Writing Tips: Dreams As Plot Devices
Dreams are:
A window in a character’s subconscious, a backdrop for the character to work out their thoughts, confront inner demons, and make key decisions.
A medium for character development.
A setting for non-status-quo-breaking subplot.
A way for a psychic character to communicate behind the scenes.
As a story device, dreams can:
Foreshadow: Via symbolism, dreams can hint at future plot twists or represent underlying themes.
Advance Plot: By having characters receive crucial information or guidance through their dreams.
Provide Character Insight: By revealing subconscious desires and fears, dream can have emotional impact.
Develop Character: As a character struggles, learns a lesson, and comes to a realization, they can grow emotionally, despite being in a dream.
The Dream Sequence:
Get knocked out via injury, poison, possession, exhaustion, being overwhelmed, or sleep.
Experience symbolic confrontations in dreamland.
Conclude something formative and develop character.
Wake up better than before.
In Dreamland:
The character meets a variety of other real or imagined characters that embody their conflicts or different sides of their inner struggle:
Supportive characters may take the form of known mentors or parent figures
Confrontational characters may take the form of known antagonists
The character may meet a past self or dark reflection.
The character struggles with their inner problems until they reach an epiphany by:
Talking things out with manifestations of their inner conflict.
Being contacted psychically by someone from the real world.
Fighting with a hostile entity within their mind.
Completing an adventure.
Whilst Unconscious:
Being among friends: good opportunity to reveal how much(or little) the characters care for their unconscious friend. They have to protect their fallen friend in the meantime.
Among enemies: not so good. Unconscious character will be taken to one of villain’s lairs and imprisoned.
Upon Waking:
The character learns a lesson they were previously trying to resolve and wake with character development.
The character may even wake with new powers or new mastery over existing powers.

Okay, guys. I just woke up and i had an amazing dream and I need you to tell me whether or not I should make a fic out of it.
My dream basically starts out in the woods and I stumble upon a big mansion and I decide to go in bc dream me is stupid and needs directions. I suddenly get slammed against the wall by a huge, buff vampire(and he's hottt) and he asks what I'm doing there. Of course I pull out the "I got lost" card and he goes;"stupid girl. You're lucky." and I'm like "why?" and he says "it's not feeding time yet."
At this point dream me is completely aroused bc she has no morals. Vampire guy decides to be nice and cut a deal with me. If I become his servant for a year then he can give me whatever the fuck I want. I'm obviously like "hell yeah" even though i don't fully trust him and he could be one of those villains that say they're gonna give you something at the end but then just kill you(although I don't really care whether I'm dead or not. Pretty indifferent towards that)
So I start going out and gathering people for a riot against the evil that's in the mansion in the woods. A big ass group of people is like "hell yeah, let's kill him!" so I guide them to his mansion and then i stay in a corner as I watch hot vampire guy absolutely devour them and hunt them down (when i tell you... He was so attractive while doing that...)
So this cycle kinda repeats a few times bc he feeds once a month or once every two months and after six months we've grown kinda close and we regularly have conversations and stuff.
After the seventh month and the fifth feeding, he comes to me and asks what it is that I want as a reward and I boldly go. "Well, you could kill me at any point. I don't care about that, though. The only thing I care about is not dying a virgin." (I'm not a virgin irl, but for some reason dream me is??)
So hot vampire guy looks at me all flabbergasted and goes "ok well, I'm probably not gonna kill you bc you feed me, but I'm sure you could just take one of the humans you bring to me and...use him."
And dream me is absolutely deranged and has no filter, so she just says; "No, I don't want one of them. I want you."
Hot vampire guy is flabbergasted but then he's like.... "Are you sure?" and obviously I say yes.
You can imagine what happens next.
(I'm so sorry, this was worded in such a stupid way, but I just need to know if y'all want me to write this or not. Also, if you want me to write this, please send ideas for his name bc I never got to hear his name in my dream.)

The biggest thing I’ve learned to help me enjoy writing is patience.
I will go weeks without writing anything, and then write a poem on my way to work or while waiting for food to reheat. And while I will still sit and feel sad about the days not spent writing, it is because I took those moments in the last year and a half to write when it struck me, I have a collection of poetry.
If I hadn’t spent time not writing, I would not have lived enough to write. The time in between is important.
One day I do still hope to have nothing to do but spend my days writing everything that passes through my brain. But if that day does not come for many more decades, I will cherish the moments when inspiration strikes.

me: this is a background character who's in one scene, has two lines, and is completely irrelevant to the rest of the story. i am going to stop obsessing over what to name him and use the random name generator on behindthename.com. i am going to accept the first thing it gives me and move the fuck on.

New idea: instead of writing the fic, you come over to my house and I tell you the entire plot while I pace my tiny kitchen. There’s a cup of tea, warm in your hands. The words don’t stop and the affection never leaves your expression.

around a year ago I had an incredibly realistic dream where I was hiking and stumbled off a cliff. I managed to grab into a ledge, but I was hyper aware that eventually I would lose hold of it and fall to my death. I just sat there holding the ledge for a while thinking about everything I was never able to do, the conversations I never had, and how badly I wanted to live. Eventually I came to terms with my untimely death and accepted that there was nothing I could change, and it wasn't really okay, but it would have to be okay, and I'd had a good life. If nothing else, I was glad for the life I had been able to have. I wanted my last thoughts to be peaceful. I was about ready to let go when my family came along and rescued me. Some other stuff happened after that. Then I woke up and let me tell you I had a Bad Day. How are you even supposed to act normal after that.

“One weird, silver lining positive from the WGA's strike has been a sense of calm over a reality that has plagued me with anxiety for years — the fact that despite having a great agent, manager, and lawyer, despite having been in hundreds of rooms with top execs and producers, despite having pitched countless networks, and despite having sold multiple pilots and pitches, I still work in food and bev. For so long, it felt like such an embarrassment in so many ways because it felt like I was the only one who was biding time in between sales with a side hustle. When I would tell people at work that I wrote television, they'd look at me like I had ten heads, or like I was delusional. They couldn't IMAGINE someone who *actually* wrote television would also be asking them what temp they wanted their salmon.
But the reality is, TV money goes fast, especially when it's just a pilot sale. And if shit doesn't get picked up to series, that money only lasts for so long. Being responsible meant swallowing my pride and keeping a job that was more consistent and steady but also gave me the ability to take pitch meetings, to write on my down time, do rewrites, answer e-mails, and take notes calls.
And for so long I thought I was a minority in that regard. Like I had done something wrong to not be successful enough to rely solely on my career as a writer.
Yet the strike has pushed SO many stories to the forefront of writers doing the exact same thing I've done, GOOD writers, great writers, writers who shit I watch all the time, whose names I instantly recognize, whose reputations in this industry precede them. So when the studios leaked that the goal was to bleed writers dry, to make it so we lost our homes, I had to laugh. Writers like me will literally do anything to keep the dream of writing alive. It's in us. It never goes away, no matter how many steaks you server, how many martinis you mix, how many cold calls you make, how many Uber passengers you pick up, how many pizzas you have to deliver. We always always always find a way to make it to that next great hope of a pitch, a sale, a green light.
And that's how you know that the CEOs are so fucking out of touch with reality. With the industry. With the POINT of the industry the point for most (not all, but most) has never been to be filthy rich, or own a yacht, or even have a membership to SoHo house. It's been to make something we love. To see it come to life, and make other people happy, or sad, or angry, or scared. To take this story you have kicking around your head and turn it into some epic journey. To be part of the process of making worlds and characters come to life. To tell stories.
The CEO's point has been to make as much money as humanly possible. And so they think that's all there is motivating writers. it's not. It never has been. Just because those CEO's wouldn't wait tables or mix drinks or drive a Lyft in order to keep a dream going, doesn't mean the rest of us wouldn't. The CEO's don't have a dream, they have a lifestyle. And I promise you a dream is a much better motivator than a yacht or a Porsche.
Try to bleed us dry, guys. Just because you'd let your own dream bleed to death, doesn't mean we would. We will always find a way to keep it alive.”
—Stefanie Williams, a tv writer on strike

The real problem with the Manic Pixie Dream Girl getting tropified is that it's so strongly rooted in being a uncomfortable caricature of that one autistic girl you knew in high school that when people who actually are autistic write autobiography they get accused of Manic Pixie Dream Girling themselves.
