I don't know if I've ever mentioned this before, but Venera's name actually means venus. which, while not seeming overtly necessary information at first glance, actually is something I was losing my mind over yesterday because. the three brightest objects in the sky, in order, are the sun, the moon, and venus.

I was on the road for about six hours yesterday for what should have been a three hour trip, with some serious issues underneath the hood of my car and the beginning of a shift my boss refused to give to someone else to keep me on edge. So when I arrived about an hour and a half late to said shift I was exhausted from the long drive and windswept and out of breath from the frantic bike ride from the parking lot in a nearby village to my workplace is the city centre, which turned out to be the ideal combination to deal with a coworker's first attempt at misgendering me: while I was rushing to get the close back on schedule, he approached me and asked me if, considering he "only ever sees a she" when looking at me, the rumours were right and I "call [my]self a he". I was so out of sorts that I just looked at him blankly from my position restocking the bar for about twenty seconds before saying that I don't, but the state does. What I meant to say was that I don't call myself by any third person pronouns, because I'm not in the habit of talking about myself in that way. He/him is solely for others to use. That might be a little too vague for my A2-level Dutch colleague to grasp easily after a horribly busy and understaffed shift, however, so I decided against saying that... After a good ten hours of sleep, however, I'm not sure whether my answer of "Well, the state considers and calls me a he" was that much better.

Ah, well, it doesn't really matter as long as he calls me a dude to my face. I'm not quite dumb enough to think the others respect my identity when they're talking their mix of Iranian/Afghan dialects at work- as my name does stand out amid their language, and apparently the information on my identity was shared internally by the one colleague who asked me when it was just us two on shift, so all I'm asking from them is just to attempt to be civil to my face. Idc about their personal opinions.

Ura and the digital archives of the past in "Pale Cocoon"

Ura looks over records of the past at his desk at the beginning of the OVA

This OVA peaked by interest when I read a review by THEM Anime Reviews about it, which noted that it focuses on a person named URA who is "mining digital archives of the distant past for information," finding in archival images a "long-gone world of green grass and animals and clouds and oceans" and his co-worker, Riko, often distracted, while he becomes "increasingly obsessed with trying to decipher a strange and disturbing record."

Reprinted from my Wading Through the Cultural Stacks WordPress blog. Originally published on Aug. 27, 2021.

So, the episode begins with Ura climbing stairs in a facility and him saying that "the archives we know of as history ended at some point." Wee then see him looking over records from the past, leafing through a book, which is a way to communicate his supervisor, noting that he is looking through a visual record of some type from 2000 C.E. He agrees to send the record onward, through the bureaucracy, while secretly making a copy of the record himself, among others he is collecting. Basically, he is forming his own collection of records! As soon has is about to look at the next record, an audiovisual record, there is an air raid siren. He then talks about "wreckage of archives" scattered across the world, which contain "fragments of the former world," saying he is evacuating archives because it is "the only way to understand the past." He later tells Riko he is "obsessed" with evacuation/processing of records because of the archives. He tells about about a record he found and says to himself that through archives people were able to understand the reality of the present, with people only able to live on a part of the world.

Later, Riko and Ura look at the record he saw the day before, which he partially restored. Riko says that books are a "medium for passing on archives" and they wonder whether the place shown in the video is an archival data storage facility or not. As she walks out, not interested at first, she recounts how all sorts of people use to work there, but now they are the only ones working there. He becomes dedicated to figuring out what this record is really saying, slowing deciphering it. His supervisor notes that Riko is planning on leaving and discusses with him about the value of archives, then says this:

That can't be good! Ura says they have already been confirmed as fact, in response, and his supervisor says he wishes sometimes that they were all lies. Ura and Rika discuss the past and where people live in this world shaped by environmental modifications. When Ura says that looking through the archives can help change the world, Rika tells him it is "better not to understand," since humans destroyed the world in the past, saying she doesn't want to lose any more hope in reality. She goes as far as to say that archives shouldn't have been "dug up" (processed and brought in) in the first place. Later, Ura is back looking at records about population growth affecting the earth's environment (not sure why they couldn't have just said "climate change"), saying that perhaps he wanted to immerse himself in archives to avoid reality. The last parts of the OVA are spent of Ura using clues from the audiovisual record, which I think is a music video, to find out something about the past, speeding on an elevator up into the sky. Rika is shown coming to his work cubicle and doesn't find him there, later seeing a video which tells her more about the past. The OVA ends with Uta looking at what appears to be the Earth, meaning they are on the Moon (I think?)

Anyway, there were some interesting archives themes in this, better than other anime like Little Witch Academia and Mystic Archives of Dantalian, both of which confused libraries and archives, to give two examples. It appears that Ura is doing some level of archival processing, which is "preparing archival materials for use," although he is clearly not engaging in arranging, description, or analysis. Even so, he may be described as an archaeologist, but he seems like an archivist to some extent, albeit a strange one, as does his colleague, Rika.

I wish this was a longer series where they could explore the archives more, but I would say I was relatively satisfied with this on the whole. I don't know if its the best representation of archives, and archivists, but it is definitely a different one from anything I've seen recently and definitely more positive than the archives in Phineas and Ferb, Fluidium, and Meau that I've written about recently.

LANGUAGE BARRIER !

summary: them with a bilingual-partner & their kids

ー# CHOSO didn't know just how big of a mistake he made letting his little girl learn an extra language. at first, he didn't think it'd be a big deal. his two year old learning your native language? that was an amazing idea - he loved it. the importance of maintaining your culture's language and spreading it through family made him think he was completing an aspiration he never knew he wanted. that was, until his you and his little angel decided to take things to the next level - insults. you taught her insults. and he didn't know it until he ended up upsetting her at the dinner table, and she blurted something incredibly disrespectful in your native language.

your jaw was on the floor. and choso was, rightfully so, incredibly confused. "what'd she just say?" he asks, genuinely confused about what she just told him. you begin laughing, scolding your little girl. "honey, you can't say that to daddy! that's bad." choso looks at her concerned. "what'd you say?" she crosses her arms, sticking her tongue out at him. he sighs, looking at you. "what'd she say?" collecting yourself, you sigh and whisper it to him, watching as his face contorts to complete shock. "that is so rude!"

ー# GOJO loved the idea. i mean, think about it? his little girl, stomping around, arguing with you in your language, and lowkey winning? he thought it was hilarious! of course, until she gets old enough to truly say something hurtful, but that'll be a while. or, at least, that's what he thought.

your daughter pouts, sitting in the middle of the living room floor, back facing you. she's six now, and far sassier than anything on plant earth. meanwhile, gojo is simply getting a snack bar from the kitchen. though, when you least expect it, she yells at you to shut up in your native language. your eyes go wide as you begin to slip off your sandal, walking toward her in spite of her screams. gojo wraps his arms around your torso, yelling 'calm down' and 'it's okay', having to catch your sandal when you attempt to throw it at her. your daughter approaches, just far back enough to not get caught by you, and apologizes formally before leaving to hide in her room. and now, gojo has to deal with you cursing at him. which is all fine, of course, except.. its somehow worse than you cursing at him in English?

ー# NANAMI thought it to be an interesting experience. he was the one to convince you that, no, it wasn't going to confuse him, and no, he wouldn't be upset if his daughter spoke to him in the language. because, unbeknownst to you, he's learning the language. ever since you were maybe six months pregnant? he wanted it to be a surprise for the little ones birthday. and that, it was.

you smiled, answering one of your daughters many questions for the day while nanami sat at the picnic table outside. today marks her fourth birthday, and she was ecstatic. she never really understood the significance of birthdays until recently, when nanami's been explaining to her how exciting they tend to be. "daddy! daddy! today's my birthday!" she exclaims, grinning ear to ear. "and ー and mommy made me my cake! and i helped!" she says, happily pointing to the cake, basically jumping off the ground and to the moon. nanami smiled at his daughter's excitement. "i see, darling. did you put the candles on it, too?" he asks, stifling a laugh at the slightly messy placement of the candles on top. she nods and grins. "you did a great job, darling." he praises, kissing her cheek. she asks you a question in your language, asking if it was time to cut the cake yet. before you could respond, nanami shakes his head, telling her she has to wait to light the candles first. your eyes go wide, while your daughter simply nods with acceptance. "since when did you-?" you ask, generally confused. nanami smiles. "i've been learning for some years now."

Quick Notes:

This is when both reader/you and Alastor are both alive. (... we'll probably end up in hell later on btw so stay tuned...)

Reader is an artist/painter.

Part 2:

Every day and night you had to stay trapped at home, it felt like nails on a chalkboard after that one fateful meeting that night.

The only thing that made the time bearable was the radio. Alastor told you he hosted a radio show. As so, you soon became one of his most loyal listeners. Anything to relive the moment when you felt like a person again.

So when the night finally came, that you could escape to Mimzy's establishment the next town over, you were over the moon at the chance to see Alastor again.

Luckily for you, your husband was going to be away for a week this time.

That night, you made it to the bar a bit later than usual, you had to be extra sure that it was safe to leave town unnoticed after a close call of almost being discovered by some relatives that lived nearby.

When you enter the bar, you hear some piano music. It wasn't unusual for Mimzy to invite musicians or let patrons play some music at the piano that resides in the bar, as long as they didn't get boo'ed off the stage. But this music stirred something in your soul, making you hurry into the bar.

It was Alastor.

You gasp, your heart beating a million miles a minute. You were so drawn to him. In this moment, the jazzy music that filled the air and filled up all the holes in your heart. You were captivated. So captivated, that you forgo greeting Mimzy and the bar entirely, in favor of walking over to Alastor at the piano.

He gives you a surprised look before smiling and immersing himself in the music once more.

You smile back and you can't help but sing along to Alastor's piano playing. The song was a classic, and also one your personal favorites.

As you sing, you sit down on the piano bench next to him. You notice he doesn't open his eyes, but the smile on his face deepens as your duet continues.

When your song comes to an end, it feels like you came back down to earth. The bar erupted in applause, the embarrassment flushing your whole face pink. You look over to Alastor who's looking at you with such a warm expression.

"My dear, what a lovely voice you have. Your talents truly seem boundless. I am quite surprised you knew that song."

You spend the rest of the night tucked away in a private corner talking with Alastor about all sorts of things, interests, likes, dislikes, deep conversations about life, and even your fears. But never once did you mention your home life, you'd rather die than let Alastor find out. The last thing you need is for him to treat you differently.

When you mention you listened to his every show ever since the night that you first met, his eyes light up and something in him clicked.
