freshlycutgrass's exam blog: days 2 & 3 bc i totally did some work yesterday...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi! I'm writing this the day before my exams start - eek!!
I've had a burst of motivation to study today, but only after I had cleaned and rearranged my desk. It was helpful procrastination I swear !! Because now I can have enough room on my desk to write stuff and use a textbook, rather than having to have the textbook on my lap or something.
Today I've gotten a lot done and I feel pretty much as ready as I can be for tomorrow. I've gotten my exam pencil case ready (pencils, black pens, ruler, rubber/sharpener, calculator, emotional support frog, highlighters...)
Today I've gotten a lot done and I feel pretty much as ready as I can be for tomorrow. I've gotten my exam pencil case ready (pencils, black pens, ruler, rubber/sharpener, calculator, emotional support frog, highlighters...)
For the rest of today I'm going to continue with my to-do list - it was the first one I'd made in months !!!!!!! Which makes me very happy because I haven't been able to study / do literally anything productive over the last fiveish months because of my mental health (actually, this time, not like above lol) but I've been back to working like I used to! I've been watching rumplestudy's co-working stream on twits (rlly recommend!), making a todo list (and actually doing it), taking healthy breaks, and altogether managing to balance listening to myself and my body with doing the work I need to do!
Tumblr media
I don't feel as nervous for my actual IB exams as I did for my mock exams, though maybe that'll change tomorrow morning lol.
I'll update tomorrow with how my first exam went!

tips for stem majors in math and science courses (spoonie + neurodivergent friendly)
hi y’all! my nameis lila and i’m a 28 year old physics and anthropology major who’s about 2 years through college (in the US)! as we’re coming up on the start of the fall ‘23 college semester, i thought i might share some really solid hacks for fellow STEM students taking science and/or math courses that i’ve basically built my college academic career on. and! these study tips are spoonie and adhd friendly! as a matter of fact, a lot of these are tips/methods that specifically work for me as a neurodivergent spoonie (i have pretty severe adhd, as well as POTS and ME/CFS), but that i think non-disabled/non-spoonie and/or neurotypical students could also benefit from using! so with out any further ado, here are my 7 tried and true study hacks for college math and science classes…
1) discover your learning style and tailor your studying towards leveraging it.
you’ve probably heard of visual, audio, and kinesthetic learning styles, but did you now there’s actually way more learning styles than just those three? i’m personally a “social learner,” meaning i learn best through discussion and socialization with 1+ other people to interact with. this could look like teaching other classmates concepts and methods that we’ve learned or discussing ideas with classmates and/or professors until i fully understand the concepts at play and how they connect and can reflect them in performing analysis and application, etc. honestly, figuring out my learning style was hands down one of the most helpful things i’ve done in college. it has allowed me to choose professors who i will mesh better with in terms of how they teach, as well as to adapt materials and methods to my style of learning in order to master them quicker and more effectively.
2) rewrite your notes after lecture, for the love of god.
this tip actually comes from my high school IB Math HL teacher, who told me to do this when i originally left high school for college. even if you think you’ve mastered the basics of the topic covered during the lecture, rewriting those notes after lecture helps really hammer in the knowledge that you’ve already established and also helps to get the wheels turning on pieces of information you might have less of a grasp on. try tp set aside at least 30 - 40 minutes after class to just rewrite your notes and try to really digest the information.
3) body doubling is one of the most beneficial things ever to be invented even if you’re not adhd, and i WILL die on that hill, thank you very much.
“body doubling” or “having an accountabilibuddy” are interchangeable terms in the adhd community that mean you have one or more consistent study buddy/buddies who you do all the homework and/or studying with in person on a regular basis, even if you’re just working next to each other in total silence. this does a couple of things. first off, it forces homework/assignments/studying to become a concrete social obligation you need to regularly show up for, rather than a nebulous obligation based on an invisible deadline. second off, it gives you 1+ partners to work out your problems concerning course topics with. third off, it allows you to build a network of peers where you feel comfortable helping each other with course material (this is especially great because it’s likely you and your classmates have different strengths regarding course content). tbh, body doubling is the other method that i, personally, have found most useful in college and i highly recommend trying it, even if you don’t have adhd.
4) teach others/your classmates the analysis and application methods you’ve learned, even if those methods aren’t 100% solidified for you (trust me on this).
the goal of stem courses is never memorization, but rather being able to understand a topic well enough to analyze a similar situation and apply the what you’ve learned creatively. this is where teaching others comes in. in order to teach others a concept and its related analysis and application well, you have to have at least a fraction of a decent understanding of these things yourself, and, further, often time in teaching these things you also learn to grasp the concepts/aanalysis/applications even better than you did before with each new teaching session. basically: teaching others is a creative way of also teaching yourself. you get the benefits of repetition, of thinking about a concept/technique/analysis and application in a new way, and of getting to apply the concept/technique/analysis and applicatioin to a new scenario each time. plus, you’ll typically make friends quickly in the process! there’s really no downside to this tip imo ;-)
5) utilize your college’s tutoring center/program(s), even when you don’t think you need to.
usually colleges have either set up a general “tutoring center,” on campus where you can find tutors for all different kinds of topics and courses available during regular hours for walk-in sessions and/or appointments free of charge or departments will hold regular weekly (or twice weekly) free on-campus tutoring sessions for specific courses. regardless of which of these options your college has, i highly recommend attending at least one tutoring session/appointment (ideally with the same tutor if/when you eventually find one you click with) every single week, even when you don’t feel like you’re struggling with the topic(s) covered in that week’s lecture. this will help you review topics and techniques covered in lecture, deepen your understanding of them, and, if nothing else, it’s an excuse to get homework out of the way while having someone else there who can help you if/when you get stuck. attending at least one session weekly also helps you get into a habit and routine of keeping up with your assignments, so you’re not left scrambling at the last minute before they’re due.
6) if you have accommodations, request access to record lectures. if you do not have accommodations, ask your professor if you are allowed to record lectures. IF YOU RECORD LECTURES, DO NOT FORGET TO REVIEW THEM!
okay, so first up for my fellow spoonies and neurodivergent peeps: when you apply for/renew your accommodations, make sure that “recordinng lectures” is on your MOA (memorandum of accommodations), because so long as it is, your professors legally cannot deny you permission to record lectures without risk of themself and the college being sued for an ADA violation. also, make friends with a classmate and ask them to record lectures and send them to you if/when you are absent (let the professor know that you’ve asked this classmate to record and send you the lecture if you are absent)
now, if you aren’t disabled, a spoonie, and/or neurodivergent, you aren’t guaranteed permission to record lectures. however. ask the professor if you can have their permission to audio record lectures (be sure to also let them know that such a recording would be for personal use only and that you don’t plan on distributing the recordings). i’ve found that many professors don’t mind you having an audio recording.
even if you aren’t an audible learner it can be really useful to have these recordings to review at a later point. oftentimes reviewing lecture recordings can be useful if you glazed over and missed a section of the lecture and/or if you can’t remember what a professor taught during a section of a lecture.
7) last but not least, on a related note, if you have accommodations, also request access to your professor’s lecture notes. if you don’t have accommodations, check if your professor posts their lecture notes for students to use.
having your professor’s notes can be extremely useful for review purposes, but they can also help you understand where your professor is going with course content and what they want to stress as important.

Footnotes at the bottom!
.
“Iewuukaubweenz,” said Danny, smiling toothily at the tour guide.
“What was that?” she asked.  “I wasn’t quite able to make it out.”
“Iewuukaubweenz(1),” repeated Danny.
“Ignore my brother,” said Jazz.  “It means good morning in one of the languages he’s studying.”
“Oh,” said the guide, smiling, “that’s wonderful.  Preparing for college?”
“It’s just a hobby,” said Danny.
“What language is it?”
“Oiwawu uno Yinis(2).”
“Well, it’s lovely.  Ah, I think that must be everyone…”  The guide stepped away and started to do a headcount.
“Don’t make me regret bringing you,” said Jazz.
“Oh, you should have done that long ago, nu(3).”
“Nuuhuueiwee, uu iiuuni yinis, uzue(4)!” snapped Jazz.
“Your pronunciation is a little off, there.  ‘Don’t forget’ should be ‘nuuheiwee,’ since ‘eiwee’ starts with a vowel.”
“You’re insufferable.”
“Wibli i iiuuni eulmau noo iitsetu(5)!”
Jazz groaned.  “Please, just don’t scare off any of my potential future classmates.”
“I make no promises.”
“Danny.”
“I won’t do anything on purpose,” said Danny.  As annoyed as he was to be here, he didn’t want to tank Jazz’s social life from the start.  “But you know how things are.”
“Yeah, I know.  Uu iiuuni(6).  But you could be helpful, too.”
“That sounds like a jinx, honestly.”
“Danny.”
“If you look at it from a certain perspective, it’s like I’m helping them.”  And Jazz, too, because most people would run for the hills upon being presented with the elder Fentons.  Crummy friend material, if you asked him.  Which people usually didn’t.
Jazz gave him a look.  It was a remarkably effective look.  He crumbled.
“Fine.  What do you want me to do?”
“Well,” said Jazz, “when people ask why you’re here, I want you to let me explain that you speak over a dozen languages fluently and that I brought you here so you can look at the language, anthropology, and archaeology options.”
“But,” said Danny, “that is why you… Oh.”
“Honesty is sometimes the best policy.”
Danny squinted at her.
“Look, you’re the one going around showing off ghost speak.  At least stick to Latin or something?”
“Ihi Yinis nyoobli wutish(7)!”
“And maybe stick to English unless someone asks?  Maybe?  Like, it’s kind of weird when someone who isn’t, you know, Spanish or Mexican or something starts a conversation off with hola, right?”
“I guess.  But I am a native speaker of Yinis.”
“Danny.  You have a utwueeeweustee(8).”
“Your pronunciation is still off.”
“Give me a break, here, I’m not sure if you can pronounce things in Yinis correctly unless you’re a native speaker.”
“Native speaker?” asked a young man behind who had crept up behind them.  “What are you a native speaker of, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“Oh, it’s Danny that’s the native speaker,” said Jazz, spots of color high in her cheeks.  “My little brother.  I’m hoping he’ll be interested in some of the language programs here at the university, if he gets to see them.”
“The language is super rare, though.  Not very many people speak it at all.”  Well, all of the dead, but that didn’t count.
“Mind saying a few words to me?  I’m a bit of a language buff myself.  Maybe I can guess it.”
“Noo iileihush hii u ib eunti aawee(9).”
“Yinis!  Noo ieku iiiwoo, noo u hib euwi einu ihwuu muueu(10).”
Danny’s mouth fell open.  A sideling look at Jazz revealed that she, too, was slack-jawed.
“Hii huuyeu yihi, iim.  Wuicheuu(11).”
“Ur hii(12)!” exclaimed Danny.
The tour guide clapped her hands together.  “Now that you’ve all got a moment to get to know one another, let’s start!”
.
Danny and Jazz kept an eye on the young man all through the tour.  Neither of them were quite sure what to do with the fact that a… Ghost?  Human?  Someone who knew how to speak ghost was here, at the college with them.
“All right!” said the guide, “here’s the student union and our food court!  Let’s meet back here for the second half of the tour in one hour!  Okay!”
Everyone nodded, murmured, or cheered their assent, and scattered.  Danny and Jazz made a beeline for the maybe-ghost.  He had staked out a lonely table in the corner, as if waiting for them.
… Actually, that was probably accurate.
Jazz slid into the seat right in front of the maybe-ghost.  “Before you two start talking, I want you to know I’m not fluent.”
“Of course not,” said the young man, “I wouldn’t expect a winoo(13) to be.”
“So you are…?” Jazz said.
“You can call me Roman,” he said.  “But, for what you were actually trying to ask, yes, I am a ghost.”
“Your disguise is really good,” muttered Danny.
“Yet not, I think, better than yours.  It’s practice.  I’ve been in academia for a while.”
Jazz sharpened.  “As a student?  Isn’t that a bit unethical, considering that there are a limited number of admissions every year?”
Roman laughed.  “Not really.  I’m a ghost student, so to speak.  I don’t really show up anywhere officially, people just remember that I’m where I’m supposed to be.”
So, unethical but in an entirely different way.  “You just… go to school?” asked Danny.  “That’s what you do with your… life?”
“What’s better than learning forever?” asked Roman with a shrug.  “They say you’re not really dead until you stop doing that, and intend to demonstrate that idiom.  I do move around, though.  This is my first time at this university.  But speaking of that…  You must be a lover of knowledge as well, to scout out this place for your afterlife.”
“It’s not like that.  I’m just here because of Jazz.”
“You really should think about what you want to do when you graduate, though.”
Roman cleared his throat.  “As presumptuous as it may be… If you do determine to further your education, I will be here for the next several years.”  He reached into his vest-pocket and pulled out a small, pale green business card.  “I can show you the tricks of the trade.  How to blend in, even if you look, and feel, out of place.”
“Go ahead and take it, Danny,” said Jazz, nudging him.
“I don’t know,” said Danny.  “It’s not really…”
“You can always throw it away later,” said Roman.
“Alright,” said Danny, plucking it out of the ghost’s hand.
“Excellent.  Now that we have that out of the way, what major are you taking, Miss…?”
Jazz blushed.  “I’m Jazz.  Psychology and pre-med.”
“Hm.  I was planning on sociology this year, but that’s not set in stone.”
Danny stood up.  “I’m going to go buy lunch.”
He did not need to watch Jazz flirt with a ghost.  Another ghost.  Jazz… seemed to only flirt with ghosts.  And guys like Spike.
Oh, ew, Danny did not need to know about his sister’s preferences.
Did Mountain Dew work as brain bleach?  Yuck.
Or, as ghosts would say it, nuekawuhuu(14).
1 - Good morning.
2 - The language of Yinis (also called Old High Spirit)
3 - Sister
4 - Don’t forget, I know Old High Spirit, too!
5 - Now you know how I feel!
6 - I know.
7 - But Old High Spirit is fun!
8 - Secret identity
9 - I doubt you have heard this one
10 - Old High Spirit!  I must say, I have not heard that in many years.
11 - You don’t look dead, though.  Very impressive.
12 - Neither do you!
13 - Human
14 - Gross

A GUIDE ON HOW TO STUDY EFFICIENTLY
Tumblr media
Hey girls!! I know a lot of us are on break, whether that be in high school, college or university, so I figured I could maybe show you guys some tips and tricks that have helped me throughout my studies…
A little bit about my educational background:
-In high school, I was part of an IB school (the girls that know the struggle, know the struggle). If you don’t know what that is, it’s essentially a program designed to help students get a better understanding of the world and how it works. We basically do the regular high school program + the IB one, so it’s extra workload, but we do get an additional diploma at the end of our studies!
-I am now in college, studying psychology and I was recently invited to join the honors roll for my next semester (super excited about that!!). I absolutely love it and i’ve also gotten the opportunity to study other subjects such as anthropology, world history, art history, etc.
1. LEARNING WHAT TO PRIORITIZE
My biggest weakness throughout my first semester of college was balancing my workload and my social activities. Often times, I would either only do school work for weeks and not go out or simply go out until very late on school nights and get nothing done. Both scenarios are just as negative. I would be drained on the inside, and simply become exhausted by minimal activities. What helped me personally was establishing a clear schedule, which I know isn’t ideal for everyone as we all have differing schedules, but trust me, having that base helps A LOT.
2. SETTING REMINDERS TO STUDY
I dont know if this was just me, but in high school, I would constantly fall asleep and take naps after school. This would result in me totally forgetting I had to study when I woke up… Setting up reminders on my phone helped me remember what I had to do. I also included little motivational messages to keep me inspired to work.
3. KNOWING WHEN TO PUT THE BOOK DOWN
Girls, I know how hard it is sometimes to give yourself grace and put your study books down, especially when there’s a big test coming up. However, it has been proven that over reading or over studying actually has negative effects on your learning/memory. Stressing yourself out will do nothing but put you in a negative state, which is not what you want going into that exam. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, put the book down for 15 minutes and go do something that puts you at peace. Me personally, I make myself a cup of peppermint tea and put on my favorite show.
4. HAVING A STUDY METHOD THAT WORKS FOR YOU
There are many different types of study methods, so I’m not gonna tell you which one you should do as we are all different, but finding the one that works for you does ALL the difference. The way I study is very simple, I establish a game plan (I list everything I want to complete) and I give myself a time frame to complete it. The time frames are always very realistic for me, so I never have to stress about not having enough time. For each “task” I complete, I allow myself a 15-20 minute break and I study for no more than 3 hours at a time.
5. NEVER PUT STUDYING BEHIND
I am such a procrastinator, but I had to learn very quickly, especially in college, that this was not possible. The work load is so much more charged and I simply cannot get away with studying last minute. If you’re in high school, start implementing healthy study habits now, so that once you reach college, you’re already used to studying the right way (learn from me hahaha)!
I am 100% sure that there are more I’m forgetting, but these are the main ones I implement in order to keep a high average and a healthy school/social life :) I know these are very basic and you’ve probably heard of them before but I still think it’s important we talk about them to remind ourselves on what to do! If you would like more of this type of content please let me know!! My next posts will be much more light though dont worry, we are still on winter break after all ;))
so much love,
a girl unfiltered 💋

[ad_1] Newswise — An international research study led by the University of Vienna (Austria) and the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE) in Barcelona (Spain), recently published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution, provides a better insight into the evolutionary history of gorillas. Martin Kuhlwilm, scientist at the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology at the University of Vienna, and Harvinder Pawar, PhD student and Tomas Marques-Bonet, ICREA Research Professor at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE), a research centre of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), in collaboration with colleagues at the Sanger Institute, analysed the genomes of gorillas using modern statistical methods, including neural networks. The team discovered a gene flow event in this species of apes, which is closely related to humans, from an already extinct lineage to gorillas living today. This is similar to how modern humans and bonobos have preserved genes from extinct groups, which can still be found in our genomes.Humans and gorillas share an exciting aspect in common: In both species, their DNA was mixed during evolution by mating with individuals from other groups which are already extinct today – and for this reason there was an introgression of genes from one group to another. In the course of evolutionary history, modern humans have exchanged genes with Neanderthals and Denisovans. Their legacy can still be found in the genome of many humans nowadays. There are few similar studies addressing this question in great apes, especially gorillas, because there are only a few fossils of our close living relatives, unlike the Homo sapiens, from which ancient DNA could be extracted for analysis. Therefore, the genomes of individuals living today are the only way to reconstruct their evolutionary history, which is of particular importance, because gorillas are threatened with extinction in the wild.Gene flow from ghost population provides new insights into evolutionary historyGorillas are composed of two species (western and eastern gorillas), each of which has two subspecies: Western gorillas include the western lowland gorillas and the cross river gorillas, while eastern gorillas include the eastern lowland gorillas and the closely related mountain gorillas. In the current study, the leading teams of Tomas Marques-Bonet at the IBE and Martin Kuhlwilm at the University of Vienna, with collaboration of Chris Tyler-Smith and Yali Xue, from the Sanger Institute, analysed whole genomes of individuals from all four subspecies, including newly sequenced mountain gorilla genomes from Bwindi National Park in Uganda, one of only two places where the few remaining mountain gorillas can be found. Innovative statistical methods including the integration of neural networks revealed a surprising result: 40,000 years ago, genes were exchanged between a now-extinct gorilla ghost population and the common ancestor of the eastern lowland gorillas and the mountain gorillas. The scientist Martin Kuhlwilm explains, "Up to 3 % of the genome of today’s eastern gorillas includes remains of genes from this ghost population, which separated from the common ancestors of all gorillas more than 3 million years ago." And he continues, "On the other hand, we were not able to identify any of these DNA segments in the western gorillas."Gene flow from ghost population may affect gene functionsThe international team was able to impress that the genetic input of already extinct ancestors is not only of interest in evolutionary history but can also have functional effects on present-day species. They demonstrated this with an example: The researchers found that a gene encoding a bitter taste receptor was introduced from the ghost population into today’s eastern lowland gorillas and mountain gorillas – and may have afterwards been under positive selection. This comes in handy for today’s animals, because this kind of taste receptors probably helps avoid eating poisonous (and bitter-tasting) food.Another interesting result from the analysis is that the eastern gorillas sustain a very small amount of DNA from the ghost population on their X chromosome. Therefore, it seems to be subject to negative selection, which can also be observed in humans and other species. One possible reason for this is that this chromosome exists only in one copy in male individuals, unlike the other chromosomes, and this is why harmful mutations may have a stronger effect. Tomas Marques-Bonet, also a professor of Genetics at the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences (MELIS) at UPF says, "Our study gives us a better insight into the evolutionary history of gorillas and provides a valuable contribution to help us better understand which effects gene flows from extinct populations can have on current populations." "Evolutionary genetics is important", adds Harvinder Pawar, first author of the study, "so that we can learn more about what distinguishes us humans from other apes." window.fbAsyncInit = function () FB.init( appId: '890013651056181', xfbml: true, version: 'v2.2' ); ; (function (d, s, id) var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = " fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); (document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); [ad_2]

With two weeks left until school starts again, I've begun doing the school stuff that I should have finished by now...
Anthropology IA (Standard Level) is going slowly atm but it's pretty much the only piece of coursework that I still need to do a first draft of!
How are y'all doing? x
