TikTok and Its Implications for the USA
It wasn't until just now, after my edible has landed, that I searched the 'tiktok' tags on tumblr. And there wasn't ANYTHING about the hearing.
Y'all. If you're not on TikTok right now, it's like 2012 Tumblr right now. I grew to love Tiktok because it reminded me of my experience on Tumblr as a young adolescent, learning to become a better person for the first time. So please, Tumblrian to Tumblrian, if you value Tumblr and the interactions and conversations you've had here, hear me out.
Tumblr is where I first started learning outside of the bubble I was raised in, started questioning things about the government and authoritative power structions, started learning about the world and the different people who live here. And Tiktok had their CEO give a testimony to the Commerce and Energy Committee in the US Congress.
The entire hearing was embarrassing, with the elderly politicians incapable of addressing the app by its own name (continually saying 'Tic Tac' instead) and stumbling over saying 'algorithm' (seriously who in the last 20 years hasn't become familiar with the concept and usage of the word? These politicians are so old beyond school and so in a bubble detached from the reality of every day Americans), despite TikTok being the largest social media, and even media influencer, since the invention of the Internet (or at least Facebook).
The committee members reeked of Cold War propoganda and demonstrated numerous microaggressions against the the CEO of TikTok, Shou Chew. Despite the newly dubbed 'Tiktok Daddy' Chew being from Taiwan, the bipartisan interrogators had no consideration that English wasn't his first language and barrelled through their barked questions. They steered the narrative to be about about China/the Chinese Community Party and the safety of children (which apparently China is responsible for, not the parents?).
Yes these same politicians who refuse to pass any legislation or introduced bills to protect American children from school shootings. America has had 100 shootings so far this year, before the end of March 2023, and is only growing.
There's so much to unpack in this and I'm sorry this is so long but I will make a second post to try to explain more if you have yet to have heard anything about the Tiktok hearing. They're likely going to ban Tiktok and hand the US government the ability to ban any social media in America that they want.

You and this person brought up a lot of thoughts about what's going on with the Palestinians for me and many others.
I try to keep my Tumblr a safe no stressful place but this is important. It's necessary for others to know and see what's happening. Thank you for teaching me.
https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPR7t812v/
It is so, so important to me that you willingly are taking the steps to get educated and I appreciate it so much.
The way she mentioned the Iran-Contra affair made me instantly nod along because I spent a whole semester researching American foreign policy in Nicaragua. Believe me, it’s a mess.
American government officials want to keep Israel going because they want a strong position in the Middle East. As the Zionist in my DMs argued, “Britain gave us [Israel] the land fairly” which is laughable when you look at the sheer number of lands that Britain has colonized and the number of lives lost at the hands of colonial powers. Britain “gave” Israel that land in 1918 with the British Mandate but it wasn’t until the Holocaust that many Jewish persons fled to Israel for refuge. Note: the Holocaust was fucking horrific. There is no excuse, justification, etc. for the absolute devastation the Holocaust has done to the Jewish, rRoma, and many more communities. There is no justification for genocide. Ever.
In 1948, the Nakba happened. 750k Palestinians became refugees as Israeli forces pushed them out of their homes. As the Zionist explained to me “we were defending ourselves” and “we only expelled the people who would prove to be a threat”. Hear me out; 750k people are a threat including the babies carried by their mothers? Who determined they were a threat? Why were the people of Palestine so angry that they fought against the encroaching Israelis?
After 1948, Israel was recognized by the UN as a nation and a rapidly growing country in the Middle East. But how? How were they developing so quickly? The West needed a stronghold in the region to “combat” the USSR’s presence in the region. WWII decimated Britain’s finances and manpower so the United States’ Marshall Plan came in to save the day. We basically said “we’ll give you money to rebuild, you give us your loyalty and promise to not become a communist”.
That’s it. That’s the Cold War. America and the USSR were two sides of an ideological and military struggle that spread through every region imaginable in the Global South. Nicaragua, Cuba, China, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Israel all can tie their roots back to the Cold War policies that we enacted. The United States is so intent on continuing funds to Israel because we want a strong hold in the region to keep an eye on every nation that surrounds Israel. Apparently, Joe Biden doesn’t care if Palestinians are murdered to achieve his goal.
I used this analogy to explain to the Zionist in my DMs and they kept skirting around it so I want others to read it:
A person walks into your house, points a gun at you and your family, and says get out, this is now someone else’s home. If you fight, you’ll probably die. If you win the fight, more people will come after you. If you concede and move out, you lose your home and have to leave in untenable conditions.
You live on the streets and try to support your family but the people that moved into your home have decided that they don’t want to look at you. They set up blockades and barriers. They take control of your water and gas and borders so they can monitor what food comes in. They treat you like a caged animal.
The person who stole your home walks by one day and sees you sitting on the street, hungry and scared and lost, and they decide to take pity on you and hand you one dollar. Look at that, they’re alleviating the struggle your life has become. The struggle they caused.
If someone did that to you, wouldn’t you be angry? Would you ever trust them again?

Emergency Visits (Bucky Barnes)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Fem!Reader
Words: 4.5k+
Warning(s): SMUT! Oral (Reader recieving), fingering, penetration, fluff!!! (Cringe warning too)
A/N: HONESTLY, idk why i had the courage to write smut but I did. THE ORIGINAL ONE-SHOT WASN’T SUPPOSED TO HAVE SMUT LMFAO also yall know I am a sucker for crossovers SOOO the timelime for TFATWS is off in this because Frank Castle is in here and I wrote most of this before episode 5 <3
Summary: Bucky, Sam, and Zemo need a place to lay low in while in the States and you're their most trusted person they know. What was not predicted was your vigilante friend needing medical help that same night.
--------------------------------------------
You were a former Avenger. You were highly trained in combat but your purpose was to help any wounded comrade or citizen when you and the team were called in. The fighting days were pretty much over for you after the last battle with Thanos. You still used your medical knowledge to work at the different hospitals in New York City and helped Matt Murdock or Frank Castle with any wounds. Rarely you'd help with some vigilante work, but you rather sit out and keep to a less violent life.
You were mindless watching whatever Netflix suggested to you on a breezy night in your humble apartment in New York. It has been a rather boring few nights for you compared to more hectic ones, given your vigilante friends weren't getting as hurt as usual and didn't need discreet medical care.
Your cellphone ringing next to you snapped your attention away from your binging of a John Mulaney  stand up show (good choice Netflix). You looked at the caller idea and swore your heart fluttered ever so slightly.
James Buchanan Barnes was calling.
You had spent many months in Wakanda with him as Shuri worked tirelessly to get rid of Hydras grasp on his mind. Your main focus was learning new information on medicine but you always made sure to visit Bucky. You both got pretty close... Light touches, lingering hugs, and often staring at each other when the other wasn't looking became a commonality. It was obvious feelings of love were blossoming for you, but you weren't fully sure if he felt the same.
After the battle you both stayed in contact, but he decided to reside in D.C. while you laid roots back in the familiarity of New York. You both made sure to visit each when possible, but it had been about a month and a half since you last saw him.
"Hey, Buck." You smiled, answering his call. "It's been a few days, usually you make sure to call every other night. Are you okay?"
"I..." You heard him sigh, making you sit up straight.  "I need a favor, doll."
"Of course, you know I would do practically anything for you."
"That applies to me too right?" You heard Sam in the background, making you chuckle.
"Yes, it does Sam. How are you?"
"I've been better, these past few days have been rough but I'll let Stare-a-tron explain it to you." You heard a wack and an 'ow' come from Sam.
"So..." Bucky started but didn't continue.
"So...?"
"So, have you paid any attention to the news regarding Munich?"
"I have now connected the dots."
"What?"
"You broke a certain terrorist out of jail didn't you, James." You groan. When you saw the news about Zemo you couldn't possibly connect it to Buck and Sam, but with this call and a need of a favor instantly made you realize.
"Technically, (Y/N), he broke himself out."
"Do I need to slap some sense into you? He killed King  T'Chaka. He broke up the Avengers--"
"I know, I know." You heard him sigh. You listened in closer and heard some background traffic noise that sounded like the streets of New York. "Listen, we need a place to lay low for a bit in the States and your the only person I can one-hundred percent trust. I can't tell you more on the phone but please-"
"Yes, yes of course Buck. You guys, well minus Zemo, are welcomed here for whatever reason. Do you need me to text you the address?"
"Nah, we are actually about to enter your apartment building."
"Well hurry up so we can decide on take out." You chuckled and hung up the phone. You only had to wait a few minutes before you heard knocking at your door. Wasting no time you opened the door as fast as you can and practically tackle Bucky into a hug.
He chuckled gently, "I missed you too, doll."
You released him from your hold and grinned as Sam. "Come here Sam, I haven't seen you in a few months." You pulled him into a less dramatic but friendly hug.
"Good to see you too, (Y/N)." Sam and Buck made their way into the apartment leaving you faced to face with Zemo.
"Hello." You greeted, offering a differential handshake.
"Hello, (Y/N). I hope all is well." He accepted the short handshake and gave an equally differential smile before entering your apartment.
"Welcome to my humble abode, make yourselves at home here. I have two bedrooms so we better discuss sleeping arrangements-"
"Easy, I call dibs bunking with you while Wings and Zemo stay in your spare room." Bucky interrupted.
"Hold up, why can't you stay with creepy-magee? I'm sure you two would love to stare at each other." Sam argued.
"Because I called dibs, isn't that right Doll?"
"He did call dibs, Sam." You shrugged and laugh at his look of betrayal.
You heard Zemo start to speak but Sam beat him to it, "You don't get an opinion." Zemo simply put his hands up and surrendered while the other two kept arguing about the concept of dibs.
"Anyways I'll order some Chinese food and we can discuss why you three are here over dinner."
--------
Your mind was blown.
Bucky and Sam filled you in on Isaiah, the return of super soldiers, why they needed Zemo, and the issues they had with the New Captain America. You also almost chastised Bucky for missing his mandated therapy session but decided to keep eating your food and let him continue.
"Wow, that is fucking nuts. Super soldiers, huh?" You sigh. As much as you didn't want to, you had a feeling they would need your help with fighting. After all you fought along with the original Captain America, so you picked up ways to fight super soldiers.
"Yeah, after Madripoor we need to lay low. Hopefully no one spotted us." Sam said, starting to pick up his dishes. Everyone seemed to follow suit and you were about to speak again when you heard knocking at your door.
"Hey, can you take these  for me? I'll go answer the door." You slid your stuff towards Buck who looked at you worried.
"Do you want one of us to answer the door with you?"
"Nah I should be fine, it's probably Mrs. Espinoza looking for her sons cat." You waved him off, making your way to the door. You unlock your locks and crack open the door.
There stood Frank fucking Castle, covered in an obscene amount of blood while using  the wall for support.
Tumblr media
"Hey..." He greeted with a hoarse voice and a weak attempt of a smile.
"Holy shit, Frank." You said barely above a whisper. "Fuck, can one you guys come here?!" You shouted, opening the door wider while taking one his arms over your shoulder.
"What the hell, (Y/N)?" Bucky looked at you and the blood soaked Punisher with bewilderment.
"I'll explain in a bit! Just help me take him to the couch. Sam go get my medical bag, it's in my closet in the room on the left! Zemo clear everyones stuff from the couch." You barked out orders while you and James carefully led Frank to the couch. When Zemo cleared it off and Sam came running out with your bag, you both laid him down on the couch.
With no hesitation you quickly wash your hands and prepare your equipment.
"Are you going to tell us what the hell is happening right now, (Y/N)?" Buck asked.
"I am also wondering why we have a beaten guy on your couch." Sam's face was full of worry.
You sigh and begin removing Franks clothes to look for any life threatening wounds. "This is the Punisher. If you haven't kept up with the more lower level news he is one of the vigilantes."
"That doesn't explain why he is here."
"I... I am friends with him and Daredevil. I patch them up so they can avoid the hospital." You see a bullet wound on his side, it was bad but it was manageable with an exit wound. "One of you hold him up so I can stitch his back."
Bucky immediately joined your side, using his enhanced strength to hold up Frank.
"You gonna introduce me to your friends here, (Y/N)?" Frank rasped. "I gotta know whose cold ass hand is touchin' me."
"I'll introduce you to them later, let me get you stable."
-----
After what felt like hours, you finished dressing a gash on his thigh. You peel of your bloodied gloves and get up from kneeling on the floor. You helped sit Frank up so he can get a good look at whose here.
"Frank, this is Sam Wilson and James Barnes. I worked and fought with them as an Avenger." You gesture to the two. You saw him eyeing Buck before giving you a knowing look. You both were friends after all, he knew of your feelings towards Bucky.
"Who's the guy in the pimp coat?" He grunted and gestured towards Zemo, who rolled his eyes.
"Baron Zemo. Escapee prisoner."
"Zemo? As in the guy who bombed the UN? Do you need me to-"
"No Frank, they need him alive." You chuckled.
"Well, it's good to put faces to names. Especially yours, James." Frank spoke, nudging you. "I'll get my spare clothes and rinse off the blood now, something tells me the guest room will be taken." You were going to protest but knew Frank was too stubborn to listen. The four of you watched him make his way to the guest room before closing the door.
"Oh so he knows about us but we don't know about him?" Sam arched a brow at you. Bucky stayed silent, clenching both his fists.
You sigh, "I am sorry for not telling you guys. I didn't keep my involvement with vigilantes away from you both on purpose, I promise."
"Can we trust the Punisher? Will everything be safe with all of us here?"
"You don't have to worry about me talking." Frank came out of the room in new clothes, using a damp towel to wipe his face. "(Y/N)'s stuck her neck out for me countless times. I owe it to her."
"If (Y/N) trusts you then we trust you."
"As much as I want to stay up, I think it is best we get some sleep. Tomorrow we can talk more." You stretch and yawn and everyone seemed to agree. Castle put a pillow on the couch and grabbed a spare blanket you had lying around.
"C'mon man you can have the bed. You look like you got the shit beaten out of you." Sam said.
"Nah it's fine. I'm a light sleeper. I can stay out here in case he," Castle pointed to Zemo, "tries somethin'."
"C'mon Buck, your rooming with me." You smile and grab his non-vibranium hand.
"I don't want to share a room with Zemo." Falcon groaned
"Bucky did call dibs after all."
You said goodnight to Sam, and gave Frank a quick hug goodnight before you and James went into your bedroom, a duffel bag in his hand.
James was feeling jealous. He didn't want to admit it but watching how friendly you were with Frank Castle made his feelings worse.  He could pick up the familiarity between the two of you and how easy you were able to talked to him. Frank was someone in your life Bucky didn't know existed.  How close were you to the Punisher?
Thoughts of you and Frank entered his head but he quickly tried to dismiss them. It made his chest ache just thinking about you and another man. Yeah, Buck was smitten with you. But the feelings of self-doubt and guilt always made it hard for him to confess. With the addition of Frank? Made it almost impossible.
"You can use the bathroom to change while I cahnge out here." Your voice snaps him out of his thoughts. He nodded silently, clenching his jaw, while entering the bathroom.
Your stare lingered at the door before you quickly put on a different set of comfortable clothes, discarding your previous clothes to the floor. You picked up on his sudden quietness and you hoped he wasnt truly mad at you. With a quiet sigh you slid under the blankets of your bed and waited for Bucky so you could get to bed. You and Bucky have shared the floor and bed before, and you were able to keep it together.
But after everything that has happened, after finally seeing him after almost two months, it made you feel nervous. You weren't sure if it was exhaustion or stress, but your feelings for Bucky suddenly felt overwhelming.
If that wasn't enough, you felt like your face was burning when he stepped out from the bathroom, wearing just his boxers and dogtags.
"I, uh, hope you don't mind. I found sleeping without a shirt easier to deal with nightmares. Helps cool me off."
"No, no. Don't worry at all Buck." You smile but it felt like your heart was going to leap out of your chest. He smiled briefly before he turned out the lights, joining you in bed. You both laid on your sides, back facing back. You shut your eyes and try to focus on sleeping, but the image of shirtless, only in boxers James flooded your thoughts.
"Doll?" James voice cut through the silence.
"Y-yes, Buck?"
"Who... Who is Frank  to you?" He asked in a low, dejected tone. Your eyes snap open. What kind of question was that from him?
"What do you mean?" You roll to face him but his back was still towards you.
"Are you and Frank..." He paused, "just ignore it, nevermind."
"Bucky, face me." He didn't  respond. "Please, James." You heard him sigh but he complied, turning to face you. The subtle light from your window made it easier to see his handsome face in the dark. You gulped, trying to muster an ounce of courage to tell him these feelings you've held for him for years.
"Frank and I are strictly friends. Before he became the Punisher he had a wife and two kids who he loved dearly. They-they were killed in front of him. He loved his wife dearly and I don't think he is looking to start dating anytime soon." You sigh and things go silent for a moment.
You rested a hand on his cheek and scooch closer. "James, I... I really enjoy spending time with you. I enjoy your presence. After all that we have been through,  with getting the code words out your head to losing Steve... I want to be by your side no matter what." You felt tears prick your eyes.
"I feel the same way about you doll." James spoke, just above a whisper. "You help ground me and honestly you help keep me sane." His hand found its way above yours that was cupping his cheek. Gently he moved your hand to his lips. He placed a soft kiss to your knuckles before moving it over his heart. "I've felt this for a while and I never had much courage to say it before but... I love you, (Y/N)."
"I love you too, James." You smile, a few happy tears managed to escape your eyes.
"C'mere." He helped move you close to him, pulling you into a deep hug. The chill of his vibranium arm caused goosebumps but the warmth of his other arm gave you comfort.
You wrap your arms around his bare torso and snuggled your face into his neck. God he smelt good. With a little courage coursing through you, you gave him a small kiss on the neck before giving him a little love bite, nothing that would bruise.
Bucky chuckled moving a part from you, just enough to get a full look at your face. Without saying anything he leaned in, his eyes hooded, placing his lips on yours. One of his hands found its way to your head while the other rested on your hip. You pushed your body closer to his, while gently dragging your nails across his back.
"Mm Doll." He mumbled against your lips. "I... I want to continue this with you if that's alright with you."
"Yes, Bucky." And in an instant after giving him the word, he maneuvered you onto your back while he hovered on top of you, his dogtags dangling down. He removed them from his body.
"Don't want those hitting your pretty face." He smiled and leaned in to kiss you once again, this time him slipped his tongue into your mouth, deepening the kiss. His warm hand rested on your neck before he slowly dragged it down your chest and to the hem of your shirt. He messed with it a little, teasing to go underneath.  You whine a bit and arch your back as he kept messing with it.
"May I?" You simply nod in response. He pushed himself away from you and took the hem of your shirt, helping you remove it. The cold air hitting your now exposed chest made you shiver. "No bra? Naughty." He smirked.
"I'm not the one who came out only his his boxers."
"Touché." He tossed your shirt onto the ground and soaked in the view below him. The perfect lighting leaking through the blinds illuminated everything in just the right way. James licked his lips, "You are gorgeous, doll."
"You're pretty handsome yourself." You smile, which made him smile.
"Let me treat you like a goddess. Let me repay the favor." Without another word James attacked your neck with his mouth, nipping and sucking on the area. He continued leaving love marks from your neck down to your chest slowly. The sensation made you moan as tingles went through your body. You felt yourself getting wetter as he continued to leave hickies on your chest.
Bucky used his non-vibranium hand to cup your right breast, kneading it gently. Maintaining eye contact with you his leans his head down to your free breast before giving your raised nipple a quick lick. The feel made your body shake ever so slightly, making him smirk at the reaction. He did it again, although this time slower before latching on, using his tongue to swipe over the sensitive bump.
"Bucky-" You gasped. You felt heat slowly build in your core, not enough to have you screaming, but enough to feel pleasurable. "That feels so good." He continued giving your tender breasts and nipples attention, slowly building you up.
"Lets get these pajama shorts off." He sat up again, moving himself lower on the bed. He gripped the waistband of your shorts and began slowly removing them while you lifted your legs to help. Discarding them like your shirt, he tosses those articles of clothing to the floor. You were left with just your panties
His hands take your knees and help spread your legs farther a part, soaking in the view of your body spread out. His mouth found its place on your in thigh. He left small kissed, sometimes little bites, and he dragged his mouth closer and closer to your wet pussy. "I want to taste you doll, is that alright?"
"Y-yes Bucky, please." You begged, adjusting your hips ever so slightly. "I want to feel you more."
"As you wish." He smirked. Before he removes your panties he places soft kissed over the fabric covering your pussy. You stifle a moan, as he continued to tease you against the fabric. When he was done, he remove your underwear with ease.
"You are stunning, absolutely stunning." His hand found its way to your slit. He gently  brushed his fingers over your sensitive skin, making your body twitch ever so slightly. "You're so wet for me, already." His tongue slowly and softly dragged around your vagina and clit, the teasing is back on.
"A-Ah!" You quietly moaned, trying to keel your voice down. You moan again when you felt one metal finger enter slowly while his mouth latched to your clit. One of your hands reached down to grip his hair as he began to finger and play with your clitoris.
The pleasure had your curling your toes. You had to bite your lip to hold back from moaning loudly. You didn't feel like waking up the others.
Another finger entered as he started to speed up his motions, his tongue and mouth still on your clitoris.
"That feels so good." You said with an airy tone as he continued to work.
"You taste divine." His breath against your sensitive skin made you your thighs clamp around his head. The pleasure was building up and you felt like your were close to cumming.
"J-James, - oh god!" You kept your voice down but the work he is doing to your clit made it hard to stay quiet. "Fuck-"
James give your clit one last lick before sitting, removing his fingers in the process. He then licked his fingers clean as he stared down at your panting body. He could feel his cock wanting to be free from his boxers so he removed them, letting his large erection out. He watched you squirm as you awaited for his touch again.
"Do you want my dick inside you, doll?"
"Ye-yes please." You begged, wiggling your hips for him. "Please!"
"God your so hot." He leaned back over you, placing a sloppy kiss on your mouth. You could taste yourself on his lips. Lining himself up to your entrance he looked to you. "Ready?"
"Yes!" He smiled, and slowly slide his cock inside you. You gasp as you feel him stretch you out, tears stinging your eyes. He stopped once he was fully in, letting you have a moment to get adjusted. "I don't know how I'll keep my voice down."
"Bury your face into my neck, I want to hear you moan my name."
You did what he suggested, you wrapped your arms around his torso while he used his vibranium arm to stay stable and his other arm around your head to keep himself close to you. His body was completely on top of yours.
"You can move now."
James slowly moved his hips away, almost entirely removing his cock from you except the tip before thrusting back in. Your moan was successful smothered by his body. He continued thrust himself inside your pussy, the sound of skin slapping skin filled the room.
"O-Oh James- yesyesyes," You mewl. "You feel so good." You heard him let out a husky groan in your ear.
"I love it when you say my name, (Y/N)." He whispered in your ear as he kept his pace. You continue to moan out his name, gripping him tight as his thrust got faster. "Fuck, your so tight."
"Shit- faster!" You begged and he obliged. "You're so good to me Bucky. You-you're perfect." You could feel his thrust starting to gst sloppy as you felt waves of pleasure course through your body.
"Baby you make me crazy." He moaned. You could feel his hand make its way down to your clit, and your body arches against his as he pressed down on the sensitive bud. He practically started pounding your pussy as he moaned in your ear.
"James I'm gonna- I'm so close!" You cry out as the the feeling kept building.
"Do it, cum for me."
It was like everything in your body started shake as the pressure finally snaps in your core. You bury your face into his chest and moan his name as blinding, white hot pleasure filled your being. Your walls tighten around his cock  and you feel him start to tense.
His thrusts became harder before he finally released his thick cum inside of you before collapse onto of you, panting. Both of you were sweaty and breathing hard, but neither of you moved. The feeling of his cock inside you, twitching, was extremely hot.
"You're amazing, (Y/N)." He grinned, making you smiled.
"You're the best damn thing in my life, James."
---------
You woke up naked the next morning, curled up to an equally naked, sleeping Bucky. You smiled, remembering last nights confession and everything after that. You watch him sleep for a moment before deciding to slip out of bed to make everyone breakfast. You throw on the pajamas you wore before hand and quietly leave the room.
You close the door as quietly as and turned around, only to see Frank sitting at the table reading a magazine you had lying around.
"Oh good morning Frank." You smiled and walked past him, hoping he wouldn't notice anything. "I'm gonna make some breakfast for everyone."
"Morning, (Y/N)." He grunted. "Sleep well?"
You almost choked on air, "Yes, I did. How about you?"
"Oh you know, the couch is alright but I am a light sleeper remember? I kept hearing weird noises through the night. " Your face felt on fire as you turned to face him. He wore a smug smirk on his face. "Got something on your neck there."
You rush to grab your phone and look in the camera. Low and behold, hickies were left on your neck. "Shit."
Frank snorted, "So you finally got with your crush, huh?"
"Oh shut it you grump."
"I'm just teasing you. You know I'm happy for you, (Y/N)."
"Thanks, Frank."
Frank decided to help you with breakfast, taking on making bacon and sausage while you attended to making pancakes. And sure enough the rest of the people in the apartment came out.
"They're gonna see them. "
"I know, I am bracing myself for Sam's teasing." You sigh. You go and place the plate  pancakes you made on the table while Frank placed the bacon and sausage he made.
"G'morning, doll. I missed ya in the morning." Bucky approached you, wrapping his arms around your waist.
"I wanted you to wake up to some breakfast." You grinned and placed a chaste kiss on his lips.
"Did you finally confess your feelings?" You heard Sam. "I gotta get ahold of Tic Tac and Clint they owe- what the hell is on your neck (Y/N), is that what I think it is?" He groaned and sat at the table, everyone taking their spots.
"Hickies are messages on the body that can show ones presence on another-" Zemo spoke but was cut off by Sam.
"I do not want to know, Zemo. Lets just eat."
Breakfast was great. You were surprised Frank got along with the others, though it did take some talking to by Sam to break him out of his shell. You also could have sworn Buck and Frank had a stare down at one point but were both laughing and smiling.
You take hold of Bucks hand that was on the table and give it a light squeeze, smiling at him while he smiled back. Life was pleasant even after these emergency visits.

Loki Laufeyson x Female!Midgardian!Reader: A Bird in the Hand
Tumblr media
Summary: …is surely not worth its asking price.
Rating/Warnings/Tags: All (some foul language; not Thor Ragnarok compliant)
Fic Trade Prompt: “Please, I don’t want to lose you, too.”
A Bird in the Hand
Once upon a time in a realm known as Midgard, there lived a girl. This girl, of course, was you, and you lived as many young women at the time did during that Age of Miracles. None of these miracles ever happened to you. There were no fish oil transformations on your horizon, nor were there any divine calls to adventure. Just like all New Yorkers, you grew use to your daily commute being interrupted by superheroes, to calling insurance companies to argue over their decision to not pay for alien invasion damage to your apartment, and even to carrying an umbrella around with you even on the driest of days in case certain Asgardians decided to visit. Life went on. You had stopped looking for a real miracle years ago.
As well you should have, because there was nothing miraculous about your wedding day. Outside, a seemingly endless mass of dark gray clouds let loose bucket after bucket of rain. Thunder rolled across the sky; lightning flashed–and that, really, was all you could see through the window you had stationed yourself in front of to sulk. If you hadn’t known any better, you’d have blamed the city’s resident thunder god for the disastrous timing of this storm front. As it was, all you could blame was your string of bad luck.
Speaking of bad luck, the door to your parlor snapped open and in stepped the dripping figure of your best friend. Aliyah paused only long enough to adjust her sodden pink hijab before plopping soggily onto an overstuffed loveseat.
“Well, the gazebo is flooded,” she announced, “the food is soaked through, and the caterer won’t bring more to replace it. Your flower arrangements are in pieces, and the band already ran off. I don’t think there’s anything left of your wedding ceremony.”
You did not bother to leave the window, though you did turn just far enough to throw her a sour look. “Do you have any good news to impart?” you asked.
Aliyah grinned. “Your maid of honor hasn’t walked out yet. At least there will be one person here to witness this fiasco.”
“Gonna need a groom for anything to be witnessed.”
Most close friends would offer sympathy when their friend’s fiancé of a year and a half decided to just not show up for the actual wedding. Most acquaintances would feel bad enough when the carefully planned event got rained out. Not your Aliyah. She simply let out a sharp breath and leaned her head back against the couch cushion.
“Can’t say I didn’t warn you,” she said.
You glared at her, which of course she didn’t see, having shut her eyes to listen to the water tumble from the roof to the street outside.
“Thank you. So much,” you said.
“What?” she asked, forcing her eyes open again. “I told you Jared wasn’t good enough for you. Besides, you should keep all the gifts even if he doesn’t stop by. I saw, like, nine blenders in that pile. You’re better off this way, if you ask me.”
“You’re just saying that because you want a free blender,” you said.
“I wouldn’t say no. But, really, you should count your lucky stars. Free stuff and free of your jackass boyfriend. What better start to a weekend?”
“I’d rather be married to my jackass boyfriend.”
Aliyah’s disdain for Jared was nothing new or surprising. He’d fallen from grace in her eyes when he’d got jealous over your fondness for an injured pigeon you’d rescued only a few months after you started dating Jared. Even releasing the bird hadn’t entirely put an end to his complaints about how you spent your free time. On the other hand, you knew one thing that neither Aliyah nor Jared did: Jared’s jealousy wasn’t entirely misplaced.
But that was years ago. This was now. And that bird had always been bad news.
“Are you going to cry about it?” Aliyah asked, peering over at your perch by the parlor’s bay window. “Because, if not, I’d hate to have dragged Habib all the way to America for nothing.”
At the mention of her long-distance boyfriend, you motioned for Aliyah to go on. You preferred to do your moping alone, and Aliyah knew it. She stood and crossed the room to give you a quick hug before she left without another word. Probably you did owe your maid of honor at a least a blender for all the trouble she’d been through on your behalf.
Sighing, you lifted one hand, dug your fingers into your hair, and tore out what was holding it in its elaborate design. Who cared what you looked like now? Even if stupid Jared had shown up, the storm would have ruined your appearance before you made it down the aisle. Now Aliyah had free rein to spend the rest of her afternoon cuddling with Habib, and you had no one else to bother looking pretty for.
Outside your empty room, you could hear the indistinct muttering of your remaining guests. Family, mostly, who had already given up trying to convince you to let them in. What the rest of them were waiting for before they left, you couldn’t guess. Perhaps for you to come out and make an official announcement: The wedding has been called off. Party’s over. You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here. And thanks for all the blenders.
The shame of your situation suddenly threatened to crash down upon you. It would have, if you had remained sitting where you were. Instead, you got up, white dress rustling as you stalked across the room. A quiet shriek of rage was stifled only by your gloved hand pressed to your colored lips. Of all the pathetic, idiotic, insane things you had done in your life! Now you didn’t even have the courage to face your friends and family with the truth.
“Tap. Tap. Tap.”
Hail began to hit the glass behind you, soft and hesitant. Since you had no plans to leave the building any time soon, you ignored this weather development.
Jared hadn’t even called to say he’d changed his mind. You should have known when he hadn’t come home after his stag party the night before. He was probably laughing it up over your stupidity with some blonde bikini babe by the beach that you were supposed to go to for your honeymoon. The thought caused you to kick out angrily at the coffee table, and you heard a quiet rip issue from your skirt in response when it caught on a corner.
You swore.
”Tap. Tap. Tap.”
Now that you thought about it, the sound wasn’t regular enough to be hail. It wasn’t very hesitant anymore either. Still, you ignored the noise as you yanked off your veil, your gloves, and your garter. You were mentally preparing to rip them all to shreds with your fingernails when you heard it again:
“Tap. Tap. Tap.”
That time you did not suppress your shriek. As it faded into the overstuffed furniture surrounding you, you marched over to the window and shoved it open. The wind whistled through the empty space, sending anything in the room not tied down into the air and splattering your face with water. If ever there was a time to reasonably expect an Asgardian thunder god to step inside, it was then. No one was there, though, save for a single bedraggled pigeon.
“Oh, hello,” you said when it hopped onto the sill, and automatically you held out your cupped hands toward it.
The poor thing shivered once, then stepped onto your warm palms. Only when it looked up into your face did you see that it had bright green, very un-pigeon-ish eyes.
Before you could stuff the bird back outside, it lifted itself into the air to half-flutter, half-fly over to the loveseat Aliyah had been sitting on. A flash of light that had nothing to do with the lightning outside filled the room. When you had blinked and cleared your vision enough that you could see again, the pigeon was gone, and in its place reclined a tall, dark-haired, beautiful man, dressed to the nines in Asgardian fashion.
“Hello, darling,” said Loki Laufeyson. “Don’t you look ravishing?”
You were too shocked to contradict him. No mention of your torn dress, mussed hair, or smeared makeup escaped your lips. Instead, you said the only thing you could in that sort of situation: “What are you doing here?”
“Why, I’m here to offer you my congratulations, of course,” he answered, examining one perfectly manicured nail. “Or should it be my condolences?”
“Really?” Your tone dripped with enough sarcasm that it could be heard over the protesting window as you forced it shut. “You disappear for two years, never write, never visit, and then you just happen to pop by to celebrate my wedding to another man?”
“What kind of secret lover would I be if I did not?”
“We are not secret lovers.”
“Well, no, we haven’t been for quite some time. I see no reason why that should stop us from picking up right where we left off, however.”
“We were never secret lovers.”
“Really?” he said, mocking the tone of your earlier question. “That’s not what it seemed like to me. Of course, I had the brain of a pigeon most of the time, but at night when your beau had to work and leave you so very alone–”
“You can’t just show up out of the blue and expect me to want you again,” you interrupted. “And on my wedding day to boot.”
To his credit, Loki looked genuinely confused by your behavior–like he’d expected you to jump straight into his arms, marriage or no. Obviously, they did things differently in Asgard. You were not Asgardian.
“Fine,” he said. “If that’s the way you want it. I was only trying to thank you for helping me, you know.”
“All I did was take in a pigeon that got injured when Thor threw a bunch of peanuts at a flock. It didn’t really deserve that sort of thanking.”
“Ah, but you enjoyed it anyway.” That wasn’t the point. He knew it wasn’t the point just as well as you did, because once he made it, he got fluidly up to his feet to and walked over to stand in front of you. “If you are that disinclined to see me, I suppose I had better get going. If you ever grow tired of being lonely again–oh, that’s right. You don’t know how to contact me.”
You opened your mouth to remind Loki that you didn’t want to contact him, but then something about Loki’s words rang strange.
“Alone?” you echoed.
“Yes, alone. Or do you expect your Prince Charming to come riding up on a horse of white any second now? Better late than never?”
Without thinking, without warning, you slapped him straight across the face.
“Ow!” he snapped, pressing one of his hands to the mark on his face. “What was that for?”
“What did you do?” You lifted your hand for another blow. “What did you do to Jared?”
“Me? Do something to Jared? What should I have to do with that ponderous ass?”
“Did you kill him, Loki?” you asked, voice quavering. Loki could do it. Easily. He was a god, and Jared just…well, just a ponderous ass.
Loki let out a single bark of laughter. “Oh, please. I just got out of Asgardian prison. As if I’d risk going back over the murder of a petty moral such as he.”
That brought you up short. Frowning, you deigned to look at him again. “Prison?”
“Yes, prison. Did you think my absence was due to taking a pleasure cruise?”
“I thought you’d escaped prison when I found you the first time.”
“But you sent me back to Asgard when I started causing trouble,“ he reminded you. "Odin does not forget his son’s crimes easily, nor is he inclined to forgive them. Luckily my brother is far easier to manipulate.”
He had not, you noticed, made any real move to leave. Loki still stood in front of you, looking down as the pink handprint faded from his cheek.
“So…you didn’t kill my fiancé?” you asked uncertainly.
He shook his head. “If he isn’t here, it is because he is a dunce, not because I tricked him in any way.”
“Oh.” All the problems of your appearance seemed at once apparent and embarrassing. To think that this man would see you in such a state, and only because he’d wanted to see you after his release from jail. “Why did you really come, then? Since you knew he wasn’t here. To gloat?”
“The thought did occur to me,” Loki confessed. “I am not often in the position of being the more desirable choice. But,” here his voice turned oddly sincere, “I actually came to ask you to come with me.”
Your mouth fell open. Some of Loki’s usual acerbic amusement returned as he watched you flounder; you could see the faint outlines of his familiar smirk at the corners of his mouth. Finally, you managed a short, “go with you where?”
He shrugged, and started to twist the curtain in between his long, pale fingers. “I don’t know, really.”
“You want me to go somewhere with you without anywhere in mind?”
“I thought we’d figure it out as we went along,” he said. “Travel the galaxies. I cannot return to Asgard and Midgard, of course, is out of the question so long as I do not rule it.”
“You want me to follow you into outerspace?”
Only his silence could tip you off that Loki was actually nervous. He clearly had no idea how you would respond to his suggestion–which was by falling into a nearby chair to gape at him.
“You want me to leave my family?” you asked.
“They live far away and hardly talk to you.”
“And my job?”
“That you’ve never liked. We’re both aware.”
“And my best friend?”
“She spends most of her time visiting mosques in India with her boyfriend,” Loki said with a dismissive flick of his hand. “Besides, there’s no rule to say we can’t come back to visit her every so often. I have no objection. She seems a sensible enough woman.”
“And you want me to leave them all,” you went on as though you couldn’t hear him, “for you, a man I haven’t seen in years because he was in prison.”
Once more, Loki said nothing. His green eyes peered into yours with unreadable depths, just as they had the unfortunate day you had returned home after to work to find your injured pigeon friend gone and a strange man eating all of the meat out of your fridge in its place. You could remember, too, the feel of that man’s skin against yours, the heat of his lips on your neck, the sound of his low voice in your ear–and Jared complaining, always complaining, about how much time you spent with that damn bird.
You buried your face in your hands. “I can’t do it, Loki. I can’t.”
You waited to hear him leave again, to hear the glass move and the rush of the storm and the flutter of wings. None came. All that did was one soft word:
“Please.”
“Huh?”
When you looked up, Loki was right above you. His hands gripped the chair arms at your sides with enough force to make them whiter than ever–but his eyes were not on yours anymore.
“Please,” he said, “I don’t want to lose you, too.”
Another move without thinking or warning: You gently touched his other cheek.
Loki’s eyes closed for a half second before he moved one hand to hold your wrist there. “I have already lost my father, my mother, my home. My own brother has thrust me unceremoniously from both realms I sought to rule. And then to hear that I would lose you, too, to an oaf like that Jared.”
No one could say that Loki losing all of this wasn’t entirely his fault. He had decided to lead an alien invasion into Earth, to try murdering several members of his mentioned family, and to seduce young Earth women under the guise of hurt animals. But part of Loki’s charm was that he never failed to make one doubt that he could be better, maybe, if you only let him try.
“I’m sorry,” you said sincerely. A sincere apology didn’t mean your mind was changed, however, and this, also, Loki knew.
“Do you want me to beg?” he asked. “I am no longer a stranger to begging.”
With that, Loki slid to the wooden floor before you. Stranger or no, it was positive it wasn’t a position he relished being in, what with how stiff his hands were around yours when he made to hold them. He swallowed, took a deep breath, and began:
“I know I am asking a lot. But I, too, have lost a family, a job, and my closest friends. I would not ask you to come with me if I did not intend on paying you pack ten times in kind. If you will allow me to take you with me, I know I can make you happier than you would be here. Together we will find some place to call our own, and you shall be my queen. So please,” he said, “please let me keep one last thing that I love. Don’t make me leave you behind, too.”
It wasn’t the prettiest speech you had ever heard come out of his mouth, but it was probably the most honest. You gave him a tiny smile as you squeezed his hands in return. “A queen, huh?”
Loki smirked. “Or a comfortable, quiet living, depending on what we find, and how thorough Thor is in seeking me out. At least we could be comfortable and quiet for a little while.”
“Can’t imagine that’s going to last long with you around.”
“With you around to look after me, though…”
That got you to laugh. “Oh, yes, I’m sure I’d do a wonderful job making sure you didn’t get into any trouble. I did such a good job before.”
Some of the color returned to Loki’s features. He was starting to hope. Against your better judgement, so were you. A couple of things, however, remained to bother you:
“What if you came here and Jared and I were married?” you asked.
“Then I would have had to resort to kidnapping.”
“And how did you even know I was getting married today to begin with?”
He smiled his Cheshire smile, and that was when you knew you were truly lost. “You really ought to stop talking to the birds on your fire escape. You never know which one would be willing to pass information off in exchange for a couple of peanuts.”
“Oh, and you stalk me. What part of this deal doesn’t sound good?”
“None of it, I should hope.” Standing, Loki kept one hand firmly around one of yours. “We should go, you realize. Unless you want to say your goodbyes?”
You thought of your parents blustering about how you dared to invite both of them to your wedding. You thought of the forlorn apartment you shared with a man that had never really loved you for you. You thought of Aliyah and her instance that Jared would never be good enough for you. You thought of the awkward explanation that would be expected as soon you set foot outside that door–and you grinned.
“Not a chance.”
“Then I believe,” he said, and abruptly pulled you into his arms in an obvious parody of carrying a bride before pushing the window open with his boot, “we have a few errands to go on before we get on our way.”
“Like what?”
“Unless you plan to live the rest of our lives with nothing but multiple blenders,” he began, but was not able to finish over your sudden laughter and the return of the torrent outside.
You latched your hands behind his neck as he dove back into the rain. There were stars somewhere above those clouds, and you would be visiting them soon enough–them and endless other realms. Maybe eloping with a man that could turn into a pigeon wasn’t the best miracle there ever was on Midgard, but it pulled off the most important trick of them all: Against all odds, you lived happily ever after.

I feel like one of the reasons why Sam and Bucky work with each other so well as a duo in is the fact that they are at the same (or almost the same) level of importance when it comes to the MCU. They are in a similar position as characters.
Let me explain...
----- ------- -----
Before tfatws Sam Wilson was a character from the background. He is important for the overall storyline, but he’s not at the front of any movie. Even in ca:tws he was less relevant to the plot than e.g. Natasha. He’s necessary and there is a significant reason he’s there at all, but at the end of the day it’s a Steve Rogers’ movie. Not Sam’s. And even if calling Sam a sidekick is most of the time insulting - at least within the MCU - he kind of is a sidekick. That’s the role he has in the narrative. There’s a main hero (Steve) and a guy who follows his lead to help (Sam). Of course Sam has his own life and issues that have nothing to do with Steve, but we don’t even know them at this point. And here we’re looking at Sam through the lense of the Captain America movies.
Almost every scene with Sam before tfatws was connected to Steve. Sam joined the fight in ca:tws to help Steve. He was in AoU, because Steve invited him to Stark’s party. He was in Civil War, because Steve asked him to join the Avengers and he wanted to help Steve with finding Bucky... Similarly, Sam had his own opinions in Civil War, but we only hear them when it’s relevant to Steve’s story. (When Sam and Rhodey argue about the Accords they stand behind Steve, because the scene is about him making the decision.)  Even in Ant-Man, where there is no Steve at all, Sam mentions him after Scott left. Etc, etc. You get the picture.
And the same goes for Bucky.
We only see him in ca:tfa where his story is intertwined with Steve’s. When Steve gets his ass kicked before he got the serum. Or when they go to the Expo. Or when they fight during the war. Even when Bucky is saved by Steve it’s less about him being finally free and more about Steve finding his friend again. In ca:tws their meeting is told mostly from Steve’s perspective. It’s a film about Steve facing the Winter Soldier not the other way round. And later viewers don’t see Bucky’s life as a fugative untill the moment he becomes important to Steve’s storyline again in Civil War. And so on and so forth. It goes like that basically from Bucky’s first appearance in the MCU to the last scenes of Endgame.
When Steve and Bucky are fighting on the same side Bucky’s role could also be described as: “a sidekick”. Just like Sam’s.
----- ------- -----
And I honestly believe that this is the reason why pairing Sam and Bucky together makes so much sense. Even if you put aside the obvious chemistry between the characters and their actors it just works for them to join forces in multiple scenes.
Both of them walked in Steve’s shadow before they got their own show. Not because they’re less interesting as characters or because Steve’s storyline is better, but because Steve is one of the main heroes in the entire MCU while Sam and Bucky were always orbiting around him in a way. And we, as the viewers, learnt very little about them outside of the stuff that was important for their relationships with Cap.
Why do we know about Sam losing Riley? Because Steve also lost someone who fell to their death. Why do we see Bucky killing Stark’s parents? Because it’s a movie about Steve’s conflict with Tony (mostly) and it’s just one of many things that makes the conflict worse. I’m not implying it’s unfair to the characters or something (even though I’d love to see them having more sceentime in general)... It’s just the role they serve in a story, because someone has to be in that position for the narrative to flow. You cannot make every character “the main one”. That wouldn’t really work.
----- ------- -----
But then... When Sam and Bucky are together we suddenly see much more about both of them outside of their connection with Steve. It’s almost like destiny how they always end up in close proximity. They seem to naturally gravitate towards each other ever since they’ve met. And it looks like taking them away from a big, important character (Steve) makes them shine brighter. Most of the little moments they shared became iconic at some point when they were just allowed to exist together.
And again... I’m not saying that I don’t enjoy seeing their interactions with Steve, because I do. Especially Sam’s. But it very often feels like they interact with each other because it’s important for the progression of the plot. When Steve talks with Sam it’s often about their next mission, or how Sam helps him with something, or to show that Steve has difficulties with adjusting to the modern world. And when Steve talks with Bucky (at least after ca:tfa) I always feel like there should be a narrator’s voice talking over a scene, telling me: “see? they were friends in the past, before the war... this is important! pay attention”.
Meanwhile, when Sam and Bucky interact, some scenes just... happen for no purpose. Like they interact, because they want to, not because the script told them to. There’s absolutely no plot-related reason for showing Sam and Bucky sitting in that tiny car in Germany. Or for showing them standing together in Infinity War when Thanos attacks.
What the two of them have is completely different from what they had with Steve in the past.
----- ------- -----
To be honest, it always bothered me a little how Steve never really did anything for Sam (freeing him from prison where Sam landed for helping Steve doesn’t count). It’s always Sam making Steve feel better and standing by his side. So it’s a very glaring contrast, when we got to see a whole separate montage where Bucky visits Sam and helps him fix the boat that was important to his family. Or when he casually throws a shield with him for practice, asks Sam if he’s okay, and brings him a new super-hero suit even though Sam never even asked for these favours or suggested that he needs Bucky’s help.
And I know that some people won’t like what I’m about to say, but Steve and Bucky really don’t act like they are particularly close to each other most of the time (especially after their first movie). I believe that they were friends before everything went to shit, but after ca:tws? Not really. They cling to that label, because of their shared story and because Steve cannot let go of the past, but they just... don’t act like they are friends anymore. It’s like they both changed too much and don’t know how to deal with that. So they don’t. It’s like Steve is only attached to some past version of Bucky that no longer exists and the new Bucky doesn’t fully match his expectations. Sam on the other hand has no expectations at all. He builds his relationship with Bucky from the fresh foundations. The creators don’t need to bring back some shared memories from 70 years ago to prove that these two have a strong connection. They just show them doing stuff together. The argument about The Big Three? Petty revange over a car seat? Discussing music tastes? Having “sleepovers” and giving each other slightly mean, but harmless nicknames? Discussing mental health? Having staring contests? Watching goddamn sunsets? That’s what people who are close to each other do.
And that’s why these two simply... work.
It’s not just implied or explained in a flashback. “Look, viewer. They are friends. I know they don’t act like they are, but trust me. They went for a dinner a decade ago... offscreen.” Sam and Bucky even refused to call themselves friends! They’re a couple of guys (allegedly). And yet I still know they like each other very much from the way they interact, speak about each other, or look at each other.
And I really think that one of the main reason’s why it works like that is because they’re both equally crucial (or irrelevant at times) for the story. Both are just as (un)necessary for the plot to move on. Sometimes they are very important and sometimes the plot would easily work without them. ca:tws could’ve happen without Sam. Civil War could’ve technically happen without Bucky if they put more emphasis on the Accords. There were both certainly unnecessary in Infinity War or Endgame. But there’s no way the events in tfatws would’ve happen without both of them being there together. Sam might’ve never taken the shield and become Captain America if it wasn’t for Bucky. Bucky would’ve spent countless years trying and failing to make amends and never finding peace if it wasn’t for Sam. The fandom likes to focus on only Bucky, but you wouldn’t get this much content about him if there was no Sam to share the story with him.
Because they just fit together perfectly.
----- ------- -----
Last disclaimer (because I really don’t want people to get the wrong impression): I actually like Steve. And I like Samsteve (romantically or platonically). Platonic Stevebucky is alright too. But it just kind of... pales in comparison when you see what Sam and Bucky have. Most MCU relationships pale in comparison if I’m being honest.

part 02/?? "the same fucked up past"
master list
previous part // next part
word count 5.3k
Okay so… Maybe you went a little too hard last night. This headache that you’ve been fighting the last thirty minutes was killer, and the sunlight that peeked past your curtains and into your eyes was not helping. You were so out of it, you swore you could smell bacon. Which could never be the case, it was just you here - and that’s what made your eyes open. You were suddenly hit with the memories of the previous day, and you sat yourself up to stare at the door.
No yeah that was totally bacon you were smelling. You rubbed your hands over your face and flung the blankets off your body, not even wanting to know how you got in here last night. You stripped out of your day old clothing and jumped into some jeans and a random shirt before preparing yourself for what you were about to walk out to.
You pulled your door open to find your living room tidy and put together, and in the kitchen your eyes landed on the backs of Sam and Bucky. They were hovering over your stove and talking amongst themselves, but as you came closer you could make it out more as arguing. You were more focused on the full pot of coffee begging to be drunk (by you specifically).
“Just let me make them sunny side up!” Sam told Bucky as you came up behind them.
“I’m telling you, you gotta have a little bit of crunchiness around the edges,” Bucky argued back. “That’s the best part.”
“I hate to say it but he isn’t wrong,” you said as you opened a cabinet to grab a mug. The two men glanced at you just as you began pouring yourself a hefty cup.
“See?” Bucky said to Sam who all but huffed.
“Thanks for having my back,” Sam mumbled your way and you hummed as you passed him to grab a seat on a stool.
“What is all this anyway?” You asked as Bucky plated a couple eggs and a piece of toast. He turned around and placed it in front of you and held your gaze for a moment before turning back around to repeat the process. You raised a brow at the two men, then grabbed the fork and cut into the eggs. “Thought you two would be gone by now.”
You missed the shared glance between them, you were too busy shoving some food into your mouth. But as you chewed and looked back up at them they faced you together, and you knew that look on their faces, and started shaking your head. “No-”
“Come on, (Y/N),” Sam tried to reason again. “We’ve got at least eight super soldiers out there. We need all the help we can get.”
“Can’t you track down Strange or someone who, ya know, wants to help?” You asked and took a sip from your cup. “Besides, I have very important things here.”
“Is that right?” Sam asked and you gave him a small mhm before going back to your plate. Just as you were about to dig into the other egg the plate was pulled away from you, and you raised your gaze up to meet Bucky’s stare.
“You’re bullshitting,” Bucky stated. You narrowed your gaze at him.
“You’re annoying,” you challenged. Bucky huffed and leaned forward towards you, and you shifted back in your seat.
“You owe me a favor,” Bucky told you. You shook your head at him and sighed.
“You’re really bringing that up?”
“Yeah I’m bringing that up,” Bucky countered. You held his gaze for a few more moments, while Sam watched the exchange from behind. You finally blinked at Bucky and rolled your eyes.
“Fine, but give me the plate back,” you asked and after a few seconds Bucky slid the plate back to you and you grabbed it and went back to cutting into your eggs. You were almost completely sure you were going to end up regretting this decision, and for still owing Bucky this favor.
It’s been awhile since you’ve had to pack for a mission, you really didn’t even know where to start. Sam had filled you in on everything they knew so far. Eight confirmed, though there could be more for all they knew. They had followed up on a lead before coming your way but it wasn’t something he wanted to talk about. And he also filled you in one this new Captain America.
“So.. You’re officially out of leads?” You asked and Sam nodded while you shoved some clothes into a bag. “What about Walker? Think they have any information?”
“Even if they did, we are not teaming up with those two,” Bucky interjected as he came into your room. You could tell he was antsy, ready to get a move on. You ignored him though and zipped your bag closed. “Besides, Walker doesn’t have any leads.”
You could see Sam’s face scrunch up a bit as he stood to level with Bucky, and you raised a brow at the two. Was this going to be an everyday thing?
“I know where you’re going with this, and the answer is no,” Sam told him and Bucky shifted and leaned closer and lowered his voice.
“He knows all of HYDRA’s secrets. Don’t you remember Siberia?” Bucky asked and you fought back the urge to twitch at the mention.
“Okay Tweedledee and Tweedledumb,” you cut them off and they looked your way. “Anyone wanna fill me in on who you’re talking about because I know you’re not talking about the man who used my parent’s death as a revenge tactic-“
Bucky’s face fell into a straight frown and Sam looked at him like he was ashamed as well. You sighed and shook your head. “No, of course you would suggest that.”
“I’m just playing devil’s advocate here-“ Bucky started and you scoffed.
“Doing more than just playing,” you mumbled and Bucky huffed.
“But he’s the only lead we have right now.” Bucky finished. The two looked at you as if waiting for permission and you closed your eyes and let out a deep sigh. You were already regretting your decision.
“Fine. Let’s go see Zemo.”
Tumblr media
You didn’t like this one bit. Bucky had gone to see Zemo a few hours ago, and here he was trying to talk Sam into breaking him out. Thankfully, Sam was more sound minded then Barnes was. They argued back and forth (this really was going to be a daily occurrence) while you sat on a bench in whatever creepy dark warehouse you were in. You snacked on a packet of fruit snacks you hid in your pocket from home, and watched the two men bicker amongst themselves.
At this point you were just along for the ride.
“Have you lost your mind?” Sam asked and you held back a laugh. You wanted to answer that on a dime and cleared your throat quietly. But the glare Bucky sent your way let you know he heard you. Good.
“We have no leads, no moves, nothing,” Bucky tried to reason and you watched him shift his balance and look your way. “At least I’m trying to help.”
“By breaking out one of the most dangerous men in the world? Who single handedly broke up the Avengers? Yeah, so helpful,” you said and shoved your trash back into your pocket before standing to join them.
“We have eight super soldiers that are on the loose, in case you two forgot,” Bucky said and you crossed your arms.
“We haven’t forgotten, but Zemo is gonna mess with our minds, especially yours,” Sam pointed out to him. “No offense.”
“Offense taken,” Bucky said in a low tone. “Super soldiers go against everything he believes in. He’s crazy, but he has a code.”
“Well at least you two have one thing in common,” you said below your breath, but the look Bucky gave you let you know he heard you, again. “Let’s not forget he blew up the UN and killed King T’Chaka in the process, and framed you for it. Oh yeah, and used my parents death as a revenge tactic, and showed the footage to my brother and I. Didn’t think you forgot that by now, or what about the Wakandans? They definitely haven’t forgotten.”
“Look, we get why this matters to you,” Sam cut in, almost taking a step in front of you to block you off from Bucky’s view. “But it’s pushing you off the deep end.”
“We don’t know how they’re getting the serum, or how many of them there even are, Sam.” Bucky tried to reason, and you scoffed.
“Aww, can’t handle a couple tough guys, Terminator?” You asked and Bucky huffed.
“Will you two stop with the nicknames already? I don’t understand most of them anyway,” Bucky said and you shrugged.
“That’s what’s fun about it,” you suggested and Bucky rolled his eyes.
“Just hear me out, okay?” He asked. You stood there and listened to an elaborate plot of breaking Zemo out of his containment, and you couldn’t help but wonder what you were dragged into.
“I don’t like how casual you’re being about this,” Sam said and you nodded in agreement.
“It’s unnatural,” you agreed and Sam nodded with you and Bucky’s face fell.
“Is this how it’s going to be? You two teaming up on me?” Bucky asked and you shrugged.
“Probably,” Sam and you said at once. Before anyone could get another word out the doors to the warehouse were pushed open, and everyone turned to see a man’s back, who was closing the doors. When he turned around and took off his cap, your stomach folded. You looked at Bucky once more with a glare.
What an idiot.
“Whoa, woah, whoa,” Sam began to say and take a couple steps back.
“No, come on, listen-“ Bucky tried to reason. Sam looked back at Zemo and pointed at him.
“What are you doing here?” Sam asked and Zemo just shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly.
“I didn’t tell you because I knew you wouldn’t let this happen,” Bucky said and you shook your head and looked at Zemo.
“For good reason,” you said.
“What did you do, Bucky,” Sam asked and Bucky motioned back at Zemo.
“We need him,” Bucky stated and Sam came back to your side.
“You’re going back to prison!” Sam said to Zemo, who lifted his hands in peace.
“If I may-“ Zemo started to say.
“NO,” the three of you said in warning, and Zemo dropped his hands and listened to the bickering.
“When Steve refused to sign the Accords, you backed him. You broke the law, and stuck your neck out for me. All I’m asking is for you to do it again,” Bucky said to Sam before looking your way. “And you owe me, so you have no say in the matter.”
“Thanks for the reminder, Tinman,” you threw back at him. Bucky rolled his eyes and looked back at Sam, waiting for his blessing. Sam looked annoyed but finally sighed and looked at Zemo.
“If we do this, you don’t make a move without our permission,” Sam ordered and Zemo nodded.
“Fair,” Zemo agreed. You shared a glance with Bucky and shook your head at him.
“Okay Zemo. Where do we start?” You asked.
Tumblr media
You couldn’t believe you were onboard a private jet, headed to an unknown destination, with the three biggest idiots you’ve ever met (well okay.. maybe second to a certain super soldier you did not want to talk about). You settled into your seat across from Zemo (please could someone end your misery) and looked out the window to the passing clouds, before a fuzzy feeling settled into your throat. You slid the blind close over the window just as Oeznik was offering you a drink, but before you could accept, Bucky took the drink from him.
“She won’t be drinking,” He told the older man, and you gaped at him.
“Says who?” You asked and Bucky handed the drink to Sam and sat opposite of him.
“Says me, as part of the favor you owed me,” Bucky replied, and started to search his pockets from something.
“My presence is the only favor you’re getting out of me,” you argued back at him, but he ignored you. You huffed and crossed your arms and watched Zemo pull out a small notebook, and your heart dropped.
That was Steve’s. And it seemed right as you noticed, the idiot beside you did too.
“Who is Nakajima?” Zemo asked. Bucky was up in a split second, snatching the book back and getting in the criminal’s face.
“If you touch that again, I’ll kill you,” Bucky threatened before moving back to sit in his seat across the aisle. Sam watched the exchange before meeting your gaze, and you shrugged. You had no answers for that.
“I’m sorry,” Zemo offered. “I understand that list of names. People you’ve wronged as the Winter Soldier.”
“Don’t push your luck,” Bucky warned and you looked across at Zemo. He offered you a smile and you shook your head.
“I don’t like you,” you told the Sokovian man. Zemo nodded and took a sip of his drink.
“Understandable. I’m sorry that you got caught in the crossfire,” Zemo offered and you blinked at him. “But it was necessary to share the truth.”
“By showing us a video of our parents being killed?” You asked a little too loudly. You had sat forward in your seat, and narrowed your eyes. “You’re the HYDRA expert. Tell me then, how do you think that affected me, hm? You think when I close my eyes at night that I don’t see that replaying in my head? You triggered that memory. You knew what you were doing.”
You stood from your seat abruptly and Zemo (probably everyone, but who cares) watched as you went to the back of the plane, and you locked yourself in the bathroom. You didn’t come out for most of the trip until there was a knock, and Sam’s voice spoke through the door.
“We’re landing soon, and we need you out here,” Sam said. You took a deep steady breath and unlocked the door and pushed it open, and it folded open to reveal Sam. “Are you okay?”
“I don’t want to talk about it,” you told him honestly. Though he looked like he didn’t want to give the topic up, he nodded and motioned back to the front of the small plane.
When Sam and you regrouped, you watched Zemo picking through some outfits (where did he even get these?) before handing Sam one. It was an odd red and yellow suit, and Sam took it but raised a brow.
“What the hell is this?” Sam asked. Bucky was just zipping up a leather jacket that had his vibration arm exposed and you avoided his looks.
“That is your cover,” Zemo offered without, and seemingly picked another fit for himself. “We cannot simply walk in as ourselves.”
“All of us,” Bucky chimed in, and you knew he was directing that to you. You rolled your eyes and finally looked his way and crossed your arms.
“Just tell me the plan,” you said and Zemo looked to Oeznik, who disappeared around the small corner for something. Sam disappeared back to the bathroom, probably to change.
“Sam will become Conrad Mack, aka the Smiling Tiger. One of Selby’s usual patrons, while I remain as myself. James here, will enter as the Winter Soldier, and I’ll be offering his services to get us in with Selby.”
“Are you sure this is a good plan?” You turned and asked Bucky. Bucky was fastening a glove over his flesh hand and looked up for a moment at the wall. “Isn’t this what you’ve been working away from?”
“We need the information,” Bucky said coldly. You blinked at him as he avoided your gaze, and you looked back to Zemo.
“So what am I doing?” You asked. Oeznik came back around the corner with a black dress and you tilted your head.
“You are accompanying me for the evening,” Zemo said and you eyed the dress.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” you said as you eyed the silky dress. Bucky seemed to be paying just as much attention to the pick. For some reason, this changed his tune on letting you tag along.
“No, it’s too dangerous,” Bucky said and you gaped at him.
“Oh I can’t go but you can, and then go all Winter Soldier? That’s not how this works, Barnes,” you challenged and he faced you fully and got in your face.
“I’m saying that you need to stay put,” Bucky said. His low voice was almost a growl, and if you hadn’t been used to being outsized by a super soldier in the past, maybe this would’ve intimidated you. You looked him over and held his gaze as you leaned past him and snatched the dress from Zemo’s grip.
“Try and stop me,” you challenged. You turned around towards the bathroom, and just as Sam exited, you entered and relooked the door.
That was so… Weird. Right? You looked yourself over in the mirror and then looked at the dress in your hand. It was smooth to the touch, probably the same material of the dress you wore to that party Ultron crashed. You smiled a bit to yourself at the memory of that night, besides a murdery robot, you had met and got along with everyone well that night. Sam, Wanda, Thor… Natasha… Tony… Steve.
You cringed and shook your head. Pushing down the memories of that night, of those people really, you stripped from your comfortable clothes and into the satin black dress. When you could finally adjust it right, you smoothed the thin straps over your shoulders and looked yourself over in the mirror. The black form fitted dress stopped high on your thighs, and there was a cut out on the side that offered a little wiggle room for walking. You fixed your hair, touched up on whatever makeup you had on, and with a final glance you had to admit.. Zemo had taste, at least. You threw open the door and stepped out, only to hear the three of them fighting. Again.
“You didn’t tell me that part of the plan,” you could overhear Bucky saying.
“Buck, does it really matter?” Sam asked and Zemo nodded, in a fur collar lined coat. All together everyone looked… Okay, but separated it was a tad off. You blamed Bucky of course, if he hadn’t broken Zemo out this wouldn’t be happening.
“As far as I know, she can handle herself,” Zemo said and he straightened his clothing.
“He’s right,” Sam agreed and you finally decided to butt into the conversation.
“She can handle herself,” you chimed in, and they turned to look at you. If you were checked out, you didn’t notice. You had snatched the heels that were laying out for you, and with one hand you gripped onto Sam’s shoulder, and with the other you began to put the shoes on. “Besides, someone needs to keep you all in check.”
“We’d be fine without you,” Bucky tried to reason, just as you set both strapped feet back on the ground and met his gaze.
“First you want my help, then you don’t.. Starting to think I should just head back to the Netherlands,” you commented and Sam shook his head.
“No, ignore him. We need you,” Sam reassured you and you nodded in acceptance. At least someone wanted you around.
A light came on to indicate a descent from the sky, and everyone took their original seats. You ignored Barnes’ looks, and stayed mostly silent as the plane landed, and even as everyone walked side by side one another. To your right was Bucky, Zemo, then Sam at the end. You tilted your head to the side and felt a small crackle, and sighed at the released tension. Somehow, Bucky took it as an invitation to talk.
“Why are you so hard headed?” He asked quietly, as if to shield the conversation from the other two who were discussing Sam’s cover. “You couldn’t have just stayed on the plane?”
“I’m sorry, weren’t you the one who came to me for help?” You shot back at him and he rolled his eyes at you. You shook your head and looked back straight ahead. “But no, as soon as it became clear I’m Zemo’s arm candy, you changed your mind. Kinda misogynistic if you ask me.”
“I’m not trying to be misogynistic,” Bucky replied and sighed deeply. “I just thought you… Didn’t want to be reminded of doing this type of mission.”
You understood pretty quickly what he was implying, and honestly it made you even more mad. “You really want to talk to me about this, when you’re planning on engaging as the Winter Soldier?”
And with that… Bucky grumbled to himself and moved on from the subject. In the distance motorcycle lights began to form, as well as the headlights of a car, and everyone came to a stop in the middle of a road.
“No matter what happens, we have to stay in character. Our lives depend on it, there’s no margin for error,” Zemo instructed and you nodded a bit to yourself. This should be simple enough.
The ride in was ominous, the car silent as an unknown man drove the group to its destination. You were sandwiched in between Sam and Bucky, and you did your best not to meet the gaze of the man in the rearview mirror. This is fine, everything was going to be fine. The car came to a stop in the city, and everyone began to get out, and Zemo offered you his hand. Without hesitation, you took his guidance and he helped you out, and you walked by his side as the group made their way deeper into Madripoor.
God, it smelled bad.
There were guns and crimes galore, and you kept your eyes focused on Zemo’s head in front of you, Sam and Bucky trailing behind you. Zemo entered an alleyway that soon was filled with a bunch of people, and suddenly your hands were sweaty. Zemo came up along a bar and the man behind it turned around and looked everyone over.
“Hello gentleman,” he greeted and looked at Sam pointedly as you grzed Zemo’s side. “Wasn’t expecting you, Smiling Tiger.”
“His plans changed,” Zemo explained and rested his arms on the bartop. “We have business to do with Selby.”
The bartender looked at Sam again with an odd look on his face before giving him a short nod. “The usual?”
You watched as the bartender turned around and moved to a jar, and pulled out a snake. You had to fight back a grin, sliding one of your hands up Zemo’s arm, while the other grazed over your lips to hide the smile that so badly wanted to form. You met Bucky’s glance for only a second, whose pointed stare just screamed Winter Soldier mode. Either way, he didn’t look amused.
Zemo had a simple drink, while Sam was handed one with something from inside the snake floating at the bottom of the shot. The two men clicked their glasses together, and eventually Sam joined Zemo in downing his shot. The Bartender still looked unsatisfied, but moved on from the group. You were about to remove yourself from Zemo’s side when an unknown man came up behind you, sandwiched between you and Bucky, and looked at Zemo pointeedly.
“I got word from up high. You ain’t welcome here,” he informed your “partner”. You glanced at Bucky, then to Zemo who seemed completely unfazed.
“I have no business with the Power Broker, but if he insists, he can either come and talk to me, or…” Zemo motioned to Bucky by your side. You unlatched your hand from Zemo’s arm and held Bucky’s gaze. Deep down, you didn’t want him to do this.
“Or bring Selby for a chat,” Zemo offered. The man looked at everyone and disappeared, and you inwardly sighed.
“What’s a power broker?” You asked quietly and Zemo shook his head.
“Every kingdom needs its king, let’s just pray we stay under his radar,” Zemo said and you nodded a bit and looked over at Sam.
“Enjoy the drink, Smiling Tiger?” You asked and wiggled a brow at him. Sam was about to respond, he probably had a good comeback, when Zemo looked at Bucky with a more serious look.
“Зимний солдат,” (Winter Soldier) Zemo said in perfect Russian. “Атака.”
Just as a hand fell on Zemo’s shoulder beside you, Bucky was quick to move around you and grab the man’s arm, and step into action. He pulled the man from the group and with a glance at everyone, he engaged. You watched as he practically laid the man out in full force, before another charged at him. With another hit and kick, that one went flying into a third attacker. You couldn’t help but take a small step forward with the rest of the crowd, as Bucky just… Demolished anything that came at him. Another man was flung forward and Bucky reacted perfectly on time, and before you knew it he had a man sprawled out on the bar top right in front of you.
The audible sound of guns readying made everyone freeze as Zemo carried on his Russian to Bucky, keeping the act up. But your eyes didn’t leave the back of Bucky’s head. He dropped the man from the bar and slowly turned around and finally met your look. You wanted to say something, you’re not a total asshole, but you couldn’t. Not even when you felt someone’s hand move some hair from off your shoulder and expose your skin from behind. You sucked a deep breath in, but the man’s touch wasn’t on your long. Bucky’s vibranium hand was quick to snatch the perp’s hand from your neckline, and you could hear the crack and Bucky bent (probably broke) his wrist and sent him flying back.
You missed where the bartender said Selby would see everyone, you were too entranced on Bucky’s gaze. But Zemo was quick to redirect your attention, and off everyone went to meet his contact. You… You just couldn’t believe how easily Bucky fell back into that, and didn’t want to think about the fact you fell back easily into your past too.

So things did not go as planned, as many of the missions you go on unfold. Lucky for everyone, an unexpected old friend came to the rescue. Everyone else seemed okay with it, but what were the odds Sharon Carter was in Madripoor? Either way, you were glad to get out of these clothes, and Sharon was nice enough to lend not only a shower, but something normal to wear. Really it was a sweater like material shirt and some dressy pants to go with it, but it beat the dress and heels.
You had zoned out of the conversation occurring around you as everyone settled in. You let out a content sigh, maybe you could actually get some rest tonight-
“Look, you know the whole hero thing is a joke, right?” You could hear Sharon say and your eyes shot open, and you stared at the floor. “The way you gave up that shield, deep down, you must know it’s all hypocrisy.”
“He knows,” Zemo chimed in with his wisdom. “And not so deep down.”
“By the way, how is the new Cap?” Sharon asked and you looked up a little higher to watch the exchange.
“Don’t get me started,” Buck replied, and you watched as Sharon came around the couch to sit beside him.
“Please,” she scoffed. “You buy into all that stars and stripes bullshit. Before you were his pet psychopath, you were Mr America! Cap’s best friend.”
You couldn't help the fist that formed by your side. What the fuck was her deal? You couldn’t just sit here and listen to this. You stood from your place and everyone looked your way for the first time since this conversation started. You looked over all of them and shook your head, and without a word went to the door that you had come in from, pulled it open, and shut it behind you.
You had no destination in mind besides just getting the hell out of the building for some air. The boots you had on clanked through the halls, and eventually you made it back to the front of the building, where the two guards glanced your way for a moment before going back to whatever they were doing. You walked past them and turned down the sidewalk, just far enough away so you could lean against the wall and cross your arms.
You just wanted to be alone for a bit. But that didn’t last very long before you could see Bucky coming your way.
He didn’t say anything at first as he joined your side. You both stared ahead at the lit up skyline of Madripoor. It still smelled a bit, not as strong as Low Town, but enough to where you noticed it. Bucky slid his hands into his pockets and you could see him glance your way.
“Wanna talk about it?” He asked.
“Not really,” you replied. After a few moments you glanced his way, and sighed. He was putting in an effort… Maybe you could too. “I just… Don’t get it. How can she believe that after everything that’s happened? People died to get the universe back to how it was. But that’s bullshit to her?
“Natasha’s sacrifice was a joke? Vision was just a machine? Tony’s life didn’t matter?” You asked and Bucky watched as you worked your way through your thoughts. You blinked a bit, maybe to fight back some tears, but he watched you shake your head and lean back against the wall. “I get that her life was turned upside down. But she wasn’t the only one.”
“Maybe not,” Bucky replied and turned to you fully. “But people deal with things differently. Sam and I owe it to her to make it right, and her tune may change.”
You nodded a bit at his words and let out a small hum. Bucky looked your stance over and gripped his hand closed in his pocket. “Are you okay..? About tonight-”
“Tonight was fine,” you reassured him. “Besides, we should be asking you that.”
“It was nothing,” Bucky tried to say and you shook your head.
“I saw that look in your eyes, Bucky,” you said, averting your gaze back to the skyline. “You can say it didn’t mean anything, but I know it did. We have the same fucked up past. Like you said, I may be the only one who understands what’s going on in your head.”
Bucky couldn’t help but curse himself for implanting that thought in your head, and when he didn’t move to talk about how tonight really made him feel, when you both did return to the rest of the group, the thought lingered in his mind. He so easily went into the Winter Soldier mode, it was too natural. And he couldn’t help but worry about that, but also how easy it may be for you if something triggers that repressed memory of the Phantom program. Sooner or later he knew the Wakandans would come, and if he could get back in their good grace’s… Could they help you too?

How did it get to this?
This was unlike Bucky. You sat on the couch while he sat on the floor, your legs on either side of him. But that wasn’t what was weird. You were touching him. Playing with his hair. No one has touched Bucky like this, let alone played with his hair. Frankly, he wasn’t sure what to do.
Should I allow it?
He subtly looked at Sam who shot him a warning glare as if he read his mind. He shouldn’t flinch from loving touch but he couldn’t help it. He went back to the question of how did it get to this. He knows how it got to this.

Bucky looked around, then looked at the ground, unsure of what to do. He didn’t feel like Tony would have wanted him to be there anyway. Sam knowingly looked at him before patting his back. He should feel something other than shame, but it was the only thing he felt.
After the funeral, Steve was putting back the stones. Part of him knew that his best friend wouldn’t be coming back when he hugged him the way he did.
It’s okay. He deserves a life too, Bucky told himself.
Still, nothing could have prepared him for the aged Steve that stood before him. They were supposed to grow old together.
A sense of relief passed through Bucky when he handed the shield to Sam; the last thing he wanted was to be responsible for Captain America’s shield.
After that, the Sokovia Accords were long forgotten, finally allowing for Bucky to live as a free man. Sam insisted that he move into his apartment downtown. That way, he wouldn’t be physically alone all the time.
There wasn’t much to move into the apartment - he has no real possessions anyway. Even so, Sam invited a friend to “help unpack”.
Y/N signed the Accords and sided with Tony. That’s why he had never met you before.
“I remember you! You almost knocked my teeth out at the airport,” you joked as you entered the apartment. He was slightly taken aback by your lighthearted teasing - he was so used to being treated like the enemy.
It was refreshing for Bucky to be around Sam and your playful banter.
“How are you affording this place Sammy, you aren’t even working” Y/N nagged.
“It’s courtesy of the Avengers protocol Tony left behind. You’re right though, my bank account is as dry as your elbows.”
Sam didn’t notice it but Bucky saw that your face fell just a little when Tony’s name was mentioned. It was only for a split second and he would’ve missed it if he had blinked.
“How hypocritical of you to say my elbows are ashy when I can see scratches on you from a mile away” you shot back. Bucky silently laughed to himself.
That day was fun. It was mostly spent putting his clothes away and organizing his room while you and Sam sat on his bed arguing about who Redwing likes better. When you all sat down to watch a movie, he noticed how you sat in between the large space between him and Sam. You looked like you contemplated who to lean on before you leaned to Sam. It would’ve been weird to lean on him since you just met him, he reasoned. Why was he even wondering why you didn’t lean on him?
Tumblr media
Present time
“How do you get your hair to be so soft Buck?” you wondered out loud. For a second he froze up. Only Steve calls him Buck.
“What are you talking about Y/N, it’s always fucking greasy” Sam snorted from the corner of the couch.
“High talk for someone who doesn’t have hair at all” Bucky quipped. The room filled with your laughter and Bucky found himself smiling too. He was beginning to see parts of the old James emerging around you.
His attention shifted back to your fingers stroking through his hair. “I love your hair. You look handsome when you put it in a man-bun,” you added. He smiled again before stopping himself.
What you said shouldn’t make him feel the way it did.
After you left that day, Sam and Bucky stood in the kitchen simply looking at each other while the silence suffocated their thoughts.
“She has feelings for you and if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you do too,” Sam stated it like it was a fact and sipped his water.
“You don’t know any better,” Bucky reassured, “she’s too smart to go for someone as fucked up as me.” They stood there for a while before Sam raised one eyebrow and peered at his friend mid-sip. Bucky shook his head and walked away.

As time went by, your presence at the apartment was a given and he found that he looked forward to being around you. It took a lot of visiting before he had a full conversation with you. It was about the latest mission sanctioned by the UN, something you both weren’t looking forward to.
“I can’t believe people even have it in them to create trouble after everything that’s happened” you defeatedly sighed.
“There will always be someone to fight or some war to win, in some corner of the world,” Bucky said, sharing the same defeated tone you used.
“Every time some new buffoon starts a problem, I feel personally attacked. Like they’re disrespecting the sacrifices people have made to save the stupid world.”
Bucky didn’t need to ask to know who you were talking about. He rested a hand on your hand that was clutching the countertop.
You looked down sadly. “I miss him, Buck” you whimpered with a slight crack in your voice. “He would be proud of you, Y/N,” Bucky pulled you in and kissed the top of your head.
That day, you leaned on Bucky instead of Sam. He was pleasantly surprised to feel your head on his shoulder and wanted to lean into it. When the movie ended, Sam began commenting on how stupid it was and stopped himself when he realized you two were knocked out on each other. Your head rested on his lap and Bucky had an arm around you with his legs stretched out on the rest of the L-shaped couch.
Bucky had taken up photography as a hobby. He would take pictures of things that were fascinating to him, things that he never expected to see in this lifetime.
As bad as it sounds, Sam never expected Bucky to sleep so peacefully in this lifetime. It also fascinated him how you, who felt everything, made Bucky feel this way about you. Bucky, who felt nothing.
So he took a picture of the sight in front of him using Bucky’s camera. ‘He can thank me for it later,’ Sam muttered to himself and covered you two with a blanket.
Tumblr media
Present time
Bucky wandered into his room with his head still in the clouds. He can’t feel this way about you. You would never feel the same way. Part of his mind reasoned with him; you deserve a life too, it told him. He refused. He doesn’t deserve a good life. Even if he couldn’t remember everyone he killed, which he did, he didn’t deserve love or peace in this lifetime. He would spend the rest of his life beating himself up as penance, if that’s what it meant to commemorate the lives lost to the Winter Soldier.
Bucky didn’t leave room for any other thoughts before he walked into his bathroom and picked up a pair of scissors.
Without a second thought, he began chopping off chunks of his hair while tears streaked his face.  He had no goal. He just snipped off whatever he could grab.
He stopped and fell to the floor. Crumpling up into fetal position, he held himself and rocked back and forth while he sniffled.
You’re too broken.
You’re not good enough.
Sam cautiously opened the door and took a few seconds to take in the mess before him. Tears that threatened to spill over were stopped by a determined Sam who walked over and wrapped his arms around Bucky.
“It’s gonna’ be alright man,” he whispered to his quivering friend.

-Before I even start I am digging the Puritan names. First Remember Patience and now Deliverance (and I would come to find ANOTHER MEM!!).
-My edition looses points or not having a ribbon even though it’s hardcover. This negatively impacts my reading experience for Reasons.
-Hold it. Is her uncles’ name really Razor Strap? I know Puritans were big on using random phrases from the Bible for their naming, but is that really a phrase in the Bible? Also, Sister Mem had me confused it was Mem from the last book for a hot second.
-SO do Mem and Deliverance just live with their uncle? Just the three of them? (The answer I quickly found was yes.)
-I appreciate the lesson on town politics. That's important for the Salem area in 1692ish.
-I am confused by what’s happening with the year. Why is it Dec 31, 1691, then Jan. 1, 1691, and then Jan. 2, 1691/2. There is a bullshit explanation in the about the author section. If you’re worried about Accuracy when it comes to the Julian vs Gregorian calendar, put something in the text. You’re average grade schooler isn’t going to jump to that . If I remember correctly, there’s something about the Gregorian calendar differing from the Julian calendar in the Anastasia book that is handled better. Liv explains other things to the reader, why not this?
-Why is a 12 year old more responsible than a 17 year old? Especially in 1692. Mem should at least have a higher opinion of herself in the family hierarchy and be preparing to keep her own house as a wife.
-Again, I feel Mem should be more mature than Liv.
-Liv can use her sister’s boy-craziness to her advantage. Mem is willing to shovel shit if there are attractive members of the opposite sex in the vicinity.
-Allergies=Witchcraft. That explains so much about me and my life. Though I suppose it makes sense from a 17th century Puritan POV.
-Mem wants to be a stepmom to 9 kids all of whom are most likely closer to her age than she would be to the potential husband?  The last part might not be a big concern in the time period but good gracious that’s too many kids for my liking.
-Age update- some of the kids would be older than her or her age.
-I feel the average target reader would need an explanation of what “God’s Elect” means. Most 12 year olds don’t have a strong grasp on post-Reformation Protestant Theology.
-Poor Liv. She wants to fit un but is failing spectacularly.
-Is Liv going to be among the accused? She’s not on the best of terms with the accusers and has been or will be associated with at least three people who were accused and killed.
- They used the strong trick for loose teeth in the 17th century? I have no evidence or data to argue one side or the other but I am suspicious. Somewhat amused, but suspicious.
-I find the tithing man hilarious. I want a stick with a fuzzy rabbit foot on one end and a knob for whacking people on the other. Also, he deserved getting thumped back by the one guy,
-I am calling bullshit on Goody Corey sniffing out only girl scent. Either it’s a bit or she’s a witch, not her husband. (Spoilers: He’s accused and refuses to confess so the town can’t take his land and is pressed to death while trying to get a confession. Post reading note: I totally forgot/didn’t know that Goody Corey was also accused and killed.)
-I don’t know really anything about the real Goody Corey, but she seems like a stand-in for an enlightened modern person, above the provincial notions of witchcraft and the commonplace racism toward Amer Indians. I’m not saying everyone thought they were the devil, but a majority thought that they were superior to the indigenous peoples of the American colonies.
-Mr. Cooper’s letter is too vague! We need deets!
-Because this is told through Livs’ eyes everyone asking about their uncle and checking in on them comes off as invasive and nosy but as an adult, a twelve year old and a seventeen year old have been left on a farm by themselves for almost two months at this point is an issue. Is he ever coming back?
-WHAT!? Goody Corey has a bi-racial son born when she was estranged from her first husband? Prepare for a wikipedia tangent because I had to a a google to corroborate this. Wikepedia backs this up but what it doesn’t back up is the timeline. I read her as in her 40s or 50s in the book. According to wikepedia (don’t judge me, it’s good for basic facts and a starting point) she was 72ish in 1692 and this biracial son was her first child who would have been 50ish at this point and was born before Martha Corey was ever married. *End Tangent* Good for her though if she did indeed five her husband an earful after Liv left.
-Hold on. Mr. Cooper wants to talk to Uncle Razor Strap about Mem marrying Darcy, not him. Mem is gonna be devastated.
-Would electricity have been a concept a) known in 1692 and b) be well enough known that a random 12 year old in the colonies with little formal schooling would be comfortable enough using the phrase “electrical lightning.” No, I will not be googling this. Googling historical facts is one thing, googling sciencey things is another thing entirely,
-Did the girls hear the stories and then claim to have witnessed ZYX or did they independently corroborate the stories? One is much less suspect than the other.
-At this point I wonder will we ever meet Uncle Razor Strap? Is he dead? Is he trying to get back to Salem? Is he abandoning them?
-I feel the leap to “Am I a witch?” after having a weird dream about nursing a baby Sarah Goode is sensible as someone who has been about to call the Vatican several times when their period was late. In those cases clearly the only explanation was pregnancy, even when physically impossible just as being a witch is Livs’ conclusion here.
-Hopefully the girls can just get out of the Salem area soon and the landlord giving them to the end of the month is a neat enough excuse.
-So Mem thinks that Goody Corey is a witch but is okay with Liv going over there?
-How scary it would be to worry that the one family member you have in the area, who should be protecting you because you’re 12, might accuse you of witchcraft.
-I am delighted the the horse can act as a chaperone. Really? Okay.
-How does the horse give permission to whisk a fainted person into the house? It’s a horse.
-So now Mem is forcing Liv to read her diary to her. Rude.
Thoughts on the Afterward
Meh. Mem marries Darcy but dies young so Liv gets her man. They return to Salem. They don’t go West like they talked about. Liv has a gagillion great grands. No one ever fount her journal. Meh. I’m happy she was happy and all but meh.
Overall Thoughts After Reading
It took almost 200 pages to get through four months. I think I just don’t care for the author. I should have liked this book. It ticks multiple boxes that should be my jam but something about it just... is a no for me. Maybe it’s because I have zero nostalgia for this book. It took me about 4.5 months to get through this book and finding it boring is one of them. No one seems like a well rounded character who has any growth. Last book Mem had a whole arc where she came to terms with losing her mother  but this time Liv didn’t really seem to change or grow.
I had high hopes. This book came out right as I was aging out of Dear America but I remember the hype around it on the Scholastic website. (Yes I was a wee nerd who hung out on the Scholastic website.) Sadly I was disappointed.
Also, we nope out of the actual trials. The first trial wasn’t held until JUNE. The book ends on April 30. Yes, we get to see the initial hysteria and flurry of accusations and arrests, but this was just the beginning. This seems like a cop-out.
Rating: 3/10 Sisterly Cat-Fights
Other contenders included False Accusations (this one seemed unfair because while I believe no one who was accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Hysteria was actually practicing witchcraft, I can’t say with confidence that the accusers were all lying. They may have believed honestly that they were afflicted by witches so calling them false accusations seem disingenuous.) and Bible Verses because Puritans. In the end, I had to honor the brutal way Mem and Live went after each other. Apparently in addition to being sickly, Mem was also small because how else could a 12 year old take her 17 year old sister like that.

Crockett Marcel x reader D’accord (Oneshot)
Written by: @anotheronechicagobog
Warnings: Mature themes, America has HORRENDOUS gun laws, seriously as a Canadian I get second hand anxiety about your gun laws/judicial system (even though Canada’s is far from perfect)/healthcare system, April is not written well here but I’m gonna do a nice fic for her soon, pardon my French (literally, quite a bit of this fic is in French with translations)
Tumblr media
You’d been surprised to find another Francophone in Chicago. After you’d moved there from Quebec, you weren’t expecting much. Only a couple of “Oui, oui,” and “hon, hon, hon”’s from some unintentionally insulting Americans. So when, during your fifth shift, you swore in your native tongue “merde!” you’d been pleasantly surprised when Crockett had responded without missing a beat.
You’d shown him French-Canadian food, he’d shown you Cajun food, and you had each gained a confidant at med. And you’d both needed it. You were in a new country with very different social customs and laws, and April had kissed him while Choi was deployed leaving him a magnet for gossip. You’d both just needed someone to talk to, and speaking French with each other was just an added comfort.
“What did Doris say this time?”
“I don’t care that people are talking about me, I really don’t. Gossip is just part of hospital life and that’s fine, but I am so tired of being glared at and avoided. People aren’t even bothering to get to know me. I am just so tired about having to fight for a basic level of confidence in my colleagues for something that I didn’t even do! She kissed me, she just walked up and kissed me, how is this my fault?”
“I’m sorry Cherie.”
“I know. How was your day?”
“Anderson pretended to shoot at me again.”
“Seriously? You should report him to HR.”
“I don’t know, I don’t want to be overreacting.”
“He is pretending to have a gun and waving it at you on a daily basis because he knows that you are from a country with decent gun laws. What about the day he comes in with a real gun? And loaded? What if he actually shoots you? You need to report him, Cher.”
“Okay, I will. At the end of the day.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You sat at Molly’s away from the main group, shunned by your colleagues. “It was just a joke, Y/N, can’t you take a joke?” But it didn’t feel like a joke. Not to you. You already felt like you should be wearing a kevlar vest on a regular basis; you didn’t need to be made fun of for your very real fear. You were busy moping when someone plopped down in the stool beside you. “Mon journée a sucé. Dites-moi que le vôtre était meilleur.” (My day sucked. Tell me yours was better)
“Voyez-vous la foule de gens qui me regardent et qui parlent de moi là-bas?” (Do you see the crowd of people looking at me and talking about me there)
“Zut. J'espérais vraiment que ça irait mieux.” (Damn. I was really hoping it would get better)
“Moi aussi.” (Me too)
“The hell are you two speaking? Swedish?”
“... It’s French, Hermann.”
“If you say so Y/N... You guys want another round?”
“Yes, please, kind sir.” Trying to make a joke with the man everyone said had a heart of gold and a belly full of laughs at all times.
“Well, okay then. French people are weird.” Both you and Crockett sucked in a breath. Explaining was always the hardest part. “We are not French people. Crockett is Cajun, and I am French-Canadian.”
“Okay, I don’t know what Cajun is, but isn’t French-Canadian just a Canadian who speaks French?”
“Mon Dieu.” (My God)
“Sacre bleu (Damn it), Hermann. No, a French-Canadian is not just a Canadian who speaks French, and unless you want to start a war in a country you don’t even live in, I advise you to refrain from speaking in that manner again. And just for the record, a Cajun person is someone descended from Acadia settlers in Nova Scotia who left for Louisianna to flee the British.”
“... Okay. I’m sorry I asked.” You just held your breath as Crockett swore under his breath. You opened your eyes, grabbed your glass over bourbon and downed it. “Je sais que je viens juste d'arriver, mais je veux déjà partir.” (I know I just arrived, but I already want to leave)
“Allons-y alors.” (Let’s go then) Marcel threw cash down on the bar before you could argue and helped you put your coat on. “Avez-vous déjà mangé des tapas? J'ai entendu dire qu'il y avait un super endroit à quelques pâtés de maisons d'ici.” (Have you ever eaten tapas? Heard there is a great place a few blocks from here)
“Montrez le chemin.” (Lead the way)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There was a new hot button topic of gossip the next day at MED. You and Marcel. Of course, no one was that cordial. ‘He couldn’t have a nurse so he went for an intern?’, ‘What, she thought being an intern is too difficult so she’s hooking up with a doc so she doesn’t fail?’. None of anything they were saying was true. First of all, April kissed and then rejected him all while she was dating someone else, second, he wasn’t even your attending. You did your ED rotation before he got here. You were on your pediatrics rotation, and kicking ass at it. Third, he didn’t know anyone here besides you thanks to April, so who exactly was he gonna say ‘give her a pass for me’ to? You just rolled your eyes and continued working. At the end of the day, that was what would speak for you.
You hadn’t been very close to April, or anyone in the ED really, they’d all had their own drama going on the entire time you were there, so you just faded into the background. But now, April was making an effort to talk to you. You would have found it odd, had it not been at the time the rumours were really flying, and if you hadn’t seen the burning question behind her eyes. She was jealous. She damn well wouldn’t admit it, but she was. And you were angry at her, and at least you were grown up enough to admit that. She had hurt Crockett. Damaged his work relationships and reputation before he’d even started. So you acted like you enjoyed her company. You talked about literally anything that wasn’t Crockett Marcel. You watched as her questioning eyes grew more and more desperate. If she was going to come to you acting like a jealous girlfriend she should have had the decency to be honest. But she wasn’t. And Crockett was paying the price. So you tortured her a bit. It wasn’t that bad, honestly. Plus, what made her think she had any right to know about relationships you may or may not be in? But her feelings did become noticeable. To the other nurses, doctors, interns. Suddenly everyone was aware that she had kissed Crockett, and that Ethan wasn’t the only doctor she had feelings for. You felt bad for Crockett, he’d gotten sucked into a wormhole before he even knew his feet were leaving the ground. The same thing could be said for Dr. Choi’s fist.
You pushed back the curtain and marched over to Crockett who was too busy arguing with Maggie to notice you at first. “Have you gotten a CT done yet?”
“Oh- Dr. Y/L/N. Uh, let me check. Uh... Here.” Maggie handed you and a skeptical Will the tablet with Crockett’s head CT already loaded. The black and white image should have comforted you. It looked good, no injuries or anomalies. But you kept looking, you kept gripping the tablet no matter how much your knuckles, and fingers, and wrists were starting to hurt. “Cher?” You slowly looked up, Maggie and Halstead had left the room at some point. “You seein’ something Halstead didn’t?”
You didn’t answer. You didn’t have the voice to. Instead, you regarded his face intently. Choi had only gotten in a single punch, thankfully, so there was only bruising around his right eye. You moved to stand in front of him, standing in between his legs which were dangling off the side of the bed. “Cher?” The bruise was already purple, the section around the forehead turning black. Your lips pressed into a firm line. After setting the tablet on the end table you gently took Crockett’s face in your hands. Ignoring the rest of him, you gently drifted your fingers around the bruising. Your stomach sunk the more you looked at it. It wasn’t inflamed, there wasn’t any bleeding, his CT was clear. But you just couldn’t shake the weight in your gut. You didn’t even know what you were looking for. But you kept looking. “Cher.” No inflammation. “Cher.” No bleeding. “Cher.” Clear CT. “Cher.” Keep looking. “Cher.” Crockett delicately grabbed your wrist, finally grabbing your attention, bringing more than the bruise on his eye into your focus. “I’m okay, Cher.” His eyes were boring into yours, pleading for you to listen to him. He moved his hand from your wrist up overtop of your hand before intertwining your fingers together and leaning his face into your clasped hands at the side of his face.
“D’accord?” (Okay?)
“D’accord.” (Okay) He smiled gingerly. Still looking at you with soft eyes that made you melt he opened his mouth, you could tell that words in his native language were on the tip of his tongue, when the curtains in the room were pushed back suddenly. April stood, tall, strong, and with a look of utter betrayal on her face. No one in the room said anything, no one in the room breathed. Slowly, as if she were avoided a cornered coyote, April backed out of the room, her chest starting to shake, her eyes watering. Soon you were left alone in the room, your hand still wrapped in Crockett’s. Now in full view of the entire ED staff and gossip mill.

“Y/N! Are you almost done packing?” Your dad called from down the hall, you wanted to say yes but you had gotten distracted with an old photo album that had been pushed to the back of your closet.
“Almost!” You yelled back, sitting on the floor and flipping through pages instead of continuing to pack your life into bags for your departure to university tomorrow.
Instead of an answer back the sounds of heavy footsteps instead flowed down the hallway before stopping at your open door. You looked up at your fathers with a sheepish smile while the took in the disaster that your bedroom had become.
“What the hell kid? It looks like a clothes bomb blew up in here,” your dad said before approaching you, your pops was close behind.
“I know and I was packing I just got —“
“Distracted,” your pops finished and sat across from you, pulling your dad down with him and onto his lap. You laughed lightly at the annoyed look on his face.
“Well, this better be a good distraction,” Tony said and motioned for you to show him what you were looking at.
“It is actually. Just what the hell is going on with my hair in this photo?” You asked turning the photo album around and pointing at a specific picture.
Your dad couldn’t hold back a laugh at it at the same time your pops shouted out, “Language!”
“What? Dad said it like 2 seconds ago,” you argued.
“Well that’s because your Dad has terrible habits that I hoped he wouldn’t pass onto out child,” Steve sighed dramatically and used the hand not wrapped around his husband to pinch the bridge of his nose, “I was wrong.”
“Oh like you don’t swear,” your dad said and took the photo album from you.
“I remember this day,” Tony began wistfully, “It was a few months after we adopted you and your first day of daycare. The fossil and I tried to do something with your hair and well…”
———
“Tony, did you pack Y/N’s bag already?” Steve asked as his husband walked into the kitchen their sleepy three-year-old in his arms.
“Yeah, last night. I left it on the couch,” he replied as he slipped her into her highchair and poured some apple juice into a sippy cup before handing it to her.
A happy, “Tank you dada,” followed and Tony gave her a kiss on the head.
“You’re welcome peanut,” he said before moving to help his husband with breakfast but Steve gave him a look that told him to just sit and wait before he lit something on fire. Tony rolled his eyes.
At the sound of a clatter, both men looked towards their daughter who was already giggling and far more awake than before. She had thrown her cup to the ground and was thoroughly amused at the sound.
Tony was quick to pick it up and place it back in front of her. But much like a cat, she was excited to push it back off as Tony became distracted at slicing grapes in half for her snack.
Y/N laughed even louder at the sound this time and it was like music to her father’s ears.
Tony walked back to his daughter and lifted the sippy cup from the ground and when he looked back at her she was making grabby hands for it, giving him a megawatt smile.
“‘ippy cup pwease,” she spoke and Tony all but melted.
“This sippy cup?” Tony asked, staying at eye-level and holding it in front of his face.
“Yeah!” She said happily, but when Tony leaned in close she grabbed his cheeks instead.
“Are you gonna throw it down?” He asked.
“Yeah!” She said and Tony heard Steve laugh behind him.
“Why?” Tony asked, genuinely curious.
“For big boom,” Y/N said, beaming while throwing her arms out in an explosive motion.
Tony was sure he had the cutest kid to ever grace the earth, even if the dark curls were still a mess and she was in rumpled princess pajamas. Tony grinned as she dropped her arms in favor of grabby hands again.
“Okay but only one more. Pop’s old ears can’t handle loud noises,” he said handing it back to her as Steve scoffed. As soon as it was back in her hands it hit the floor again and Y/N let out another trill laugh.
When Tony stood up straight after picking the cup up for the third time he felt arms wrap around his waist, he was quick to lean into his husband’s chest. Steve placed a plate in front of their daughter and suddenly she forgot all about the sippy cup.
“Tank you, papa,” Y/N said and picked up her little to scoop up a bit of scrambled egg.
“You’re welcome sunshine,” Steve smiled at her, and instead of eating their own breakfast, the two men kept their eyes on their daughter. Even doing the most mundane things she was all they ever wanted to look at and they were both sure that would never change.
After the three of them finished their breakfast Tony cleaned Y/N up and put her in a cute first-day outfit consisting of a skirt, glittery leggings, colorful sneakers, and an iron man t-shirt.
When Steve entered his daughter’s room, dressed for the day, he only rolled at what Tony had decided to put her in but said nothing about it. After all her little bag had Captain America’s shield on it.
What really had Steve tilting his head however was whatever was happening with his daughter’s hair. Tony had successfully combed it out but now it looked like a cloud atop her head instead of her regular curls.
“Steve, thank god, help. I don’t know what I’m doing,” Tony said as he spotted him in the doorway, Y/N looked his was too.
“Hi Papa,” she said smiling at him. Steve’s heart leaped at the sight of his happy little girl.
“Hello little sunshine,” he grinned making his way over to the pair and picking her up to place a kiss on her cheek before sitting on her bed with her placed in his lap.
“Tony, what happened?” He asked running his fingers through her unbelievably soft hair.
“Well I thought since I’ve never done hair before the first step would be combing it out but then it doubled in size and I was lost,” he sighed playing with the comb in his hands.
Steve sighed, “Well I’ve never done hair either. Should we call someone? Nat?” He asked.
“On a mission.”
“Pepper?”
“Vacation.”
Suddenly Steve’s eyes lit up.
“Rhodey?” There was hope in his voice until Tony said.
“UN conference until 3,” and Steve’s shoulder slumped.
“We could try to tie it up,” Tony offered and he was quick to nod.
“Okay babycakes, papa is gonna put your hair in a ponytail,” Steve said and was met with a shake of the head.
“No ponytail, twisties,” Y/N told him moving her hands in a spiraling motion and making a whooshing noise with her mouth.
Steve looked to Tony for help on what she meant but the younger man only shrugged, equally confused.
“What’s twisties?” Tony asked it must have been something her foster parents did for her.
In response, the three-year-old took two pieces of hair on either side of her head and tried her best to move her hands in circular motions again whilst making the whooshing sound again.
“Okay~,” Steve said and looked at Tony again, “Your dada is gonna do it for you.”
“Me?!” Tony asked, incredulous.
“Yes you, you’ve got careful scientist fingers,” Steve said and Tony rolled his eyes.
“Whatever but if it comes out wrong it’s your fault,” he replied, arms stretched out to take hold of his daughter, she giggled at the faces he made at her before sitting her in front of him on the floor.
“Can you bring me her hair stuff? I need a water bottle, a brush, a comb, and some gel or cream or something,” Tony spoke and Steve nodded quick to get the items and return.
“Alright here goes,” Tony said before getting to work.
In the end, Y/N was left with six parts in her hair that were pretty even and each secured by a colorful rubber band and placed in two-strand twists before being secured by two more rubber bands at the ends.
It wouldn’t have been so bad if not for the fact that Tony didn’t wet your hair enough and your twists stood up like coolio braids . . . well, maybe not quite as stiff.
“How’s that?” Tony asked, moving back slightly to admire his work. Steve had been silent the entire time and he wasn’t sure if that was a good sign or not.
“Well t’s certainly a style,” Steve said and Tony glared at him before holding a mirror in front of his daughter.
“What do you think Y/N/N?” He asked and she laughed.
“Pointy twisties,” she smiled, at least she didn’t hate it.
Tony sighed, “I can live with that,” he kissed her cheek as Steve spoke up again.
“Good because we’ve gotta get going if we don’t want her to be late of her first day,” Steve said and they quickly got their things before heading to the tower’s elevator. Before Y/N pushed the button — it was her favorite thing to do — Tony called her name.
“Smile sweetheart,” he said and Y/N gave him her best toothy grin, so wide, her eyes closed and Tony chuckled, that’d be his new lock screen, he thought before taking several more.
“Picture with papa and dada?” she asked after Tony’s pseudo photoshoot.
“Of course sunshine,” Steve said before picking her up and Tony held his phone up for several selfies.
No that’d be his new lock screen.
When Steve set her on the floor again she was quick to press the button and before they knew it they were on their way to the daycare center.
When they arrived Y/N’s hands were secure in both of her fathers and the closer the got to the door the tighter their grips became on her.
“Good morning, Mr. and Mr. Stark-Rogers,” said Mrs. Flores, she was a middle-aged woman with kind eyes, and seeing her again Tony realized why they had chosen this daycare.
“Good morning, Mrs. Flores,” Steve spoke, giving her a Captain America smile, “We’d like you to meet our daughter Y/N,” He said looking down at the now uneasy three-year-old.
Mrs. Flores gave a playful gasp before kneeling in front of her, the woman’s flowing skirt billowed around her and made it look like she was sitting on a flower bed.
“Well hello there dumpling,” She began and Y/N attempted to hide behind Tony’s legs, “I’m Mrs. Flores but a lot of people call me Mrs. Flower,” she told her and removed a fake flower from its place behind her ear and held it out, “Do you like flowers Y/N?”
Y/N nodded, still shy but Tony and Steve kneeled down as well and Steve removed his hand from hers to rub soothing circles on her back.
“You can have this one,” Mrs. Flores said and Y/N hesitated but took it in the end, a smile tugging at her lips.
“Alright Y/N/N, your dad and I are gonna get ready to go now okay?” Steve spoke softly and Y/N looked at him before tilting her head to the side, her twisties falling slightly at the movement.
“Go?” She asked fear at the edges of her voice.
“Yeah,” Tony began, “We’ve gotta go to work now,” he said through his tone was not convincing.
Tears began to well in the girls’ big Y/E/C eyes and her voice began to break as she spoke.
“I go work with you,” she said and wrapped her arms around Tony’s neck.
“No sweetheart, you have to stay here with the other kids,” Tony spoke but wrapped his arms around her as all three adults stood up.
“You get to stay with Mrs. Flores all day and then we’ll come to get you,” Steve said, patting his daughter’s back.
“No,” Y/N said, rapidly shaking her head as she gripped her dad tighter.
“Y/N we’ll have so much fun here. We can color and play games, and you’ll make lots of new friends,” Mrs. Flores tried.
“Sweetheart we have to go, your pops, and I will be back before you know it,” Tony told her moving the young girl to his hip as she began to cry.
“No, I go with you,” she said through her tears.
“But if you’re here you get to make friends,” Tony spoke as Steve tried his best to wipe away the tears flowing down her cheeks.
“No friends,” she said and cried harder.
“May I?” Mrs. Flores asked holding her hands out for the little girl. Tony nodded and handed her to her but this only turned her sobs into wails.
“Y/N, we’re going to have so much fun today, I promise and your daddies even packed your favorite snacks for you,” even the woman’s soothing tone did little to ease the girls’ distress.
“And when we get back we’ll get ice cream,” Tony said but this also didn’t do much.
“The first day is always the hardest,” Mrs. Flores told the two men, “I’ll calm her down but I’m afraid if you stay any longer it’ll make it harder,” she said bouncing the crying toddler on her hip as she began to quiet down slightly.
“Alright,” Tony said but it was obvious that he wasn’t convinced in the slightest. They both kissed her cheek and told her how much they loved her before taking their leave. They hesitated slightly as they turned back and watched through the window as you used grabby hands over the teacher’s shoulder to try and get them to come back.
Tony and Steve looked at each other with respectively glassy eyes and a silent question if this was the right thing to do. Steve nodded and wrapped his arm around his husband’s shoulders before they both turned and left the building.
When they did pick you up at around three it was a race to see who could get to your classroom first. They ignored stares from other parents and teachers. When they looked through the window they were happy to see you coloring happily with a little boy. Mrs. Flores saw them before you did and approached them.
“How was she?” Steve asked quickly.
“It was rocky for the first hour or so but as more kids showed up she became more interested in who they were and what games they were playing. Peter over there spent nearly the whole day with her,” she smiled and the two men found themselves smiling too.
“Do you think tomorrow will be better?” Tony asked.
“Absolutely,” Mrs. Flores told them encouragingly.
“Y/N,” she called, “Look who’s here,” their daughter was quick to look over and give them a tooth-achingly sweet smile.
“That’s my daddies,” she told Peter and the boy waved at them, “Bye Petey,” Y/N told him and sprinted into the awaiting heroes’ arms.
They both gave her a kiss on the cheek then Tony grabbed her bag and coat as Steve picked her up.
“Bye Mrs. Flowers,” Y/N said waving.
On the way out the trio passed a woman with long brown hair and glasses as Y/N began to babble on about her first day at daycare. When she was in her car seat and they were pulling off she interrupted her own monologue with a question.
“Ice cream now?” She spoke.
“Of course sunshine,” Tony said and began to drive to the nearest shop.
——
“Huh, so that’s why we get ice cream after my first day,” you said as your fathers ended their story.
“Yeah and you’re the first day of college we won’t get to,” Steve said a bit sad as he held his husband tighter to his chest.
“Aw don’t worry pops we can eat ice cream over FaceTime,” you said giving them a smile as you dad handed you back the photo album and you placed it in your lap.
“Wouldn’t be the same. Maybe we’ll just fly out there for the day and meet you after classes,” your dad said a mischievous smile on his face.
“I’d say please don’t but it seems like you already have that plan in motion. Aren’t you like the SHIELD director these days?” You asked tilting your head to the side and your curls fell slightly into your face with the movement.
“Only when I feel like it,” he joked and your pops rolled his eyes.
“That’s a yes,” he said and gave his husband a kiss on the cheek.
“Ew, get a room,” you said and Tony stuck his tongue out at you, which prompted you to do it back.
“Speaking of rooms,” Steve began, “There will be no funny business in college. You’re there for art and science, not boys … or girls. Are you into girls? We’ve never had that talk,” he said rubbing at his temples.
“Ignore him, just please use protection. Some of us are too young to be grandparents,” he said throwing a thumb over his shoulder.
“Oh jeez, I’m 18 and you already have me the talk. I don’t need a 2.0 college version. The first one traumatized me enough,” you shuddered at the memory.
“We know, we just want you to be safe and you’ve never been this far from us for this long. You’re still our little girl sunshine,” your dad grinned holding your hand in his own.
“And we love you,” pop finished.
“I love you guys too.”

Secret States Chapter 14
Figuring Out America
America POV
A faint buzzing noise began pulling my mind out of sleep. My thoughts were muddled and I couldn't recognize the noise. Sleep kept it pulling down on my brain, and for once, I let it win. I began sinking deeper into sleep before I heard a voice. I groaned and moved my face into the pillow, trying to stay asleep.
"Dad. You need to wake up." The voice pierced into my tired mind and I began pulling open my eyes and lifting up my head, seeing NATO standing in my room.
"Nate?" I questioned, eyes drooping and my head dropping back towards the pillow. This is why I hated sleeping. I always felt so tired when I woke up. I'm NATO sighed.
"As much as I like making sure you sleep, now isn't the time. UN wants you to meet them and the other organizations to talk about you being a union." NATO explained. That woke me up slightly and I began pulling my body off the bed, rubbing at my still drooping eyes.
"Why? There were, and are countries that are technically unions too. Why do they want to see me?" I said as I stood up and yawned, before remembering what I had done before I fell asleep.
"Oh no." I said. I had cried on Maman. Now she was going to worry about me. My family was already suspicious enough after I freaked out about Uncle North asking about the 1860s. Now my family was going to be concerned for me.
What if they tried to help me? They would just see how much of a weak, worthless failure I am, and realize I'm not worth their time. If they find about any of this, I won't be able to prove Dad wrong. I didn't need anyone's help. I was fine on my own.
I couldn't be seen as weak. I couldn't. Sharing my difficult history would just make me seem weak. If they saw me as weak I wouldn't be able to protect my kids. I had failed to protect them too many times before. I had to be strong. I had to be unbreakable.
I was the United States of America. I wasn't allowed to be weak.
"Dad? Are you alright?" NATO asked. I nodded. NATO didn't look convinced, but he didn't question it.
"UN also asked for me to come with you. I'll meet you in your car when you're ready. Please don't fall back asleep." NATO said, walking out of my room.
I groaned. I didn't want to do UN's interrogation, but it's not like I had a choice. ——————————————————
UN's POV
I was waiting in an empty meeting room with the other unions, waiting for America to show up. I wanted to discuss America's claims, the fact that he was a union. He had the black eyes like the rest of us unions, but so did his state, New York, which makes me think that black eyes aren't just reserved to unions.
I looked up as America opened the door, not wearing sunglasses for once. While I had seen America's eyes before, it was brief, and quick. I don't think he liked showing them. NATO followed America, his father, into the room before they both took a seat at the table.
"So you know why you're here?" African Union, or AU asked. America nodded.
"How can you be a union?" ASEAN asked, jumping right into the questions, with the question I knew we all wanted the answer too. NATO snorted.
"Britain's a union to, kinda technically. Why are you so confused by Dad being one when Britain never kept the fact that he was a political union secret?" He questioned. I paused at his question.
I had never thought about that. Britain was a political union, but that was common knowledge, or at least public knowledge, so it was never a big deal. But America being a union was a secret. Not many countries knew about it.
That's what made it strange. America said it was because the states didn't want him to, and I understood that he probably couldn't argue against it. I knew that unions, depending on how much influence the countries or states or territories or whatever made them up, were sometimes at the mercy of what their parts decided.
Their decisions were the products of decisions their parts made, even if it wasn't what they personally believed. But America hadn't let anything slip about it he wanted to tell anyone. He seemed cautious about people knowing, but it could be concern for his states, his children, that caused it. Not because he wanted people to know.
America was always a bit of a private person. I always thought it was because of his isolation that other countries had told me about. How he spend almost a century ignoring people and doing his own thing. And even after being forced into global politics by the world wars and becoming a world power, I always though his want for privacy originated from that and the Cold War.
I never imagined any if this.
"We understand how Britain is a political union. We knew about that. We didn't know about America, and the way he works is different than America." EU said. NATO nodded, and looked towards America.
"I'm a union because I cannot be a country because I violate three requirements of a country, and my government follows the definition of a union more than it does the definition of a country. My constitution even refers to me as a union." America explained.
"What requirements of a country don't you follow?" Organization of American States, or OAS asked.
"Definite territory, sovereignty over an area, and one government, although I'm not really sure if the last one is a requirement, but I have over 350 governments, and I don't think a country is supposed to have that." America said, smiling slightly.
"350?!" Caribbean Community or CC questioned. That was a high number. I thought America only had 50 states, and his territories. Were some of the governments included town governments or something? There's no way America could have that many sovereign pieces.
"There is no way you have that many governments. Not even UN has that many governments." World Health Organization, or WHO (Yes we make fun of him for that name. Why wouldn't we?) cut it. America shrugged.
"Well I do." He said, amusement glinting in his eyes as he tried to hide the smile on his face, "I have my states, and then the tribes. There are 326 Native American reservations in my country. I have no power, or little power in those reservations. They're managed by one or more tribes, like Havasupai or Miccosukee."
"Your native people's countryhumans are alive?" OAS asked. America nodded.
"Thankfully." He said, his voice quiet. NATO puts his hand on America's shoulder and whispered something in his ear. America shook his head and NATO put his hand down and gave America-his father, a sad and resigned look.
What was that about? I didn't get a chance to think much on it before BRICS spoke up.
"How are you even considered a country if you have over 350 governments. How has no one seen all of those countryhumans?" He asked. America shrugged.
"You guys are idiots. Plus my children, or most of them at least, kept themselves hidden. The tribes don't stay in this world very often either. They never did before colonization, and with their history and cultures in risk of being lost forever, they'd rather spend time with their people keeping as much of their culture alive as possible." America explained.
That made since, from what I knew at least. I didn't know much about America's history, or the history of my parts, and learning about my different pieces was always something I enjoyed, especially since it was rare. Not many countries enjoyed talking about their past.
"Why don't you get involved with the reservations? It sounds like you get involved with the states frequently, but you've neglected to mention how you run the reservations." OAS asked
"That's like asking me why I don't govern Mexico. I'm not going to govern another nation." America said. I froze up. Did America recognize the reservations as independent nations? I had always prided myself on knowing the names of every country, and every who hoped to be a country, like Kosovo, who was still bugging me about her UN membership.
How did I miss 326 countryhumans that were recognized as nation by the nation they used to be a part of?
"I'm sorry, but did you say your Native American reservations were nations?" League of Arab States said. America raised a hand and shook it in a so-so motion before sighing.
"My government recognizes them as being domestic dependent nations. Basically independent, but also not. It's a weird and complicated relationship between my government and theirs. They don't hold any strong connections to the state or federal fovernment, which is a big reason for why they're considered separate entities." America explained.
"What about the states?" Nordic Council asked.
"The states and I share sovereignty. I handle things that involve the entire country, multiple states, and international things. The states handle internal things like education and whatnot on their own. That's why I couldn't  impose a federal quarantine when you were asking me to. That's not a power I have. It's one the states have. Quarantining was up to them and their governments." America explained.
Now I felt bad. I had been one of the people pressuring America the most to impose a federal quarantine. To find out that he wasn't able to do that makes me feel like an asshole. I had just been putting extra stress on America, and finding out about his children, that extra stress probably wasn't good for him.
"Seriously? What can you do then?" Union of South American Nations (USAN) asked. America laughed.
"In terms of what I control directly, not a lot. Congress, who is in charge of lawmaking, declaring war, making treaties, setting the federal budget and a whole lot more, is made up of people the the states elect. So Congress is more of the states than me. I can have some influence in Congress, but general decisions in Congress are based around what each senator and representative wants for their states." America explained.
That was common though. Decisions by unions were normally based around the countries deciding what action the union should take for its own best interests. America really did seem like a union. There where just little pieces that didn't make sense. America's states got no international relations, outside of what America chooses that is.
That wasn't something that happened in unions. While I do believe that America is a union, I also thing that he might not be a union in the same sense me and the other unions in this room where. But if that was true, what exactly was the United States of America?
I tuned back into the conversation as Arab Maghreb Union asked another question. I felt bad questioning America like this. He seemed uncomfortable with it, but that might just be because he had kept the very thing we're questioning him about secret. America was a very confusing person.
"What powers do you have, powers that are just yours and have nothing to do with your state?" Arab Maghreb Union asked.
"I don't have a lot. The executive branch is fully mine, but it's main purpose is enforcing the laws that the states decide in Congress. That branch, through the president, can veto laws, but mainly they enforce laws through the various government organizations like the FBI or the CIA. The only power that branch has that is not affected by Congress is executive orders, but those don't have the same effect as laws made by Congress do." America explained.
"Are you saying that you don't have any real power?"  Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) asked leaning forwards over the table. I saw a flash of fear in America's eyes that was quickly hidden by the disinterested look he's been wearing the entire meeting.
"I do have power. I just don't have full control over it. It's the same story for all of you." He snapped, becoming defensive. CELAC looked confused at America's reaction before her eyes widened in realization.
"Lo siento. It's just weird thinking of you as a union when I've, we've always thought of you as a country. I didn't mean any offense to you. It's a just big change, thinking of you as a union." She said.
"Nothing's changed that much." America said. Maybe not for him, but for us, a lot had. We were no strangers to countries being unions, USSR taught us that much, but America being one and keeping it secret was strange. Britain had also been around when America first became a country, so it's not he was the only country that was made up of states.
So why did he hid it? I know he said it was the states choice, but I think that's answer is bullshit. Sure, it might hold some truth, but it definitely wasn't the full reason.
"Maybe not for you, but for us a lot is different. Especially because you keep acting different and mature, instead of the incompetent idiotic fool you normally act like, no offense. We're not sure what to make of all this." Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIS) said.
"And how can you be a union if your states don't act like counties?" International Organization of Turkic Culture (TÜRKSOY) said.
"Because I'm not entirely a union. I also have characteristics of a country, and I'm also an empire. So I don't really know what the hell I am. I'm considered a country by other countries, I'm considered a union by my governments and my people, and I'm considered an empire because of my overseas territories." America explained.
"I though you said you were a union?" AU asked. America shrugged.
"I am. I'm just a lot of other things as well. I don't really know what I'm supposed to be. My states and I have always considered me a union, but the countries don't and consider me a country. And since I'm not like the rest of you and do have characteristics of a country, I am a union, just not the same kind of union as the rest of you." America explained before standing up.
"Where are you going?" BRICS asked.
"I'm done with this interrogation. I'm leaving." America said before leaving, NATO watching him before pulling out his phone.
"What are you doing?" USAN asked, tilting her head to the side.
"Calling someone." NATO said, "Dad's going to need it."
What did that mean?

(Not my GIF)
(This is my shitty border though. First try and all.)
You weren’t expecting it. Neither of you were.
That didn’t mean you weren’t happy with how it ended.
Bucky Barnes x Reader Fic.
Warnings: I don’t think there are any in this one? Sad Boi Hours, Firearms, A lot of dialogue from a lot of people.
Tumblr media
“You haven’t heard from Frank? At all?” Karen worries over a cup of coffee the next day and you roll your eyes.
“Nope. I’ve tried calling him but, it goes straight to voicemail.” You sigh as you stare out the coffee shop window at the people passing by. “He’s fine though. I can feel it.”
“It’s not him we’re worried about.” Elektra snorts before reconciling her words. “Not that we’re particularly worried about which river they’re going to find Patrick in a few days from now.”
That brings a faint smile to your tired face. You doubt that your brother would actually kill Patrick. Frank had begun carving out a new life for himself here as and you knew he wouldn’t jeopardize it for the likes of Patrick Vaughn.
So, no, your brother wouldn’t kill him but, maiming wasn’t out of the question. A few broken bones wouldn’t lay too heavily on your conscience either.
Your phone goes off for the fifth time in as many minutes and you reach for it quickly.
“Ugh. Again? Who’re you texting that’s so important?” Elle groans, obviously slighted by the distraction. “This is the first time we’re seeing each other since you found out about Pat. We demand your undivided attention.”
“And you’ll get it.” You promise. “This is about my door needing to be fixed. Bucky asked me when I was free so he could get it done.”
The two women sat across from you share a look as you type out a response, laughing at the photo of Sam and Steve that was sent with it. It was abundantly clear the Captain America had no idea how to use a drill when you see him frustratedly trying to get it to turn on while Sam stands in the back, holding the battery in his hand, with a finger on his lips.
It was a comfort; knowing that the all mighty Avengers were just normal people.
“We’re calling him Bucky now?” Karen hums as she leers over the table. “And he’s offering to fix your door?”
You knew that tone and you knew what she was implying. For some reason it brings an irritated heat to your face.
Foggy had been implying the same things when you had called him last night and you weren’t sure how to broach the topic.
Sure, Bucky was a nice guy but, you knew he wasn’t over Claire and you definitely weren’t over Patrick no matter how much you wished you were. You couldn’t run away from fifteen years like he had and, just because everyone else was sick and tired of your previous relationship (which they had made abundantly clear in every call you made last night) you weren’t.
No. Your mind kept replaying all of the good times you had with your ex-husband. After what he had said to you yesterday, you wanted nothing more than to erase him from your mind but, it didn’t work that way.
Having Bucky, someone who was going through the same thing, helped immensely but, after he left last night and you were left alone with your thoughts, you crumbled. Your breakdown had almost been as bad as when you’d first met the super soldier. You were hurt and you wished your friends would stop telling you how much they hated the man you had been married to. It didn’t help. All it did was make you feel stupid and weak for not seeing the signs in the first place. They made you feel like shit every time they pointed out how poorly he treated you and they had no clue.
How do you tell your friends that? They were trying to be supportive but, it wasn’t the support you needed right now. Right now, you just needed someone to sit next to you and listen to you rant while watching cheesy movies and eating your favorite take out.
You needed Bucky as pathetic as that sounds.
“Yes. He’s fixing my door because Frank kicked it off of its hinges in a fit of rage last night.” You reply curtly when you realize you had been silent for an odd amount of time. “He should be at my place in a half hour so-“
“Okay, let’s get ready to go then.” Elektra cuts in. She’s pulling on her coat and throwing away your empty cups before you can protest. “What? I want to meet him and I’m sure Karen would too. Right Karen?”
She poses the sentence as a question but, you know it’s not. Her tone leaves no room for you to say no and you have to remind yourself that she was just trying to be there for you. The former assassin was still learning how to be someone’s friend and she often came off harsher than she meant to.
Forgoing a worded answer, Karen nods enthusiastically and you know you’re stuck. You knew that if you wanted to continue having a friendship with Bucky he would eventually have to meet your friends but, you weren’t sure if you were ready for that.
It wasn’t in Elektra’s nature to give you a choice though and you mentally resign yourself to it as you pull on your own coat and finish the muffin you had gotten for breakfast. The brunette smirks at you, knowing she’s won and Karen claps her hands giddily.
This wasn’t how you were expecting your day to go. You were hoping that you could go out to breakfast with your friends, go home, get your door fixed, and spend the rest of the day hanging out with Laysa and Bucky before collapsing back into bed so you weren’t dead on your feet tomorrow at work.
It would be your first day back since taking in the snow leopard cub and you had been counting down the days, now even more so.
Karen opens the door and you three make your exit onto the busy sidewalk. A cool breeze has you pulling your jacket tighter and you inhale the smell of the incoming fall season. The first day of October was quickly approaching and you hoped the changing of the seasons would help you adjust to the changes in your life.
“Let me just call Bucky to let him know that you guys are coming.” You voice when the thought pops into your mind that he might not want to meet your friends. He seemed okay with your brother but, that had been a whirlwind encounter that caught you both off guard. “I don’t want to spring this on him.”
Elektra purses her lips but shrugs instead of arguing.
When you look down at your phone, you’re shocked to see it already ringing with Bucky’s name being displayed on the screen. Once again a smile creeps onto your face at the sight as you press the answer button and bring the phone to your ear.
“Hey! I was just about to call. Is everything okay?” You chirp, signaling the girls to follow you as you begin the trek back to your house.
There’s a rumble on the other line and faint arguing that piques your curiosity and you’re trying to discern what’s being said when Bucky finally answers.
“Hey Doll.” He sounds out of breath and you have to wonder what has a super soldier like him breathing hard. “Everything’s fine. It’s just-“
“Y/N we wanna come over!” A voice that could only be Sam Wilson yells from the background, causing you to shake your head with a grin.
You hear James grumble something unintelligible before letting out a long sigh. “They want to meet you.”
“They being Sam and Steve?” You guess whilst biting your thumb, trying to hold back the peal of laughter that threatens to escape.
“Yes ma’am.” A much calmer voice comes through and you vaguely recognize it as Steve Rogers from yesterday’s call. His politeness is every bit what you would expect from America’s sweetheart.
“You’re free to say no.” Barnes cuts in. “Please say no.”
He was obviously in the same boat as you but, you weren’t throwing him a life vest anytime soon. If you go down. So does he.
“You can come on two conditions.” You hum and he groans. “One is that Steve never calls me ma’am again and two is whether or not you’re okay with meeting two of my friends that so rudely invited themselves.”
Karen sticks her tongue out at you childishly. When she does stuff like that it’s hard for you to picture her as the woman who stood up to Frank. The woman who shot an unarmed man all those years ago.
The thought suddenly strikes you that you and Foggy were the only people in your friend group that hasn’t committed murder.
You feel as though that should disturb you more than it actually does.
“Sam’s already on his bike.” Bucky’s deep chuckle snaps you out of your thoughts.
You bid him goodbye and find yourself walking with a bit more of a pep in your step. You didn’t want to think about why talking with the super soldier managed to dissipate your sour mood. You just accept it for what it was and continue walking.
“Was that a yes?” Karen coaxes whilst she loops her arm into yours, grabbing Elle as well.
Her excitement is palpable and you find yourself nodding. “You two are going to be meeting the ex-Winter Soldier, Captain America, and the Falcon.”
“Who wants to take bets on whether or not I get arrested?” Elle says it as a joke but, it opens a very real pit of anxiety in your stomach. Elektra had always been off most mainstream radars but, it was entirely possible that the Avengers know who she is.
Your blossoming mortification must show on your face because Karen swiftly elbows the brunette with a frown. “Why would you say that? No one’s getting arrested. Besides, its not as if you’re aren’t dating the best lawyer in New York City.”
Her words do little to quell the swelling storm in your gut but, you appreciate them nonetheless. Regardless, its too late to turn back when your home creeps into view, just in time for a trio of motorcycles to park in front of it.
None of the men are wearing helmets and you make a mental note to berate them later.
“That them?” Elle asks, feigning disinterest. She can pretend to not be apprehensive all she wants but, you can always tell when she’s lying. This is one of those times.
Meanwhile Karen is bouncing on the balls of her feet as if she wasn’t personally acquainted with several super humans, mutants, heroes, and villains.
Hearing your approach, Bucky turns to face you flashing an uneasy smile before opening his arms.
“Oh he’s hot as-“ You purposefully ignore the rest of Elektra’s sentence in favor of letting yourself be enveloped in James’ hug.
“Hey sweetheart. Sorry ‘bout this.” His voice is low in your ear and you have to fight the shiver that tries to run down your spine at the sound of it.
“Don’t you start apologizing.” You huff before reluctantly pulling away. “My girls are going to eat them alive.”
You wave over Karen and Elle brushing off their stunned stares as Bucky does the same.
“Bucky. This is Karen and Elle. Girls. This is Bucky.” While Elle hesitates to wave, Karen is grinning wide enough that it had you wondering if her cheeks hurt.
“Nice to meet you. I’m sorry it had to be under these conditions.” Elektra steps up when Karen blanks, shaking Bucky’s hand and nodding to the men behind him.
Captain America and the Falcon introduce themselves when James refuses to. Sam flashes you a mega watt smile that has you hiding a laugh behind a hand. Steve forgoes your offered hand and follows James’ suit, pulling you into a tight hug.
Steve’s mouth opens to say something but, is quickly cut off by Sam asking a question that makes your blood run cold.
“Hey, have we met before?” You don’t have to turn around to know he’s talking to Elle and you stiffen in Steve’s hold.
Peeling yourself away from the blond super soldier, you take your place next to Bucky and elbow him in his side.
Elektra shakes her head with a shrug. “I just have one of those faces-“
“Hey! Why don’t we head inside? I’ve gotta feed Laysa. You know how cranky she gets.” You cut in as you drag the brunet around your home and into the backyard. The back door was the only way in since Bucky nailed a few two by fours over the front door to keep it in place until he came back to fix it.
If Barnes notices your panic, he says nothing.
The back door unlocks with a click and you can hear Laysa as soon as the door opens. A smile creeps its way onto your face at the sound of mewling and, when you turn to face James, he’s wearing a matching grin.
You ask him to get her from the nursery while you get the bottle ready and he nods, motioning for the guys to follow him into your home.
“Smooth Kare.” Elle jokes when the blonde trips over the doorstep; obviously too entrance by the Falcon’s ass to pay attention to where she was walking.
“Shut up.” She hisses. “Can you blame me? I’ve never seen a group of men that good looking.”
“Karen.” You hum. “Super soldiers equal super hearing.”
Her face goes bright red and you do nothing stop the peal of laughter escaping your throat. It was a much-needed reprieve from the tension that had been tightening your muscles since stepping out of the coffee shop.
“Like Matt super hearing?” He worries, biting her lip and dutifully avoiding the office door as we pass by it.
That was a good question but, it wasn’t one you wanted the answer to anytime soon. For now you were walking the fine line of knowing heroes and vigilantes with no overlap. You wanted to keep a grasp on it for as long as you could. When lines blur, things get messy, and you had enough mess in your life as is.
“Who knows?” Elle sighs before taking a seat on your counter as you begin the process of heating up Laysa’s bottle. She seemed a bit too relaxed for a criminal who had almost been recognized and you absentmindedly wonder how long she could keep the act up. Elektra was the epitome of a strong woman but, everyone needed a place to crash. Matt was her place. Lord knows they earned each other.
The microwave beeping mixed with Karen’s hand waving in front of your face brings you back to reality.
“You okay?” She mouths as James and the others make their way into the kitchen. You wave off the question before taking the cub from James’ arms.
“That may be the coolest thing I’ve seen.” Sam grins and James rolls his eyes. “And I’ve seen a lot of cool things.”
“You do that often?” Steve’s eyes widen in fascination as Laysa eagerly latches onto the bottle. “Take in animals like that?”
“Y/N’s always looking to take work home. Before her it was the Macaws and before the Macaws it was-“ Elle trails off, snapping her fingers in frustration.
“Oh it was the Gharial baby with the nub leg.” Karen supplies while cooing over the cub. “Remember it bit Foggy and he had to get like five stitches? How’s he doing now?”
You remembered that night very well. More accurately, you remember Matt laughing his ass off when Foggy fainted at the sight of his own blood.
You loved that little reptile.
“He’s doing great now. Swims better than the rest of the clutch.” You reply, laughing when you hear Sam (not so quietly) asking Steve and Bucky if they knew what a Gharial was.
You choose to save the herpetology lesson for another time.
“Do you guys want anything to drink?” Elle asks, taking on the role of hostess while you’re indisposed and you shake your head before silently thanking her.
“I’m good, thanks. We better get started on the door.” James declines, petting the cub in your arm once more then walking out of the kitchen, toolbox in hand.
“You have fun with that Bonky. I’ll stay with the kitten.” You snort at the nickname Sam throws out and you file it into the back of your mind for later. “And Steve can’t figure out how the drill works so-“
The Captain flushes with a frown before grabbing the Falcon by the back of his collar and dragging him into the room Bucky had disappeared, leaving you alone with Elle and Karen.
Both of which were eyeing you with matching grins.
“No.” You deadpan. “Don’t even think-“
“So Bucky seems nice.” Karen voices. “Helpful too.”
“And hot.” Elle adds.
You groan.
Across the house, Bucky was diligently ignoring the probing stares of Steve and Sam wile removing the planks on the front door.
“So. How did the door break again?” Steve questions for the hundredth time since finding out about it last night. His best friend had been tight lipped about the aftermath of yesterday and, after seeing how Bucky was with you, he could understand why.
“Hand me the hammer.” He grunts while gently yanking the first piece of wood off the frame. James wasn’t sure if you’d be okay with the others knowing who your brother was so, he chose silence, much to the Falcon’s irritation.
“Doubt the ex kicked it down.” The aforementioned bird continues. “Man barely looked like he could lift a chair let alone break down a solid door.”
Bucky wants to comment that you ex wasn’t a man as much as he was a rat as you so eloquently put it yesterday. He takes the hammer from his friend’s hand and uses it to pry another set of nails out. The ex- Winter Soldier refused to leave you in a house with no front door and, after a silent staring contest that lasted all of three minutes, you caved, showing him to your basement filled with half finished projects. Apparently, you were quite the handy person yourself but never finished anything due to lack of free time.
Luckily for him, you had been meaning to replace the doorframe for some time and you already had all of the parts and pieces he needed.
“The world may never know.” Bucky grumbles with a roll of his eyes, effectively putting an end to the door questions. He had been looking forward to another quiet day, away from the pitying eyes of his team and, if he were being honest with himself, seeing you again. He didn’t have to pretend to be okay around you and you didn’t push him to talk about things he wasn’t ready to say out loud.
Laysa wasn’t a bad incentive either.
Your house had quickly become a safe place for him. Something you made sure he knew when you both said your goodbyes last night.
Steve’s phone goes off and the Captain wastes no time in opening the new text message. “Claire’s filed for a transfer. Nat just got the request.”
For a split second, Bucky pauses. For some reason, he had thought that his ex-wife would have put up a bit more of a fight for him. A part of him wished she would have put her foot down, said no to the divorce and demanded they work things out.
He would have said no but, knowing that she had given their relationship up so quickly stung. Steve and Natasha knew that he still had love for Claire and were hesitant to bring her up, while the others kept telling him how glad they were that she was gone.
Suddenly the image of you landing a punch to Claire’s cheek pushes the thought from his mind and he regains control over his body.
“Wait. Nat got the request?” Sam questions. “Isn’t that a Maria thing?”
The bird-man had a good point. Claire was a SHIELD agent and that was Maria Hill’s turf.
“As if that was going to stop her.” Steve chuckles. “Romanoff doesn’t concern herself with minor legalities.”
James couldn’t complain. This was Natalia’s way of showing she cared and he appreciated it more than she knew. He was sure hell would freeze over before Claire stepped foot in the Avengers’ Compound again.
The Captain pockets his phone once more and watches his best friend work. The way Bucky’s whole body relaxed when he saw you outside hadn’t escaped his watchful eye. Even if he had managed to miss that, the way he had opened his arms to you without a second thought sure as hell would have caught the blond’s attention.
Bucky had gotten better with people touching him but, he still avoided it as much as he could. His best friend hadn’t gone out of his way to hug someone since before the war. Steve wasn’t oblivious, he could see the hurt that lingered in the ex- Winter Soldier’s eyes and he’d seen it mirrored in your own. The moment you walked yourself into Bucky’s arms the Captain knew that there was something between the two of you; a mutual understanding of one another’s pain.
No doubt Sam was going to tease him about it later but, Steve was happy. He couldn’t pretend to know what his best friend was going through right now. He was just glad that he had you to go through it with.
Minutes pass in blissful silence and Bucky has to restrain himself from strangling Sam when he breaks it with a corny joke.
“You guys should go to the zoo. I heard they offer senior discounts.”
While Steve frowns, a grin crawls onto Bucky’s face. He stays silent for a moment as he relishes what he’s about to say next.
“You’re a little late to that train. Already made that joke yesterday.” You take the words out of James’ mouth when you enter the room with Laysa clumsily trailing behind you.
“Oh that’s cold.” The Falcon grumbles and the sheer disappointment on his face brings a chuckle out of Bucky’s chest. He turns to find you smirking at the air force veteran while rolling your eyes.
Elle passes you and grabs a remote off of the coffee table. Sam’s words from earlier come to the forefront of Bucky’s mind. Your friend does seem eerily familiar but, he just couldn’t put his finger on why. Her standoffishness reminds him of Natalia in a way but, other than that, she seemed like a completely normal woman.
After hitting a few buttons music pours out of the television, filling the silence with a low tune.
Sam, ever the conversationalist, decides to break the awkward tension. “So, do you guys work with Y/N?”
Karen shakes her head. “Oh god no. That’s too much school for me. I’m a journalist and I work at our friend’s law firm as an assistant part time. Never a dull moment there.” She finishes sarcastically and, as normal people do, Sam and Steve look towards Elektra next.
Your breath catches in your throat when she clears her throat. “I’m a personal trainer. Moved here from Greece a few years back to live with my boyfriend.”
Her answer is surprisingly normal and you applaud her for adding the personal touch.
“She’s actually dating one of my best friends, Matt. He was one of the lawyers that got our papers together.” You fill in a couple blanks to make the story more believable. “And we of course know what you guys do for a living. Saving the world must be a dangerous way to get paid.”
Out of the corner of your eye, you see Karen and Elle struggle to keep a straight face. They were no stranger to danger (Elektra being the danger most of the time) and you all knew it.
“Someone’s gotta do it.” Sam boasts with a puffed out chest.
Steve is more subtle. “We try our best to keep people safe.”
Conversation flows steadily from that point on with Sam and Karen picking up the slack from Elle and Bucky. An hour passes in what feels like seconds and you’re fearing that Karen has finally met her match when Bucky and Steve shoot to a standing position.
Its an odd sense of déjà vu when James backs away from the door to stand in front of you just as it’s kicked in once more.
There’s no cloud of dust this time and you can clearly see the form of your brother rushing in with a hand on his weapon.
“Y/N! Are you okay? I saw-“ He trails off when he sees the three men in the living room.
“Are you kidding me?!” You yell, pushing James aside then stomping your way to your brother. “Again Frankie?! Again?!”
Despite your anger, you’re relieved to see that he’s not covered head to toe in blood but, that doesn’t stop you from smacking him upside his head. “What part of you have a key don’t you get? Stop kicking down my damn door!”
Frank’s posture relaxes immediately and he shrugs sheepishly. “I saw the bikes and I thought-“
“Thought what?! That I was being murdered at noon on a Monday?” As soon as the words leave your mouth you wish you can take them back. You remember how bright the sun was shining the day your brother lost his entire family. “I’m sorry. I know you’re just looking out for me because you’re a great big brother and I love you for it. Can you just do that without busting down my poor door?”
Sam lets out a quiet what the hell at your admission. His shock warms your heart- not because your brother’s reputation proceeds himself but, because Sam’s surprise tells you that Bucky hadn’t told the Avengers about Frank. A secret that was now moot.
“Nat’s gonna freak when she finds out.” Sam chuckles behind you and, once again, déjà vu creeps up your spine.
Déjà vu that turns into a shiver when a low and feminine voice cuts through the air. “Nat already knows and she came down here to make sure you three don’t get turned into pink mist and a memory. Looks like there was no need.”
You can see a speck of red hair from behind your brother’s hulking frame. This whole situation was getting more ridiculous by the moment and you revert to your wish for a quiet day.
You could handle one Avenger. Tolerate three. But add another, your brother, Elektra, and Karen to the mix? It was too much.
“Hey danger.” She adds, bumping your brother’s shoulder with a wink. You had to hand it to the woman. She knows what she wants and she goes for it. Her blatant flirting obviously catches Frank off guard and all he can manage is a furrowed brown and wide eyes. “You don’t seem too shocked by this Barnes.”
“Not my story Natalia.” His response is simple and to the point but it still brings a smile to your face.
Shaking off your surprise, you then grab your brother by his arm and wave Natasha into your home.
“I guess that answers our door question, Cap.” Sam chuckles.
The aforementioned Captain stares at you with wide blue eyes. You’d think for a century old man he’d have seen it all but, watching you manhandle the most gruesome vigilante in New York (ex-vigilante he reminds himself) wasn’t something he was prepared for. Steve know understood what Bucky meant when he said you were something.
“Kare- check him. Make sure he isn’t hiding any stab wounds or bullet holes from me.”
The petit blonde takes his hand with a smile before leading him away from the group. You didn’t put it past your brother to have just shoved gauze into an open wound and call it a day.
You unconsciously gravitate back to James and you don’t realize it until he lays a hand on your shoulder.
“At least I was just measuring when he kicked it down. I can have it fixed in no time.” His reassuring smile coupled with Laysa now rubbing against your leg calms your frazzled nerves. Your house hasn’t been this lively in years and, although you know you should embrace it, you were tired.
“Tweedle dee and tweedle dum. Castle isn’t the only reason I came here. We have a mission.” The redhead points to the Captain and Falcon. Both men stand at attention and you have the gnawing feeling that although Steve was the captain, Natasha was the leader. “Nice meeting you Y/N.”
You watch with a raised brow as she crosses the empty threshold once more before answering with a weak you too.
She pauses and looks up at the cracked door frame with a frown. “Barnes you’re in this one too but, finish this up first.” Steve and Same both bid their goodbyes before following the woman out. You don’t let out the breath you’ve been holding until you hear three motorcycle start up and disappear down the street.
Karen comes back out- frowning at the now empty room before she shakes her head. “He’s clean but it doesn’t look like he’s slept in days.”
You scoop Laysa up with a frown. He was having his nightmares again and it had you worried. Guilt creeps into your veins when the thought crosses your mind. Patrick hurting you might have dredged up the past for Frank which explains why he rushed in earlier.
“I’ll take him hom-“
“No. I’ll take him. You have enough on your plate right now he won’t talk to you. You know that.” Karen bites her thumb after cutting you off. You could never piece together the nature of the bond she and your brother shared but, you’re happy that it’s there nonetheless. She was right, Frank would rather die than add his own problems to your full plate.
“Thank you.” You nod solemnly and she disappears from sight. Moments later you hear the back door close and you sigh.
“That’s my cue. Matt and I have plans for tonight and I’ve gotta get ready. You know- limber up.” Elektra stands with a cat-like grin. Her words have James coughing in shock and you snort. You almost want to tell Bucky the truth but you knew telling an Avenger that your blind best friend and his girlfriend were planning on canvasing the city to fight bad guys wasn’t the best plan, so you leave him to his embarrassment then give the woman a hug.
“I’ll talk to you both later. Be careful.” Out of the corner of your eye you see a blush burn onto Barnes’ face. Maybe it was cruel to tease him like this but, no one said that cruel couldn’t be funny.
She disappears in a flash of black hair, leaving you and Bucky blissfully alone.
“That was something.” You groan before plopping onto the couch. Of the several scenarios you had run through your head of meeting Bucky’s friends- the one that just transpired wasn’t one of them.
“It could’ve been worse.” He shrugs, picking up the forgotten door in an amazing display of muscle that has your eyes lingering on his back. “I think your brother and Natalia showing up added a bit of spice.”
You slam a pillow over your face hoping that it would somehow erase the memory of the last twenty minutes from your mind. “Weren’t you born in the twenties or something? Didn’t think you could handle spice.”
The playful jab has him shaking his head with a smile.
“I’ll have you know that I’ve eaten Carolina Reaper wings before. I can handle spice just fine.”
The pillow over your face muffles the snort that leaves your throat at his defense. The mention of the infamous pepper brings up an old memory from college.
“I almost killed Foggy with Reaper wings. He didn’t know what they were and, after eating one, he rushed for anything to stop the burn. He ended up grabbing a brownie laced with Black Scorpion pepper. Immediately started throwing up.” You find the strength to remove the pillow from your head with a bright laugh. “He had to chug half a gallon of milk to stop.”
Those had been easier times. Back when the three of you had the whole world ahead of you.
“Who laces brownies with pepper?” The man across the room frowns. “That’s just wrong.”
“Hey! It was a Halloween party. Trick or Treat.”
“Remind me to never come to one of your parties then.”
You gasp in indignation ready to fire back with I’ll have you know that I used to throw great parties before you think better of it. You stopped throwing parties years ago because Patrick never hid how much he disliked parties and your friends in general.
The thought of your ex-husband douses you in cold water causing a shiver to run down your spine. Instead of answering, you run your fingers through Laysa’s soft fur to calm yourself down. Glancing at James across the room, it appears as though he lost in thought as well. The clock on the wall strikes one in the afternoon.
It has officially been twenty-four hours since you both confronted your spouses. It was a thought that was both liberating and terrifying.
“We’re going to be okay. Right?” The words escape you before you can bottle them back up and, when Bucky freezes, you wish you could take them back.
“Yeah. We’re going to be better than okay Doll. Maybe not today but, eventually.” His deep voice wavers slightly causing you to worry your lip between your teeth. You had the feeling he wasn’t normally this open with his friends and an odd mix of feelings swirl in your chest; relief, a little bit of pride, and another that you couldn’t quite put your finger on.
Regardless it’s that feeling you can’t put a finger on that has you standing up. “Natasha said you have a mission?”
“Yeah. S’gonna be a rough one if all of us have been called in.” This time there is no waver of worry in his voice. He’s firm and matter of fact in a way the reminds you of your brother and Matt. That didn’t make you fear for his safety any less.
You decide to follow the same routine as you do with your friends who like to put themselves in dangerous situations on a regular basis.
“Do you have time for a home cooked meal before you go?”
Once again the man pauses but, this time he turns to you slowly as a smile grows on his handsome face.
“Yeah sweetheart. I’d like that.

New pt. 1|| peter parker/spider-man
Tumblr media
a/n-This is my first full story! This takes place during Civil War. I did change things up so don't come at me if everything is correct, because not everything is.
summary-y/n is new, but not that new to the team. she has powers like wanda, but they are grey. not a lot of people like her on the team because they think that she is doesn't really speak up and there is already someone on the team with similar powers. she is on steve's side in Civil War. she meets someone new before the fight, spider-man.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I joined the Avengers about two-two in a half years ago when I was 16. I'm now 18. I didn't really seem to fit in because there was already someone on the team with my same powers. And to be honest I don't like talking to people.
It was about halfway through the day when we were all called down for a meeting.
When I got down there everyone was sitting down already.
'Always late y/n. Always'
"Sorry, I'm late." I whispered before sitting down.
Apparently the Secretary of State was here. Why would he be here you ask? I have no clue. One way to find out.
"I just have one question. Why are you here?" I speak up.
"Good question. I was just getting to that." He said back to me, but mainly to everyone else.
"The world owes the Avengers an unpayable debt. You have fought for us, protected us, risked your lives, but while a great many people see you as heroes, there are some...that prefer the word 'vigilantes'" He spoke.
"What word would you use, Mr. Secretary?" Natasha asked him.
"How about 'dangerous'?" He said sternly.
"I'm sorry, but weren't we the ones who save countless lives?" I spoke up.
"y/n don't." Steve argued.
"No. I'm sorry, but how many people have you saved Mr. Secretary? Hmm?" I was starting to get pissed off. I get pissed of easily now a days.
"..."
"None. That's right. At least we save people and not make people feel fucking bad about themselves." I was about to blow up. And the others could tell because my eyes were turning grey.
"y/n please clam down." Wanda tried calming me down. It worked a little bit, but I was still in rage. I sat back down and finished listening to what he had to say.
"What would you call a group of US-based, enhances individuals, who routinely ignore sovereign borders, and inflict their will wherever they choose, and who, frankly, seem unconcerned about what they leave behind?" He spoke. When he spoke it sounded like venom. It was fucking disgusting.
'Those people are called fucking heroes'
He started showing the fights that the Avengers fought in.
"New York...Washington, D.C....Sokovia...Lagos..." He said all those places.
"I'm sorry, but if I do recall, we saved countless of lives. No matter the damage, we still saved people. And if I'm not mistaken people can rebuild the buildings, but not the people who died." I spoke up.
"I'm sorry, but you saved people after putting them in danger." Mr. Secretary said back. Oh how much I would like to make him have another heart attack and let him die right here.
"That's enough." Steve told Mr. Secretary.
"For the past four years, you've operated with unlimited power and no supervision. That's an arrangement the governments of the world can no longer tolerate." He went on to say.
'What?'
"But I think we have a solution." His assistant or something handed him a big book and handed it to me. "The Sokovia Accords."
'The what?'
"Approved by 117 countries it states that the Avengers shall no longer be a private organization. Instead...they'll operate under the supervision of a United Nations panel only when and if that panel deems it necessary." He explained.
"The Avengers were formed to make the world a safer place. I feel we've done that." Steve argued.
"Tell me, Captain, do you know where Thor and Banner are right now?" Mr. Secretary argued back. "If I misplace a couple of 30 megaton nukes you can bet there'd be consequences....Compromise. Reassurance. That's how the world works."
"And if the world was falling apart we would be there helping it out. Saving it, if I'm not mistaken. And now you want to put us on a leash and control us?" I bit back.
"Well, three days from now the UN meets in Vienna to ratify the Accords. Talk it over." He spoke before he started walking out.
I caught him before he walked out and said, "And if we come to a decision you don't like?"
He stopped, looked back, and said, "Then you retire."
I just looked at him with a smile and argued, "We'll see."
And with that he left.
About 5-10 minutes later we are all in the lounge room talking about it. Well, Sam and Rhodey are arguing about it.
"Secretary Ross has a Congressional Medal of Honor...Which is one more than you have." Rhodey clearly stated.
"So let's say we agree to this thing. How long is it gonna be before they LoJack us like a bunch of common criminals?" Sam looked annoyed.
"117 countries want to sign this. 117, Sam, and you're just like, 'No, that's cool. We got it.'"
"How long are you going to play both sides?"
Vision and Steve are now talking.
"Are you saying it's our fault?" Steve asks.
"I'm saying there may be causality. Our very strength invites challenge. Challenge incites conflict. And conflict...breeds catastrophe. Oversight...Oversight is not an idea that can be dismissed out of hand." Vision stated.
"Boom." Rhodey said to Sam.
Everyone kept talking then Steve had to go.
Nat looked at me and asked, "What about you y/n? You are now old enough to sign things, and this is a major thing to sign."
"Oh, you want my opinion now? Fine I'll give it to you!" I begin to say.
I then clear my throat and begin to say, "Fuck those Accords! We fucking fought for this country. I fucking fought for this country. Hell. We all fought for this world. And now we have to be babysat? No, I will not let that happen. Isn't this country about free will? I will not just sit around while countries are falling apart! I can't see people die if we can help them! I will help them no matter what. And if there are consequences, then let there be consequences! I don't give a fuck!" Wow, I just surprised myself!
"You really feel that way y/n?" Rhodey asked.
"Yes! And you guys should too! You guys have been fighting with no hands behind your back! And now you want both hands tied behind your back?" It was true. If they signed they would be held back.
I just wanted to vent out. So I stood up and went into the training room.
After a while of training I hear someone coming in. I see a knife and i put it in front of them. Then I see someone I've never seen here before.
"Way to invite your new guest." He says. His voice sounds calming.
"I'm sorry, you just scared me." I said as I dropped the knife.
"Yeah, well I just heard someone in here and Mr. Stark told me to look around." He stated.
"Tony sent you in here?" I asked.
"No? I am new. He recruited me for the fight."
"What fight?"
"Apparently something like Captain America going off and everything about the Avengers future?"
"Right that."
"What do you mean that?"
"The Accords. It is basically saying that the Avengers have to be babysat by the government and 117 countries."
"Oh, well I'm not quite old enough to sign anything so Mr. Stark is putting my name in it for me."
"How old are you?"
"Almost 18."
"What's your name and power? I guess."
"I'm Peter and I'm Spider-man."
"I'm y/n. And who?"
"You don't know who Spider-man is?"
"No?'
"Basically I shoot webs and I have super strength, and I'm sticky."
"Oh. Well, thanks for stopping by. I guess. See you around."
"Yeah, see you."
I caught him before he left, "Wait!"
"Yeah?"
"Where is this 'fight' happening."
"Germany. The airport."
"Awesome."
"Are you coming."
"No. I think it is best to stay here." That was a lie. I needed to go. I needed to see what was going on.
"Ok, well I hope to see you around sometime."
"Yeah, me too" I said as he left.
When he left I immediately got my suit on and took a jet over to Germany. It was a long flight, but I got there, and just in enough time too. I caught Steve, Sam, Wanda, Clint, and two other people.
"y/n! What are you doing here?" Steve asks.
"Could ask you the same thing?" I asked back.
Steve looked at the guy standing in front of him and he said, "They tell you what we're up against?"
"Something about some psycho-assassins?" The guy said.
"I-I'm sorry. Psycho assassins?" Who?
Steve looked at me and was talking to the guy too I guess, but he said, "We're outside the law on this one. So if you come with us you are going to be targeted."
"What do you mean?" I asked Steve, but he didn't answer.
"We got a chopper lined up." Clint said.
"Steve what's happening. I want to help." I tell him.
"Fine, but you are going to have even more of a target on your back." He sternly told me.
"What is there for me to loose?" I question him, but mainly myself.
"They're evacuating the airport." The other guy says.
"Stark." Sam tells Steve.
"Tony?" I ask.
"Suit up." Steve tells the group.
Body Shot
Warnings: Smut
Summary: Drinking games are never a good idea after a mission...Or are they?
           “Whose brilliant idea was it to get drunk after a mission, anyway?” I groaned. I had just downed my fourth tequila shot of the night and was now trying desperately to get the taste out of my mouth with a beer. Sam laughed.
           “It was your idea, genius,” he replied. “You’re the one that was like ‘We should all get drunk tonight’ as soon as we stepped off the quinjet.”
           I groaned again and rolled my eyes. “Sober me is a real dick.”
           “Oh c’mon, (Y/N),” Nat teased. “We’re having fun! It’s not our fault you’re terrible at drinking games.”
           I glared at her, but it was true. I don’t know how it happened, but it seemed every game we played I lost, to the point where I was the most drunk out of all of us. Most of them I could understand – Steve and Bucky were supersoldiers, it would take a lethal amount of alcohol to get them drunk. Nat had a very high tolerance, as most Russians did. Sam and Wanda could handle about the same amount that I could, but yet they weren’t anywhere near as drunk as I was.
           “It’s not fair,” I grumbled. “These games are all rigged. I think you should let me pick the game.”
           Steve snorted. “You know very well these games aren’t rigged, (Y/N),” he said, “but if it makes you feel any better then alright, you can choose the next game.”
           I grinned wickedly. This was my time to shine.
           “Beer pong,” I stated. “That’s my choice. Somebody help me set it up.”
           “I’m down for beer pong,” Sam said, and Wanda nodded.
           “Me, too.”
           “How are you going to play beer pong, (Y/N)?” Nat teased. “You’re so drunk you likely can’t even stand up, let alone throw a ping pong ball into a cup.”
           Always a competitor, I glared at her. “I’ll have you know I won a championship in university for beer pong,” I said indignantly. “I’m a pro. You had all better be scared.”
           Wanda laughed, and Sam shook his head. “They’ll let anyone be an Avenger now, won’t they?” he said, and I reached over to elbow him in the gut.
           “Where did Bucky go, anyway?” Natasha asked. “Is it getting past the old man’s bedtime? Are we young ‘uns too much for him to handle?”
           “He went to put more beer in the fridge for you alcoholics,” Steve chuckled, “and I asked him to bring back some food for our drunker companions.”
           His eyes shot over to me, and my own eyes narrowed. “I’m not that drunk!” I argued. “Look, I’ll prove it.”
           I pushed myself up off the couch, and immediately regretted it. I hadn’t stood in awhile and all the blood rushed to my head, making me dizzy. I gave myself a couple of seconds to balance myself and then took a few steps forward.
           “See?” I said. “I’m completely fine.” As if to prove my point, I tried to do a twirl. However, I overestimated my ability to balance and stumbled, tripping over my own feet. Before I could fall, though, a strong arm was hooked around my waist to steady me.
           “Careful, doll,” Bucky murmured, and I felt my cheeks grow red. I straightened up and pulled away, mumbling an embarrassed “Thank you,” to him; I could hear Nat and Wanda snickering to my left and I shot them a dirty look before flopping back down onto the couch between them.
           “I think Steve meant for those nachos to be for (Y/N), Bucky,” Wanda said pointedly, and my blush deepened. Bucky turned to me with a small smile.
           “They’re fresh,” he said. “Eat up – You’ll feel better.”
           “Thanks,” I mumbled, completely mortified at this point. Bucky nodded and then turned to hand Steve the beer he’d brought him before cracking open his own and returning to his seat in the armchair.
           “So what are we gonna play, then?” Wanda asked. “Beer pong is out, and (Y/N) needs a break from taking shots, but I’m not ready to go to bed yet.”
           The rest of the group nodded their collective agreements, and Nat grinned wickedly. I knew that grin. It could only mean trouble.
           “Well why don’t we play truth or dare, then?” she suggested, waggling her eyebrows. “It’s fun, and the only reason you’d have to take a shot is if you refuse to answer the question or do the dare given to you.”
           Sam nodded eagerly. “I’m in,” he exclaimed. “I’m a pro at the dares.”
           “Me too,” Wanda agreed with a grin. Steve nodded too.
           “Sure, why not. I’ve got nothing to hide.”
           Bucky and I were the only two that hadn’t said anything. Bucky tended to keep to himself most of the time and was a very private person, so I was surprised when he finally nodded as well.
           “Could be fun,” he murmured, and Nat grinned.
           “Perfect,” she breathed. “(Y/N), how about you?”
           I wanted to say no. Nat was way too excited about this for it to just be an innocent game of truth or dare, and she knew too many of my weaknesses for it to be safe for me. Five pairs of eyes were looking at me expectantly, though, and finally I sighed.
           “Fine,” I said, and the triumphant look on her face made me wary.
           “So who goes first?” Steve asked.
           “You’re up, old man,” Sam said to him with a smirk. “Truth or dare?”
           Steve narrowed his eyes. “I don’t trust your dares,” he said, “so truth.”
           “Has a girl ever asked you to wear the Captain America outfit in bed?”
           Steve’s cheeks were pink, but he nodded. “Yes, once,” he admitted, and the room erupted into hoots of laughter.
           “Did you do it?” Nat asked, but Wanda shook her head.
           “Go easy on him. One question only,” she chuckled, and then she turned to Sam. “Truth or dare, Sam?”
           “Dare, obviously,” he said, as if offended that she’d even had to ask.
           “I dare you to replace Clint’s Cocoa Puffs with dog food,” she said, and the room all looked at her with wide eyes.
           “He’ll kill everyone when he finds out!” I breathed. “Clint lives off those things.”
           Wanda shrugged. “He ate the last cinnamon bun the other day. This is payback.”
           Sam, not being one to ever back down from a dare, dumped the cereal down the garbage disposal and refilled the box with the kibble that Peter had for the dog Tony had let him keep after he’d claimed it had “followed him home” one day. Sam came back to the common room with a mischievous grin on his face.
           “Done,” he said. “Your turn, Natasha. Truth or dare?”
           “Dare,” Nat replied boldly, one red eyebrow cocked as if challenging him to do his worst.
           “I dare you to hack into the compound’s database and change ‘Tony Stark’ to ‘Tony Stank’ so that’s what comes up on every last piece of paperwork and in every file.”
           I laughed. “Do it,” I urged. “Rhodey will lose it when he sees it.”
           Smirking, Nat pulled her laptop out from under the coffee table. For a few minutes she stared at the screen with her brows knitted together as she typed furiously, and then she looked up triumphantly. “Done,” she told us. “I even reprogrammed F.R.I.D.A.Y. to call him Mr. Stank.”
           “I love you,” Wanda breathed as we all tried to catch our breaths from laughing. Nat grinned.
           “Okay, my turn,” she giggled, and when her eyes met mine I froze. She opened her mouth to speak, but then turned instead to Bucky. “Truth or dare, Buck? You’re a little too quiet over there.”
           Bucky hesitated before he finally said, “Truth,” and even then he sounded unsure of himself.
           “Are you a guy that appreciates tits or an ass more?” Nat asked, and Steve nearly choked on his drink. Sam grinned from ear to ear, and I expected Bucky to look uncomfortable but he scrunched his nose before finally saying, “Definitely the latter.”
           “Smart man,” Sam said, and Bucky grinned ruefully before turning to Wanda.
           “Truth or dare, Wanda?”
           “Truth,” she replied.
           “Do you ever use your powers to get your own way?”
           Wanda had the decency to at least pretend to look offended, but the sparkle in her eyes gave away the truth before she even said anything. “Maybe…” she admitted, dragging out the word. “But in my defense, the woman at the DMV was a bitch.”
           “You used your powers to get your license?” I cried in disbelief. Steve shot her a stern look.
           “We’ll talk about this tomorrow,” he said, and Wanda rolled her eyes.
           “Oh, lighten up, Steve. Truth or dare?”
           “Dare.”
           “I dare you to drink some of Thor’s Asgardian liquor.”
           Steve shook his head. “That’s Thor’s, I can’t just take it –”
           “If he were here he’d insist you drink it,” Sam argued. “Besides, it’s the only thing that’ll get you and Frosty over there drunk. It’s about time you stop drinking beers like they’re water.”
           Bucky scowled at the nickname Sam so often liked to call him, but Steve sighed. “Fine, I’ll have one drink,” he said. “Buck, you want one?”
           “Is it really enough to get us drunk?” Bucky asked, and Nat grinned. She had already retrieved the bottle and poured them each a glass.
           “Find out for yourself.”
           The guys each took a sip. Steve had tried it before so he knew what to expect, but Bucky hadn’t and when it touched his tongue his face scrunched up. We all laughed and he shook his head.
           “It’s so bitter,” he choked, and Steve chuckled.
           “You get used to it. Just take it slow; that one glass is all you’ll need,” he explained before turning to Nat. “Truth or dare, Nat?”
           “Ask me a question, Captain.”
           “Did you sleep with that pizza delivery guy the other night?”
           She grinned wickedly. “Yep. Wasn’t bad, either.”
           “You are incorrigible,” I chuckled quietly, and Nat turned to me.
           “What was that, drunkie?” she asked, and I cursed myself for drawing her attention to me. “You’ve somehow managed to stay out of the spotlight so far, (Y/N); we’ll have to fix that. Truth or dare?”
           I swallowed hard, weighing my options. If I answered with truth then she would most certainly make me reveal something that I didn’t want a certain someone in the room to know. If I chose dare, then god knows what she would make me do. But I couldn’t forfeit either, because I really didn’t think my stomach could handle another shot this early on.
           “Truth,” I finally said begrudgingly, knowing I could at least be creative with my answer if I had to be. She smirked, and I immediately regretted my choice.
           “When was the last time you got laid?”
           I blushed, but it could have been much worse. Glaring at her, I mumbled, “It’s been a year.”
           Of course, Nat had already known this – She was only stirring the pot. Wanda had known as well so she didn’t react. Sam’s eyes widened.
           “A year? Jesus, girl, how are you not more uptight than you are?” he cried. My blush deepened.
           “I’ve been busy, alright? Not all of us are naturally skilled in being a superhero. I have to train twice as much as all of you; it takes up a lot of time.” I frowned. “I answered Nat’s question, now let’s drop it. Sam, truth or dare?”
           “Dare.”
           I thought for a moment. “I dare you to pick a random number from the phone book and try to seduce whoever answers.”
           “It’s one in the morning on a Tuesday,” Steve said. “Who’s gonna pick up the phone?”
           “New York is the city that never sleeps, Steve,” Nat pointed out. “Someone will answer.”
           So Sam did it. He called a number, and an old man answered. We all had to stay quiet because he had it on speakerphone, but when the old man started getting unsettlingly into it and Sam’s face twisted in disgust Bucky snickered and we all burst into laughter. Nat quickly hung up the phone and Sam shook his head.
           “Nasty-ass man, Christ,” he groaned. “I vote we play something else now.”
           “Oh, c’mon, Sam, I thought you were the king of dares,” I taunted. “You said you would do anything.”
           “I draw the line at strange old men wanting to get in my pants.”
           We all chuckled, but Nat shook her head. “I have too many good ideas to stop playing now,” she said, and then she arched an eyebrow at Sam. His brow furrowed, but then his eyes widened as if he had just made a realization and he grinned.
           “Fine, we can keep playing, but it’s my turn to deal out some punishment.” His eyes scanned the room and landed on Bucky. “Frosty!” he exclaimed. “Truth or dare?”
           “How many times have I told you not to call me that?” he grumbled. “Dare, I guess.”
           Sam smirked. “Atta boy. I dare you to do a body shot.”
           “Off of you?” Bucky’s nose wrinkled. “Absolutely not.”
           “Off of (Y/N),” Nat offered, and my eyes widened. I looked at her in horror, but she was looking at Bucky expectantly. He won’t do it, I told myself. It amazed me that he had even put up with us for this long instead of going to bed. Surely this would be where he drew the line.
           “Alright,” he said with a shrug, “as long as (Y/N)’s alright with it.”
           I coughed, and Nat grinned. “Of course she is!”
           “I don’t know…” I started, but Nat was already pouring tequila into a shot glass.
           “Lie flat on the table so it doesn’t spill,” she ordered, and she gave me a look that said if I didn’t cooperate, she would make me. Pursing my lips, I laid down on the table, and she set the shot glass on my belly button after sliding my shirt up some. Then she spread a line of lime juice on my stomach and sprinkled salt over top of it. I wanted to protest – It was way too close to the waistband of my leggings for comfort, but she was already motioning for Bucky to come over.
           “Hands behind your back,” she ordered. “Pick up the shot glass with your mouth and –”
           “I know how to do a body shot,” Bucky said indignantly, and Nat shrugged.
           “Just had to be sure. You never know with you old guys.”
           Bucky shot her a look of annoyance before coming to stand next to me. “You sure you’re alright with this, (Y/N)?” he murmured. My throat was too dry to say anything but I nodded, even though my heart felt like it was going to hammer right out of my chest. Shooting me a shy smile, Bucky clasped his hands behind his back and bent down to wrap his lips around the rim of the shot glass, downing the tequila in one gulp. Nat took the shot glass from him and then he leaned in to lick the salt and juice from my skin.
           His tongue was soft and warm, and as he dragged it across my stomach I could feel goosebumps prickle my skin. I had to bite my tongue to keep from whimpering, and then he was pulling away all too soon. He gave me an embarrassed smile as he straightened, and then offered a hand to help me off the table. I took it, though the dizziness I felt wasn’t from the alcohol in my bloodstream.
           “Steve, you’re up,” Bucky said as he sat back down in the armchair. “Truth or dare.”
           “Dare.”
           “I dare you to tell everyone what happened that night with Mandy White.”
           Steve’s face darkened as he glared at his best friend. “That’s not fair, jerk. We promised we’d never talk about that night again.”
           Bucky had a wicked grin on his face – A look I’d never seen on him before. I wondered if the Bucky that Steve knew from all those years ago was this Bucky now; carefree, light and mischievous.
           “Who’s Mandy White?” Wanda asked, and Bucky cocked an eyebrow.
           “Tell them, Stevie.”
           “She’s a prostitute,” he finally grumbled. “Buck and I were in high school and we snuck into a bar in Brooklyn. This dame – Mandy – took an interest in me right off the bat.” He shook his head in disgust. “That should have been the first clue, but I was a dumb kid. I didn’t clue in till she pulled me into the bathroom and told me she’d let me do whatever I wanted to her for the right price.”
           Bucky was howling with laughter, as were Sam and Nat. Wanda was giggling, and I was biting my lip to keep from laughing because I knew Steve was already embarrassed enough.
           “Poor Stevie,” I breathed. “Look at it this way, though; you’re Captain America now. If you met her now, she’d probably pay to have sex with you.”
           Steve scowled at me. “Yes, (Y/N), because that makes me feel so much better,” he said. “Moving on. Truth or dare?”
           I bit my lip, but Steve wasn’t a threat. He was too sweet to play along with whatever Sam and Nat had going on.
           “Truth,” I said, and Steve grinned.
           “Have you ever had inappropriate thoughts about another member of the team?”
           Sam whooped and Nat was smirking. Cheeks hot, I narrowed my eyes. “Yes, right now,” I hissed. “Does contemplating kicking all your asses count as inappropriate?”
           “Easy, (Y/N),” Nat chuckled. “You know that’s not what Steve meant.”
           I scowled. “I’ll pass. Hand me the tequila.”
           Steve shook his head. “Uh-uh, no more shots for awhile,” he ordered. “I never asked you to tell us who. Just answer the question with a yes or no.”
           I sucked in a sharp breath, casting my eyes to my hands. “Yes,” I finally admitted, and I could practically feel the satisfaction rolling off of Natasha. Pursing my lips, I stood. “I’m gonna go get some water, I’ll be right back.”
           I left the common room, my cheeks burning. Just as I’d expected, Nat followed me out to the kitchen, and I turned on her.
           “What the hell are you doing?” I snapped. She gave me an innocent look.
           “I don’t know what you’re talking about, (Y/N).”
           “The fuck you don’t. I expected it from you and maybe Wanda, but Sam and even Steve?” I shook my head in disbelief. “When I told you I liked Bucky, that was in confidence, Nat. The last thing I needed was for you to tell his best friend!” I groaned and sat down at the island, burying my face in my hands. “Now everyone’s gonna know…”
           “I didn’t tell anyone, (Y/N), and I’m offended that you think I would,” Nat told me. “I wouldn’t have to tell anyone anyway. Everyone in the compound knows how you feel about Barnes.”
           My head shot up. “What?” I hissed, and Nat shrugged.
           “I mean, you are an excellent fighter, but when it comes to hiding your emotions you’re terrible,” she said. “Everyone can see it.”
           I felt as if I were going to be sick. “Does he know?” I whispered in a panic.
           “Nope.” Nat shook her head. “But he’s probably the only one. The guy has to be pretty clueless.”
           I shook my head. “So this whole game thing was just everyone trying to push us together?”
           “We’re all rooting for you, (Y/N),” Nat chuckled. “We want you to be happy, and we all want Barnes to stop being so antisocial, too.” She cocked her head to the side. “Although he’s a lot more fun tonight than he’s ever been before.”
           “He’s not antisocial, he’s just nervous to get close to people,” I defended, and Nat grinned.
           “Which is why we’re giving you both gentle nudges towards each other. Now come back out. I promise I won’t put you in any more awkward situations if you promise to loosen up and flirt a little with him.”
           “I wouldn’t know what to say –”
           “(Y/N), I’ve seen you charm even the most sour of people. Just be yourself and stop being so nervous.”
           So I followed her back out to the common room. I noticed that everyone had changed seats, and the only free space was the spot next to Bucky on the couch. I suspected Nat had something to do with this and I shot her a look but she was all of a sudden very interested in her drink. Biting my lip, I sat down next to Bucky.
           “Hope you’re recovered enough to play another drinking game,” Sam said to me, and I narrowed my eyes.
           “Why?”
           “Never have I ever!” Wanda exclaimed. “I’ll start. Never have I ever been arrested.”
           Everyone but me drank, but even if I had meant to I couldn’t. I’d finished my last beer and hadn’t bothered to get another drink. After Bucky set down his own drink he reached over to the coffee table and grabbed a glass, handing it to me.
           “Vodka lime,” he said, and then he gave me a rueful smile. “Steve told me it was your favourite so I mixed you up one when I got myself a drink.”
           “Thank you,” I murmured, in shock that he’d even thought of me. He grinned.
           “I would have given it to you a minute ago, but I figured you wouldn’t need to drink,” he chuckled. “You’re too new to the team to have ever been arrested before.”
           I ducked my head, blushing. Before I could say anything, though, Sam was speaking.
           “Never have I ever,” he said, “made out with an Olympic athlete.”
           No one drank but Sam, and we all groaned.
           “Sam, you gotta stop bringing that up,” Steve said. “We get it. You made out with Genie Bouchard in a bar in Montreal once. We’ve heard the story a hundred times.”
           Sam frowned. “Well sorry if y’all haven’t led as exciting a life as me.”
           Bucky rolled his eyes. “My turn,” he said. “Never have I ever thrown up on the Cyclone at Coney Island.”
           Steve was the only one to drink this time, and Bucky snickered when he shot him a dirty look. Natasha shook her head.
           “The point is to pick statements that more than one person can drink to, guys, c’mon,” she said. “Never have I ever had sex in a public place.”
           Everyone but Steve and Wanda drank this time. I was surprised when Bucky lifted his glass to his lips to take a drink, but then I remembered that Steve had told me that Bucky had been quite the ladies’ man back in their day. It was just so hard to picture the surly, quiet man beside me having ever been a big flirt.
           “Never have I ever stolen a car,” Steve offered, and everyone but Wanda and I drank. Nat narrowed her eyes at Steve.
           “That truck we stole to get to Jersey, you called it ‘borrowing’,” she said, using her hands to make air quotes around the last word. Steve shrugged.
           “It is what it is.”
           “Alright.” I clapped my hands together to draw everyone’s attention back to the game. “Never have I ever had sex on at least three different continents.”
           Nat, Wanda, Sam and I all drank. Bucky frowned.
           “Two,” he murmured. “So close.”
           Steve cocked an eyebrow at him and he grinned.
           “If you think there weren’t some European girls that didn’t want a night with an American sergeant then you’re crazy, Steve,” he teased, and Steve rolled his eyes. I pursed my lips, not wanting to think of Bucky with other girls. Nat must’ve seen my face because she quickly changed the subject.
           “Never have I ever,” she said, “fallen asleep during sex.”
           Only her and Sam drank, and I laughed. “Must have been pretty bad to have fallen asleep,” I remarked, and Nat rolled her eyes.
           “I hate vanilla sex,” she groaned, “and this guy was as boring as it gets.”
           “I was just really tired,” Sam explained. “The girl I was with got very offended, though. She left and wouldn’t answer any of my calls after that.”
           “I don’t blame her,” Bucky snorted. “You don’t leave a girl hanging like that, no matter how tired you are.”
           I bit my lip, feeling my cheeks warm at his words. Before him and Sam could get into one of their infamous disputes, however, Wanda spoke up.
           “Never have I ever had a sex dream about someone on the team.”
           Sam narrowed his eyes at her. “That’s not fair, you’re dating someone on the team,” he accused, referring to Vision. Wanda shrugged.
           “I stand by my statement,” she said as she took a drink.
           Begrudgingly, Sam took a drink, and then so did Nat and even Steve. I hesitated; of course, I’d had multiple, with the man sitting right next to me having starred in all of them. Cheeks burning, I finally lifted my glass to my lips to take a gulp while keeping my eyes downcast. Just when I thought I was the last one, out of the corner of my eye I saw Bucky take a drink. I tried not to overthink it, but my mind was racing. There were only so many women on the team, and I was going to drive myself mad wondering which one he had dreamt about.
           “Well, my drink is gone,” Wanda said, interrupting my thoughts, “and that’s probably it for me. I’m definitely feeling it now. If I want to get up at all tomorrow I should quit while I’m ahead.”
           Nat frowned. “Don’t go to bed yet!” she protested. “It’s still early.”
           “It’s two in the morning,” Steve snorted.
           “We could do something that doesn’t involve drinking, if y’all wanna stay up,” Sam suggested. “Poker?”
           Steve and Bucky agreed enthusiastically, as did Nat. Wanda shook her head.
           “Vis is probably waiting for me to go to bed. I should probably head upstairs.”
           We said goodnight to her, and then Steve looked at me. “(Y/N), you want to play?”
           “I don’t know how,” I admitted, and Steve shrugged.
           “We can teach you.”
           “No, you guys go ahead and play. I’ll stay up and watch, though. I’m not quite ready for bed yet.”
           So Nat found a deck of cards and the game started. I settled myself into the cushions of the couch with my legs crossed underneath me, nursing the rest of my vodka lime. Bucky looked over to me, a playful grin on his face.
           “Now don’t go tellin’ anyone what cards I’ve got, doll,” he teased, and with some of Thor’s liquor in him his Brooklyn accent was coming out. It was the first time I’d heard it and I smiled.
           “No worries,” I giggled, still feeling the effects of the alcohol myself. “I’ll keep my poker face on.”
           Steve snorted. “You’re in trouble then, Buck,” he warned. “(Y/N) has a terrible poker face.”
           I pouted at Steve, but Bucky shot me a warm smile. “I trust her,” he murmured, and my insides warmed. I gave him a shy smile in return, and he winked at me before turning his attention back to the game.
           For awhile I was enjoying watching them. There probably wasn’t a better group out there to watch – Each of them had perfected their poker faces. Years of military experience, and in Nat and Bucky’s cases years of being assassins and spies, would have trained them to know how to hold a blank face. They had also been drinking, though, and would slip up every once in awhile. I took note of each of their tells; Sam would scrunch his nose, Steve would rub the back of his neck, Nat’s eyes would dart quickly between the four of them, and the muscle in Bucky’s jaw would twitch.
           As hard as I tried to keep up, however, eventually it got too difficult. The lack of rest I’d gotten on the mission was finally catching up to me, and the liquor as well as just sitting there not doing anything wasn’t helping. I yawned, and Nat looked across the table at me.
           “Not you, too,” she said, and I shook my head.
           “I’m good,” I told her, even though I was having a hard time keeping my eyes open. Steve chuckled.
           “You’re stubborn as hell is what you are,” he taunted, and I stuck my tongue out at him.
           “I can go for hours.”
           But I could not. Not long after I could feel myself drifting, and I kept trying to force myself awake but my body wasn’t having it.
           “(Y/N), you really should go to bed,” Sam told me. “You look like you’re barely awake over there.”
           I wanted to argue, but I knew he was right so I just nodded instead. “Yeah, I think I’m gonna turn in for the night,” I murmured. I stretched out my legs and made to stand, but it had been a couple of hours since I’d been on my feet and with the liquor still running through my bloodstream, I was a little dizzy and stumbled a bit.
           The next thing I knew, Bucky was up and at my side, a hand on my back to steady me.
           “Easy, doll,” he murmured. “You alright?”
           I blushed. “Just tired,” I mumbled. “And I need some water, I think.”
           Bucky nodded, and then he slipped his arm around my waist. “Let’s get you some water and then make sure you get to bed, then,” he murmured, and he turned to look at the others. “I fold the next few rounds, I’m gonna take care of (Y/N) and then I’ll be back.”
           I’m pretty sure Nat was giving me a look but I didn’t turn around to check before Bucky was leading me out of the common room. When we got to the kitchen he sat me in a stool before going to pour me a glass of water. When he came back over, my eyes were half-lidded and he let out a soft chuckle before shaking his head.
           “We need to get you to bed,” he said. “You’ve had a long few days. D’you think you can make it to the elevator?”
           “Yeah,” I mumbled, sliding out of the stool onto my feet unsteadily. With my glass of water in one hand, Bucky set his other hand on my back and led me to the elevator.
           “(Y/N)’s floor please, F.R.I.D.A.Y.,” Bucky said to the AI.
           “Right away, Sergeant Barnes.”
           The elevator began to move, and I leaned heavily against Bucky. He was warm and he smelled like soap, and I could feel myself drifting.
           By the time the elevator stopped, I was barely awake. Without hesitating and without any difficulty, Bucky gathered me in his arms bridal-style and carried me down the hall to my room. I laid my head on his shoulder and my arms wound loosely around his neck, and all I could think was that I was comfortable enough to fall asleep right there.
           Bucky opened my door and carried me inside without switching on the lights. He set my water on the bedside table before gently lowering me to the bed, and then he reached for the water, handing it to me.
           “Drink some, doll,” he urged, “or you’ll regret it in the morning.”
           I gulped down a few mouthfuls before setting the glass back on the bedside table clumsily. “Thank you,” I mumbled, “for taking care of me.”
           Bucky gave me a warm smile that sent my heart fluttering. “No worries, doll. Now get some sleep, okay? You need it.”
           “So do you,” I said quietly, and when his brow furrowed I continued. “You barely slept ten hours the whole week we were on the mission.”
           He shook his head and chuckled. “You don’t miss much, do you?” he mused, and then he gave me another smile. “I promise to get some sleep if you do. Goodnight, (Y/N).”
           “Night,” I mumbled. He had turned and nearly made it to the door when something – most likely the liquor – drove me to do what I did next. “Bucky?” I said softly.
           He stopped dead in his tracks and turned back to me. “What is it, doll?”
           “Will you stay with me?”
           My voice had been barely above a whisper and for a minute I thought maybe he hadn’t heard me, but then I remembered that being a supersoldier there was no doubt that he had heard it. His eyes widened slightly, and then he pursed his lips.
           “(Y/N), I don’t know –”
           “Please?” I bit my lip. “I don’t want to sleep alone.”
           He looked torn, but finally he crossed the room and motioned for me to slide over. I did, and he pulled back the covers for me to crawl under before following me.
           “Come here, doll,” he murmured, stretching out his arm across the pillow, and I scooted closer to snuggle into his side. He tugged me close, and between the warmth of his body and the steady, even rise and fall of his chest with every breath he took, it wasn’t long before I started drifting. I vaguely remembered feeling something – his lips, maybe? – brush against my temple lightly, and then I was out.
           When I woke up the next morning, my whole body felt heavy and I regretted drinking so much right after a gruelling mission. I stretched, letting out a soft groan, but my movements disturbed the arm that had been draped loosely across my stomach. I froze – I had forgotten in my drunken state that I had asked Bucky to stay the night, and now I was panicking. Before I could even try to come up with a way out of this situation, though, Bucky was shifting and blinking his eyes open.
           “Hey, doll,” he murmured, his voice still thick with sleep. “How are you feelin’?”
           “Hungover,” I admitted in a small voice, and Bucky chuckled. He rolled onto his back and rubbed his eyes.
           “I actually think I might be, too,” he said. “I haven’t been hungover in decades. That Asgardian alcohol is killer.” He paused, and then looked over at me. His blue eyes were tired, but he looked more at ease than I think I’d ever seen him. “Did you sleep well?” he asked me.
           I bit my lip, then nodded. “I did,” I told him, blushing. “You?”
           Bucky’s smile was warm. “Better than I have in awhile,” he admitted.
           “I’m sorry if asking you to stay last night was weird,” I blurted out, and then ducked my head. “I was drunk and overtired and –”
           I didn’t get to finish my explanation, however, because all of a sudden Bucky was leaning in to close the distance between us. His lips pressed to mine and my body froze even though my mind was screaming at me to do something while my heart was nearly hammering out of my chest.
           Bucky pulled away, his cheeks tinted pink. “I’m sorry,” he murmured. “I wanted to do that all night last night but everyone was always around and then you were so tired…”
           I blinked. He was looking at me with increasingly worried eyes, and finally I found my voice.
           “Wait – You wanted to kiss me?”
           “That’s what I said,” he chuckled, and then he bit his lip. “Is that okay?”
           Instead of answering, I pulled his face back to mine. He caught on quickly, rolling his body so that he was overtop of me as our lips connected, his flesh hand coming up to cradle my head while he used his metal arm to support himself. His tongue probed at my lips until they yielded to him, and as our breaths mingled together my hands reached up to grip at Bucky’s waist.
           “You have no idea how hard it was holding myself back from taking you upstairs last night after that dare with the body shot and doing this then,” Bucky murmured, skimming his nose along my jaw and then kissing my throat lightly. My breath hitched and I felt him smile against my skin. “You like that, doll?”
           “Yes,” I whispered, my voice thick. Bucky pulled away enough to look at me, his blue irises nearly swallowed up by his lust-blown pupils, but there was a softness there as well as he smiled at me.
           “Good,” he murmured, “because I want to do this every day, doll, if you’ll let me.”
           I was temporarily snapped out of my haze, and I looked at him with my brow furrowed. “What are you saying?” I asked uncertainly, and Bucky’s smile was shy.
           “I like you, (Y/N),” he told me. “A lot. I have for awhile now, but I never knew how to tell you…”
           “So this wasn’t just brought on by the drinking games and the liquor and me asking you to stay last night?”
           Bucky chuckled as he shook his head. “Not at all, doll,” he assured me, and then he began to pepper kisses along my jaw. “I want you every day, if you’ll have me.”
           His actions were confident but his eyes were nervous, and I reached up to cup his cheek in my hand. His skin was warm and the stubble on his face was rough, but he leaned into my touch as his eyes drifted shut and I knew in that moment that this beautiful man – this man that I had been pining over for months – really did feel for me the way I felt for him.
           “Show me just how much you want me, Sergeant,” I said in a husky voice as I looked up at him. “I’m yours.”
           Bucky made a quiet noise in the back of his throat, and then he crushed his lips to mine with feverish passion. My hands slid up under the hem of his t-shirt to slide along the muscles of his back, my fingernails grazing his skin lightly and drawing a growl from his throat. Disconnecting our kiss, he sat back on his knees and yanked the t-shirt over his head before tossing it carelessly to the floor. I sat up, tracing my fingertips over the planes of his abdomen, and when I looked up his eyes were blue fire, causing my stomach to flip in anticipation. Tugging lightly at my shirt, he stared at me as if waiting for my permission. I nodded and then the shirt was on the floor with his.
           Bucky’s lips latched onto one of my nipples and I let out a quiet moan, arching my back towards him. As his mouth alternated between my breasts his flesh hand toyed with the waistband of my leggings before slipping past it and underneath my panties. When his fingertips slid through my folds my moan was louder, and he pulled away from my breasts to smirk at me.
           “So wet, doll,” he murmured, his voice thick with desire. “This all for me?”
           “Mmm…” I managed to hum, and then Bucky was retracting his hand and I let out a soft whine at the loss of contact. He brought his fingers to his mouth to lick away my juices and a fresh wave of heat flooded to my core.
           “So fucking sweet,” he breathed. “I’m gonna have to get a better taste.”
           The next thing I knew, I was on my back and he had yanked the rest of my clothes off in one swift move, leaving me entirely naked under his hungry eyes. At this point I was practically aching to be touched and it must have showed on my face because Bucky flashed me a sinful grin before spreading my legs with his hands and diving in to swipe his tongue along the length of my folds.
           My hips bucked upward at the sudden contact and I let out a gasp. Bucky’s hands reached up to hold my hips in place as his mouth worked over me, drawing whimpers and moans from me. It didn’t take long for him to bring me to release, a panting and sweating mess tangled in the sheets.
           Bucky pressed a few light kisses to the inside of my thigh before he was sliding up my body and claiming my lips in a kiss. I could taste myself on his tongue, and it sent a fresh wave of arousal to my core.
           “Need you now,” I managed to huff out, grinding myself against his still-clothed erection, and Bucky grinned before quickly shedding the rest of his clothing. He slid his solid member through my folds slowly and I groaned, glaring up at him.
           “Stop teasing,” I hissed. “There’s plenty of time for that later, but if you don’t fuck me right now I honest to god might explode.”
           As I spoke my legs wrapped around his waist to pull him closer to me. His eyes were dark as pitch and he growled before lining up with my entrance and sliding in with one thrust. I hadn’t been prepared for his size and my eyes fluttered shut as I let out a breathless, “James…”
           He stilled inside of me, and when I opened my eyes, he was regarding me with a mixture of shock, desire and tenderness. “Say it again,” he murmured huskily.
           “James,” I whispered, and then he was crushing his lips to mine and rolling his hips into me. My nails dug into his back, wanting to pull him as close to me as possible, and he pressed his face against my neck to suck lightly at my throat. It didn’t take long before I could feel my second orgasm that morning coming on, and I knew Bucky was also nearing release because his thrusts were getting sloppier. I dug my heels into his back as my hands grasped at his arms, opening my eyes to find that he was already looking at me.
           “James…” I breathed. “I wanna feel you come inside me, James, please.”
           “Fuck, doll,” he groaned, and then with a couple more thrusts he was spilling inside me with a grunt. His orgasm brought on my own and I cried out, my head pushing back into the pillows as my back arched up into Bucky’s body. As we came down from our highs he cradled me in his arms as he rolled us over to our sides, his now-softened member slipping out of my tender heat. I let out a soft moan at the loss of his length, feeling a mixture of our juices dripping down my thigh. Bucky reached up to tuck a damp lock of hair behind my ear.
           “Was that okay?” he murmured, and I let out a breathless laugh.
           “Are you kidding me, Buck? That was a hell of a lot better than just okay. My only regret is that we haven’t been doing this all along.”
           Bucky chuckled, but he looked relieved. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you how I felt sooner.”
           I rolled on top of him, pressing my lips to his. “Guess that just means we’ll have to make up for all that lost time,” I teased, wiggling my hips against his and grinning delightedly in finding out he was already half-hard again. Bucky smirked as he lifted his hands to grasp my hips, but just before he could lift me up to pull me down onto him, a shout echoed through the compound, followed by laughter and then the sound of glass breaking. Bucky and I stilled.
           “I will kill you!” we heard Clint roar, and I giggled.
           “Guess Clint found the dog food. Should we go make sure Sam doesn’t get himself killed?”
           Bucky shook his head. “Nah, Wilson’s a grown man, he can take care of himself,” he murmured, sitting up to place kisses along my jaw. “Now, where were we?”
           I caught his lips with mine and was just about to line him up with my entrance when this time F.R.I.D.A.Y. interrupted us.
           “Sergeant Barnes, Ms. (Y/L/N), Mr. Stank requests that everyone meet him in the board room immediately.”
           Both Bucky and I burst out laughing, and when we finally calmed down enough to catch our breaths I said, “I suppose we should get dressed and get down there before Tony sends someone looking for us.”
           “Yes, because I have nothing better to do right this moment than deal with an angry Barton and an angry Stark.”
           I grinned and kissed him quickly before rolling off of him and pulling on a sweatshirt. “I promise I’ll make it up to you later,” I told him. “After all, we’ve got all the time in the world now.”
Interview TALKING ‘BOUT MY GENERATION: WILL BUTLER
Talking to Will Butler is a bit like trying to have a conversation with a human magpie. Hugely enthusiastic and with a constant giggle on the go (“I have a nervous laugh, so I laugh at more things than I should…”), the 37-year-old has a tendency to veer off down strange tangents, taking your original point but then getting distracted or excited by some other new, shiny train of thought in a different direction.
You can tell he’s smart - not just booksmart, but the kind of smart where you can practically see the cogs turning at 100mph. “I love knowledge for its own sake,” he professes at one point. “I believe in it to a fault. I think it’s worth knowing all this shit, for no other reason than just knowing that it’s true.” And it’s this attitude that’s filled the three years since ‘Everything Now’ - he and his Arcade Fire bandmates’ society-skewering fifth LP.
In that time, amid world tours and festival headlines, Will has had two more children - twins - and went to Harvard to study a masters in public policy. He also found time to record ‘Generations’ - a second solo effort that takes the brilliantly all-over-the-place nature of 2015’s ‘Policy’ and hones it into something that’s more pointed, though still clearly fuelled by the same curious mind. Or as he puts it: “The first [album] it’s like, ‘I’m at the market! There’s some eggplants! Oh there’s a nice sausage guy! And OK cool I’ll get some of those and these!’ But then ‘Generations’ was much more like, ‘I’ve been storing these bones in my freezer for two years and now we’re gonna boil this down to make the pure essence of the beast’.”
Like most debuts from artists splintering off from their main projects, ‘Policy’ had been born from accumulating a collection of material that didn’t fit with his band. Unlike most, Will had just been nominated for an Oscar (for his soundtrack to Joaquin Phoenix film Her) before its release, “so that was a confidence boost,” he notes amiably. Conversely, the essence of ‘Generations’’ particular beast seems a far more targeted one - one intrinsically linked with the intense political conversations the musician had found himself wrangling with during his recent studies.
“I always want whatever I’m making to emerge out of what I’m living and for it to help me understand how I’m living better, so going to policy school was certainly part of that artistic project as well as the ‘what do we fucking do?’ project,” he explains. “I jokingly say that I was radicalised at Harvard, which is basically true. I was in a mid-career programme, so there were 25-year-old geniuses but also people in their middle age who’d worked in the UN in Pakistan or the government in Mexico. They had this whole perspective of how fucked everything is across the whole globe so it was… educational.
As such, his second brims with a sense of palpable unease for a society that’s not only crumbling before our eyes right now, but has been doing so intermittently for decades and centuries. The twinkling, finger-clicking patter of ‘Close My Eyes’ belies the all-too-timely despair beneath it (“The photograph is new / But I seen that same headline, and I got to dance to keep from crying”), Randy Newman-esque closer ‘Fine’ digs right back to “George Washington and all his slaves,” while ‘Not Gonna Die’, he explains, was written in direct response to the November 2015 Bataclan shootings.“All these things hit different people in different ways, but that was so close to home,” he says. “It was Christmas after that and I was shopping in Manhattan; I walked into Sephora and it was super crowded and I thought, there’s a lot of people in here, where would I go [if something like that happened]? And I got so mad. It fucking worked. You made me scared. I’m not gonna die in Sephora on 5th Avenue but you made me think about it, you fucking pieces of shit.“Mike Pence was writing about it before he was running for Vice President, like, ‘We need to make sure we don’t have any immigrants come in because the immigrants can do this to us here’. And it’s like, I’m not gonna be killed by a woman fleeing violence in Guatemala!! The terrorists and the people saying ‘Be afraid!’: what you’re doing is working, and I AM afraid, and fuck you.”
Perhaps most interestingly, however, ‘Generations’ doesn’t just point the finger outwards, it also poses questions of the singer’s own inherent part in it all. “A big chunk of this record is asking: What’s my place in American history? What’s my place in America’s present?” he explained in a previous statement about the album. “Both in general, but also extremely particularly: me as Will Butler, rich person, white person, Mormon, Yankee, parent, musician. What do I do? What can I do?”
“It’s basically like, ‘My God, how did we get here?’ - that Talking Heads line,” he continues now. “The record is at times literally a conversation with people arguing back and forth, and there’s a lot of questions raised and the answers aren’t answers - you just end the conversation in a different spot. There’s something to that process of discussing and coming to some sort of revelation only to find out what’s lacking there, and then you move onto the next conversation and find out what’s lacking there. I was pleased that the material felt cyclical and of a piece, and you feel like you’re in a different spot than you were at the beginning.”
Because yes, his latest might not provide all the answers - “This is a musical work and I don’t know what the end notes are,” he admits - but ‘Generations’ does emphasise the importance of asking the questions and having the conversations, both with the world and with yourself. And if you can have them over an album of musically explorative, rich and often perversely funny new offerings? All the better.
Next, he’ll return to the fold to begin work on Arcade Fire’s sixth opus. Writing for that had originally started in New Orleans before the pandemic hit, but the band “don’t have the file management down to really do it at a distance,” he chuckles. “Win and Régine are always demoing and working, and I’ve done a little. We always work on a record for about a year and a half and we’re not off that pace yet, we’re still weirdly on track…”
You can bet by the time that record lands, he’ll have chalked up a handful of other accomplishments to his name, too; lord only knows the political battleground of the coming weeks will give him enough food for thought. And in the inquisitive mind of Will Butler, thought and curiosity are clearly the most nourishing tools of all. “You can write a love song that’s super true, but can you write a history song that also is? And if it comes out right and there’s some value in it, then what does that mean?” he muses. “It’s about just trying different angles to express something true.”
‘Generations’ is out now via Merge.
Butler’s Bits
‘Generations’ is undoubtedly an album rooted in politics and society - this much we know. But it’s also a record that digs into the musician’s relationship with other parts of the human experience…
HUMOUR “It’s a coping mechanism and it’s also a worldview. There’s not exactly a cabaret scene in New York but the comedy here is quite musical and there’s a lot of comedians that interact with people in interesting ways. They’re a bit younger than me - I’m the oldest millennial - but there’s something in that spirit that feels relevant.”
RELIGION “I grew up Mormon and I’m still ethnically Mormon. It’s like The Smiths song, ‘Meet Me At The Cemetery Gates’ - ‘Keats and Yeats are on your side, and Wilde is on mine’, you lose, haha. I’m sure Yeats is such a fucking asshole but that’s my heritage. The classic lineage of the Western canon is how I grew up.”
ADULTHOOD “I have three kids now, and it doesn’t make me worry about the future so much as it’s made me learn so much about humanity watching them - watching how it all goes into the ‘this is what humans are’ mill. On ‘Policy’, the protagonists are a motley crew of rag-tag whatevers, whereas this is much more a coming of age novel - not like a teenager becoming an adult, but an adult becoming a worse adult…”
As featured in the October 2020 issue of DIY, out now.
TFATWS Spoilers under the cut
Literally the following is my thoughts and opinions, and there are probably some unpopular opinions lol. It's kinda really long lol.
Starting with some positives.
I loved how the two leads had storylines that mirrored each other. Sam needed to become Captain America and gain a title and Bucky needed to move on from The Winter Solider and loose a title.
Sam. Just Sam I loved him before but now I love him more.
Sam becoming Cap.
I loved Isaiah and his story.
I loved Sam's family, how they welcomed Bucky and the struggles Sarah had.
I really liked how they spent time with both Sam and Bucky and didn't forget the show was supposed to be about both of them. Often times shows tend to lean into the more popular or fan favorite lead and this show didn't do that. When Sam took center it felt natural and when Bucky took center it felt natural.
The Wakandans were great. I love Ayo and her friendship with Bucky.
Zemo was fine and fun enough.
John Walker was incredibly done. Wyatt Russell did an amazing job and the scene with the blood on the shield will forever be in my memory. Hands down one of the most impactful MCU moments.
I like the genderbend on Karl/Karli and the direction they took her character. People that go from sympathetic ideas to unforgivable means, make good villains. I think her more boring elements come from the lack of development she got.
Now on to the negatives.
This show could have been like two hours shorter and still told the same story with the same impact. Also earlier episodes, (maybe later episodes too I might have just gotten used to it and stopped noticing lol), had some weird ADR moments. IDK what happened behind the scenes but it was noticeable.
I would have loved it if one of the episodes was a flashback episode. The Sharon twist was obvious from the first episode she appeared in but like they thought it was good enough to save confirmation for the mid/end of the finale? Both her and Karli would have been benefited from a flashback episode.
Karli should have fought Bucky while Sam was focused on Walker. Sam could have had a moment where he tells him he will never be forgiven and Walker would responded with something similar to "I do what is right. I don't need forgiveness." Then when he becomes USAgent it lands more like the next progression in an arc rather than the redemption arc this could be interpreted as. I personally think this is a stepping stone and not a redemption but the MCU (and Disney) doesnt have a great track record when it comes to handling anything with nuance and the fans have an even worse track record when handling things that arent black and white. I guess my point is they could have handled the John Walker set up better.
Speaking of set up, this entire show was set up. This is my main and only real problem with this show. Nothing felt like it was resolved at the end. Karli even says she was part of a bigger movement. Killing her didn't change the fact a lot of people felt the un blip ruined their lives. People always shit on Tony for wanting to bring people back five years later instead of going back in time but like it had been five years, while some like Steve and Natasha hadn't moved on, others had. Some had better lives. Assuming everyone wanted to back to the way things used to be would also be a mistake. This has consequences too, as we see in these shows. But ruining the lives of the people who had bettered themselves would have been shitty too. And yea some people who had been bettered were worsened once again when the un blip happened but my point is going back and erasing the five years would have been shitty too. There is not really a right answer here as the right answer would have been to either stop the snap before it happened or to come to terms with the fact that the snap can never be undone. Leaving everyone as dead might have hurt, but it was the best thing for a community that had five years of mourning and moving on and counseling ETC. Ooof that was a tangent lol and I could probably write an essay so going back to my original point about set up. The flag smashers, or at least people who think the way they did still exist, Sharon Carter is the powerbroker but Sam and Bucky dont know and now shes back as agent 13, John Walker went from war hero to committing war crimes and his journey as USAgent is just starting, Sam has taken the Cap mantle and is ready to begin acting as Cap, and Bucky is both coming to terms with and moving on from his past. Nothing is actually resolved in this mini series. I know it's supposed to make you excited for the next movie/show/season whatever but have six episodes of little to no payoff IMO made for a flat show.
Building off the set up problem. This show had too much going on. Sam and Bucky each had their own personal journey (The A and B plot depending on the episode), Sam and Bucky being friends and their shared journey (C), John Walker and the Flag Smashers (the D and E plot depending on the episode), Zemo and the Wakandans (F), The PowerBroker/Sharon (G), The boat and Sarah which could be considered part of Sam's plot but since if you cut it out the only thing that actually effected Sam's journey would be the bank in the first episode and yet it still went on till basically the end I'm calling it it's own plot (H), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, which might be part of John Walker's story but since it's all set up for her to take a bigger role in the future and his set up could be completed without her I'm counts her separately (I), then you have the big meeting at the end, the senators and policy makers making choices the vote that they keep mentioning and once again more set up... (J). 10 ideas by my count, all needed their own set up, follow through, and payoff. And yes some stuff like Valentina the pay off will come later but still... It's all too many plots! And thats not mentioning side characters that were new to the show that they wanted to spend time with but couldn't.
Even though I think the shows aren't comparable/two different genres WandaVision had two more episodes (and yes some were shorter but I already mentioned I think FATWS could have benefited from that), completed all the main plots and had Wanda's journey (A), Vision's journey (B), Agatha, Pietro/Ralph, and the citizens of the hex (C), Outside the hex Monica (D), Outside the hex everyone else and sure you can separate Darcy, Jimmy and Heyward but none of them were setting up future stories or had their own distinctive plot outside the hex thing like Monica so she is the only one I am separating (E), the kids who could be counted as an extension of the Wanda and Vision plots since they didnt really have their own arc or story (F). 6 total. And some of those could be combined. Like I think we should separate Wanda Vision and the kids but technically they are just an extension of Wanda. And same with Monica, her story was mostly intertwined with Darcy, Jimmy and the outside the hex stuff. I separated her since I think she had enough moments to herself and she set up secret invasion or whatever, but like Valentina being a part of John's story it is arguable. Of these plots only the missing witness Jimmy thing, Wanda's post credits moment a moment seperate from everything else, Monica's mid credits i think? moment another one separate from everything else, and white vision were unresolved. They gave Agatha an opening ending but it was still an ending. And yes Darcy Heyward etc will probably come back but the plot they had here was finished. So arguably they had 2/6 unfinished plots. And if you don't count Jimmy's witness as a plot and just count it as an unanswered question then 1/6. And technically white vision is just half a vision and the other vision got a complete plot so really it's 0.5/6 At best they completed 92(ish)% of the plots and left 8 (ish) % for future stuff.
In contrast FATWS only finished Sam's journey into becoming Cap, Zemo and the Wakandans, and arguably Sam and Bucky's friendship. You might be able to argue that Bucky had a full circle moment with the guy whose son he killed, but that is one guy and Bucky has been carrying around a list of people like that guy. It's not the end of a story it is the start of a journey. And maybe it is possible to say the boat thing had an ending kinda. 2/10 completed. maybe 3/10 if you wanna push it 5/10. IMO at best they completed 50% of plot set up.
Clearly FATWS is meant to be this way and thats why it bothered me. They want you to watch Cap 4 or whatever they decide to call the theatrical movie that will come after this. I guess I was just expecting it to stand on it's own, and other than Sam's journey into becoming Captain America, which was amazing and deserved in every way, nothing this show did felt like it could have stood on its own. I know it's arguable that was the main story and only story that deserved to end. But I've already pointed out all the other running plots this show had, and I think at least two or three of them should have had follow through in the show.
Someone who plans to never seen an MCU movie after these shows could have watched WandaVision and enjoyed it. That is not the case for FATWS. If you don't plan on watching any MCU stuff in the future you won't know how over half the plots of this show will end. THis isn't even how the movies work. They each tell their own story while also setting up other things, so it is clear they know how to do this.
I can see why Disney decided to submit it as a series and not a mini series. Not only do they not want to compete with themselves (nominating WV as a miniseries) but also this isn't a miniseries.
I guess to conclude I'll say I did really enjoy watching this show. It was fun and there were some great moments. It featured amazing character and amazing actors, but I wish it had bothered to finish more of what it started.
Thank you so much for reading till the end of a post that has surely become unintelligible gloop by now. If you disagree I'd love to hear why!
