Q&A with Kerry Wallach

The author of Traces of a Jewish Artist discusses Rahel Szalit, Szalit's relationship to other Jewish artists of her time, and more.

What made you want to write a book about Rahel Szalit?

I first discovered Rahel Szalit while doing research in Berlin archives. I kept finding her artwork in newspapers from the 1920s, but there wasn’t much information available about the artist herself. Her images enchanted and haunted me, and I couldn’t stop wondering about the person who created them. Like so many who were murdered in the Holocaust, Szalit’s story had never been told at length. I realized that if I didn’t tell her story, no one would.

How did Szalit differ from other women artists of her time?

Rahel Szalit (née Markus; also Szalit-Marcus; 1888–1942) came to Germany as an outsider from Eastern Europe with a working-class background. Many German women artists in the early twentieth century had middle-class backgrounds and were supported financially by their families or husbands. Szalit couldn’t afford enrollment fees for art academies, though she eventually learned painting and lithography. Yet no matter how successful she became, Szalit’s situation always remained precarious. She made ends meet by giving lessons in drawing, painting, and fencing. Probably the biggest difference between Szalit and most of her female contemporaries is that Szalit was relatively successful in Jewish circles, perhaps even more so than in mainstream artists’ circles. Szalit is known for lithographic prints, and it makes sense to compare her with Käthe Kollwitz, who likewise depicted impoverished members of the working class. Around 1927, Szalit became active in the Association of Women Artists in Berlin. Through this group, she exhibited alongside artists including Käthe Kollwitz, Lotte Laserstein, Renée Sintenis, and Milly Steger. Many depicted women as subjects, though only a few (such as Julie Wolfthorn) were known for portraying Jewish subjects.

What did Szalit have in common with other Jewish artists?

Because of her personal connections to Eastern Europe (Lithuania, Poland), Szalit’s work conveyed a sense of authenticity that was in demand. She contributed to the Jewish Renaissance in Germany alongside Jakob Steinhardt and Ludwig Meidner, who—like Szalit—depicted Jewish subjects in an Expressionist style that emphasized distorted, angular shapes and powerful colors. In fact, Szalit was one of only a handful of women mentioned in studies of Jewish art of this period.

What was Szalit's relationship to modern art movements?

Both Expressionism and New Objectivity were important for Szalit’s career in Germany. Whereas many of Szalit’s lithographic illustrations from the early 1920s experiment with an Expressionist style, many of her later paintings and drawings offered realistic portraits of social types more in line with New Objectivity. Additionally, we know Szalit was friends with painter Karl Hofer and other artists in his networks. In 1933, Szalit fled Germany for France, where she became affiliated with the School of Paris. Here she exhibited with Marc Chagall, Eugen Spiro, Emmanuel Mané-Katz, Chana Orloff, and other Jewish artists, including many who hailed from Eastern Europe. Szalit was later included in Hersh Fenster’s Yiddish memorial volume, which commemorated over eighty Jewish artists of France who died in the Holocaust. In the epilogue to my book, I discuss how Szalit—whose life and work spanned several countries and movements—could be claimed and remembered.

This project will be entered in a national Norwegian research competition and will be judged by an academic jury. In contrary to the former survey, this research is specifically aimed at queer individuals who read and/or write fanfiction. Both people who answered and didn’t answer the last survey may answer this one.

summer 2022 academic update:

i didn't want to have to take a summer course, even less did i want to take a 4-week course, but i'm happy to be enrolled in the sociology of sexualities during pride month.

i officially begin tomorrow, and the most difficult part i foresee is not having anyone to study with. no accountability besides myself. this is the first proper online class i've taken, and with my array of mental ailments, they aren't my first (or second) choice.

studying with people motivates me, but no one else i know is enrolled in a summer course, so maybe i'll find a new place to study that strokes my inner academic.

"Sit still.." *Abby would groan placing her thick fingers on your hips, nudging you down into her hips. "You can't sit on my lap anymore if you keep moving peach, 'tis too distracting.." Abby would rub her nose and temples annoyed, not at you fully of course but the way you kept moving against her hips alone.

-This was probably your 4th time shifting on Abby's lap in just these past 10 minutes.

"Oh c'mon...you're hard to sit on when you study over the desk ..can't we just go lay down..? Get comfy..?"

"How the hell will I study when I'm laying down y/n." She was upset, something she never was with you.

"wh-"

"Please.. just- go sit down..I'll join you in a bit? Please let me study baby girl." Abby asked with a sigh.

As much as it hurt you, you still obliged to her command and sat down on the couch in her room. Of course you couldn't focus without being next to Abby, it made you nervous. Just sitting away from her made you anxious, that's when everything was louder and 10x intensified. The urge to bite your nails, sweat, click your tongue, crack knuckles, whatever you could fidget with was much more impulsive than usual.

Right as you decided to check your phone's time or mindlessly scroll online, it died. of course... time to do that fucking walk of shame up to Abby (who was now upset with you) and ask her if you can play piano tiles, candy crush or whatever games she let you download on her phone.

Getting up from the couch your bunny slippers shuffled across her mahogany floors with that airy "pfft" sound when the ears flipped up with each step.

"A-Abby..?" Fuck.. of course your voice was falling out. You got so nervous when Abby acted like this, which rarely happens.

Abby's office chair didn't move, instead Abby just replied short.

"Hm? what do you need."

"Can.. can I borrow your phone.. for- for games...?"

As much as Abby wanted to be angry at everything your stammering made her laugh.

"Such an Ipad kid..sure sure.." She sighed again, giving you mixed signals.

Abby handed you her Iphone, Abby had those clear cases with a little polaroid of you and her on the back encased by the plastic.

You smiled softly and ran off back to the couch bundling up under the blankets. Your fingers tapping at the screen and small sounds or music emitted from under the blankets. "Sweet!" "Tasty.." "Delicious."

As much as you were lost in Abby's screen you didn't even notice her calling your name...

"Y/n? Honey turn it down." "Y/n please, I need to finish studying.."

It was too late once you did hear her though, Abby was already on her feet marching to your place on the couch. She had pulled the blanket off of your head and gave you a small annoyed hand gesture.

"You gonna turn it down or do I have to take it from you?"

Embarrassment flushed out your cheeks into a bright red. How could you not hear her..?? You felt so stupid.

"I-I'm sorry Abs.. I- I'll turn it down.. I-.." Why were you stuttering now..? You felt so weak and little as Abby stood over you.

Abby could notice your mind rattling as you overthought the whole situation growing frustrated.

"Hey..Hey it's okay..i didn't mean to hurt your feelings love.. I'm so sorry." Abby frowned and held out her arms to you for a big hug.

With slight hesitation you still accepted Abby's hug and stuffed your face deep into her shoulders, the smell of her pine soap and hair washes filled your nose as you hugged her tightly.

"I'm almost done. Can you wait another 10 minutes?" Abby reassured you she would cuddle and chill with you as much as you wanted after. "Alright. I'm right here okay? Just wait a few." How was Abby so good at making you feel better. ughhhhhhhhh

After hearing Abby's keyboard click and her pencil dragging over her notebook for what seemed like forever, she finally got out of her office chair and looked at you with the warmest smile ever.

Abby walked over to you and draped the blanket over the two of you.

“I’m sorry Y/N. Movie night..?”

Fuck yes.?!?! Movie nights with Abby were the best. But then she hit the..

“I picked last time- what do you want to watch Pumpkin?”

God..you wanted to pick your favorite ofcourse..The muppets. (100% best movies…) but..you felt so bad for pestering her while studying so you put one of her favorite boring War movies on.

“Really..? You want to watch that..?”

Abby was kinda shocked you picked one of her favorites,but how you described it was..

“The Micheal Bay Film with the guns..and war-“

Abby put it on and kissed your forehead pulling you into her to cuddles.

“C’mon..I’m sorry about earlier..I love you..yknow that.?”

You nod and smile softly just emerging into her warmth and into the blankets because you just needed to sleep everything off,so did Abby.

“I love you princess..”

“I love you too…Abby..”

Hi, I'm a second year psychology student doing research on how queer people view others within the LGBTQ+ community.

Its just a short task and survey that should take 5-10minutes to complete, any participation is appreciated! Thank you!

Extra clarrification on some things under the cut :)

In this study we use the words "(gender) conforming" to mean anyone thats not part of the LGBTQ+ community and "(gender)non-conforming" for anyone that is. This was suggested to help us code the results better, but we now know that this may have overcomplicated things.

The first part of the study involves an IAT, for some people they will be put into the "positive, conforming" conditioin first and others will be the "positive, nonconforming" first. It may seem scewed, and some people have bought up that it can seem bias, but that is just how this type of test works- it has been used and tested in many other studies and has not shown internal bias.

These are the main two points people have bought up, feel free to ask any other questions about this research though I will be happy to try and answer as much as I can :)

I’m loving being (I think) the sole 3rd year in my advanced undergrad / graduate queer theory class (also baby sibling vibes).

⚠️PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT⚠️

The Queer Liberation Library is, as the name suggests, a digital library centered around queer literature. They offer library cards to anyone in any place, all you need in order to sign up is an email address. Then you can access their catalog online or through apps like Libby.

When I signed up I received an email that said there’s sometimes a waitlist, but I should have my card within a week or else someone would get back to me within that timeframe to explain if I had to wait longer. I ended up getting my card after only a couple of days.

Their website is very accessible and easy to use. My favorite features are the button at the bottom of the screen which lets you switch between light and dark mode, and the Quick Exit banner along the top of the page that doesn’t go away regardless of where you navigate on the site.

This is such an incredible resource and I can’t believe I didn’t know about it until very recently. I want every queer person to know about it! They have accounts on most of the major social media sites (such as tiktok, Instagram, even here on tumblr at @queerliblib). There’s also a place on their website where you can suggest books they should add to their catalog.

After you get your card, I’d suggest the first book you read to be Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menon. It is a short but powerful little book that I think is an incredibly concise analysis of societal gender-based discrimination, and a great place to start a lot of really important discussions. I listened to the audiobook this morning (it was only an hour long, which is a win for my trash attention span) and I couldn’t believe how good it was for so little page time.

I will absolutely be reading the rest of the Pocket Change Collective (the series which Beyond the Gender Binary is part of) and I can’t wait to see what I’ll learn from them.
