Chapter 3: A New Beginning, A Fragile Hope

Y/N sighed, a mix of skepticism and hope in her eyes, as she murmured almost inaudibly, "We'll see about that."

Natasha glanced back, her expression briefly faltering at Y/N's comment, revealing a glimpse of the vulnerability she usually kept so well hidden. The weight of Y/N's guarded trust pressed heavily on her, a reminder of the long road ahead.

As they arrived at Y/N's place, Natasha was quick to help. She carefully lifted the car seat with Elena still nestled inside and gathered Y/N's belongings, allowing Y/N to lead the way up the stairs to her apartment. Natasha's usual smooth, confident stride was replaced with a cautious tread, her every move calculated to ensure the baby's comfort.

As they ascended, Natasha began to speak, her voice a mix of concern and barely-contained excitement. "If you need anything for yourself or Elena, just let me know. I can go out and get it, no problem. Diapers, formula, anything at all." She paused, adding, "Or even just some fresh air. I'm here to help, Y/N."

Y/N, however, seemed unimpressed, rolling her eyes at Natasha's offer and continuing her walk in silence. Natasha, undeterred, followed closely behind, her eyes never leaving the baby.

Once they reached the apartment, Natasha hesitated at the door, the question on the tip of her tongue. "Do you...do you want me to stay the night? I can sleep on the couch, of course. Just in case Elena wakes up, I can help."

At this, Y/N stopped abruptly, turning to face Natasha with a cold, distant look in her eyes. "No," she said flatly, the single word cutting through the air like a knife. Without another word, she continued into the apartment, leaving Natasha standing in the doorway.

Taking the car seat from Natasha, Y/N placed it gently on the table and carefully lifted Elena out, holding her close to her chest. Natasha, now inside the apartment, looked around awkwardly, the silence between them growing heavier by the second.

"I'm just trying to help, Y/N," Natasha finally said, her voice low and earnest. She was trying to bridge the gap between them, but the space felt insurmountable.

Y/N's response was clipped, a sharp edge to her words. "That's nice, but I'm good without your help."

As Y/N muttered something under her breath about probably having to get used to managing alone sooner or later, Natasha pretended not to hear it. But the words stung, burrowing deep into her heart. She had hoped for a chance to prove herself, to show that she was more than her past mistakes. Yet, here she was, feeling like an outsider in her own child's life.

This was going to be harder than Natasha had thought. The realization settled in, a heavy, unwelcome guest. She knew the journey to earn Y/N's trust and to be a part of Elena's life wouldn't be easy, but the reality of it was far more challenging than she had anticipated.

Natasha's gaze lingered on Y/N and Elena, a picture of tenderness and strength. She yearned to be a part of that picture, to contribute to the warmth and security that enveloped them. But for now, she was on the outside, looking in, her heart aching with a mix of love and regret.

The room was filled with a quiet tension, a silent battle of wills and emotions. Natasha, despite her best efforts, felt like she was walking on thin ice, each word and action meticulously weighed for fear of causing further rifts.

As Y/N continued to care for Elena, Natasha's mind raced with thoughts and plans, each more desperate than the last to find a way into their lives. But as she watched the mother and daughter, a deep understanding settled within her. This wasn't about grand gestures or proving herself in a single moment. It was about patience, consistency, and the slow, steady building of trust.

With a heavy heart, Natasha took a step back, both physically and metaphorically. She knew she needed to give Y/N space, to respect her boundaries, and to be there when Y/N was ready to let her in. It was a difficult pill to swallow.

Natasha bit her lip, a gesture of uncertainty, before she made her way over to Y/N. She was acutely aware of the tension in the air, the invisible barrier that Y/N had erected between them. As she approached, Natasha noticed Y/N's subtle but definite tensing, a silent but clear indication of her discomfort. The ache in Natasha's heart grew, but she tried to push it aside, focusing instead on the reason she was there.

Standing a respectful distance away, Natasha looked down at her newborn daughter, her eyes softening with an emotion so deep and pure. "Goodbye, little one," she whispered, her voice filled with a tenderness that was reserved only for Elena. Her gaze then shifted to Y/N, and she offered a quiet, "Bye, Y/N," her voice barely more than a murmur.

Y/N offered nothing more than a nod in response, her expression guarded, her eyes revealing a storm of emotions she wasn't ready to share.

With a heavy heart, Natasha turned and left the apartment, the sound of the door closing echoing in the silent hallway. She let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. The reality of the situation was hitting her harder than she had anticipated. Natasha needed to talk, to vent, to seek advice, and despite her frustration, there were only two people she could turn to - Yelena and Kate. They were the only ones who knew the whole story, the only ones who could possibly understand the tumultuous emotions she was grappling with.

"Detka, can you go get some tomatoes from the garden? Steve already ate all of the freaking salsa," Wanda grumbled dramatically, falling into your arms as you were mid conversation with Natasha and Maria about their work.

"He probably intended to bottom tonight," Natasha remarks with a shit stirring grin, you cackled in solidarity, but the both of you stopped when your wives stood shoulder to shoulder with a menacing tilt to their heads.

"Welp, those tomatoes aren't gonna pick themselves," you noted before running off, you avoided looking back, afraid to see Natasha's stony glare as you abandoned her with them.

Every man for themselves a mantra you live by, well, only when it comes to angry spouses. As an Avenger you were as selfless as the rest, but now you got to be more selfish in retirement.

Natasha, unfortunately, was your victim.

When you entered the massive greenhouse you took a second to admire your wives handiwork. The brunette had a knack for gardening, a green thumb if you will. The greenhouse was her go to place to find her zen after a day of dealing with you, Billy, Tommy, and Ella.

The witch loved you all, her beautiful family, but some days the lot of you made her feel a tad bit homicidal. On those days she gardened.

It wasn't hard to find the tomatoes, they were ripe and ready on a set of entangled vines. But before you could bring it to her, you were too enamored by the conversation your kids were having in their little cove behind the garden.

"I can't do it," Tommy groaned. "Yeah they just won't understand," Morgan Stark agreed with him, and you leaned in to hopefully garner more context for their troubled minds.

"At least Uncle Tony is bi," Raina Belova countered, "He'll be more understanding."

"Have you met our dad?" Anthony, the only Jr present, said in an incredulous manner. "He even claims Fido is gay, he's totally unhinged."

You had to put a hand over your mouth, the amusement you were experiencing was unreal.

"Couldn't be us," Elena teased, "I'm gay as hell, and Bryce here is both queer and nonbinary."

Oh goodness... Never in your days did you expect your kids to keep secrets from you, but for it to be such a silly one it honestly made you want to interrupt the conversation at hand.

To remind them that no matter what, you'd all continue to love them, but it was too funny.

"Mama is going to be mad," Celeste Belova added, "She always said being gay is the way."

"I thought she was ace?" Billy inquired. "She is, but that doesn't make her any less gay."

After the conversation moved on to who they were crushing on you snuck back to the party. The overall consensus being that every last one of your collective brood, besides your youngest, Ella, who was only five, and Natasha and Maria's powerful duo, said they're straight.

"Where have you been?" You ignored your wife, handing her the basket of ingredients while calling all of your friends to the dining room. Tony whined, "What is so important?"

"You guys will not believe what I just heard..."

Wanda rolled her eyes as you spun your tale, she chopped up the tomatoes, jalapeños and onions as you enamored the group of friends.

"Thank God we're safe," Maria teased, turning to her wife with a genuinely relieved smile. "Right? Can you imagine having to attend two straight weddings? And pretend to like it?"

"Oh jeez," you gasped, "I didn't think of that."

Wanda tossed the ingredients into a bowl as the lot of you bantered back and forth, her patience already running thin with you all.

"Y/N, this joke isn't funny." Yelena shook her head in defiance when you reminded her that this wasn't a joke. "You don't know what you are talking about. Must be hearing loss..."

Kate put a hand on her wife's shoulder, "It's true Lena, they've both told me already."

"You traitor!" Yelena ripped her arm away as if the raven haired woman had burned her skin.

You now worried that you'd inspired divorces.

"No," Tony gasped, shaking his head in fear as the unexpected reality set in. "You're lying, you have to be. No son of mine is straight!"

"Honey," Steve called out for him, "It'll be okay, we always knew it would be a possibility."

"It most certainly is not okay," he grimaced, then in a flash he was outside, calling for your children to gather around the hibachi station.

"Where's the fire pops?" Morgan jests, but quickly zips her lips as she sees her dad looking as if he was on the verge of a breakdown.

"Tell me Y/N's lying," he pleads, "That you're not straight, my fragile ticker can't take this."

"Tony!" Steve shrieked, "Don't use an old ailment to guilt the kids into being gay..."

"Stay out of this babe!" He growled, "As far as I am concerned they're gay. Y/N's a liar."

"Am not!" You gasped, "They're all heteros."

"Not us!" Bryce interjected. "We're queer."

"That's our precious babies," Natasha coo'd, arms opened wide for her kids to run into, and the both of their teens instantly ran at her.

Bucky and Sam had entered your backyard just as the revelation took place. You all watched as they took three steps back, baby carrier in hand as they looked to your kids as if they were all diseased. "We're just being cautious."

You snorted softly, "We understand fellas."

Wanda glared at you, but you remained unfazed for now. Too busy finding the dramatics entertaining to see the horror. Wanda saw it though, she looked out to see all of the kids wearing terrified expressions. She was about to console them, but then a fight broke out beside you, and you had to laugh.

"This is all your fault Kate Belova!" Yelena shrieked, "It was all of that organic mac and cheese you fed them when I was on missions!"

"Mac and cheese being healthy doesn't make a child straight," Kate shrieked back, hands running down her face as she realized her plans for a peaceful barbecue ended with this.

"If it had been orange they might have been more connected to the rainbow Kate!" Yelena went on, "It's like our gay power source."

"Well, with Wanda's garden the kids eat the entire rainbow and look at them, straight."

Yelena found your assistance unwelcome, "Keep out of this Y/N Maximoff. Your kids aren't all old enough to say yet, you still have a chance! Mine are all done... Stupid preteens"

"Well, that's not exactly true," you reasoned, "None of you have been to college yet, that's when you'll really know if you're gay or not."

Natasha, Yelena and Tony all nodded, they found your reasoning the most logical. It was a lot easier than accepting they're all straight.

"Okay, that's enough!" Wanda interjected, her tone terrifying, "Look at what you're doing to them. They can't help it if they're straight."

"I wanna be gay like mama," Ella murmured, clearly she just wanted to fit in with the crowd, and therefore you praised her, "Smart girl."

Wanda entered your mind with a warning, she smirked as you lifted Ella onto your hip, then you fell into unexpected silence by her side.

"Haha, you're like so whipped, "Yelena cackled.

Wanda glared at her. "You don't scare me wiggly woo, my kids being straight is enough."

"Yelena," Kate sighed, "Knock it off, and try telling the girls that you love them."

"Of course I love them," she rushed out angrily, "That's not even a question, they're moy deti."

Celeste and Raina ran into the blondes side, their tears of relief soaked into her shirt, and made her see they were genuinely scared this would lose them her love. "Shh, mama loves you always, even if you make dumb choices."

Tony and Steve were in a standoff of sorts, the billionaire sipped on his margarita slowly as they appeared to be having a conversation with only their eyes. Tony rolled his, but after a moment of incoherent grumbling he nodded. Morgan and Tony Jr. approached their dads after being called forward, Steve embraced them first, and wholly. Tony gave them both side hugs, and whispered that he just needed time to cope, but he loved them regardless.

Then you heard him brush by with his son, begging him to take it back, only to find out his son was in a long term relationship with a girl. That study buddy of his was so much more...

Like father, like son you suppose.

You looked out to see your boys stood side by side, Billy gripped Tommy's hand for dear life. Wanda was about to call them over, but you beat her to it as guilt overwhelmed your heart. The boys scurried over, and Wanda sent you an adoring smile as you kissed the both of their heads, and hugged them tight. "I love you," falling from all of your lips in succession.

After everyone had time to process the news, the vibe returned to one of relaxation. Wanda set up the grill for Sam, and the master chef himself began to put on a show for everyone.

Once the plates were served you all moved to the fire pit, where you talked about all you'd missed in each other's life while the younger kids sat in front of the projector playing Up.

Then, as the sun officially fell, everyone began to clear out. Saying their goodbyes at the front door, where you hugged each kid, an apology of sorts on your lip for the drama you stirred. Each one forgave you, some even thanked you for finally getting the conversation over with.

When everyone was officially gone you moved back outside to clean up. Tommy helped you, while Billy helped clean the kitchen so that Wanda could focus on Ella's bath, and bedtime.

It was an entire hours worth of work, you were beyond exhausted as you fell into the mattress. You nearly passed out without your wife, but soon enough Wanda slipped into the bed. She wore a thoughtful expression, weighing out whether to disturb you or not, but she soon reasoned you'd appreciate her words, "Detka..."

"Yes baby?" You rolled onto your side, using your elbow to prop yourself up so you could look down at her. She looked to you with a warm smile, then she was yawning, "Don't worry." She paused to pull you into her arms before whispering in your ear: "Billy was not being honest. We do indeed have a gay son."

You laughed so hard tears streamed down your face and pooled in the crook of your equally as amused wife's neck. That was the last thing you expected to hear from her, if anything you had anticipated a continuation of her scolding.

"I'll scold you more tomorrow," she teased, "But for now, we should get some sleep."

Pairing: Yelena Belova x Reader

Summary: When Yelena goes on a mission you struggle to fill in the days she’s gone.

AC: I wish to write more Yelena so here’s a little idea I had, enjoy!!

“Be safe, okay?” you say to Yelena while she hugs you tightly. “I always am” she replies with confidence, her accent thick. “I mean it Elena” you spoke in a more serious tone. “Shush detka, you know I will” Yelena whispers to you, assuring she’ll be safe.

“Break it up you two, we have to go” Natasha interrupts the moment. You rolled your eyes at Natasha once Yelena let you out of her protective hold. “A week and I’ll be home, it’ll go so fast you won’t even know I’m gone” Yelena smiles, placing a kiss on your forehead. You give her a soft smile. If only she knew how you filled the days she was gone.

You watched as Yelena followed Nat onto the quinjet with the rest of the team, you waved them off before making your way to through the compound to your car. Driving back to the apartment you shared with Yelena in silence.

When you got home you did a quick tidy up of the mess Yelena felt behind while making sure she had everything for the mission. The smell of her perfume still lingered strongly throughout the apartment, making tonight easier on you than most. You ordered take out, something you rarely did when Yelena was home. You always cooked for her, showing her new recipes and then weeks later she’d have a go at cooking something you taught her. With your take out and a thick blanket you got comfortable on the sofa and started to catch up on the shows you’d been waiting to watch.

Whenever Yelena was home, most of the time was spent together. Yelena was still learning how to be herself, finding what she liked to do and what she didn’t, what brought her comfort and what didn’t. She always made it clear that you always brought her happiness and safety. She refused to take dating advice from Natasha as she wanted to ‘wow’ you herself, without help and that she did.

At first, when you first met Yelena, you thought she was cocky and overconfident, you bickered with her multiple times whenever she would join movie nights at Kate’s. Kate is your best friend, and she has taken great pride in match making you and Yelena.

Your first night with Yelena was spent on the sofa, passing out midway through an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, awoken by the sound of the early morning city traffic making it’s way through the window you left open mistakenly. You sighed to yourself once you notice, hearing Yelena already giving you a lecture about how unsafe it was to leave windows open overnight.

Yelena is extremely protective of you, rightful so. If anybody laid a hand on you it was off with their head, no questions asked. You loved and but also struggled with that side of Yelena, sometimes whenever Kate would drag the two of you out for some fun and you got some unwanted attention, Yelena was there, standing beside you with looks that could kill. You had to tell everything was okay and that there was no need to be so headstrong.

Throwing out the empty take out boxes, you made yourself a coffee and showered only to get into a fresh set of PJs. Bored soon kicked in after you finished the episodes you hadn’t seen. With a sigh and a scan around the living room you randomly decided to rearrange the furniture, this was something you did often, and it would always leave Yelena stubbing her toe as she tried to make her way to the bedroom.

Before you knew it, dinner time creeped around. By now, you’ve rearranged the entire apartment almost then decided you hated the new look and moved everything back. Take out for dinner once again, ordering a little extra than you normally would just so you could have leftovers tomorrow. Your phone rang as you waited for the delivery of your food to arrive, with a smile you answered happily. “Elena!” you spoke.

“Hey lyubov'” Yelena’s voice made you smile wider.

“How’s the mission?” you asked, trying to cover the slight clinginess you had for Yelena.

“I want it to be over sooner but it’s looking like I’ll be here for the whole week” Yelena explained. You sighed to yourself knowing you still had 6 days without her. “You haven’t rearranged the apartment again have you detka?” she added.

“No? of course not, I’d never do such a thing” you said in a playful tone.

“Detka we spoke about this” Yelena chuckled.

“Okay but I moved everything back to it’s original place because I hated the new look” you argued.

“So you wasted the whole day moving our apartment around just to put it all back to how it was?”

“Don’t act surprised, I was and still am extremely bored. I’ve already caught up on all my shows and I’m struggling to find a decent movie to watch and I’m pretty sure that it’s suppose to rain all through the week so I’m basically house bound and you’re not here sooooo” you blabbered.

“Why don’t you get Kate over? Have a sleepover party or whatever it is she’s tried to get me to do”

“You’d love our little parties, give them a chance one day”

“Yeah detka, I love you but I don’t want any vegetables covering my eyes while you pluck hair from my eyebrows” Yelena laughed to at the idea.

“One day my love, it’ll happen one day!” you replied.

“I’m sorry to keep this short little lyubov' but I have to go, I just wanted to call and make sure you were okay”

“It’s okay baby, my dinner is about to arrive anyways” you played off your disappointment.

“Promise to close the damn window before you go to bed?”

“Ho-“ you foze, looking at the still opened winow “how did you know?”

“It’s you”

“Fair!”

“I love you, I’ll call again whenever I can”

“I love you too” you smiled before hearing the sound of her ending the call. You sighed and placed your phone on the coffee table in front of you, clicking through the Netflix suggestions before hearing a knock on the door. Your food had finally arrived.

The rest of the week was about the same. You did some online shopping, read a book or two, watched a few too many movies, did a little spring cleaning of your wardrobe, Kate dragged you out of the apartment a couple of times for lunch or a morning jog but you hadn’t heard from Yelena. She was due home tomorrow afternoon, you made sure the apartment was fresh and clean, all the takeout boxes thrown away and the fridge stocked with new ingredients for when Yelena returned.

Sleeping was the worst part of Yelena being away. You barely slept and whenever you did, it was full of consistent moving around, huffing and puffing, throwing the covers off before pulling them back over your body, drinking half a bottle of water then the need to use the toilet was strong enough to wake you.

Tonight was the worst it’s been. Yelena’s perfume no longer lingered; her side of the bed left untouched while loud cracks of thunder stopped you from falling asleep. You hated when the thunder got louder, you tried to remember when Yelena would hold you extra tight whenever she was home and there was a thunderstorm. She’d whisper sweet nothings to you while you feel into slumber. But tonight? You were on your own. Laying on your side looking at the photo of you and Yelena that sat happily on your bedside table you whispered, wished she’d come home.

Yelena quietly unlocked the door to the apartment, placing her travel bag on the sofa before throwing her vest over the armrest. She shook her head as she saw you’d forgotten to close the window once again. She closed it without a sound before making her way to the bathroom and having a shower. The sound of the thunderstorm drained out any sounds as you tossed and turned in your sleep, ignoring the thunder so you could sleep.

Yelena smiled softly to herself as she stood in the door way of the bedroom wrapped in a towel watching you trying to make yourself comfortable. She grabbed some fresh PJs, the time on the antilog clock on her beside table reading “3:48am” when slid into bed. You felt her wrap an arm around you and pull her close into her.

“El…Elena?” you questioned tiredly.

“Shhh detka, go back to sleep” she whispered, kissing the back of your neck softly.

“You’re home” you mumbled, sinking into her hold. She hushed you once more as you placed your hand on the arm she had wrapped around you. “I’m here printsessa” she whispered before the two of you fell asleep.

ten books 2 know me!

starting with this one because this WAS my childhood i was. i never read percy jackson never read twilight read [redacted] and it wasnt even good but my dad thought id like these so he bought me the first skulduggery pleasant one day...oh man oh boy...these were. i was eight queuing up outside a whsmith with a schoolbag full of books for the author's booksigning...also he was so nice ta derek x

-> giovanni's room, james baldwin.

cannot get into this too much before i start wailing and biting and stuff but well. giovanni's room is my favourite book of all time i read most of it. last year in june laying on brighton beach while the sun was going down and i have never recovered from and will you bring me home again / yes. i'll bring you home again since and fear i never will. also! first james baldwin book i read who has come to be an author whose writing style i adore and carry in my mind whenever i try to write something myself.

not the first book i ever cried at but. first book i ever experienced disgusting full body sobs while reading and fierce competitor also for. my favourite book. had to reread so much of those final pages because i couldnt concentrate with all the crying and after that i am so excited to never have to experience the physical chest-aching worry that i did for the duration of reading this. also i think the very quiet way love is written here through. very trivial small things is something i loved very much and that has stayed with me!

read this when i was about eleven, and then again a few weeks ago with my mum (whose favourite book it is) and it was still so. absolutely sickening i just think its excellent xx and without it we wouldn't have kate bush's 1978 single wuthering heights so xx think on that xx

-> the autobiography of malcom x, alex haley.

when i was a child my younger sister joined a sunday league football team and my dad used to give her a tenner every time she scored a goal. to even things out since i refused to get up at the arsecrack of dawn to contract hypothermia on a frozen football pitch, he started giving me books exclusively on malcolm x to read and would give me a tenner every time i finished one. this one was the first i read and was indeed the first book that ever made me cry at the end xx

so many of these are recent reads because it was only jan 2022 that i made a genuine effort to get back into reading for leisure and mbf is no different but well. the way friendship is written here is just unhinged and incredible and the series in general so far has been. there is nothing like it i fear

-> macbeth, william shakespeare.

okay i know i know but. when you are studying it in englit class for your gcse it might as well be a book innit. anyway of all the texts i did for english both at gcse + a level macbeth is still my favourite and probably the most effort i ever put into an english essay. special shoutout to frankenstein which i can enjoy in hindsight but unfortunately it fucked me on the exam so out of bitterness it doesnt get a place here x

-> the secret history, donna tartt.

i did inhale this book but also it gets a place purely for being my first exposure to donna tartt's writing and style in general which is so very distinctive and has. undoubtedly had an effect on me for better or for worse we shall one day see but for now. who can say!

it is a little pamphlet of a book at eighty six pages but. i read it just over a month ago and havent properly stopped thinking about it since it was just everything quiet + mundane + understated that makes my brain start sparking and whirring and. im bringing it on holiday in the summer so i can read it again in the appropriate season xx

#also it doesnt quite earn a place but the enemy series by charlie higson? no one ever seemed to read those but that was my fucking last of #us. that was my mazerunner. that was my dystopian YA (bar the hunger games okay yeah i was a hunger games girl wasnt everyone)#considered putting the beatles in their generation on here but managed to avoid it thank god. also no future by matthew worley #which was a dense slog into british punk as a politics and youth subculture but also well i learned a lot about my favourite topic #tag game #reading tag #will b fun to see how i would do this a little while on from now. like what maintains its spot + what gets bumped n stuff
