno, I heard some guys don’t like that after getting head.”
“Bunch a fuckin pussies,” he grumbles, leaning forward to close the gap between your mouths. He can feel you smile into it, and mimics your grin when you begin to press short, repeated kisses against his lips.
“You’re the best, you know that?”
He laughs when you continue to press quick kisses on his lips. “You’re not so bad yourself.”
You kiss him on the cheek, wet and dramatic. “Love you, Levi.”
Your face is right in front of his, but he averts his gaze, a different kind go warmth spreading throughout his chest when you flash a smile at him. He lets you kiss him again, longer this time, but still slow and sweet. He likes the feeling of you resting against him, affection lingering on your tongue when you kiss him.
It’s dangerous, but he likes the way you spark a fire in him. Sweet or sinful, it makes him feel boneless, wanted, loved.
Levi leans forward, rubbing his hands up your sides, and captures your lips in another languid kiss before pulling away to peck the corner of your mouth. “Love you, too.”
And he means it of course, but if Levi thought he had it bad before, he’s in deep shit now.

Oh-- I really really -really- liked your wolf hybrid Bakugou and-- if you don't mind, can you do one on Kirishima? Just the general headcanons, if this is too bothersome then you can ignore this once again- thank you
Just general headcanons you say? Okay, I had this written 2k words in before I got this ask and now it's at... ehem, let me take a deep breath for this;
Word count: 3.5k 💀 [of HCs 💀💀💀]
Why do I keep doing this to myself aksdjkd I love Kiri so much, my god! Thanks for the ask!! 💗
[ Masterlist ]
Hybrid!AU Kirishima Eijirou HCs
Tumblr media
× i mentioned him as a dog hybrid and we're sticking with it because it just feels right, yano? anyway!
× you found out about how the new hybrid shelter in your city helped bust a fighting ring
× which was horrifying to think about
× one of your friends explained the process to you and you were definitely interested in helping someone out
× shelters were still underfunded and didn't provide much to help the hybrids adapt to society
× so you found yourself in front of the shelter without a plan
× just a dream and a spare couch that could thankfully convert into a bed
× before you could chicken out you stormed through the doors like a mad person, catching the attention of the guards and the front desk man
× it surprised you how disinterested they were though; were they seriously the people that dismantled a whole illegal fighting ring?
× they called a sweet old lady to accompany you
× when you explained your situation her eyes sparkled, looking you up and down and nodding her head
× she took you through some hallways, showing you around the precinct, questioning you about what type of hybrid you'd want
× to which you honestly didn't know how to respond, like anyone you could help????
× it kinda pissed you off how she spoke about the hybrids like they were pets, suggesting you'd get a kitty or a bunny, since [her words] they were low maintenance
× is this really a good shelter?
× you looked around, finding prison like cells left and right, some with people that looked at you curiously, some covering from your glance
× they were locked in...
× some growling could be heard far away but the woman shook her head at you, disapproving gaze turned to the side as she took you further into the building
× another room, this time cells were bigger, a few occupied, yet covered from you, indiferent and uninterested
× a man was sitting on the edge of the bed, hands in his hair
× "Kirishima, boy, get up to greet someone"
× his red eyes snapped up, whatever he was thinking about slowly forgotten
× he blinked curiously as you hugged your frame, feeling uncomfortable, even ashamed to be there
× but a sweet smile took over his features
× "Hey! I'm Kirishima Eijirou!"
× it's really all it took for you to grow fond of him; he got up and came closer to the entrance of the cell and introduced himself in such easy-going manner you forgot about everything and anything
× he calmed you with his presence, even if it was very disheveled, with old ripped clothes and hair messy, painted red with obvious dark roots showing
× he had a black fluffy tail waving slowly behind him too
× you introduce yourself with his encouragement and mumbled how you wanted to help someone out today
× he just smiled at you, taking you in
× let me tell you something about dog hybrids: they can sense emotions and intentions so Kiri would be a very good judge of character and he really, genuinely took a liking on you
× the problem is how the fuck do you say out loud that you wanted to help him out
× because you sure as hell weren't going to say you'd adopt him; he's not a child? we're talking about a grown ass man here? literally looked like 6'4ft/1.95m?????
× it was so shameful, your gut turned as you cursed society and he sensed it, expression changing, falling a little as he saw you look very out of place
× "Hey, hey, everything's gonna be fine!" he said
× he told YOU that
× instead of YOU telling HIM those words;;; you almost burst into ugly crying, forgetting about everything else, your minuscule problems or shame or whatever and just nodded at him
× "Would you like to come home with me, Kirishima?" you said, ignoring the happy clapping the old lady was doing, watching carefully how his expression, clear as water, switched from easy-going and reassuring to shocked then hopeful
× "I'd like that" he breathed out "—a lot."
× as you went out the lady was telling him it was a shame they separated his group of friends, something about being sent to different shelters, how he had to be a good boy, to behave, yada-yada and seriously;;; he was taking it so lightheartedly, as if he was so used to this behavior or even was thankful for it?
× it was starting to get annoying, specially when they gave you a collar for him, like no fucking thanks, but you'd take care of it later
× since it was very random and unplanned, you were making mental gymnastics to figure out what to get and what to do first, like clothes, food—
× journey home was pleasant as he walked close to you, asking you questions about yourself with a gentle smile on his features
× meanwhile people got out of both your ways because he was intimidating and big and large but his smile screamed sunshine
× all while he never really mentioned anything about himself
× you made a point to ask him if he was hungry, to grab a quick bite at any restaurant you could get at then go buy some clothes and necessities
× you were so casual and this guy was so shocked
× i swear, looks at you blinking stupidly then ✨beams✨
× spoiler alert; big boy was hungry
× it didn't matter honestly, just seeing him eat without a worry [even if everyone at the restaurant was wary of him but got a stink eye from you] was a relief
× since you answered his questions about you, you decided to ask some about him; you were going to be roomies soon so might as well get to know each other
× shocked again
× stops mid-bite when you ask him something and stares wide-eyed
× doesn't answer but you can see he wants to and you're confused??
× "did I—... did I say something wrong?" you'd press, scared you'd spook him away or something
× he just gulps down and looks ashamed
× casually tells you they've been told at the shelter owners don't care about them
× 🙃 say what now bby?
× he kinda starts apologizing because he understands why you wouldn't wanna know and you put your hand on his; kinda mutes him for a second
× "Kirishima, we're gonna live together and hopefully be friends in the process, right? I'd like to know about you, as much as you're willing to tell me"
× [ falls in love right then and there ]
× he's met humans before, many actually—
× even in the short weeks he's been at the shelter he's seen people come and go and none talked to him like you did
× stares with stars in his eyes and chuckles awkwardly, blush on his face
× "You're really nice, [Y/N]" he said before eagerly answering your questions; course, it leaves you confused lmfao but you brush past it
× okay! shopping next, long story short it was very hard to find hybrid clothes for his size so you pick to change human clothes and adjust them for him
× as you again mention this stuff casually he's just awestruck
× when you got home, bags in hand, you were explaining to him how you really didn't have much; you were working to get a promotion soon but for now you had a couch that could open up into a very comfy bed, which he assured you it was enough
× you were lowkey unsure if he fit it because like i mentioned, big boi is big
× he does! so that's a relief but you started considering giving him your bed; you mostly fell asleep on the couch anyway and to be fair, it was really comfortable and you mention it as he looks around
× his head snaps at you, wide eyed, yet does not talk
× so you ramble bc that's something fun to do! "I mean I went to the shelter without a plan and uh, I want you to feel as comfortable as possible and maybe the bed is a better fit and—"
× Kirishima Eijirou sees: 💕💞💕💞💕💞💕
× has never been treated like this, like he's an... equal... something he'll take months to share with you, but we're getting ahead of ourselves
× the thing is this boy will fall pretty hard pretty fast, but will definitely take time to make a move
× bc he is respectful
× so he thanks you for the offer and tells you it's probably the best place he slept in all his life
× can your heart stop breaking for him? i mean it's a good couch but it's no luxury hotel bed???
× [ we need to pause, OP made herself sad ]
× ok, so he's really helpful around the house, and he knows how to cook!
× takes no time to talk about his friends, special his best friend that cooked for everyone at the fighting ring and forced them all to help and that's how he was pretty decent at cooking himself
× wasn't the best though, but followed instructions like a boss
× he lives for your compliments
× literally his tail wiggles with no shame
× seriously;; tell him he did a good job even at the dumbest thing and—
× puffs chest
× wiggle-wiggle
× "Thanks!"
× 🥺💕💞 make him stop, he's so cute
× did i mention he has like floppy black ears? Omg his earsssssssssshnnngggggggggg
× because they move whenever he walks and they're mesmerizing
× and one day that you're observing them for science [not because your heart was like 💘pom-pom💘] you noticed his roots
× remember when your heart broke for him? hah, have some more because as you asked him, he started telling you that he was pushed into dying his hair red for the spectacle, diversity and what-not
× reassured you he grew to love it now, being part of who he is
× also gets a little bit shy when adding he wouldn't want to change the color in hopes of finding his friends someday and for him to be easily recognizable
× you bought him hair dye that same day
× WHICH! apart from gaining extra 🥺💕💞 from him, it created a nice routine between you two!!
× you offered to dye his hair and it was such a great time; he made you laugh, conversation going just as easy whenever you talked, you got to know each other a little bit more and—
× heh
× at the end, after applying all the red hair dye, you massaged his scalp gently
× guess who melts in your hands? yes, giant ass dog-man melts into a puddle under your hands and it's the cutest fucking thing you've ever seen
× I'm serious, he sighs and leans into your gloved hands with zero [0] shame, eyes closed and peaceful expression on his features apart from a small smile
× you tease him and he laughs it off, but promise him you'd give him head scratches when he was finished with the dye, washed off and hair dry
× and you better deliver
× "Don't think I forgot!" he'd say as he'd hop on his make-shift bed in the living room by your side, tail moving from side to side
× as you start playing with his locks, he falls into your lap and starts snoring
× move an inch and he opens his eyes to look at you confused
× puppy eyes questioning you if you're leaving 🥺
× yep, you fall asleep together
× you point out to yourself that those puppy eyes will be the death of you
× he's a touchy guy, okay? since he's been touchy with you from the very start you never questioned it, even read on the internet that many hybrids descended from house pets need physical affection, like hugs, pats, scratches, all the bag, so it wasn't a big deal for you
× except it was a big deal because he's been around for a month and you're already catching feelings and that's bad because you did not bring him there to fall for him but to help him start a new life and—
× oh my god, what if he thought you were one of those people from the horror stories about hybrid adoption that only wanted them for one thing—
× no, no, no, nO, NO.
× anxiety was getting to you as the guilt of catching feelings for him, plus the fact that he was financially dependant on you for the time which would've made it even worse if he found out, PLUS he comes from such a rough life, he definitely needs a break and doesn't need his first human friend in forever to be a piece of;;;
× Kiri catches on this really constant and increasing feeling of anxiety; he starts to send you worried glances but doesn't know how to proceed
× in such a soft voice he asks if you're okay, if something is on your mind
× and since you weren't sharing anything but acted as if everything was alright even when he felt you lied, Kiri started to get worried too
× why were you anxious? why weren't you talking to him about it?
× oh, god, was he a burden? because he felt like one;;; did you want him out? he felt like an extra weight for you and wanted to do something about it but maybe you got sick of him? he felt unmanly...
× the fact that he knew he cared about you as more than just a friend made him even more anxious and it didn't help that whenever he touched you he heard your breath hitch or your heart beating louder; he got his hopes up then down because
× you smelled like people; people he didn't know, people he wanted to know because he needed to know why did you smell like them? were they a treat? were they potential partners? he really did not want to ask bc Kirishima felt like it wasn't his place to know
× as tension grew in the house you decided to gift him a new phone, ready to give him some news that reached your ears
× it seems Kiri himself liked to do sports and mainly jog to keep himself active and he's started to pass by the local dog-park to play with the dogs
× imagine your surprise when a few neighbors asked you if he'd be willing to train their dogs bc he's been teaching them stuff like once a week and the dogs listened
× big time dog whisperer; he says "Sit" to one dog and all dogs in the neighborhood sit too, you get me?
× so you said it would be nice for him to have his own money; not like you didn't help him without care, but you saw his face every time you bought something for him and really felt like he needed some real independence
× he's in ✨awe✨ because you came up with clients already that were very eager for dog training sessions, which he loved??? and suggested hours, wages??????
× and you gave him this new phone to help him with it if he's interested too?
× "Well, the normal price on the internet around the area is—"
× "[Y/N]."
× "Hmm?"
× "You're really amazing, you know that, right?" he'd have his lips curled into a sweet smile
× which makes your heart go crazy and this man notices how you get flustered
× loves it
× get ready for compliments; a lot of compliments just expecting your sweet flustered reactions
× he's slow at realizing your feelings for him because he beats himself down and seems himself as less of a man but tests the waters nonetheless and a d o r e s every time you struggle to thank him for said compliments and don't know how to continue functioning
× catches on and gets his hopes up
× and so you do
× listen, this is hilarious because you're both dumb idiots and want to be respectful towards the other meanwhile he hugs you tighter and for a little bit too long, loving how you melt into him, kisses you on the cheek and sees you get all flustered, looks at you like you're the only one to ever matter until you stop talking, turning everything into a giant mess of silence until you both grin at each other???? I'm getting second-hand embarrassment, just kiss???????
× and it happened with an accidental kiss
× you greeted him as he walked through the door, excited to tell him about your promotion, rambling about the take-out you ordered while he smiled at you
× and it started to be usual for you to greet him with a kiss on the cheek, right? just what normal roomies do, you know [mhmm~]
× he's taking his shoes off and knows the kiss is coming, but just before you press it on his cheek you whisper/squeal "I got the promotion!" to which he turns his head in surprise at you making your lips press together by accident [mhhhmmmmm~~~]
× cue both of you apologizing, looking like a mess
× he's blushing
× you both loved it
× why are you standing so close to each other?
× why did he lick his lips in daze while staring at yours?
× which one of you was leaning in for another kiss?
× it didn't really matter because he's kissing you slowly, taking you into his arms like you were made of porcelain
× glues his body to yours and breathes you in, lips locked, neither believing it was real
× lifts you up in his arms with no difficulty and smiles, both inches separated from another; "Congratulations..." his breath would fan over your face;;;;
× yeah, okay, he takes no time to confess, resulting in a mess of manly words skdjekldj you guys talked that whole night while cuddling and stealing kisses, you on his lap
× [ his nose brushing your neck; he loves your scent omg ]
× it becomes official pretty much instantly and then all your worries wash away
× all the anxiety, all the stress and overthinking, they've all been sorted out in one night and trust me, afterwards this man is pure honesty and loyalty
× he won't hesitate to talk to you about anything and will be such a patient sweetheart with you, listening to every word you say without judgment
× loves cheesy stuff? as in the most cliché stuff seen in movies? that's his shit right there; whenever you two see each other after some time apart [sometimes 5 minutes apart] he'd pick you in his arms and spin you around, then expect you to kiss him
× if you don't, i will skfjdkfk step aside 👀
× skin contact; please, touch him
× if you're not he sends you those famous puppy eyes and we all know they're killer
× sighs, happy to hold you tight against him, engulfing you into his big frame; yeah, you're where you belong, in his arms.
× everyone in the neighborhood loves him; it's ridiculous, seriously, because you find out he helped around all the time when you were at work and gained everyone's love
× makes an instagram account to teach people how to train their dog and becomes an internet sensation, a small celebrity
× also bc he's hot and sometimes posts working out pics
× skdksjs imagine this: makes dinner for both of you, lits up some candles, goes all in, then fucking posts it on ig saying "waiting for my baby to come home #surprise" forgetting you can see it lmfao
× you see the story on your way home and 🥺💞 "ye i love his oblivious ass"
× soft gasps when you tell him after dinner
× has the audacity to be surprised, like babe????
× Kaminari finds him through social media and this baby cries in relief for a good half an hour
× both team up to find all the gang
× guess who talks praises about you all the time? mhm, this guy right here is proud to have you
× and Denki has to deal with it;
× anywho! want to break him for good? tell him you love him for the first time
× GETS. SO. EXCITED. AND. EMOTIONAL.
× but forgets how to speak
× finds his words to say it back after staring at you entranced, grinning like an idiot, taking you in his arms and giving you a bone crushing hug while shaking in place
× he's never felt this loved and adores every second of it
× you're like a drug and he's deep gone, man
× tells you he loves you every single day

Can I request something where sans keeps making excuses to keep Grillby talking? And when confronted, he admits that he just likes hearing Grillby’s voice? 👉👈
Haha, so this was going to just be silly fluff, I swear, but...  Look I swear it all works out and it’s really cute in the end. I hope you enjoy!
Talk to Me
Word count: 3323 Summary: Sans wants to hear from his boyfriend more, but he goes about it the wrong way.
“Hello Sans, this is Grillby. I just wanted to call and make sure you’re alright. It’s been two days since I’ve seen you at the bar… I asked Dogamy and Dogeressa if they’d seen you and they both said they haven’t. Are you ill? If you are, I could bring something for you and Papyrus, or- ah, well, I’ve been talking long enough. Forgive my rambling. Just send me a message to let me know you’re alright? I hope to see you soon.”
Sans let the voicemail play as he laid in bed, relaxing a bit. It had been months since Grillby left that message. Sans had some kind of flu and was bedridden for a week. As soon as Grillby heard, he came over with canned soup, cold packs, and audiobooks, giving Papyrus a break to rest and ensuring that both of the skeletons were well cared for. The audiobooks had been nice, but they’d been nothing compared to Grillby’s voicemail. When Sans heard it, it occurred to him that he wasn’t sure he’d ever heard Grillby talk for that long in one go. The even rhythm of his voice was remarkably soothing. Sans had fallen asleep to that insignificant message more than once.
The skeleton felt a bit silly. He and Grillby were dating now. He had more than enough opportunity to talk to him. Something still felt off though. Even when they were outside the bar, Grillby was always a one-or-two sentences kind of guy. He never told any stories, he didn’t ramble on about his favorite subjects, and he never vented in length about his day. And then there was that phrase. “Forgive my rambling,” Sans muttered to himself, frowning. He’d heard that twice since he’d started dating Grillby, and something about it didn’t sit right with him. Speaking about dates with Grillby…
Beep! Beep! Beep!
Sans’s watch went off and he shot up. Shoot, he was late! Grillby had the evening off and they had agreed to meet up at the bar before going to MTT Resort for dinner. Grillbz made a reservation and everything! Sans hurriedly put on a black tuxedo-print shirt and then threw his freshly-washed jacket on top. That was about as close to fancy as Sans got.
Grabbing his phone, the skeleton took a shortcut to Grillby’s, where the bartender himself was waiting outside. Damn, he made Sans feel underdressed. Grillby had a black suit jacket on over his navy blue dress shirt, and it looked like he might have even ironed his usual bowtie for this. He was looking at his watch, making Sans feel a pang of guilt. This was what, the fourth time in a row he’d been late for a date?
Grillby didn’t seem to mind it. He glanced up and caught sight of Sans, smiling a bit. “I see you’re all dressed up,” he chuckled. “You look nice.”
“Not as nice as you, hot stuff.” Sans grinned, holding out a hand for Grillby. “Ready to go?”
Grillby nodded and took his hand. “Ready.”
Dating Start!
One moment, they were in Snowdin. The next, they were at MTT Resort, barely in time for their reservation. Sans had done a few comedy gigs at MTT before, so it wasn’t like it was a new place to him, but somehow going there with Grillby made it feel different. The lighting felt softer, the music seemed gentler, and when the two of them sat at their table, the smile Grillby gave Sans made the skeleton feel like he was dreaming. For the first time, MTT Resort Restaurant felt romantic.
“What are you thinking about?” Grillby asked, breaking Sans’s train of thought.
Sans chuckled. “You,” he responded honestly. “You make the whole room light up wherever you go.”
Grillby arched an eyebrow. “Well, I am made of fire.”
“Oh my god, you know what I meant,” Sans managed through his laughter. As he calmed, he gave the bartender a soft smile. “This is nice. I’ve been here a thousand times, but it’s different when it’s with you. A good different. You make everything better.”
Grillby blushed, smiling. “Sans… that was the sappiest thing I have ever heard.”
Sans grinned at his teasing. “Aww, you know you love me.”
“I do.” Grillby rested his arm on the table, opening his hand to Sans. The skeleton took him up on his offer and mimicked the gesture, holding Grillby’s hand on top of the table. Grillby ran his thumb over Sans’s knuckles, thoughtful as he looked at their joined hands.
Usually, from there, Sans would start the conversation back up with an onslaught of puns or start talking about his day. The skeleton’s thoughts drifted back to that voicemail. ‘Forgive me for rambling.’ Their talks were always pretty one-sided, huh? It didn’t seem to bother Grillby at all, but it bothered Sans. He wanted to hear his boyfriend ramble. He wanted to know what was going on inside the fire monster’s head. And, if he was being honest with himself, he just wanted to take a moment to bask in Grillby’s even baritone voice.
“What are you thinking about?” Sans asked.
Grillby hadn’t expected that question, looking up. “Us,” he answered simply, smiling a bit.
That wasn’t a satisfying answer! Sans pressed a little more. “What about us?”
“About the time we spend together.” Grillby met Sans’s gaze, eyes full of tenderness and beautiful firelight. “I have never felt greater happiness than I do by your side.”
Man, how did he manage to sound so romantic in so few words? Sans flustered, dramatically fanning his face. “I’m swooning. And you said I’m a sap? If I’m a sap,” he joked, “Then you’re the whole maple.”
Grillby chuckled. “So tonight’s joke theme is going to be trees, I take it?”
“You better be-leaf it.” Sans winked at him. “Hey, why do trees make the worst frienemies?” He waited for a beat, then said, “Because they’re the best at throwing shade!”
Sans sometimes wondered if Grillby would have laughed at that joke if it came from someone other than him. Whether or not he would, he was laughing now, and Sans wanted it to go on forever. Unfortunately, it didn’t. Grillby regained his composure and let go of Sans’s hand, picking up a menu. “While I hate to interrupt the pleasant-trees, we should figure out what we want to eat.”
“Heh, good one,” Sans mumbled with a smile as he picked up his menu. Aha! This could be the perfect opportunity! “You know,” he began, “I’ve been here for gigs, but I’ve never actually eaten here. All these fancy dishes sound super complicated. Can you explain some of this stuff to me?” Grillby was passionate about cooking, so surely he would have a few words on the matter. More than a few, hopefully.
Grillby glanced up over the top of his menu. “What are you in the mood for?”
“Uhh…” Good question! Sans hadn’t really thought about it. “I dunno. I’ll figure it out as we go?”
Grillby nodded and looked back down at the menu. “Alright.” He considered the dishes on the menu for a long moment. “What about the swiss steak? It’s a tenderized steak cooked in a pan with onions and tomato sauce. It appears in the recipe they use here they also add mushrooms. I can’t be sure, but as far as spices go I would guess- well. I’ve already explained the basics. Forgive me for rambling.”
“No no, you’re good! I…” Sans wanted to groan. Oh, come on! For a moment there, the skeleton had been able to get completely lost in Grillby’s voice, taking in every word. “I, um, I think that sounds good, but I want to hear about some other stuff first.” He scanned the menu, picking a random dish. “What’s, uh… beef stroganoff?”
Grillby tilted his head, locating the name on the menu with interest. “Oh, that’s another good dish. Stroganoff is made with small pieces of a marbled cut of steak, ideally sirloin or ribeye. The sauce is made with…” Grillby trailed off and adjusted his glasses. “Well, it’s a white sauce. It’s usually served over noodles.”
So. Freaking. Close! “Yeah, great,” Sans mumbled, looking for another food that might get the bartender talking. He’d seemed excited to share for a minute there, so why did he stop? It was so frustrating! “What about… how do you say this one? Cock-ow-vien?”
“Coq au Vin,” Grillby corrected gently. “It’s a chicken dish. The chicken is slow-baked with vegetables in a wine sauce.” He stopped there instead of going on as he had before. Darn. Operation Have-Grillby-Explain-The-Entire-Menu was a bust.
Sans ended up going with the ‘Coq au Vin’, mispronouncing it on purpose when he ordered so Grillby would give him that fond look of exasperation he loved so much. The skeleton chuckled and played innocent, shrugging. “What’s with that expression? I said it eggs-actly how you did!”
Grillby just rolled his eyes. “Sometimes I wonder why I ever chose to date a comedi-hen,” the bartender sighed, smiling a bit at Sans’s resulting snicker. “So how was your day?”
Sans shrugged. “Eh, pretty much the usual. Papyrus tried out that waffle recipe you gave him today. It was… interesting.” Usually, he would elaborate, but he had something else on his mind. Time for Plan B: Make Grillby the center of attention! “Hey, you used to live around here, didn’t you?” Sans asked, abruptly changing the topic. “What was that like? As a kid?” If there was one thing any monster could go on about, it was childhood memories. Right?
Apparently not. “It wasn’t significantly different from living in Snowdin,” Grillby answered simply, eyeing the water the waiter had brought him as if it were going to jump out of the glass. “Just warmer.”
And… that was it. That was all Grillby had to say about it. If anything, the bartender seemed to be talking even less than usual. Sans was starting to get a little frustrated. “I’m sure it was different. More monsters, the construction of the Core… C’mon, Grillbz, don’t be shy about it. What was it like?”
“Noisy.” Grillby pushed the glass of water a bit further from himself. “That’s part of why I moved to Snowdin.”
Sans picked up the distracting glass and threw it over his shoulder. “Well then tell me why else you moved to Snowdin. Lava to snow seems like a pretty big shift just to get away from the noise.”
Grillby was caught a little bit off-guard, glancing over Sans’s shoulder before meeting his eyes again. “W-well, I’m an adult. It’s natural that I would leave home at some point, haha…”
“Yeah, but don’t fire monster families usually stick close together?” Sans asked.
“That’s correct.” Grillby adjusted his glasses, gaze falling to the table. “But I chose to open a business in Snowdin.”
Well, now they were just going around in circles. It seemed no matter what Sans asked or what buttons he pushed, Grillby was going to give him short, distant answers. The skeleton was beyond frustrated. Was it so much for him to ask to hear his boyfriend talk for more than a few seconds at a time?! He sighed inwardly as an oblivious waiter came by with their food, setting it on the table and cheerily asking if they needed anything else before walking off. The food looked nice, but the conversation tonight was… well, kind of nonexistent.
An awkward silence settled over the table as the two monsters looked at their plates. Unsurprisingly, Sans ended up being the one who had to break the silence. “So… Looks good. Why don’t you eat some and tell me what you think?”
Grillby wordlessly picked up his fork, taking a bite of the steak he’d opted for. He noticed he was still being watched and shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “I-it’s good,” he mumbled. Did Sans realize his eyes had darkened? Was everything okay? The fire monster was starting to feel like he was being interrogated.
“Yeah? Care to elaborate on that?” Sans knew he was being pushy, but he didn’t know what else to do. He wanted to hear Grillby talk. He wanted to see him let down his guard and ramble for once. Just once, he wanted to be the one listening instead of the one doing all the talking. Was that too much to ask?
Yes. Yes, it was.
Grillby suddenly stood up, keeping his gaze on the wall, the floor, anywhere but Sans. “Excuse me,” he mumbled, “I need to step outside for a moment.”
Sans sat up straight, finally snapping out of his thoughts long enough to pay attention to his boyfriend’s body language. Grillby was on the defensive, tension evident in each flame of his body. Before Sans could say anything to stop him, the fire monster had rushed off, walking past him and exiting the building. Well, shit.
“What the hell just happened?” Sans mumbled to himself, going over the events of the evening in his head. Yeah, maybe he’d been a bit pushy with Grillby, but it wasn’t worth getting that upset over, right?
“What was it like?”
“Noisy.”
“Don’t fire monster families usually stick close together?”
“That’s correct.”
“Ah, well, I’ve been talking long enough. Forgive my rambling.”
“Forgive me for rambling.”
...Grillby’s been talking plenty, Sans realized, eye sockets widening. He’s been telling me he’s uncomfortable all evening. I just wasn’t listening.
Grillby sat against the wall outside of MTT Resort, sighing as he took off his glasses and hung his head. He felt so embarrassed. He just couldn’t figure out what he had been doing wrong, and if Sans had kept questioning him he was sure he was going to cry or yell or- or something unpleasant. It had been weird when Sans started asking about the menu as if he couldn’t read, but Sans was weird like that sometimes. It went from weird to uncomfortable when the skeleton started asking personal questions, practically demanding answers. The bartender wanted to answer them. It wasn’t fair that Grillby knew so much about Sans’s personal life and Sans knew so little of Grillby’s, but…
...well. The fire monster had his reasons for not talking about it on what was supposed to be a romantic date.
People talked to people. Grillby knew this. His patrons at the bar were always making small talk and rambling and telling their stories, and that was a good thing. That was how people got to know others and become friends. On more than one occasion, he’d find himself listening to a conversation and thinking of just the story to tell or just the comment to add.
On more than one occasion, he felt a hand on the back of his neck, shoving him down and reminding him that children were seen and not heard. Even as an adult, that inclination to only say what needed to be said and to say it as concisely as possible stayed stubbornly in the back of his throat, choking any stray chatter that might make trouble for him.
People talked to people. Grillby knew this.
It was just… hard, sometimes.
“Takeout for Gr- Grail-bee? Is there a Grail-bee here?”
Grillby put his glasses back on, looking up. Sans stood over him with a plastic takeout bag, the skeleton looking sheepish as he offered a smile. “Hey there, firefly. You okay?”
“I’m alright,” Grillby mumbled, moving to get up. Sans stopped him with a hand on his shoulder, sitting next to the fire monster instead. Grillby relaxed back against the wall, looking at the bag and immediately feeling guilty. “I’m sorry. I-” Grillby’s voice cracked and he took a deep breath, choking back the tears he’d been trying to avoid in the restaurant. “I ruined dinner, didn’t I?”
“No, no, Grillbz,” Sans quickly reassured, turning towards Grillby and putting a hand on his shoulder. “You didn’t ruin anything. C’mon, don’t cry- come here, it’s okay, I’m sorry.” He pulled Grillby into a hug, rubbing his back. “Shh, I’m sorry. I made you real uncomfy back there, and that’s on me. I should’ve been paying more attention.”
Grillby wrapped his arms around Sans, taking deep breaths. “Sans,” he finally mumbled, “I understand that you are curious about me and my background, but why were you so… insistent, tonight?”
“Weeellll…” Sans rubbed the back of his neck. “I honestly didn’t care about the question itself so much as I… wanted to get you to… ramble? You know, it sounds really dumb out loud, heheh…”
Grillby took a moment to process that, pulling away after a moment. “You wanted me to ramble?”
Sans chuckled nervously. “Yeah, I mean, I… I-i like the sound of your voice? It’s, um, calming.”
“It’s calming,” Grillby echoed, dumbfounded. All of that stress, just so Sans could listen to him talk for a few minutes.
Sans braced himself for the worst as Grillby lapsed into silence once again. He was going to be pissed, wasn’t he? “Look, I really am sorry, Grillbz. I don’t know what I was thinking, I just-”
Sans was cut off by a quiet snort of laughter. Grillby was… chuckling? Not just chuckling, he was laughing. He started to laugh and then couldn’t stop, resting his head on Sans’s shoulder as the fire of his hair danced with mirth. Needless to say, the skeleton was very confused. “So… Am I missing the punchline here or something?”
Grillby sat up, smiling at Sans with that fond, exasperated look again. “Sans, you numbskull… Why didn’t you just ask me to read you a book?”
Oh. Oh yeah. That probably would’ve been the easiest way to do it.
Sans groaned and put a hand to his skull, sending Grillby into another fit of laughter at the skeleton’s expense. Sans figured he deserved it, after all the pressure he’d put on Grillby that evening. “Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. I’m guessing this means you forgive me?”
Grillby calmed down, smiling at Sans before planting a kiss on the top of his skull. “Yes,” he said softly, “I forgive you, bonehead.”
“Cool,” Sans chuckled. “Sooooo… If I were to ask you to take me home with you and read to me…”
“The answer would be yes,” Grillby said with a small smile, standing up and offering Sans a hand. “I’ll even let you pick the book. But first, you have to go for a walk with me. We can take a shortcut once we reach Waterfall, not a moment sooner.”
Sans took Grillby’s hand and stood, opting to hold his hand as they walked instead of letting go. “Wow, that’s sweet, Grillbz. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you have a crush on me.”
Grillby rolled his eyes fondly. “Good thing we both know better.”
The two fell into a comfortable silence, walking side-by-side through Hotland. Grillby looked around himself as they did, smiling softly. Usually, Sans would be the one to break the silence, if it needed to be broken. Well, it had already been a fairly unusual evening, hadn’t it?
“I used to walk to school down this road,” Grillby suddenly commented, smiling fondly at the memory. “My brother Cole always walked with me, just in case something happened. Of course, the only time something did happen, he was at home sick and I was walking to school alone.”
“Oh?” Sans looked up at him, smiling brightly. Was he dreaming? Or was this really happening? “What happened?”
“Well,” Grillby began, “They had just started construction on a new steam puzzle nearby…”
Another day, Sans would sit down with Grillby and ask him why he moved to Snowdin. Another day, Grillby would be ready to tell him everything. For that evening, though, it didn’t matter. All that mattered was which book Sans would choose and how many pages Grillby could get through before they fell asleep in each other’s arms.

“See that tree on the hill?”
Virgil quirks an eyebrow at the boy beside him, taking in his bright orange t-shirt and the three beads on his leather necklace. He has what Virgil would swear was snake scales across the left side of his face. Janus, he had said his name was. (Like the god? Virgil had asked. No relation. Not unless Athena has some explaining to do, the boy had told him with a wry smile as if that was somehow supposed to make sense.)
He’d met Janus four hours ago in New York in Central Park after a very weird encounter with a cyclops. Though if he’s being honest, the cyclops had only been the most recent run-in with vicious creatures out of his mother’s old Greek myth anthology. He’d been ducking and dodging and outrunning them for nearly a year at this point. Janus had appeared seemingly out of nowhere, sliced the cyclops with a dagger and it vanished in a puff of gold dust.
Then Janus told him he knew a safe place to go. Perhaps he was an idiot, but Virgil had followed without much objection. The idea of a place that was safe was nearly too good to be true, but Janus had just dusted a cyclops. And Virgil figured there was at least some power in numbers, if nothing else.
Virgil follows where the other boy is pointing and sees a tall pine tree at the top of the steep hill. He nods.
“Go there. You’ll see a camp in the valley. Chiron will explain.”
“Chiron?”
“Yes. Activities director. You can trust him.”
“You’re not coming too?” Virgil looks at the boy beside him again. Janus is looking in the opposite direction of the tree back the way they’d come and he yanks the dagger out of his belt.
Janus’s mouth twitches. “We’ve got company. I will hold them off. The border is protected. You’ll be safe once you cross the tree line.”
Alarmed, Virgil looks over his shoulder and sees a winged creature in the distance. It looks almost a like a bat, if a bat could be the size of a human person. “What is that?!”
Janus gives a slight shove to Virgil’s shoulder. “Run, Virgil!”
“I can’t leave you behind—”
Janus mutters something that sounds foreign, and yet Virgil understands it. A curse word in… was that ancient Greek? Virgil isn’t given time to process it before Janus grabs Virgil’s arm and takes off at a sprint up the hill. Virgil stumbles but he manages to keep his feet under him as he takes off at a run for the looming pine. As they get closer, Virgil chances a glance over his shoulder. The winged creature is maybe twenty yards away. It’ll be on them any second.
Janus whistles sharply. “Hey! We got incoming!”
Seemingly out of nowhere, three other kids appear from near the tree. One of them notches an arrow in an honest-to-gods bow. He aims, then releases. Virgil watches, stunned, as the blow strikes true and the winged creature vanishes in a puff of gold dust that gets caught in the breeze.
Virgil rests his hands on his knees as he catches his breath. Janus, beside him, is breathing hard as well but he nods to the kid with the bow and arrow.
“Nice shot,” Virgil tells him.
The kid looks to be maybe a year older than Virgil, and is wearing a t-shirt that matches Janus’s. He’s also got a necklace of beads, though his has five of them. Virgil realizes that some of them match Janus’s, plus a few more. He slings the bow across his back and flashes Virgil a bright grin.
“Thanks! I’m Sloane.” He extends his hand.
“Virgil.” He shakes the kid’s hand.
Sloane nods to the other two kids that had materializes near him. One of them is a girl that looks a little younger than Virgil, maybe 14, with dark hair pulled back into a ponytail. The other is a guy in a backwards baseball cap and a plaid shirt over the orange tee that looks about Sloane’s age. His necklace only has one bead on it.
“This is Valerie,” Sloane introduces. “She’s from Cabin 10. And this is Kai. He’s from Cabin 9.”
“Sloane,” Janus interrupts. “Where’s Chiron?”
Sloane jerks his head down the hill. “In the Big House with the lead counselors.”
Virgil watches Janus’s brow furrow. “Seems unusual. Did something happen?”
Valerie sighs. “Kind of. Dionysus gave one of his kids a quest. Counselors are meeting about the prophecy to see who is going.”
Janus’s eyebrows shoot up in surprise. “Which one?”
“Jack. The prophecy mentions a death. That never bodes well, and kids aren’t exactly lining up to work for Mr. D.”
Janus hums thoughtfully, his eyes trailing over the crest of the hill. Virgil watches as he shoves the knife into his belt. Kai cocks his head slightly, studying Virgil closely. Then, he looks at Janus. “Has he been claimed?”
Virgil frowns. “Claimed?”
“No,” Janus tells Kai, then looks to Virgil. “Follow me. I’ll explain as we walk.”
Janus nods to the other three and Virgil follows him down to the valley below. From this vantage point, Virgil sees the cabins Janus has been talking about, forming something like a horseshoe shape. In front of it is a large building that Virgil assumes is the ‘Big House’ that Sloane had mentioned. He sees other buildings and structures, but decides to wait to ask about them.
People mill around, most of them wearing the orange t-shirt that has a winged horse and the words Camp Half-Blood printed on them. When they notice Virgil, most of them throw a curious glance to Janus. Janus doesn’t even seem to notice.
“Welcome to Camp Half-Blood,” Janus says as they walk. “It’s one of the few safe spaces left for demigods like us.”
“Wait,” Virgil says, certain that he heard Janus incorrectly. “Demigod?”
Janus glances at him. “Hm. I gather you really don’t know very much. Yes, demigod. Half-god, half-mortal.”
“And you think I’m one of these, uh, half-bloods?” Virgil shakes his head. “Listen, I think you’ve got the wrong guy.”
Janus looks almost amused now, an eyebrow arching almost like a challenge. “You couldn’t have gotten across the border into camp if you weren’t. Let me guess… you have ADHD and dyslexia.”
“Wh—I mean, yes, but—”
“You were raised by either a single parent or no parent at all,” Janus continues.
“My mom, until—”
“You see things others either don’t see or don’t remember.”
“I—”
“Please. Do stop me if I’m wrong.”
Virgil falls silent, his chest a bit tight. He crosses his arms over his chest as they walk.
Janus waits for a beat before he elaborates, sounding like it’s a spiel he’s given a dozen times already. “The ADHD is the battle reflexes. Dyslexia is because your brain is wired for ancient Greek, not modern English.”
Virgil’s mind is reeling. “But—”
“The things you see are because you’re a demigod. You are able to see things as they are.  Mortals—most mortals—get deceived by this thing called the Mist. Someday, with training, you’ll be able to manipulate it as well. It’s a useful skill.”
Virgil feels suddenly way too hot, and yet still has the sudden desire to pull the hood of his hoodie up over his hair. “Demigod,” he repeats, though saying it aloud doesn’t help it make sense. “Are… Are you telling me that my dad is a god? Like a Greek god? Zeus? Apollo? Those guys?”
Janus glances at him and looks, for a split second, almost apologetic. “I understand that it’s a lot to take in at once. This is why Chiron usually takes the initiation. He usually has a more, ah, sensitive means of broaching the subject. But since he’s meeting with the lead counselors, I’m afraid the responsibility falls to me.”
Virgil blinks. He can feel the pressure in his chest building and he forces himself to take a breath. It doesn’t help as much as he’d been hoping it would. “Which one?”
“Hm?”
“Which god is my dad?”
They’re passing in front of the Big House now. There’s two people standing on the front porch—a blonde girl holding a Yankees cap and a boy with a goatee leaning against the railing—seeming deep in conversation. The blonde girl offers Janus a small wave. Janus nods back.
“To your question, the answer is that we don’t know,” he says. “Since you haven’t been claimed yet, your guess is as good as ours. But you might be claimed any minute now, or never claimed at all. I was claimed three days after arriving at camp by Athena. But we have several campers who haven’t been claimed at all. Remy Short is one such example.”
“Athena. Goddess of wisdom and strategy,” Virgil remembers. He’d read that name in his mother’s library when he was younger. And he has a vague memory from sixth grade social studies.
“Indeed,” Janus replies. They circle around the house and Virgil realizes that Janus is leading him towards the semi-circle of cabins. “Since you haven’t been claimed yet, you’re designated to Cabin 11. Hermes’ cabin.”
“Janus!” A bright, cheerful voice calls from behind them. Janus stops and turns, and Virgil follows his gaze. A boy that looks about Virgil’s age, maybe a year older, is running towards them from the Big House. He’s got a flop of curly hair and big round glasses.
“Patton,” Janus greets as the boy slows to a stop near them. “Virgil, this is Patton. He’s the head of the Hermes cabin.”
Patton grins and holds out his hand. “Hi, Virgil. Welcome to Cabin 11. I’ll talk to Chiron about getting you some supplies—”
“I’ll talk to Chiron,” Janus interrupts as Virgil shakes Patton’s hand. “I need to ask him about some things anyway. Patton, could you—”
“For sure,” Patton agrees readily. “I’ll show Virgil around!”
Janus excuses himself and starts towards the Big House. Virgil rubs the back of his neck and offers Patton an awkward smile.  Now that he’s closer, Virgil realizes that Patton is maybe an inch or so shorter than him. He’s got four beads on his necklace.
“How ya doing?” Patton asks him, startling him out of his thoughts. Virgil meets his eyes. Patton’s are a warm brown, and his smile is sympathetic. “I remember my first day at camp. It’s always overwhelming.”
Virgil huffs. “Yeah, you could say that.”
“You’ll love it here,” Patton says with a surprising amount of confidence.
Virgil arcs a skeptical eyebrow. “I’ve heard that before. I don’t seem to, ah, stay in one place very long.”
“Kicked out of school?” Patton guesses. He starts walking around the cabins and Virgil follows, slipping his hands into the pocket of his hoodie.
“Yeah. Several times.”
“We all have,” Patton says, not unkindly. “That’s the best thing about camp. In the mortal world, we’re all labeled as weird or outcasts. But at camp? We’ve all been through it. Oh! This is Cabin 10. Aphrodite’s cabin.”
Patton walks Virgil around the semi-circle, explaining each cabin’s assigned deity. He adds that Cabins 1 through 3 are empty, though apparently there was a girl that used to be in Cabin 1—Zeus’s cabin—who joined the Hunters of Artemis and left camp. Cabin 2 was Hera’s, and since she didn’t have children, the cabin was mostly honorary. Cabin 3 usually had a kid in it, but he apparently was on some kind of recon mission and wouldn’t return for another day or two. Cabin 8—Aretmis’s cabin—is also, usually, empty except when the Hunters visit.
“Since you don’t know who your dad is, you get to bunk with us at the Hermes Cabin,” Patton explains. “We take all unclaimed kids, since Hermes is the god of travelers.”
“I thought he was the god of thieves,” Virgil says before he can think about it.
Patton smiles sheepishly. “Yeah, that too. If you’ve got anything important, maybe keep it with ya. Just in case. I try to dissuade stealing, but old habits die hard for some of these kiddos.”
Patton leads him around the camp, pointing out the strawberry fields, the armory, and the forge that mostly gets used by the Hephaestus kids. A few of them wave at Patton, who eagerly waves back and calls a few of them by name. He shows Virgil the arena, where two kids are sparring. Patton takes a seat and Virgil sits beside him, watching the two boys circle each other.
Both of them are wearing matching orange t-shirts—Patton had told him that he’d be getting one too—and some armor. One of them has dark hair and square glasses. He’s got two knives, one in each hand, and even from a bit of distance Virgil can sees the slight sheen of sweat to his forehead. The other one’s hair is a couple of shades lighter. His sleeves are rolled up and he wields a sword and a shield.
“The one with the glasses is Logan,” Patton explains. “He’s a child of Athena. The other one is Roman. He’s a child of Apollo. I met both of them in Seattle before we made our way to camp together thanks to some help from a satyr.”
“All three of you have been claimed?” Virgil asks, watching as Roman charges at Logan who rolls out of the way and then nimbly jumps back up to his feet. He slashes at Roman’s back but Roman parries the blow with a well-timed flick of the sword.
“Not immediately,” Patton says. “Logan was claimed as soon as we got to camp, but it was a month or so for me. And Roman was nearly a year before Apollo claimed him during a campfire song. It certainly surprised a lot of people.”
“Why?”
“His brother was claimed by Ares three months before him, so most people thought Roman was Ares’ kid too.”
Virgil glances at Patton. “Roman has a brother?”
Patton’s mouth presses into a thin line for a moment, and Virgil gets the sense that it’s a touchy subject. “Yeah. Remus. It’s unusual for two kids of the same family to both be demigods, and the fact that their father are two different gods led to some… tension. Roman and Remus don’t exactly get along.”
Virgil nods his understanding and turns his attention back to the sparring pair. Roman blocks a quick slash from Logan with his shield and swipes at him with the sword, but Logan parries the blow with the other knife in his hands. Then in a series of quick movements—Virgil isn’t sure how it happens, exactly—Roman is flat on his back and Logan is on his chest with the knife to his throat.
Roman says something that Virgil can’t make out, and Logan says something in kind before he climbs off Roman and helps him up. Roman flashes a grin and shoves Logan’s shoulder before he glances past his sparring match and sees Patton and Virgil sitting on one of the benches.
Roman waves. “Heya, Padre!”
Logan glances over his shoulder and quirks an eyebrow at Virgil but stores his daggers as Roman jogs over. Patton stands and Virgil follows him down to meet Roman halfway.
“Hey, Roman,” Patton replies. “I didn’t know you started using a sword!”
Roman grabs a towel off a nearby bench and mops the sweat off his forehead. “It’s new. I’m still trying to get used to it. I think the balance is off.”
“The balance is fine,” Logan quips, stepping up beside him. “You just need more practice.”
Roman rolls his eyes but doesn’t argue. “Either way, Specs. I’ll take archery any day over waving a sharp stick around.”
“You are definitely a son of Apollo,” Logan rejoins back without malice. “And it would be unwise to only be versed in ranged attack.”
“And you are definitely a son of Athena.”
“Correct.”
Virgil snorts, and then a part of him regrets it as Roman and Logan both look over at him. Virgil flushes slightly, uncomfortable with the sudden attention, but Patton seems to only perk up more.
“Oh! Sorry, this is Virgil. He’s a new camper. Janus ran into him on his way back and brought him along.”
“Which cabin?” Logan asks.
Virgil shrugs. “For now, Cabin 11, I guess.”
“Unclaimed, then.” Virgil listens for the judgement in Logan’s voice, but he doesn’t hear it. It sounds more like a flat statement of fact, as if reporting the weather. Logan nods once. “Very well.”
“I was just showing him around,” Patton supplies. “You guys wanna join?”
Logan starts shrugging out of the armor he’s wearing. “Regrettably, I said that I would assist Harley with some blueprints when I had finished sparring with Roman.”
Roman slides the sword into the scabbard at his side. “And I’m overdue for a Pegasus lesson. I can’t miss it again. The last thing I need is Mr. D giving me another earful.” Roman gives a quick two-finger salute and rushes out of the arena.
Virgil blinks at Patton. “Pegasus?”
Patton grins brightly. “Come on. I’ll show ya.”
Patton spends the rest of the afternoon showing Virgil around the camp. They go to the stables (where Roman offers to take Virgil for a ride but Virgil immediately declines because he’s never been a fan of flying). They swing by the beach on their way to the climbing wall. Virgil watches, amazed, as two kids climb with impressive speed and narrowly avoid the magma that starts to pour down it.
One of the kids has a Morningstar gripped between his teeth, a green bandana around his upper bicep and a matching one around his head. He’s fast, scaling the wall with a well-practiced ease. Virgil hears him laugh delightedly when his hand slips and he almost gets burned by the lava. It’s somehow both impressive and disconcerting.
“That would be Remus.”
“That’s Remus?” Virgil repeats, though when he looks a bit closer he sees the similarity in hair color and skin complexion. “I guess I see the resemblance.”
“Don’t tell Roman that,” Patton says lightly. “C’mon.”
They pass the amphitheater where, apparently, there would be a bonfire tonight. Patton shows him the volleyball court where four kids are playing one another. They wave at Patton as they pass.
“You seem popular,” Virgil supplies. He’s lost track of how many kids have waved at them as they walk around.
Patton lifts a shoulder modestly. “I dunno. Since Hermes is the catch-all cabin, a lot of camp knows me since they come to our cabin if they haven’t been claimed yet. Sometimes we get kids that get claimed right away, or kids that already have been claimed, but otherwise? I get to be their lead counselor for at least a little bit.”
“Sounds like a lot of responsibility.”
“I kind of like it,” Patton admits with a smile. “It’s like I’m everyone’s honorary camp dad.”
The conversation cuts out as dinner is called and they head to the mess hall. Patton explains the offering to the gods prior to the meal, and Virgil scrapes part of his plate into the fire. He doesn’t know what to ask for.
It’d be nice to have a family again, dad, he thinks, unsure of who he should even direct the comment to. Patton waves him over, offering a seat beside him.
Virgil chances a glance around the mess hall as they eat. The Hermes table is certainly the most crowded, though Virgil can’t say he finds that surprising. Athena’s table has several kids reading while eating. Two kids at the Ares table are in the middle of an arm-wrestling competition. One kid at the Hephaestus table is pouring over a blueprint, and Virgil wonders if that was the Harley kid that Logan had mentioned.
Towards the end of the meal, a few kids at the Apollo table starts singing “Bohemian Rhapsody” and it’s not long before most of their table is doing the entire song with harmony. Someone from the Demeter table tells them to ‘save it for the campfire’, but it does nothing to deter the Apollo kids. Virgil catches Roman laughing as he sings, one of his sibling’s arms slung around his shoulders.
Virgil glances over and sees Logan at the Athena table sitting next to Janus, watching the chaos unfold and the faintest quirk of his lips betray his amusement.
Virgil feels some of the tension in his chest relax just a little.
The bonfire starts around dusk. Virgil is making his way to the amphitheater from dropping supplies off at the cabin when Roman comes up from behind him and loops his arm through Virgil’s, chattering excitedly about how much he loved this part of camp. Virgil sees an ukulele case slung around his shoulder.
Logan appears a second later on the other side of Virgil, commenting dryly that the Apollo kids had done their vocal warm-ups during the dinner. This only served to lead Roman to do actual vocal warm-ups—trills and scales, specifically—as they walked. Patton and Janus were already sitting down, three rows back. Patton waves when he sees them file in. Remus is sitting beside Janus, seemingly trying to goad him into some kind of competition that he was having no interest in. The firelight glints of Janus’s scales.
“Hey,” Virgil says to Roman and Logan. “Can… I ask what happened to Janus?” He immediately regrets the question, cursing his lack of a filter, but neither of the other boys seem perturbed by the question.
“A curse from Aphrodite,” Logan answers. “Janus had gone on a quest for our mother, and it led to some… unsavory tension between himself and Aphrodite. From what he’s told me, he accused Ares of being a snake in the grass while in the presence of Aphrodite, and… well. The love goddess didn’t take kindly to that. But it’s purely cosmetic.”
Virgil arcs an eyebrow. “Remus seems chill with him.”
“I’m not sure that Remus is aware of the accusation Janus leveled at his father,” Logan muses. “And Janus is not one to hold the children accountable for the actions of their godly parent.”
“It doesn’t benefit him,” Roman adds in, using his free hand for air quotes. “Or something like that. Janus is all about himself and how he can improve his own standing.”
“Sounds like someone else I know,” Logan quips dryly.
Roman scoffs, but when Virgil looks at him, there’s a teasing glint to his eyes. “Well, I wasn’t going to say it, but you guys are half-brothers for a reason.”
Logan looks at Roman over the top of his glasses, but Roman just shoots him a cheeky smile as they approach the other three. Virgil slides into the seat beside Patton, followed by Logan and then Roman. There’s a few kids—Virgil isn’t sure what cabin they’re from—trying to lead a call-and-response chant as campers file in. Down the row, Remus enthusiastically calls out the responses at the top of his lungs.
“Roman!” A new voice calls out from the end of their row. A tall guy, a couple of years older than them, is holding a ukulele and jerking his head down towards the bonfire. “You ready to help me kick this thing off?”
Roman grins and jumps up. “Would be an honor, Thomas.” He rushes off and he and Thomas start playing a song together with practiced ease. He and the other Apollo kids start singing, and before long the vast majority of campers are joining in. A few of them, including Patton, sway a little. Virgil doesn’t sing, but he listens and tries to remember the words.
The sky grows dark. The Apollo kids eventually cede the floor to some Ares kids who start up another chant. More songs are sung, some snacks get passed around, and Virgil is starting to think that maybe, with time, he could get used to this.
“Oh! I almost forgot!” Patton says beside him, as the next song starts. He drops something into Virgil’s lap. “I got this for ya.”
Virgil looks down. It’s two camp t-shirts. The black winged horse and the Camp Half-Blood print stares up at him. He looks over at Patton.
Patton just smiles. “Claimed or not, you’re one of us. We claim you.”
Virgil feels like maybe that’s good enough for him.

summary: Catalina starts college in a small town all the way across the country. She doesn’t know anyone and isn’t exactly looking for friends. She just wants to focus on dance. But when she meets fellow dance major, Jimin, and adventurous, fellow freshman, Jungkook, Catalina ends up discovering a whole new side to the small college town; one that is dangerous but oh so enticing…
(smut is alluded to in this chapter, so I apologize to any family members who may be reading this👀)
              Once everyone had arrived at the mansion, Taehyung called them all into the dining room, where he had laid out a beautiful Christmas feast. There was a beef roast on one end and a ham on the other end. Between the two were potatoes, greens, fresh bread, fruit garnishes and jams, and an assortment of other sides.
              “Tae tae! You really outdid yourself today!” Hoseok exclaimed as he pulled a chair out for his mother. His mother was in her seventies, a tiny and soft-spoken woman. Hoseok’s sister sat beside their mother. Catalina was only briefly introduced to them, only to learn their names and thank his mother for the necklace, so she made sure to sit across from them. Jungkook took the seat beside her.
              “I want to ask them if they know anything about Hobi’s past,” Catalina whispered to him. He nodded.
              “That’s a good idea,” said Jungkook. “He’s always been a bit suspicious to me. I mean, we’re surrounded by these ancient vampires who had no problems telling us about all the people they’ve killed in the past, but I’m honestly most worried about him. If Yoongi could tell his story, why can’t Hoseok?”
              “Exactly,” said Catalina. “That’s what I was thinking.”
              Once everyone was settled at the table and most of the dishes had made the rounds, Catalina looked over at Hoseok’s sister, whose name was Jiwoo, she remembered.
             “So, I heard Hoseok’s been telling you two about us,” said Catalina. “I hope all good things.”
              “Of course, all good things!” Jiwoo laughed. “He’s been gushing about his new friends non-stop. Every time he visits, he tells us about some new adventure. He said you and Jimin are really good dancers.”
              “We’re really good at ballet,” said Catalina. “But Hoseok tried to teach us his style and we kind of sucked.”
              “I’m sure he didn’t fare any better in ballet,” Jiwoo said.
              “Not really,” Catalina said with a wide smile. Then she leaned in and lowered her voice. “So, I’m curious. How much has Hoseok told you about how he was turned?”
              Jiwoo pressed her lips into a thin line, then said, “Honestly, not much. I know the entire experience took a huge toll on him and he had to drop out of college because of it. We’ve asked him about it many times, but he never seems to want to talk about. I think it’s painful for him to bring up the memory.”
              “Oh,” Catalina looked over at Hoseok, who was laughing hysterically at a story Jimin was telling. She tried to imagine what he went through that made him so unwilling to share his story.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
After dinner, the party retired to the ballroom, which definitely was a room Catalina didn’t know existed until now. She wondered how big this house actually was. She dreamed of just wandering around and exploring one day. Yoongi was sat at the grand piano at the end of the ballroom and began playing. Catalina knew he didn’t eat at dinner, she wondered if he was just waiting to come in here and play piano.
The ballroom wasn’t huge; it was the perfect size for a party like this. Crystal chandeliers lit the room and the music filled the air. Namjoon, his professor friend, Jiwoo, Jimmy K and Jin sat at the lounge in the corner of the room to chat, Jimin pulled a giggling Taehyung onto the dancefloor to dance, and Hoseok pulled his mother onto the floor to dance.
“May I?”
Catalina turned around. Jungkook was holding out his hand, a smile on his face. Catalina grinned and took his hand. He led her out to the dance floor and took her waist, pulling her closer.
Even after two dates and several weeks of officially dating, Jungkook still managed to make her blush when he held her close like this.
“I love this dress on you,” he said as they swayed to the music.
“Thank you,” said Catalina. “I had some inside information on you when I bought this. I heard you have a thing for red.”
“I do,” he said as he led her into a spin. “Did Jimin tell you?”
Catalina nodded and leaned in close to whisper in his ear.
“Just wait until you see what I’m wearing underneath.”
She heard his breath catch before he pulled her even closer. They glided across the floor, turning and swaying to the beat. When the song ended, Catalina felt a tap on her shoulder.
“Mind if I cut in?” Jimmy K asked Jungkook.
“I did promise to save him a dance,” said Catalina. She knew Jungkook wasn’t the jealous type, so she wasn’t surprised when he laughed and said, “Sure, why not?”
Jungkook left with a smile and a lingering hand on her bare back. Jimmy K swept her into a waltz as the next song began. She watched Jungkook take a seat by Namjoon, eyeing her with a dreamy smile on his face.
“You’ve got that boy completely wrapped around your finger,” said Jimmy K. Catalina giggled.
“I know,” she said. “Well, he’s got me too.”
“I can see that,” said Jimmy K. “I saw the little gift you left on his neck.”
Catalina laughed loudly at that and said, “You know what he said to me? He said, ‘you should get a collar for me next time’.”
Jimmy K raised an eyebrow and said, “Oh, that would make things interesting.”
“Certainly,” said Catalina. “I have my work cut out for me.”
“You can handle it,” said Jimmy K. “You’re a very capable woman.”
“Jimmy K, if you keep flirting with me all the time, you’re going to turn Jungkook into a jealous mess,” said Catalina. Jimmy K chuckled.
“I can’t help it,” he said. “I just have a flirty personality I guess. But I will stop if it makes you uncomfortable.”
“I just find it flattering,” said Catalina. “You’d have to ask Jungkook about it.”
“I saw you interrogating Hoseok’s sister at dinner,” he said, changing the subject abruptly. “I’m assuming you were trying to get some information on that suspicious bugger.”
“Yeah, ‘trying’ being the key word there,” Catalina said with a sigh. Jimmy K lifted his arm to spin her, then led her into a gliding sidestep and turn. “She barely knew more than we do. The most useful thing she told me was that the experience was supposedly very difficult for him and its painful for him to talk about.”
“Well, he could have just said that,” said Jimmy K. “Here I was thinking he was some kind of spy or he had some kind of murderous backstory.”
“Yeah, same here,” said Catalina. “It still doesn’t answer any questions, but at least it takes a little bit of suspicion off of him.”
“Well, if he ever goes off the rails and takes a nasty turn on you all, just give me a call,” said Jimmy K.
“What, are you some kind of vampire slayer?” asked Catalina, letting him drop her into a dip. “Why do you know so much about vampires and their history and stuff?”
Jimmy K winked and said, “That’s for me to know, darling, and you to find out.”
Catalina smirked and rolled her eyes.
“Ah, the mysterious, ruggedly handsome Jimmy K,” Catalina said, pretending to swoon.
“That’s right,” Jimmy K said with a smirk.
As the song ended, Catalina and Jimmy K parted ways. Catalina joined Jungkook at the lounge, sitting on the armrest of his chair. She draped her arm over his shoulder and gazed down at him. He was listening to Namjoon and Dr. Carlisle talk, but looked up at Catalina when she sat.
“What are you guys talking about?” she asked. Jungkook just smiled up at her and shrugged.
“I don’t really know,” he said. “Something scientific. How was your dance?”
“Heh, let me tell you, Jimmy K is a very mysterious individual,” she said, then leaned down to whisper in his ear. “I’ll tell you what he said later.”
“Please Yoongi-hyung! Do it for me!” Taehyung’s voice caught their attention across the ballroom. He was sitting on the piano bench beside Yoongi, begging him with big eyes and interlocked fingers. Yoongi seemed to let out a deep sigh, as his shoulders continued to sink for several seconds. That seemed to satisfy Taehyung, whose face lit up. He leapt from the bench and went to the wall where he adjusted the lighting to be a bit dimmer. Jimin watched all of this from the center of the dance floor as everyone else cleared away, retreating to the lounge.
Catalina’s eyebrows rose as Taehyung laid across the top of the grand piano. Yoongi began playing and Catalina recognized the tune immediately. To her surprise, Taehyung’s singing voice somehow fit the song beautifully, serenading an overly dramatic version of “A Thousand Miles”. Jimin doubled over laughing as Taehyung serenaded him, sliding off the piano and miming holding a microphone as he approached. Taehyung grabbed Jimin’s hands and led him into a dance as best he could with Jimin laughing so hard, face beet red. Taehyung’s smooth voice led the dramatic, slightly silly performance through the rest of the song. Once it ended, everyone stood up and applauded, Taehyung taking his bows. Jimin stood beside him, covering his face and still giggling.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dr. Carlisle left, along with Jin, Jimmy K, and Hoseok’s sister and mother. Catalina didn’t let them leave without trying to return the necklace, but she told her to hold onto it until next time. After thanking her profusely and watching them all out the door, the group went to one of the bigger lounges. Taehyung served coffee and tea and Hoseok and Namjoon brought in gifts – two thick envelopes decorated with bows.
“You guys didn’t have to get anything!” Jimin exclaimed.
“It’s nothing big,” said Namjoon. “Just tokens really. We haven’t had many friends outside of this house in a long time.”
“But we don’t have anything for you guys,” said Jungkook.
“You guys are broke college students!” Hoseok said. “Save your money!”
They laughed and finally let Namjoon hand a big envelope to Catalina.
“This is kind of from all of us,” he said. “It’s for you and Jungkook.”
Catalina opened the envelope and pulled out several things. A packet of paper depicted pictures of a beautiful forest in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, with waterfalls and trails. It advertised a beautiful cabin, rustic and modern. After reading the front page, she realized what it was.
“Reservations?” she said. “What is this?”
“Look what else is in there,” said Namjoon.
There were two other slips of paper behind the packet. Round trip plane tickets. To Detroit, Michigan. For the week of Christmas. Catalina’s jaw dropped. Jungkook took the packet from her and flipped through it with wide eyes.
“Namjoon, this is too much,” Catalina said.
“Well, it’s from all of us,” said Hoseok. “But it was mostly his idea.”
“The reservation is for the week after Christmas,” said Jungkook.
“So you can spend the first week with your mom,” said Namjoon.
“Oooh! That’s why you asked me if I was spending the holiday with my family,” Jungkook exclaimed.
“You’re not?” Catalina asked. Jungkook shook his head.
“I mean, my brother is coming home and we’re having dinner with my parents a few days before Christmas,” he said. “Which you’re invited to, if you want. I know we’ve only been dating for a short time but…”
“I’d love to go,” she said. “We’ve known each other for a while now and I’ve only seen your parents in passing. I haven’t even met your brother at all.”
“And then it looks like the day after our dinner, we would leave for this,” said Jungkook.
“Namjoon, all of you, thank you so much,” said Catalina. “This is so generous.”
“Yeah, this is really awesome,” said Jungkook. “Thank you.”
“It’s really no problem,” said Namjoon.
Taehyung then handed the other envelope to Jimin and said, “Open mine next, Jiminie.”
Jimin opened the envelope and gasped.
“It’s not until summer, and I understand if you don’t want to, because I know you’re wary around us, as you should be, but I’ve always wanted to try camping and I hear it’s really pretty there…”
“Taehyungie,” Jimin interrupted. His eyes were glittering with tears. “I would love to go with you. This looks beautiful.”
“Really?” Taehyung said. “You’re not afraid to travel with me?”
Jimin shook his head and stood up to hug Taehyung tight. “My lovely Taehyungie. I could never be afraid of you.”
When they broke apart, both of them wiping their eyes, Jimin sat back down and said, “Can’t say the same for the rest of you. Jungkook, Cat, I’m talking about you too.”
Everyone laughed and Jimin said, “Haha, yeah laugh it up. You guys are insane. Sneaking into a vampire den without telling anyone. The fact that you made it out alive is an honest to God miracle.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After cleaning up the party, Taehyung invited the three humans to stay the night if they wanted to, since it was already past midnight. Catalina and Jungkook explored a bit before choosing a guest room on the third floor, far away from everyone else. When Jimin asked them where their room was, Jungkook threw him an exaggerated wink and nothing else. Jimin had almost fallen over laughing.
Their room was big and dark. Thick blackout curtains covered the huge window against the right wall. The four-poster bed looked antique, with twisting posts and sheer curtains around it. The thick carpet was a relief under Catalina’s feet once she took off her heels.
“What did you and Jimmy K talk about?” Jungkook asked as he toed off his own shoes.
“Oh right. He asked about my conversation with Jiwoo,” said Catalina. “I told him what she said, and then Jimmy K insinuated that he may be some kind of vampire slayer.”
Jungkook’s eyebrows shot up. “Are you serious?”
“Yeah, he said something like, ‘If Hoseok ever hurts anyone, just give me a call’,” said Catalina.
“That’s so mysterious,” said Jungkook. “He knew about Alexandria the Annihilator too, which means he’s more familiar with vampire history than any of us.”
“Exactly,” said Catalina.
“Hm… well, we don’t have to talk about Jimmy K anymore,” Jungkook said, sidling closer to Catalina. “Thinking about what you’re wearing under this has been keeping me distracted all night.”
~ ~ ~ ~
The next morning, Catalina woke up before him. She went to the big window and opened the curtains, letting the sunlight stream into the room. The golden rays fell across the bed, bathing Jungkook in the morning light. Catalina admired her work from where she was standing; hickeys decorated his neck, chest, and thighs, and lipstick still stained his skin. His hair was tousled and his face was peaceful. Gorgeous. He was absolutely beautiful. Catalina couldn’t believe how lucky she was.
He said he loves me, Catalina thought with a dopey smile on her face, recalling the way he mumbled it into her skin last night, half asleep. I love this boy. So much.
A is for Arrival...?
Summary: Remus and Janus are shopping ready for the new arrival for their family.
Note: The start of an AU and series because I’m just a sucker for any type of familiar sides. Romantic Demus and Royality.
Next Part: B is for Baby Time
.
“Hey Jay?” Remus suddenly stopped; his eyes enormous.
“Yes, dear?” Janus put on a dramatic Victorian tone, his spine straightening with his hand frozen poised with the packet of washing up sponges.
“Do we need to get birthday stuff?” Janus immediately scrunched his face, “No wait! Listen. You celebrate your kid’s birthday every year so surely you celebrate his first ever one ever. Right?”
Janus stared into the distance as he dropped the sponges on the floor, “Call your brother.”
“No,” Remus whined but still pulled up his phone and promptly shoved it into Janus’ chest, “He’ll only make fun of me if I ask it. If you ask it, then maybe he’ll presume he’s the stupid!”
“Did he celebrate Logan’s first ever ever birthday? What would you even call it? First day of existence?” Janus frowned as he speed dialled the number.
“If he did, he didn’t invite me!” Remus shrugged before picking up the sponges. He immediately crowded into Janus and smooshed himself into his shoulder.
They picked up on the second ring, Patton’s sigh answering. Something that they probably weren’t supposed to hear. “Hello Roman. We just have a quick question,” Janus chirped.
“Hey Janus. It’s Patton by the way. Wow, another question, huh?” Patton, meanwhile, gave Roman a stern look and thrusted the phone at him again. Roman pulled a face as he shrugged and ducked back down behind the sofa. Frowning, he put it on speaker so they could both suffer, “What did you want to ask?”
“Should we celebrate our baby’s first ever day? Like a birthday but for their very very first birthday?”
“What!” Roman shrieked before leaping back on to the sofa; ever so suddenly finding the strength to talk.
“What do you mean ‘what’! God, he’s such a douche,” Remus muttered.
“I’m a douche, oh am I? Why would you celebrate a baby’s first ever day. It’s their first ever day in this world! They get overwhelmed and scared so easily. It’s a big scary world out there and you’re going to shove a party in their face! The baby is barely old enough to move it’s own hands! It’s a baby!” Roman complained while Patton giggled.
“To treat this seriously for a second, when you finally get your baby, the very last thing you want to do is mess around too much. After all this time, all that waiting, you finally get this tiny fragile baby. A tiny itty bitty baby. All you’ll want to do is just sit there and watch them quietly. A party is the last thing you’ll think to do. Heh, me and Roman even forgot to eat that day and only remembered hours later,” Patton spoke softly with his own memories uplifting his annoyance. Roman smiled and knocked their shoulders together.
“...So is it worth buying like finger food in case we forget to eat?” Remus interrupted.
“Uh... yeah? I mean, yeah that would work,” Roman fumbled.
“Okay. Cheers. Bye!” Remus called out while Janus rolled his eyes, “Wow. We really need to get them something for putting up with all this.”
“Well I’m going to keep talking to them, you weirdo.” Janus ran his hand through Remus’ crazed curls but he was quickly shrugged off as Remus went to evaluate which bleach was best for their toilet, “How are you two?”
“Yeah, all’s good here! Just your typical day, what are you doing?” Patton chirped.
“Baby shopping mixed with some normal shopping. Extremely exciting, I’m sure you’re jealous,” Janus felt his voice go soft at just the mere mention of his coming baby.
“Aww! That’s so sweet,” Patton sighed, “I miss that so much about Logie. Baby clothes shopping is the only reason worth becoming a dad.”
“Oh Pat! Such slander, I’m impressed,” Janus laughed.
“Oh hush! Everyone knows that baby clothes are the best cutest things in existence. Aw, are you going to buy Halloween clothes! Me and Roman saw some adorable skeleton onesies today and I came this close to buying it for the baby.”
“Yeah, I think at this point we’ve bought him more Halloween clothes than normal baby stuff. That’s the whole reason we still have to do some shopping. There were these pumpkin shoes and socks. Oh Pat! I swear if I wasn’t so macho and cool, I would’ve cried. Baby shoes are just so tiny!” Remus raised a brow at his squealing voice. But then he also knew exactly what Janus was talking about just from his tone alone. Those shoes were actually pretty cute.
“They are right! Aw, do you know any more about the baby?”
“Well...” Janus drawled while Remus took a breath. They agreed that Janus was going to deal with this breaking news.
“We met up with the mother yesterday.”
“Oh! My! Oh! Oh, Jayjay! That’s amazing! How was she?” Remus quickly snatched the phone and flicked it to speaker. Janus raised a brow at him but he was only met with the most mischievous smirk back. He frowned but turned back to continue talking only now with Patton’s voice squeaking out across the aisle.
“She looked exhausted. I felt so bad for her. Meeting up for a coffee looked like the very last thing she wanted to do,” Remus said.
“Bless her,” Janus sighed, “She was lovely.”
“Aw, that’s good. We never really got to meet our surrogate, how come yours wanted to meet?”
“Well, she apparently had a bit of a health scare. All is good! Everything is all good! But she just wanted to sit down with us and actually go through everything that happened. So we sat and talked about the health of the baby. Again, all is good obviously. But... so... we may or may not have found out our baby’s gender,” Janus winced once the squeal erupted over the phone. Remus cackled at the amount of people who turned to look at them with dirty looks before he turned the speaker off again. Ah, yes wouldn’t be a trip to the shops if Remus couldn’t spread some mild chaos.
“What’s their gender!” Patton screamed before launching up from the sofa. Roman was giggling as Patton jumped up and down and spun him around.
“We’re having a boy!” Janus smiled. He would deny the glow in his chest for this rest of his life but he couldn’t help but grab Remus’ hand. Remus smiled, thankfully, and squeezed his hand with his own lovesick smile. Their baby boy.
“Oh a boy!” Patton squealed high enough for dogs.
“Typical, not one girl in this entire family,” Roman chuckled.
“Oh congrats guys! When’s the due date again?” Patton sighed.
“10th of December. I almost feel bad for the boy. He’s going to have to put up with the whole Christmas birthday combination.”
“I’m still upset that he wasn’t a Halloween baby,” Remus frowned.
They chatted for a few more minutes before Janus finally hung up. They were still holding hands- they would look exactly like a couple from a lovey film if they actually dressed like normal people rather than Disney villains. All they needed to do now grab was some more normal baby outfits. A very simple easy task. Just look at some clothes and chose some cute functional clothes.
But every single time... every single time, they would find the most abnormal baby outfits possible. That and they always spent a good ten solid minutes of staring at the tiny shoes. They looked like build-a-bear shoes. They didn’t even look real.
“I can’t wait until he arrives,” Remus mumbled as he picked up a hideous orange dinosaur patterned jumper set. Janus tried to hide the smile but he quickly placed his head on his shoulder as they stood there.
“Neither can I. He can’t come soon enough. Just like how you can’t put back that gross set soon enough.”
“You don’t like it! I think it’s cute.” Remus tilted his head as if that made it cuter.
“He’s so not going to be an orange baby.”
“You don’t know that! Does he even need a colour?”
“You’ve got green, I like yellow. He also needs a colour. While we can still have control over what he wears at least,” Janus stated like Remus was a toddler trying to argue that the sky was green.
“So we both have our ugly colours. Then he also needs an ugly colour too! Orange is a disgusting colour!” Remus thrusted the jumper in his face.
“Oh totally exactly, dear,” Janus rolled his eyes before he then felt the passion erupt from him, “Okay. Firstly, for your information, yellow is a beautiful colour thank you very much. You’re the one that chose the grossest colour of green to embrace. He can have purple,” Janus winced as he guided Remus’ hand back down to the shelf.
“Purple?”
“Yes. A beautiful colour. Not only does it screw over superfluous ridiculous gender roles, it also is close enough to match our dress senses,” Janus stated with a proud look. Remus opened his mouth but then snapping it shut with a respectful nod. Yep, that sounded like a plan.
They eventually found some normal tiny eeny weeny pair of jeans and they used all of their collective strength to stay clear of all the Halloween clothes and bought some presentable jumpers. Janus was finally starting to get fed up with standing around in a shop before he realised that Remus’ eyes kept flicking to a shelf behind them.
He never made any move to actually go look at whatever it was and he never mentioned it. Janus found every reason to keep looking at the same pairs of stripey socks to give him time but he still said nothing. It was so uncommon that Remus felt shy about suggesting something. What could be the harm? “What you looking at?” Janus asked while exaggeratedly turning around.
“Um... I just noticed...” Remus drawled off. It was just a discount shelf. It was stacked with just random broken items that clearly no one ever take any interest in. Remus shyly sulked up to it and pushed aside the chipped mugs and torn notebooks without any hesitation. He pulled up a baby blanket.
It was the exact same incredibly soft material all baby stuff was made from. The stuff where your hand magnetised to its softness. It was a quilted baby blanket in a pastel lilac. It was cute but it wouldn’t be on a discounted shelf without reason. There was a large smudge of black marker on its corner. But as Remus held it up, Janus laughed. It wasn’t quilted. It was sewn to be a spider web pattern around the blanket. Clearly an old Halloween gimmick.
He turned to ask if Remus was all ready to go then and was immediately punched in the stomach. Remus was all teary eyed and awkwardly looking anywhere but him. His fingers brushed through the blanket over and over again.
“Oh Reem,” Janus cooed and tugged the blanket from his grasp but he didn’t let go.
“I don’t even know why I’m tearing up!” Remus pressed his arms against his face. Janus felt himself tearing up as well. Something about how Remus’ voice would go all wobbly and pitchy when he was on the edge of tears just always got to him, “Just... oh this is so fucking stupid.”
“Well you’ve got us both crying in a shop at 9 in the morning. I’d say it sounds pretty dumb,” Janus smiled.
“Just... he could be our little spider. Just like how I’m your octopus and you’re my snake,” Remus’ voice was practically crumbling away. Janus felt a disgusting childish tear slip down his face.
“Oh Reem.” Janus hugged him, only so he didn’t have to experience the embarrassment of people seeing his husband’s gross taste in blankets of course.
“How much spider stuff have we bought him! Like that would be perfect. And this is purple and spider!” Remus felt a tear escape his control too but he just buried his nose in Janus’ hair.
“Oh you are such a nightmare of a husband. I’m taking you back to the husband shop and refunding you,” Janus groaned, he broke away and snatched the blanket from his grasp and shoved it into their trolley. At least it was cheap. Plus they would probably end up staining it with gross new born baby vomit anyway.
The erroneous impression of a resplendent fractioned Proteus
Future fish AU but slightly altered
Yamazaki Sousuke, Matsuoka Rin, Tatchibana Makoto, Hazuki Nagisa +
SouHaru
SFW
Intro | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2
July had started in a frenzy. The heat was terrible and even though Sousuke's business was slowly picking up, the pace was probably a little more than what he'd like to put up with for the time being.
Sousuke was running a fishing and diving store in the town of Iwatobi. Actually, the only store to be exact.
He was merchandising nets and small parts for fishing boats, paints for the ships and was also giving diving lessons to anyone who wanted to learn or provided sea tours for the few tourists who ended up in these somewhat far shores of japan. Most of those tourists, were actually coming here after listening about the disasters of the previous year and falling in love with the amazing seascape from the pictures that were projected through the news. Their numbers increasing exponentially as of late.
Generally, if it had to do with Iwatobis’ waters and ocean bed and the old lores surrounding it, or there was a need for a guide to tour the arrestingly beautiful but dangerous rocky scenery, Yamazaki Sousuke was your man. This was common knowledge around these parts.
And so, he desperately needed another pair of hands around; someone he could trust with the costumers. And preferably, someone that wouldn't burn down the place in one go.
Thankfully, he still had some free time during lunch and so he could catch a breath over small talk with a friend every now and then. Currently this was one of these moments, said friend being Rin that had graciously brought donuts to go with the coffee Sousuke usually offers.
"You know just the day before yesterday that weird guy, that works at the laboratory– the one just down the road—" Sousuke motioned, picking up a delicacy with green tea-frosting on.
"Oh! You mean Rei!" Rin exclaimed.
"Yeah, that guy— so, he comes here, ok; and I'm thinking 'alright, maybe he needs something from the store for those weird experiments he's conducting from time to time. No big deal.' And the man just straight out asks the most bizarre question ever." He says in between bites.
"Ever; like what? Your horoscope?" Rin laughs.
"That's not weird man— actually, Hazuki asked me that a while back." Sousuke retorted with a straight face.
But Rin almost choke on his coffee; spraying most of it over Sousuke and the donut he was eating.
No. That wasn't out of character at all, he thought while coughing, still out of breath. It was so ironic that it was very much possible.
Sousuke wiped down his face with his hand and threw the donut to the trash can next to him. Then, pulling out a paper tissue from a nearby box, he wiped his hands and said: "Thanks; coffee bath was what I needed."
"Well, sorry but that was really unexpected. Don't just go on and say stuff like that with this face. I almost choked here! Jeez—" Rin said around an indignant huff.
Sousuke regarded him unamused for a bit and continued; "Well, anyway— so, he comes in and asks me right out of the blue, whether I'm familiar with someone."
"What; just like that? That is odd." Rin bugged his eyes out and put a finger under his lips in a show of exaggerated bafflement.
"Yeah, thanks! So he comes here and asks me if I knew Nanase Haruka; I mean what the— what?" He asks, pausing midway his narration after noticing the others’ expression.
Rin has a scowl on his face and the look in his eyes is full of plain disapproval.
"What!" Sousuke asks again, impatiently.
"… I can't believe you, man." Rin says, "You knew Haru, didn't you? He was the chef at that pastry store that—"
"Yeah, I know who he is. So what? What does that have anything to do with asking me, though?" Sousuke cut him off, "I don't get it, Rin!"
Rin stared at him for a few good seconds, measuring him. He finally said: "Sousuke, have you forgotten about Haru? It's only natural that he'd ask about him…"
Sousuke looked at Rin; he seemed genuinely confused. "Why?" He said.
Rin fixed a disbelieving stare at him, before he answered: "You do remember that the memorial of the 'great disaster', was just this week, right?"
"Yeah. So?" He retorted. Still looking clueless.
"So the one third of the towns' men were killed that day!" Rin replied; angry.
Sousuke kept looking at him like an idiot, unable to connect the dots.
So Rin had to spell it out for him, huh?
"Haru went missing that day, too!" Rin yelled at him.
Sousukes' eyes flickered wildly. "Now, hold on!' He said throwing his arms open, "We don't know that for sure. Besides, every single one of the missing were fishermen. He simply doesn't add up, Rin. Plus— We found all the others bodies, but we never found his!"
Rin narrowed his eyes but he was composed and his voice level, as he said: "No. You never found him."
An open accusation—
"What— what's that supposed to mean? Are you implying that I screwed up in the search? Because I wasn't looking alone—" The towering man tried to defend himself; index finger tapping down on the worn, narrow desk as if to point out something there but...
The redhead cut him off with: "Never said that; but you were the only one that searched the caves and the water. No one else had a boat that worked at that time…"
"Now wait a second! I looked up everywhere! I treated them all equally! I even went the extra mile and dove to the caves to search for him as you had suggested, Rin!" Sousuke exclaimed, irritated – something that didn’t happen too often.
"That's because he wasn't in the town for at least a couple hours before the storm and Makoto said he was going to the caves from time to time to calm down or whatever…" He explained calmly, bowing his head.
Sousuke furrowed his brows at his friend. Looking at Rin like that, he felt cornered. Both guilty and betrayed. And right out powerless. "So you send me out there based on what Tachibana told you? Then it's even more possible that he just up and left. He did appeared out of nowhere in this town after all. He could have just leave—"
"You were also out of town…" Rin’s firm voice echoed sharp throughout the small back-office.
These words rang as clear and heavy as the howling sirens of the towns’ port in Sousuke's’ mind —
"What?" He manage, his lips taut in a grim line.
"When we got the report at the station, about fifteen minutes before the storm; I came here to ask you to prepare a rescue boat. You weren't here; the shop was closed and the only one to have seen you was Mizumi as you left it, approximately two hours prior to the event— just at the time that Haru was last seen. I'm not implying anything but… where have you been those two hours, Sousuke?" Rin slowly looked up again; piercing empty and far away teal eyes with his own unwavering ones – that spoke volumes of his concerns for his friend but also how full of determination he truly was – in an attempt to salvage the whole truth.
"Heh— 'you're not implying anything'. Is that so?" He scoffed bitterly.
–––––
At that moment in the fire station at the outskirts of the small fish town.
"Ne, ne, Mako-chan, will you come with me and Rei-chan to the beach this afternoon?" A gleeful voice bubbled in the air in the kitchen of the station.
"Eh? Ah— I'm sorry but there are some things I have to take care of today. Maybe tomorrow?" Makoto said sweetly with a smile, closing the fridge; a carton of milk in his hand.
"Eeeh~ all you say these days is that you have things to take care of, Mako-chaaan. You promised that we'd go swimming when the weather got better and the weather is supper these days but you're still saying 'no'! Are you avoiding me? Ah! Could it be you're avoiding Rei-chan?! If so then that's not a good thing to—" The energetic blonde was furrowing and puffing his cheeks at him, but—
"N–no! I'm not avoiding either one of you! I just had something that came up this week and I can't go right now, ok? Nagisa?" He said and his voice sweetened just a bit.
Still, Nagisa was too perceptive for Makoto's good.
He tilted his head as he looked at him with a quizzical stare. He said: "You know Mako-chan, lately you seem very happy for some reason… Ah! I know! Mako-chan, you got a girlfriend!" He beamed; a gleam of triumph sparkling in his eyes.
He was so loud, that all the firemen in this room turned to look at them with awe and those in the next came running in, not knowing what had happened.
"No! Shh—" Makoto attempt, blushing furiously; ready to explode.
'Mako-chan… he was hiding something though. For days now!' Nagisa thought, looking up at his relaxed disposition. Something that made this whole ordeal worth it. Something that made him, happy.
"Say, Mako-chan— if it's not a girlfriend, then why are you so happy these past few days?" Nagisa asked him quietly.
Maybe it was the way he said it, because Makoto froze. He turned surprised to face Nagisa and after a long moment, his face morphed again, a small but gentle smile curving the line of his lips. "Actually," he started, "I found something I thought I had lost forever…" He said and his eyes moved with overwhelming emotion.
"Eh? Found— something lost?" Nagisa repeated questioningly, eyes wide in wonder.
"Hm," Makoto nodded. "You see— I found it on Monday, as I got home from work…"
Wandavision Ep 4
I have no people in my house to scream about this with and thus I shall be liveblogging my watching experience. Spoilers ahead, please only read once you’ve watched the episode!
oh? are we finally acknowledging the fact that the snap would have drastically changed the world? looking at that trauma now are we?
I already miss the Wandavision intro. superior to the marvel one by FAR
SWORD HQ looks like a train station. Or the JLA hall from young Justice
they went thru the effort to remove the security clearance from everybody who was dusted haha
my girl Monica getting some recognition in the house! Yes appreciate her!
hmm so SWORD was around before the snap? Working before IW on a space program? It makes sense that their funding was slashed and the program stopped but this could have Implications for world tech
The more I see Monica the more I love her? “I was the only choice” “I wasn’t going to say it” QUEEN
LET HER GO TO SPACE COWARDS
she does not need more time! Like any proper Marvel character she does her grieving through fighting aliens!
THE MAGIC TRICK COP FROM ANT MAN AND THE WASP
this witness seems VERY protected if even their family has forgotten them
“No such place!” Wish I had the confidence of this guy standing in front of the Westview sign proclaiming it doesn’t exist
the helicopter! now we’re getting somewhere
“Careful Rambeau!” don’t worry she comes from a long line of experts in touching weird energy fields
DARCY MY GIRL
astrophysics? a step up from poly sci I congratulate you!
“Dr Lewis” you tell him girl wow I’m proud of her she’s done so well
as an actual astrophysics student I Will be judging the science
Interesting using microwaves. This probably indicates that she does most of her work with radiowaves. Astrophysics is very familiar with all EMR but as far as I’m aware more spectral analysis is done with radiowaves than microwaves, but they’re right next to each other so easy for her to recognize
Analog system of delivering a television signal over radio waves! It’s legit although a little weird they didn’t mention radio waves by name
hello mr beekeeper. methinks this mission will not go as planned
So sitcom laugh tracks sound pretty creepy in a military base
oh I know this show! This is a good episode
...technically all radiation dates back to the Big Bang that’s not important information
the universe knows that this sitcom is literally all we want from the world
so are the credit names all in universe characters who are important? Or is that a massive fourth wall break?
fandom levels of analysis happening here
Hey! It looks like they got more episodes than we did! release the tapes marvel. where’s the missing wandavision eps
unsure why they made Darcy an astrophysicist at this point. She appears to be tracking down people and doing stuff with wavelength emission which there are regular physicists who do that stuff too? astrophysics is more for stuff like, yknow STARS. of the non television sort
So they’re also getting the commercial breaks? I hope they’re analyzing the heck out of those with a therapist as well as scientists
how long has this poor man been crawling through the sewers?
They’re all as invested as I am in watching Wanda and Vision be cute, this makes me very happy
“you want any” HE THOUGHT SHE MEANT BABIES I’M DYING
wow they’re really not getting any of the same creepy stuff we get huh? dang that editing
full anti Mr Rogers moment here
so this is the first time we’ve seen Wanda using her powers in the form of red lightning again isn’t it?
Also like. Full sympathy for Monica but I cannot help but cheer for Wanda. You go girl, one woman neighborhood watch, evict that outsider
she just wants to be happy with her family guys! Just leave her alone!
OH GOSH OH NO THE IW FLASHBACKS ARE HERE
well it is final. This couple will kill me. Wanda’s literally keeping Vision alive through the power of sheer will and created an AU to keep him safe and give them a place where they can be happy
“It’s all Wanda.” Yeah that’s right, this is what happens when your most powerful Avenger is given literally the worst hand of cards ever and no therapy!
Also can’t believe it’s canon that Wanda’s a better writer than all of Marvel
Wanda and Vision and Billy and Tommy on the couch together! A happy perfect family!
Final thoughts: although I enjoyed getting to see Monica and Darcy and Jimmy I cannot help but be sad Wanda and Vision did not get as much screen time (heh)
I am torn between wanting SWORD to rescue the missing town and just. letting Wanda live her life geez people
Also is the beekeeper gone? what happened to him? Did he get shot back into the sewers? Is this why the time period keeps changing?
Stay tuned for next Friday I guess as we receive more answers and questions! I love this show
“Oi, KID. I found you.”
Kaito stiffened at the call of his moniker. He tried to act as natural as possible when he turned to the steely-eyed child glaring up at him. He held onto his police issue hat, as if to check his disguise was still in place, even though he knew it was. “I’m sorry little one, but I’m not sure who you’re talking to? There are no other children here and, as you can see, I am clearly an adult.”
“Yeah, yeah. And I’m the Queen of England.” The boy, Tantei-kun, gave him a very unimpressed look. “Now, either I can go tell Nakamori-keibu that one of his officers has been replaced with a wolf in sheep’s skin—or, you can hand it over.”
Kaito grimaced at the kid’s ultimatum.
Because it wasn’t a gem or stolen good the kid was asking for. It wasn’t even candy or a cup of coffee, which might also be reasonable. No, it was a small two-ounce container of KID’s special concealer mix. He used it for everything from hiding bruises and marks to blending a fake face with his natural skin tone.
And Tantei-kun had taken to accosting him every few months for a new container. If Kaito didn’t prepare the stuff by hand, he would have been out a fortune in make-up costs.
What use did the little detective have for make-up anyway? He was six, for crying out loud! How did KID end up as his black-market make-up dealer?
Kaito sighed at the thought.
No, he knew how this had happened. Or at least when it had happened.
It was the second heist with little Tantei-kun in the ring. The Suzuki Company had put out a challenge to steal the lady of the company’s jewel. KID, of course, answered the call and took the disguise of Mouri Ran in order to remain close enough to pull off the heist and still get away cleanly.
Not as cleanly as he had hoped, since the boy he now knew as Edogawa Conan, Tantei-kun, managed to corner him before he could make his escape. Instead of calling the inspector on him, though, Tantei-kun had asked him a question.
“What’s that stuff on your wrist?” the boy had asked, a field ball caught beneath his foot.
At the question, Kaito had blinked. He had been surprised the boy had even noticed the thin, dry coating that covered his Mark. After having worn it for years, Kaito had managed to blend the paste seamlessly with his skin. Like there was never a Mark to begin with.
“It’s a special concoction that can conceal any mark. It goes on like make-up and dries to the texture and flexibility of skin. It’s water-resistant and lasts for days, so long as you don’t treat it too roughly.” Kaito had held up his arm, ignoring the panicked rush that came with displaying his Marked wrist so easily.
It didn’t matter that it was concealed. It didn’t matter that it couldn’t be traced back to his civilian self. It didn’t matter that his civilian self had been ‘Markless’ for years by this point. The knowledge of what lay underneath the thin veneer of lies still caused his heart to quicken.
He dutifully kept his face blank of those fears, choosing a taunting smile instead. “I’m surprised you noticed it at all.”
“I’m observant like that,” the boy had said, gaze dark. “Where do you buy it?”
“I don’t.” KID had laughed at the unimpressed look the boy shot him. “Klepto-urges aside, I didn’t buy this. I made it. None of that commercial stuff could compare.”
The boy had given a contemplative hum, obviously deep in thought. Just as KID had secreted a flash grenade into his hand and plucked his emergency sunglasses from their hiding place, the boy had spoken. “I want some.”
KID had paused in his escape attempt. “… Heh?”
“I want some,” the boy had repeated. “Give me some, or I’ll turn you over to the Inspector.”
“… What if I don’t have any on me?” KID had asked, curious beyond measure.
“Nakamori-Keibu it is,” the kid had said and thrown back his head to call to the searching officers.
“Ah, ah, ah! Wait! Okay, okay!” KID had frantically waved his hands and pulled out a small bottle that he always kept on him. It was supposed to be for emergencies, but bargaining with a six-year-old wasn’t too far out of that territory. Plus, it meant he didn’t have to waste a light grenade. The materials to make those cost far more than the little bottle of concealer did.
The boy had looked all too pleased with the trade-off and let KID go without a complaint. Kaito had thought that would be the end of it, but oh how wrong he’d been.
Every few months since then, the boy would track him down and demand another bottle in return for letting KID escape. Now, it wasn’t to say that KID didn’t like Tantei-kun coming to his heists. He loved showing off to his little critic and making those blue eyes widen in awe at a trick the other had never seen before. It quite honestly made Kaito’s whole month, just to get the boy to smile.
But there were times, like now, where the boy was a bit too serious, saw through KID’s disguises a bit too quickly, that made KID wonder just what the boy needed the concealer for.
Though he would never get a straight answer, it never hurt to ask. “What does a kid like you even need concealer for?”
“Reasons that you don’t need to worry about.” Tantei-kun raised an eyebrow at him. “I can always go find Nakamori-keibu if you refuse.”
“I wasn’t refusing,” Kaito grumbled. “Just stalling.”
“Stalling? Really? And you’re supposed to be good at lying.” Tantei-kun scowled at him. “Now, hand it over. Ran will be looking for me soon.”
“Hold up! You didn’t answer my question.” Kaito crossed his arms with a huff. “What does a kid like you need with professional-grade concealer?”
“It’s none of your business—!”
“It is my business if you go through four bottles in a year.” Kaito frowned at him. “You know those are supposed to last twice the time, right?”
Tantei-kun glared at him. “If you don’t hand it over right now, I’ll-!”
“What? Go tell Nakamori on me?” Kaito let a grin play at his lips despite the stab of fear he felt. “Then who would you get your black-market make-up from? Your Onee-chan certainly won’t get you any, not without the same questions I’m asking.”
By the look on the kid’s face, KID knew he’d caught him. Tantei-kun tried to hold a brave mask, but seconds later, it crumbled. “Please. I need it.”
“Why?” KID repeated. “The only use you have for it is to cover up marks: ink, markers, scars, bruises…”
KID paused at that, his mind suddenly snapping to… horrible repercussions. Kaito often used the concealer to cover injuries left over from KID heists, where Taskforce officers had gotten just a little too close. It wasn’t out of the realm of possibility that Tantei-kun…
“Whatever you’re thinking, you’re wrong,” Tantei-kun hissed, immediately defensive. Which, again, could be indicative of…
“So you’re telling me that you aren’t being abused at home?” KID asked, voice suddenly toneless. “I know Mouri is a ‘great detective’, but that doesn’t mean he’s a good man. And you aren’t related to either him or your precious Onee-chan, that much I’ve gathered. It would be all too easy to—?”
“Mouri may be a drunk, but he’s a useless one.” Tantei-kun rolled his eyes, but his body was relaxed. There was no defense in his posture. He wasn’t even tense. “The worst he’s done was box my ears for running around a crime scene. Then again, he’s the only adult that seems to think a child shouldn’t be around a crime scene, so… I think that evens out.”
KID wasn’t thrilled with the answer, but he was sure Tantei-kun was smart enough to go to the authorities if someone was abusing or neglecting him. Or, at least, KID hoped so. (He made a mental note to check in, just in case.) “Then why?”
“I… can’t tell you,” Tantei-kun said through his teeth, like the answer had to be dragged from his throat.
“Then I can’t give you more,” Kaito said simply.
“KID-!”
“I’m sorry, Tantei-kun, but I’ve been an enabler for too long.” Kaito held up his hands in a ‘what can you do’ gesture. “If you want more concealer, you’re going to have to tell me what you want it for.”
Tantei-kun pursed his lips, eyes tracing Kaito’s face in a calculating manner. When it became apparent there was no way around it, he hissed a sigh through his teeth, dragged a hand through his hair, then threw his arms open wide. “Okay! I’ll tell you!”
Kaito straightened, eager to finally get an answer to the questions that had plagued him for months now.
“But not here.” Tantei-kun gave the empty hallways a look. “Too risky. You know where Agasa’s house is?”
“The scientist you and your friends hang out with?” KID thought for a moment. “Yeah, I know of him.”
“Meet me at his house. Tonight,” Tantei-kun ordered. “I’ll tell you there.”
“Got it.” KID nodded. Then he blinked when Tantei-kun held out a hand. “Ha?”
“I promised to tell you, so hand it over,” Tantei-kun clarified.
“Oh-ho no.” KID shook his head. “No way, Tantei-kun. I’m holding it ransom.”
“You think I won’t keep my promise?” Oh, the boy looked pissed at that.
“Promise? Yes.” KID poked the kid’s cheek. “Not call Nakamori-keibu in an ambush since you already got what you want? No.”
The kid clicked his tongue. “You’re sharper than I give you credit for.”
“I should be insulted by that,” KID said. “But now, I’m just disappointed in you. To think, my favorite critic would try to ambush me!”
“Just for that, I’m telling Nakamori to check all of his officers.”
Tantei-kun didn’t. But he did warn Nakamori that KID was waiting for rain in order to pull off his heist. In spite of the extra information, KID still managed to pull of his heist with more fanfare than usual, given it was a ‘reverse’ heist.
And that Tantei-kun thanked him afterwards, well, that was just icing on the cake.
*             *             *             *             *
Kaito found himself standing outside a large house, staring down at a little girl and floundering for words. “Uh… is… Conan-kun here?”
The girl stared for a long moment before looking over her shoulder. “Edogawa-kun! Your thief is here!”
Wha— how rude! Kaito had gone through the painstaking effort to disguise himself as Mouri Ran again. She could at least have the decency to treat him like the woman he was!
On second thought, how had she known…?
“I told her you were coming by,” Tantei-kun said, face pinched in a scowl. “Can you not dress like Ran when we talk? This is already hard enough as it is.”
“Hmm…” Kaito dropped a few smoke bombs and flash-changed his outfit. Hakuba Saguru posed on the doorstep, self-righteous smirk in place. “This better?”
Tantei-kun gave him an unimpressed look. “… I’ll take it. Come in.”
He and the little girl stepped to the side to allow Kaito in. Tantei-kun continued further in as the girl closed the door behind him.
“Concealer,” the girl ordered, hand out.
“…I’m sorry?” Kaito stared down at her.
“Haibara is working on recreating the formula for the concealer you have,” Tantei-kun clarified from the couch in the spacious living room. “That way I don’t have to rely on you to get more.”
“Aw, but then how else will I convince you to let me go?” KID whined. Still, he dug out the small bottle and dropped it into waiting hands.
“Something tells me you can get by without me blackmailing you.” Tantei-kun wrinkled his nose. “Or the other way around.”
“Hmm… that’s fair.” Kaito seated himself on the other couch, facing his little critic like the opponents they were. “Now, why do you need the concealer? And so much of it, at that.”
“For starters, both Haibara and I need it. Your comment of how it should last twice as long as it has been? Doesn’t pan out when you have two people using it. As for why I need it…” Tantei-kun inhaled stiffly and straightened his shoulders. “I need to hide my Mark. My Soulmark.”
Kaito blinked. Then laughed. “Hah! Right. A six-year-old with a Soulmark? Really, Tantei-kun, I thought we were being honest here.”
“We are. I am,” Tantei-kun said, voice agitated. “I’m not actually six. I’m sixteen. My Mark appeared on my tenth birthday, like all other Mark Soulmates. When I got turned into a child, it didn’t go away.”
“Right… and how, exactly did you get turned into a child?” Kaito couldn’t help the disbelief in his voice. Yes, Tantei-kun was quite smart for a child, but all physical evidence pointed to him being some sort of prodigy, not a sixteen-year-old turned six.
“I was investigating some shady dealings by men in black suits. They got the jump on me and forced me to down some experimental medicine. All their previous research said it was supposed to kill people, but a microscopic percentage…” Tantei-kun looked down at his hands. “Get turned into this.”
“So you’re saying that a magic drug de-aged you… and you expect me to believe this?” Kaito’s eyebrows rose at the absurdity.
“Edogawa-kun is not the only person it happened to,” the little girl, Haibara, said as she came to sit beside Tantei-kun. She had a rag in hand and was wiping at her own skin. Flakes of concealer came off on the rag until a black script could be seen. Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya was printed as plain as day. “I took the pill of my own accord, but it had similar results. Since then, I’ve found myself here, living as someone else.”
The words… looked real, but Kaito knew just how easily they could be fabricated. With a wave of his hand, he pulled out a handkerchief and a small bottle of his home-made solvent and dabbed a bit on the cloth. He reached forward, then paused. “May I?”
Haibara looked uneasy, but offered her arm.
“What is that?” Tantei-kun demanded as he watched on with scrutinizing eyes.
“An all-around solvent,” Kaito explained as he took a gentle hold of her wrist. “Works on most household stains: markers, pen, makeup, grease, et cetera. Strong enough to pull them off, but still gentle enough to not irritate skin.”
As he spoke, he worked at the black words, as if they were a difficult smudge. But after working diligently for several seconds, he pulled away the cloth to reveal the black lines, still as clear as day. They were no impermanent markings. So either someone had the insane notion to allow their six-year-old to get a name tattooed on their wrist, or… “It’s real.”
“Like I said.” Tantei-kun huffed.
“You’ll have to forgive me,” KID said as he threw the handkerchief up. It disappeared in mid-air as he secreted away the bottle of his solvent. “It is not every day, my favorite critic turns out to be a de-aged… how old did you say you were?”
“Sixteen,” Tantei-kun replied.
Kaito blinked. That was the same age as him.
“And I was eighteen before I was shrunk,” Haibara added, running her fingers over her wrist. “And I do say ‘shrunk’. If we were de-aged, then our Marks should have left too. As they have not…”
“Then time wasn’t re-wound.” Kaito got the gist of what she meant. “So you’re using the concealer to cover your Marks, so that people don’t know that you’ve shrunk.”
“That and to evade the organization that is behind the toxin that shrunk us.” Haibara looked down at her lap. “I was with them for many years before I managed to get away. They know me. They know what I look like. They know what Mark I have. If they were to ever find me, they would put a bullet through my skull before I ever had a chance to run.”
Kaito swallowed thickly and tried not to think about the snipers that sometimes took shots at his heists. He tried not to think of the men who had killed his father, or the impossible chase they were competing against him in. There was no way Tantei-kun’s organization and his could be related.
No way… right?
“As for me,” Tantei-kun said loudly and without caution. “I just don’t believe in Marks.”
That brought Kaito up short.
“Are you surprised?” Tantei-kun asked. Kaito wondered what had given him away. “You shouldn’t be. You of all people should know that some people don’t believe in the Marks.”
“I have my own reasons for keeping mine covered. Not the least of which being how easy it would be to track me down as a civilian if the Inspector was able to see my Mark,” Kaito explained. It was an excuse in every sense of the word. Even if the Inspector saw, it wouldn’t help. Kuroba Kaito didn’t have a Mark. He never had.
“Is that so?” Tantei-kun made a discerning noise before giving a shrug. “I just don’t want to subscribe to the idea of Nominative Determinism.”
KID frowned. He hadn’t heard of that before. “Noma… what now?”
“The idea that I’ll fall in love with someone just because their name is on my wrist.” Tantei-kun paused, then rolled his eyes. “Or, technically, it has to do with certain people being named certain things and then going on to follow a certain career path. Like a person named Hiro becoming a policeman or a person with the last name Bowser going on to lead Nintendo. But I think it applies to this situation too.”
“Please.” Haibara sighed heavily, like this was an argument they had multiple times before. “You just don’t want to believe in fate.”
“Some meta-physical entity that guides all people to a certain end despite the free-will people exert over their own lives is just a bunch of hog-wash.” Tantei-kun huffed.
“And the fact that meta-physical entity also knew that you preferred men over women just happens to be a coincidence.” Haibara pointed out.
Tantei-kun just scowled at her.
“So you aren’t planning to look for your Marked?” KID asked. “I have to say, this is the first time I’ve met someone who didn’t want to find their Soulmate.”
“I want to, I just don’t want it to be because of some ink on my skin!” Tantei-kun waved a hand around as if it would get his point across. “The names don’t even mean anything!”
“Oh?” KID cocked his head to the side. “How so?”
“Look at it this way. Say that the name on my wrist is something like… Okino Yoko,” Tantei-kun decided at random. “Who’s the first person to pop into your mind?”
“The famous celebrity,” KID answered without hesitation.
“Exactly!” Tantei-kun pointed to him. “But Okino Yoko isn’t the only one to have that name. There could be another Okino Yoko in Kyoto that lived her entire life as a shopkeeper or maybe one in Hokaido that is the CEO of a business. Either one of them could be my ‘Soulmate’ but because I recognized the celebrity first, I would become fixated on her, whether she has my name or someone else’s or no name at all. And that’s just one example!”
He threw his hands up in emphasis. “Think of how many people have the first name Hiro! Or over in America, the last name Smith! There are only so many last names and so many first names that people use. It is not entirely outside the realm of possibility that the name on your wrist could be shared by dozens of people around the world. That’s not even taking into account the people who legally change their names over the years.”
“And so, instead of trying to find the right one, you decide not to try at all?” KID couldn’t help a raised brow. “That doesn’t sound like you, Tantei-kun.”
“I’m not giving up.” Tantei-kun scowled. “I’m just not letting myself worry over it. If I like a person, I’ll ask them out. If I don’t like someone, I’m not obligated to go on a date just because they have the right name. I may have a name on my wrist, but I’m not going to let it rule my life.”
That was… a unique way of looking at things. A brave way of looking at things. Kaito… he wished his reason was just as good. In the end, though, he was just a coward.
“Which is why Haibara needs more samples of your concealer, so I can keep using it even when I put you behind bars,” Tantei-kun said decisively.
Kaito couldn’t help a laugh at that. “Well, you keep at it, Tantei-kun. I’m sure you’ll get me one of these days.”
“What makes you think I haven’t already?” Tantei-kun asked. Kaito froze. “Haibara, how long does it take for emergency services to respond to a phone call?”
“About eight minutes,” Haibara said calmly.
It had been seven minutes since Kaito walked in. Seven minutes since Tantei-kun had come to the door. Seven minutes since Kaito had handed off the newest sample of his concealer.
Alarms sounded in the distance.
*             *             *             *             *
That was a dirty trick Tantei-kun pulled, but Kaito really couldn’t blame him. Their little game of cat and mouse wouldn’t be nearly as fun without a little surprise every now and then.
Oh, he’d managed to get away, of course, but it told KID that he had to be careful not to let his guard down around the little detective, no matter how adorable the boy was.
(Should he really be thinking that? Tantei-kun was a child after all. Or technically, he was sixteen? But then, Kaito didn’t think his sixteen-year-old self would be categorized as ‘adorable’. ‘Dangerous’ maybe, or ‘sexy’ if Kaito was feeling generous. He didn’t actually know what Tantei-kun looked like grown up, but for as active as the boy was, he had to be a looker.)
Despite the latest failure, the boy didn’t let up. He still hounded KID for another bottle of concealer every few months—which KID handed over easily now that he knew the boy’s reasons. Tantei-kun still tried to turn him in every chance he got, despite the fact that Haibara had yet to recreate the formula that KID used to make the concealer. KID wondered, idly, if Haibara had stopped making progress on purpose.
A certified child genius, already holding a PhD in chemistry and biology? No way it took her more than a month or two to figure it out.
But she didn’t, so Tantei-kun kept coming back to him and the cycle repeated itself over and over again.
Until one day, there was a change.
On the Mystery Train heist, Tantei-kun tracked KID down again, but instead of demanding a bottle of concealer, he nearly begged KID for his help in saving Haibara’s life. Kaito ended up in a train car full of explosives for his troubles and had to ditch a fast-moving vehicle to hang-glide his way to safety, but he liked to think he and Tantei-kun came to and understanding.
That, and he got Tantei-kun’s phone number, so he could antagonize him all he wanted from a safe distance away.
Annoying text messages turned into random memes, then into angry phone calls and quiet murmurings in the middle of the night.
Kaito learned that the organization Tantei-kun was after had eerily similar goals to his own. They both sought immortality. They both worked under codenames and a strict set of ‘no-second-chance’ rules. They both worked for one, unknown individual that seemed to be pulling all the strings.
The similarities were too close to ignore.
“We might be after the same thing here,” Tantei-kun said, voicing the one subject neither had broached since the beginning of their strange alliance. “These organizations, they’re too similar.”
“Similar doesn’t always mean the same, Tantei-kun,” Kaito replied easily, though he couldn’t find any doubt to back it up. “Correlation doesn’t always equal causation. You, of all people, should know that.”
“Even so,” Tantei-kun’s tone shifted lower, as if suddenly worried someone would overhear. “I think we should keep each other posted. Something I find might benefit you and something you find might give me another lead.”
“So you want to, what? Work together?” Kaito couldn’t help the grin playing at his lips. “A thief and a detective?”
“We’re pooling our resources,” Tantei-kun said but without his usual bite. “Just… keep me updated, okay? I’ll keep you in the loop too.”
“Roger, Meitantei.” Kaito gave a little mock-salute, even though he knew Tantei-kun wouldn’t be able to see. “How about we make it a little competition, ne? See who can take down their organization first?”
Tantei-kun just scoffed in answer.
So they began to exchange information. Tantei-kun shared bits and pieces of his daily life as he tried to track down the people who had shrunk him. Kaito very carefully divulged the pieces he thought couldn’t be traced back to himself. Their talks moved from information to checking in to relaying silly tales about the day.
It was smooth. It was subtle. The way that Tantei-kun moved into his life. Kaito didn’t realize just how much it meant to have the other boy, the other teen, as an ally, (as a friend) until one question had him stopping cold in his tracks.
“Where did you even come up with the recipe for this concealer?” Tantei-kun wondered aloud. “Haibara swears there’s nothing like it on the market. It’s super practical—it barely comes off when I wear my watch over it! You must have gone through a lot of trial and error to get it to work right.”
And Kaito… couldn’t help the painfully true answer that slipped through his teeth. “I didn’t.”
“What?”
“I didn’t come up with it,” he repeated stiffly, mouth working on its own. “I… got the recipe from someone else.”
There was a long pause before Tantei-kun spoke. “The first Kaitou KID.”
Kaito gasped, eyes going wide. “How… How did you…?”
“It doesn’t take a genius to see that the KID from before the seven year gap was far more cautious than you. He didn’t flaunt his skills. He didn’t play to the crowd. Sure, he was a performer, but he was calm, cautious, had everything laid out to the point where he could literally walk through the police officers, pluck the gem from the display, and disappear,” Tantei-kun listed off. “You aren’t like that.”
“What?” Kaito let out a bitter laugh. “Are you saying I’m not good enough? Are you saying the first KID was better?”
It wouldn’t be a lie. And Kaito knew that all too well.
“Not at all. The first KID was talented, but he was there with a goal. He wanted the items he stole. He didn’t want to play up the crowd more than he had to,” Tantei-kun said quietly. “You… you take risks. Big risks. Scaling-the-side-of-a-building risks. But they always pay off. Your fans always come back for more and draw a larger and larger crowd. He would appear in the spotlight, but you… you live in it. There’s not really a way to compare the two of you, other than the First KID and the Second.”
Despite himself, Kaito’s eyes started to burn. His nose got a little clogged and his throat got a painful lump in it. Because Tantei-kun had just complimented him, had seen Kaito’s plights and acknowledged him and set him equal to the first KID—to his father, Kuroba Toichi.
And Tantei-kun would never lie about this.
“He was my father,” Kaito croaked before he could stop himself. “The first KID. He was my father.”
Tantei-kun didn’t say anything. The silence was an answer in and of itself.
“He was after Pandora too. Just like I am. He’s the reason I’m searching for it.” Kaito paused to take a steadying breath and blink back the tears. This pain was years old. He should be over it by now. It still hurt, especially since… “The organization… they killed him for it. They found out his identity, and killed him in front a crowd of people… in front of me. They made it look like an accident, and I believed that for years, and then—!”
“And then you found out the truth,” Tantei-kun finished when it got too hard to speak. “And decided make them pay.”
Kaito managed to make some noise of confirmation.
“While I don’t like the way you went about it, I can understand your reasoning.” Tantei-kun let out a tired sigh. “Looks like we’ve both dug our own holes, huh?”
Kaito let out a wet laugh.
“Your father… were he and your mother…?”
“Soulmates,” Kaito confirmed. “When he… when he was gone… it shattered her. It took weeks for her to get out of bed. Months to even start to get her life back in order. Even now, she can’t stay in the house for long because it’s where he lived. I could only do so much.”
“I’m sorry that happened,” Tantei-kun said. “I’m sorry you had to recover from that. I’m sorry you had to help her recover from that.”
“Sometimes… Sometimes I think…” he started, non-sequitur. He clutched the phone tighter to himself, spoke more softly as if it would keep the truth from escaping. “I think… that it would be better off if they hadn’t met. If they hadn’t fallen in love. If they hadn’t been Soulmates, because then… then she wouldn’t have been so hurt.”
Tantei-kun took a long moment to think before answering. “I think she would disagree. I think she would say that, even though there was pain, she had some of her happiest moments with him. Most every Soulmate says that. And besides, if they hadn’t fallen in love… they wouldn’t have had you.”
“And I’m someone special?” Kaito either laughed or hiccupped, he wasn’t sure. “I’m just a thief.”
“A thief who has done more daring stunts than anyone alive. A thief who has consistently remained out of law enforcement hands through sheer will and luck alone. A thief who is taking on an entire underground criminal syndicate in order to avenge his father who had left this world too early,” Tantei-kun said heatedly. “Calling you ‘just a thief’, is like calling me ‘just a detective’.”
“I guess you would know, Meitantei.” And this time, Kaito knew it was a laugh.
“I would indeed,” Tantei-kun said, matter-of-factly. Then his voice softened again. “Is that… why you hide your Mark? Is that why you don’t believe in Soulmates?”
“… I believe in them,” Kaito said quietly. He sniffled, trying to keep the nasally tone out of his voice. “I just… don’t know if I’m strong enough to be with one. Or if they are strong enough to handle having me as one. If I went out the same way as my father…”
The thought of someone else going through what his mother had… it was painful. For it to be someone he loved? Someone he wanted to be happy? Someone he only wished to see a smile from?
The thought was agonizing.
“… I won’t try to tell you how to act or how to think. If you want to avoid them, I won’t try to convince you otherwise,” Tantei-kun said. “But for what it’s worth? I think anyone would be grateful to have you. For however much time you gave them.”
And in spite of himself, Tantei-kun’s words really did make Kaito feel better.
*             *             *             *             *
After their talk, they grew closer in a way Kaito could not verbalize. They didn’t meet up more often. They didn’t call any more than they had (though it was a lot to start with). The subject of their calls did change from time to time, but not with any consistency.
It was as if they had fallen into some kind of routine that Kaito never wanted to end. A sort of comfort he never thought he’d have with another person—not after covering his Mark and promising to forget about the name he’d seen.
Kaito found he didn’t want to let that go.
“Would you ever tell them?” He found himself asking one day.
It was during one of their rare physical meet-ups, where he gave Tantei-kun some more concealer, even though Haibara had definitely solved the formula long before then. He knew it was an excuse to see the other, knew Tantei-kun saw it the same, but neither of them said a word. Neither wanted the charade to end.
“Tell who what?” Tantei-kun asked, confused by the off-topic question.
“Your…” What did people call their significant others if not Soulmates? “Lover. If you end up marrying someone who doesn’t have the same name as the one on your wrist. Will you ever tell them?”
Tantei-kun looked thoughtful as he paused to ruminate. “I think… I would give them the option. I don’t want to lie to them. A relationship built on a lie isn’t a relationship at all. But I know that… some people handle the truth worse than a lie. If they don’t want to know, then I’ll keep it hidden for as long as I can.”
“As long as you can?”
“I’m not perfect and I won’t claim to be. Accidents happen.” Tantei-kun shrugged. “Despite my best efforts, they will likely find out either way.”
Yeah… Kaito had often thought the same. He opened his mouth to agree, but what came out instead was, “I want to date you.”
Tantei-kun stared at him, wide-eyed. His gaze went from Kaito, down to his tiny hands, then back to Kaito. “Um…”
Kaito flushed red. “Not now! Not when we’ve got… everything else going on! I meant when you change back.”
“If I change back,” Tantei-kun corrected bitterly.
“When you change back,” Kaito repeated with determination. “I want to meet up and… I don’t know. Go to the movies? Hit an amusement park? Walk around the zoo? Whatever normal teens our age do when they go on dates.”
Tantei-kun snorted. “Because we’re normal teens.”
“By then, we will be,” Kaito said softly. “You’ll be back to your own age, I’ll hang up the mantle of KID for good and we’ll just be… two guys, hanging out. Not six-feet away ‘cause we are gay.”
“Bi,” Tantei-kun corrected, but he had his thinking face on. He looked tentative. “And you won’t be mad that… we aren’t Soulmates?”
Honestly, the thought kind of hurt Kaito a little, but he knew he would always end up in a situation like this. Ever since he decided to ignore the ink on his skin and search for other people’s happiness instead of his own. The fact that Tantei-kun wasn’t entirely focused on their Marks matching actually helped. Instead of telling the long-winded truth, Kaito just smiled and said, “Not at all.”
Tantei-kun’s soft, grateful grin was answer enough.
*             *             *             *             *
It wasn’t a happily ever after, after that conversation.
The organization got word of Tantei-kun. They started tailing him, even as KID tried to act as the distraction. He managed to pull some attention away, but it seemed like the roaches were crawling out of the woodwork.
Tantei-kun’s parents came in to stay, and with them a few members of the American Secret Services. A few insiders in the organization managed to maintain their cover and leak information as they could, but it was obvious they could only do so much.
The game had been set. The clock was ticking forward, carrying them on toward the finally fight as the momentum picked up.
It came to a head in a fiery show-down of chaos and death.
Both sides lost people. Gin and Snake and a number of other agents were gunned down or chose to turn their guns on themselves. Very few were taken into custody. Vermouth was lost to the carnage, unable to free herself of the shadows that had claimed her.
The leader of the ring, Karasuma Renya, was caught, but whether the police would be able to press charges remained to be seen. He had been skillful at keeping his hands clean as his henchmen killed hundreds of people in their wake.
Kaito made it out with multiple sprains and contusions and one (very painful) gunshot wound. But his luck had held up and he managed to survive to see another day. With a full pardon, something he hadn’t been expecting until a piece of paper was shoved into his hands by a very stoic Nakamori.
(He was grateful he had the foresight to give himself a long-term disguise and for Tantei-kun admitting him to the hospital under the name Kaitou KID. He didn’t want to see Nakamori’s face when he realized Kaito had been behind the monocle. Hopefully, he never would.)
As for Tantei-kun… well, he had never left the safety of their home-base.
Oh, he had whined and carried on and bargained with every person that went through the door, but none had let him step foot out of the safe house until the fighting was over. For good reason, too. Though he may be sixteen in mind, taking a six-year-old into battle was just asking for bad things to happen.
He did make one hell of a Chess Master though, as he kept in touch over the headsets everyone was obligated to wear. As he called shots left and right in a deadly calm voice, Kaito was reminded, once again, just how spectacular his favorite critic was.
So Tantei-kun was safe, Kaito was recovering and Haibara was reverse-engineering the toxin that had set off the chain of events that led them to where they were today. Now, it was only a matter of resting and healing from the Day of Reckoning.
That, and meeting Tantei-kun for real, face-to-face.
Kaito still remembered Tantei-kun’s promise back before the worst was over. After having survived what could only be described as the single most idiotic decision of his life, Kaito wanted to cash in on that promise.
When he was finally released from the hospital, he decided he would do just that.
Standing on the curb just outside the front doors, Kaito fidgeted as he waited for his ride. Tantei-kun was supposed to pick him up, but the area was clear, not another car in sight. That didn’t spell good things for his nerves.
Not wanting to lose his confidence, Kaito dialed a well-known number and held his phone up to his ear. It rang twice before an unfamiliar voice answered. “To your left.”
Startled, Kaito looked to his left, only to see…
The most beautiful man he had ever met in his life. Or maybe handsome was a better word? He was impeccably dressed, white button-up ironed straight and navy blue suit jacket just reaching his wrists. His blue eyes sparkled right above a wide, familiar smile as he lowered the phone and hung it up.
He was so different and yet so familiar. It could only be—!
“Tantei-kun?” Kaito whispered, scared he was wrong.
“Technically, my name is Kudou Shinichi, but yes, I am—was the little detective that followed you around.” Tantei-kun rolled his eyes and offered a hand. “It’s nice to meet you, for real this time.”
“The pleasure is all mine,” Kaito said, grasping the other’s hand firmly. He didn’t want to let go.
Then the rest of the words caught up with him.
Kaito blinked, taken aback. “Wait, what did you say your name was?”
“Kudou Shinichi?” Tantei—Kudou Shinichi frowned at him, concerned. “Why?”
Kaito hurriedly dropped their hands so he could drag his sleeve up. It took his three tries as his hands shook and he didn’t want to take his eyes off of Shinichi in order to pay attention to what he was doing.
Shinichi watched him with trepidation as Kaito rubbed off the concealer he’d covered his skin with for the last seven years. It had been days since he’d last applied it, so it rubbed off as easily as the temporary glue he used to hold on his masks.
When most of it had been scrubbed off, he held his wrist out to a now wide-eyed Kudou Shinichi who stared down at it with something akin to horror.
“No. No way.” Shinichi shook his head, then reached forward. He turned his gaze this way and that, like it would change the words if he looked at it the right way. But no, Kudou Shinichi remained scrawled across Kaito’s skin in the deepest of blacks. “That’s not—! That’s not possible! You couldn’t have known!”
“I didn’t,” Kaito said, a little slack-jawed. “I didn’t know who you were until today.”
“But that can’t—!” Shinichi abruptly cut himself off. His sharp gaze came up, trapping Kaito in its magnetic hold. “What’s your name?”
“Kuroba Kaito,” he answered, a little breathless. Because it couldn’t be. It couldn’t just work like that. Fate couldn’t be that spot-on… right?
“But that’s—! But I—!” Shinichi dropped his arm to turn around and yell at the sky. “No!” then he turned to Kaito. “No!”
Kaito wilted at the vehemence with which the word was spat. “No?”
“No, I mean, not ‘no’ to you!” Shinichi hurriedly tried to correct himself. “’Yes’ to you, but ‘no’ to Fate because that can’t—! This cannot be happening! This is bullshit!”
Kaito frowned and reached out to grab Shinichi’s flailing hands. His action was surprising enough to give the detective pause, a hesitation Kaito took advantage of as he checked his right wrist, then his left. It was when Kaito let go one and started to take off Shinichi’s watch that the detective realized what he was doing. “No, Kaito, wait—!”
Kuroba Kaito stared back at him, a little dusty from the remains of the concealer the watch had rubbed away.
“We’re Soulmates,” Kaito breathed as Shinichi yanked his hand free. He looked up, still reeling from the shock. “We’ve known each other for at least a year and we were Soulmates!”
“Things cannot work out this well!” Shinichi continued on with his rant. “The probability of having matching Marks in a world full of ‘Kuroba Kaito’s and ‘Kudou Shinichi’s is so infinitesimally small that—!”
“You didn’t know my name until two minutes ago,” Kaito said as he caught the other by the waist. Shinichi leaned away from him with obvious disapproval, but didn’t try to escape his hold. Kaito just rested his chin on the other’s shoulder. “You can’t claim Nominative Determinism when you didn’t even know who I was.”
“I knew who you were,” Shinichi grumbled, but slid his arms under Kaito’s and hooked his fingers into the back of his jacket. “I knew you were annoying and over-dramatic and… kind and smart and selfless to a fault...”
“Careful! I’ll think you’re complimenting me.” Kaito laughed.
“And egotistical,” Shinichi finished, just to be contrary. “I knew you. I just didn’t have the name to go with it.”
Kaito hummed in agreement. “Best name ever, huh?”
Shinichi let out a sigh, but answered. “Wouldn’t change it for the world.”
And for once, Kaito agreed.
“… I still don’t believe in Fate.”
“Shinichi, by this point, I don’t think you can argue against it.”
“No! Fate isn’t real! Just like Luck and Magic! It’s just a bunch of made up things to make people feel better about themselves!”
“A certain girl in my class would have something to say against you.”
“What was that?”
“I was asking if you wanted to go to the zoo? After all, you did promise me a date, didn’t you?”
A content sigh. “Yeah, I suppose I did.”
It was the best date in history, in Kaito's humble opinion. As well as every date after that.
Think i can request NCT Mark asking the reader to move in with him in a romantic/awkward way?
Wanna move in? - LMH
Tumblr media
- pairing; mark lee x gender neutral!reader
- genre; non idol!au, fluff, romantic
- word count; 950
an: This is probably gonna be the cutest thing I’ve written so far, Mark is just babie to me. Thanks for requesting! And no I didn’t make Mark a florist because of the recent JCC...absolutely not~
-----
‘How do I make asking Y/N to move in romantic?’
Mark had been thinking  about very little else for the past few weeks. You and Mark had been a couple for a good 6 months and the topic of moving in together had come up multiple times. Sighing as he sipped on his coffee on his way to work - at the local florists - he scrolled through his phone, looking online for cute ways to ask you. Would you find a coffee date romantic? Or would a picnic date be better?
Changing into his uniform in the back, Mark arranged the display meticulously - even up to the length of the ribbon - before opening up the store and waiting for the steady stream of customers that greeted him during the week. And it didn’t disappoint - within the hour he was helping customers, ringing up sales and helping Johnny with packaging the deliveries in the back.
Now that it was lunchtime, and the number of customers arriving slowed a tad, it gave the two florists enough time to talk as they ate. They spoke about anything and everything; ranging from flowers to gaming and everything in between. When the topic of y/n came up, Mark couldn’t stop the smile that formed on his face.
“Hey~ look at you lover-boy, head-over-heels huh? Oh wait - weren’t you going to ask them to move in with you?” Johnny asked, sipping in his iced coffee. Nodding, Mark sighed as he recalled his, recent indecisiveness.
“Yeah - it’s just, how? I want it to be romantic, but like - not cheesy or anything, you know? I know Y/N doesn’t like over-the-top stuff, but it’s  not like I can just ask them flat out. It should be something they remember,” Mark explained, sighing as he tried to picture exactly what you’d like.
When the bell above the door rang, the both of them looked towards the front of the store, and Mark’s face lit up when he recognised you. Admiring the various bouquets on display, you gave a tiny wave when you noticed your boyfriend waling through the doors that led to the back.
“Hey Y/N! What, what are you doing here? I thought you had classes today?” He asked, leaning over the counter and scrunching his nose when you pressed a gentle kiss to his lips. A blush tinting his cheeks, Mark rubbed the back of his neck, his eyes reflecting the warm lighting inside the florists.
“Ah - my music professor couldn’t make it, and that was the only class I had today,” You answered, a light shrug coming from you and you snickered when you heard Johnny shouting something along the lines of, ‘take them out on a date dude! I’ll cover you!’
And now you were both blushing.
Sighing, Johnny got up, grabbed Mark’s jacket at handed it to him, a knowing wink coming from the older. Eyes widening when he finally understood what Johnny was talking about, Mark nodded, taking his apron off and setting it to the side, sliding his jacket on. Walking past the counter and taking your hand, Mark looked to you, a hopeful smile playing on his face.
“Well - um - shall we go on a date? There’s a really nice cafe nearby,” He asked, a subtle awkwardness coating his tone. Cute
“ A cafe sounds good! Are you sure it’ll be okay to leave the store?” You ask, and Johnny nods from over Marks shoulder, indicating for the both of you to enjoy yourselves, “”well, if Johnny doesn’t mind being alone, shall we get going? I wanna see this cafe~”
Now all he had to do was ask you to move in. Easy, right?
Oh, if only it was.
Reaching the cafe after a short walk down the street of highly aesthetic shops, Mark opened the door for you and you both walked in, thanking him with a peck to his cheek. Finding a cute window seat for the both of you, you sat down and looked through the menu. All the while, Mark fiddled with his hands, the question he wanted to ask you suddenly becoming hard to say.
Come on, just ask them. It’s just a question, right?
Drinks already ordered, you took Mark’s hands in your own, playing with his hands while you waited for the drinks to arrive. Usually you and Mark would be talking about everything from the florist to your classes, but he was quieter, and you didn’t know why. What was he thinking about?
“Markie~ what’re you thinking about? You’re quieter than usual,”  you remarked, lips curling into a little pout.
“Oh just...things.” He admitted, well - half-admitted. Maybe when the drinks arrived, then it’d be a good time.
And he was right - for the most part. When the drinks arrived, the pair of you were enjoying your drinks, short, quick smiles in between each sip. It was like a photoshoot. His drink halfway done, Mark placed his mug on the table - a little precariously - and took a breath.
“Y/N, you know I love you so much, right?” Looking up from your drink, you nodded, eyes bambi-like, “Well, I was thinking...since we’ve talked about it alot...Doyouwanttomoveinwithme?”
“Baby, huh? You’re gonna have to slow down,” Leaning in closer, you set the mug down. Gosh, now he felt awkward.
“Can you - no - do you want to move in with me, Y/N?” Mark’s eyes were curious, hopeful and his smile grew when he nodded, taking his hand and placing a kiss on his knuckles.
“Markie, I’d love to move in with you. I should start packing now,huh?”
“Heh, yeah - that sounds good.”
Being a singer had a lot of pro’s and con’s which is why you decided that you would be part of a band but in one condition-- you had to cover your face whenever you had to perform live. Why? you were just too embarrassed to show your face and you didn’t have the confidence yet. However being undercover as a singer was a bit harder than you thought. You see, you decided to act like your usual self, thinking nobody would actually hate you or anything as you have always acted like this but you were so wrong.
As you walked over to class 1-A, you felt as if someone was glaring at you or looking at you from the back of your head so you being curious-- decided to look back only to find the person you feared the most. Bakugou Katsuki. You didn’t hate him or anything, it was him who hated you, you didn’t know why and you wanted to ask but he just seemed to hold such hatred for you that-- you just couldn’t. “Get out of the way, you damn nerd.” Bakugou growled, making you jump slightly, you still haven’t gotten used to his well.. Rough voice so you always jump whenever he growled at you. “Oh! I’m um.. Sorry.. I’ll get out of your way.” You stuttered out, walking over to the side to give some way for him, sighing softly as you continued to wonder why he hated you. Facing the door of your classroom, you inhaled before exhaling as you opened the door to your classroom, seeing everyone chatting happily, you closed the door before walking to your seat. Putting all your stuff on your desk, you sat down on your chair, closing your eyes before a notebook was slapped onto your face. “Oi, nerd. stop fucking daydreaming and check my homework.” Bakugou said, eyes rolling as he saw the look on your face. “Um.. okay?” You asked, rubbing your face as you still felt the pain from the notebook. You opened the notebook to find messy hand writing, you rolled your eyes at this before turning the page to his homework. You weren’t excatly smart and you didn’t even know why Bakugou chose you to do his homework when there were so many smarter people than you. “Hurry up already, damn.” Bakugou says, clicking his tongue in impatience. You sigh before getting to work with his homework. “Here, I don’t know if the answers are correct since I’m not even that smart but whatever.” You said, handing him his homework as Bakugou responds with a ‘tch’. “If I get a zero on this, I’m gonna blame you!” Bakugou yells, making some heads turn as your cheeks turn rosy. You nodded quickly before looking down in embarrassment making Bakugou smirk. “Heh. That’s what I like to see, damn nerd.” Bakugou mutters, turning around as you were left there confused at his words and embarrassed at his actions.
Classes were going on and the teacher-- was explaining on and on about music, it actually made you a bit sleepy. Sighing softly as you looked down at your desk before closing your eyes to just relax or so. “So there will be a project which involves two people. The first person will have to play an instrument while the second person will have to sing a song. The choice is up to you on who gets sing and who gets to play.” The teacher says, making your eyes immediately go wide. As a singer, you loved singing but a project that involved singing? with everyone seeing your face? that was just a huge no no!  You internally panicked before realizing-- ‘wait.. You can pick anyways!’ You thought, sighing softly in relief. The person would probably understand anyways, right? “Unfortunately, I’m gonna be the one to pick out your partners as I want everybody to get along and all that. Plus this is a good time for an interaction!” The teacher says, smiling happily while everyone including you, groaned. “So.. I already have the names here, so I’ll start!” The teacher says while you began to pray it was a close friend of yours. Great, thats just fucking great. Everyone was already paired except for you and the person you didn’t even want to be paired with. “The final pair is.. Bakugou and y/n! Please go to your partners and discuss the details. The deadline is next week!” The teacher says before grabbing her things and leaving the classroom. Bakugou turned around, his bright red eyes meeting your nervous one’s. “You’re singing and I’m gonna play the guitar. Got it nerd?” Bakugou said before turning back to face the board. You immediately panicked, tapping on his shoulder quickly-- you did not want this to happen. No way. “The hell do you want?” Bakugou snarled, turning back around to glare at you. “I-- Can’t it be y-you who sings?” You stuttered out, still panicking which made Bakugou raise his brow, slightly curious as to why you were panicking. “You’re doing it and thats final. Practice is at my house later.” Bakugou says, turning around so you wouldn’t see his slightly rosy cheeks. “I-I.. Fine..” You managed to stutter out, panicking even more, realizing that you were probably gonna sing. In front of Bakugou. You sighed, hoping that something magical would happen or just something! but fortunately, nothing happened.
The teacher finally dismissed you-- making you sigh in nervousness as you realized you had to walk home with someone who hated you to death. Fixing up your things before standing up from your desk, feeling someone tap your shoulder rather harshly-- making you look up. “Let’s go. Hurry up you damn extra.” Bakugou says, exiting the classroom with you following him. Walking outside of the school with Bakugou was-- painfully awkward as everything was dead silent. None of you guys talked until you decided to pull out the question you’ve been longing to ask for. “Why do you hate me?” “Huh?” Bakugou asks, his head turning to face you. “Why do you hate me? I’m just curious.” You asked, tilting your head as you stared at him with curious eyes. Bakugou felt his cheeks redden, looking away from your gaze before muttering something under his breath. Your head tilted more as you couldn’t understand what he said. “What was that?” You asked, curiousity laced in your tone. “I said I don’t hate you, dumbass.” Bakugou says before stopping in front of a door-- which was his house. Before you could ask him any more questions, Bakugou opened the door before pushing you a little to harsh. “My parents are out so just go to the living room. I’ll get some snacks.” Bakugou says, rolling his eyes at you. You shrugged ‘maybe it won’t be so bad as I thought?’ You thought silently, walking over to the living room and plopping yourself down to the couch. It was surprisingly comfy and cozy in his house, you sighed happily as you closed your eyes to relaxed. A bag of chips was thrown to your head making you groan loudly as you slightly narrowed your eyes at Bakugou making him smirk. “Don’t just fucking relax dumbass. We gotta practice, now what song?” Bakugou asked, sitting down beside you as he got his guitar ready. It madw you slightly shocked that he even knew how to play the guitar-- you thought he’d break it or something. Honestly, you were still panicking but for some reason, you felt more relaxed. Maybe its cause Bakugou admitted that he didn’t hate you? you really didn’t know but you just blurted out the first song that came to your head. “Best part by her.” You said, humming softly as you remember the lyrics. That was your favorite song and you just loved singing it. “Alright now lets start so I don’t have to see your face already, nerd.” Bakugou says, making himself comfortable as he positioned his guitar. You inhaled softly before readying your voice-- Bakugou looks at you or more like, glares at you before you nod, signaling that you were ready. Bakugou then starts to play out the guitar as you start to sing.
You don’t know babe.
When you hold me~
You kiss me slowly,
its the sweetest thing~
Singing softly as you smiled, you just loved singing so much that whenever you sang, you always smiled. Bakugou stared at you wide eyed, still playing the guitar as he heard your voice-- your voice sounded so familiar, it sounded like-- the lead singer of his favorite group, the lead singer was always hidden so
could it be you?
I Just Wanna See..
I just wanna see how beautiful you are,
you know that i see it.
I know you’re a star
Where you go I follow
No matter how far..
Bakugou still stared at you, wide eyed as he figured it out. You were the lead singer of his favorite band and that thought made Bakugou happy? he didn’t know why. If he were to be honest, he did find you cute as well as your personality but he just didn’t know how to express those feelings so if you were the lead singer, that made Bakugou want to keep you? He didn’t even know how to describe his feelings.
If life is a movie
Oh, you’re the best part, oh~
Finally finishing the song, you looked at Bakugou, who was now staring at you with wide eyes and slightly rosy cheeks. You giggled at this as you knew he had found out but you already knew this would happen so you weren’t excatly shocked. Bakugou snapped out of his thoughts once he heard your giggle, glaring at you with rosy cheeks as he said that one sentence that made your heart beat faster.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing dumbass? sing for me
one more time.”
