I went to the Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes exhibit and wanted to share for anyone who has not seen it. I am under the impression that the installation changes from location to location so I wanted to show this snapshot in time. I fully admit to being biased in what I will post so if you want to see a particular character, please let me know! Apologies ahead of time for my crappy photo taking skills.
🔵⚪️🔵⚪️🔵
Steve Rogers (Captain America)
Tumblr media
The whole tour started off with Steve featuring immediately. You can see Captain America all throughout the exhibit but in the room that was more focused on him, Steve was sharing the space with Sam and Bucky.
The picture above was from a small monitor showing different designs and CGI work. I particularly loved this concept sketch. The extra long eyelashes are on point. 👍
Tumblr media
The iconic comic cover of Captain America punching Hitler was one of the first items shown in the exhibit.
Tumblr media
I thought it was interesting that half of Steve’s plaque was about Bucky. 🤣🤣🤣
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was honestly a bit intimidating to stand beside the uniform. Chris isn't the tallest of the bunch but still plenty tall! It just felt really impactful. This was worn by him in Age of Ultron.
Tumblr media
The urge to smash and grab this was very strong. 😝😝😝 I loved the "As wielded by Chris Evans". This particular shield was used in Endgame.
Tumblr media
Steve's various interactions with American presidents. Bush Jr. criticizing Steve for resisting against the Superhuman Registration Act which led to "Civil War", makes me even more glad that I was always Team Cap.
But maybe more importantly:
OBAMA WAS THE ONE WHO PARDONED BUCKY IN THE COMICS?!?! HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS BEFORE???
Tumblr media
The Tesseract. Without the CGI for the glowing blue, it was mostly just clear. But still very cool.
Tumblr media
I admit I am not that knowledgeable about the comics and seeing this "Cap's Kooky Quartet" made me go on a Google info hunt. But basically the other Avengers are tired and abandon Steve to go on vacation and without his knowledge, hire the "New" Avengers line up of Clint, Wanda, and Pietro...who are at this point newbies and basically criminals. From what I gather, it was a lot of bickering and shenanigans (Clint calls Steve "Glamor Pants"!!). I found this incredibly helpful post to explain the dynamic and also please look at this adorable picture of Dad Steve and his Misfit Kids.
Tumblr media
The exhibit ended with the gift shop and I had to ask myself, "Do I REALLY need a soup bowl shaped like Steve's head?". He was definitely the character the most heavily present in merchandise! I was tempted to buy this Marvel cookbook but I do think it was a missed chance for Steve. I mean, okay, I get it. The beef tongue as a nod to living through the Depression. But I would have made corned beef tongue in an acknowledgment to his Irish roots. Just my two cents. 😘😘😘
This is just a small sample of Steve in the exhibit and this post would have gotten way too long if I tried to fit it all! I had a lot of fun and I'm so glad I had a chance to see it!

[Steve]
Slowly rolling open the bottom drawer of my dresser, I sort through until I find a pair of clean black jeans. I’ve already peeled off the old bottoms and washed off my skin with a wet rag pumped with soap. Sighing, I lean against the dresser slightly as I slide the new pants on. Then, I slide the drawer closed with my foot, glancing up at myself in the mirror.
I look tired, probably more tired than I actually feel. It’s been a long day, to say the least. To be honest, I’m surprised that everything was resolved so quickly. I wasn’t too sure at all when Bucky decided that he would take over, but I guess he knew what he was doing. Poor little Willa was terrified; I never wanted to put her through any of that. It was important that she faced her fears in regards to Bucky to rekindle their relationship, but when it became so much that she actually wet herself from fear, I was seriously considering putting a cap on the whole situation.
I guess I’m just thankful it all seemed to work out in the end.
Not wanting to leave the two alone for too long in case Willa needs anything, I make sure to waste no time in getting back out of my room and down the hall. I can hear Bucky talking as I enter the living space, his tone slightly raised and softened to accommodate the young child he’s with. He stands in the kitchen over a pot of something that’s steaming; Willa sits near him on the counter, listening to the man intently. “I’ve never been much of a cook myself; Steve can tell you that. I’ve gotten better, though, ever since I was rescued and started living on my own. Hopefully this doesn’t turn out too bad,” Buck chuckles.
“What’re you guys making?” I ask as I walk over to join the two. Willa lifts her head a little bit when she hears my voice, and I smile at her. Bucky turns to me and gestures to the pot.
“I thought we could make some soup. I saw chicken and veggies in your fridge,” he explains.
Shifting over to Willa, I offer a nod, fine with the idea. The child tenses as I near her and looks up at me, her eyes wide. “I’m s-sorry,” she apologizes quickly, “I didn’t mean t-to, won’t do it again; I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, sweetheart. I know you were scared,” I tell her reassuringly. Though the girl still seems uneasy, she says no more about it. “I’m gonna make something separate for her, since she’s still transitioning from her restricted intake at Hydra,” I explain to Bucky as I go into the fridge, retrieving the ingredients needed to make a smoothie. The brown-haired man nods, a hint of sadness in his eyes as he looks over the child in front of him.
Pulling out the blender from the cabinet above the sink, as well as a cutting board and a knife, I cut up the fruit, throwing it in the blender along with some protein powder, supplements, and yogurt. “Big noise,” Willa tells Bucky, a warning she’s gotten in the habit of giving everyone before Bruce or I turn on the blender. Buck and I both smile at her adorableness, and my friend nods at her.
“Okay, dove. Thanks for letting me know,” he plays along. Pressing down on the power button, the machine whirs to life as I glance over at Willa to see her covering her ears slightly. Just as I’m turning the blender off again, once the mixture is smooth, my phone vibrates. I pull it out of my pocket to read the screen. It’s a text from Tony in the team’s group chat.
Tony: Team meeting in 10, 50th flr- mandatory.
I raise my eyebrows at the text, wondering what it means. It’s not often that we call group meetings, especially only ten minutes in advance. “Hey Buck, Tony’s calling a meeting here in ten,” I inform him slowly. The man nods. “I don’t know what it’s about, but you and Willa can always go hang out on the balcony or something if it’s something he doesn’t want you listening in on.”
“Sounds good to me,” Buck replies as I turn to take out a clean cup from a cabinet and pour the smoothie into it, handing it to Willa.
“Thank'ou,” she cheers sweetly, bringing the cup to her mouth and taking a sip. When she lowers it back down, a thin line of the smoothie has formed on the precious child’s upper lip.
“Looks like you have a smoothie-stache, little missy,” Bucky teases, poking at the girl’s cheek. Willa giggles and I take a napkin, gently wiping off her mouth. My phone vibrates once again; this time it’s a text from Thor. Moments after, Tony responds.
Thor: I am not on your planet.
Tony: Fine. Sit this one out.
“Bucky,” a soft voice says from across the room. The three of us turn our attention over to Wanda who’s entered from the hallway. “I didn’t know you were coming over. How are you?” The older girl makes her way over to us, giving the man a slight hug.
“I’m alright. Just wanted to meet the newest member of the team,” Bucky replies with a smile, nodding at Willa. Wanda nods as he begins to add ingredients he’s been preparing to the pot.
“Do you have any idea what Stark wants to talk about?” Wanda asks me, seeming a little bit unsettled.
“No,” I sigh, wishing I could reassure my friend. “But whatever it is, we’ll handle it together, okay?” Wanda nods, leaning in to give me a half-hug as well. Then, she turns her attention to Willa, who’s still happily sipping on her smoothie.
“And how are you doing, little love?” she asks the younger girl, ruffling her hair slightly. Willa smiles up at her, the green shimmering in her eyes with affection.
“Matching,” Willa replies proudly, pointing to her shirt, then mine. I grin, nodding.
“What are you cooking? I can’t smell anything,” Wanda frowns, turning back to investigate the pot on the stove. Bucky huffs, a frown forming on his face. Wanda pushes him aside and stirs the contents a few times, a look of disapproval washing over her. “Americans have no idea how to cook,” she shakes her head, pulling some spices out of the rack beside the stove. As she shakes in various amounts of each one, the scent vividly comes to life.
“How does she do that?” Bucky asks incredulously.
“You’re no better than Vision,” Wanda sighs.
From across the room, the elevator’s bell can be heard, and soon Sam, Clint, Nat, and Bruce have all made their way out into the common space. “Hey Buck,” Clint greets. Sam, Nat, and Bruce wave over at him as well. “Haven’t seen you in a while. What’s cooking? It smells great in here.”
“That would be my doing,” Wanda grins. As I notice Willa scooting herself a tiny bit closer to me, I wrap an arm around her gently. Whenever there are more than a few people in the room, she tends to become a little bit more clingy, which I don’t blame her for. Living with so many people can become quite a lot, at times. Especially a cast of characters like this. The four who have just joined us all settle down on the couches, resuming a conversation they were probably in the middle of when they came up.
Willa leans her head slightly against me as she takes another swallow of her smoothie, her eyes scanning the room that’s now become rather loud. I lean my head down a little bit and whisper, “I’m not a big fan of meetings.” The girl nods, and I assume she maybe feels the same way.
“This is going to need to sit for at least an hour to let everything thicken,” Wanda tells Bucky in regards to his dish. He frowns again, sighing.
“I should’ve ordered a pizza,” he mumbles.
Another ring of the bell can barely be heard, and the elevator doors open again, this time revealing Tony, Peter, and Vision. The three walk in and Tony’s eyes scan from left to right, counting heads. He then nods, pleased that everyone’s in attendance. In his hands, he holds a large stack of paper. Oh boy, I think to myself. A stack like that always means something’s going down.
“Hey everyone. Hey, hi, hello- could we all zip it? We’re having a meeting here, remember?”
Slowly, the buzz of the room dies down, and Tony makes his way over to the long dining table, finding a seat at the head. Beside me, Wanda adjusts the burner to low, swallowing hard. I send her a comforting smile, and she returns it, though I can see her fear lingering in her eyes.
“Can we gather around? That’s it. Get nice and comfy,” Tony encourages us as we all start to make our way over to the table. To Tony’s right is Vision, followed by Clint, Natasha, and eventually, Bucky. Peter sits to Tony’s left, followed by Bruce, Sam, and Wanda. I wrap my other arm around Willa and lift her onto my hip, slowly walking over and taking a seat at the opposite end of the table from Tony, by Bucky and Wanda. “Oh, soldier. Didn’t see you there. Good of you to join us,” Tony nods to Bucky, causing him to stiffen slightly at the chosen nickname.
“Okay, what’s this all about?” Bruce asks somewhat impatiently.
“Yeah- c'mon, man,” Sam shakes his head, “I was just about to kick Natasha’s ass in the training room for the first time in-”
“You mean the first time ever?” Nat cuts him off with a grin. Sam scoffs and shakes his head again, but clearly knows she’s right.
“Yeah, yeah, that can wait,” Tony dismisses. “We’ve got something serious to talk about. So you all better listen up.”
Setting the stack of paper down on the table in front of him, face down, the man pulls a small cube out of his pocket. Tapping the smooth surface of the device, a blue light flashes to life, suddenly shooting an image into the air in front of Tony, like a mini projector that doesn’t need a flat surface; the screen just structures itself. It’s blank, but with a few more taps on the side of the cube, the scientist pulls up a real picture, one of a city.
“We are… the Avengers,” he begins, “a group of superheroes who have saved the day in times of mortal peril, time and time again. We fight evil, protect those who can’t protect themselves, and risk our lives routinely to get the job done, whatever it takes. We’re the good guys, and the world knows it. They love us, and they’re thankful for us.” My stomach twists as I sense can begin to sense where this might be going… somewhere different than just how much good we’ve done for the planet.
“But…?” Sam asks, also sensing that Tony has more to say.
“But, while most see us as heroes, there are some who… struggle, to accept that label,” Tony reveals.
“What label would you use, Tony?” Nat questions.
“How about, dangerous?” the man suggests, a hint of venom coating his voice. He taps the cube again; suddenly, the picture of the city has turned into a running video. On the screen, a giant green figure busts through an entire building, sending it toppling to the ground. “New York,” Tony states simply. Bruce grimaces at the sight, and I turn Willa away in my lap so that she can’t see what’s being presented to us. Tony taps the cube again, and a new video appears. “Washington D.C.” Several cars have all smashed into each other. To my left, Bucky sinks down in his chair, and I almost have the urge to tell Tony to stop. With another tap, the video shifts to an entire chunk of land being lifted into the air. “Sokovia.” The film shows people falling off the sides of the raised city, bodies piling up under crumbled buildings. Finally, Tony taps the device one last time and shows a view of a building. “Lagos.” Suddenly, a large mass of red and orange glowing light enters the shot as it’s thrown into the side of the structure. The camera zooms in on a young girl’s face, her eyes wide open and empty, all the life drained out of what’s now just her pitiful dead corpse. Hearing Wanda let out a whimper beside me, I finally decide to step in.
“Okay. That’s enough,” I say firmly. Tony switches off the cube, and the whole room seems to let out a deep breath.
“We’ve been operating for four years with no supervision. The governments of the world can no longer accept those conditions,” Tony informs us. “But, we’ve been offered a solution.” He flips over the stack of papers. “The Sokovia Accords.”
Vision takes the stack and glances over it before he passes it down to Clint. Everyone starts looking it over as it’s passed around, while Tony continues to talk.
“Approved by 117 countries, it states that the Avengers shall no longer be a private organization. Instead, we’ll operate under the supervision of a United Nations panel, only when and if that panel deems it necessary.” My eyebrows furrow in confusion as the packet is put in front of me. Bucky glances at me, the look in his eyes matching exactly how I’m feeling. This isn’t right. Then, I look to my other side, and Wanda seems to be having the same exact thoughts.
“The Avengers were formed to make the world a safer place,” I counter steadily. “I feel we’ve done that.”
“Can you tell me, Cap, where Thor is right now? If we misplaced a 30-megaton nuke, you can bet there’d be consequences,” Tony shoots back. I gaze around the room to find a mixture of expressions falling on the faces of the team. Handing our power over to politicians? Something about that just doesn’t sit right with me. “Compromise and reassurance. That’s how the world works,” Tony continues to reason. “Believe me. The government guy I spoke to, Mr. Secretary Ross, he made it very clear. This is the middle ground.”
“So, there are… contingencies?” Bruce assumes.
“Three days from now, the UN meets in Vienna to ratify the Accords,” Tony confirms. “We need to talk it over.”
“And if we come to a decision they don’t like?” Nat raises an eyebrow.
“Then we retire,” Tony tells her coldly. Nat nods, a smirk on her face, but I can tell that none of us find any actual humor in the situation.
“Tony, I don’t like this,” I start.
“You know what? I knew you’d say that, Cap, and quite frankly, I don’t love the idea of handing over the wheel to new hands, either, but sometimes we gotta make tough decisions for the greater good,” he spits through his teeth, nodding down at the little girl in my lap. I sigh, not ready to get into a conversation about Willa now; not when we clearly have other things to discuss. Luckily, Tony doesn’t go any further down that path.
“I don’t know about this, either,” Sam interjects. “We’re the ones doing the fighting. I don’t want someone else picking our battles.”
“This is the UN, Sam. It’s not like we have much of a choice,” Bruce reasons.
“Exactly. We don’t have a choice. There’s a clear answer here,” Tony agrees, nothing short of exasperated at this point. “We sign them. We give them what they want, before they take everything from us.”
“They’ll come for me?” Wanda asks meekly.
“We would protect you,” I reassure her, but it doesn’t stop her from sinking down in her chair. Willa looks around at the room, her little body beginning to shake. I’m not sure how much she’s picking up about what’s going on, but I know she can tell that a storm’s brewing among us, and however it ends, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be peacefully.
“I have an equation,” Vision informs us.
“Oh great, this’ll clear everything up,” Sam groans.
“Ever since Mr. Stark revealed himself as Iron Man, the number of enhanced individuals presenting themselves has increased exponentially. As has the number of potentially world-ending events,” the computer-man says.
“So you’re saying it’s our fault?” I ask in confusion.
“What I’m saying is, our existence invites challenge. The challenge turns into chaos. Chaos… breeds catastrophe.”
“I think Tony’s right,” Nat says out of the blue.
“Excuse me?” the man with the glasses stutters. “Am I- did I miss something? Or did you just agree with me?”
“Oh, I wanna take it back,” Nat warns with a groan.
“No, no- there’s no taking it back. Continue,” Tony encourages.
“We need to earn their trust,” the redhead explains. “If we have one hand on the wheel, we can still steer. Staying together is more important than how we stay together.”
“I’m sorry, but… I just can’t accept that,” I say, shaking my head. Tony sighs, the annoyance growing on his face. “The safest hands are still our own. We don’t want them sending us places we don’t want to go. Or not letting us go places that we need to go.”
“Jesus, Rogers. Do you ever just think- could you ever just, even for a moment, just- just stop and listen to yourself? It’s ignorant; you’re so goddamn- no. It’s not even ignorant. It’s just reckless,” Tony grits through his teeth.
“He’s trying to keep politics out of this, Tony, don’t you see that?” Sam tries.
“There’s no sane way to keep politics out of anything! Especially not something like this,” Bruce fires back.
“Oh god,” Clint mumbles. “There’s no way this’s ending well.”
And with that, the room erupts into a whirlwind of voices, all talking over each other, all trying to press their view of the situation. I sigh, trying to find a single person to listen to, but it’s impossible. It’s not a conversation anymore; it’s a chorus of yelling.
The little body settled on my lap has begun to shake more violently, snapping me out of my thoughts. Looking down at Willa, I find that her eyes are wide with fear. This isn’t good for her; these are adult issues, things she should be removed from as best we can. “I have to go,” I shake my head, standing up with the girl in my arms. Tony glares at me, but I speak again before he can stop me. “You’ve said your piece. We can talk more later if we have to.” At that, the noise resumes, though Tony is still staring at me, his eyes narrowed in anger. Before anything more can happen, I turn and make my way out of the room.
“It’s okay, doll. We can find somewhere quieter,” I soothe as I carry Willa down the hall. She buries her face in my shoulder, only letting out a quiet whimper as a response.
We reach her bedroom and I walk in swiftly, closing the door behind us. Making my way over to the girl’s bed, I sit down, leaning back against the pillows that are propped up. Willa is curled up in a ball on my lap, her breathing becoming short and uneven.
“Hey, sweetheart,” I ease, stroking the child’s hair. She flinches slightly, a look of panic in her eyes, and I can tell that she’s just about ready to collapse into a full-blown anxiety attack. “Can you take some deep breathes for me, Willa-bug?” I ask. “In, and out,” I show her. “In, and out. There you go; you got it.”
“L-loud,” the poor kid mumbles as her shoulders curl in towards themselves, her entire frame shaking hard. “P-p-please,” she stutters, struggling to make out the word.
“‘Please’ what, sweetheart? What’s wrong?” I frown, concerned that she’s having such a hard time speaking.
“C-can’t breathe, it-… l-loud,” she hiccups, a few tears escaping her eyes.
“Oh honey,” I croon sadly, my heart aching at the sight of her crying. “It’s okay, Willa. You’re okay; it’s quiet now. It’s nice and quiet, see?” I try. But my words seem to do little to help.
Reaching over onto her nightstand, I grab her pacifier, holding it out in front of her. The girl cowers back, her repeated reaction to the object, but I know that as soon as she has it, she’ll feel better.
“It’s okay, babydoll. It won’t hurt; it helps, remember? Not gonna hurt you.” Thankfully, my reassurance seems to ease her fears ever so slightly, and she allows me to slip the nub into her mouth. Like magic, her body instantly starts to relax, and she rests against me, still shaking, but much less intensely than before.
I rock her back and forth, continuing to brush her hair down gently as we sit together in the quiet. Sighing, I think about what Tony proposed. I can see where he’s coming from, but in the end, I still don’t think it’s right. And judging by some of the other responses from the team, I’m clearly not alone. All I can hope is that things will be resolved peacefully.
Though, I have the burning feeling in the pit of my stomach that they won’t be.

SteveTony - Fix-Its
Here are some Fix-Its to mend your heart. Don't forget to leave kudos and nice comments in every fic!
Tumblr media
Making Amends, by TheseStoriesAreWrittenOnMyHeart, 100 k > words, Post-CA Civil War.
Everything about them happened in seconds. Their first meeting was quick, with Tony landing next to the Captain, each man giving a curt nod and name in greeting. Their argument on the hellicarrier took mere seconds to escalate. Until Steve was goading Tony into putting on the suit and going a few rounds and Tony not so subtly reminding Steve that he wasn’t afraid to hit an old man.
It was only seconds of staring at Tony on that New York City Street, his arc reactor dark, no rise and fall of his chest, for Steve to know that inside the tin can, was a good man.
Then Ultron happened, and it took seconds for their world to change, seconds for Steve to throw his shield at Tony and for the billionaire to send a repulsor blast back. They went from laughing and relaxing to standing on an edge thousands of feet above solid ground.
And now…now everything’s changed. And all it took was a combination of seconds; of decisions made, actions performed and words spoken that they couldn’t get back.
Just a few ticks of the clock for their world to shatter.
It’ll take more than that to make things right.
almeno tu nell’universo, by silkspectred, 100 k > words, Post-CA Civil War.
Tony drives off.
Well, he wants to.
But he can’t.
Because.
Steve Rogers is in front of his car.
Steve fucking Rogers. Is in front of Tony’s fucking car.
you'll wait a long time, by nanasekei, 16 k > words.
Steve and Tony share a moment during a wedding. Things escalate from there.
Alternatively: Four weddings, a funeral, and one very emotionally stunted idiot.
Down in Lonesome Town by resurrectedhippo, 79 k > words, Endgame Fix-It.
“Why do I always find my way back to you?”
Maybe he didn’t necessarily return to Steve, but fate is a funny little thing, and after living a life of loss, Steve wants something that’s his to keep. Tony deserves a love that’s unrestrained. Steve thinks he’ll erupt with it.
Love is messy, not easy, and takes work.
Maybe love feels like rage.
But maybe love could just be jumping off a rocky mountain and smiling anyway.
After the universe is restored, Steve is lost without any direction. Retiring from the Avengers, he moves across the country and ends up building a house by a misty blue lake. Across the bridge is Tony Stark’s new workshop.
The Butterfly Effect by itsallAvengers, 20 k > words, Time Travel, Canon Divergence.
While fighting with Loki, Steve Rogers from 2012 hears the two simple words: "Bucky's alive."
And the whole universe ripples with the aftershocks.
Saving the World is a 12 Step Program by janonny, 34 k > words, Avengers: Endgame (Movie), Canon Diverge.
Tony and Steve fall to pieces when Thanos’ wins.
Then they pick themselves up, and find a solution. They also find something infinitely more precious in the process.
-
“It’s going to sound pretty outrageous,” Tony admitted, rubbing a hand over his brow. While he had put on some weight and wasn’t as gaunt anymore, he was still easily tired nowadays.
“More outrageous than talking racoons and a purple villain traveling through space to collect magic stones?” Steve asked drily.
Here's How it Happens by tonystarkssnipples, 1 k < words, Post-Avengers: Endgame (Movie).
“I got my chance with him. Now it's your turn.” Pepper smiles, shaking and brittle, but honest. “Go love him.”
-or-
The fic where Steve uses time travel to go back and relive his life with Tony.
You smile, but you don't mean it by Cap_Sweet_And_Salty_Sadness, 10 k > words, Post-Captain America: Civil War (Movie).
"I want to drink to forget I’m supposed to be mad at you, that we’re supposed to hate each other. I want to drink because we’re so bad with words it was easier to fight with our fists rather than talk our problems through."
Tony doesn't know how to fix himself, but he will try if it means fixing Steve and him.
To Have My Time Again... by WilmaKins, 166 k > words, Post-Captain America: Civil War (Movie).
It's been two years since Siberia, and Tony Stark is still dealing with the fallout - personal and political. Life is quite complicated enough, without Bruce falling through a wizards roof yelling that Thanos is coming.
Thor and Loki are stalling, but time is running out. The fate of the universe is at stake. Steve Rogers is back in the picture. Really, the last thing Tony needs is for their plan to go horribly wrong and bring Howard Stark forward in time.
But his Dad *is* standing in his office, whether he likes it or not.
So, it looks like Tony will have to fix that mess too.
Series
The Facility by WilmaKins, 155 k > words, Fake/Pretend relationship, Post-Captain America: Civil War (Movie).
After coming so close to losing against Thanos, the Avengers have decided to set aside their differences and work as a team again. Well, they're trying... But there are a lot of hurts that haven't gone away, and a lot of things still unsaid, and a lot of tension...
And that was BEFORE Tony accidentally ended up on an undercover mission with Steve as his fake boyfriend - at what turns out to be an alien sex club.
Canon Divergent post IW AU - Tags to be updated as updates are written... but I think you probably get the gist.
check yes (if the feeling isn't new) by cvptains, 12 k > words, Post-Captain America: Civil War (Movie).
After the battle with Thanos, both Tony and Steve struggle with reconnecting in certain aspects of their lives. Sam Wilson and Peter Parker are totally over it.
Where both Steve and Tony's respective friends make accounts for them on the renowned dating app, FlickLove, and the results come out a bit... surprising. Cue unadvisable meddling that really — honestly — comes from good intentions.
Bright Things and Fair by sheron for ishipallthings, 21 k > words, Canon Divergence - Avengers: Endgame (Movie).
The course of true love never did run smooth — and neither did time-travel to retrieve the Tesseract. When circumstances outside their control force Steve and Tony to spend more time together in the 1970, they do what two people with their history do under the circumstances: work together and try to get through it without unnecessary feelings getting in the way. Falling for each other is definitely a bad idea, isn't it?

Summary- It has been more than a decade since the Kingdom of Ultron lost their princess. (Y/n) was just a 17 year old that didn’t know much about her past. Realizations happen and lives are crossed. How will (Y/n) handle the new pressure?

“(Y/n) this is King T’Challa.” Tony motioned his daughter to move closer to the king. She curtsied before speaking to him.
“It’s great to finally meet you.” She watched as he bowed to her.
“I can say the same about you. I’ve heard a lot about you in the past few weeks.” (Y/n) blushed out of nervousness and looked out the corner of her eye for some moral support, but she found nothing. Her father probably went to go mingle while leaving (Y/n) alone with a person she barely knew.
“Yes well I’ll admit that it has been a crazy week.” She laughed under her breath. King T’Challa smiled kindly.
“I bet-” he was cut off by a woman whispering in his ear. His eyes never strayed from (Y/n), however, his mind clearly did as he listened intently, “thank you, Nakia. I’m sorry (Y/n), I’d love to talk to you later, but I must attend to something.”
“It’s no issue, it was great meeting you.” He nodded before turning around and following Nakia out of the ballroom. (Y/n) stood quietly off to the side while fiddling with her thumbs (a nervous habit that her teacher has tried to get out of her because it ‘doesn’t look royal’, but has so far failed). Huffing, she turned on her heel and walked to the other side of the ballroom and slipped out a side door that was only for the servants to exit and enter. It led to the garden, a fact that she learned the first day of her being in this huge castle. Walking down the corridor, she opened the outside door and began to wander the fresh smelling flowers.
(Y/n)’s fingers ruffled the petals of a tiger lily before moving onto the white roses. “You could get killed being out here.” She turned around quickly to see two men standing on the edge of the flower beds.
“You say it like it’s something to be afraid of.” (Y/n) responded to the man with brown hair and blue eyes. Both of them quirked their eye brows in a similar way.
“And you’re not?” The blonde haired man asked.
(Y/n) shook her head. “There is nothing I feel like I should be afraid of. No pain, physical or mental? Seems as though it would be a good deal.” The first man shrugged before moving closer to (Y/n).
“It’s great to meet you, princess.” He took (Y/n)’s hand in his and kissed the back of it. “My name is Bucky.” (Y/n) smiled queasily before pulling away and tucking her hand in the grasp of her other.
“It’s great to meet you too. You’re the Duke of-” She was cut off by the blonde man which left a bad taste in her mouth. She hated being cut off, especially by someone that she just met.
“Brooklyn, and I am Steve, the King.” He bowed to the girl in front of him and his smile fell at the small nod she gave to him.
“Pleasure.” Her voice had a hint of distaste to it. “I must be going. It was wonderful to meet you both.” They nodded and that was (Y/n)’s cue to leave, practically running to the door.
“Where were you?” Tony asked, pulling (Y/n) in for a quick kiss on the forehead.
“I went for a walk, it was feeling stuffy in here.” Tony opened his mouth to scold her, but he was cut off by a booming voice.
“Stark! It is so good to see you.” (Y/n) turned around to see another blonde haired man in front of her, but this man had longer hair than Steve and also sported a beard. (Y/n) watched with interest aimed at the man as he hugged her father. “This must be Lady (Y/n)!” He bows to her kindly before motioning to her father. “How has it been living with a man as snarky as him?” Tony shook his head before pushing the man’s hand off his shoulder.
“(Y/n) this is Thor. He’s the King of Asgard.”
“It’s great to meet you,” (Y/n) felt tired of saying the same thing over and over again to all of the Kings, Queens, and other nobles as she had been all night, “and yes, my father is quite a challenge.” She teased and Tony stuck out his tongue at her.
“I can tell.” He looked around for a second like he was assessing the room. “Would you like to dance with me?” (Y/n) nodded, excited to know more about Thor.
***
They danced for three songs all while talking and laughing about memories and stories of those back in Asgard. (Y/n) loved the stories about his younger (adopted) brother named Loki and the constant tricks and pranks that he pulled on all people.
“You will have to come meet him sometime, Lady (Y/n).” She nodded excitedly, laughing as Thor spun her out and pulled her in close.
“I would love that.” She answered, talking a bit louder than usual because of the noise of the ballroom. The music decrescendoed and clapping once again filled the ballroom. Everyone watched as the King of Ultron stepped up and began speaking.
“I thank you all for coming and celebrating the return of my first daughter,” everyone turned to face (Y/n) and clapped, making her shy away from the attention slightly, “now as the night winds down, I’d love to do some dances that trace back generations, so come dance and if you don’t want to, get out.” Laughter started up, but it was anxious as no one knew if he joking or not. The band immediately started playing an upbeat tune once Tony got off the stage. (Y/n) squealed with happiness before grabbing Thor’s hand and dragging him to the big circle that was made in the middle of the ballroom.
“I love this dance!” She grasped Thor’s hand in her right and another man’s on her left that she didn’t recognize. “This was the first dance I was taught by my teacher when I got here.” Thor’s eyes twinkled as everyone grabbed hands and began walking four steps in then four steps out.
“I was only taught this a week before I came, so forgive me if I’m rusty.” (Y/n) shook her head and laughed as everyone broke off into twos and began dancing.
“I thought you’ve been friends with my father for a long time? Why are you just now doing this dance?” He picked her up by the waist and spun her before bringing her back to solid ground.
“I’ve never been able to make a party like this before, usually my parents would come instead.” Thor flinched at his own words and (Y/n) knew not to pry anymore. (Y/n) split off again with the rest of the women and moved to the next man that they had not danced with yet.
“What a pleasure to meet you, princess. Name is Brock Rumlow.”
“Wonderful.” Her tone was flat and she was spun again into the next person’s arms.
“(Y/n).” Steve said, a smile growing on his face as he held onto her waist with his hand.
“Your majesty.” She said plainly and his smile fell.
“Look, I’m sorry for interrupting yo-” she was spun again, this time into Bucky’s arms. He held her closer than Steve, his arm going fully around her waist to pull her chest-to-chest.
“Does your friend ever not interrupt people?” Bucky laughed and shook his head. (Y/n) felt the heat in her stomach grow a tiny bit before completing disappearing.
“I can’t say I’ve known when he does. However, I know that he does it when he’s excited and he did seem jumpy to meet you.” (Y/n) looked over to Steve who was spinning a girl with blonde hair in his arms. The band slowed down and once the last of the strings stopped, everyone else followed. People clapped to the band before starting to leave in groups.
“(Y/n)?” Tony called and she turned around. “I have invited the kings and their families from neighboring to stay here for a while.” (Y/n) knew the deeper meaning in that sentence. They were staying here because of the threat that Hydra made. “I’ll see you in the morning, okay?” He kissed her forehead and patted the back of her head while staring straight at the two men who were standing too close to her in his opinion.
“Dad, just leave.” She jokingly pushed him away and he looked insulted before rolling his eyes. “I can bring them to their rooms.”
“They’re in the visitor’s wing.”
“I know, stop worrying.” Tony gave one more look at the two men before turning around to join Thor and T’Challa along with their families.
“Let’s go.” She nodded towards the open door before walking through and down the corridor. Bucky and Steve ran after her and waited until they caught up to begin talking.
“I really am sorry.” Steve said and (Y/n) watched as he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
She shook her head. “It’s whatever...just don’t do it again please.” Steve nodded and the three took a left and then a right to end up in the visitor’s hall. “Lisa?” An older woman turned around and smiled when she saw (Y/n).
“What can I do for you, dear?” (Y/n) smiled.
“Can you tell me where Steve and Bucky are supposed to be?” Lisa nodded.
“Second and third doors to your right, miss.”
“Thank you.” The woman nodded and walked down the hallway.
“Here we are.” (Y/n) nodded towards the direction of the doors.
“Thank you.” She shook her head at Steve’s words.
“Can we see you tomorrow?” Bucky asked, holding his door open slightly.
“You don’t have any meetings with my father and the rest of the kings?” (Y/n) teased and both Steve’s and Bucky’s eyes widened.
“I-I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Bucky suddenly got nervous.
“I’m not stupid, boys. So what time?”
“4:00.” Steve was the first to give up. Interesting.
“Do you both know how to ride?” They nodded. “Well how about we go riding after breakfast?” The two nodded again. “Great. Good night.” She began walking off.
“Wait,” Bucky yelled, “shouldn’t we be walking you back?”
“I’ve never been one for the traditions.” (Y/n) said simply and began walking once again. Two doors shut behind her.

Natasha wanted things to go back to how they were with Steve before the Accords and before her miscarriage. There was a part of her that felt like she was betraying Alexei, Melina, and Yelena by loving Steve, but the other side wanted to retire from the spy life. Wanted to retire from everything. She was tired of the jobs, of keeping secrets from the people she considered family. She didn't even hate Bucky or resent him anymore, unlike Alexei, Yelena, and Melina. She just wanted Steve and the rest of this to go away. She wanted life to feel remotely normal again. She didn't want to lie anymore to any of them. Everyone had been lied too so much. She was only added onto the drama. Natasha ran herself a bath, pouring in her jasmine scented bubble bath, mixing it with the water. She sighed tiredly, trying to settle into the water, when she felt her phone vibrate. As she looked at it, she saw it was a text message from Melina. 'I need to talk to you, Alexei and Yelena tomorrow in Zagreb, Croatia urgently. It's about her!' The text message said cryptically. Natasha felt a sense of dread wash over her at the text. 'I'll need to make an excuse to Steve, Tony, and the others first,' she texted quickly. Melina replied four minutes later. 'We are your family, Natalia, not them!' Melina had messaged back furiously. Natasha closed her in frustration, breaking down in tears at her dilemma.

"Whoever hired that team to assassinate the mystery girl really wants her dead. Tell Barnes and Carter to get a blood sample from her so we can test it for DNA. Maybe she's in the international database," Fury recommended sternly. Everyone nodded but Tony shook his head. "We need to send someone else to watch over Barnes, Fury. I personally believe that he's compromised. His judgement is skewed because he's convinced that this girl might be the dead girl from the files. Who knows what he might have done with her if she was in the Red Room," Tony insisted harshly, causing most of the people to look at him in disapproval. "We can't send Belova or Romanoff? They've been sent on a mission in Zagreb, Croatia to track down a few remaining Flag Smashers. Who else can we send?" Grant asked quietly, his face bruised from his fight with a Flag Smasher during a mission in London, Great Britain. "Send in Steve. He's become really good at working undercover and Bucky trusts him," Sam suggested diplomatically. It couldn't be him, seeing as the Smiling Tiger was in Madripoor. Ross had an expression of disdain, while Tony was cold but grudgingly agreed to the arrangement. "Try not to mess up, Capsicle," Tony said coldly, before walking out of the conference room. Steve sighs a bit before nodding. "I can do that. I'm sure Bucky hasn't gotten super far. I could help him out together."

Morgan Stark was determined to make her daddy happy. He'd been sad ever since Captain America's best friend, Bucky Barnes, had been pardoned by the government and found not guilty at his trial. Her dad had gone into a rage, shouting that Barnes was a monster and anyone on Steve's side was to blame for Thanos winning. So she was going to somehow make him smile again. She was going to build an AI, like he did. She already had a name picked out for him as well. Her dad had explained to her that he had created Ultron to protect the world. Maybe she could do that again, and somehow bring him back to make not only her daddy happy but the world happy. All she knew was that she was tired of hearing him fighting all the time with the Avengers and she wanted to somehow change that. Maybe a new Ultron could do that? She had found his memory core not that long ago. Maybe if she followed his blueprints from years ago…she could, do it? She didn't want any more arguing or yelling…all she wanted was for this to end. So that was that. She was going to do it. One way or another. Daddy had a lab always near him. It would be the perfect time to do it. Maybe they could finally figure out how to end all the fighting. Maybe she'll be the cause of it. Daddy would be happy. They would see they were wrong about him. Somehow.

When Steve had arrived in Madripoor, it looked the same as it always had from before, with bright lights and big neon signs drawing in anyone from a mile away. However, his eyes were more focused on trying to get to Bucky's place. He had talked with Sharon about where to go and she had directed him willingly, leading him towards midtown where a lot of the higher ups in the crime world lived. It was also where the mystery woman lived, apparently. Hopefully they would be able to get through to this quickly. He had knocked on the door, and for a moment there was silence. He had been expecting that, considering Bucky was most certainly not expecting anyone to come by and greet him. But he slowly opened the door, and when he saw it was Steve his eyes widened.
"Where the hell did you come from?" He asks as he lets him in, giving him an embrace. When Steve stepped back, he closes the door behind him, turning to Bucky. "Lot has happened at the base while you were gone," Steve states with a raised brow. "I'm not longer in charge of the Avengers. Ross gave it to Tony." Bucky's brow raises. "You're serious?" "He did. They were upset about our choice in operation of sending you here." Bucky lets out a long sigh, going to sit on the couch at that. "We defended you the best we could, but at the end of the day, they had the last call. Sam suggested I come over here to fill out their needs." Bucky's brow raises once more. "Which are?" "Keep an eye on you." Bucky feels himself groan before standing. "How the hell am I ever going to be an Avenger in their eyes?" He asks, his voice rising a bit in anger. "Everything I do now, even after all the amends and everything I've done, it'll never work…all I want is to prove myself. I know I'm a piece of shit but…I'm fucking trying." "I know you are, Buck," Steve says gently, letting his hands rest on the man's shoulders. "I know you are. And trust me, we all see it. There are some that are just stuck in their ways that I don't believe are going to change soon. Those are the ones that, when they do inevitably open their eyes, they'll see the most change in you." Bucky snorts a bit. "That one of your little political speeches?" he asks. "No," Steve answers, shaking his head. "Trust me, I highly doubt I'm going to be doing much more than you are here. If anything, while I know how to stay undercover, if I get recognized here, it's game over." He gestures to you. "At least with you, not a lot of people know your face. Even this girl doesn't." He glances over at Bucky's hands and notices there seemed to be dried blood on it. "Speaking of that…" Bucky glances down at his hand and feels his cheeks turn red. "It's not on me, I swear – Maria wanted to interrogate the men that came, and she ended up killing them. Turns out they were sent by a woman named Melina Vostokoff. She wants to end the woman for some reason." "Well, we knew about the attack but your…hands?" Bucky sighs a bit. "I went over to help her a couple of days ago after she was attacked. Try and get more info on her. I guess I just didn't clean off all the blood afterwards." He looks up at Steve and shakes his head. "She is a mystery woman…definitely likes to keep her identity a secret." Steve nods before going to sit down next to him. "I want to ask you a question, and just respond the best you can." Bucky nods. "Are you sure that you don't know her from back then?" Bucky sighs, swallowing a bit. "I…feel like I do." He glances back at Steve. "If you saw the way she moves, and what she had – I mean, she's like a carbon copy of Nat but she's ruthless. She even had some of the same weapons. She had to be trained in Red Room…but I can't recall her for the life of me. That's why I'm trying so hard to figure out if she's truly Ana or not. Maria seems like a reasonable name but…don't know." Steve nods quietly. "Didn't you and Nat have a thing back when you were there?" Bucky quietly nods. He didn't like to think about it often. There was so much pain involved in everything there. "Do you think you might have known this girl like that?" "I genuinely can't remember," Bucky answers honestly, glancing at him. "At this point, all I'm looking for is for some way to figure out if she's truly who she says she is. Maybe after I can search more." Steve sighs but nods. "We got a lot of work ahead of us, then."
Tumblr media
Natasha had waited patiently, her arms crossed against her chest with Yelena. It seemed it would take hours for Melina and Alexei to arrive, but when they did, it felt like ages. "You two are worse on time than I am, and that's say something," Yelena mutters. "Quiet, you two," Melina states, looking between them. "We have a serious problem, and I believe you two know what it is."
Natasha and Yelena exchange an uneasy glance, as they look at Alexei who thankfully didn't know what was going on. If he found out Melina had been lying to him for all these years then things would get bloody. "Why did you call me here, Melina?" Alexei asked suspiciously. He hadn't aged well, and it was clearly showing. Despite having the Super-Soldier, it was a far weaker version than the one Bucky and Steve had running through their veins. The woman ignored him as she drank from her glass of red wine, her eyes cold and emotionless. Sometimes Natasha wondered if the woman did genuinely care about her and Yelena, like Alexei did, or if she was just using them. "I believe that despite our best efforts to purge the Red Room, it still exists. Over in Madripoor, a young woman killed the Power Broker, before taking over the city. She's killed several people who tried to break the new rules she implemented as some shot way of a moral code. I refused to acknowledge the bitch, and I tried to kill her…but she defeated me," she said sourly, a hint of bitterness in her voice. "What did you do, Melina?" Natasha asked warningly, praying that the woman hadn't compromised Bucky. If she had, then Steve would go ballistic and raise hell if Bucky were hurt. Not to mention the others. Her surrogate mother regarded her with a cold expression that would have terrified anyone else. But she wasn't frightened of her anymore, not after seeing what she was afraid of. "I hired a death squadron to kill the little whore. She won't survive against them," Melina said confidently, causing Natasha to stare at the woman in shock, before her gaze breaks. Fuck. She had enough and was about to leave, when Melina grabbed her right wrist in a tight grip. "Remember where your true loyalties are, Natasha. I don't want you to end up like her…who chose HIM over us," Melina said meaningfully, her grip tight. Natasha nodded coldly, ripping her arm away and started walking back to her car, refusing to be intimidated. 'What have I done, god?' She thought bitterly, climbing into her car, and turning on the heating.

Ana had cleaned up her apartment after she disposed of the bodies. She had dumped Diego's body in Low Town, knowing that someone would post it on the internet. The other three remaining bodies had been dealt with. She hated the Red Room and what they had done to her. but at the very least the teachers knew how to teach all of them in how to dispose of a corpse after killing the individual. She used a luminal torch to see if any bloodstains remained, relieved when she didn't see any. Despite being near people, she desperately wanted a few furry companions. She needed something to keep her company, other than the people she would meet. She wasn't naïve. Ana knew that they would be targets but she wouldn't let anyone hurt them. She was going to ask X-Con Security Consultants if they would be willing to install security at her house. She decided to take a shower and rest up for the night. She wasn't taking any chances now, considering that Melina had tried to kill her twice now. The older woman still thought she was the same, useless, naive, and helpless little girl all those years ago. She sighed heavily as she trudged upstairs, taking off her bloody, filthy clothes and threw them on the floor. There was no salvaging them. She'd burn the clothes tomorrow. She stepped into the en suite bathroom, turning on the hot water, as she looked at herself in the full body mirror. Scars decorated her body, mainly on her chest, her right arm and some were on her back, and left leg.
Bullet wounds, knife wounds and there was a faded scar on her stomach. She touched it hesitantly, feeling a strange sense of heartache and loss for no apparent reason.
Tumblr media
Bucky had gone into the Brass Monkey club, taking Steve with him as they saw Sharon was there. She gestured for them to join her, as they went to a table at the back, where they wouldn't be disturbed. "So, I did some asking around and apparently the woman calling herself Maria Kapitonova is using another woman's name. This is the real Maria Kapitonova. And she's been dead for the last six years, Bucky and Steve." Sharon explained grimly, showing them a photo of a young woman with red hair, brown eyes, and a scar on her throat. Bucky had known that the woman was using a false identity, but this just proved it. Deep down, he knew that she closely resembled Anastasia. Maybe they were related? "So, she's using the identity of a dead woman whose been dead for the last six years. What else have you got, Sharon?" Steve asked intrigued. They were finally getting a fresh lead. "Yeah, I was hoping you'd ask me that question. I did some digging, and Fury emailed me these files that he and Hill found at an abandoned HYDRA base in Voronezh, Voronezh Oblast. Turns out, HYDRA and the Red Room were both working closely together on a project," she said meaningfully. "Something we should talk about elsewhere." Bucky and Steve got her point and left with her to go to her house, leaving behind the bar. Once they arrived, Sharon continued from where she left off, and handed them copies of the files, closing the door behind her. "The Red Room and HYDRA discovered that the girls at the Red Room who had the Super-Soldier serum were far more able to carry a child of the Winter Soldiers. There are lists of names who were chosen for the program. The project began in the 1990′s, and a lot of the pregnancies resulted in the women dying from complications due to the babies developing quicker than a normal baby," Sharon explained gravely as Bucky read the file. He recognized a few of the names, but felt his blood run cold when his eyes drifted to two familiar names. 'Red Guardian and Black Widow - viable pregnancy. Scans confirm that Vostokoff is carrying twin daughters. No complications detected so far into the pregnancy. Vostokoff has confirmed that she has suffered no cramping, or any sign of miscarriage.' "Holy shit, Steve. What if Alexei and Melina were the parents of Anastasia and her twin sister?" He asked quietly. Steve's expression was of grimness and concern. "That's more than likely, but Natasha never mentioned that Alexei and Melina had kids," Steve said hesitantly. Bucky knew the man didn't want to think Natasha had lied to him again. "There's more. On the second page, according to Dr Lyudmila Kudrin, only three women survived carrying the pregnancies to full term. Vostokoff ended up giving birth on June 18, 1995. It says here that she delivered two twin girls," Sharon said wearily, causing Bucky to frown. Bucky read more of the file, feeling his stomach roll in disgust, seeing that the project had been a partial success. They had put the project on hold in order to try and create more of the Super-Soldier Serum. He felt a cold sensation run down his spine, as he thought of Ana then. Maybe she was Alexei and Melina's daughter…possibly.

When the rest of the team had heard back later on what Sharon had discovered regarding the mystery woman, that had sent them on a trip to try and figure out who exactly her family was. Having Sharon reveal that there was actually a twin sister to the girl was an amazing lead. So, one of the Avengers took it into her own hands once she heard that – namely, Wanda. She knew what it was like to lose a twin, and if the young woman that they were looking after really did lose one, there was most likely a hole there that would never be filled. The least she could do is find out if they were right.
After that, they had searched all over the internet, from typical shit to the dark web, trying to see if they could find some sort of league to get them in the right direction. And soon, it wasn't long before they discovered something. The last name Liukin was associated with a Russian cemetery. Instantly, Wanda had assembled the team to fly to where it was, Fury agreeing to it nonetheless considering that it was for a mission. Thankfully the quinjet was quick enough to get them there a little faster than the normal airtime. Even so, arriving had Wanda shaking to see if this was real. They had showed up to the cemetery, stepping in and searching for her name. And it wasn't long before they did find it. Wanda had stood in front of it for a moment, feeling Clint let a hand rest against her shoulder. 'Angelina Aleksandrovna Liukin.' This was it. This was the twin. They were right. They had looked all over to see if there was even a possibility of another Liukin, but funnily, there were none under the names they were looking for. It was mainly strong Russian names that had been attached to it. "I can't believe it," she whispers, looking down at the grave, kneeling down. "There's a lot more to this woman than we realize…she was buried so deep." Clint sighs softly before nodding. "Sometimes that's the case with these things, but…this is good in a way." Wanda looks up to him. "Now that we know for sure that she exists, we have a DNA match-up. She is most likely in the International Data Base if she was dead. We were able to find her originally. If we can somehow get a blood sample from Maria, we can see if she's really Ana or not." Wanda stands, pulling her jacket around her tightly. It was still freezing cold here. "Don't you think that's a bit…sketchy? I mean both Steve and Bucky are there. I don't know how they're going to just get a blood sample off of her." "I'm sure they can figure it out," Clint assures. "We have two of the best super-soldiers in the world. They're not that dumb." "They're also not that smart," Wanda mutters. "True," Clint chuckles before helping her stand. "Come on, let's take some pictures and get this to Fury."
Tumblr media
As had been expected, they had gotten the proof to Fury as quickly as possible of the life of Angelina. And as they had expected, Fury had requested to Bucky not that long after to somehow get a blood sample from the mystery woman. To which both Bucky and Steve had sat down for hours, trying to figure out the best way to do so. Because who can just…do that? Eventually, though, they had settled on something that might spurt up one. "How about you just take her out on a date?" Bucky's brow raises in response. "You're serious?" "Yeah, why not? I mean, there's a high probability that you'll most likely get attacked because she has so many bounty's out for her right now. It's the best option you have that's legal in our eyes." He shrugs a bit. "Or you can just attack her mysteriously." "No," Bucky instantly states. His quick response surprised Steve a bit. "I mean, I…I don't want to hurt her more than she's already been hurt. You can tell from a mile away that she has gone through some shit." "Okay…don't worry, we won't do that," Steve reassures him, rubbing his back. "But we still need to get that sample, one way or another…I believe you'll be able to do it" Bucky sighs a bit before glancing up at him. "I haven't been on a date since the 1940′s." Steve snickers. "I think you'll be fine."
Tumblr media
After their conversation, it wasn't long before Bucky had asked Maria to come with him on a date, something he had surprisingly been quite nervous to do. Again, it had been so long since he had done something like this, but he knew that it was needed for what they were planning on doing. And she had agreed after a little bit, deciding that they would head out to a smaller restaurant in Madripoor, one that wouldn't attract so much attention. When he had come to pick her up at her apartment, he had waited downstairs for her to come. When she arrived, he felt his mouth drop slightly. You know, it was getting really damn hard to do this mission when the subject was so goddamn gorgeous.

I have this thing, that when an idea gets in my head, I either get it out on paper or it will create a traffic jam in my head and bugger up everything. So, not including my ongoing Fics, which includes the Gold Universe as part 4 is still nearly finished, I just need that last push on it. These are Ideas that can have anything from a few scenes, an idea, plots, or several chapters.
So I call this -
Winteriron WIP
(because what else 😅, I have a problem.)
In Fire & Flames - In this universe, Phoenixes and Humans live together, if one species dies then the other will too. When a Phoenix does for good, lots of natural disasters happen, starts with Tony'parents dying and then Rhodey, who is also a Phoenix, finds Tony. Who is now familyless and dying as lone phoenixes tend to die. There are several different kinds, and they come in pairs general. Golden and Ice, for example, Golden are high in magic, Ice tends to protect, especially the rare Golden, it's more tribes than individuals, there is no requirement for who likes who. It's surprising how much making a few other Avengers phoenixes tweaks things here and there, this actually goes up to the fight in Siberia and is one of the bigger WIP's. (26k)
Tumblr media
Flash of Gold - Avengers are shifters or humans with magic, and they think they know what Tony is. They believe he is a human with magic, but they notice that he has some shifter traits, which is odd as shifters can't have magic in this AU. Only in very old stories and myth. Tony, however, is a dragon, which are myth. Instead of being like most shifters a, a human that shifts to something, he is the reverse. It only has a few scenes. Full shebang, team as Family. Steve is even a good guy. James is brought to the tower after being found and slowly integrated into the group and is wondering wtf Tony is. (13k)
Tumblr media
The Operative Program - Howard was never meant to be a father; he was a weaponsmith. So he took the red room and the wolf spider programs and decided to create himself an Operative that he hoped would be the darker side to help Steve when he found him. Two sides of the same coin, one for the light and one to work in the shadows, Tony would be under Steve's control, he would be a weapon for the man who only picked up a shield. (Also assassin Tony is just fun.) Tony in this is a mash-up really, Tony traits, like Gold but different as he has been trained his entire life, the only reason he has developed a sense of self is Rhodey and the fact his parents died at 17. Rhodey got there first after the car crash, getting to Tony before anyone else who knew what he was could potentially claim him. Tony definitely collects people. Yinsen and Vanko for example. Chapters from Ironman up to Avengers (not complete). But enjoyed myself rewriting some out of sequence chapters, so there is a nice big scene in Siberia. (15k)
Tumblr media
Another Persons Wish - Now this was based on a post I saw going around. Person A is married to Person B. Person A is looking back at their life and wondering if they should have married B, etc. So, A is offered a wish. Poof. Goodbye Marriage. Person A is Steve, and the story is from Tony, person B's POV. It goes from Tony planning his anniversary(because I was apparently extremely angsty when I started this!) to waking up in the past, alone and wondering what the fuck has happened. 6 chapters entirely written. Chapter 7 is in a different file and in progress when I dabble on it. (30k)
Tumblr media
Tarnished Gold - This is an AU from my AU AU XD. Basically similar set up to the Gold Universe, Tony escapes Hydra Captivity but is brought in by Rhodey instead of spending 2 years on his own cleaning up Hydra. He only spends about 7 months before Rhodey convinces him to come in. Few other tweaks here and there but that is just side. Rhodey and James are pals too. The plot here is Howard and Maria are brought back from the Dead and Rhodey is trying to work out how to tell them what has happened and that he can't just bring them to Tony, because he doesn't know if Tony will remember them yet. Tony is a little less 'give me orders, and I'll gut you, and more 'orders made things easier'. I basically flipped his and James reactions from the original Gold universe. Tony is more in need of a hug. It's very loosely put together. I wanted something where Howard was a good dad to offset the fact I kind of made him Hydra in the next piece, and I wanted a good family man Howard with the bringing the parents back because I love reading fics that bring Howard and Maria back. (9k)
Tumblr media
Sins of The Father - Arno has just buried his father. His mother is in a coma, he is 20 and mourning his life now he's expected to take on the business when a visitor flips his work upside down worse than the phone call about the crash. His Father? Part of a program that summoned a creature known as a Void Walker. (A creature from the Void Loki fell into, the only native species to that area, most others can't survive the void, so Loki will read as Void Touched and is 'To Be Protected' because I think that could shake up the Avengers section nicely.) Oh and he has Howards DNA. So Arno is freaked that he has a brother, that someone released and sent to him and Arno is 100% sure he is not meant to deal with severe traumatised half-human assassins that could be his kid brother. That is how Arno meets Tony and becomes very invested and turns up big brother protective instinct to 13. When summoned they're tired to a person and has to obey orders, that person was chosen as The Asset under the idea he can't disobey, which obviously fails as Winter does everything to protect Tony, including freeing him and sending him to Arno. His last order is that Tony is not allowed to go looking for or rescue Winter, which I think will be some nice drama when Bucky gets brought in (I really like this one) It has mostly set up but 2 scenes for in the future, Tony finding Coulson threatening Arno in IM2 and the data dump. (21k) (in this S/S Helped is Yelped, I'd fix it, but I've been working on this post forreeever)
Tumblr media
Blood and an Arc - This came about from reading the Tony is a vampire fic and noticing that when he gets turned, generally Tony hates being a vampire. There aren't many where he comes back from Afghanistan a vampire and goes, huh... Well. This could be interesting. Loosely based on Vamp the Masquerade but I've tweaked it because my brain takes ideas and then runs off madly into the sunset. It is however utterly all over the place, some from Ironman and then random out of sequence chapters that I'm unsure about as I hadn't slept in a very long time on writing them and Tony went kind of Spike-ish calling James 'Pet'. I do like the idea of Tony fully embracing his changes. Yinsen never intended Tony to live, so he did something extra whilst turning him, so he is not an ordinary baby vampire and is convinced (justifiably so) that if he meets any other vamps, they'll try to kill him. In notes have Sam considering being a werewolf who works out Tony is a vamp and freaks out, because Vampires vs Werewolves and Tony is utterly confused and tells Sam he smells of mint (seriously, insomnia) Sam is baffled to find out the centuries of hatred that is claimed to be instinctual is actually taught. Sam gets kind happy he has a Vamp friend. (20k)
Tumblr media
The Original Plan - This sets up around the end of the Mandarin (because honestly, I prefer working with Tony that has powered, especially because James has the serum and I personally think it would expand life span more than shown in Endgame. So I like evening things out and powered Tony is my jam) Tony has a bunch of plans, and they go awry. He doesn't see why and has zero clue what's going on. It's because no matter how well he plans this out, he's caught up in other people's plans. Steve is a little more "End goal justify the anything and everything." In other words, getting Bucky back is his plan and everyone are just pawns in said plan. I've taken that tactical genius title and also pushed him a little darker. After Ultron, he brings Wanda on for 3 reasons. 1 Precedence. 2 Fixing Bucky. 3 Making sure Tony doesn't find out about his parents and making sure he is on the team and available to fix Bucky's arm. That last bit changes things as instead of pulling away from the Avengers, Tony fully moves into the compound(just after AOU, it's not good). There will be no accords and Steve will find Bucky and just move him in and general plans on telling no one about the Winter Soldier. I summed up a chunk of AOU in this format, and I liked it (in an angst and pain fashion.) But it's quite long for a screenshot, so here's a chunk. Bucky is being brought in soon, but as it is, Tony is not having a good time, there might be Wanda conditions in his mind that Steve can use to convince Tony to do things... Also, because he is living there, I couldn't justify Sam not noticing there is something very wrong, so he is asking questions he didn't in canon as Tony's PTSD is more in his face living together you know? ********
Fresh tears welled in Peter’s eyes, spilling down his face. “But Papa’s gonna suffocate if they don’t get him down soon, and I can’t let that happen, Uncle Bucky, I just can’t! My dad needs him!”
“Sam said that they’re doing everything Tony can think of to try and conserve Steve’s oxygen,” said Uncle Bucky. “The main thing they’re worried about at the moment is that he’s gonna get too cold, so—”
“But lowering his body temp would help him not need as much oxygen,” said Peter. “And it would lower his metabolism a bit too. Maybe they could tell Papa to—”
“Peter, I’m pretty sure they already know that,” Uncle Bucky interrupted. “But since Steve’s controls are completely useless, he can’t do a damn thing except sit there and watch the planet go by beneath him. And he’s still okay at the moment, but if he gets much colder—”
“He won’t be able to stay conscious,” Peter whispered. “And then… even if they do figure out how to get his power back up, he won’t—he won’t be able to—”
Which means I have even less time than I thought.
“Yeah,” agreed Uncle Bucky. “According to Colonel Rhodes Stevie’s already starting to shiver, so… Tony’s afraid he won’t be able to communicate too much longer with him.”
Peter slumped back against his pillows, his fingernails digging into his palms and cringing at the gross rattling sounds that he made with every single inhale. Papa had told him after the trial mission that the only part of being in space that he hadn’t liked was how cold it was, and the thought of his poor papa up there all alone… slowly freezing to death…
I can’t just lie here and do nothing! I have to help him!
“Then I’ve gotta fix it,” he said quietly. “If I can find the buried code that’s causing all the trouble with JARVIS and get rid of it, then JARVIS would be able to come back and Papa could reenter the atmosphere.”
“No, you don't have to fix it,” Uncle Bucky said sternly. “What you need to do is get as much rest as you can so that when Tony does get Steve home, they’ll be able to see you right away. Okay?”
“But—!”
“Nope,” said Uncle Bucky. “Now, since we’ve used up all of our chess time yapping, I think you should take another nap, yeah? Before Ms Sarah comes in here and yells at me?” He leaned forward, shuddering as he lowered his voice. “When Stevie and I were kids she used to yell at me when she thought I was keeping him awake too much, and I don't need to go through that again.”
Peter crossed his arms, sticking out his bottom lip. “Hmph. Fine.”
“Good.” Uncle Bucky got to his feet, patting Peter on the top of his head. “Try not to worry too much, okay, kiddo? We’re not gonna let Stevie die up there without a fight. I promise.”
“Uh huh.”
But as soon as Peter heard Uncle Bucky’s footsteps heading down the hallway, he reached over to the bedside table, grabbing the datapad that he’d left behind. Before the coup, Peter had been able to break through the Air Corps firewall in less than three minutes, so he figured it would be even easier this time.
Which it was. Less than a minute and only a few commands later, Peter had once again broken into the main Air Corps database.
Stifling a yawn, Peter headed straight for the virtual deposit box where Dad had tried to safeguard JARVIS’s programming. Since Peter had designed most of JARVIS in the first place, he already had his own unique set of passwords and encryption codes that allowed him full access to the program without compromising Dad’s information, or even revealing that he was in there in the first place.
All the better to poke around with.
“Okay,” he murmured, his pencil flying around his thumb as he read over the lines of code. Just as he’d suspected, everything that he’d programmed since Dad had installed JARVIS’s initial matrix was perfectly fine, which meant there had to have been some monitoring program installed on his computer way back before he first started that somehow flagged JARVIS as something someone needed to look at.
Which meant that Peter had to go way back to the beginning of JARVIS’s design and search through every single line of code for anything out of the ordinary.
It was long, tedious work, made even worse by the fact that Peter couldn't seem to keep his tired eyes open for longer than about fifteen minutes at a time. It wasn't until after he’d eaten dinner and taken yet another nap that he managed to finally stumble upon a coding line that didn't seem to fit with his usual methodology. Dad had always told Peter that every person who wrote code had their own rather unique “coding language”, kind of like how each person’s handwriting was just a bit different from everyone else’s, and there was one line inserted about thirty lines from the bottom that on second glance, just didn't seem to fit.
The line that ended with the command: ЦLtЯ0П
“Ultron?” Peter whispered, narrowing his eyes at the odd-looking command. “What’re you up to…?” He tapped in a few more commands, trying to decipher what this Ultron’s base command code was, but all he could find was that single code.
Whoever had inputted Ultron into the matrix had only figured out how to halt JARVIS’s commands, not actually replace him.
But now that JARVIS was halted, that meant it was probably only a matter of time before someone tried to get Ultron to replace him.
Peter tipped his head back, inhaling a deep breath through his nose. Grandma had increased both his oxygen flow and the dosage of one of his medicines earlier in the day, worried about his increasing heart rate, and the last thing Peter wanted was to somehow alert her to what he was doing.
Suddenly the entire screen went blank, returning about three seconds later back at the same place where Peter had started. Peter bit down hard on his lip as he tapped in various commands, checking on both his father’s and grandfather’s passwords, and finding nothing.
Someone was attempting to mess with the code, and it wasn’t Dad. And since no one had seen Grandpa in weeks, Peter was pretty sure it wasn’t him either.
“Then I’ve gotta stay ahead of them,” Peter said. He pushed himself up to a sitting position and cracked his knuckles, taking a quick peek at the door to make sure no one was coming. Uncle Sam and Uncle James were still at the base, no doubt trying to help Dad in any way that they could, and Uncle Bucky was sitting out in the living room with Grandma trying to offer her support. Ms Sharon would be stopping by to check on him soon, once her shift at the hospital was over, but at the moment, Peter was unsupervised.
“Oh, you think you're smarter than me, do ya?” he murmured, scrunching his nose as his fingers began flying across the datapad. “Well, let’s just see about that, hmm? ‘Cause I’m pretty sure that you're wrong. I’m one of Langara’s best-kept secrets.”
And now, Papa’s life was depending on him.
The full chapter will post on Monday, July 6th 😊

A Family Affair
Characters: Frank Castle x black!reader
Summary: Based on this imagine
Warning: Implied smut, a lil angst, language
Tumblr media
“Wow,” you exhaled, after Frank skillfully coaxed out multiple orgasms from you.
“That good, huh?” Frank chuckled.
Instead of giving him the satisfaction of agreeing with him, you mushed his face instead. “Whatever, Castle.”
Frank rolled on top of you, trapping you in between his hands. “Fine, don’t admit it. I’ll just have to prove it to you again, sweetheart,” he whispered against your ear.
You pushed against Frank’s broad shoulders. As much you wanted another round, you had to get ready for your meeting and he knew that. “Frank,” you uttered his name as a warning.
He took that as his cue to stop and gave you one last kiss. As he sat on the edge of the bed and put on his sweats, you kissed the scars that decorated his back. Some old and some new, but each reminding you of his dangerous life.
“Water,” he asked, making his way to the kitchen.
“Yes please.” You responded, searching for something to wear temporarily. When you settled on one of Frank’s many black henleys, you heard Frank’s voice and another’s. Automatically, you reached for your gun and carefully approach the kitchen.
Frank had his own gun drawn out and who he was pointing at left you in shock.
“Dad, what are you doing here?”
“Dad?” Frank repeated, looking back at you.
Tony Stark was standing in your living room and had one of his Iron Man blasters pointed at your vigilante boyfriend.
“No, the question is what the hell is the Punisher doing in your apartment half-naked?” The impromptu meeting of Tony and Frank left you speechless, which left time for Tony to take in your lack of proper clothing. “Did he do that to you?” Tony ready to blast Frank once he saw the bruises on your thighs from you and Frank’s lovemaking.
“Trust me buddy, she wasn’t complaining.” Frank smirked at Tony.
“Frank!” You admonished him, not wanting to give Tony anymore reasons to actually shoot him.
Frank finally put his gun on the island and held his hands up in surrender. “Sorry, baby.” Then he faced Tony and walked to him slowly like he was approaching a cornered animal. “I’m Frank and I’m Y/N’s boyfriend.”
“BOYFRIEND?” That revelation made Tony retract his blaster and stew in his thoughts for a moment. One thing your dad never was speechless, well except with Peter, but that was different.
Scared that maybe he was maybe experiencing an aneurysm or a heart attack, you called out his name. It was enough to shake him out of his shocked state. “You two dinner tonight at 7 and no backing out!” Tony yelled and then stormed out your door.
--
Hours later you and Frank were getting ready, but you weren’t talking to each other. After Tony left, Frank asked you why you didn’t tell him and when your ‘I don’t know’ wasn’t sufficient enough, he left as well. Now you were watching Frank struggling with putting his gold cufflinks on.
Deciding to help him you gripped his wrists, despite the grunt he expelled. “You knew I had a hard time growing up. I got tired of the group homes, so I ran away. I survived by pickpocketing people. One day, I saw Tony Stark and saw a big score and was able to steal his wallet. Eventually, he found me, and the rest was history. I can’t explain, but there was some insane connection with him, and the team and they just took me in. It just naturally progressed to call him dad. And the reason for not telling you is, I thought you would run once you knew my connection to them.”
After clasping his cufflinks, Frank pulled you into him, resting his chin on top of your head. “You could’ve told me. I couldn’t leave you even if I wanted to.” Standing on your tippy toes, you kissed Frank and whispered, ‘I love you.’
Looking at the time, you decided you had enough time to thank Frank properly. Just as your knees sunk to the floor, FRIDAY announced that the car Tony sent was downstairs. Reluctantly, Frank pulled you to your feet and escorted you downstairs.
“Okay, since Stark is your dad, does that mean that Potts is your mom?” Frank asked on the car ride.
You held Frank’s hand and laughed. “Oh no, Steve’s definitely the mom. Him and Tony argue like an old married couple anyway.”
“Please don’t tell me you call the Captain America mom?” Frank questioned.
“Oh, hell yeah I do! And he may act like he hates it, but he secretly loves it.”
--
Once you were in the elevator, you became more aware of Frank’s nerves. His hands were shaking, and you grabbed one to stop him and kissed his cheek. “You’ll be fine, I promise.”
Frank squeezed your hand and kissed you back, just as soon as the elevator door opened, revealing Peter.
“Parker, what the hell are you doing here. Don’t you got homework?” You asked, ruffling the boy’s hair.
“And miss you get in trouble? No way. This time Steve and Tony actually agree for once. Nat, Wanda, and Thor think everyone should mind their business and let you date him. Sam, Rhodey, Clint, and Bruce are mostly siding with Steve and Tony, but are willing to give him a chance. Vision doesn’t care either way and Bucky is out on a mission,” the kid you considered a little brother rambled on.
Frank leaned down to your ear and whispered while eyeing Peter suspiciously, “Is he on drugs or something?”
“No, he’s always like this.”
Peter led you into the lion’s den, you called the dining room. Once the three you caught everyone’s attention all conversation ceased. Frank let go of your hand and went to each person to shake their hand and formally introduce himself. You could tell Tony was already over it, but at least Steve had the decency to fake it.
As expected, he saved Steve for last. Frank always talked about how he admired Steve and what he did for our country. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Captain Rogers.”
“Please just call me Steve.” Then, he motioned for Frank to sit down.
Tense was one way to describe the mood as everyone sat down. No one knew how to steer the conversation. “This isn’t some type of jungle fever is it?” Tony blurted out.
A chorus of Tony’s was said across the table and the accused showed no remorse. “Listen, I just need to know. He’s not just about to use our girl, because he wants to try something new.”
Despite Tony being an asshole Frank kept his cool. “No sir. Y/N could be any damn color and I still choose her.”
The same moment you kissed Frank’s cheek was the exact same moment Bucky walked in. “What the hell is this?”
You turned to Peter and whispered yelled to him, “I thought you said he’s on a mission!”
Peter shrugged his shoulders in obvious surprise, “I thought so too! Maybe he, um, finished early.”
“You think?”
During your exchange with Peter, Frank and Bucky were staring each other down, readying their bodies for a fight.
“This just got interesting,” Tony said before sipping his drink.
Not wanting to deal with a fight, you pleaded with the more reasonable man. “Buck, please. Not right now.”
Bucky’s murderous gaze softened once he looked at you. He nodded his head in agreement and took a seat between Sam and Steve.
“So, what’s a murderous madman doing at our dining table?” Bucky asked nonchalantly as he prepared his own plate of food.
You rolled your eyes, because you knew Frank wouldn’t be able to back down. Thankfully, Nat interrupted whatever Frank was about to retort back. “You were in the marines, right, Mr. Castle?”
Frank turned his gaze from Bucky to Natasha and responded to her. “Yes ma’am and please just call me Frank.”
“As long as you stop with the ma’am stuff,” she smirked back.
From there, the conversation stayed on more safe topics until Steve decided he wanted to get to the meat of it.
“Frank, you know why you’re here. Y/N is like a daughter to us and most of can’t seem to shake the idea of you dating her.”
Holding your breath, you looked at Frank as he set down his silverware and thought about his answer. “I get it, sir. She’s your little girl and I’m a wanted criminal, but Y/N’s my everything and that means something, Captain. There was a time I thought I wouldn’t feel this way again, but she proved me wrong.”
Bruce spoke up for the first time. “No one’s doubting your feelings Frank. We all can see it-” A grunt from Bucky slightly interrupted Bruce, but he continued on quickly before Frank could get his hands on him. “But you killed people and not out of self-defense, but you targeted them.”
Frank leaned back in his chair and rolled his tongue around his mouth. “Have you ever been betrayed by your country? The ones who were supposed to have your back since you risked yours to keep it safe.”
You stared at Bucky, pleading with your eyes for him to understand where Frank was coming from. Our country may have not taken everything away from him like Frank, but they sure did make him out to be the bad guy when he was the one done wrong.
“It doesn’t explain why you killed all those people!” Tony interjected
Having enough of Tony’s bullshit, you stood up and threw your napkin down. “Really, Tony? All this coming from the person, who didn’t talk to his best friend for 2 years because he protected the man who was brainwashed to kill your family,”
Frank gripped your wrist and try to pull you down to your seat, “C’mon on baby, don’t argue with your father.” But instead of following his advice, you wrestled your hand from his grip and continued.
“Or what about Ultron and Sokvia, huh? Did anyone come out unscathed in that? Because I remembered the team was broken up for two whole years, because you felt guilty about dropping a whole country, since you wanted to play mad scientist!”
Steve backed out of his seat, “Ok, that’s enough!”
“No, fuck that! He wants to bring up Frank’s past, let’s bring it up, since you know so much, dad. Did you know it was a CIA official, his commander, and his best friend that had his family killed?”
Tony’s face dropped, but that didn’t stop you. “Of course, you didn’t, because sometimes you can be a selfish, self-absorbed asshole. Yeah, you save the world and that’s the big picture, but what happens after? what about the organized crime taking over the streets? What about all the dirty cops and corrupt politicians? Oh, I know what you do, you throw a lavish fundraiser and that makes everything better. I know Frank’s methods seem inhumane and extreme, but unless you lived on those streets you wouldn’t understand. I’m just asking you to not judge him too harshly, because what would you do if someone took Pepper and Morgan away?”
Done with your rant, you moved your hand in front of Frank signaling him to grab it. “C’mon babe, let’s go.” Frank followed your lead to the elevators, and just as you were about to enter you heard Tony’s voice.
“Wait!” Both of you stopped in your tracks and faced Tony. “You’re right, Y/N. I don’t know how tough the average person has it, but I do know I don’t agree with Castle’s methods.” You opened your mouth to say something back, but Tony raised his hand to stop you. “You said your piece let me say mines, okay. Although, I may disagree with your boyfriend, I see the way he looks at you and he loves you. So, I propose this: you bring him around for our weekly family dinners, so we can get to know him and after you and I come up with some ways to help the community. Sounds good?”
Before the smile reached your face, you rant to Tony and gave him a hug, thanking him and apologizing to him for your hurtful words.
“You won’t regret it, Mr. Stark,” Frank called out as you hugged your dad.
Tony pulled you from his front to his side, still hugging you, but with a clear view of Frank. “Castle, I promise if she so much gets a papercut because of your extracurricular activities, you’ll be the one being put down.”
Frank smiled at Tony’s threat and then offered to shake his hand. “Fair enough.”
Finally, with all the drama put aside, the rest of dinner went on smoothly. Now all the veterans at the table were comparing their experiences in the service, with the occasional joking of how one’s branch was better than the others. Only time it would get awkward is when Bucky would have a smart remark to whatever Frank would say. Frank would brush it off, but Bucky pushed him one last time and Frank decided to open his mouth. “Man, you must’ve messed up real bad.”
Bucky cocked his head to the side and crossed his arms, “Excuse me?”
Frank cracked his neck side-to-side, rolled his shoulders, and leaned on the table, “You dated. You and Y/N, it’s obvious. And if you ended good, you wouldn’t be taking pot shots at me the whole night, so you messed up. Now either you shut up or we can do something about it.”
“Finally, I’ve been waiting for this showdown the whole night!” Tony claimed. From the corner of your eye, you could see both Pepper and Steve hitting Tony in the back of his head.
Bucky followed suit and leaned on the table as well. “I doubt it’ll be an even fight. You don’t have those guns you love so much.”
Frank cracked a crooked smile, “I don’t need a gun. I prefer knives. I like to get up close and personal with my enemy.”
“Me too,” Bucky claimed and both men stood up out of their seats.
“Oh, hell no!” You interrupted the two. You pushed Frank back down in his seat and rushed to Bucky, “In the kitchen, now!” you gritted through your teeth.
Before you knew it, you felt your fist flying towards Bucky’s face. “Really, Bucky? This is how you’re gonna act?”
Easily, Bucky shook the punch off. He was about to say something charming to get on your good side, but then he noticed the tears welling in your eyes. “Hey, hey, what’s wrong, doll?”
“You, Tony, Steve, heck everyone. I need my family to get along with Frank. Even you, okay. I love him and he’s gonna be around for a while.  So, either get with the program or don’t ever talk to me again.”
Buck had to admit himself he was being an asshole. To see you with another guy was hurtful, but to see you with a guy that he could identify with and that could open up to you in a way he couldn’t broke his heart.
“Alright. I’ll be nice for now. But as soon as he messes up, I’m kicking his ass and never letting you go.”
Ignoring the last part of his statement, you ran to give Bucky a hug. “Thank you,” you whispered into his chest.
Reluctantly, Bucky let go of you and guided you back to the dining room. With bated breath, you watched Bucky approach Frank.
Frank stood up, warily eyeing Bucky when he stretched out his hand for a handshake. “Sorry for being an asshole earlier.”
Tentatively Frank shook Bucky’s hand. “It’s okay. I’d probably act the same way if I were you.”
Glad the two men finally made up, you let out a deep breath. You were about to go sit down until you heard Bucky threaten Frank. “You hurt her, I’ll kill you.”
“He’s joking,” you told Frank, hoping to defuse a potential argument.
“I’m not.”
“Fair enough,” Frank responded before shaking Bucky’s hand.
“Now that’s everything copacetic, can we get to that basketball game Y/N promised? I gotta teach the youngin a couple of things.” Sam asked, reminding you of your bet that you could beat him at basketball no matter what team you’re on.
“Ok, let’s do it, but you got Buck on your team,” you bartered. Both men outwardly groaned, upset that they’re always paired together.
Looking up at Frank, you asked, “Want to play?” Leaning down within an inch from your lips, he replied, “Oh yeah,” before giving you a sweet chaste kiss.
“Oh god, no! None of that please. Just no!” Tony complained, disgusted by your pda.
For good measure, you gave Frank a deeper kiss, which made Tony gag. “Ready to hang with this crazy crew?”
Frank shook his head yes, and you pulled him towards the gym, hopefully for the first of many games.

ONE HUNDRED FIFTY THREE - CONVINCING (3)
LEGACY: A Tony Stark Daughter Story
FULL STORY MASTERLIST
ENDING THREE MASTERLIST
< previous
Word Count: 1,570ish
Summary: Fury tries to convince Bailey to let him recruit Peter.
~~~
By the time two am rolled around, my hair was up in a messy bun, there were eleven empty coffee mugs scattered around the place, and all the screens had new suit designs for Peter up. Glancing down at a sketch, I reached out and picked up the coffee mug that rested in front of me. I brought it to my lips and tried to tip some down my throat, but nothing came. I let out a long, tired sigh as I set the mug down. I leaned back, closing my eyes and rubbing my temples.
“When I saw the light on and the coffee machine up and running,” an old voice sounded from behind me, “I thought that we were being haunted.”
“If my Dad was going to haunt us, it wouldn’t be by working in the lab,” I joked.
“True. Very true.” Steve pulled up a chair besides me and sat down. He looked around the room. “I’m still not convinced that you two aren’t related by blood.”
I spun my chair around so that I was facing Steve. “You wouldn’t be the first. And I have a feeling you won’t be the last.”
Bucky and I had a small cottage built for Steve on the edge of the property. So that he could have his space but that we could all still be close. He frequently stayed in the room we had set aside for him in the Facility though.
“What’s got you up so late?” Steve inquired. “Is the kid in trouble?”
“No, I’m just trying to make up for the lack of me not being there for him.” I covered my eyes and looked down. “Gosh I sound just like him. I’m turning into my father.”
The old man chuckled. “That’s not necessarily a bad thing. But why do you feel that way? You’ve been mourning too. Not in the way most of us expected, I might add, but still.”
“Everyone has their own way of grieving.”
“Yes but, Bailey, I know you. I’ve seen you—“
“You knew me, Steve. So just, please, stop.” I shook my head as I turned back to my work. “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” I mumbled.
“Bailey…” He sighed.
“Drop it Steve. I’m not your problem anymore.” I began sketching. “What are you even doing up this late?”
“I couldn’t sleep. Sometimes it helps if I’m not alone.” I nodded. Steve stood up and set a gentle hand on my shoulder. “You should get some rest... Please be better than Tony in that aspect. We don’t need another Ultron incident.”
“Good night Steve,” I said curtly, not even bothering to look up.
He sighed before leaning down and placing a kiss on my forehead. “Good night B.”
I kept working until a fell asleep not even a short while later. Bucky came in soon after, FRIDAY having told him that I had fallen asleep in the lab, and took me back to our bedroom. I woke up, curled into his side. He was already awake, brushing through the ends of my hair.
“Morning,” he sweetly whispered before holding a kiss to my hairline. I smiled and cuddled into him more. He chuckled. “I’m guessing last night didn’t go so well.”
“What would make you think that?” I mumbled into his bare chest.
“Well, since you went straight to the lab when you got home…”
I sighed. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. I figured you needed your space. So I just had FRIDAY wake me once you were asleep, if you hadn’t found your way to our room.”
“Steve came by last night… I feel like I wasted time designing a cottage for him. I think he’s slept there once.”
Bucky laughed. “I think he’s just missed us… For us, he was gone for seconds. But for him it was a lifetime.”
“Yeah… It was his choice though… He didn’t have to stay back.”
“True. What did you two talk about?”
“Grieving.”
“What? Why?”
“He mentioned that him, and others, are confused about how I’ve been mourning Dad and Nat… I may have gotten a bit mad at him… It’s still hard.”
“I know. It’s hard for him too. He’s still mad at himself for how it all went down.”
“I wish that I could move on faster… I just can’t… He promised me a future and then took it from me in a blink of an eye…”
“I know, sweetheart…” He kissed my forehead before resting his head against mine. “And he knows too.”
The rest of the day was spent training and doing paperwork. I also decided that I needed to start planning the opening gala for the new facility. Pepper and I agreed that Tony would have wanted us all to get together. The invite list consisted of government officials from all over the world. It was also also extremely important to Pepper and I that all those who fought with us that day were invited and their families. I choose a date about a month out. Pepper had promised to design the invites and have FRIDAY send them out by the end of the week. I was about to shut down my office and head to the kitchen for dinner when FRIDAY came over the speakers.
“Miss Stark, an unknown number is calling,” she announced. “They would like to video chat. Would you like to answer it?”
Confusion filled me as I wondered who could possibly be trying to video chat with me. I debated for a long few seconds before telling FRIDAY to put them on the screen. Low and behold, Nicky Fury showed up on the other end.
“Stark,” he greeted.
“Fury,” I responded. “To what do I owe this pleasure?”
“I need you to get Parker to answer my calls.”
I lightly chuckled. “I don’t control the kid.”
“Yes, but you are basically his sister.”
“I’m not his sister. And we’re not on the greatest of terms right now.”
“And who’s fault is that?”
“Definitely not helping you now.”
“Stark. There’s something going down and I need his help.”
“And you can’t ask any of the rest of us? Anyone else from ‘your team’? Or are the Avengers not your team anymore since the originals are either, dead, retired, or somewhere in space?”
“I need Parker on this. The rest of you need to continue doing what you’re doing, rebuilding the Avengers.”
“I’m not going to, he’s supposed to be going to Europe in a few days. He needs the break, don’t pressure him.”
“I have a report that something’s going to hit Europe in a few days, and it’s convenient that he’s going to be there too.”
“What do you mean?”
“Does Ixtenco, Mexico ring any bells?”
“There were some weird readings from there a few days ago. But it was just a cyclone.”
“The locals say the cyclone had a face.”
“Of course they did.” I sighed, looking down and shaking my head. “Please don’t ruin Peter’s vacation, he really needs it…”
“Can’t make any promises.” Fury stated before he hung up.
I was confused and irritated to say the least, but I really didn’t want to worry about it right away. A few days past before I noticed anything weird. Tony had created an augmented reality security and defense system a few years back, EDITH was the name. Even Dead I’m The Hero. He had told me that it was only to be used if danger was eminent and he was dead. I was in my office when I received a notification that EDITH had been activated and was targeting someone. I quickly went over to my screens.
“FRIDAY, who activated EDITH?” I asked.
“It seems that Peter Parker did,” FRIDAY responded.
“What?! How did he get a hold of EDITH and who is he targeting?”
“He was targeting one of his classmates. It seems to be an accident and has been dealt with.”
“I can’t even! Ugh!” I slammed my hands on the desk. “Who gave him EDITH?”
“I sent EDITH to Fury.”
“You what?”
“Tony instructed that EDITH be given to Fury to give to Peter at the time of his death.”
“And he didn’t tell me.” I threw my head back. “Why am I not surprised?” I let out a frustrated puff of air. “Get a hold of Fury on video chat. Don’t let him hang up.” A few seconds later, Fury’s face appeared on the screen.
“Miss Stark, to what do I owe the pleasure?”
“I thought I told you not to hyjack Peter’s vacation?”
“And I remember telling you that I couldn’t make any promises.”
“Why didn’t you tell me about receiving EDITH? And why did you feel it was necessary to give EDITH to Peter now?”
“He needed a push.”
“Let him be a kid, Fury! Too many of us have already lost our childhoods because this life was forced upon us. He doesn’t need to save the world today! There are plenty of other people who can do that right now!”
“I don’t think you’re emotionally stable to save the world right now.”
“I wasn’t saying me.”
“Parker’s already here and he needs a push.”
“Don’t pressure him into being the next Iron Man. He doesn’t need that.”
“He’s stronger than you think.”
“I understand how strong he is, Fury. I just believe he needs a break.”
“And I don’t. He’s the one that needs to do this… I understand you’re concerned, but I know what I’m doing.”
“Please don’t let him die. Cause if he does, you’re a dead man, Fury… He’s part of what I have left of Dad… He’s the reason Dad agreed to the time heist… Please don’t let him die.”
She might be confused, lost, scared, but it’ll be a cold day in hell if she thinks he’ll give up that easy. He’ll do anything he has too. Help her remember, or make her fall in love with him, all over again. But what if it’s not him that she’s getting close to this time? What if it’s a losing fight? Is he supposed to watch the woman he loves, fall for someone else? Like hell, is he letting that happen.
“We’re going to put you to sleep for this.” Shuri looks down at Y/N.
“Okay.” She swallows, nodding.
“Just can’t have you moving.” Shuri smiles.
“That’s fair.” Y/N’s hand grips tightly to his. “Just don’t fuck me up more.” She smiles at her friend.
“Oh that’s sweet you think you could get worse.” Shuri laughs.
“I’ll be here when you wake up. I’ll keep an eye on her.” Clint chuckles, leaning down to kiss her.
“Okay. I’ll see you when I wake up.” She gives a shaky smile. Cho slowly pushes whatever drug into Y/N’s IV. He winks at her once before her eyes grow heavy and seconds later, she’s asleep.
“I’ll do everything I can to get her memories back.” Shuri assures him.
“I know.” He swallows, nodding.
“I can’t believe you Barton.” Shuri’s head shakes when he looks up. She works on the hologram screen in front of her.
“What?” He looks around confused.
“She has brain damage and you don’t think to call me?” She scoffs. “I would have been on the first flight out.” She gives him a pointed look.
“I’m sorry. I was so scared I was losing her. I wasn’t thinking.” He sighs.
Looking down, his hand still holding hers, even though she was fast asleep. Her hair splayed across the hospital pillow under her head. She’s everything he ever wanted, needed in life. She gave him hope for something so much better than he ever imagined.
Looking at her, peacefully asleep. He knew it and couldn’t deny it. He was always going to be hopelessly, tragically in love with her. There was no chance he would ever un-love her in this lifetime.
“I can accept that. But Bucky should have called.” She turns glaring at Bucky. His eyes widen, they slowly cut from side to side as he tries to sink farther into his seat.
“She didn’t, well she, she didn’t remember me. I was sad. It was my fault.” He babbles.
“I don’t accept that.” Shuri shakes her head, T’Challa chuckles.
“How can you do this?” Clint looks over at her.
“That’s what took us so long. I had to make this transportable. What I did in my lab, back home, here.” She nods.
“How?” Peter peers over her shoulder.
“No. You did experiments on her and you know better. You should have called me.” She gives Peter a withering look. He shrinks back.
“They were noninvasive.” Peter shrugs mumbling.
“Barton, I thought we had a deal?” Phil sighs from where he leans on the open door.
“I’ve had my hands full with your daughter, she’s a little meaner now.” He smirks.
“I heard. Punching Stark, scaring the pants of super soldiers, and did I hear right, threatening other female agents?” He lifts a brow.
“She stomped on my foot for that.” Peter huffs.
“Good.” Several voices bite back. Peter shrinks farther back.
“You know she punched Stark back in the day, right?” Steve looks over at Phil.
“So that’s twice?” T’Challa grins.
“No I think it totals out to like four times.” Peter nods. “She punched him for having them arrested. For getting Bucky triggered. For putting them in a prison, and then again for putting them in a prison.” Peter explains.
“Damn I love her.” Clint grins, looking down again.
“Didn’t she slap him for something?” Wanda wonders.
“Ultron!” Nat laughs.
“She slapped Thor too.” Clint nods.
“Fractured her hand.” Steve chuckles, nodding.
“She said it was like hitting a wall.” Nat grins. He watches Shuri work, clasping Y/N’s hand between his.
“Barton. Still not married?” T’Challa asks.
“Not yet.” He chews the inside of his cheek.
“They’re Wakanda married though so that’s a close second.” Nat replies bitterly.
“So bitter.” Bucky brushes her hair back.
“You knew?” She looks over at her husband.
“I was there.” Bucky chuckles. Nat nods, she moves, pulling her chair away from her husband. “Now I’m on her list too.” Bucky nods.
“We’ll we knew she was going to kill you at some point.” Clint smirks.
A total of six hours. They waited, till Shuri gave Cho the okay to let her wake up. They waited another hour for her eyes to finally open. Everyone sat on the edge of their seat, waiting, hoping.
“How do you feel?” Cho asks when her eyes stay open.
“I have the worst taste in my mouth.” She makes a face.
“Sedative.” Cho nods, handing over a foam cup of water.
“Any pain?” Shuri wonders.
“Mild headache.” She shrugs, sipping her water.
“Would you like something for it?” Cho wonders.
“Not yet.” She finishes her water. Her shoulders slump and her body language follows.
“What’s wrong?” He leans forward, hand on her thigh.
“I don’t remember.” She admits softly. The room shifts, covering their own let down.
“It won’t happen right away.” Shuri sits on the edge of the bed. “Your brain is healed, but now it needs to start working at full compacity again. It might take a few days.” She assures her. Y/N shrugs, she holds up her hand to Cho.
“Can you take this out. I’d like to go home.” Her voice filled with disappointment. Cho does as asked, the team exchanging a look around them.
“Y/N.” He sighs.
“I have a headache, I’m tired and I would like to just sleep in my own bed.” She waves her free hand. “It was a long shot we knew that. Maybe, maybe I’m not supposed to remember. Maybe things are supposed to be different.” She doesn’t make eye contact.
“Be different?” Bucky looks around, Clint sits up straight confused.
“I don’t know.” She shakes her head, slipping off the bed. She moves past him, stepping around her dad. She’s gone without a backwards glance.
“What do you think she means?” Peter swallows, looking around.
“Doesn’t matter.” Clint stands.
“How so?” Phil wonders.
“Cause I’ll be cold and in the ground before I let her walk out on this life she has.” He nods, moving between people, stepping around Phil he follows after his girlfriend.
[Steve]
As my tired eyes scan over the various piles of paper covering my desk, I sigh, pushing myself back in my seat slightly and running an anxious hand through my hair. In the past few weeks since returning from Romania, my life has been a complete whirlwind of chaos. For the most part, though, no one knows it. Bucky is the only person I’ve let in on all of my plans. Today, however, I plan on breaking my silence and dropping the news on the rest of the team.
I run my hands over the stack in front of me, pushing the sides in a bit to tidy it up. As overwhelming as this has all been, it’s all felt right to me. I know I’m making the correct decisions for both me and Willa. I just hope everyone else will see it that way, too.
Taking a mental inventory once again in my mind, I assure myself for the millionth time that everyone is home and available at the tower today. Reaching over and picking up my phone off the desk, I pull up the Avengers group chat. With shaky fingers, I begin to type out my message.
Steve: Since everyone’s around today, there’s something I want to let you all know. Meet up in the lounge at noon.
Hitting send, I glance at the clock positioned at the top of my screen. I have about an hour until noon. While I wish I could’ve just said, “Let’s meet right now,” I wanted to give everyone a chance to get ready. Only a few moments later, there’s a knock at my door. “Come in,” I call, wondering who could already be wanting to talk to me.
The door opens slowly to reveal Peter, a questioning look on his face. “H-hey Cap,” he greets, tugging on the hem of his blue button-down. My posture immediately softens when I see who’s come to chat, and I offer him a smile, leaning back slightly in my office chair.
“Hey Peter. What’s up?”
The boy continues to play nervously with the fabric of his shirt, holding his phone in the other hand. “Well, I just got your text, a-and… I’m assuming it’s something important? What you’re calling the team meeting for, I mean,” he clarifies, waving his device slightly in the air. “And I was wondering, am I supposed to come? If all the adults are gonna talk about something, then- then I’d be happy to watch Willa while you guys- well, you know,” he rambles. Humming, I nod. I guess I didn’t think of that until now, but I would like to break the news separately to the little girl. The way I’m going to explain things to the others is different from how I’d like to flesh them out for her.
“That would be great, Peter. Thank you,” I graciously accept his offer. “It’s something I’m gonna tell Willa about when it’s just the two of us, so it would be perfect if you could watch her while the rest of us talk.” The teen nods, seeming content with this plan. “I guess, then, that I might as well tell you now, what’s going on. Since you won’t be there when I tell the rest of the team,” I add.
Peter’s ears perk up at this, and his eyes rise to meet my own. “O-okay,” he says, stepping further into the room and closing the door behind him. “What’s going on?” he asks softly.
“You can come sit down,” I say with a slight chuckle, motioning to my bed. Peter returns a nervous smile as he makes his way over to it, sitting himself down on the very edge of the mattress.
“So,” he tries again. “So- what’s up?”
I sigh, suddenly feeling unprepared to disclose the news to the kid. “Well,” I begin. “Sometime after Willa, Bucky, and I returned from Romania… I came to the decision that Willa and I are going to be moving out of the tower.” Peter’s eyes widen at the news, and a slight frown forms on his face. “After everything that’s happened with Tony, I just feel like the safest option would be to remove him from Willa’s environment.” Peter nods understandingly, and a hint of relief washes over me. At least he seems to be getting it. “On top of that, things are just awfully hectic around here. I’m not sure that’s the kind of setting I want to raise her in.”
“W-wow. I…” Peter trails off, appearing to be at a loss for words. “That’s definitely not something I was expecting. But I totally get it. And I support you; I support you guys,” he says. “Whatever’s best for Willa is definitely the right choice.” A look of compassion crosses Peter’s face, and I feel my entire body softening up to his grace. What an absolute gem of a kid. He never fails to amaze me with his heart of gold.
“And there’s something I wanted to talk to you and Wanda about, specifically,” I continue, earning a nod from the boy. “The apartment I’ve settled on is located across town, in the same complex as Bucky’s. I was lucky enough to find one with three bedrooms. One for me, one for Willa, and a spare. The plan, for now, is to have the spare as the guest room; you could come and visit whenever you want. But I also want both you and Wanda to know that if you would like to come and live with us, you know, permanently, you’re more than welcome to.”
When I became serious about moving out and bringing Willa with me, the idea of inviting Wanda and Peter was already lingering in the back of my mind. Peter specifically because he’s Willa’s best friend, her almost-brother. But in a broader sense, both of the teens because I frankly don’t know if the tower is a place for any child to be growing up in. And then on top of that, Wanda had her traumatic experience while in captivity, and I made the conscious decision to commit to taking care of her, in whatever capacity she needs. I have no idea what either of the kid’s responses will be to this offer, but it only feels right that I make it.
A pensive look forms on Peter’s face as he remains silent for a few moments, processing the information he’s been given. “Y-you mean, we… I could come live with you? Like, instead of living here?” he asks slowly, as if he doesn’t believe what he’s been told.
“That’s right,” I confirm. “I know how close you and Willa are, and I know how hard it was on you when we were away in Romania. Aside from that, I know things in the tower aren’t always easy. What I want to create for Willa is a real home. There’s no pressure one way or the other, but if you want a home like that, you deserve one just as much as she does.” The expression on the young boy’s face shifts from confusion to sadness, surprising me at the sudden and unexpected change.
“I… Cap,” Peter whispers weakly.“You know I can’t.”
Troubled by his words, I furrow my eyebrows, asking, “What do you mean?”
He sucks in a breath, his gaze falling to his lap. “It… you know he’d… Mr. Stark would…” His familiar words break my heart, and I nod understandingly, wishing he’d look up at me. “Th-thank you, Cap. I don’t- I don’t know what to say,” he mumbles warily. “I-if I could… I wish it… but… I can’t.”
“Peter. Look at me,” I murmur seriously. The kid takes in another shaky breath, his big brown eyes glancing up to connect with mine. To my despair, they’re lined with tears. I wish I knew how to make things easier for him. He’s just so caught up with Tony that he doesn’t see any way out, even if it’s staring straight at him. “Tony means a lot to you, I get that, but he doesn’t control you. If you want to come with us, he has no say in it,” I try to reason with him.
“B-but he’d… Cap, you know I can’t,” he states again, a little bit more urgency present in his voice this time around. “Mr. Stark, h-he’d- he’d… I don’t even know what he’d do, but it would be bad. It would be really, really bad,” the poor boy rambles anxiously.
“He can’t do anything to you, Peter, other than get upset with you. It’s your decision. He might not like what you do, but that shouldn’t matter. Tony’s behavior, especially recently, has been… it’s been unacceptable. Out of control. You shouldn’t let him influence you.”
“I-I know he’s been out of control, but… that’s the whole point. If I make him upset, who knows what he’ll…” Peter sighs, shaking his head. “I can’t, Cap. I’m sorry. If I could, I’d… I’m sorry. I’m really sorry.”
“Peter, hey,” I say, my voice falling to a mere hush. “Are you… afraid he would hurt you? You know we wouldn’t let him do that, right? You know I wouldn’t let him do that?” His gaze falls again, and he squeezes his hands together, his shoulders slouching sadly.
“I-I… I have to go. I’m sorry, Cap. I’ll come visit lots, I promise.” The boy rises to his feet, and I stand as well, reaching an instinctive hand out.
“Hey, wait,” I try, but he’s already making his way over to exit.
“’m sorry,” he says again before opening the door, ducking out without another word.
Tumblr media
Standing outside Willa’s door, I take a deep breath, placing my hand on the cool metal knob. The meeting went surprisingly smoothly. Everyone was saddened to hear about my decision, but they were all understanding. Tony stayed silent through the entire thing. The look on his face was hard to decipher; I couldn’t tell if it was remorse or just bitterness. Clint and Thor both agreed to help me and Bucky move furniture into the apartment. I’ve decided to buy new and leave what we already own at the tower. Hopefully we’ll be able to come back and visit often. I’m surely going to miss my friends and this strange place I’ve learned to call home. Bruce said he would be more than happy to come by regularly to check up on Willa’s health. He also mentioned that he had found a therapist who might be able to help her begin to work through some of her trauma, which would be a great thing to start thinking about as we make this transition.
I had the same discussion with Wanda after the team meeting that I had with Peter. She was deeply touched, but politely declined, which I completely understood. After she finally disclosed her trauma to me back on the night we came home, I was able to help her connect with Natasha about the issue, who has since taken over in a lot of ways to address the situation and further care for the teen. Since then, she and Nat have become extremely close, and Wanda’s decided that she would feel most comfortable staying here with her. In the end, I’m just glad she’s finally getting the help and support she deserves. And of course, she agreed to come visit often. She said she would really miss us both, and I could tell she meant it.
So now there’s just one more person to tell.
I knock gently on the door once before opening it. Willa and Peter are sitting on the floor, playing with a set of blocks Bucky got for the little girl. Right away, I notice that her soft brown hair is pulled back into two low pigtails, something Peter must’ve done while we were in the meeting. The pair look up at me and I smile at them, earning two in return. “Hey, we just finished up,” I tell them as I walk over and join the two down on the floor, sitting cross-legged beside Willa. “What’re you up to? Playing with some blocks?”
“A'phabet,” Willa tells me, pointing to the pattern she’s made out on the floor.
“That’s right, sweetie; good job. Do you know all the letters of the alphabet?” She thinks for a moment, nodding slowly.
“Can sing them in the song,” she answers.
“Yeah, she got them all right when she sang it for me,” Peter confirms. I smile at the little girl, rubbing her arm encouragingly.
“That’s great, Willa. I’m so proud of you. Remember when we first played with the blocks and you didn’t know where some of them went?” Willa nods, smiling back up at me.
“P-p'oud of me,” she beams shyly, leaning against me carefully. I wrap an arm around her, pulling her up so that she’s sitting on my lap.
“Yep. Always proud of you, lovebug,” I tell her. “And it looks like Peter did your hair, huh? That was awfully nice of him.”
“Ponies!” the little girl beams, her voice soft like always but still full of excitement. Peter grins over at us and nods.
“I think I’m getting better at them! At least, I hope I am,” he says with a laugh.
“Well, I think they look just wonderful,” I say very matter-of-factly, causing Willa’s cheeks to turn pink. Glancing back up at Peter, I ask, “Hey Pete, do you think Willa and I could have a little time alone? I wanna let her in on what’s going on.” A knowing look forms on his face and he nods, rising to his feet.
“Sure thing, Cap,” he agrees. I can feel the Willa tense in my arms slightly as her friend makes his way to the door, turning to wave before exiting and closing the door behind him. Now with just the two of us, the child in my arms grows even more restless, her little body quaking against my own.
“Hey, you’re alright,” I murmur, rubbing her arm soothingly as she looks up at me with wide eyes. “It’s nothing scary, doll. I promise.” But I know my words do little to comfort her.
“Was I bad? Don’t beat me,” she whimpers, and my heart sinks. Slowly, I begin to rock her back and forth, hoping to show her that she’s still safe with me.
“I won’t hurt you, sweetheart. And no, you weren’t bad. You’re not in trouble, Willa. Not in trouble at all. I just have something I want to tell you, that’s all.”
“N-not scary?” she asks fearfully.
“Not scary,” I tell her, linking my pinky up with hers. At this promise, she relaxes slightly, though I can tell that deep down she’s still on edge. “This is something I’ve been thinking about since we came back from our trip with Bucky,” I begin, not exactly sure how I want to break the news to the little girl. “I’ve just been thinking that… with everything that’s happened since we, well… since I took you in, I just decided that… we need a place of our own.”
Willa blinks. “A place of our own?”
“Mhmm. And I found one. It’s over by where Bucky lives. An apartment, for the two of us.”
“Ap-partm-ment?” she repeats back the word. I nod.
“It’s sort of a house. Like the one in Romania, only the one I found is a lot nicer. There’s a kitchen and a living room, and bedrooms and bathrooms, everything we need. And it’s just for us.”
Willa looks thoughtfully up at me. Her reaction is hard to read, though at least it’s not bad, from what I can tell. “A house… just for us? A house like… like in th-the books you read me before bed? Where little kids live… with their mommies and daddies? A h-house for… for us? We… you…” To my surprise, the child’s big green eyes fill with tears as she finishes her question, “… you’re gonna bring me home?”
Tears well up in my own eyes as I look down at her, her face filled with an overwhelming sense of hope and wonder. “That’s right, sweetheart,” I murmur, bringing a gentle hand up to stroke her cheek. “I’m finally gonna bring you home.”
His Second Chance Part 6
Bucky x Reader
His Second Chance Masterlist
Bucky comes back from Wakanda with Steve, ready to begin his recovery from his days as the Winter Soldier, but there’s one thing he doesn’t take into account - you.
Warnings: Fluff, angst, language, mentions of bad family, needle (briefly mentioned for a second with little detail), a smidge of violence.
Word count: Approx 2400
Masterlist
In this one, Bucky feels terrible about what happened and wants to fix it but he doesn’t know how.
Okay, so we’re just going to admit that Infinity War and End Game didn’t happen and Bucky’s brain had been de blendered by Shuri and for some reason still has his silver arm (sorry that one makes me weak and I always defult to it).
Please don’t hesitate to leave suggestions or thoughts! TAG LISTS ARE OPEN! (My forever list and His Second Chance list)
“(Y/n)?” Steve knocked on the door a few times. “She even in there?” Sam asked. “FRIDAY said her vitals are reading from her bedroom, so she’s definitely in there, Sam.” Steve nodded, knocking on your door again. “C’mon sweetheart, we just wanna check up on you.” Steve called through the door. “(Y/n), sweetheart, please.” Steve called.
For fuck sake, just leave the poor girl alone. Bucky sat on the floor on top of his mattress, back pressed up against the bed frame with his ear against the wall. He could hear you shuffling about now and again, the odd sniffle and whimper. He could also hear the click clack of your keyboard along with the sound of your mouse, you were drowning them out with a videogame. That sounded like you.
 You’re a fucking idiot, the poor girl has locked herself away because of you.
Perhaps you should be the one to coax her out of her room and apologise.
No, she’s terrified of you, it’ll make it worse, you’d be better to just leave.
Don’t leave, you can’t leave her when you haven’t said you’re sorry or said goodbye.
“Can you please, shut the fuck up?” Bucky growled lowly, hitting his head against the wall that separated your rooms.
 A thump caught your attention. You knew where it came from, it was Bucky on the other side of that wall, probably beating himself up over the incident. Truthfully, you weren’t scared of him and you might have already forgiven him because you knew it wasn’t really Bucky that meant to scare you or hurt you, it was the voice in his head, the damage Hydra did to him that caused it. “(Y/n), open up!” Sam was taking a turn at your door now and you let out a deep sigh.
 Getting up from your swivel chair at your desk, you padded over to the wall and sat on the floor, pressing your ear up against it, your hand coming up to rest against the wall. “Bucky?” You whimpered out.
 Bucky heard you on the other side of the wall. He even considered ignoring you for a moment but knew you had come to him and it wasn’t fair to ignore you. “(Y/n).” Bucky sighed your name out, wondering if you’d even heard him. “I’m sorry.” He apologised, a bit louder this time. “I’m so sorry.” Bucky clutched at his long brown hair, pulling on it a bit too hard, the hurt eased the pain in his chest. So goddamn sorry. “I’m sorry too.” Came your little voice, confusing Bucky. What? Why is she sorry? You’re the one who fucked it all up. “I pushed you too far too fast.” You went on. “Please don’t be sad.” Bucky blurted out. “It wasn’t you. I promise it wasn’t you.” Bucky pulled his hair a bit tighter, squeezing his eyes shut.
 “It wasn’t you. I promise it wasn’t you.” Bucky sounded so desperate, so broken. You let out a sigh and sat in silence for a moment. “(Y/n), please open the door!” Sam was getting exasperated. “Sam, calmly, she’s not gonna open the door if you shout at her.” Steve started squabbling with Sam. “Well I know better; she’ll open the goddamn door if I’m out here long enough.” Sam argued. “No, she won’t, she’ll answer the door if we’re gentle with her.” Steve started going into protective Steve mode and putting on his Cap voice. “Don’t coddle her, she ain’t a child.” The two of them continued arguing and you heard a pained groan from the other side of the wall. I feel you.
 Getting up from the floor, you padded over to the door and swung it open quickly. Both soldiers paused and looked at you, Sam looked terrified as you gave them both a death glare. “(Y/n).” Steve began, voice gentle. “Are you alright?” He asked. “Does she look alright to you? Cause she looks like she’s about to gut us both.” Sam pointed at you. “I just want to rest, please.” You sounded exasperated, exhausted from the anxiety and the entire situation. Without saying anything, Steve nodded and pulled Sam back from the door before you shrunk back into your room and collapsed on your bed. A muffled, “Thank you.” Could be heard from the other side of the wall as the silence set in and you began to fall asleep.
 “C’mon Buck, it’ll be good for you!” Steve exclaimed while Bucky rubbed the bridge of his nose. “No.” He replied simply in an frustrated tone. “Please Buck, it’ll help, I promise.” Steve tried to pull Bucky along by the hand the way that you did, but he wasn’t having any of it. “No, I’m not seeing some therapist.” Bucky protested, yanking his hand away.
I don’t want to see a therapist; I want to see (Y/n) and apologise properly.
“No, it’ll help if you go see this therapist about the voice in your head.” Steve encouraged. “It won’t just help you, but it’ll help your little girlfriend too.” Sam teased. “Not my girlfriend.” Bucky growled. I wish she was though; I wish I could kiss her and hug her, tell her how wonderful she is, make lov- Nope, no, now is not the time to think about that!
“Whatever you say pal. Look, just think about it, alright?” Steve sighed, giving him a sympathetic smile and handing Bucky the business card for the therapist he was recommending. “She’s helped a few of the others too, helped Wanda and Pietro process everything that happened after Ultron, helped Tony with his anxiety, she’s helped Bruce with his anger, I’m sure she can do the same for that voice in here.” Steve poked the side of Bucky’s head before backing away and leaving it at that.
Maybe it was worth a shot, if she could help stop the voices so you could think fucking rationally for once.
Bucky sighed and stared down at the little paper in his hand before retreating back to his room.
 ***
“Here, it’ll make you feel better.” A woman who resembled an older version of you leant over your tired body. “It might hurt a little, only for a second.” She smiled gently down at you. “No, please.” You half heartedly protested, too drugged up and sleepy to respond properly. “Darling, it only lasts a second.” She smiled, holding up the needle before slowly approaching your arm. “Stop.” You begged, tears streaming down your cheeks. “Stop!” Your yelling was useless, body limp, heavy and difficult to move as the needle went into your arm. Oh god. It burned, it burned so much.
 A blood curdling scream ripped through your throat as you burned from the inside out. “Should’ve knocked her out completely before we did it.” The woman sighed, watching you wriggle and writhe under the straps that held you down onto the workbench. “It’s in her, give up the cash.” She held out her hand. “Not yet, I want to see it work once it’s set in, then you get the money.” An older man stood next to her, dressed in a tan suit. “That wasn’t part of the deal, Pierce.” She sneered. “It is now.”
 “You’re worthless! A freak! An experiment!”
“You injected me with it!”
“Shut up! You worthless child, I did it for the money, not you!” Your mother screamed you down as you cowered in the corner. “You’re tainted, ruined, a failed test!” She raised her voice, throwing kitchen utensils at you with every word. “That’s all I am to you?” You screamed back. “That’s all you ever were!” She responded, chucking a knife at you, but you were too fast, your abilities kicking in. The knife stopped short of your chest, only by a few centimetres.
You saw red, your mother had just tried to kill you.
“Your father left because of you!” She went on as you used your fingers to manipulate the energy field that held the knife still in front of you, twisting the knife around without even touching it. Her eyes went wide and you stared her down. “Don’t talk about dad.” You growled. “Dad left because he couldn’t stand the thought of you taking money from Hydra so they could use their experimental serum on me.” You frowned. “He hated you for it! He hated what you became.” She screamed.
“So did you.” And with the flick of your wrist, the knife hurtled towards your mother, the blade narrowly missing her face and smashing through the wall behind her with the force of energy you put behind it. She screamed, stumbling back from the force and ducked as rubble cascaded down onto her and when she looked up, you were gone.
 ***
You came bolt awake in a cold sweat, heaving for breath, the voices replaying in your mind a few times. “Asshole.” You whispered as shook your head of the memory and sat up to look at the time. Three o’clock in the morning. It wasn’t like you were going to be able to get back to sleep, so you decided to get up and do something with yourself.
 With a pounding headache, you left your room in search of something to quell the pain. As you walked down the corridor, you realised the living room light was on still and you naturally assumed one of the boys had forgotten to turn it off. But as you entered the living room, you saw Bucky sitting hunched over on the edge of the sofa, looking up at your sudden arrival like a deer in the headlights.
 “Bucky.” You whispered. “What are you doing up so late- early- I don’t know.” You dropped your forehead into your hand and rubbed where the headache pulsed. It felt like your brain was two sizes too big for your skull. “Uh.” Bucky looked confused for a second. “Could ask you the same thing.” He responded simply. “(Y/n), I, uh. God, fuck me.” Bucky rubbed his face with his hands. “Can I sit next to you?” You asked, hesitantly taking a step towards him. “No.” Bucky face palmed. “Yes, please.” He almost squeaked out. Oh my god, you are so confusing Barnes. “That’s a yes or no answer question, not both.” You stated with a small smile on your lips. “Sorry, yes, please sit.” Bucky patted the seat next to him. God you’re bad at this, can’t even answer a yes or no answer question properly.
 Bucky flinched when you approached and sat down next to him. “I’m not going to hurt you.” You tried to reassure him. “I know that.” Bucky nodded, leaning away from you. “I’m scared to hurt you, though.” Bucky dropped his voice into a whisper. A look of realisation crossed your features for a second. Wow you actually admitted that out loud, not sure if that’s good or bad, Barnes. Please don’t take it the wrong way, please. “You can’t hurt me, Bucky.” You gave him a small, sweet, reassuring smile as you looked up into his bright blue eyes. “I promise.” You did a quick demonstration of your abilities by plucking the piece of paper from between his fingers with your energy. Bucky stared at you for a second, completely dumbfounded. WhaAAT? This whole time she could make things fucking float? “Holy shi- you’re enhanced?” Bucky’s voice peaked. This is mildly terrifying. You smirked, pulling the card into your hands with your energy field. “I suppose you could call it that.” You shrug.
 Your eyes look down at the little paper. A business card. It was the therapist you’d seen around that Wanda had mentioned a few times to you. “Steve set you up with her?” You ask, holding up the card with your hands this time before handing it back to him. “Yeah, wants me to go and see her.” Bucky sighed. “Think it’ll help?” You ask, sitting back against the soft cushions as you watched Bucky visibly relax a bit. “I don’t know.” He shrugged, following your lead and leaning back against the sofa. You reached out and hovered your hand over his flesh one, waiting for his approval to take it. Bucky intertwined his fingers with yours, his eyes fixed on your gentle gaze. “What do you think?” Bucky asked. Did you really just ask her opinion? Is that going to help? Oh god, she’s going to try and persuade you to do it. “I’m not going to tell you what to do, Steve might do that, but I’m not Steve.” You paused for breath. “Do you have anything to lose? The worst that will happen is that it won’t work or that you’re not ready to try it, that’s not going to hurt or kill you. But it’s ultimately your decision, Bucky.” You squeezed his hand a little. Bucky huffed.
 She’s right. She’s so fucking right. What have you got to lose? Her… But going to a therapist is doing the opposite of putting her in danger.
Should listen to her more often.
 “Maybe you’re right.” Bucky sighed. No, she is right you idiot. “No, you’re definitely right.” Bucky corrected himself. Good. You smiled up at him, not a ‘see I told you so’ sort of smug smile, no. It was a sweet, encouraging, gentle smile. Your cheeks warmed with a dusting of pink blush as you gazed up into his soft blue eyes. Oh god, she’s melting me. I’m melting. How does she do that? How are you so wrapped around her little finger? It’s that smile, that sweet little smile. Or the eyes, that’s probably it.
No, it’s her, it’s all of her.
“I’ll do it, for you.” Bucky whispered. Oh no, did you just say that out loud? You just said that out loud. Of course you fucking did. Urgh.
Oh but look at the flustered little smile, the blush, the way she’s looking away shyly. Oh so damn cute. Deeep breath. Bucky smiled at you goofily, getting lost in your beautiful features.
He would do it, for you. He knew he could.
——————-
You knew what the words meant when they were spoken. You held your son, Eli, in your hands and you didn’t want to make a scene in front of him, he just wanted to see time travel happen before his four year old eyes.
“Y-you’re kidding right?,” you felt your chest tighten so much, you thought you were going to have to call for medical attention, “Sam, take Eli inside... now.”
Sam didn’t argue. He knew what was about to go down.
“We did not go through all of this for you to just fucking leave... especially your son, Steve!,” you wanted to keep your voice down you really did.
“It’s not like that, Y/N. You don’t understand,”
He had the be kidding right? No way he was really thinking about leaving you just to live out his glory days and for another woman.
“You can’t be s- you know what?,” you turn to Bruce and shrug, “fucking send him. If you don’t care to stay here for me or our son, then I don’t care enough to try to fight for you to stay,”
Steve gave you a somber look, you told Bruce to just push the fucking button. You felt sick to your stomach, you couldn’t even bear to look at him.
“What am I gonna tell Eli?,” you whimpered to yourself. Bucky came over to stand by you, he wanted to comfort you, but he knew you wouldn’t allow it.
“Alright, 3...2...1,” Bruce hit a button and Steve was gone. A gut wrenching sob left and you turned to Bucky, “How the fuck am I supposed to tell my son that we weren’t good enough for his father?,”
“It’s not like that,” Bucky tried to reason. But you weren’t having it. How else was it supposed to be.
“I can’t bear to look at you either. How dare you defend this?,” you storm away inside and grab Eli in your arms, sobbing. Sam didn’t know what to say to make it better.
“Mommy, why are you crying? Where’s daddy?,”
“I- I don’t think... he’s coming back,”
—————
Eli was heartbroken. He cried himself to sleep, he wouldn’t leave your arms. You cried along with him. Held him tight, and whimpered through the nightmares.
You were shaken awake, it was Sam, “I need you to come here,”
Eli stirred awake in your arms and just looked at you, “Is daddy still gone?,”
“Yes, baby,” he whimpered at your reply but you had him curled in a throw blanket and he hid away in the crook of your neck.
You followed Sam into the living room and saw the golden haired man sitting on the couch.
“I hate him,” Eli cried. He didn’t even see Steve yet, he was just talking. He was so hurt. An impressionable little boy whose dad left him.
“Y/N,” Steve stood up and stepped toward you, only for you to take a big step back.
“Take him to the play room,” you told Sam. He simply nodded and Eli curled right into his Uncle Sammy.
It just left you and Steve standing in the middle of the living room.
“Were we not enough for you?,” that’s the main question you had on your mind. That’s all you wanted to know, “He cried himself to sleep for you,”
Steve’s heart skipped a beat and his chest hurt worse than any wound.
“Do you know how hard it was to hear him scream for you?,”
Steve watched a tear drop drip down to the tip of your nose, “Steve, he was in a type of pain that I didn’t know how to fix. Fuck how I feel, how could you do that to my son!,”
You didn’t even say ‘our’- he wanted to leave, he didn’t get that privilege of calling himself a father.
“You have to believe me it’s not like that, Y/N,”
“Then fucking enlighten me, Steve,”
“You’re both more than enough-,” he’s cut off by a scoff from you
“If that’s the truth then that thought shouldn’t have even crossed your mind if you truly loved us,”
He knew you were right but how does he explain these feelings to you?
“It’s not like that,”
“Well to me it looks like you still love her,” if looks could kill, he’d drop dead right there.
“I don’t feel like I’m good enough for you!,” he blurted out and you two are left standing there in a huge awkward silence. He raised his voice, and Steve never raises his voice.
“What-,”
“I don’t feel like I’m good enough for you,” he sighs defeated, “I feel out of place all the time. You run circles around her, no doubt, Y/N but-,”
Steve felt conflicted. He didn’t know if this was resolving the situation at all or making it worse. He wanted to cry, he wanted to scream. So much shit has gone down these past few years and he’s suffering from survivors guilt. Everything is in shambles for him.
“Our son is a gift! A miracle! A top tier blessing. But in that split second of taking those stones back- I felt responsible for so many things going wrong. I felt like I dragged you into all of this mess and caused you all this pain and I felt like had I not been in the picture, things would be better,”
Steve suffered from self-esteem issues. He hated himself sometimes, he blamed himself for a lot of things. He couldn’t stand to look at himself most days. He hid behind a facade and here it is breaking down, he’s letting himself be vulnerable.
“What?,” you wrap your arms around yourself. Confusion written all over your face. Steve stuffed his hands in his pockets and sighed, so disappointed in himself again, just another thing added to the long list.
“You’re the best thing to ever happen to me. Screw the serum, screw the world knowing my name- that doesn’t compare to you and the life we built,” he looked up at the ceiling, trying to stop the tears, “If I can prevent you and our baby from getting hurt then I’m going to do whatever it takes,”
“You don’t get to make that choice,” you wiped your face and turn your back to him, “You should have talked to me, to our baby boy. I knew what I was getting myself into when you asked me out on a date, I knew what I got myself into when you asked me to be your girlfriend. When you asked me to move in, when you asked me to marry you, when I stood in front of you at the altar and said I do!,”
Turning around on the heels of your feet, hands animated as you went on your tangent. He could see how tired your eyes looked, veins heavy and bright red, cheeks chaffed from wiping tears.
“I knew what I was getting into when I told you I was pregnant. God, we survived the snap for crying out loud, twice! Steve, I’m not going anywhere and it hurts to hear you say you were going to back and leave us- to reverse everything we have now,”
He didn’t want to be selfish. He thought he was doing the right thing for you two. He’s given you a look you’ve never seen before. Such conflict and hurt.
“I never meant to hurt you,” shaking his head defiantly, “But I can’t help but have this burden that I put you both through so much,”
You just shake your head, he should have known that if it was such a problem, you would have been gone a long ass time ago.
“Steve, Eli loves his dad. He didn’t see any of it as you hurting him or putting him through nothing. His dad is a hero and that’s all he sees! His dad protecting him and his mommy,”
You wanted to go back to Eli and just hold him, love him, let him know everything is going to be okay.
Steve sits down and holds his head, thinking deeply how this all had caused to hurt he wanted to avoid in the first place, “I just want you two to be absolutely safe... I don’t know what I’d do if I lost one of you,”
“You almost lost us both,” you pointed out, you didn’t want to patronize him, but it was true. “I think the worst has already come and we survived it all. We’re still here, Steve. If anything would have happened, it would have happened during the New York attack, or Ultron, we would have been dusted but we fought and fought, Steve. We’re okay,”
He got the guts to look at you and saw that you were right. He was stupid to think going back would make things better
“Now go see your son,”
———
He had to work up the courage to walk into the playroom to see his son. He heard his son say he hated him.
He stood in the doorway and saw how Eli cried in Sam’s arms. Sam trying to comfort the young boy as best as he could.
“Why’d daddy leave? Is it my fault?,”
Steve held in a sob as he heard his son’s words, “No Eli, it’s not your fault at all, I’m not going anywhere, I’m here” Steve hiccuped. He saw Eli tense up in Sam’s arms.
Eli sits up and glares at Steve. Lips trembling and fists clenched, “But you thought about it! And left us! So just go back!,” his little voice cracked and Steve shook his head. Seeing the look of our hatred in his son’s eyes shattered the world around him. Eli buries his face in Sam’s shoulders and cries harder than he’s ever cried.
Steve stepped into the room and came close to his son. Kneeling and resting an arm on himself, “But i didn’t want to go, that’s why I’m here now. It was a bad choice and I regret it so much. I never meant to hurt you, I love you more than life itself, you’re my son.”
Eli hiccups and shakes his head, “You don’t love me,”
“Eli, I love you so much it hurts. I thought me leaving would be better for you and mommy because I felt I hurt you enough. I don’t know how to explain it but, I thought it would be better for you guys rather than me cause more but it looks like I already did that,” he didn’t want his some hating him, not at all. He just wanted his son to understand, “I just love you so much,”
Eli heard his dad’s sniffling and mewling. He didn’t want his dad to be sad, but he definitely wanted him to know the damage he caused.
“You promise,”
“A thousand times,” he takes his son from Sam’s arms and Sam takes it upon himself to finally depart and give the two some space, Steve kisses his son’s head over and over, “I’m not going anywhere. I promise you,”
He hated that he made is son so upset. He swore to never do it. Eli was a miracle and he swore to always treat him as such. It took so long for you and Steve to finally have him- and he was born in the midst of the whole Thanos mess. He’d never let himself live this down.
“I’m so sorry. Dad is staying right here. I could never leave you or mommy...I just felt bad for bringing you all into this and I wanted to make it right,”
“I love you, dad,” Eli practically choked Steve with his death grip of a hug but Steve was okay with it.
He’s spend a lot of time making this up to them, but he’d do anything for you two. Moving forward was the only way to make things right.
Steve realizes he’s in love with Tony two months after Siberia. He sees dark hair, a flash of sunglasses from across the street and has an instant of joy, before disappointment sets in as the man turns around to reveal his face. The visceral feeling of regret and loneliness that follows is so sharp that Steve can’t breathe around it for a moment, swallowing everything down and hurrying away. Tony could always twist him up until he was yelling, laughing, screaming, smiling.
The moment that he recognizes the dark warmth resting heavy on his heart is like a punch to the gut. He feels unbalanced without Tony there to challenge him, draw him out of his dark thoughts and push away the guilt that haunts him at night.
He misses Tony.
He regrets a lot of things but acknowledging the complicated feeling that sometimes feels like it’s been inscribed deep into his bones only after all the pain and struggle sometimes overwhelms him with grief.
-
Tony always knew he loved Steve.
Steve smiled, chuckled and Tony thinks oh. okay. and soldiers on.
He loses Steve, (but he doesn’t and yet, why can he hear those words echo through him every time he closes his eyes) and the sorrow that engulfs him at the very thought drives him to reckless decisions, to Ultron, to more guilt.
He locks it away.
They fight and he’s shredding apart, piece by piece. He can’t find the words to explain, to make Steve understand, and he feels desperately and unavoidably alone.
Steve lies to him and he breaks.
When his breathing slows enough to let the last of the panic attack fade, Tony lets the cold seep into his bones and waits for his rescue. He takes all the pain and love that is now irrevocably tied together and locks it down, puts it in a box and never brings it out.
The package arrives and Tony doesn’t know how to react to the letter. He means to put the battered old phone in a drawer and never pull it out, but somehow it ends up in his pocket anyway.
-
Pepper knows. They get engaged and Tony refuses to lie to her. She smiles at him sadly and tells him, “I know, Tony. I always knew.”
Tony absorbs that revelation and then makes sure she knows that it’s done. It’s in that box locked away in his mind and it’s not coming back.
He’s done.
-
They go to space.
Tony says that he saw this coming and a strange mixture of vindication and sorrow is warring through him as he makes plans to save the world.
They lose and he survives, his deepest fear realized before him as he bleeds out on a strange planet, a caustic guilt and anger at the unfairness of it all gnawing at him. Focusing on getting home with Nebula helps; he’s always felt the most useful when he’s able to fix something, even if it’s just watching her soften around him as the days go by.
He meets Carol and he’s weary. Steve is there and all he can think is I needed you. Pepper cries into his shoulder and he grips her tightly, refusing to let go of this lifeline he desperately needs.
Steve questions him and Tony snaps, the resentment and bitterness clawing at his throat as he spits out the words that he had locked away so tightly. Steve could always get to him like no one else, rip him into jagged edges and reckless mistakes that he regrets a minute after it happens.
-
This isn’t how Steve imagined it going.
He stands through Tony’s anger with a quiet acceptance that surprises even him and refuses to let himself react to the vitriolic words Tony flings at him. He’s tired, so tired, and he just wants his team back.
He misses the easy camaraderie of those first few years. He dreams sometimes about finding Bucky earlier, bringing him into the Avengers. Tony fixes him and they stay a family, no fighting, no pain.
He always wakes up from those dreams with dry eyes and no matter how much the tears fight to come forward, he can’t seem to summon up the energy to let them fall. They lost and he has to move on.
But he can’t.  He tells Natasha what he’s learned the hard way: they don’t get the luxury of moving on. They lost. They didn’t keep their promise. They didn’t save the world.
Scott shows up and Steve hates himself for latching on to hope so easily, so quickly after everything that happened. He hasn’t seen Tony for years (not since the wedding that Steve stoically stood through, giving Tony the brightest smile and most genuine congratulations that he could summon through the pain choking him) and the thought of fixing everything alongside his love friend excites him.
Natasha gives him a knowing look as he throws on the leather jacket and he refuses to blush.
-
Tony’s happy and Steve can’t even bring forth the resentment he feels he should have after he sees the soft, loving look Tony gives his daughter. Tony’s retired, he’s done, and Steve has no right to drag him back into the fray when he has so much to lose.
He stands outside the compound, hopelessness threatening the fragile hope he had been building since Scott showed up on the cameras. But Tony comes back. He arrives with a solution and forgiveness that Steve never even thought to ask for. He can’t help the way his eyes soften, and his lips tug up in a fond smile.
They fall back into old habits of banter and flirting. Tony makes a comment about his ass and Steve feels something slot back into place in his chest. There’s a part of him that almost doesn’t want this to end because he refuses doesn’t want to lose Tony again.
He trusts Tony with his life, he always did, and they land in the 1970’s with a jolt and a plan. The silence before they can get into Camp Leigh threatens to overwhelm them, but they never were ones to shy away from the hard topics.
They talk. Finally.
Steve refuses to wait another moment and admits what he figured out years ago when he first lost Tony. Tony shakes his head, tears threatening to fall. “I always loved you,” he tells Steve, years of missed opportunities and longing reflecting back in his eyes.
It’s too late for them and Steve knew this already but god, it hurts to have Tony say it to him, no matter how soft and full of pain it is.
-
Tony snaps and Steve loses him for good.
He can’t.
He won’t.
He refuses.
This can’t happen.
He can’t live here with the anguish and the memories and Morgan who reminds him so much of Tony. Her curiosity, mischievous smile, and quiet strength under the weight of her father’s death showcase the absolute best of Tony and Pepper combined. She doesn’t know Steve outside of the stories her dad told her and Steve smiles at her through his tears.
He and Bucky are inseparable as they wade through the recovery process, and he’s overjoyed to have his friend back. The years between Shuri’s genius fixing Bucky’s battered mind and the fight for their world against a purple monster full of hubris and power gave them time to heal and talk and figure things out.
So when Steve volunteers to take the stones, Bucky just looks at him knowingly.
He never could hide anything from Bucky.
He lets Steve go with a smile and a quip, standing tall with Sam at his back and Steve knows they’ll be okay.
He stands on the platform, everything ready to go, his heart beating a constant echo of Tony Tony Tony Tony, his choice made long ago with a smile and a quiet we won.
He holds his breath and leaps.
