Prompt 27 - Expecto Patronum

Fifth year was turning out to be more challenging than Sirius had anticipated. There was a monstrous amount of homework, and the wand work had amped up a few notches.

He was having particular trouble casting a patronus. He was sick of chanting ‘Expecto Patronum’ and having nothing happen. Not even a wisp of a patronus emerged from his wand.

James had been one of the first to cast the spell successfully. Of course, he had. That boy was happiness incarnate. His stag patronus was so blindingly bright the class had had to look away.

“You’ll get it,” James wrapped his arm around Sirius’s shoulders, giving him a quick squeeze. “You’ve had a shit time recently. It’s bound to be hard to get a happy memory to feel happy after what your family did to you. Just keep trying. It’ll come eventually.”

James was only trying to make it better, but he made Sirius feel terrible. He was trying so hard not to let everything that had happened at Christmas affect him. But how could it not?

His own parents had cast the cruciatus curse on him repeatedly until he was senseless. He was lucky he’d been able to escape.

“Expecto Patronum, Expecto Patronum, Expecto Patronum.” He kept chanting over and over, concentrating on memories of his friends.

He was about to give up when, as he was chanting the spell the last few times, Remus looked up from his book and smiled at him. Suddenly, a huge ghostly dog erupted from the tip of his wand and bounded around the classroom. It came back to him and sat at his feet with its tongue lolling out the side of its mouth.

He had no idea what he’d been thinking when he cast it, but whatever it was, it was powerful.

Expecto Patronum

Sirius struggled casting a Patronus. First, it was because his home life had been so difficult. Then, after Azkaban…well, the happy memories were muted and grey.

But now? Maybe, he thought as the ocean lapped at his toes behind their new house.

The first time he did it after Azkaban, he’d needed Remus’s touch to ground him and had been surprised when it was Moony who'd erupted from his wand rather than Padfoot. But it made sense. Moony had always been his protector to it stood to reason that his Patronus would match that.

He hadn’t tried to cast one while he was stuck in Grimmauld Place. What was the point? He’d been in such a dark headspace that it never really seemed possible.

But he was free of that place for a second time.

He closed his eyes, listening to the waves. He pictured the day he and Remus moved into this house. The first home they’d had together since before. He pictured Harry helping them set up the house.

He took a deep breath. “Expecto Patronum!”

The silvery wolf surged out of his wand, and ran into the waves, circling back to nudge at his leg.

Sirius smiled.

Not me trying to beat depression and my old friend burn out by drawing some chibi Harry Potter drarry shit because it's my comfort characters and ship and they kept me functioning for the last 6 months (thank you all fan artists and writers!).

Very important HC: Draco paints Harry's nails so they match cause you won't catch him wearing gryffindor's colors and couple shirt are too plebeian for him and I'll die on this hill.

Who says Harry isn’t powerful?

Lily’s letter to Sirius mentioned Harry zooming around on his toy broomstick at a year old. I’d say displaying magic at that age is impressive. Plus going on to become the youngest Seeker in a century.

Killing the Basilisk. At age 12! With help from Fawkes, but still! Godric Gryffindor level of combat skills.

Conjuring a stag Patronus at age 13 to fend off a hundred Dementors, when most adult wizards couldn’t even cast an incorporeal one. His ability caused quite an uproar at the Wizengamot later on.

Surviving and WINNING the Triwizard Tournament at age 14. Had help here and there, yes, but Harry walked onto each battlefield alone.

Using Protego masterfully by age 15 that it reflected Snape’s Legilimens spell right back at him. Casting a Shield Charm powerful enough to expand and fill the Great Hall. Many adult wizards have trouble casting a sufficient Protego.

Leading Dumbledore’s Army and improving their DADA skills to significantly above average. Fighting courageously and sustaining the least physical damage at the Department of Mysteries.

Succesfully casting Imperio and completely resisting it. Successfully casting Crucio on his third attempt. Unforgivable curses take powerful magic, said Snape.

And finally, Hogwarts studies - yeah, maybe not top in nearly every subject like Hermione, but getting all Es on exams he wasn’t interrupted during and an O in DADA, outperforming his best friend Ron who grew up in a pure-blood wizarding household. Harry was raised by Muggles. Not the same starting point, and yet Harry ended up slightly surpassing Ron academically with that Outstanding score.

Recognized powerful characters - Marauders generation, certain Death Eaters, the professors - they are at least 20 years Harry’s senior. Being defeated by them does not, at all, make him mediocre. I’m sure that by his 30s, he’d have greatly increased in magical aptitude and solidified his status as one of the most powerful wizards of his generation.
