Eddie stumbles into his queer awakening because he starts obsessing over why none of the girls Steve hooks up with actually want to date him. Eddie doesn’t even know what "perfect boyfriend material" is, but he knows it’s Steve.
Steve is confident but not full of himself like Eddie once thought. He’s romance novel level protective. Girls love that shit right? And he surprisingly has a goofy side, a sassy one too, and it’s all wrapped in charm that makes it work.
Sometimes Eddie even feels like Steve is flirting with him… Smiling at him when he comes to the video store, leaning over the counter close to him, looking at his lips even when he’s not talking.
It flusters Eddie, makes his heart beat funny and puts a strange warmth in his stomach. The way he imagines any girl in Steve’s beamer feels when he kisses her while some radio love song plays, but Eddie assumes Steve has that effect on everyone. Right? Eddie doesn’t get a lot of attention like that, he can never tell when he has a crush or he’s just happy a girl gave him a look that wasn’t annoyed.
Then once, Eddie’s renting a movie and Steve asks to join him later, but he frames it like he’s asking Eddie on a date, giving Eddie that look that makes his stomach flutter and Eddie just can’t take it anymore.
Eddie blurts out, “I don’t get it, man. How do you not have a girlfriend? You’d be so easy to fall in love with. Hell, I feel like you've made me fall halfway in love with you already. If I was a girl, I’d date the shit out of you.”
It hits him all at once as soon as it leaves his mouth.
Oh.

The nurse gives him a warm blanket to wrap around himself while he waits for someone to read his scan.  Eddie falls into a light doze and is woken several times by the orthopedist and then again by the nurse and neurosurgeon telling him that he’s cleared to leave sometime around five AM local time.
Each time he wakes, he reaches for Buck only to see the rigid line of his back through the tiny slit window in the door. Buck is never looking back at him, and Eddie knows he’s got his work cut out for him to knock whatever bullshit Buck’s been telling himself about Eddie being taken is his fault out of Buck’s thick skull.
But first, Eddie needs Buck to willingly be in the same room as him.
Danny Williams shows up at the time that Eddie is handed his discharge papers. Buck has disappeared in search of a wheelchair despite Eddie’s protests that he can walk out of the hospital. Eddie is irritable, hasn’t slept in what feels like ages, and wants a real shower.
“Danny Williams—I’m a lieutenant with 5-0, which I’m sure you know.”
“I have heard of you,” Eddie admits as he shakes Danny’s hand. “Any chance you can get me a shower so I don’t smell like roadkill left out in the heat for two days?”
“Sorry, no can do. We need everything on you for evidence and then pictures.”
“For trial?”
“Yes. Assuming we go that route,” Danny mutters the last part, but he hands Eddie a set of hospital scrubs and allows Eddie to change in private, leaving his clothes, including his boots, in a large paper bag. He won’t wear his boots without socks, and Danny has provided a set of flip-flops that are the right size.
“We’ll get you some regular clothes after the CSIs have their pictures, and you can use the showers at our headquarters. You signed the release, letting us use your records for the case?”
“Yeah. Where’s Buck? Did he have to go to LA for that wheelchair I don’t need?”
Danny snorts and smothers his laughter, ice-blue eyes dancing. “You give him a run for his money, don’t you?”
“I guess?”
Danny waves off Eddie’s confusion. “He saw me coming and hightailed it somewhere. He’ll be back once he’s talked himself into something possibly macho but extremely bullshit about you getting hurt.”
“It wasn’t his fault,” Eddie repeats yet again, scowling at Danny.
“That’s the attitude. Keep repeating it until he believes it. The kid is too much like Steve and needs to have his little brood session before you knock him straight. He was terrified for you, so let him have it now.”
“Okay…?”
“I’m sure you don’t need my lecture on the care and feeding of your Seal?”
“I know how to take care of Buck,” Eddie firmly states. He doesn’t need to be told anything to care for Buck as long as they’re talking to each other. If Buck keeps hiding from him, he might take an assist from Kono if she’s available, but he doesn’t know Danny, and McGarrett will probably be on Buck’s side in things and be unhelpful if he needs to pin his partner down.
“Again, I’m sure you do. Just remember he’s a bit tender about you being kidnapped.”
“How could I forget,” Eddie says, pointing to the bruising on his face. It didn’t hurt since he was given some Tylenol and ice, but it was pretty spectacular looking in the glance he’d gotten in a mirror.
Buck picks then to reappear with a wheelchair, and he pales at Eddie pointing to his bruises.
“Buck,” Eddie calls, stopping him from disappearing again. He may play it up a bit how stiff he feels when he stands and hobbles to the wheelchair, making Buck hover. Give Eddie a few hours in the sun, a shower, and a nap, and Eddie will be good as new and ready to sit on Buck if necessary to make him listen to what Eddie has to say.
“Let’s get the show on the road. The sooner we get your photo shoot done, the quicker we let you shower,” Danny reminds him as Buck pushes him out of the ER.

2. The Steve Henderson AU i might actually finish who knows anything could happen (written wip)
3. Season 3 Dustin Custom Funko Pop Keychain (physical wip)
4. Chrissy Cunningham Custom Funko Pop (physical wip)
5. Måneskin Battle Jacket (physical wip)
SNIPPET
its the Steve Henderson AU babeyyyyy
i feel the need to clarify that im outlining this bad boy right now and making event timelines and highlighting reoccurring themes and shit so the prose is Not Good. This ones an elaboration of a sticky note i wrote before bed one night, reformatted for readability because its literally just a block of text in the document gdskfjadaljfha
(listed right after “Season 2’s very long demodog-fighting tunnel-scampering day”)
STICKY NOTE: “Scene with Claudia and Dustin addressing Dustin lying in season 2, Mews, and their relationship. Probably before [the] hospital [scene]. Started about him disappearing all afternoon [and] segue[s] to Steve helping him and then to helping Steve because he has no one right now.”
Wanting to make sure to add this scene because Dustin's relationship with Claudia is just as if not more important right now than Steve's relationship. This is adding a reasonable and implied scene from canon and using it to establish and expand Dustin and Claudia's relationship by having this confrontation about him lying to her and all these things he's not telling her.
This establishes Claudia's need to know what's going on and how persistent she is with it, which will end up pushing Dustin away to Steve for more than just upside down stuff because of how casual Steve is about everything (like crushes and shit as we see in the train tracks scene in season 2).
Also Dustin's lie in the show is kinda shit anyway like he says he'll stay home and then runs off the whole afternoon??
They're also gonna have to address Mew’s death and Dustin's gonna give a half-truth (maybe Steve gives it since the show can't decide if Dustin is a good liar or not. Or its a cover story decided beforehand? We’ll figure out specifics later) about some rabid dog killing Mews and Dustin hiding it because he didn't know how to explain it without hurt his mother’s feelings and how he got Steve to help track the dog down so it wouldn’t hurt anybody else.
And from here Dustin talks about how cool Steve is and how he got hurt helping him and the party and how he wants to be there for him too (cause Steve is in the hospital for the concussion right now). Maybe Claudia picks up on the wholesome admiration and that's why she gives in or maybe she just agrees to take Dustin to visit him and seeing and meeting Steve makes her decide to take him in. probably a mix of both. Might have to be Dustin's pov if Steves not there but maybe it'll work out so where Steves there for part of it and the rest is implied afterwards at the hospital and days that follow (again we’ll figure it out later)
real quick tagging @loser-jpg @nymime and @elmoshipsbyler absolutely no pressure ofc🕺🪩💃

Mike’s Playlist Analysis: Part 2 (The Holy Shit Songs)
1: “When Love Breaks Down” by Prefab Sprout, Thomas Dolby
Aaaaaand even just reading, my spidey-sense went berserk. Mike has not been canonically confirmed to be in love with Will (although we all know it), so this could not possibly be about him. I’m fact, the only relationship, romantic or platonic or familial that Mike has on the show that puts such an emphasis on the word “love” is his relationship with El. So I had a feeling this might be about them, but I expected it to be slightly vague. And then I heard the lyrics. And then my head exploded.
“My love and I, we work well together/But often we're apart/Absence makes the heart lose weight, yeah/Till love breaks down, love breaks down”—Hmmm…since Mike has been deemed the heart this season, I latched onto the line with that word. “The heart [losing] weight” implies that this is on Mike’s end (of course, since this is his playlist), which leads to the next line—love breaking down. “Losing weight” to me implies that gradual loss of love. Damn. Not trying to be subtle, are we?
“When love breaks down/The things you do/To stop the truth from hurting you”—Damn. Dayum. Isn’t this what we’ve all been saying? Mike is defensive and evasive—we’ve seen that come out a lot over the past few seasons, and it’s always been a part of his character. He’s security-oriented, initially opposed to new things. He’s afraid of instability—and his relationship with El provides him with that stability. He doesn’t want to accept that maybe their relationship is not what’s best for him or her. Because maybe that would force him to accept another truth about himself…wink wink. He’s desperate to hold onto his relationship with El—not only because it provides him with that stability, but because he is afraid of losing her for good if he breaks up with her (they have been through too much together for that to happen, but it’s a valid fear). He doesn’t want to accept the fact that their romantic love and relationship are breaking down. He doesn’t want to accept the fact that he and El are fundamentally incompatible. He doesn’t want to accept the truth. Oh yeah. The math is mathing.
“When love breaks down/The lies we tell/They only serve to fool ourselves”—Oh come on. Oh come on. Do I even need to explain???? The monologue. “You never say it.” “I say it.” Yet more evidence of Mike’s evasiveness. Mike is trying to fool himself, hide from the truth and lie his way to security. We’ll see how well this works in S5…
2: “Don’t You Want Me” by The Human League
Okay, so I was hearing a lot about this song when everyone in the Byler tag was freaking out because they changed the version of the song on Mike’s playlist (the “gay pride” album cover to the original one). People seemed to lose hope, or say that the reason they changed the versions was to make the gay implications of the song less obvious. And I kind of agree with the second point. But what a lot of people seem to be dancing around is the fact that this song is on Steve’s playlist as well. Bylers noticed this long ago, but I haven’t seen anyone share their opinion on why Mike and Steve have the same song on their playlists (correct me if someone has; I just personally haven’t read any analyses on this). But after listening to the song and analyzing the lyrics, I think I’ve finally managed to articulate my take on why this is. Let’s look at the lyrics:
“You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar/When I met you/I picked you out, I shook you up/And turned you around/Turned you into someone new/Now five years later on you've got the world at your feet/Success has been so easy for you/But don't forget it's me who put you where you are now/And I can put you back down too”—Okay, so some of these lyrics are a bit more bitter than I’d like, but I think this is El from Mike’s POV. This is him directly acknowledging that she doesn’t need him anymore—not in the way she did in S1 when she was acclimating to the world outside the lab. She’s a different person than she was, and she’s growing and developing into a healthier, more independent person. I don’t think Mike is this bitter—if anything, from him speaking to Will in the van scene, I’d say he’s more afraid of El not needing him anymore than bitter about it. But the point still stands.
“Don't. Don't you want me?/You know I can't believe it when I hear that you won't see me/Don't. Don't you want me?/You know I don't believe you when you say that you don't need me”—Again, I don’t think the bitterness lines up completely, but I think these lyrics raise the question of “want” versus “need.” The lyrics state that, although the narrator seems sure that the person still needs them (if we’re going to line this up with Mike, I’d call it denial), they don’t know if this person wants them. I think that’s a very important distinction to make here, that difference between needing someone and wanting someone.
“It's much too late to find/When you think you've changed your mind/You'd better change it back or we will both be sorry”—I think this is definitely foreshadowing a Mordor breakup, with El initiating it. She’s going to put her foot down, but Mike’s not going to want to take it, especially after that monologue. He’s going to try to hang on a bit more, but I think El will remain firm (her strength when it comes to letting things that are hurting her go has been showcased in S4 when she leaves Brenner).
“I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar/That much is true/But even then I knew I'd find a much better place/Either with or without you/The five years we have had have been such good at times/I still love you/But now I think it's time I lived my life on my own/I guess it's just what I must do”—I think this is from El’s point of view and goddamn…this is so healthy. This is giving “amicable El-initiated breakup” vibes and I am LOVING it. She is acknowledging their history and their love for each other but saying that being in a romantic relationship is just not good for her. 100% my favorite verse in this song. LOVE IT.
…And as for why this song is on both Mike’s and Steve’s playlists. I saw a lot of people panicking and not as much recently, but for those of you who are still worried about this—don’t be. Yes, I think them changing the album cover of this song on the playlist was to make it less obvious. But when all is said and done, looking at the lyrics, this song has nothing to do with Mike’s sexuality (although I do think it’s a nice added bonus that it’s on so many gay pride playlists). This song is about people who have been together discovering that being in a romantic relationship with one another isn’t the best thing for them. One of them might try to save the relationship out of fear or desperation or a lack of stability in their life. But when I think of this song, I think the main message is “I love you. And we’ve had a good go of it. But I think we need to do what’s best for both of us and let this go so we can both move on.” And that’s why I think this is on Steve’s playlist. I wholeheartedly believe that Steve fell back on pursuing Nancy due to feeling lost in life. Season 3, he was pursuing Robin—but that didn’t end up working out romantically. And Steve does love Nancy—how that love has evolved over time is something that requires more analysis. And I really do believe that Nancy loves Steve—even if it’s never been romantic. But in the end, in my humble opinion, they simply aren’t compatible. Every time Steve was talking about his “six nuggets house with white picket fence” dreams, it was the writers trying to tell us that they aren’t compatible. Nancy is ambitious and won’t let anything stand in the way of her dreams. She’s seen how the end-of-the-cul-de-sac life has negatively impacted her mother, and she doesn’t want that for herself—even though Steve is obviously a much better person than Ted. Again, I don’t doubt that Nancy and Steve love each other. But they need different things in life, and I hope S5 will acknowledge that. And you see this reflected in Mike and El too—they love each other and care about each other deeply, but we’ve been shown again and again that they don’t work romantically. And I hope that one of the messages of S5 will be “it’s okay if it doesn’t work out romantically—that doesn’t automatically destroy your love.”
3: “Mad World” by Tears for Fears
*Trigger warning: mentions of suicide and poor mental health*
This song being on Mike’s playlist…genuinely concerns me. I know we’ve analyzed Mike’s behavior throughout the series and figured out that he shows symptoms of poor mental health, but this song really hammers that down for me. Let’s check out the lyrics (buckle up folks):
“All around me are familiar faces/Worn out places, worn out faces/Bright and early for the daily races/Going nowhere, going nowhere”—Nancy is the only one of the Wheeler kids who has outwardly acknowledged her parents’ problems and her problems with this “nuclear family” image. Mike hasn’t acknowledged it vocally or shown any indication that he understands what’s going on in his family. But this verse makes me think that he is very much aware of it—or at least he will be very soon. It calls attention to the monotony of this kind of life, and I think this might be brought up as one of Mike’s fears in S5. We know that Nancy doesn’t want this life, and I don’t think Mike does either. Maybe one of his fears that will be focused on in S5 will be repeating his parents’ mistakes and getting trapped in that life. I mean, we’ve all seen how Mike and Ted wear similar clothing…wow, this is loud.
“Their tears are filling up their glasses/No expression, no expression/Hide my head, I wanna drown my sorrow/No tomorrow, no tomorrow”—Damn, that’s…bleak. This is definitely referencing Mike’s home life, how there is that emotional distance and coldness and how everyone has up walls. This is really hammering down the whole “Mike is well practiced in hiding his feelings” message. We only get his true thoughts and emotions when he’s with Will (and even then, we’re not getting the full picture). We (or at least the general audience) have no clue what the fuck is going on in this guy’s head since S2–because S2 was really the last time we got a huge chunk of the show in his perspective. When it’s written from the perspective of someone else? We get zip. He’s literally been bottling up his feelings for two seasons—likely much longer. An emotional breakdown is in order…we’ll see if S5 does this justice.
“And I find it kind of funny/I find it kind of sad/The dreams in which I'm dying/Are the best I've ever had/I find it hard to tell you/I find it hard to take/When people run in circles it's a very, very/Mad world, mad world”—Whoa whoa whoa. See, this is why this song being on his playlist scared the living hell out of me. These lines have a crazy amount of suicidal implications. We know at this point that Mike feels useless when he’s not needed. He wants to be the protector. He wants to be needed. He at once has an inferiority complex and a savior complex. And that makes him way too willing to die. You see that especially when he jumps off a cliff into literal certain death (before El saves him) to save Dustin. And that scares me. We already know that his probability of being Vecna’d next season is crazy fucking high. If Vecna uses this inferiority complex against Mike…oh god, that’ll be hard to watch.
“Children waiting for the day they feel good/Happy birthday, happy birthday/And I feel the way that every child should/Sit and listen, sit and listen”—Yet another nod to the monotony of societal norms. The way kids are supposed to suck it up and “grow up”—to be appeasing to adults in order to get the happiness they deserve. There are a couple of songs in this playlist that are nods to Mike not wanting to grow up; to stay a kid. In another one of these song analyses, I mentioned how that confirms that Mike was projecting in that rain fight (“we’re not kids anymore.” “It’s not my fault you don’t like girls”).
“Went to school and I was very nervous/No one knew me, no one knew me/Hello, teacher! Tell me, what's my lesson?/Look right through me, look right through me”—I listened to this song a couple of weeks ago, before I started analyzing this playlist. I already knew it was on Mike’s playlist, but I didn’t start really paying attention until these lyrics popped up. Because it reminded me a lot of the shed scene in S2. To me, the first two lines seem to be a reference to Will and their meeting on the swings. “Look right through me?” Hmmm, it almost sounds like you’re hiding something…And this is maybe a nod to the fact that Mike and Will just know each other that well. Complicated feelings and miscommunication in S3-4 aside, Mike can always tell when Will is hurting or needs help. And Will always knows that he can go to Mike for help and Mike won’t treat him differently. Damn, it’s all coming together…
4: “Telephone Operator” by Pete Shelley
Bro, all this time we’ve been talking about how Mike was actually trying to call Will in California but couldn’t get through because the line was always busy and nobody brought up the fact that this song is literally on Mike’s playlist? This song basically confirms that y’all were right???!?!? Lyrics, go!
“Telephone operator/Why can't I see you later/Telephone operator/Why can't I see you later/Tell me is it wine/That makes things so fine/Or is it 'cos you're mine”—ROMANTIC AS SHIT! And we know how Mike couldn’t possibly have been using the phone to call El, since the government was tracking the phones and she’s supposed to be in hiding. He never once mentions calling her—he hasn’t called her since S3, and in that phone call, he lied to her about Nana being dead. No, instead we get the fight between Will and Mike about Mike not calling. Not El. Will. THIS SONG IS ABOUT WILL!
“Telephone operator/You're my aural stimulator/Telephone operator/Ne c'est pas la raison d'etre/Tell me is it love/That I feel because/You're all I'm thinking of”—Again: THIS IS HELLA ROMANTIC! Joyce having a new telemarketing job. “Mike won’t stop whining about it.” THE MATH IS MATHING.
“Telephone operator/Phone you up an hour later/Telephone operator/Phoned you up an hour later/Tell me is it love/That I'm in because/I'm only thinking of you”—BOOM! Confirms that Mike was in fact trying to repeatedly call will only to have to line blocked. Can’t even believe this is on Mike’s playlist. Duffers are insane for this.
5: Machine Age Voodoo” by Spk
Y’all, Mike is getting so Vecna’d next season you don’t even know. Observe:
“Put your shoulder to the wheel/Use your muscle, nerves of steel/Strike it hot, make a hit/Beat the livin' out of it”—I’m thinking giant battle against Vecna S5! Mike’s gonna be in the final battle, y’all. This will be absolutely epic and I can’t wait 😜
“Feel the power in your soul/Feel the rhythm in your bones/Raise the pulse are you ready/To let your body go”—Whoa there pal…you had me up until “let your body go.” Could that mean what I think it does? Could this hint at Mike getting Vecna’d, I wonder?
“Feel the magic of the dance/Let your mind slip in a trance/Everybody everybody get together/In ritual celebration”—Hehehehehe WHAT. Damn, Duffers, don’t be too blatant or anything…A mention of the mind slipping into a trance? Trance? TRANCE? Oh yeah. Mike is getting so hella Vecna’d next season it’s not even funny. If he doesn’t, after this song, after the buildup of us not knowing what the fresh fuck is going on in that boy’s head for over two seasons, I will be confused. I will be genuinely baffled.
“Feel the power in your soul/Feel the rhythm in your bones/Raise the pulse are you ready/To let your body go”—I wonder if this could hint to Mike hearing music (“rhythm in your bones”) and pulling on inner strength to fight off the trance (“feel the power in your soul”). Might be far-fetched, but I’m also wondering if “raising the pulse” could be another heart reference (if Mike is the heart here). Another hint to him getting out alive? I hope so…
6: “Every Day is Halloween” by Ministry
Okay, so I was initially very happy that we got not one, but two references to Halloween on Mike’s playlist. My guess is that it’s his favorite holiday, but the Byler implications…*cough crazy together cough.* That was before I looked at the lyrics—and goddamn, the implications run way deeper than just Halloween…
“'Cause to me everyday is Halloween/I have given up hiding and started to fight/I have started to fight”—Hmmm, a lot of songs on this playlist have mentioned “stop hiding/running away”and “face the truth.” And fight against what, one might ask? Societal pressures and norms? Internalized homophobia? Who’s to say…
“Oh, why can't I live a life for me?/Why should I take the abuse that's served/Why can't they see they're just like me/It's the same, it's the same in the whole wide world”—Wow, that’s…incredibly queercoded, right? I’m not the only one seeing this? Not only the queercoding, but also the “why can’t I live a life for me” line. I mentioned (when I talked about “Mad World”) that I think Mike either is or will become aware of the effects of social pressures and norms on his family, and he is afraid of falling into that trap. This line makes me think of “It’s My Life,” another song on Mike’s playlist. The lyrics kind of stumped me, but the title tells its own story.
“Well, I let their teeny minds think/That they're dealing with someone who is over the brink/And I dress this way just to keep them at bay/'Cause Halloween is everyday, hey”—I wonder if the intention of including this song was using Halloween as a metaphor for a weapon against widespread homophobia. I feel like D&D has kind of become this metaphor as well—not necessarily just against homophobia, but the whole party uses the game as a fantastical escape from the prejudices of the outside world. Also, Mike Wheeler self-acceptance arc WHEN???
“I'm not the one that's so absurd/(Why can't I live a life for me? Oh) Why hide it? Why fight it?/(No! Why should I?) Hurt feelings, best to stop feeling hurt/From denials (oh), reprisals/It's the same, it's the same in the whole wide world”—Again…hella queercoded. “Why hide it?” “Denials?” “Best to stop feeling hurt?” Definitely a nod to Mike having those emotional walls up. Wow. Just…this song. On his playlist. The guts. No more words for this. Just my applause.
7: “Make No Mistake” by Psyche
I hope y’all were looking for more proof that Mike is going to have an emotional breakdown next season, because you’ve got it. This song is also another big chunk of evidence suggesting that Mike gets Vecna’d in S5.
“Got to drop the pressure/Get on the right train/Forget the payback system/That ain’t no way to gain”—This is making me think that Mike will learn to let go of societal pressures in S5 and realize that trying to conform will not get him anywhere. Hmmm, “getting on the right train” making me think that he will end up going in the right direction, and it’s also another nod to the “running away” motif…
“Feeling out of sorts/Don’t want to let it end/I feel like I’m overloading/You got me down on my knees/I want to pull the trigger/But I can’t find the release”—Oh hell yeah, this is giving extreme “Mike Wheeler Emotional Breakdown” vibes and I’m absolutely LOVING it. I can’t believe this is actually on his playlist; y’all have been saying this for MONTHS! I notice the use of second person here (“you got me down on my knees”) and of course my biased Byler ass is going to assume it’s about Will—but don’t worry, I have proof this time. Wait until the end to find out…
“You’d better stay out of sight”—This reminds me of both Max hiding behind a gravestone in the Vecna trance in the cemetery and Will hiding from the Demogorgon (or possibly Vecna) in the UD in S1. Again the use of second person (presumably Will) making me think that this might have something to do with Vecna and Mike wanting to keep this person safe.
“When they’re knocking on your door/Look around the corner/They’re rotten to the core”—I’m thinking this is about Vecna (because of the previous verse), but it could also easily be a metaphor for heteronormativity and societal homophobia.
“Waiting in the dark/Nowhere to hide/Try to hold your hands/The fear at its side”—This kind of reminds me of the cabin scene and Mike reaching out to Will’s light from his patch of darkness. If that scene is foreshadowing (which we all strongly suspect it is), what are the implications for S5? I think this is alluding to Mike getting Vecna’d and reaching out for Will, especially with the “nowhere to hide” and “the fear at its side” lines.
“Feel it coming your way now/Riding in the light/Ain’t no escape”—Oooooh, I see another reference to light. “Riding in the light” sounding like Max’s “hiding in the light…” Will being bathed in sunlight during his heart-to-hearts with Mike…
Tumblr media
I mean, if I’m being honest, this analysis could have gone in Part 1, if it weren’t for “Breakdown” by Tom Petty being on Will’s playlist. If the title alone wasn’t enough to make you do a double-take, observe the lyrics:
“It's alright if you love me/It's alright if you don't/I'm not afraid of you running away/Honey, I get the feeling, you won't”
“There is no sense in pretending/Your eyes give you away/Something inside you is feeling like I do/We've said all there is to say”
“Baby/Breakdown, go ahead, give it to me/Breakdown, honey take me through the night/Breakdown, now I'm standing here, can you see?/Breakdown, it's alright”
I’m sorry…WHAT THE FUCK? This is NOT giving “sad gay boy in love with his straight best friend trope” vibes. Fuck no. This is giving “beautiful requited love” vibes!!! And again I say, damn, spoil the entirety of S5 why dontcha? This song matches too well with the song on Mike’s playlist—don’t try and tell me that wasn’t intentional! Duffers are lowkey crazy for this.
8: “Smalltown Boy” by Bronski Beat
Don’t even need to explain ❤️ 🏳️‍🌈
(But if you’re new to the tag and haven’t been exposed to this song feel free to ask!)

Choices - Part 1
Tumblr media
Word Count: 3,913
Requested: by me; inspired by a TikTok POV
Story Description: After the snap (Y/N) and Steve decided to shift their friendship into a romantic relationship. After the Battle of Earth, and Thanos’s ultimate defeat, Steve had to travel back in time to return the stones, but what (Y/N) doesn’t know is he’s not returning. The man leaves to his best friend the hard task to break the news to his lover. But what will happen if Steve returns in an unexpected manner?
Pairings: Steve Rogers x Reader, Bucky Barnes x Reader
Part: 1/3
A/N: I just gotta say I only have spoiled knowledge of what happens in Endgame because I refuse to acknowledge its existence and I’ll never watch it. Anything I write that is not cannon, whoops. But this one-shot is inspired by a POV I stumbled upon in TikTok and I just needed to write. Had to divide it into two parts because it was getting too long.

                                                        ***
It had taken 6 years and losing almost everyone we loved for Steve and me to admit our feelings for each other. After seeing our closest friends dissipate into fine dust we decided life was too short to wait for the right time.
That was 5 years ago. Our relationship had been solidified as the years went on and the loss of Nat and Tony in the Battle of Earth only bringing us closer.
But something had changed. These past few days Steve had grown distant and quiet, only acknowledging me when we were in our bedroom or stuck in training. All I could attribute it to was that he was nervous about traveling to return the stones. Normally, he would talk to me about what was clouding his mind but nowadays he was acting as if we were strangers.
Thankfully, I had a friend to occupy my time with. Bucky and I had developed a close friendship since meeting him back when he still was the Winter Soldier. Being part of his recovery was the catalyst to the relationship we have today. Losing him in the blip was horribly heartbreaking but it brought me and Steve closer. Now that he was back, I was able to have someone I could confide in the understood the Captain’s brain.
“Hey, Buck,” I announced my arrival as I saw Bucky getting some water in the kitchen. “Couldn’t sleep?”
“Not really,” he sighed. “The nightmares, you know?”
He was right, I did know. Although I wasn’t blipped I had my own demons I was still battling with. “Yeah, I get it. I’m making grilled cheese, do you want some?”
“Grilled cheese? At 3 am?” He chuckled. “What’s wrong?”
“What do you mean?”
“Come on, (Y/N). You only eat grilled cheese at this time when you’re worried about something.”
“You know me too well,” I sighed. “It’s Steve. He’s been really weird this past few days.”
“Weird how?”
“He’s been kinda avoiding me lately and I don’t know why.” A few tears were threatening to spill, but I did my best to dry them before they fell. “It’s like nothing I do is good enough, like he’d rather be anywhere but close to me. Does he hate me? Is it something I did?”
Bucky got up from the chair he was sat in and wrapped me in a hug. I couldn’t hold off the tears this time. “There’s nothing you could do that would make that man hate you, he’s probably just in his head about traveling in time.”
“I thought so, but why wouldn’t he talk to me about it. There’s not a single thing we haven’t been able to talk about up to ‘til now. What’s so important about this that he can’t talk to me about it.”
“Don’t stress yourself over this, doll. I’m sure after tomorrow everything would go back to how it was.”
Bucky’s POV
And at that time I did believe it. Knowing Steve I really thought he was just nervous about the journey he had to take in the morning. That was until he said he needed to talk with me.
“What is it, punk? You too nervous?” I chuckled until I saw the serious face he held.
“I need a favor from you, Buck, and you might not like it.”
“You’re scaring me, Steve. What’s wrong?” I couldn’t help but think that this had to do with why he was avoiding (Y/N).
“When I go back today, I’m not coming back in 5 seconds.”
“What are you talking about, Steve?”
“I’m going to stay back and have a life with Peggy. This is my last chance to be with her and I’m taking it,” he ran his hands through his face. He knew what he was asking of me and he knew it wasn’t fair. “I need you to tell (Y/N) for me once I’m gone. She’s gonna need someone to lean on and I need it to be you.”
“You can’t do that, Rogers. It’s not fair to me and it’s definitely not fair to her. (Y/N) loves you with her whole being. This is going to crush her.” He had been ignoring her out of guilt and he was leaving all these feelings behind in a couple of hours, leaving me to deal with the aftermath. “You know, she’s been beating herself over you avoiding her and I thought it was just nerves. But this is a new low; the Steve I know would never do this.”
“Bucky, I’m sorry. I just think it’ll go over quicker if it comes from you.”
“What you’re doing is cleaning your hands of a mess you’re making.” The anger was boiling inside of me by now. (Y/N) did not deserve this ending, she did not deserve to have her heart broken in such a cowardly way.
“Please, Bucky. I don’t think I could tell her face to face.” He took a paper out of his back pocket. “I wrote her this letter, hopefully, it’ll help things to smooth over. Please, Buck, please. You have to believe me when I tell you the last thing I want to do is hurt her.”
I snatched the letter from his hands and guarded it in my jacket pocket. “I’ll do it only because I owe you my life and she’ll need someone once I break her heart for you. But, I get it.”
“Thanks, bud. I know that for now, it must seem like a horrible thing to do but hopefully in time you’ll see my point of view.” I accepted the hug he offered. Although my head was telling me to be loyal to Steve, my heart was breaking at the thought of breaking (Y/N)’s.
Before I knew it, Sam, Bruce, (Y/N), Steve, and I were standing in front of the machine that would be the catalyst of inevitable heartbreak.
3rd person’s POV
“Well, this is it,” Steve whispered. They were standing to the right as Banner made sure everything was ready for Steve’s trip.
“You know, it’s not too late to back out,” (Y/N)’s hands traveled to his chest. “We can have someone else go.”
“It has to be me, (Y/N). But I’ll be back before you know it, doll.” His head lowered and left a deep kiss on her lips. They lingered for longer than usual, and she couldn’t help but imagine that there was an underlying message to it. “You know I love you, right? And I would never do anything to purposely hurt you, right?”
“Of course, Steve. I love you, too.” (Y/N) smiled and kissed him once more, allowing him to engulf her in a tight hug. “Be careful, okay? I can’t lose you too.”
“I will,” he smiled. “Now, I’ve gotta go.”
“I know, be safe.” She smiled once more as she watched Steve get on the machine. She made her way over to Bucky, his arm circling her shoulders. “It’s just 5 seconds, right?”
“Yup,” he smiled, ignoring the burning sensation coming from the paper inside his jacket. “Just five seconds.”
“Ready, Cap?” asked Bruce from behind the control panel. Steve nodded, one hand on Mjolnir and another on the case that held the Infinity Stones. “Alright, we’ll meet you back here, okay?”
“You bet,” he responded. Two of the people present knew that it was a lie, but no one else had picked up on it yet. His head was encircled by the helmet and he stared at the two people that meant the most to him in this lifetime. Hurting them was the hardest thing he had to do, but he had been living for everyone else for too long. He decided that it was time to do something for himself.
“Going quantum in 3, 2, 1,” Bruce announced. A breath hitched in (Y/N)’s throat as the time went down, all she had to do was brace herself for five seconds. Banner hit the button and (Y/N) had to blink various times to fully grasp the disappearance of the man she loved. He had vanished as quick as a thought, one second there and the next just a memory. “And returning in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1....”
Nothing. Bruce clicked the button and nothing happened. The body of Captain America was nowhere in sight.
“Bruce, what the hell is going on?” (Y/N) spoke up, but she wasn’t sure if her voice was heard. Her mind raced a million miles an hour and she could feel her legs giving out. Had it not been for Bucky’s left arm, she would have crashed to the floor. Bruce stammered with his words, not knowing what to say. “Bucky, where is he, Bucky? Where’s Steve?”
Bucky knew it would hurt to see her cry, but this was shattering his heart. Her body was falling limp in his arms and the tears were streaming out of her eyes faster than he could dry them. Her words were slurred but he understood the gist of it. She was hurt; she was betrayed; she was beyond heartbroken.
“Come on, let’s sit down.” Bucky led her to the tent that was propped up behind them. “There’s something you should know.”
“What is it, Buck?” She sobbed.
“Please don’t hate me, but Steve is not coming back.” The girl looked up at her friend, not know what emotion she was feeling in the moment. Her tears stopped momentarily, needing to hear the words that would spill from Bucky’s mouth. “Steve decided to go back in time and have a life with Peggy. He needed you to know that he didn’t want to hurt you. He also left you this note.”
Her shaky hands extended to take hold of the piece of paper Bucky handed her. She dried away the tears that were clouding her eyes and began reading.
My dearest doll,
If you are reading this letter, you know I am not coming back. I decided to take hold of the chance to have the life I would’ve had if I stayed in the 40s. I can’t imagine how you’re feeling in this moment, and I’m sorry for all the hurt I know I’m causing you. I need you to know that I never knew I could love someone after Peggy and I’m thankful for all the years we had together. I was in love with you and I still am, but I could not continue on knowing I have a chance to answer one of my biggest ‘what if’s. I could not go on in our life with the weight of my past on our shoulders, you deserve better than that. I hope you can pardon how big of a coward I am being in the moment, I knew I couldn’t do this face-to-face and you deserve at least a worded explanation of why I left. You are strong, amazing, beautiful, and deserving of all the love in the world; I’m sorry I couldn’t provide it. I want you to promise me that you’ll move on and be happy, even if it’s not with me. I also hope you don’t hate Bucky for being the bearer of bad news, he didn’t know until today and I gave him no other choice thant to tell you. If there’s someone that can understand what you are feeling right now, it is him.
I hope one day you will forgive me for this,
I love you until the end of the line.
Steve
She folded the paper back up and broke down once again. Bucky engulfed her in a hug and held her as she shook. “He’s gone, Buck. He went back to be with Peggy. I wasn’t enough for him.”
“Oh, doll, I’m so sorry.”
“Guys, we’ve got to head back,” Sam peeked his head through the tent, heartbroken by the view in front of him. “I’ve got her, Buck. Go get the truck started.”
Bucky released (Y/N) into the arms of Sam Wilson, and left to start the car to head back to the tower. Sam ran his hands over the sobbing girl’s hair trying his best to soothe her. Even though he didn’t fully understand the situation she was in, he got the jist of it. After everything was packed back up, (Y/N) had fallen asleep in Sam’s arms, so he picked her up and laid her on his lap to not wake her. She would be needing all the rest she could get.
“You guys good back there?” Bucky asked.
“Yeah, she’s out like a light,” Sam whispered.
“Good, she’s gonna need all the energy she can get to recover.”
“What happened?”
“Steve decided to stay back and be with Peggy; left me to tell her the news.” Busky gripped the steering wheel until his knuckles were pale white, his anger building up inside him.
“Wow, I never expected that from the Cap. I don’t think it’ll be easy for her to move on from this.” He looked down at the sleeping figure in his lap, wiping away the few tears that had slipped out in her slumber. “She might be physically strong, but she’s very sensitive and rarely gets attached.”
“I still don’t understand why he chose to do it this way. The little punk.”
The duo waited until Banner was inside the truck before leaving the spot they were in and back home. Unbeknownst to them, behind the trees, a figure stared at the scene in front of him with a broken heart.
                                                           ***
It had been almost three weeks of robotic movements from (Y/N). She would wake up, sometimes eat, sit in front of a window and stare down the New York skyline; other times she would lay in bed wearing one of Steve’s shirts and sprayed the room with his cologne as she sobbed into his pillow. There were the nights that she drowned her sorrows in a bottle of whatever liquor she could find, until the other members started hiding the bottles. But that didn’t stop her from stashing a couple of bottles in her closet. Nighttime was always the hardest. (Y/N) had grown used to falling asleep in Steve’s arms and being engulfed in his warmth. Now, she thrashed around in a bed that was too big, too cold, and too uncomfortable.
The rest of the team had tried their best to lift her spirits, but nothing seemed to work too well. Sam tried his best to make her favorite meals, which she gave thanks for but rarely ate, pushing the food around in the plate; Bucky tried to entice some emotion by asking her to join him in clearing his list of movies to watch to catch up on the times, but she would zone out for most of the movie; Bruce would ask her to join him in his afternoon reading sessions, but every time she picked up a book she re-read the same page over and over not retaining a single word; Wanda would try her best to get her to partake in normal hygiene practices, which the girl had held off on for a couple of days, only getting her to shower every other day.
(Y/N) was a walking zombie, doing the bare minimum to survive.
But today she had woken up differently, her heart hurting a little less than the other days. She got into the shower, brushed her teeth, and even got dressed in her own clothes. It was three in the afternoon, but she was up. She was detangling her hair when her bedroom door opened.
“You’re awake?” Bucky said, startled to see a clean and awake (Y/N) in front of him. “Don’t mean to sound so surprised, but I came in here with the intention to startle you awake once again.”
The girl chuckled and continued her brushing. “Thought it was time to do something by myself.”
“Here, let me.” Bucky took the brush from her hands and started brushing through her damp hair. It finally smelled of her normal shampoo and conditioner, and not a mix of her hair oils and Steve’s cologne. The smell of strawberries and vanilla emanated from her head and Bucky couldn’t help but breathe in deep. His left hand ran the hairbrush through her hair as his right hand smoothed it down. (Y/N) leaned into his touch and smiled at the comforting strokes he was providing. Unknowingly, Bucky started humming a lullaby under his breath.
“What are you humming?”
“It’s a Russian lullaby I overheard one night while under HYDRAs hold. There’s not much I like to remember from those times, but this I don’t mind.”
“I like it,” she rocked to the movements of his hands and smiled as she listened intently to his humming. She couldn’t see him, but the veteran was smiling at her. It had been the first time she had shown any kind of emotion in the time that had elapsed. He finished her hair in a sloppy braid, not fully understanding the mechanics of the three-strand braid. “Thank you, Buck.”
“How’re you feeling today, (Y/N)?” He finally asked.
“I’m feeling better, don’t know how long it will take to get me to 100% but I’m feeling like a 45% today.”
“That’s good to hear, you know. It’s better than where we started.” He wrapped his arms around her from behind and she leaned into him, enjoying the warmth his body emanated. “So, what do you want to do today?”
“Have not gotten up to that point.”
“Well, Sam’s already cooking up something in the kitchen and I’m on the second movie of The Lord of the Rings, so we can watch that one.”
“Okay, that sounds good.” She smiled at the man that was next to her as they exited her room.
The rest of the team had gathered in the kitchen, working on ways to cheer (Y/N) up when they saw her emerge from the hallway with a small smile on her face. Everyone’s jaw fell open when they saw the girl looking partly human and with a spark of energy. It had been a while since she had resembled the (Y/N) they knew and loved.
“Guys, please pick up your mouths off the floor, your eyes do not deceive you.” (Y/N) joked.
“Glad to see you’re alive, (Y/N),” Sam spoke. “Come have some food.”
She smiled at her friend and sat next to Wanda as Sam placed a plate of chocolate chip pancakes in front of her. Bucky served himself and her a cup of coffee and added the cream and sugar she enjoyed with her drink. She happily munched on the food as the people around her stared in astonishment.
Thankfully, the staring didn’t last long. Wanda and Sam had a quick recon mission and Bruce had some work to finish in the lab, leaving Bucky and (Y/N) to enjoy The Two Towers in peace. Bucky had the curtains drawn and the movie all set up as (Y/N) took out blankets and made a hole between all the pillows that adorned the couch. The duo settled into their spot and bundled themselves in the blankets, settling in for the 226 minutes of the extended version of the movie.
She wasn’t sure at what point in the movie she fell asleep, but she was woken up by Bucky softly shaking her awake. She mumbled something she didn’t even understand, so Bucky decided to carry her to her bed. (Y/N) had burned too much energy by being around too many people too fast. It didn’t seem like a lot but being around the whole team had taken a toll on her. The sun had started to set and so were the last slivers of happiness she had felt.
Bucky set her down on her bed, tucking the blankets around her. He turned to leave when a small hand wrapped around his right wrist. He looked down and saw a teary-eyed (Y/N) looking up at him.
“Stay, please.” Her voice was barely a whisper and it trembled slightly. She was the vision of the heartbreaking scene that had hurt him three weeks ago.
He smiled softly at the girl and went around the bed to climb in. “Today was hard, huh?”
“Yeah, I thought I was ready to go back to normal, but it took too much out of me. I feel so useless.”
“You are far from useless, doll. You’re hurting, darling, we all understand.” He pulled her in close and laid her head on his chest, the thin layer becoming wet with her tears. “It’ll get better someday, that’s the only thing I’m sure of.”
“How do you know?”
“Because we all do, after a while we all get better.”
“I wish we knew how long a while was. Everything would be easier.”
“I know, doll, but let’s take it all one day at a time. Just remember you’re not alone. You have me – and the rest of the team.” He cleared his throat trying to disguise the importance she held in his life. Bucky would have never said anything, but he had fallen for the girl. He held her already in high regard for the care she had given to his best friend, but his feelings had started to shift when she started caring for him while they were on the run.
“Thank you, Buck. I don’t know where I would be without you.” She laid a kiss on his chest and drifted to sleep with Bucky’s arm rubbing circles on her back.
One more week had gone by and (Y/N) had grown used to having Bucky sleep with her at night. He had helped her pack away all the things Steve had left in the room – specifically the cologne that still hunted her, – he started waking her up earlier and making sure she got at least two full meals a days before she went to bed, and he made sure that she didn’t spend her nights crying for a man he called his best friend.
All of Bucky’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed. The remaining Avengers had noticed how the ex-assassin cared for the broken girl, going further than the rest of them did. And his feelings for the girl did not fly by the mind-reading witch that currently stared at him preparing lunch for (Y/N).
“When will you tell her how you feel?” The redhead spoke, casually sipping on a cup of coffee.
“What do you mean, Wanda?”
“What she means is that you’ve been in love with that girl for far too long and it’s time you confess already,” Sam jeered. “Nothing’s stopping you now.”
“Except for the fact that she’s still reeling from my best friend breaking her heart by going back in time and leaving her to be with someone else. I’m sure she’ll be jumping with joy if I confess right now,” he mocked. “Anyways, how did you know?”
“You’re not very secretive about it,’’ Sam laughed. “You’re always in a sour mood but magically when you’re with her you become someone else. The White Wolf become (Y/N)’s puppy real quick!’’
“I am not that obvious with it.”
“Okay, lil’ pup.”
“Whatever. Anyways, it’s not the right time for that.”
“When will it be the right time then, Bucky?” Wanda inquired.
“I don’t know. But it’s not right now.”  He plated what he was cooking and headed to (Y/N)’s room. The last thing she needed at the moment was a new relationship, even if that’s all Bucky wanted.

In Hiding Part 6
Author’s Announcement: Hey guys! I really appreciate all of the recent feedback and the patience. My life has been pretty hectic these last few weeks, so as a reward for your patience, this is the longest part yet, and I’m really proud of it! I hope you all enjoy it!
P.S. Doctors scare me so sorry if the “medical” part of the story is shitty.
Word count: 2567
Warnings: mentions of blood, bodily harm, non-consensual medical treatment, reader is StRaNgLeD, tiny OCD routine, slight language, non-descriptive violence, and grammatical/spelling errors.
The Avengers were everything you hated. They were destructive, they took whatever they wanted without a thought about anyone else, and they loved behind a façade. You’d seen who The Avengers truly were; they were menacing, inhumane, and lacked empathy. They could’ve just left you alone; you weren’t hurting anyone. You may have been doing some illegal things, but they were minor offenses! You’d never killed, and you were against terrorism of any kind. You just wanted to go home, wanted to be left alone. Your freedom had been stripped away after you’d made your final decision. You wouldn’t fight with The Avengers; you’d do everything in your power to get away from them.
You looked up from the floor of your cell, into the eyes of Steve and Bucky, and you could tell they knew what was coming next. You were stronger than them; you could easily overpower them. They’d seen it earlier when you grabbed their wrists, and every second you sat in that godforsaken cell, you became more immune to the effect of the material blocking your powers around you.
You intimidated them, and you knew it. You knew that your time in this compound was running out, and soon you’d be free. Free. Free. Free. Free. You repeated the phrase in your head five times to lock it in.
You felt that you were ready to share your decision. “I’d never fight for you people, never. Never. Never! NEVER! NEVER!! You people are killers; you take everything for yourselves! You’ve destroyed cities, taken the lives of so many innocents. How can you live with yourselves?” You yelled. Your eyes had begun glowing, and your hair was lifted off of your head as your volume increased. “How?!” You questioned, your eyes shining brighter.
Steve and Bucky were backing into corners of your room, staring down at you. A blue aura began to form around you, illuminating the room in a vibrate blue. Your crossed legs began to levitate off of the ground, and a strong wind began to sweep through the room in a circular motion.
You didn’t want to fight, this trick took all of your energy, and the two super soldiers were helpless, so you decided this would be the perfect time to escape.
As soon as you turned to the wall farthest from the room, which you hoped would lead outside, a particularly strong wave of fatigue hit you. The wind and your aura began to dim, but Steve and Bucky knew not to lunge at you yet.
A string of mumbled curses fell from your mouth, and you let your feet descend onto the ground. This might conserve your energy so you could put more into escaping this wretched complex.
Being back on the ground and looking less powerful, Steve decided to go for it. He jumped forwards and wrapped his arms around you, pressing you into him; you could only wiggle your hands.
Lifting you off the ground, he tried to make it so you couldn’t use your feet as any leverage.
“Fucking dick!” You yelled, thrashing in his arms.
“Language!” He yelled.
You’d had enough of his bullshit and began thrashing more. His grip only tightened, but you were still stronger. There was a vent located right above you, so you flew out of his arms.
You tucked your legs into your chest after he tried to reach out for them and stretched your arms, reaching for the vent. You swiftly pulled it off its hinges and forced yourself into the circulation system.
The tunnels weren’t dissimilar to a maze, you tried to go in one direction, but after 20 or so corners, you have turned around. The alarms blaring throughout the compound, warning everyone of your escape, were bringing about an awful migraine, and you were becoming more and more fatigued by the minute. You wouldn’t stop, though.
You had heard a few voices in the tunnels with you, as well as footsteps. You made sure to avoid them, and after 10 minutes of wandering through the ventilation, you found an air vent to the outside. You pushed hard, and with the last bit of strength you had left, the vent became dislodged. You tumbled out and plummeted about two stories before hiding the ground with a painful ‘thud.’
You crumpled into a ball on the grass, and you felt blood trickle down your forehead. You could also no longer feel your right foot, meaning it was broken. Everything hurt, but your ribs were also a very obviously damaged part of your body. Every time you moved, you felt a shooting pain.
You slowly sat up and wiped the blood from your face, and the amount of blood on your hand was startling. You looked around other parts of your body to assess the damage and found that your knees and elbows were also bloodied, as well as a few scrapes here and there. You lifter up your blue scrubs to get a better look at your side, where a wide purple and blue patch was starting to form. Hesitantly, you placed two fingers on your side, looking for anything broken. The shooting pain was the response, and you pulled your hand away. It was most likely broken, as was your right ankle. It was also a swelling purple and blue mess, and the pain was begging to hit.
You let your eyes fall away from your body to look at your surroundings. You were greeted by vast green forest on all sides, and behind you stood The Avengers compound. It loomed over you, and you could still hear the alarms blaring from the inside. You struggled to get up, and, to no avail, did you.
So, you lay on the ground, your tribulation had failed, and you were doomed once more. You tucked yourself into a ball and cried.
‘How could you be so weak?’ You thought to yourself. ‘How could you let people like the Avengers-like HYDRA-control you like this?’
It would be best if you found somewhere to hide, and quickly. You wouldn’t let The Avengers control you anymore. You couldn't.
You pushed yourself up, so you were on your hands and knees, but you were weak, and I’m so much agony. You kept pressing on, though. You crawled your way to the forest and let yourself fall behind a tree. You must’ve hit a tripwire or a perimeter alert, as a new set of sirens went off and an automated voice yelled your location. You cursed, but you couldn’t go on much longer. With your injuries and your temporary inability to shift, you had to surrender.
—————Avenger POV—————
“We’ve got a location!” Tony yelled through the team's comms. “Kid’s headed East, and it looks like she’s stopped behind a set of trees. I can see her on cams.”
“Who should we send out there? You saw what she did to Steve and Bucky.” Implored Natasha.
“She looks pretty tired. We could probably take her if we needed to, but I don’t think a fight is in store.” Bucky advised.
“How about we all just go out there?” Steve added sarcastically.
“Oh yeah. Good idea, capsicle.” Tony agreed. “Everyone grab your things and meet me in the common room; we’ll all go out and surround her. Bucky, Steve, you go from the East. Natasha and Clint, you guys, take the North. Strange got here a few hours ago, so he and I will take the West. Loki, you’re just going to ignore me, so Thor, go with him and make sure he doesn’t do anything rash. And Bruce? You stay inside; we don’t want a code green, big guy.”
‘Okay’s and ‘mhm’s sounded through the Comms, and three minutes later, everyone was gathered in the common room, looking at one another surreptitiously, not knowing what would greet them on the other side of the doors. They didn’t know whether or not you’d be putting up a fight, but they were about to find out.
“We’re all here? Let’s go then.” Tony commanded. His suit's helmet fell over his face, and he strode forward, everyone else in close pursuit.
—————Your POV—————
You were weaving in and out of consciousness, and you still lay crumpled on the ground in your ball. You felt weak, and you couldn’t think straight. The world was a spinning vortex, and you almost thought you heard voices and feet. You opened your eyes and were met with the face of Tony once more.
SNAP! SNAP! In your face again, but with metal fingers instead of flesh. Tony likes snapping, it seems. You, however, did not. You attempted to growl to ward him off, but you couldn’t produce any kind of sound.
You turned your head slightly to face the rest of the team. They towered over you, weapons drawn and aimed at your face. Typically, you wouldn’t fear them, but in your fragile state, they were pretty threatening.
This wasn't very pleasant. You, one of the most powerful enhanced humans ever, were lying on the ground, bloodied and broken, at the will of The Avengers. They stared down at you, pity written all over their faces. Pity, not a feeling you wanted to be affiliated with.
Two metal arms reached out and wrapped around you, hoisting you up. A sudden rush of adrenaline caused your limbs to begin thrashing about, and the pain from your ankle and ribs subsided. Your sudden movement caused the metal arms encasing your body to pull you closer to the body they attached to. You felt the metal chest and put two and two together. You were in the mostly impenetrable arms of the Iron Man.
Tony picked you up carefully and began walking back into the compound, and the team followed suit. You tried to summon the adrenaline once more, but it didn’t want to come.
Feeling completely vulnerable, you decided to surrender. Yes, it was the cowards’ way out, but did you have another option? Your body was giving up on you, you couldn’t use your powers, and your opponents happened to be the killers of Thanos, another very powerful being.
There was no hope, so you just closed your eyes and allowed the sleep that had been creeping up on you to take over. Your vision faded into black, and the last thing you remembered was the mechanical hum of the Iron Man's suit.
——————————
You awoke to quiet chatter, and a beeping machine you could only assume was a pulse monitor.
As soon as your eyes fluttered open, your senses were flooded with a bright white and the smell of rubbing alcohol.
You looked up from your supine position to find yourself strapped to a table once more, but stronger and additional restraints were added this time. You still felt weak, and your side and ankle were aching, as well as your head.
An IV was embedded in your forearm, and as your eyes traveled the length of the tube up to the bag supplying it, you found it contained a thick blue substance. It must’ve been combating your powers because you couldn’t shift.
You took in your surroundings and found various members of The Avengers watching you. Creepy.
“Welcome back to the land of the living (Y/N).” Chuckled Tony, “You gave us quite a scare.”
The rest of the team went silent, and Bruce, dressed in a white lab coat, whipped around to face you and ran to your bedside. He whipped out a flashlight and shoved it in your face, his fingers following to hold your eye open while the flashlight shined in.
“Pupils are dilating, so no concussion.” He hummed, moving to your other eye.
He moved to pull a stethoscope from his neck and pressed the bell to your chest. You bit your tongue to stop from yelling out when the cold metal touched your bare skin. You must’ve bitten it when you fell because you sensed a metallic taste in your mouth. Bruce was in spitting distance, so you let the blood and saliva pool in your mouth, and you prepared to launch it towards him.
As soon as he lifted his head, you released your spit bomb. Bruce recoiled and began incessantly wiping his face with gloved hands. A hand flew around your neck, preventing you from spitting again.
Blood dribbled down your chin, and you looked up to the face the hand belonged to. It happened to be the winter soldier, and you grinned up at him, blood coating your teeth. He stared you down, and you did the same. The rest of the team just stood by, wearing “What The Fuck Just Happened” expressions.
Bucky finally released your neck, and Banner walked back over, blood-free and with duct tape.
“Shouldn’t have done that.” Tony mocked from behind Bruce as he and Bucky taped your mouth shut.
You tried to shake him off, but your movements were no use. Barnes had a firm grip on your head that prevented you from thrashing about, and Bruce was wrapping your face.
‘Duct tape is the best they can do?’ You thought to yourself. ‘Do they know that duct tape loses its stick when wet?’
You laughed to yourself, and Bruce and Bucky ceased their actions and looked up at you, as did the rest of the team.
“What’re you laughing about?” Bucky snarled.
You only shook your head and rolled your eyes. If they didn’t know, why tell them?
Banner ripped the tape and stepped back. Bucky released your head, and you stared up at the ceiling, hoping they’d all leave.
“The rest of you can go. Bucky, you stay here. I need help controlling her.”
“You got it, Banner.”
The rest of the team reluctantly left, leaving you, Bucky, and Bruce. You looked over to them and stared them down with undeniable murderous intent.
“So, uh, what’re we doing next?” Bucky turned to Bruce, who was still staring you down.
Bruce snapped out of his trance and looked over to Bucky. “She’s still got some injuries from her fall; I need to check those out. Do you have any medical training?”
Bucky nodded. “A little bit, from when I served. Just basic stuff.”
“We can work with that.” Bruce crossed his arms and walked in the direction of your injured ankle.
You tried to get away, but the power suppressors and restraints prevented you from doing anything, so you just wriggled around uselessly.
Banner pressed two fingers to your swollen and bruised ankle, and you bit your tongue to stifle a muffled scream. He moved his fingers to another part of your ankle, and you hit your head against the table to suppress another outcry.
“Bucky, can you grab some Ace bandage? I think the Talus is fractured. We’ll need an X-Ray to make sure, but I doubt she’ll cooperate.”
“I can make her, or we could try sedation.” Bucky offered.
Bruce seemed to rather like that idea, as his brows raised, and he procured a metal syringe.
Forcing it into your arm, you let out a muffled, yet surprised yelp. Immediately after the syringe was removed from your arm, your world began to darken, and you became dizzy.
You tried and failed to resist, but your body gave in, and the last thing you saw was Bucky and Bruce watching you.
To be continued…

Steve POV
“The 911 operator I was talking to had this great idea to use the hose to pull the little girl across the water to get her out of the pool,” Steve reminisced, sitting at the big island in the kitchen watching Sam cook.
“Dude, I was there, remember,” Sam replied.  “And hasn’t it been like a week since that happened?”
“Yeah, but it was such a clever idea. I didn’t even know they could see the whole house on their monitors.”
“Who cares! It’s probably some fancy technology not available on the market yet, but if I'm hearing this correctly, it sounds like she popped Stevie’s dispatcher cherry,” Bucky joked behind him.
Steve peeked over his shoulder, narrowing his eyes at Bucky. “My what cherry?”
“You know when you talk to a dispatcher on the phone while on scene. Danvers takes those calls most of the time, but every once in a blue moon, one of us takes it.” Bucky wiggled his eyebrows. “Who was the operator?”
“Um...YN.”
“Oh, my sister,” Thor announced in a deep voice, patting him on the shoulder and taking the stool next to him. “She is very intelligent.”
“Wait, you have a sister?” Steve asked, widening his eyes at him.
“I have two sisters, while one half-sister, but we don’t talk about her because she’s the worst,” Thor answered with pursed lips. “YN is the best though, I like to think she got the brains, I got the brawn, and well, I guess, that makes Loki the beaut of the family.” He nodded with a half shrug.
“Are we still talking about how Rogers popped his dispatcher cherry,” Carol smirked, walking into the kitchen with Valkyrie. Steve felt his face heat up as he tried to say something, but she held her hand up. “It’s okay! Everyone remembers their first time,” She winked, forcing him to shake his head.
“Okay, okay. I get it.” Steve held up his hands in surrender, trying to hide the blush on his face.
_____________
You swiveled back and forth in your chair, waiting for the next call to come in. You had a half-hour left of your twelve-hour shift, and you needed a girls' night out. Living with your brother and Darryl was both a blessing and a curse. They offered you a place to stay, rent-free when you first moved here, but the amount of testosterone in that house was sometimes too much for you to handle. You tapped your fingers on your desk when your line started ringing. You sat up, letting out a deep breath, and pressed the spacebar.
“911, what’s your emergency?”
“Hello,” a male voice replied.
“How can I help you?”
“I’m making a turkey and was wondering what the internal temperature has to be?”
“You do know it’s against the law to call with a fake emergency, right?”
“Yes, but this is an emergency.”
“No, it’s not, so get off my line.” You hung up the line, shaking your head. Right away, another call came through, and you answered it.
“911, what’s your emergency?”
“Hi, hello. My friends are trapped in the elevator. The elevator must have snapped or something because there was this loud bang.”
“Where are you calling from?”
“The Natural History Museum. Please hurry!”
____________
Steve sat in his unassigned assigned spot at the dining table, eating a late lunch with the team. It was the cardinal rule at Station 107: Work as a team and eat as a family. Steve never thought he'd be able to find another firehouse he enjoyed working at, considering his previous teammates and friends at his old one. He hated leaving them behind, but he needed a fresh start, and so far, Station 107 was the best second home he could ask for.
Everyone brought something to the team as every firehouse did.  Captain Danvers, or Ace as she preferred to be called in the field, brought her confidence and experience, which made for a great leader they could trust and rely on. Thor had his strength and his bravery, but he did have an ego. Sam was a great motivator and could keep everyone on task while still cracking jokes. It was no wonder Sam was the head EMT at this firehouse. Valkyrie was a badass and wasn’t afraid to put people in their place. As for Bucky, Steve knew he would always be there for him till the end of the line.
The loud alarm blaring throughout the firehouse pulled Steve out of his stupor. Everyone knew what that sound meant, and they were ready to tackle whatever it might be. One after another, they slid down the firepole, pulled on their gear, and hopped in the truck, heading towards the scene. It wasn’t unusual to take calls that didn’t involve fire because whoever could get there the fastest was better than no one showing up at all.
Thor hopped behind the driver's seat of the fire engine, pulling out of the garage. Carol sat beside him, giving him directions while speaking with the dispatcher through her headset. The sirens were wailing with Val and Sam behind them in the ambulance.
“Alright, boys. We got an elevator crash at the Natural History Museum,” Carol said into her helmet mic after speaking with dispatch. “Dispatch says three students and their pregnant teacher are inside.”
“What’s the plan, Ace?” Steve asked into his helmet mic, concealing the siren blaring in the background.
“I have contacted the museum's elevator technician, and he has already locked and tagged the power on the cars. The car sits near the basement level, so we will approach from the top in the lobby. I want Thor on the winch…”
“Ahh---what,” Thor interrupted her.
“Calm down, big guy, you can have the next one.” She gave him the side-eye, making the rest of the crew chuckle. “Steve and Bucky are going to do an immediate retrieval and approach from the top. Sam and Val will set a perimeter and then treat those who come up. Then, I will help with the retrieval, and Thor with the winch,” she stated with the last part dripping in sarcasm.
“It still hurts,” Thor added, taking a right at the intersection.
Once on-site, everyone grabbed their gear and took their positions.  Steve and Bucky strapped on their harnesses and helmets, switching on the flashlight. They started scaling down the elevator shaft from the lobby as Thor lowered them on the winch with the retrieving rope.
“How we looking, Steve?”
“Sexy, but not like we are trying too hard, but it’s more kind of effortless.”
“Yeah, I mean, have you seen Steve’s ass in that harness. It could be American’s Ass or more like LA’s Finest Ass,” Sam commented with a whistle, echoing in the shaft.
“Yeah, yeah, I know.” Steve landed on the top of the elevator, unhooking himself while Bucky did the same.  “I’m down and unattached.”
“That’s what she said,” Carol responded with her head appearing in the shaft.
Thor chuckled, shaking his head. “Classic.”
Steve rolled his eyes and used his other flashlight to find the hatch on top of the elevator. He unclipped the lock, opening the hatch door, seeing the top of the lights. “I’m Fireman Rogers, please move towards the buttons. I’m going to kick the light out, so we can get you out of there.” It took a few kicks, but once it fell through, a few faces peeked up at him.  “How are we doing in there?”
“Oh my god, thank god, you’re here. I thought we were gonna die,” one of the kids replied, clutching his phone in his hand.
“Calm down, Flash. Everything is fine,” the pregnant woman reassured. “Right?” She looked up at Steve with worried filled eyes, and he nodded.
“Watch out, I'm coming down.” Steve crawled down into the hatch, and Bucky passed him the spare harness.  “Ma’am, you’re going up first, but first we need to get you strapped into this harness, then we’ll pull you up.” She nodded, trusting him, and allowing him to put the harness on her before Thor used the winch to pull her up.
“Okay, boys, who's going to go next?”
“I’m next,” the one they called Flash stated.
“Okay, then, how about you with the cool hat.”
“Thanks, it gives me confidence,” the kid smiled.
“And then, you,” Steve pointed to the kid wearing a Midtown School of Science and Technology shirt.
“Um...yeah--” he nodded a little too much. “--Yeah...I can go last. Get everyone else to safety first.”
“Perfect.” Steve clapped his hands together. “Let’s do this.”
___________
It turned out to be a quick rescue, and no one suffered any major injuries. Steve took some gear out to the truck and started repacking it when he felt someone tap him on the shoulder. He turned around, noticing the kid in the Midtown School of Science and Technology shirt wrapped in an ambulance blanket.
“What can I do for you, kid?”
“Peter. Peter Parker. I’m...I’m Peter Parker.” He held out his hand, and Steve shook it. “I just wanted to say thank you...thank you for saving my teacher and my friends back there. We’re on our school trip from New York, and this was an adrenaline rush experience.” Peter held up his hand, and Steve noticed it shaking.
He chuckled. “It will wear off.”
“It felt like that opening scene of that old action movie. Where John Wick saves those people that were trapped in the elevator after the bad guy tried to blow them up with a bomb. They don’t catch him obviously because it’s the opening scene, but later he puts the bomb on the bus, and that Bird Box lady has to keep driving like fifty-five miles an hour, or the bus will blow up.”
“I know the one. I think you’re thinking of Speed, but I don’t think it’s that old.”
“Yeah, yeah, that one,” he chuckled, pointing his finger at him. “It’s kind of old, I mean you’re kind of old, so it’s kind of old to you, but to me, it’s kind of new because I’m not that old.” He rambled on, his eyes widening, realizing what he was saying.
“Peter, come on. The museum is going to show us some never before seen stuff because we almost died,” the kid with the cool hat shouted from across the street.
“Coming, Ned,” he yelled back. “Thanks again, Fireman Rogers, and sorry about calling you old. I didn’t...”
“It’s okay, kid, I’m just glad you’re safe.”
Steve watched Peter run back over to his friends with a smile on his face. It was these moments when he loved his job, watching friends and families reunite after a tragedy. It was these moments where he felt like it could almost fix what he lost.
______________
You sighed, taking a seat at your usual spot at the end of the bar in Happy’s Hydrant. Happy noticed you right away and smiled, giving you a bottle of beer. You thanked him with a nod, taking a sip, and scanning the crowd. It wasn’t unusual to spot a familiar face, considering this bar was created for the heroes of Los Angeles. It welcomed all those members who served or are currently serving as first responders, but civilians were welcome, too. It’s nice to have a place to go with people you could relate to and share similar experiences with after working a twelve or twenty-four-hour shift. They understand what we go through on a day to day basis. It was one of the many reasons Happy Hogan wanted to open this bar after he retired from his Fire Chief position at Station 12.
You swiveled back and forth on your bar stool until someone familiar on the other end of the bar caught your eye. You stopped moving, your eyes not wavering from the man. Your mouth went dry, hearing your heartbeat thumping in your ears. You gulped, feeling your palms start to tingle as the muscles in your legs start to tighten. Every nerve in your body was firing, telling you to run, but it felt like if you moved an inch, he would see you, and these past three months would’ve been for nothing. He glanced your way for a brief moment, and relief flooded your whole body. You relaxed, squeezing your eyes shut as you took a few deep breaths in and out. It wasn’t him.
The weight of someone touching your shoulder makes you jump off your bar stool, and turn around to see one of the ladies you were waiting for.  “Hey, it’s only me.” Carol held up her hands in surrender, giving you a reassuring smile. “Sorry, I forgot how jumpy you can be.”
“It’s okay. Lost in my head again.” You nodded, returning to your barstool.
“Thanks for giving my transfer a chance to be the shining star of my squad last week.” She nudged your side, flagging down Happy for a drink.
“Your what...with what,” you asked, narrowing your eyes at her.
“The pool, the hose, the little girl stranded on a floaty with the water electrified. Ringing any bells?”
“Ohhh, right. That one.” You took a sip of your beer. “Fireman Rhodes or was it Ronin?”
“Rogers. Steve Rogers.” You pointed the neck of your beer bottle at her and nodded. “You made quite an impression on him. He can’t stop talking about it, and it’s getting really annoying, but I guess you did pop his dispatcher cherry.” She nudged your side with an ever-growing smile on her face. You rolled your eyes at her, shaking your head. “And if single you is interested, I am sure he is willing to mingle. At least, if you’re into that sort of thing.”
“I’m not ready to start dating. I’m still trying to find myself after going through a terrible six-year marriage.” You gave her a half shrug, eyeing the bar. “When I am ready to date again, all I want is a nice guy.”
“Steve’s nice.  Hey, you should swing by one day before your shift and meet him,” she winked, and you scoffed, rolling your eyes.
“I haven’t even filed for divorce yet.”
“Wait--” she turned on her stool to face you “--hasn’t it been three months? Why not?”
“I don’t want him knowing where I am.”
“Doesn’t he know where Thor lives?”
“No,” you sighed, shaking your head. “Let's just say he didn’t take much interest in my life while we were together. Besides, I don’t think he'd think I’d go to Thor with how everything turned out the last time I went to him for help.
“What an asshole.” She rolled her eyes, taking a sip of her beer, and you nodded.  “Well, at least you know you have an admirer,” she added, making you scoff.
“Hey ladies, sorry I’m late,” Natasha greeted, taking the other stool next to you. “Clint and I checked out this noise complaint a neighbor called in. And it turns out this guy was serenading his ex-girlfriend with hopes to win her back. It was this whole thing, and we wanted to stick around to see what happened next.”
“So what happened,” Carol asked with curious eyes, wearing a mischievous smirk on her face.
“It was crazy.” She shook her head, letting out a breathy chuckle. “She came down and punched him in the face. Apparently, this dude cheated on her with, wait for it--” she drummed her hands on the bar countertop “--her brother. It was a twist I didn’t see coming, but talk about drama on duty. Sometimes I think it would be easier fighting fires or answering phones all day.”
“Oh please, Nat, you wouldn’t last a day. You would miss seeing the excitement first hand. Over the phone, you don’t get much excitement,” you replied.
“Speak for yourself,” Carol added, taking a swig of her beer. “You would love my job, Nat. You get to boss men around.”
“I kind of do that already. Besides, I don’t think I could leave Clint. He’d be lost without me,” she smirked, signaling Happy to make her a martini.
Natasha oozed confidence, which came off as intimidating to most women. When she walked into a room, all eyes were on her, but it was attention she chose to ignore. When men would buy her drinks, she'd take it to another lovely lady. Nat was all about lifting and empowering women to feel confident in their own skin. She wasn’t afraid to tell people to back off or shut up. She was the role model you wish you had when you were with him, then maybe you would've had the confidence and courage to leave sooner.
“Here you are, Nat?” Happy pushed the martini glass to her. “Are you ladies still good?” He asked, pointing to the drinks in front of you.
“Yeah, we’re good. Thanks, Happy,” you smiled at him as he walked away, shooting you a thumbs up.
“How is apartment hunting going, YN?” Nat asked, taking a sip of her martini.
“Good, I found this cute little condo a few blocks away from work. It has a modern feel to it, but I think it would be perfect for me,” you described. “I loved it when I saw the pictures. The landlord is out of town right now, but she told me it’s mine if I want it.”
“I’m so excited for you,” Nat squealed, squeezing your forearm. “You need to get out of that testosterone-filled house and get on your own two feet again.”
“Yes, you do,” Carol agreed. “What’s your softie older brother going to think of you leaving?”
“I’m going to have to break it to him slowly.”
__________
AN: Thanks for reading part 2! I hope you all are liking it so far! If you caught it there was a quote from Brooklyn 99 that I thought was too good not to put in! 😂 Also, Darryl Jacobson, if you don't remember him, he was Thor's roommate in those Marvel shorts. I thought he would be a fun and entertaining addition to this story! Also, any ideas as to why Steve left his old firehouse? Did you enjoy the little Peter Parker cameo? And what do you think Thor is going to think of her moving it? Comments always welcome, thanks again for reading!

BUCKY’S POV
All the plans had been made. They had touched down last night and had made it to one of Bucky’s smaller estates.
The plan was to storm the castle. Noah had provided detailed plans of the place and more of Darren’s and Bucky’s men touched down a few hours ago.
The only thing now was timing. Bucky was waiting on a call from Noah to tell them when the best time to strike was. The waiting was killing him.
Agonising hours passed until Bucky got a call from Noah, “tonight. Strike tonight. Harry is gone on business and he’s taken a bunch of men. This is the best you’ll get numbers wise”.
Bucky shakes his head, looking at Steve, “I want Harry there, I can’t let him get away-“.
Steve cuts him off, “if we have a good chance to get her now, take it Buck. We’ll get Harry another time”.
Bucky stares at his friend a little longer before talking to Noah again, “okay. We’ll be there tonight, as soon as its dark. I’ll keep you posted”.
After Bucky hung up that call, he was nonstop, making sure everyone knew what they were doing and where they had to be.
It was pitch black outside when Bucky and his men arrived at the imposing stone structure. It took Bucky no time at all to disable the men posted outside.
Then once everyone was in place at entrance points around the building, he gave the signal. Everyone breached the castle together, Bucky, Steve, and Sam taking the front door.
They enter to find men already taken out and Noah waiting by a set of double wooden doors and knights armour.
Some men came down the stairs, but Bucky left them to Steve and Sam as he strides over to Noah. His only mission was finding you.
Noah guides him over to a knight’s armour and the door behind it. Bucky barely hears Noah over the chaos in the background, “go, I’ll cover the entrance”.
Bucky pats him on the shoulder briefly before stepping over the threshold. The gunfire and shouting sounds muted between the stone walls.
Bucky moves quickly, but quietly, ears straining, and eyes peeled for even a glimpse of you. It had only been a week, but it was the longest of his life. He might as well have gone without breathing for that long.
Urgency danced along every nerve ending and heightened his senses. Something was compelling him to go deeper, further. He could feel you here, somewhere.
As Bucky kept creeping along, he could see what looked like a few cells down the end of the hall. His gut clenched not only at the thought of you being in there for a week but as if he just knew you were there.
Bucky jogs past all the doors in the corridor until he’s standing in front of the cells. They were dark but he could make out a lump on a cot in the first cell.
He strides up to the door and uses his metal arm to rip the lock that was in place, letting the door swing open. He makes his way over quickly but pulls up short at just how small and fragile you look, worse than when he first saw you from the streets.
He almost hesitates to touch you for fear of breaking you. He gently pulls the thin blanket from you and hears you murmur. He released a breath he didn’t know he was holding at the knowledge you were still alive.
As he gets closer, he whispers, “Y/N, doll, it’s me, it’s Bucky”.
He hears you murmur again, “go away”.
Hurt blossoms in his chest at your words but they soon die when he hears you again, “I know it’s not you, you’re in my head. Please go away, it hurts too much to see that it’s not you”.
Bucky gently pulls on your shoulder until you twist. Anger spikes at seeing how hollow you look but he smiles at you softly as he watches you taking him in. He waits, noticing how you linger on his eyes before saying, “Bucky?”.
“Yeah, doll”.
A ghost of a smile graces your lips, but it changes just as Bucky feels a blow to the head. It doesn’t knock him out though as he rolls with the impact further into the cell. He sees stars as he hears you scream from your cot.
He shakes his head to clear his vision in time to see a blonde guy punch you in the face, knocking you out cold. Red is all he sees, fury and rage propelling him to tackle the guy to the ground.
They hit the stone ground hard, rolling with fists flying. Bucky barely even registers the blows as he finally stops the momentum. He grabs the guy by the shirt with his flesh hand and uses his metal hand to keep punching.
Bucky keeps going until he hears bone crunching, until all he can see is the dark red covering his face, until the man stops moving.
Bucky pushes the guy away as he gets up to go to you. He notices how impossibly still you are and the trickle of blood coming from your nose. Bucky lays two fingers on your throat softly. He can feel a pulse but its faint.
He wastes no more time, scooping you up into his arms, holding you close to his body as he practically runs down the hall, urgency nipping at his heels.
As Bucky gets closer to the double doors back to the main foyer, he doesn’t hear anymore gunfire. The battle obviously won.
Noah is still standing by the door, his eyes looking like saucers when they fall onto you.
Steve and Sam hide their emotions better, as Steve says, “some surrendered, what do you want us to-“.
“Kill them”, Bucky doesn’t even stop his stride to the door.
“Buck-“, Sam this time.
Bucky turns to look at the men standing around him. His men. He looks at all of them before saying, “Kill. Them. All. I will not give that order again, are we clear?”.
Bucky doesn’t wait to hear their answers. The sound of gunshots was answer enough.
*2 Days Later*
Bucky had just hung up the phone when Steve walks into the hospital room, “who was that?”.
Bucky scrapes a hand down his face as he sits in the chair next to you again, “it was the doc back home, said he would have a look over Y/N’s medical notes and see if it was safe enough for her to fly back. I want her home when she wakes up”.
Bucky sighs before looking over at Steve, “any sign?”.
Steve shakes his head, “nothing, both of them are in the wind”.
Bucky resists the urge to break things in the hospital. He watches your face, peaceful in the afternoon light to calm down instead. All he could feel was one failure after another for you. The car crashing, letting you get taken, not finding you for a week, and now letting Harry and Isaac disappear.
“It’s not your fault Buck”, Steve says, somehow always reading the thoughts in his head.
Bucky replies, still looking at you, “tell that to her when she wakes up”.
“I won’t have to because she will tell you the exact same thing”, Steve says firmly.
“What am I meant to say to her Steve? That I let that fucker get away? Me? The man that swore to protect her?”, Bucky scoffs.
Steve shuffles until he can look Bucky in the eyes, “you haven’t failed her Bucky. You’re human-“
“Well, I can’t afford to be!”, Bucky roars.
Bucky clenches his fist, biting his tongue until he continues between clenched teeth, “I have too many people counting on me. We may have won the battle this time Steve, but it’s far from over. This is a war and I fully intend to win at any cost. This is a war and I want them all dead. Every last single one of them”.
The silence stretched. Steve didn’t disagree, especially since they went after Peggy and the kids. Bucky sighs again, as if he was being crushed under the weight of everything he insisted he would carry himself, “go home Steve”.
“I’ll head back to the hotel-“.
“No. Home. Go home Steve. Go and see your wife and your kids. Take some time, because it won’t get any easier from here. Not only will we have Harry and Isaac to deal with, but we took a hit. People will be talking, and we need to get a hold of that shit. I don’t want anyone thinking they can take us. I’m still the White fucking Wolf and I need everyone to remember why. So, go home Steve. I’ll be back soon with Y/N”.
Bucky registers Steve’s shoes against the floor, and the click of the door opening. It was a few minutes of silence before Steve murmurs, “you are the White Wolf…but you’re also Bucky Barnes, my best friend, Sam’s best friend. You’re godfather to my children and practically a brother to Peggy. And Y/N? She might as well already be your wife. What I’m saying Punk is, don’t lose sight of who you really are in the midst of this war”.
He lets the words sink in before Bucky hears the click of the door closing. Bucky goes back to studying your face. His eyes tracing the bruises changing colour over your sharp angles. The rise and fall of your chest.
He lets a tear fall as he lays his head lightly on your stomach, hugging you like a lost child would their teddy. This was the first time he ever felt, he ever wished that he was anyone other than a mob boss.
YOUR POV
You come back slowly. To the sound of beeping and the feel of a soft, slightly ridged bed beneath you.
You keep your eyes closed, trying to get a sense with your body if someone is in the room.
When it feels safe enough you open your eyes slowly, not having a choice against the lights in the room. Your eyes water and you let the tears travel down your cheeks as you try not to move.
A quick scan of the room shows there is no one around and the longer you look around the faster memory comes back. You don’t want to believe your eyes. You don’t want to believe that you’re in the med wing of your home, with the thought of Bucky somewhere within. You didn’t want to believe it for fear that you will wake up back in the cell or in that room with Isaac.
But the longer you lay there, staring at every piece of the room, focusing on your breathing the more you realised this isn’t a dream or a hallucination.
You sit up, muscles protesting the movement. It takes you longer to swing your legs out of bed and even longer to stand on your feet.
The first time you try, you crumple like a fawn on new legs, the bed the only thing stopping you from hitting the floor.
Your chest heaving, you try again, standing in one place a little longer before feeling your legs buckle again. You repeat the process a few times, until your shaky legs are strong enough to carry you.
That is when you decide to take everything out. The machines start beeping and you know your time is limited now, people will crowd the room within minutes, but you have to find Bucky first. You have to know this is real.
You hold onto the bed for as long as possible as you let your legs remember how to walk on their own. When you run out of bed you grab a hold of the door, letting it swing out as you follow the wall with your hands.
The halls are empty, and you couldn’t be more grateful as you start to take easier steps closer and closer to Bucky’s office.
As the office comes within sight you hear the door open and he steps out, looking one way and then the other, his eyes landing on you. He was holding a phone to his ear but the moment he sees you he hangs up.
You take him in, both in disbelief at either ends of the hall staring. Your lips part, “Bucky?”.
He strides towards you at the sound of his name, purpose filling every step. He doesn’t hesitate as he reaches you. His hands gentle against your skin as he sweeps you up bridal style. The smell of him fills your nose as you bring your hands up to cup his face.
You stare at him for the longest time, focusing on his eyes and you finally accept that its him as your eyes well up, “Bucky”.

Of Course You Did - Part 2 (Natasha Romanoff x Johnson!Fem!Reader)
Masterlist
Tumblr media
Previously:
"Anyway," Natasha says with a laugh. She holds out her hand, "I didn't have a chance to introduce myself at the party. I'm Natasha."
"Hi," Skye shakes Natasha's hand. "(Y/n)'s told me a lot about you."
"She has, has she?" Natasha smirks and (Y/n) shifts uncomfortably.
3rd Person POV
Fury had assembled the Avengers and Skye in the Bartons' kitchen.
"Ultron took you folks out of play to buy himself time," Fury says, as (Y/n) leans against Natasha's chair.
Natasha smiles at her niece as Lila runs over handing Natasha a picture of a butterfly that she had colored.
"My contacts," Fury looks at (Y/n) he says this, "all say he's building something. The amount of vibranium he made off with, I don't think it's just one thing,"
"What about Ultron himself?" Steve asks, leaning against the doorway.
"Oh, he's easy to track. He's everywhere," Fury answers. "The guy is multiplying faster than a Catholic rabbit."
"It still doesn't help us get an angle on any of his plans, though," Fury says.
Natasha glances up at (Y/n) who was looking down at the picture of the butterfly.
"Is he still going after launch codes?" Tony asks.
"Yes, he is," Fury says. "But he's not making any headway."
"I cracked the Pentagon's firewall in high school on a dare," Tony informs everyone.
"Well, I contacted our friends at the Nexus about that," Fury continues.
"Nexus?" Steve asks.
"It's the work Internet hub in Oslo," Skye tells the soldier. "Every byte of data flows through there. Fastest access on Earth."
"So, what did they say?" Clint asks.
"He's fixated on the missiles," Fury answers. "But the codes are constantly being changed."
"That you?" (Y/n) asks her sister.
"No, I don't know anyone who could do something that complicated," Skye replies and (Y/n) nods.
"We don't know who it is," Fury says. "To be honest, some of us thought it was Miss Skye here, but now we know it's not her."
"So, we have an ally?" Natasha asks.
"Ultron's got an enemy," Fury corrects. "That's not the same thing."
"There is that whole, 'The enemy of my enemy is my friend,' thing, but whatever," (Y/n) argues.
"Still, I'd pay folding money to know who it is," Fury says.
"I might need to visit Oslo," Tony thinks aloud.
"Ooh, you should take me," Skye says, raising a hand.
"Well, this is good times, boss," Natasha says loudly, looking down at her hands folded together on the table, "but I was kind of hoping when I saw you, you'd have more than that."
"I do," Fury says, looking at the redhead. "I have you. Back in the day, I had eyes everywhere and ears everywhere else. You kids had all the tech you could dream up. Here we all are, back on Earth, with nothing but our wit and our will to save the world. Ultron says the Avengers are the only thing between him and his mission. And whether or not he admits it, his mission is global destruction." Natasha who had looked up at Fury looks back down. "All this, laid in a grave. So stand. Outwit the platinum bastard."
"Steve doesn't like that kind of talk," is the only thing Natasha says as her mouth twitches into a smile.
"You know what, Romanoff?" Steve says.
"So, what does he want?" Fury asks.
"To become better," Steve answers. "Better than us. He keeps building bodies."
"Person bodies," Tony adds.
(Y/n) reaches down and studies the picture of the butterfly again.
"The human form is inefficient," Tony continues. "Biologically speaking, we're outmoded. But he keeps coming back to it."
"When you two programmed him to protect the human race," Natasha addresses Bruce and Tony, "you amazingly failed."
"They don't need to be protected," (Y/n) realizes after a moment. "Remember what Ultron said back at the Tower, 'You want to protect the world but you don't want it to change. How is humanity saved if it's not allowed to evolve?'?" (Y/n) pauses, a scowl spreading across her face. Everyone had turned to her now. "Ultron's going to evolve."
"How?" Fury asks Coulson's Second in Command.
"Has anyone been in contact with Helen Cho?" Bruce asks, exchanging a glance with (Y/n).
(Y/n) walks into the other room and motions for Fury to follow. "Did Coulson tell you about THETA Protocol?" (Y/n) murmurs.
Fury looks at her, a questioning look in his eyes.
"Ask Coulson about it and tell him it's time to tell the rest of the team. I'll get in touch with you about where to bring it," (Y/n) mutters. "Oh, and bring the team - Morse, Hunter, Coulson, May, Mack, Fitz, and Simmons. I think we'll need help."
Fury nods and leaves the room.
(Y/n) crosses her arms as she watches Fury walk out the door.
"I'll take Natasha, Clint, and (Y/n)," Steve says the next morning as everyone suits up.
"All right. Strictly recon," Tony says, Skye next to him. "We'll hit the Nexus. We'll join you as soon as we can."
(Y/n) walks down the stairs, talking with Natasha when she stops, catching sight of her sister, and walks over, wrapping Skye in a tight hug.
"Be careful," (Y/n) murmurs.
"Back at you," Skye says. "I'll see you soon. Love you."
"I love you too," (Y/n) steps back.
Skye leaves with Tony and (Y/n) and Natasha step outside onto the porch.
(Y/n) was gazing out into the field and Natasha nudges her gently.
"What's going through that head of yours?" Natasha asks.
"I'm scared," (Y/n) admits, looking at Natasha with a frown. "I'm scared about how this is all going to turn out," she pauses, as though considering her thoughts. "I really like you, Natasha," she murmurs and Natasha's green eyes soften.
"I do too," Natasha replies. "I thought I proved that when I kissed you," she says in a teasing voice.
(Y/n)'s mouth twitches. "That was a very nice kiss," (Y/n) says and Natasha's cheeks take on a red tint now.
"Let's go," Steve says, and (Y/n) jumps a little.
Wanda looks into the red android's head and screams, pressing her hand to her chest as she backs up into her twin's arms.
Pietro brushes hair out of his sister's face, murmuring something softly.
"How could you?" Wanda stutters, looking at Ultron, her eyes wide.
"How could I what?" Ultron asks, looking at the teenager.
"Y-you said we w-would destroy the Avengers. Make a better world," Wanda says, looking up into Ultron's eyes.
"It will be better," Ultron says calmly.
"When everyone is dead?" Wanda asks and Pietro looks over at the android as well.
"That is not . . . The human race will have every opportunity to improve," Ultron says.
"And if they don't?" Pietro asks, turning to face Ultron now.
"Ask Noah," Ultron says simply.
"You are a madman," Wanda says softly, and (Y/n) shrinks into the corner just outside the room a little more.
"There were more than a dozen extinction-level events," Ultron tries to explain. "Why, even the dinosaurs got theirs. When the Earth starts to settle, God throws a stone at it. And, believe me, he's winding up. We have to evolve. There's no room," he rubs his robotic hand on the Cradle, "for the weak."
"And who decides who's weak?" Pietro asks softly.
"Life," Ultron chuckles and as he looks at the ground, as Wanda uses her powers to shake Dr. Cho from her enchantment. "Life always decides.
"There's incoming," Ultron says as he hears the Quinjet. "The Quinjet. We have to move."
"That's not a problem," Dr. Cho says as she pauses the download of Ultron's new body.
Ultron shoots a laser towards the scientist and Cho collapses.
Ultron takes the Cradle and the legionaries outside leaving Wanda and Pietro alone. (Y/n) flashes the two a warning look as she steps out of her hiding spot and crosses over to Cho in a few strides.
(Y/n) grabs some bandages and wraps the scientist's shoulder tightly.
"(Y/n)?" comes Natasha's voice. "What's going on?"
"Ultron shot Cho," (Y/n) answers, keeping an eye on the two teenagers as they continue to watch her tighten the bandages around Cho's shoulder. "I patched up her shoulder."
"He's uploading himself into the body," Cho says, and (Y/n)'s expression turns hard. "The real power is inside the Cradle. The gem."
"You get that, Steve?" (Y/n) asks, rising to her feet.
"I'm on it," Steve answers.
(Y/n) turns her (E/c) gaze onto Wanda and Pietro. "Where'd he go?" (Y/n) asks.
Pietro is the one who answers, "We don't know."
(Y/n) glances down at Cho, who had pulled at her arm. "You need to stop him."
(Y/n) nods, unsheathing the sword from her back and Wanda takes a step back.
"I'm going to slice a couple of kids in half," (Y/n) says over her shoulder as she runs outside.
(Y/n) teleports to Steve's side as he was standing on a bridge.
"I got a private jet taking off across town," Natasha says in (Y/n)'s ear. "No manifest. That could be him."
"There. It's a truck from the lab," Clint says. "Right above you two. On the loop by the bridge."
"I've got it," (Y/n) says softly into the COM set. (Y/n) teleports silently on top of the truck
"You've got three with the Cradle," Clint tells (Y/n). "I can take out the driver."
"Negative. The gem could level the city," Steve says and (Y/n) hums her agreement.
"Also, I'm standing on top of the truck," (Y/n) adds.
"We need to draw out Ultron," Steve says.
There's a click in (Y/n)'s ear and Natasha speaks in her ear again, "Be careful," the redhead murmurs.
"Don't worry, sweetheart, I'll be alright," (Y/n) answers as Steve jumps from the bridge and handing onto the doors. A red laser shoots through the door, knocking Steve around. He swings the doors around and the door gets shot by another laser, sending the doors dragging across the ground, creating sparks.
"Well, he's definitely unhappy," Steve says as (Y/n) teleports beside him. "We're gonna try to keep him that way."
"I've never done this before, I hope this works," (Y/n) mutters, placing a hand on Steve's shoulder.
With a blink, Steve and (Y/n) are standing on the top of the truck.
"Nice," (Y/n) says, but dives to the side as a laser shoots through the roof of the truck.
"You two aren't a match for him," Clint says.
"Yeah, thanks Clint," (Y/n) grumbles.
"You know what's in that Cradle?" Ultron asks, flying up to meet the two on top of the truck. Steve turns as Ultron blasts a laser at him, the laser bouncing off his shield. "The power to make real change. And that terrifies you."
"I wouldn't call it a comfort," Steve says, pulling his shield off his back and throwing it at Ultron.
"Stop it," Ultron hisses and (Y/n) teleports away, fetching the shield.
With another blink, (Y/n) realized she has miscalculated her jump and was hanging onto the front of the truck. She lets out a grunt as she swings herself to one of the mirrors as one of Ultron's legionaries shoots at her.
"Steve!" (Y/n) yells, hanging onto the mirror with one hand, the Captain's shield in the other.
(Y/n) throws the shield up and Steve catches it.
"You good?" Natasha asks in (Y/n)'s ear.
(Y/n) teleports behind Ultron and kicks the android in the back.
"(Y/n)? You good?" Natasha asks again, worry in her voice.
"Yeah," (Y/n) dives to the side as Ultron shoots a laser at her. "Just peachy."
Ultron knocks Steve's shield away again, and it lands on the road.
"I am not going to get that again," (Y/n) says, attacking Ultron as the android pulls Steve into a headlock.
Suddenly, Steve gets his shield back and knocks back Ultron, who knocks back (Y/n), who falls off the truck.
(Y/n) grabs the side with a hand and hauls herself back up.
Ultron catches sight of Natasha and flings up a hand, making some of the concrete rises into the air, making the redhead stop on her motorcycle.
"The hell!" (Y/n) yells, advancing on Ultron as he blasts Steve off the truck.
(Y/n) looks up as something - the Quinjet - shoots at Ultron, drawing the guards out of the back of the truck.
Steve had gotten back on top of the truck. He knocks Ultron back into a pillar and Ultron flies into Steve, blasting both of them into the train, (Y/n) teleporting beside Steve, pulling the soldier up.
Steve throws his shield around to (Y/n), and she slams it into Ultron's back, then throwing it back around to Steve.
"I'm going in," comes Natasha' voice again. "Cap, (Y/n), can you keep him occupied?"
"What do you think we've been doin'?" Steve asks as Ultron kicks him to the corner of the train.
Ultron turns to (Y/n), the teleporter dodging Ultron's punches; she let's out a grunt as Ultron punches her in the side.
A moment later, a blur pushes Ultron away, and (Y/n) unsheathes her sword.
"Please don't do this," Ultron says, looking between Pietro and Wanda - who had used her telekinetic powers to cross some bars between (Y/n) and Ultron.
"What choice do we have?" Wanda asks, her Sokovian accent thick.
Ultron aims at (Y/n), who had teleported in front of Steve, and the two have to duck the laser and it shoots straight through the train.
"We lost him," (Y/n) says into her COM set, speaking directly to Natasha."He's coming back your way."
As the Avenger is speaking, Steve had run to the front of the train.
"Nat, you gotta go!" Clint tells him.
(Y/n) goes to say something, but staggers as something rocks the train.
"Civilians in our path," Steve says and (Y/n) nods, her and Pietro teleporting / speeding around, getting the people out of the way of the train as it screeches to a halt.
Each teleportation seems to make (Y/n) more tired and (Y/n) leans against a wall, breathing heavily.
"The Cradle," Wanda prompts. "Did you get it?" she asks as (Y/n) walks forward, her right arm clasped against her stomach, her sword sheathed on her back.
Steve shoots a concerned look at his shorter friend. "Stark will take care of it," he says as (Y/n) turns, pressing a hand to her ear.
"I'm not getting anything," (Y/n) says, turning back to address Steve. "Imma head back, but you'll need to find a ride. I can't take all of y'all with me."
Steve nods his understanding and with a blink she's standing in the lab.
Tony, Bruce, and Skye stare at her but then surge forward as (Y/n) sways. She sags against Skye.
"I'm good. I'm good," (Y/n) argues as her sister sets her down in a chair.
"Sit," Tony orders and (Y/n) sighs in defeat.
"Clint and Nat should be on his way with the Cradle," (Y/n) tells the three.
"Where's Cap?" Tony asks.
"Steve had to find another way back," (Y/n) answers, her eyes closing a little.
(Y/n) had fallen asleep by the time the Quinjet had returned. She is slowly waking up when she hears, "Anything on Nat?"
"I haven't heard."
(Y/n)'s eyes fly open and she sits up.
"But she's alive, or Ultron would be rubbing our faces in it," Skye tells her sister hastily, sensing (Y/n)'s worry.
"This is sealed tight," Clint says, inspecting the Cradle.
"We're gonna need to access the program, break it down from within," Bruce says.
"Any chance Natasha could send you a message outside the Internet?" Tony asks Clint and (Y/n) rises to her feet. "Old-school spy stuff?"
"There are some nets I can cast," Skye says, and the two go downstairs. "We'll find her."
"I could try to find her," (Y/n) says. "Teleportation and all."
"I don't think you should be teleporting for at least a few hours," Bruce says and (Y/n) looks at him, then, defeated, she nods. "I can work on tissue degeneration," Bruce says, turning to Tony. "if you could fry whatever operational system Cho implanted."
"Yeah, about that," Tony says rubbing the back of his neck.
"No," Bruce says.
"You have to trust me," Tony says and (Y/n) looks at the billionaire.
"Kind of don't," Bruce says, backing up.
"Our ally, the guy protecting the military's nuclear codes, I found him," Tony says, flicking his wrist.
"Hello Dr. Banner, Agent (Y/n)," Jarvis says.
"Jarvis," (Y/n) says, turning to study the orange ball.
"Ultron didn't go after Jarvis because he was angry," Tony explains. "He attacked him because he was scared of what he can do. So Jarvis went underground. Scattered, dumped his memory."
"But not his protocols," (Y/n) says, realization dawning in her eyes.
"He didn't even know he was in there until I pieced him together," Tony says, nodding at (Y/n)'s realization.
Bruce scoffs before placing a hand at his temple. "So, you want me to help you put Jarvis into this thing?" he asks.
"No! Of course not," Tony says.
"We want to help you put Jarvis in there," (Y/n) steps forward to stand at Tony's shoulder.
"We're out in the field here," Tony continues, watching Bruce. "You know bio-organics better than anyone."
"And you just assume that Jarvis's operational matrix can beat Ultron's?" Bruce asks.
"Well, we've got all of Jarvis, and only part of Ultron," (Y/n) reasons and Tony nods.
"And Jarvis has been beating him from inside without knowing it," Tony adds. "This is the opportunity. We can create Ultron's perfect self without the homicidal glitches he thinks are his winning personality."
"We have to," (Y/n) says.
"I believe it's worth a go," Jarvis agrees.
"I'm in a loop," Bruce exclaims, throwing his arms out. "I'm caught in a time loop. This is exactly where it all went wrong."
"I know. I know. I know what everyone's gonna say," Tony says, placing a hand on his friend's shoulder. "But they're already saying it. We're mad scientists," Tony says and (Y/n)'s eyes flash with amusement. "We're monsters, buddy. We've gotta own it. Make a stand."
"It's not a loop," (Y/n) says softly and Bruce looks at her. "We know what went wrong last time."
"It's the end of the line," Tony adds.
A figure stirs on the concrete floor, before her eyes blink open.
"I wasn't sure you would wake up," comes Ultron's voice. "I hoped you would. I wanted to show you. I don't have anyone else. Upsetting the other female Avenger died earlier."
The figure on the ground groans in pain as she pushes herself up on an elbow, tears swimming in her eyes.
"I think a lot about meteors. The purity in them. Boom! The end. Start again."
The figure, her eyes full of pain and tears, stares back at Ultron.
"The world made clean for the new man to rebuild."
She shifts back a little.
"I was meant to be new," Ultron says, turning his red eyes on the woman on the ground. "I was meant to be beautiful. The world would have looked into the sky and seen hope, seen mercy."
The figure lets out a grunt as she scoots back a little more.
"Instead, they'll look up in horror because of you," Ultron snarls. "You've wounded me."
The figure on the ground scoots back as Ultron walks towards her.
"But, like the man said, what doesn't kill me . . ."
Ultron towers over the woman now.
Something grabs Ultron's head and rips it off, another Ultron standing behind it as the figure scrambles back in fear.
". . . just makes me stronger."
Ultron steps forward, closing the bars in front of the woman, who begins choking back her tears.
"This framework is not compatible," (Y/n) comments as she types furiously on a keyboard.
"The genetic coding tower is at ninety-seven percent," Bruce says, turning to the woman. "You have got to upload that schematic in the next three minutes."
Tony steps up to (Y/n)'s side, the two working together to power through the framework.
"I'm gonna say this once," comes Steve's voice.
"How about 'none-ce'?" Tony asks, leaving (Y/n) as he steps over to stand in front of Steve.
"Shut it down!" Steve orders.
"Nope, not gonna happen," (Y/n) says, staring down the Captain, her fingers naturally hitting the correct keys.
The Maximoff twins beside Steve don't know whether it is a trick of the blue light from the screen, or of lightning had flickered in her eyes.
"You don't know what you're going," Steve says.
"And you do?" Bruce asks. "She's not in your head?" Bruce asks, pointing at Wanda.
"I know you're angry," Wanda says, stepping around Steve.
"Oh, we're way past that," Bruce says, a vain pulsing in his neck. "I could choke the life out of you and never change a shade."
"Banner, after everything that's happened . . ." Steve says, Wanda's expression having faltered.
"It's nothing compared to what's coming!" Tony says, and there's a rumble of thunder outside the Tower, everyone stopping for a moment. It was clear outside . . .
"You don't know what's in there," Wanda retorts.
"This isn't a game!" Steve yells.
"No, no. Go on," Pietro says, holding up one of the many cables that had been unplugged. "You were saying?"
There is a gunshot and Pietro falls through the glass floor of the lab.
"I'm rerouting the upload," Tony says.
(Y/n), on the other hand, was staring, well, at her hands. They were glowing blue.
Amongst all the commotion in the room, (Y/n) seems to be the only one who notices Thor. He looks at (Y/n)'s hands and nods towards the Cradle. As if controlled, (Y/n) vaults over the rail and holds her hands above the Cradle. Thor raises his hammer, and in sync, lighting flows into the Cradle.
Thor and (Y/n) stare at the Cradle, then being blasted back when a figure explodes out of the Cradle.
Everyone stares at the figure. It's outershell was bright red, and there is a glowing yellow gem in it's forehead.
Catching sight of Thor, the figure launches itself at him. Thor deflects the attack, throwing the red figure through glass and it stops, looking outside.
(Y/n) jump over the exploded Cradle and follows, Thor just behind her; the others following Thor.
The red android is looking outside and Skye had appeared right beside her sister.
Thor sets his hammer on a table and steps forward.
"I am sorry," the red android apologizes. "That was . . . odd. Thank you," the android nods to Thor, then (Y/n).
"Thor." Steve prompts. "You helped create this?"
"I've had a vision," Thor tells him. "A whirlpool that sucks in all hop of life, and at its center is that," Thor points to the stone in the Vision's head.
"What? The gem?" Bruce asks.
"It's the Mind Stone. It's on of the six Infinity Stones. The greatest power in the universe, unparalleled in its destructive capabilities."
"Then why would you and (Y/n) bring . . ." Steve begins.
"Because Stark is right," Thor says.
"Oh, it's definitely the end times," Bruce says.
"The Avengers cannot defeat Ultron, even with Miss (Y/n)'s new lighting powers," Thor continues, nodding at (Y/n).
"Not alone," Vision adds.
"Why does your Vision sound like Jarvis?" Steve asks.
"We reconfigured Jarvis's matrix to create something new," Tony says, stepping around to study the Vision.
"I think I've had my fill of new," Steve says.
"You think I am a child of Ultron," Vision says.
"You're not?" Steve asks, his voice hard.
Vision stops, shooting Steve a look. "I'm not Ultron. I'm not Jarvis. I am . . . I am."
"I looked in your head," Wanda says and everyone turns to look at her, "and saw annihilation."
"Look again."
Clint scoffs, "Her seal of approval means jack to me." He steps forward.
"Their powers, the horrors in our heads, Ultron himself, they all came from the Mind Stone," Thor explains. "And they're nothing compared to what it can unleash. But with it on our side."
"Is it?" Steve asks harshly. "Are you? On our side?"
"I don't think it's that simple," Vision says.
"Well, it better get real simple real soon," Clint says.
"I am on the side of life," Vision begins. "Ultron isn't."
Steve had told the Avengers to suit up and (Y/n) - obviously - offers to go find Natasha as the others board the Quinjet.
With a blink, (Y/n)'s standing somewhere else, as if she'd been summoned.
Natasha's Widow's Bites and stun batons were in a bag slung over (Y/n)'s back.
The area was dark and it was scarily quiet.
"What the hell is going on here?" (Y/n) whispers as she steps farther down the hallway.
(Y/n) creeps down the hallway and when seeing no one, she relaxes a little.
"Natasha!" (Y/n) calls, jogging down the hallway.
"(Y/n)?" comes a familiar voice and (Y/n) darts down the hallway.
"Nat? You okay?" (Y/n) asks as she runs up, setting the bag on the ground. She grows concerned as she sees Natasha's watery eyes.
"You found a key?" Natasha asks.
"Uh, yeah," (Y/n) raises her hand before putting it on the lock. "Watch out," (Y/n) tells her and Natasha scoots back. (Y/n) concentrates on her hand and the lock explodes. "Are you okay?" (Y/n) asks the redhead, worry evident in her tone.
Natasha throws herself at (Y/n), wrapping her in a tight hug.
(Y/n) returns the hug. "I'm glad you're okay," (Y/n) murmurs.
"Same, I'm glad you're here," Natasha says, pulling back out of the hug.
As if thinking about something, Natasha steps forward and presses her lips against (Y/n)'s.
After a moment, Natasha pulls away again and (Y/n)'s eyes are warm with affection.
"Now," Natasha says, her cheeks red. "Where's everyone else?"
"They're up in the city," (Y/n) replies. "I brought your Widowy things," (Y/n) says, picking up the bag.
Natasha laughs pulling her Widow's Bites from the bag and (Y/n) helps her attach them to her wrists. Natasha then pulls her stun batons and slides them into their holsters on her thighs.
"So, how we gonna get out of here?" Natasha asks and (Y/n) cocks her head at the redhead in front of her.
(Y/n) laughs. "I thought you were smart," she teases, her eyes bright.
"Oh, right," Natasha says, looking a little sheepish.

Chapter 5
Bucky POV
Steve, Clint, Loki, and I hurried up the steps of the library, hoping to find Vision before the meeting started. The four of us stumbled into the main room, seeing a table of men talking softly; I spotted Vision’s light hair first.
“There he is,” I whispered, jabbing an elbow at Loki, who stood next to me.
“Hey, Vis,” Loki called, starting towards our friend.
“Hey, guys!” Vision called, waving us over.
“Who are these guys?” a man next to Vision with a mustache asked.
“Oh, these are a few of my buddies. This is Loki Laufeyson” -Vision rested a hand on Loki’s shoulder as he sat next to him- “then Bucky Barnes.” I took a seat on Loki’s other side, waving when Vision brought attention to me. “Steve Rogers.” Vision pointed to Steve, who took the chair at the other head of the table opposite the man with the mustache. Steve smiled softly, waving as his eyes flicked around the table. “And Clint Barton.” Vision pointed to Clint, who sat across from me.
“Heya, gentlemen,” Clint greeted, leaning back in his chair, spreading his legs, getting comfortable. The other men around the table mumbled ‘hellos’ or waved at us, still visibly uneasy.
“So, new business?” Vision spoke up.
“New business actually means another round of Danishes,” the man named Norm said. I sighed, quickly realizing these guys were just as bad as the woman. Loki passed me the box after pulling a treat out for himself, smirking at me.
“Gossip club, anyone?” Loki mumbled. I snorted, holding back my laughter as I picked up a raspberry Danish for myself, and Steve then passing the box to Clint.
“I thought we’d be talking about neighborhood safety, not a kid’s treehouse,” I chuckled. Loki dropped his head, covering his mouth as he chewed, hiding his smile.
“Anyone else get the wrong idea?” Steve asked, leaning forward.
“I was thinking the same thing,” Clint snorted, taking a bite of his pastry. A fit of laughter from the other end of the table caught our attention; the four of us turned our heads, trying to catch up on the conversation.
“Hey, care for a stick o' Big Red?” the guy I recognized as Wanda and Vision’s neighbor Herb said.
“Well, hold on there a second. Didn't you hear the man? He doesn't eat food,” Norm cut in, stopping Vision’s hand short.
“Is gum food?” the man with the mustache asked.
“Well, my understanding is that it's purely for mastication,” Vision stated matter-of-factly.
“Oh boy,” Loki whispered, hiding his smile. Steve looked at his lap, a small smile on his lips, and Clint threw his head back, covering his mouth; I elbowed Loki and kicked Steve’s leg, glaring at Clint.
“No, I don't do that,” Herb shot back, visibly uncomfortable.
“Ah, well, when in Westview…Cheers,” Vision took the gun, putting it in his mouth.
“Stop him!” I hissed at Loki, but it was too late.
“This could be a problem,” Loki mumbled, his eyes glued to Vision.
“Who knew you were such a funny guy?” I heard Norm chuckle in the background.
“It’s gum; what’s the problem?” Clint whispered, leaning over the table.
“And to think you came here all hot and bothered about protocols and nonsense. We actually thought you were serious!” Herb laughed, clapping a hand on Vision’s back. Loki tensed next to me when he heard the audible noise of Vision swallowing.
“That’s the problem!” Steve hissed, falling heavily back into his chair.
“So what? He swallowed it, big deal,” Clint said, tilting his head, still not understanding.
“He’s a machine”-Steve leaned over to whisper to Clint- “he has gears, not a stomach.” It took Clint a few seconds, then his eyes widened, his panicked gaze flicking to Vision.
“Shit,” Clint mumbled, rubbing the bridge of his nose.
“You okay, Vis?” Loki asked, leaning closer. Vision’s brows pulled together, bringing a hand to rest on his chest as he blinked a few times. “Vis?” Loki tried again.
           “I…*hiccup*…think so,” Vision croaked.
“This isn’t good,” Steve mumbled, the panic in his voice sending his voice up a few octaves.
“Hey” -I grabbed his forearm with my left hand - “he’ll be fine.” Steve sighed, nodding after a few seconds before his shoulders started to relax. I smiled at him, squeezing his arm; the soft whining noise of my arm filled the room, and I watched the lights in the library make the dark metal of my hand twinkle.
“What the…” I gasped, ripping my hand away from Steve. My hand started to shake as I inspected the metal plates slotting together on my fingers and my palm. My heart rate jumped, beating against my ribs as panic set in and the once soft whining in my arm became deafening. I screwed my eyes shut, trying to catch my breath; I slowly opened my eyes, finding the slightly lighter skin of my palm facing me. I blanched, opening and closing my flesh fist that was metal only a few seconds ago. I glanced up and Clint was staring wide-eyed at me, but he quickly turned to listen to what Steve was saying.
“What’s wrong?” Loki mumbled, elbowing my arm lightly. Steve looked away from Clint when Loki spoke, his gaze boring into the side of my head.
“Does my arm look funny?” I croaked, glancing at Loki.
“No?” Loki said, his brows pulling together in confusion. “Are you okay, Bucky?”
“Uh, yeah. Yeah, I’m fine,” I stammered, inspecting my hand again.
“Okay?” Loki mumbled, flicking his gaze to Steve.
“Well, I think that’s all we have time for today, gentlemen,” Herb’s voice cut in, stopping my internal meltdown.
“We’ll catch you guys at the talent show later,” Norm said with a smile, pushing away from his chair. I set my hand on the table, wondering why I was staring at it so intensely before smiling at the men at the other end of the table.
“See ya later, guys,” I said, nodding once. “Help me carry Vision,” I mumbled, leaning closer to Loki.
“On it,” Loki whispered. “Hey Vis, we have to get you ready for the talent show.”
“Talent show?” Vis giggled, stumbling as he stood. “What talent do I have?”
“You and Wanda are doing a magic show,” I assured in a soft voice, firmly gripping the back of his arm. Loki did the same on the other side, helping me lead Vision towards the door. Steve and Clint brought up the rear, glancing around to make sure no one was shooting us odd looks.
“Magic!” Vision exclaimed, giggling again, stumbling through the door.
“Shoo, don’t yell,” Loki warned softly.
“But no one” -Vision wretches like he might throw up- “can know *hiccup* about Wanda!”
“You’re going to pretend,” Loki reminds him, patting his hand.
“This is going to be a mess,” I sighed, dropping my head forward.
“You can say that again,” Clint grunts from behind me.
***
“Come on, Vis. Wanda is waiting for you,” I grunted, dragging Vision along. Vision swatted my hand away, stumbling forward to start up the steps. Loki’s head dropped back, his eyes closing as he pulled in a deep breath.
“(Y/N) and Nat are going to kill all of us if he messes this up for Wanda,” Loki groaned, running a hand through his short hair.
“Don’t remind me,” I grumbled, rubbing my temples. Seeing Wanda glaring at us from behind the stage, I winced, mouthing ‘I’m sorry’ before dragging Loki towards the crowd. I pushed Loki towards his seat across from (Y/N), plopping into the chair behind Loki across from Steve. Clint and Nat’s table was in front of us; Clint turned around, raising an eyebrow at Loki and me.
“I take it by the look on your face that Vision isn’t any better,” Steve whispered.
“No, and Wanda was not happy,” I sighed, bracing my elbows on the table. I lifted my head to talk again, but Dottie hurried onto the stage, drawing everyone’s attention.
“I want to thank you all for coming out to support Westview Elementary. For the children.” Dottie smiled, waiting for the crowd to respond.
“For the children,” the audience chorused. I shot a look at Steve, raising my eyebrow but caught the same fearful look on Steve’s face. I glanced over my shoulder, seeing (Y/N) fidget in her seat, and peek at Nat, who was picking at the tablecloth.
“What the hell?” Loki whispered over his shoulder to me.
“I second that,” Clint mumbles, leaning back in his chair.
“We were about to ask you two the same thing,” Steve added. Dottie drew our attention back to the stage, but I couldn’t ignore the somersaults my stomach was doing.
“And for our final act... I give you, Wanda and Vision.” I sucked in a deep breath, noticing Loki, Steve, and Clint doing the same thing as Wanda walked on stage.
“What’s wrong?” I faintly heard (Y/N) ask Loki.
“I’m going to say this: it was not our fault,” Loki whispers back. I anxiously waited for Vision to walk out, but nothing happened for a few seconds, and Wanda was looking tenser; suddenly, Vision threw the curtains open.
“Oh! Yeah! I've got to go! Hello, Westview! Good afternoon. It's so lovely to be…” -Vision knocked his hip into the railing of the steps- “I'm so sorry. Excuse me. I am Glamour, and this is my delightful assistant, Illusion.” Vision’s words slurred together as he swayed in place, lazily gesturing to Wanda.
“I am Glamour, and he's Illusion,” Wanda corrected, exaggerating her voice, playing the part.
“Yeah, what she said. Today, we will lie to you, and yet you will believe our little deceptions because human beings are easily fooled due to their limited understanding of the inner workings of the universe.” Vision shrugged, flopping his hands to the side in front of him. “Flourish!” Vision pulled one hand pack, facing his other palm towards the crowd like he was shooting something from his palm. I dropped my head onto the table with a dense thud, resisting the urge to do it again.
           “We’re dead,” Loki stated.
           “Yep,” I mumbled.
“It was nice knowing you,” Steve huffed.
“You just do it; you don't say it out loud, honey,” my enhanced hearing picked up on Wanda’s whisper and Vision’s scoff.
“And now my wife and I will delight you in your dumbstruck little faces. Flourish!” Vision bellowed. I lifted my head just in time to see Vision starting to fly, a pleased, drunk-looking smile on his face. The audience around us began to gasp except for the six of us; Loki, (Y/N), Clint, Nat, Steve, and I all tensed, staring wide-eyed at the stage.
“We need to help her!” (Y/N) harshly whispered to Loki, starting to stand.
“Wait,” Loki shot back. Suddenly a pulley system appear, connected to the back of Vision pants; I let out the air I was holding in as I watched Vision now dangling in midair.
“Ha! See there? He's using a rope,” Norm shouted from somewhere in the audience. Wanda giggled, moving the sign from in front of the pulley; she started to move the crank, smiling brightly.
“Wanda, what's... Oh, no! Oh! No! Wanda, please! Darling, let me down!” Vision shouted, flailing. “I’m feeling pukey!” I couldn’t help but laugh along with the crowd, momentarily forgetting the issue. “Ooh!” Wanda finally let Vision down, who stumbled a little, trying to regain the little composure he had.
“Maybe this won’t be too bad,” I chuckled.
“Uh, what's next? Oh! Yeah, this is... This is gonna be great!” Vision got excited, hurrying towards the piano, a goofy smile spreading across his face. “A staggering feat of strength!” I nearly choked on my spit when Vision lifted the piano, making noises to encourage the audience as he smiled, proud of himself.
“Illusion... Uh... Uh... Illusion, Master of Enigma, allow me,” Wanda called, hurrying towards her husband. My eyes widened, and I heard Steve gasp when Wanda took the piano from Vision; Wanda turned to the side, showing the audience that it was only board, giggling and winking at the crowd.
“Whoops! You weren't supposed to see how we did that trick,” Wanda joked, wiggling her hips. I felt something bounce off the back of my head; I turned around to see (Y/N) glaring at me.
“You are so lucky our friend can think on her feet!” she scolded, continuing to glare at me. I dipped my head to hide the embarrassment blooming on my face; Loki, Clint, and Steve all sported a similar expression. I tensed again when Vision hopped off the stage before Wanda could turn around again, making a beeline for Herb.
“Oh, Sherbert! Yeah, this is my old mate, Sherbert. Stand up, Sherbert,” Vision bellowed, hurrying to where Herb stood, confused. “Say hello to the crowd!”
“It's Herbert, er- Herb,” he corrected, eyeing Vision suspiciously.
“Dear God,” Loki mumbled, scrubbing a hand over his face.
“Pipe down, Sherbie, and pick a card. Any card. Yeah, put it back in the deck. I'm not looking,” Vision urged, holding the deck of cards out. Herb pulled a card out, looks at it then placing it back in the deck so that Vision could shuffle them. “All right. Watch this,” Vision quipped, smiling. Vision pulled a card, showing it to Herb with a pleased look on his face. “Is this your card?”
           “Uh, no,” Herb mumbled.
“I beg to differ,” Vision slurred. Herb shook his head ‘no’ only making Vision irritated. Vision started pulling cards out, asking if it was Herb’s card, and none of them were; panic shot through me when Vision’s hand started moving faster, too fast for human eyes to keep up with. Vision made it to the last card, holding it out to Herb, clearly annoyed. “Is this your card?”
“Oh, it is!” Herb exclaims with a smile.
“Can’t get much worse, right?” Loki whispers, leaning his chair on two legs to get closer to me.
“Please don’t say that I’m begging you,” I groaned.
“They’re almost done, Buck. It can’t get much worse,” Steve tried to reassure me. I looked back at the stage to see Vision stumbling onto the stage.
“And now, for my next trick...” Vision reached up for his hat that was sitting turned over on the stage, missing the rabbit inside.
“Oh goodness me,” Wanda mumbled, watching her husband.
“Who stole my hat? Oh! Oh, stop that rabbit! I gotta pull a hat out of it!” Vision starts for the rabbit, but Wanda had beat him to it, holding the animal to her chest.
“Maybe we leave the poor bunny out of this one, shall we?” Wanda pleaded. Vision seemed to agree before his face lit up, and he bent down to pick up his hat.
“Well then, I will just have to pull this hat... out of myself,” Vision giggled, holding the hat in front of his stomach.
“Damnit, Loki,” I growled, bracing my elbows on my knees, cradling my head in my hands.
“In my defense, I didn’t see that coming,” Loki mumbled back. The audience gasped around us as Vision phased the hat through his body, yelling in triumph after doing it.
“How many more tricks do they have left?” Clint called over his shoulder.
“One,” (Y/N) ground out, her jaw clenched.
“And now, ladies and gentlemen, for our grand finale, I bring you, The Magnet of Crysteries!” Vision yelled, throwing his arms out.
“The Cabinet of Mysteries!” Wanda corrected, gesturing to the box that rolled onto the stage.
“Yeah, yeah. What she said. I will now make my wife... disappear.” Vision opened the doors to the cabinet, showing the crowd that it was empty but closed them before Wanda could get in; I watched her head drop slightly, sighing.
“Are you sure you don't want an audience volunteer named ‘My husband Ralph?’” Agnes called from the crowd. I shot a dirty look her way, glaring at the back of her head, noticing the rest of my friends shooting her similar looks; Wanda must have seen because she covered a laugh, turning her face away.
“No. Abracadabra!” Vision laughed, hitting a magic wand into the door, reminding me of a child.
           “Uh, sweetheart?” Wanda chuckled.
           “Yeah?”
           “Hi…”
“Oh,” Vision mumbled, looking back at the cabinet where Wanda was supposed to be. After a few seconds, people in the crowd started yelling, ‘what’s in the box?’ and I could visibly see the irritation on Wanda’s face. “Yeah, what’s in the box?” Vision asked Wanda, his face scrunching in confusion. Wanda took a deep breath, and they open the door to reveal another woman I didn’t remember meeting.
“Geraldine?” I heard Nat mumble, raising an eyebrow. Wanda, Vision, and the woman Geraldine bowed as the crowd cheered and clapped for them.
“Let’s get outta here!” Vision yells, running off the stage. Wanda closed her eyes momentarily, and then her gaze landed in our general direction when they opened again, glaring before hurrying after Vision.
“Up. Now,” (Y/N) growled, her gaze moving between Clint, Loki, Steve, and me. Nat stood next to her, her arms crossed over her chest as she took turns glaring at each of us. All four of us flinch before standing; our heads bowed as we followed the girls backstage. The six of us made it to the bottom of the steps in time to hear Vision talking.
“Ah, I'm not as funny without it, am I?” he grumbled, sounding disappointed.
“Not really,” Clint snorted, earning a smack on the back of the head from Nat. Clint yelped and quickly moving to rub the back of his head.
“Wanda,” (Y/N) called, hurrying up the steps with Nat on her tail. “We’re so sorry. The boys are idiots.”
“It’s okay,” Wanda sighed. “They couldn’t have known, but Vision should’ve known better.” Wanda shot Vision a look, and he dipped his head, trying to avoid the wrath of his wife. “Don’t blame them,” Wanda assured them, pulling them into a hug.
“Let’s get out of here before anyone says anything,” (Y/N) urged, shooing Vision towards the four of us. The eight of us clustered together, hurrying down the sideway, trying to avoid anyone catching us.
“You two, stop right there,” Dottie called from the stage, pointing at Wanda and Vision.
“Go!” Wanda whispered, shooing the rest of us. (Y/N) grabbed mine and Loki’s hands while Nat grabbed Steve and Clint, dragging us across the street, back towards our homes. The walk was eerily silent; Nat and (Y/N) dropped the hands they had and were walking with their arms linked. Steve, Loki, Clint, and I exchanged worried glances periodically, waiting for the explosion.
“You boys are lucky,” (Y/N) called over her shoulder. I searched her face for any trace of anger or irritation, and surprisingly I didn’t find any.
“It didn’t turn out that bad,” I tried, bracing for anything.
“It was quite funny,” Nat pointed out, looking at (Y/N).
“Okay, are we in trouble?” Loki asked, raising an eyebrow.
“No, Wanda’s not mad, so you boys got lucky,” Nat giggled.
“But you four need to pay more attention to your friend!” (Y/N) scolded, looking over her shoulder at the four of us. “He’s a machine; he doesn’t really know how to be human,” she whispered. The girls stop in front of the Barton house, turning to face us; the four of us shuffled in place, each mumbling an apology.
“Come on, birdie,” Nat giggled, reaching a hand for Clint. Clint rolled his eyes, shaking his head but clapped a hand on Loki and Steve’s shoulders and smacked my back before grabbing her outstretched hand.
“Later, boys,” Clint called, saluting us as Nat pulling him towards the house. When Nat and Clint disappeared, Steve, Loki, (Y/N), and I walked across the street, stopping between our homes.
“Let’s go home, trickster,” (Y/N) sighed, snaking an arm around his waist.
“See you tomorrow, boys,” Loki said with a slight nod. Steve and I waved before heading for our door; I gestured Steve through and closed the door behind me, slumping against it.
“That was a train wreck,” I sighed, scrubbing at my face.
“That’s an understatement,” Steve groaned, throwing his upper body over the back of the couch. “Thank god it’s over now.” I pushed off the door, my eyes raking over the curve of his behind as I walked towards him; I positioned my pelvis behind him, leaning into him.
“James,” his warning muffled by the couch cushions.
“Mm, you’re not helping,” I growled, resting my hands on his hips. Steve pushed himself up again, so his back was flush with my chest. “This is your fault,” I chuckled darkly into the shell of his ear.
“No, you’re just insatiable,” Steve snorted, relaxing into me. My eyes slid shut as I started to sway, wrapping my arms around his waist, moving Steve with me, humming against his throat as we moved together.
“You got me there,” I mumbled against his skin. We swayed to nonexistent music for a couple of minutes until I started to get greedy, pulling him tighter against me. Steve huffed out a laugh, spinning in my arms despite my protest.
“I need a shower; care to join?” Steve whispered, cupping my face so I would meet his eyes. I kept my eyes closed for a few seconds before groaning again, slowly opening them; I jumped back, bile burning at the back of my throat when I saw Steve’s face again. Steve wore an unfamiliar uniform with a large star on the chest, and his left eye was swollen almost shut, and there was a small cut below that eye which was bleeding. Another cut started at the corner of his mouth on the right side, his lip was busted, and a nasty cut curved over the top of his right eyebrow. ( x ) My chest constricted, making it harder to pull air into my lungs as my eyes flickered over his face; a crippling wave of panic and guilt tore through me. I choke on a sob as I stumbled into the wall next to the steps, tears clouding my vision. “Bucky?” Steve begging, stepping closer.
“No!” I cried, trying to move away from him. Somehow I knew this was my fault, I did this, I hurt Steve, but I had no idea what happened or what I did to him. I sobbed loudly again, sliding down the wall, covering my face with my hands; my body shook as I tried to make sense of the situation. I flinched when I felt Steve’s hand on my wrists.
“Bucky, please!” Steve begged, pulling on my hands. He managed to pull my hands away, and when I opened my tear-filled eyes to look at Steve, I blanched; Steve looked fine again, his skin was smooth with no dried blood, and he was wearing his dark sweater. I grabbed the sides of my head, crying out when a sharp pain exploded through my head; I cowered against the wall as the pain pulsed through my brain. “Bucky,” Steve cried, sounding desperate. As quickly as the pain started, it stopped, leaving me shaken; I tentatively looked up at Steve again, cringing at the tear stains on his cheeks.
           “Steve,” I croaked.
“What just happened?” Steve blurted, cupping my face.
“I-I don’t know,” I whispered, my voice cracking. “I’m scared, Steve.” Tears pooled in my eyes again, and I buried my face into Steve’s chest. We sat on the floor, clutching each other until I could talk again and try to explain everything to Steve, but the memory quickly faded.

you and islands
for the desert island square on my @tonystarkbingo card! (bingo details are below the cut!)
1.1k, Bruce Banner POV + Steve pining + domestic avengers
also on AO3
***
It starts with a suggestion from Colonel Rhodes.
Bruce had been deep in a discussion about motorcycle restoration with Steve when they noticed everyone gathering toward the center of the room, chattering as a group.
“Okay, let’s play a game,” Rhodey says suddenly, grinning as he downs the last of his beer and reaches for another.
Tony laughs, apparently pleased to see his best friend and his team so at ease with each other. Sure, the steady flow of alcohol probably helped, but still. Rhodey being home on leave combined with a rare lapse in missions and crises had inspired Tony to get everyone together at the penthouse; dinner and drinks with only one rule: no work talk.
That was easier for some than others, but that’s how these things go. Bruce isn’t exactly good at small talk, but so far he’s faring just fine, flanked by Steve and Natasha for most of the night. Tony, for his part, never seemed too far from Rhodey’s side, while still somehow managing to make sure everyone else was having a good time.
“Let’s play desert island,” Tony says, going along with Rhodey.
Rhodey groans. “Like every retreat in corporate America?”
Tony wraps an arm around his shoulders, smiling. “Have you so little faith in me, Sour Patch? It’ll be fun.”
Amid their good-natured arguing, Steve had gone quiet, Bruce realizes. He’s picking at the label on his beer bottle and doing a terrible job pretending he isn’t gazing forlornly at Tony and Rhodey.
“They’ve been friends for so long,” Bruce says now, following Steve’s gaze. He’s quiet enough that only Steve hears him, and he feels him inhale sharply.
“Hm? Oh, yeah, it’s nice,” Steve replies with a nod. He takes a sip of his beer, though they both know it won’t have the desired effect.
“Tony basically grew up with him, you know?” Bruce continues. “He was so young when they met. If anything was going to happen, you know, romantically, it probably would have by now.” It’s forward, probably, but that’s really the only way Bruce knows how to be.
Steve’s cheeks flush and he continues watching Rhodey and Tony argue about their game. “Oh. I mean, yeah, probably,” he says, eyebrows knitting together in affected confusion.
Poor guy. He’s got it bad, and what’s worse, he thinks no one notices.
“Brucie, Cap, come over here, we’re playing Desert Island!” Tony calls, interrupting them.
“They have such an ease about them,” Steve says, sighing as they make their way over to the rest of the group.
“Tony has that way about him. I mean, he never once made me feel bad about... the other guy, even in the early days.”
“Yeah, he does,” Steve says, something wistful slipping into his voice.
“You know, you could talk to him... tell him,” Bruce finds himself saying. Maybe it was the uncertainty on the otherwise confident Captain’s face, or the way his eyes always, always found their way to Tony, but Bruce wants to help.
Steve’s cheeks are definitely more red than pink now, and if Tony wasn’t so wrapped up in the logistics of their game, even he might notice the change. “Um. I have. Talked to him tonight, I mean,” Steve says.
Bruce chuckles. “That’s not what I meant,” he tells him pointedly. “Tell him,” he tries again.
Steve doesn’t have a chance to respond before Tonys talking again.
“Okay, we’re playing the not at all boring game Desert Island, thank you Rhodey Bear for suggesting it.” He blows him a theatrical kiss and Bruce swears he can feel Steve tense beside him.
“We’ll go over the rules since there are some Asgardians and centenarians here who’ve probably never played before,” Tony continues. This time Thor gets a wink and a smile and poor Steve just stares down at the floor.
“It’s simple. We just pick a category and you tell us what you’d bring with you to a desert island. Your absolute, can’t live without favorite things. We can start with an easy one: books.”
They go around painlessly, picking three books each, laughing and teasing each other at some of the choices.
Things get a little louder when they switch to movies, laughing at Clint, who mentions Weekend at Bernie’s and Tony, who picks Ferris Bueller’s Day Off as one of his.
“You guys have terrible taste,” Natasha says with a raised eyebrow.
“I’ll have you know that Ferris Bueller is a classic,” Tony argues. “Platypus, back me up here.”
Rhodey raises his hands. “No can do, Tones.” He turns to the group. “He made us go see that movie so many times in college that I can recite it, even now.”
“You loved it,” Tony insists.
“Alright, let’s make this a little more interesting,” Nat says, with a smirk that makes Bruce nervous. “You can only have one person here tonight on the island with you. Who is it?”
Next to him, Steve swallows loudly.
“Steve, you’re too quiet, you go first,” Nat encourages.
Steve freezes but recovers quickly. “Your idea, you go first,” he says smoothly.
“Fine,” she huffs. “Clint.” They high five, as if this choice is surprising to anyone. “Now you.”
“Tony.” Steve blurts out his answer so quickly that Bruce turns to the side to look at him. Judging by the mortified look on his face, though, Steve’s already regretting it.
It’s quiet for a beat, then Tony grins. “Alone on an island with Captain Beefcake? I can get on board with that,” he says, but Bruce notices a definite tint to his cheeks that hadn’t been there moments ago.
“Smooth,” Bruce says, turning to Steve with a smile. “Not quite what I meant, but...”
“I can’t believe I said that. Now he’ll think it’s just part of some stupid game,” Steve mutters in a hushed whisper.
Around them, Rhodey picks Tony, Thor says Steve, and Bruce and Clint both pick Natasha.
“Tony?” Nat says expectantly. “You’re up.”
“Uh...” Tony stammers uncharacteristically, eyes scanning the room. Bruce wonders if Steve notices how clearly nervous he is.
“Steve,” Tony says with a sense of finality.
Not Cap or Capsicle or Captain Handsom or even Rogers, Bruce can’t help but notice. Just Steve. There’s no fanfare, no winking or kisses blown, but Tony looks pleased to have said it aloud.
Bruce isn’t sure who looks more surprised, Steve or Rhodey, actually. Though Colonel Rhodes looks more offended than anything.
“Thirty years man, I see how it is,” Rhodey teases, but Tony just laughs, his eyes shining.
Beside him, Steve’s eyes snap forward to find Tony’s, meeting him with a tentative smile as Tony makes his way across the room.
“I think that’s my cue,” Bruce murmurs. He turns to remind Steve of his earlier advice, but Tony’s in front of them now, and Steve’s cheeks are pink once again. Bruce smiles and turns away. From the looks of it, they’d be just fine taking it from here.

In which I react to the trailer, bit by bit, because why not?
This post is long and image-heavy; sorry, dashboard.
Tumblr media
So first of all, the line that keeps running through my head is a line from a fic AU - Have Tesseract, Will Travel by WinterDusk - wherein Alternate Timeline Loki catches up with Post-Endgame Thor. It’s a glorious series and everyone should go read it right now.
“The Tesseract skids to a stop at Loki’s feet. Loki, not being entirely stupid, picks it up.”
Tumblr media
It’s such a good line that it should be, like, a narrative voiceover or something. But anyway.
Tumblr media
I have to say, I love seeing Loki’s “old” armour again, as opposed to what he was wearing in Ragnarok/IW (and what he died in, sorry, what?). His hair is definitely doing something inconsistent, but I’m not terribly bothered by it. (I’m glad his hair looks natural and a bit chaotic, as opposed to the stiff, awkward wigs.) And he’s landed in a desert - so, where has he ended up? On Earth? On another planet? Another galaxy? I guess we’ll find out.
Tumblr media
“You’re taking me somewhere to kill me.”
I think it’s interesting that Loki assumes that they’re going to try to kill him. He doesn’t look afraid, he doesn’t look surprised, just resigned: You’re going to kill me. I think it makes sense that this would be his reaction, in that he can’t fucking catch a break and he knows it. I’m interested to see how they managed to overpower him enough to get that collar around his neck, which I’m assuming is something that suppresses his magic. A fight scene?
Another note: the scar on his forehead has already healed up; depending on how quickly he heals, this could be a few days or a few weeks after the opening shot. Either he wasn’t captured right away, or he’s been sitting in a cell for awhile before they deign to bring him elsewhere.
Also, I didn’t recognize Owen Wilson right away. He looks like a kinda weird combination of Howard Stark and General Ross, lmao.
Tumblr media
Idk about the “you love to talk” line bc Loki doesn’t really like to talk - but, it’s also fair to say that the assumption could be made if one was basing his understanding of Loki on what we saw in Avengers (similar to how Tony says Loki’s a “full-tilt diva,” it doesn’t make it true, just makes it someone else’s perception).
I really like Loki’s “wtf” expression when he looks at Owen Wilson, though.
Tumblr media
Friendly reminder that Loki is the protagonist in his series, which means he’s probably going to going up against whatever big bad this is. Which means we get to see him in the context of being the one the audience is rooting for, instead of the villain.
Tumblr media
I think Loki looks the most beautiful here. Look at that face, that tiny little smirk, that luscious hair. Aw yisss. More of this Loki please (for aesthetic purposes).
Tumblr media
I like his expression here; reminds me a bit of when he’s brought in front of Odin in TDW, but a bit more uncertain - as if he’s thinking, I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m not going to let you know that I’m concerned. If that makes sense.
I also dig the music.
Tumblr media
I wonder if they’re showing Loki possible futures (considering he’s now created a new timeline) or if it’s strictly Loki-Prime’s life, and if it’s the latter, I am super curious to see how he reacts to the loss of Asgard and the subsequent run-in with Thanos. I hope he does not get shown his death because, butter-knife-stupidity aside, it was so brutal that showing it to him would just be cruel, I would think.
Tumblr media
This shot is interesting to me bc it’s from Loki’s POV - it’s what Loki sees when he realizes he’s surrounded. So where are these images coming from, anyway? Maybe the collar isn’t a magic thing, maybe it gives them the ability to see inside of Loki’s mind - or, to at least pull images from it. Idk. I like how Loki is still not showing much emotion, though; he’s just sitting there, arms folded, like okay, sure.
Tumblr media
Until here. What does Loki see that makes him close his eyes and turn away? He looks annoyed, he looks exhausted, he looks fed up. My first thought was that he was turning away at the shot of the Avengers - the reminder that he lost, or that he failed. Maybe Owen Wilson was saying something taunting about it. But really, it could be anything. It’s a really interesting moment, though, because it’s a genuine reaction from Loki and I’m hoping that it implies he feels some kind of way about New York and perhaps will talk about it - like that he lost on purpose, or he’ll mention Thanos, or something. Again, Loki being the protagonist means that there’s a ton of potential for really getting Loki’s side of things, and if they’re going through his memories, then we might get to see Loki talk about those memories.
Tumblr media
This looks like Loki’s gone from being the TVA’s prisoner to working for them, which is interesting, but not entirely unexpected, if we’re to assume that the TVA’s interests lie in defeating the hooded big bad from before and they need Loki to do it. I’m also curious if they never intended to capture him long-term at all but, in fact, sought him out because of his magic/skills/etc in order to help them. That would also make sense - that it’s more of a recruiting thing than a punishment thing - considering that Loki isn’t even the one who fucked up the timeline to begin with and that the Avengers are the ones responsible for that.
Tumblr media
We love a flippy-knife Loki, don’t we?
Tumblr media
Post-apocalyptic future? Potential of what could have happened if Loki (and, by extension, Thanos) had won? Or an alternate timeline altogether? I have no idea. Loki looks so smol though, all alone in the ruins.
Tumblr media
I really hope this is a wig and Loki didn’t cut his hair, bc this just looks like Tom with short black hair, lmao. Like the Night Manager with a Loki smirk. It’s not bad, I just don’t care for it. I wonder how Asgard will react when Loki shows up looking like that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Action shots! Loki doing stuff! Fighting! Random twirly girl! I’m here for all of the action sequences and I’m not sorry.
Tumblr media
Imagine being that girl. Hoo.
Tumblr media
Everyone was talking about Sam jumping out of the plane without a parachute and haha, another one like Steve, but just look at Loki’s bad ass soaring through the clouds. Also, I am a loser, but the one inconsistency in the “Loki is DB Cooper” theory - for me - is that I thought it was night time and raining when DB jumped. But, that’s just me.
Also, has Loki always pronounced Heimdall like that? HeimDAAALL, like with a hard A? Or is that also just me?
Tumblr media
And there’s the Bifrost, pulling short-haired DB Cooper Loki to Asgard.
Tumblr media
(That little window for the Falcon trailer came up and I couldn’t minimize it, sorry.)
I have no idea what is going on here, but I have to say, that gravelly come on! What did you expect? is all kinds of pleasing to me. I have always loved Tom’s deep Loki voice. I am assuming this is something from the comics or that it’s an alternate reality Loki or something like that, but again, context matters and this was really the only part of the trailer that (the first time) made me go, uh can we not? Who knows.
And there we are. My honest opinion is that, while some of it seems questionable, it overall seems kind of promising to me? I think that if you read between the lines, so to speak, and pick up on all of Loki’s little tells and micro-expressions, what we’ll probably end up seeing is a combination of Thor 1/TDW Loki with a side of Avengers and some Ragnarok-flavored sprinkles. I also think that the trailer has probably sliced up and served the juiciest bits to appeal not just to Loki’s core fanbase but to the Ragnarok fans and to the casual MCU fans who may want to tune in for fun.
Again, we’re getting approximately two full-length movies worth of a story in which Loki is the protagonist. And I’ll just say it: my initial overall reaction was that I liked it. I’m apprehensive, but I’m hopeful. Look at it this way: nothing in this series will be worse than what we already had to endure in Infinity War.
So, yeah. We’ll see what happens, but I think it’ll be okay and, even if it’s not? Well, on the bright side, there’s more footage and content to inspire brilliant fanworks (fics, music vids, art, etc), which is just the new life that needs to be breathed into the Loki fandom right now. In my opinion.

Peacemaker: All the DC Heroes and Villains in that HBO Max Trailer
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
John Cena’s Peacemaker was the breakout star of this summer’s The Suicide Squad, so the post-credits scene that served as a bridge between the movie and his upcoming show was an absolute delight. And now we’ve got a trailer! As part of DC’s FanDome festivities, we got our first extended look at Peacemaker, Cena’s new show, directed largely by The Suicide Squad director James Gunn, and carrying over several characters from the movie. And as usual, we dug through the trailer with a fine toothed comb to see what we could figure out.
Haven’t watched it yet? Well, turn it up and enjoy the hair metal-y goodness first, then we’ll break it all down for you…
OK, ready? Here’s all the important DC characters we found…
Emilia Harcourt and Clemson Murn
The teaser wastes no time jumping into introductions. The first characters we meet are the team who snatched Peacemaker from his doom at the end of The Suicide Squad: Clemson Murn (played by Chukwudi Iwuji), Emilia Harcourt (played by Jennifer Holland), and John Economos (Steve Agee). Murn, running the operations, is a new character to the DCEU.
Meanwhile, we’re introduced to Harcourt kicking a bunch of ass in a bar, which tracks for this ARGUS agent turned Task Force X operations and logistics officer. Harcourt is a relatively new addition to the comics, first introduced in the DC Rebirth-era Suicide Squad book. She appears to be largely the same here and in The Suicide Squad as she was when Rob Williams and Jim Lee created her.
John Economos
That’s not true of Economos. The Economos we see in the film and here is another member of the operations team running Peacemaker. In the comics, he was one of the original administrators of Task Force X, created by the original Suicide Squad team of John Ostrander and Luke McDonnell for the first issue of the series. There, he was the warden of Belle Reve, the brutal prison that housed the Squad. He worked closely with Waller before eventually losing faith in her ability and walking away from his life’s work all together. So…good call?
Leota Adebayo
The final non-super member of the Peacemaker team we’re introduced to is Danielle Brooks’ Leota Adebayo. She doesn’t appear to be modeled on anyone from the comics, but Taystee was pretty great on Orange is the New Black and POV characters do tend to have a lot of humor channeled through them in shows like this, so it’s a safe bet she’ll be a lot of fun.
Vigilante
It also looks like the team from Belle Reve and Peacemaker will be joined by a new “hero”: Vigilante. Freddie Stroma is the actor under the mask, playing Adrian Chase, a character created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez in the pages of New Teen Titans, and promptly spun off into his own book. Chase was a New York City DA who turned crime-fighting anti-hero after his family was killed by criminals.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Vigilante make his way to the small screen. However, unlike the Vigilante we saw on Arrow, this one looks like they cut out a George Perez drawing and put it on the screen. This costume is amazing.
Peacemaker’s Dad
It’s probably for the best that they’re not directly lifting the story of Peacemaker’s father from the comics. Peacemaker’s father had his background dug into as part of the first arc on his comic back in the late ’80s, where Paul Kupperberg and Tod Smith made Peacemaker’s old man a retired Nazi concentration camp warden who killed himself in front of his son, setting young Christopher on a path towards becoming a superhero.
Here he’s just a mean old shitbag. But played by Robert Patrick! Who was also the T-1000. Aww man.
Judomaster
We see Vigilante and Peacemaker in fairly regular conflict with one guy in particular: Judomaster. Nhut Le plays this master of hand to hand combat. You might know him as the guy who didn’t get an analogue in Watchmen – he was, like Peacemaker, the Question, Captain Atom, Nightshade, and Blue Beetle, an import from Charlton Comics when DC bought the company in the mid 1980s.
The original comics version was Rip Jagger, a World War II veteran taught judo by the rescued daughter of a master of the form who returned home to fight crime. That’s pretty dated by now, so expect the show’s version to be heavily modified.
Who is the Hair Metal Woman?
We also see someone who looks like they belong on top of an IROC-Z in a Warrant video throwing Peacemaker through a wall (and later getting zapped by something in his helmet). We don’t have quite enough to go on to try and figure out who she is, but I’m going to place a small wager on Maxima, Princess of Almerac, because her bit in the ‘80s would likely be hilarious in the hands of someone like Gunn. Foe example, Maxima routinely traveled to Earth to try and convince Superman to become her royal consort. Don’t tell me Cena wouldn’t kill with that.
Senator Royland Goff
And finally, the team’s “first target”, Senator Royland Goff. Goff doesn’t appear to be based on anyone in the comics, but I will admit that googling “DC evil senator” shoots back an awful lot of results at the moment.
Eagle Hug
Aww, at least Peacemaker gets a good hug from that giant eagle.
Peacemaker premieres on HBO Max on January 13, 2022.

The second you said that Steve’s eyes were wide open.
“Agent Y/L/N, you mean to tell me that you and Sergeant Barnes have not only been sleeping together during your deployment here, but he also managed to get you pregnant?’ The general interjects furiously, but still keeping his cool as you’re clearly having a meltdown.
“How long have you known?” Steve asks, ignoring the other man’s pressing questions.
“A few days,” You say, trying to calm yourself down, “I had morning sickness the past few days, and…”
You unbutton your blazer revealing a small baby bump.
“... I’m already showing. Nurse Linda decided that was the only possible reason. I wanted to break the news to B-Buck…:”
You trail off once more, remembering that your lover is now gone, and the tears begin to fight their way back.
“Hey, Y/N, it’s going to be okay,” Steve pulls you back into a warm embrace, “We’re going to send you home, so you can be with your family. I’ll be with you once the war’s over.”
“I’m afraid we can’t do so just yet.” The general interrupts once more, “I hate to make matters worse, but the mission failed and we need someone to go back into the village and gather intel on where Zola might be now. Agent Y/N is the only one capable of the job.”
Steve instantly objects, “General she can’t-”
“No. I will.” You step away from Steve, “Bucky would want me to. One final mission… For him.”
“Thank you, Agent,” says the general, “We’ll get you briefed tomorrow. Get your rest.”
“Oh my god, Y/N, I’m so sorry. I never knew.” Sam saus wholeheartedly.
You realize you’re tearing up at the memory as Bucky shifts closer to you and pulls you into him. You feel his metal arm and recall the times he made love to you with all flesh. How he loved to put his warm hands on your cheeks, and the only chill you had was from the air. Before you both were turned into monsters.
“Sorry if it’s too invasive, but what happened to your child?”
Words became tricky.
“Well Hydra was expecting me back in that village, and when I arrived they captured me. Which was the start of all this for me…”
Everything is cold when you come to consciousness. You open your eyes to a dimly lit room, and you’re on what feels like an operating table. Above you hangs a towering contraption holding a plethora of needles containing a rainbow of chemicals. To your right is a side table adorned in unwashed tools, and something wrapped into an extremely bloody towel.
You try to open your mouth, but then all the pain sets in.
It feels like you’re on fire everywhere. Yet the center of it all seems to be your pelvis. Similar to period cramps, but nothing like you’ve ever felt before. But how could it be your time of the month? You’re pregnant for christ’s sake.
“Ah you’re awake.” A thick German accent greets you.
“W-where am I? What happened?” You try to remember what happened before you lost consciousness. All that comes to you is returning to the small mountain village for your mission, walking into the hostile you were to rest in, and entering a room full of soldiers… All with a certain symbol on their chest.
Hydra.
“Why am I here? What do you want from me?” You ask, now with all the pieces put together.
“Let me introduce myself first, Agent Y/L/N, my name is Dr. Zola. But, you may have known that from your previous mission.”
How did he know about that?
“You might be confused as to how I know that, but trust me, Miss Y/N, I know everything about you. We’ve been tracking you since you were deployed to Austria. Someone as talented as you will have a perfect place in our team. Along with your loverboy of course.”
“Bucky? How do you know that? What do you want with him?”
Mr. Barnes is one of the finest shooters the American Army has ever seen, and with you, the best spy for the allies, and the serum your golden boy has, you two will be unstoppable. Hydra history will be made with you two. World history will be changed with you two. It only helps that you two are romantically involved.”
“Were romantically involved,” You almost choke, “I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Bucky is gone.”
“Oh, on the contrary, for we took the sergeant before Cap’s boys could find him. He lost his arm due to the fall, but that’s only a minor setback. Similar to yours. Easy fixes.
“Bucky’s alive?! Where is he?!” You were willing to do anything just to see that he’s okay, “Wait, what setback did I have?”
“The embryo within you, but we already handled that while you were knocked out. It won’t be an issue now, or ever again.”
“You aborted my child!?” You wanted to scream and thrash, but you were in so much pain, and you just now noticed that you were held down by restraints.
“You are now unable to have children, but there’s no need to worry! You’ll never have the need to.”
Right then you hear a piercing scream. From a man.
Bucky.
“WAS THAT BUCKY!?” Suddenly you felt nothing but rage course through you. You thrashed and somehow pulled off the restainted keeping you at the table.
You lunged toward the doctor as he began to yell.
“GUARDS! THE SERUM IS ALREADY WORKING ON HER! HELP!”
You reached him and grabbed his neck, closing up his airway.
“What serum!? Where is Bucky!?”
Before he could choke out an answer, two strong men grabbed you and yanked you back. In a wave of anger, you elbow one square on the nose, then turn to face the other one. You had no clue where this strength had come from, but you were ready to use it to its fullest.
You start at the second guard, but he quickly dodges and pulls out some sort of weapon and flips a switch at its base. The tool began surging with electricity and before you could react, he stuck you down onto the ground.
“Oh, Miss Y/N, you have so much potential, but don’t worry, soon you’ll be the soldier you were destined to be.” You heard Zola say before a needle was stuck in your arm and everything went black.
It hurt to revisit this, but some part of you knew you needed to tonight. Bucky just pulled you tighter and you are comforted by his strong scent.
“Do you remember your first time seeing Bucky?” Sam asks, cautious of his words.
“No.” You answer, “I went through the serum process faster than Bucky because they started the first time he was kidnapped, so I was on so many drugs that’s all I remember until my first missions.”
“I remember the first time I saw her.” Bucky pipes up. He’s been silent recently, and you were worried about him, but you both trusted Sam enough with these memories. “It was not long after she woke up in the facility for the first time, and it was the first time I broke out of Hydra’s control.”
… Bucky’s POV…
“Хорошая работа, солдат, теперь добей его.” Good work soldier, now finish him, one of the officers ordered me to do.
He had put up a good fight, for a normal man, but as The Asset, he was no challenge for me. I don’t know who this man is, but he’s my mission, and I must finish. I draw my gun and aim at his limp body on the floor, struggling to flee.
Right as I’m about to pull the trigger, a side door opens to reveal two officers dragging a limp body of a woman across the hall.
“Restrain her and check her vitals.” The Doctor orders from the room the trio exited from.
This woman looked familiar, but how would I know? I have no family, for I am The Asset. All I know is war, but this woman brings me a sense of peace. Just looking at her makes me feel… warm.
“Y/N?” I hear myself mutter. I don’t know where that came from, but it feels right. Y/N. How beautiful. Like her.
Wait. I am not The Asset. I am James Barnes. I’m Bucky. Why am I here? Why is she here!? She should be back at camp.
Snapping out of my thoughts, I realize all the officers in the room are charging at me.
“Удержи его! Он помнит!” Restrain him! He’s remembering!
Before I could fight any of the approaching officers, all I felt was electricity. Losing all feeling in my body, I collapse to the ground and get dragged off.
“протри его. начать сначала” Wipe him. Start over.
After harrowing stories and some lighter topics, Sam retired to his own house. It left you and Bucky in a bittersweet state, for you were revisiting all the nights of torture and torment Hydra conducted between the two of you, but you were thankful you were now safe, secluded, and satisified.
You were sat up in bed with Alpine on your lap reading To Kill A Mockingbird (Peter Parker recommended it to you after he read it for English class), with the subtle sounds of Bucky brushing his teeth coming from the bathroom.
“Y/N?” Bucky is now leaning against the door frame of the bathroom.
“Yes?” You put in your bookmark and set the novel to the side.
“Why did you go on that mission for me?” There’s a tremble in his voice, as if he’s been holding onto that question for eternity.
“Something within me I guess. I was so devastated about losing you, but every part of me was telling me to go on that mission.”
“But…” He chokes on his words. “You could’ve been saved. You could’ve gone home and settled down, like you wanted. Like we always wanted.”
“Oh, Bucky,” You pull the covers, and Alpine, off and go to him, “How could I? I would’ve never looked at another man the same. How could I? When I lost you, I lost a piece of myself. And Hydra would’ve found me anyways. They were tracking me just like Zola said.”
You pull him into you and hold his head against your shoulder. Bucky was significantly taller than you and extremely broad and muscular, but when he needed to be held he became small and fragile. It hurt your heart to see him like this, but you were there for him for whatever he needed.
The two of you stood in silence for what felt like hours just basking in each other’s warmth. Until Bucky spoke up again.
“Do you miss our child?”
“Everyday.”
You were the happiest you’ve ever been when Linda told you you were pregnant. Nothing made you happier than the idea of settling down with the man of your dreams in the suburbs with a couple of kids and a white picket fence. You were itching to tell Bucky the news, but once you got the news that Bucky didn’t make it back from the mission, all you had left of him was your child. You swore to raise them to be just like their father, but Hydra took your ability away to have children away… Just like they took away your Bucky.
When the government gifted you this cabin and land, you had to make some agreements. You weren’t allowed to leave the country without notifying the military, you had to attend monthly psychological evaluations, and some other precautionary procedures. The one that broke your heart the most was that you weren’t allowed to adopt or foster a child because the government feared you could train them to become the next generation of Hydra killers. Just another precaution.
A precaution that made your heart twist.
You were taken out of your deep thought with the feeling of fur rubbing against your ankles. Looking down you see your pristine white fur baby crossing through your legs, causing you both to laugh.
“Thank the Lord the government didn’t stop us from having kids with four legs.” You joke, trying to make light of the haunting memories. Bucky chuckles and picks Alpine up.
“At least he can’t talk back like a child.” He adds.
You and Bucky lay in your tent stark naked huddling for each other's warmth under a thin blanket. Breathless after your late night “fonduing”.
“What do you want after the war is over?” Bucky asks.
“To start a family.” You answer with ease, “I know I’m a military girl, but I want to settle down and have kids.”
“I do too. Not that many people know that because I’m such a flirt.” He chuckles.
“Quite the reputation you must have back home, Barnes.”
He pulls you closer, “But as soon as this war is over, I’m taking you to the suburbs and we’ll get a nice place with a fence and a garden. And have kids.”
“One boy and one girl?” You ask.
“Perfect. Can we name the girl Winnifred? After my mother.”
“We can call her Winnie for short.”
“I knew you were perfect for me.” He sighs happily, “That’s all the family I need. You, me, and a couple of tikes.”
“Maybe a dog too.” You add.
Maybe this is all the family you need.

Five years have passed, we pretend to be happy... well a part of us is so we've been building, but we still haven't been able to get quite a replenishment.
While when we had to run away after the Civil War, we had a stable and happy life, although I could see how Steve missed being Captain America, he cared more than anyone found because he wanted me and our baby to be taken hostage, luckily no one suspected him as he was just two months old.
Steve and I had married a few weeks before the mission in Lagos, although perhaps misfortunes had begun since the HYDRA uprising, I'm not sure.
I can't forget the day... The day our lives were ruined again, obviously, it wasn't Bruce's fault that he called us, we agreed that I'd stay in the house looking after our little daughter, so I had no idea what was going on.
When I heard the commotion outside I peeked out, while my daughter was sleeping when I turned to her, I no longer saw her in her crib, a girl of almost two years couldn't go very far, right?
I started looking for her everywhere, when I moved the shelter of the crib I saw a cluster of ashes, what was going on?
I called Steve, something wasn't right, I didn't understand anything, and did we have to run away again?
"I'll be home soon, first I have something to fix, everything will be fine, I promise.”
That's all Steve told me before I could ask anything else.
The next few hours were eternal, I couldn't find my daughter anywhere, I turned on the TV, there was no sense the news they were given, how was it possible that people were disappearing?
If what the news was saying was true... So... my daughter was disappeared too?
Thousands of questions appeared in my head, Steve promised me he would fix what was going on, I tried to call him several times, but he didn't answer, he didn't have the slightest idea of what to do.
Steve came in the night, I started asking him a lot of things.
"What about Sarah?” He asked me.
"I don't know... she disappeared... As... I do not know... Steve tell me what's going on..., “I asked sobbing.
Steve was silent, I couldn't understand why he wouldn't tell me what had happened.
“Please don’t lie to me again, I can’t take it.”
“Thanos... did what he... he wanted to eliminate half the universe...”
“Eliminate half the universe?” I questioned.
It seemed crazy what Steve was saying to me, nothing made sense, all I wanted was my baby back.
"Yes, he got the stones of infinity and with a simple click he achieved it, he did not... I don't know how to fix it, forgive me, I couldn't...
I hugged him and we were crying for hours, the next month we tried with all our might to get everything back to normal, but we didn't succeed, nothing worked.
Adapting was difficult, it took us a while, and however, three years later we had another baby.
I was terrified, I didn't know how to tell her about the pregnancy, I didn't even know if she was ready.
"Doll, you've been aloof last week, what's going on?” He asked me.
“You’re were broken-hearted and the world was, too. And I was beginning to lose my grip. And I have always hold it loosely, but this time I admit, I felt it start to slip.”
"I don't get it...”
"We're going to have another baby," I confessed.
Contrary to the reaction I expected, Steve smiled.
"Okay, only this baby isn't going to impersonate our Sarah, we're going to have to buy new stuff.”
Since Natasha found out she comes to visit us at least once a week, it's the only one we have contact with after they returned from that trip in space... everyone broke up, I thought it wouldn't be that different, it just looked like we'd never been a team or anything.
I guess it's because it was already having years since we were, maybe we never were and we didn't realize it, maybe we were just co-workers or just people who met each other.
What we didn't count on Scott's arrival, how it would change our lives completely, though.
"Are you sure you want to stay? Steve asked me.
"Yes, someone has to take care of Becca, just... I hope...”
"We'll fix everything, I promise.”
Those hours that passed seemed eternal, Becca was asleep while I was still immersed in my thoughts.
As soon as Steve came back, I felt calmer.
"What happened? “ I asked.
"We have all the stones, now Tony will work on a gauntlet so we can get everything back to normal.”
"Sounds good, but um...”
“But?”
"Becca... is it going to disappear?” My voice was trembling.
In short, I didn't want to lose one daughter to get another one back.
"No, what we have experienced is not going to be erased, it will simply return to all the living beings that disappeared through the Snap....”
“And those who died as a result of the Snap?” I questioned.
Steve kept thinking for a few minutes, I wasn't sure if they had contemplated those cases.
"Only those who went for the Snap, the others did not.
I don't know what we should expect now, but if I knew something had happened to Steve.
"Stevie... do you have anything to tell me?”
I was afraid of the answer, but it was better to know. He took air before he spoke.
"On the time heist, something didn't go as planned on our 2012 visit, we had to go to 1970 and...”
"And I saw Peggy," he confessed.
I felt like I couldn't breathe, now I was afraid more than before to ask, Steve was going to abandon us?
I didn't know what to ask, I opened my mouth, but no sound came out.
“She found her right partner and I found mine.”
"I don't understand...”
"You are my right partner, the family we have formed, I love you so much Y/N.”
"I love you too.”
"We should start fixing another room, we'll soon have Sarah with us.”
"Sure...”
I was still trying to process what he told me.
"Doll, seriously you have nothing to worry about, it's you and me against the world, remember?”
I nodded, it was what we said whenever there was a problem and some people thought we couldn't get over it.
"We will be very happy, I promise.”
"Is something wrong?” Steve asked me as he gave me my drink.
"Nothing, I just like to see our daughters playing together," I replied.
Steve sat next to me and watched the scene. He was right, now we're very happy.
