The Prank
Yoko and Bianca sneak into Enid and Wednesday’s room.
Bianca: God, you’re such a child. You’re like a hundred years old but you still act like you’re ten.
Yoko: Are you going to complain all day or are you going to help me?
Bianca: Fuck, whatever. What are we doing?
Yoko: Where does she keep her paper for her typewriter? I thought maybe I could take-
The two girls can hear the Ravenette and Werewolf running through the hall.
Bianca: Shit, we gotta go.
Yoko: Fuck. Uh- Under the bed!
Yoko and Bianca scurry under Wednesday’s bed and hide behind her bags.
The door swings open with Enid and Wednesday passionately making out. Enid shuts the door with her foot and picks up Wednesday by the waist.
Enid: Fuck we don’t have much time. Divina’s dorm party is in four hours.
Wednesday: Then let’s not waste a second.
Enid continues to kiss Wednesday and carry her to her bed. The bed that Yoko and Bianca are of course hiding under. Wednesday lies on her back when Enid jumps on top of her.
Enid: You’re mine, Mi Amor.
Wednesday: Take me, Mon Coeur.
Yoko and Bianca didn’t have to wonder what was happening. When they heard the moans and the groans and the clothes fall to the floor, they knew they fucked up big time.
Bianca: *covering her ears* Oh god, I forgot how loud Enid can be.
Yoko: Jesus Christ. Please tell me this’ll end fast.
-Three and a half hours later-
Enid orgasms for the fifth time and screams even louder than before. She lies beside Wednesday, knocking out immediately. Wednesday hugs her and kisses her before also drifting into sleep.
When Yoko and Bianca heard the two snore, they quickly and quietly come out from under the bed and escape through the window.
The two made it to the fountain where they see Divina reading.
Divina: Hey, where the hell were you guys? I called like a hundred times? Where did you go?
The two girls look distraught. They looked at each other and then looked at Divina.
Yoko: Nothing. I think I’m just gonna go for a swim.
Bianca: Yeah and I think I need to down a large cup of blood.
The two walk away in different directions.

Hey so I just found your account and omg?? it's literally so amazing 😭✋
Anyways-I was just looking through a bunch of the twist monster au headcannons/stories, and I thought of a scenario that could be done!
Basically the cast reacting to gender neutral or female reader/yuu acting stuff out in their book they are reading like poses, dialogue, just genuine reactions to the text itself
ex. Throwing the book across the room and them being genuinely concerned that something happened bc reader is just staring off into space or cursing but what actually happened was either a character died/did something embarrassing/the mc and love interest finally kiss
Anyways that's all I had in mind hope you have a good day/night! <3
Omg thank you! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the content! QvQ
Ah, books. Such a wonderful creation humans made to fill us with raw, pure emotion or shattering our hearts and souls into a million tiny pieces—only for us to read it again and again! Don’t you just love those moments as a reader? UvU
Except for cliffhangers. Readers have a love/hate relationship with it, writers adore cliffhangers! ÒvÓ
So, what happens if we take a bookreader!Yuu (they/them) and throw them into Twisted Monsterland where even the history books read like a world guide/omnibus to a game or TV series? Oh, and I took a bit of inspiration from a Disney princess comic and a Bill Watterson “Calvin and Hobbes” comic for two of these scenarios. 😂
/-----------/
“Jeez, you sure you’ve got enough books, Yuu?”
“The librarian wouldn’t let me check out more than ten at a time,” Yuu replied, their backpack and arms filled with thick books. “Wish I could’ve gotten ten more at least, but thisll do for now.”
“Are you sure you can even read all those before next semester?” Deuce asked in concern. “Those look pretty…dense.”
“Oh, I’ll be done in a week. Maybe a week and a half if we get a lot of homework.”
“Funya?! You gotta be kidding me!” Grim said. “Can humans read that fast?”
“Not everyone. Some people are slow readers, but that’s okay since they enjoy it at their own pace while I enjoy it at mine. Only problem for me is choosing which one of these I want to read first!”
/Later that night/
“Yuu? It’s time to eat!” Grim called out. Silence greeted him as he stared at Yuu, who was sitting on the couch with their face practically buried in a book. Frowning, the chimera padded over to the couch and repeated, “Yuu! I’m hungry!”
Still the human didn’t seem to respond, their shoulders hunching as they turned the page.
“Yuu? Yuu!” Huffing, Grim crossed his arms as he glared up at them. “You’ve been reading for the past three hours! How much longer are you gonna read that book?”
“What’s going on, pal?” one of the ghosts asked as the trio appeared.
Gesturing his paws at Yuu, he said, “They’ve been reading ever since we got back from the library today, and now they’re not reactin’ to me. It’s dinner time and they haven’t made any food yet!”
Before anyone could even think of what to say, a loud, shrill squeal filled the dorm.
“Eeeeeee!!!” Yuu squealed, a huge grin on their face as they flopped to the side and kicked their legs like a nervous rabbit while holding the book against their chest. “Omg it happened, it happened!!”
“Mrah!? What?! What happened?!” Grim yelled, wings flared out defensively while his fur bristled. “Why are you yelling!”
“My new OTP!! They finally kissed!!” Yuu said, their eyes wide as they rocked from side to side. “They kissed!! Yes!! Yesyesyesyesyessssss!!!”
“OTP? What’s an OTP??” one of the other ghosts asked.
“It’s what we like to call the ‘one true pairing’ in a story,” Yuu explained, a positively giddy expression on their face with eyes shining brighter than the stars as they struck a dramatic pose. “It’s two characters who vibe with each other on a level that you just can’t help but want them to be together—and the author brought these two together!! Yeeeeeeeee, I’m so happy!!”
“And loud,” Grim grumbled, paws clamped over his ears. “Why are you standing like that?”
“It’s how the main character professed their love for the other!”
“…are all humans as weird as you?”
“Trust me, there are people out there that are way crazier in their excitement than I am right now.”
“Really?!”
“Oh yeah. Don’t even get me started on the fanfics people write.”
“Fan…fics?”
“Oh, you sweet summer child…”
/Two days later/
“Heeeey, lil’ Shrimpy~!”
“Mm…”
“Eh…? Hey, Shrimp…why are you ignorin’ us? It’s not very nice.”
“Now, now, Floyd. One mustn’t interrupt a reader when they’re indulging in such a riveting story.”
“Shh,” Yuu muttered, their brow furrowed as they hunched closer to the book. “I’m at the best part!”
Floyd frowned as he laid his head on his arms, the basilisk slumping against the table. “Man, this is lame,” he said. “You promised to come play basketball with me today!”
“Once I finish this part, we can go do whatever you want, okay, Floyd?”
Jade hummed in amusement as he said, “A rather daring proposition you just offered, Yuu.”
“We have to do a buncha reading for class anyway,” Floyd said with a bored expression. “And Crabby and Mackerel said you finished two other books already, so what’s the point of thi-”
“AAAAIIIIIEEEEE!!?!?” Yuu shrieked, leaping out of their chair as Jade and Floyd recoiled in shock. Before the twins could react, Yuu had ducked back into their chair and pressed the book even closer to their face than before.
“…lemmie see that,” Floyd said, leaning over the table to grab it.
“No, no! It’s fine, go do something else!” Yuu said all too quickly, sinking even lower and turning away from Floyd’s reaching claws. “I think I heard Riddle in the hallway.”
“Lemmie see it!”
“No! You can’t read it!” Yuu cried out, bolting away from the table holding the book tight to their chest.
“Get back here, Shrimpy!”
“Noooo!!”
“Oh my,” Jade uttered, eyes wide for a moment before he chuckled. “Perhaps I should look into this book when they’ve finished it.”
/The next day/
“Oh no…oooh noooooo, I hate this so much!”
“Then why are you reading it?” Jamil asked, the naga curled around them. “If you don’t like it, just take it back to the library.”
“I can’t! It’s soooooo good!” Yuu said, practically throwing themselves backwards onto Jamil’s snake half with the book pressed against their face.
“Eh? But wait, you just said you hated it,” Kalim said in confusion.
“I hate it, but I love it so much,” Yuu told them with a whine, their head now touching the floor on the other side of Jamil’s snake body yet still draped over him like a cat. “This book will ruin your heart and shatter your soul into a million pieces!...you should read it too!”
“Given how dramatic you’re being, it might not be wise,” Jamil said with a sigh.
“Read it!”
“It’s okay, Yuu. We can read together! It’ll be more fun that way!”
“Kalim, no. You still need to study for the next potions exam.”
“Augh, I need someone to talk about this story with so we can lament in solidarity!”
“…have you been taking lessons from Rook lately?”
/Three days later/
“Um…is Yuu okay? They’re looking a little…tense.”
It had been several days since Yuu borrowed a stack of books, and already they had gone through nearly half of their hoard. Between classes and on breaks or after finishing tests, it wasn’t hard for students to notice the lone human with their nose between the pages of one book after the other. Even the researchers had taken note of Yuu’s behavior in between tests, making note of their expressions and how their body changes with each scene depicting their emotions. It was noteworthy how they reacted when a character in the story did something “cringeworthy and stupid” (as Yuu would explain when asked), it looked as though the human had swallowed a lemon.
At the moment they were sitting in Heartslabyul, yet another book in their arms as they sat on one side of the lounge. Cater had taken progression snapshots of Yuu’s body slowly curling into itself, eyes steadily growing wider and wider to the point it looked as though they’d bolt away in panic.
“They’re fine,” Grim told Trey as he munched on a snack. “They’ve been like this since they got all those books. That’s the pose they had last time when their Ohteevee smooched or somethin’.”
“Oh, you mean ‘OTP’, Grimmy,” Cater corrected with a smile. “That’s so cute! Our human has an OTP already~!”
“I’ve heard of hitting the books, but this is ridiculous,” Ace commented with a sigh. “They’ve been reading so long that I forgot what half their face looks li-”
“GRAAAAH!!!!”
SLAM! Fwump!!
“Gyah!?” the boys yelped, everyone staring at Yuu as they sat on the couch with a dark scowl.
“Yo, what the heck? Why’d you throw the book like that?” Ace asked, pointing at the large tome on the other side of the couch now.
“Um…Yuu?” Deuce began when they didn’t respond. “Are…you okay?”
“……I’m mad,” came the response, Yuu’s expression growing more annoyed as they stared off into space.
“About what?” Riddle asked in surprise.
Yuu’s gaze turned to the discarded book, their expression as though they had been betrayed by a trusted friend as they said, “Because my favorite character died, and I refuse to read how the book ends when there’s literally two freaking pages left! That’s not enough space to bring them back in a satisfying way!!”
“Y…you’ve gotta be kidding me,” Ace grumbled with a sigh. “That big of a reaction just because a fictional character was killed off?”
“You weren’t there to see the struggles they went through! I saw them change from an annoying bully into a fully developed and vulnerable character who wanted to take charge of their life—and the author killed them off!” Jumping to their feet, Yuu marched towards Ace and Deuce’s room where they’d left their stuff and said, “Where’s my notebook? I need to fix this!”
“What are you gonna do?” Grim called out.
“Write a fanfic, because my scrunkly deserves to be happy!”
“Huh? Scrunkly??”
/Final day/
“Oh, Great Seven…what happened in your book this time?” Vil asked with a sigh.
Yuu sniffled as they tried to dry their tears, though it was difficult as more continued to flow down their cheeks. “I…I just finished my last book,” they said, their voice cracking a little with emotion as Grim pat their arm reassuringly.
“All ten books in a week?” Vil said in surprise. “That’s…impressive. Even so, why are you so upset? Was the story that horrible?”
“No…it…it…it was too good!” Yuu cried out, clutching the book so tight that their knuckles turned white as the tears flowed freely now.
“Ah…such pure, raw human emotion,” Rook crooned. “To express it so freely without fear…beaute!”
“Was the book really that good?” Epel asked.
“Yes!” Yuu wailed. “Now that it’s over, I…I don’t know what to do with myself now…”
Peering at the title, Vil gave a thoughtful hum and said, “Oh, that story. I hear there is supposed to be a spin-off book series. The first one should have released just the other day.”
“Really?!”
“Mrrr…now you’ve done it,” Grim grumbled with a sigh. “Here we go again.”

"Darned Germs" (803 w.c)
SWK, Macaque, and Spider Queen x GN!Sick!Reader
Romantic Oneshot
Pronouns: you/yours
CW: sickness, mentions of food/eating, a single joke about eating people
Tumblr media
“Gods, you’re burning up!”
Macaque took the thermometer from you with wide eyes. You could really only nod, and even then it was hard to really move. You were lying in his bed, since you had spent the night after watching movies with him, however you awoke feeling as if you were on fire. He had gotten you set up with plenty of fluids and an ice pack on your forehead, but it wasn’t helping as much as he had hoped. He took out his phone, typing up some messages.
“What’re you doing?” You asked, your words slurring. His tail was swishing as his expression was concerned.
“I’m calling in the big guns.”
Not even half an hour later, your other two partners appeared. Wukong came in the door first, and held it open as Spider Queen came in with some grocery bags. Macaque helped to take their coats.
“Queenie, I told you, I had food covered.” He protested, raising an eyebrow at how much she was actually carrying. She shook her head, stepping into the apartment’s kitchen and opening the fridge. It was nearly barren, save for some leftover takeout and a single plum.
“Yes, because this’ll be enough to nurse a whole army back to health. Gimme time, and I’ll have just the remedy for this blasted fever,” she tied all her dark hair back into a bun and then moved past the monkeys to where you were. Upon seeing you, it was like she was going full mom-mode—the term Wukong had coined after she had made a habit of fretting over you, him, and Macaque on a normal basis. “Oh, sweetheart, look at you!”
“Hi Queenie…” you reached out to her and she enveloped you in a hug.
“How’d this happen? Who was so cruel to pass on these germs to you?!”
“I dunno,” you spoke into her chest. Even though you loved the attention, you were still very warm. She pressed the back of her hand to your forehead. “But I’m really tired…”
“That’s okay. You just lay back while I go make something to help, alright? No work, no nothin’ until you’re better.” She gave the crown of your head a kiss before stepping out of the bedroom to go begin the meal. Wukong came in next, with Macaque trailing behind him.
“Hey, peaches. You okay?” He sat on the edge of the bed, leaning over and kissing your cheek.
“Not so much. I’m drinking water and stuff, but I still feel cruddy.” You said.
“Aw, well no worries! We’ll take care of you!” He reached into his own bag, that you didn’t even realize he’d brought in, and retrieved a stuffed bear. You happily accepted the plush, hugging it tightly.
“Thanks Wukong!! I love him!” You smiled. He smiled back. Him and Macaque settled onto the bed, making small talk. Every now and then they’d pause and remind you to drink water, before resuming and grooming each other a little bit. Eventually a wonderful smell wafted through the air. All three of you went to the bedroom doorway and looked toward the kitchen.
Queenie stood facing the stove, her sleeves rolled up and a hand on her hip as she stirred something in a pot. She taste tested some of it, before shaking her head and adding some herbs to the mixture.
Sensing the pairs of eyes on her, she turned her head, gaze softening as she saw you all looking toward her. She taste tested again, this time nodding, and then she motioned for you to come over. Wukong moved forward first, practically salivating, and Macaque rolled his eyes and scooped you up bridal style. He carried you over to his table, sitting you down and then going to get dishes.
Once everyone was set up at the table, the queen scooped some of the stew from the pot and into the bowls in front of you and the others.
“This recipe’s warded off sickness from me and my boys for ages,” the boys in question being her henchmen who she said were also her subjects. “So I want you two to eat it as well, just to be on the safe side.”
“Promise there’s no meat or people in it.” Wukong joked, remembering what her diet could consist of.
“Relax, I wouldn’t feed y’all that stuff! It’s just veggies and herbs. Now dig in!”
Indeed, you all ate as if your lives depended on it, but really, it was just that delicious. Macaque noticed you were tired after the fact, so he helped to set you up in his bed again, opting to sleep on his own couch. In the morning, you awoke and felt as if the fever had never even been there, snuggled up with a happy stomach and your new stuffed bear.

Healing (Anne Sallow x M!MC)
Tags: Fluff, Just overall wholesomeness, Sebastian being an overprotective bro
“Are you certain this’ll work?” Sebastian asked, his voice thick with anxiety. MC had given him at least twenty different variations of the same answer in the past half hour, but he supposed he couldn’t really blame the Sallow boy for being nervous; he would have likely felt the same in his position.
“I’m confident it will,” he assured him. “It’ll be different this time. I know how to use my ability now, after all.”
“I suppose that’s true,” Sebastian answered, before shaking his head. “It’s just so difficult to fathom… all of this. Knowing that there will finally be an end to her suffering. If this works, I owe you my life, MC.”
“Keep it,” MC chuckled. “You’ll have lots of catching up to do once Anne is able to live without pain.”
He was relieved to see a hint of a smile forming on Sebastian’s lips after all. Truthfully, now that they were coming up on Feldcroft, he couldn’t deny he felt the slightest bit nervous, if only for the massive pressure resting on his shoulders. He didn’t necessarily question his control over his ability, having dedicated himself to rigorous training with the help of Professor Fig to avoid Isadora’s missteps. Still, he was nevertheless terrified of disappointing the Sallows now that he had become their last hope.
Focus, he told himself as they approached the small cottage at the edge of the hamlet. Inner balance is the only way to heal her. You know this.
Before they could enter, the door swung open on its own and a bearded man stepped out, his face hardening as he saw them.
“Mr Sallow,” MC said politely, as he inclined his head.
“I want you to know that if it had been up to me, I would have put an end to this fool’s errand right now,” Solomon grunted. “Do you even know what you’re doing?”
MC noticed Sebastian clenching his fists. He gently touched his shoulder to calm him down before turning to the older man. “I am confident I can heal Anne, Mr Sallow,” he said, his voice lacking any suggestion of doubt. “She personally requested it, did she not?”
Solomon briefly clenched his jaw before he let out a deep sigh. “That she has. She’s waiting for you inside. But I’m warning you, if this somehow results in even more harm, I’m holding you responsible.”
“I will accept any and all responsibility,” MC answered. “May we enter now?”
For a moment it looked as if Solomon would keep blocking the doorway, but then he stepped aside to let them through. Any dispiritedness they might have felt from their chilly reception swiftly vanished when they finally saw Anne. Her face lit up at the sight of her brother, and she reached out for him as he ran up to her. “Sebastian!”
“How are you?” Sebastian asked, placing a hand on her shoulder as he kneeled next to her. “Are you comfortable?”
“Much more now that you’re here.” She nodded to MC. “Hello, MC.”
“It’s good to see you, Anne,” MC said with a gentle smile. He meant it; despite the dark lines under her eyes and the overall paleness of her face, she seemed more healthy than he’d ever seen her. He caught himself involuntarily thinking about the remarkable hidden beauty held by her features and quickly shook his head to regain focus.
“So…” Anne said, breaking the silence. “How does this work, exactly? Is there anything you need me to do?”
“I just want you to try to keep still and make yourself as comfortable as possible,” MC told her, before holding a short pause. “I will be honest with you, Anne, I know this will work, though I cannot guarantee it will be entirely painless. I will try my best, but –”
“I doubt it’ll be much worse than what I’ve already had to endure,” Anne said. “You… you can go ahead, I’ll manage.”
MC nodded, then turned to Sebastian, who was still holding onto his sister’s arm. “Sebastian, it’d be best if you took a step back. You know, as a precaution –”
“Yes… yes, of course.” He exchanged one more look with Anne, squeezing her shoulder. “I’ll be right here in the room with you.”
Anne smiled weakly, briefly touching his hand to reassure him. He withdrew, taking a deep breath as his gaze met MC’s. “Do what you must do.”
MC felt himself tensing up as he drew his wand, readying himself to channel his ancient magic. This was it, the moment of truth. If he couldn’t help her…
No, that was simply not possible. He would help her.
He furrowed his brow as he began, concentrating the surge of energy flowing up from his very core. He directed it into his wand, feeling his hand beginning to tremble as it transformed into a conduit. The world around him ceased to be one of images, instead morphing into a collection of colours; he saw Anne, a shade of bright red contained within a rim of blue light. He reached out, pushing into the red, sensing the pain emanating from her being. The sheer violence of it left him reeling for a minute, sharp needles puncturing every inch of his body, but he knew he had to reach further to be able to remove it. And so he clenched his teeth, pushing beyond the limits of his own mortal form; becoming one with her as he sensed her thoughts, her agony, her everything.
He could hear Sebastian shouting somewhere far away, but he wasn’t really listening to what he was saying. He wielded every bit of strength he had left to withdraw from Anne’s frail body, taking the pain with him, forcing it to assume a physical form. After the passage of what felt like hours, the room morphed back into shape. He saw Anne, slightly hunched over, and Sebastian kneeling next to her on the ground.
“Anne?” He shook his sister by her shoulders, possessed by a sudden panic. “Anne, are you all right? Say something!”
It was as if a rock dropped into the bottomless pit of MC’s stomach. Something had gone wrong. He had reached too far, he had taken away all of her emotions like Isadora had and there would be nothing left of her now but a soulless corpse –
Suddenly, Anne gasped and looked up, her eyes shooting across the room before settling on MC. “You…” she breathed, and MC felt his heart skipping a beat as she slowly stood up from the chair. “You… you cured me. I don’t feel any more pain. It’s… it’s gone!”
She turned to her brother and threw herself into his arms, causing him to momentarily stumble backwards before he embraced her, his face breaking open into a smile that could light up a whole village. “Is it… are you… are you really cured?” he asked, trying to convince himself that he wasn’t dreaming.
MC couldn’t help but slightly tear up at the wholesome display. For all the terrible adversity he’d have had to withstand, now he was finally able to witness the good he was able to do, and it left him speechless. He didn’t even notice Solomon until the man was standing right next to him.
“Anne?” He was making a rather strange sound, and MC realised this was the first time he was seeing the bitter mask falling away.
“Uncle!” Anne freed herself from her brother’s grasp and ran up to Solomon, taking the man’s hand into her own. “It’s a miracle, truly. I’ve been relieved of my suffering. The curse is no more!”
For a moment Solomon was utterly speechless; then he took the girl into his arms, his voice heavy with emotion as he whispered: “I can’t believe it… after all those years…”
His teary gaze met MC’s. “Thank you,” he said, and MC simply nodded.
— — —
Anne’s recovery progressed more smoothly than MC would have ever dared to dream. Within a day she was already back on her feet, helping out around the house with an energy that was simply infectious. MC noticed a remarkable transformation in Sebastian and his uncle as well; they were no longer fighting all the time, and on some occasions he even witnessed them exchanging some kind words, as if there was some completely new side to their relationship that he hadn’t seen before.
MC took it all in with joy and, dare he say, a certain sense of pride as well. He remembered well the conflict that had plagued him after his decision to open the repository, the question of whether he was any better than Isadora and the pain she had inflicted through her good intentions. Seeing the Sallow family healing had provided a definitive conclusion to his doubts.
After a couple of days, he decided to take his leave. When he stepped outside that morning, he was surprised by Sebastian, who came trudging up the hill to meet him, broom in his hand.
“You’re up early,” MC remarked with a chuckle.
“Tell me about it,” he answered, grinning despite being out of breath. “She’s been at it ever since Uncle Solomon allowed her to go outside – making up for all the time she’s lost. Now she’s dragged me into training matches so that she’s ready to get right back on the Quidditch team when she returns to Hogwarts.”
“And she asked you to be her opponent?”
“Hey, don’t give me that tone. Got chewed out by Imelda enough times to be at least half decent on a broom. He shifted the weight on his shoulder for a moment as he gathered his thoughts. “I can’t thank you enough, MC. What you did for my sister… it’s really the best thing that’s ever happened to us in all of our lives. We’ll be forever in your debt.”
“I was glad to be of help,” MC said, slightly embarrassed at all of the praise. “But… I think it’d be for the best that I be on my way again. I don’t want to be a distraction now that you’re finally able to spend time with each other again.”
Sebastian promptly dropped his broom. “But you aren’t a burden at all! And really, you can’t be leaving already. Anne wants to visit Hogsmeade today and she personally requested you accompany us –”
MC felt his heart involuntarily skip a beat. “She did?”
“You wouldn’t let her down now, right?” chuckled Sebastian. “Come on, it’ll be good. I owe you at least a Butterbeer.”
MC thought for a moment, though it didn’t take long for him to make up his mind. “Well… all right, I’ll join you.”
“Excellent. I’ll tell her you’ll be coming along. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m probably going to get an earful if I don’t make it back in time.”
And off he was again, running back towards the field at the bottom of the hill with a speed that left MC chuckling. It didn’t take too long for his thoughts to return to the matter of Anne’s invitation. Was there some special reason for the gesture, or did she simply want to express her gratitude? And even if there was a special reason, what did that mean for him?
He wasn’t the least bit surprised when he caught himself blushing, as he stared down at the figures flying across the field, swallows on a green canvas.
— — —
“Merlin, that was delicious.” Anne was the first of them to step out of the Three Broomsticks, contentedly wiping off her mouth with the back of her hand. “I’d completely forgotten the taste of Butterbeer.”
“Are you sure I’m not going to have to carry you back home?” Sebastian teased. “I’m fairly certain you had at least twelve glasses back there.”
“Oh, stop it. You’re just saying that because you can’t handle more than one glass yourself.”
“I resent that accusation!”
MC chuckled to himself as he listened to the Sallow twins bantering. He hadn’t quite been able to get a word in ever since they arrived in the village, but then again, he didn’t really mind playing third wheel either. It was great to see Anne and Sebastian both so full of life and unsuppressed joy.
As they stood on the street in front of the bar and Anne was suddenly occupied by a quaint little magical flower stall, Sebastian leaned over to whisper in MC’s ear. “Do you think you could keep her company for a few minutes? I’ll just have to pop into Spintwitches to get her a little surprise gift for school.”
“I’d be glad to,” MC nodded.
“Great. Don’t get any funny ideas now, all right? Even when you think I’m not there, I’ll be watching you two like a Hippogriff.”
The comment left him more than a little perplexed as Sebastian disappeared into the crowd of Hogsmeade visitors, just before Anne turned around, cocking an eyebrow at him when she noticed the absence of her brother. “We’ve barely been out here for five minutes and he’s already gone?”
“He had some… matters to attend to,” MC said, quickly recollecting himself. “We could wait here for a little if you –”
“I’ve waited long enough. We’ll just have to find a way to enjoy ourselves without him, wouldn’t you say?”
Before he had any chance to respond or act, she hooked her arm into his, looking up at him with a smile that made his head spin. “Let’s head to the main square.”
They began their walk through the bustling streets, the late afternoon sun casting a warm glow on their surroundings. The village was alive with the chatter of students and the aroma of freshly baked goods drifting from the nearby shops. Anne eyed it all with childlike wonder, suddenly letting out a content sigh.
“Anything the matter?” MC asked.
“I suppose it all just amazes me. It feels like I’m discovering everything all over again.”
“I’m sure it must be daunting, especially after all that time.”
“It is,” she nodded as she continued, her voice slightly wavering. “I was so focused on surviving that everything else ceased to be… real, in a sense. But now… I don’t know. All of a sudden there is a world of possibilities out there, and I’m not quite sure what to do.”
MC turned to face her, their eyes meeting. “Anne, you’ve faced incredible challenges, and you’ve shown immense resilience. Quite frankly, you might just be the strongest person I’ve ever met. I believe you have the potential to do anything you set your mind to.”
A faint blush tinted Anne’s cheeks as she smiled gratefully. “Thank you, MC. Your faith in me means a lot.” Her voice dropped to a softer tone. “You and Sebastian… you were there for me, even when I had long given up hope. I don’t know what would’ve happened to me if it hadn’t been for you."
The words hung in the air, carrying a weight of unspoken emotions. MC’s heart quickened, sensing a shift in the atmosphere between them. Should he say something? Did she want him to say something?
Just then, the sound of music filled the air, drawing their attention to a small crowd gathered on the street. A band had set up, and people were joyfully dancing to the infectious rhythm.
Anne’s eyes sparkled with a mischievous glint as she grabbed MC’s hand. “Come on, MC! Let's join them!”
Caught off guard, MC stumbled for a moment before finding his footing, their heart racing with a sudden surge of all kinds of emotions. As they joined the crowd, Anne’s hand in his, the world around them faded away.
Amidst the swaying and laughter, MC couldn’t help but notice the subtle moments in the way Anne’s eyes lit up whenever their gazes met, and the gentle squeeze of her hand, a touch that lingered just a fraction longer than necessary. Questions began racing through his mind again. Was she just toying with him, knowing it would grind her brother’s gears? No, he had known her to be different than that. But then what did that mean – that there was somehow a deepening connection between them?
But for now, that didn’t matter. He allowed himself to get lost in the dance, riding the wave of her lively spirit, knowing that for now, there was nothing else he needed.
— — —
After dinner that night, Anne asked MC to join her for a walk outside. Sebastian immediately offered himself up to accompany them, but he was sabotaged by Solomon.
“Leave them, boy,” he admonished him, though his tone was not unkind. “I’m sure your sister will manage a few minutes without you.”
MC looked to the man, perhaps expecting a wink or some silent sign of support, but he didn’t see any. Maybe that had been a little too much to ask.
The air outside was refreshing, cool but not uncomfortable, and they walked together side by side for a while before MC decided to break the silence. “Your brother sure seems committed to making up for lost time.”
“I suspect it’s not so much that as the thought of us being alone together getting under his skin,” she said with a chuckle.  “Perhaps we should stay out here for a couple of hours, just to see him unravel.”
MC felt a slight tingle in his stomach. Did she just – no, clearly she was just joking.
They stopped on a plateau with a beautiful view of the hamlet, the cosy lights below piercing through the darkness. Anne let out a deep sigh. MC hoped he wasn’t being overly obvious as he admired her profile, the way she seemed to have been reborn with an ethereal sense of beauty.
“So, Sebastian told me you are leaving?” she asked, the hint of disappointment in her voice not escaping his notice.
“It would be for the best,” MC answered. “As hospitable as you all have been, this healing process is something the three of you need to go through together. I would just be distracting you from that. Besides, there are more things I need to do before I go back to Hogwarts after the summer.”
“Not anything dangerous, I should hope?”
“Don’t worry, I do intend to come back in one piece,” he said with a reassuring smile. “But my ability requires further honing… though you are a great testimony to the progress I’ve made so far, I suppose.”
“Glad to be of help, even though it didn’t really feel that way.”
They shared a chuckle between themselves and stood for a few minutes more, simply enjoying each other’s company. Then they spoke up again.
“Anne –”
“MC –”
They looked at each other slightly perplexed, then they laughed. “Ladies first,” MC said, grinning.
“Fair enough,” Anne laughed, before softening her tone. “I suppose I was just going to express my gratitude again, but then again… I think I’ve wasted far too much time to be playing coy with my feelings. So what I really want to tell you is… well, I’ve been thinking a lot. About what I still want to do, the life I want to live. About the place I see in that life – for you and me.”
She looked up at him, their eyes meeting. She had never looked more beautiful, the warm glow on her cheeks visible even in the pale moonlight. She bit down on her bottom lip as she averted her gaze, the simple gesture causing his heart to flutter. “Now look at me, still beating around the bush…”
“Anne…”
He lifted her chin with his finger and kissed her. There were no questions asked, no things said, simply because there was no need. She responded by taking his head into her hands, deepening the kiss as if she had been given a taste of a forbidden fruit, a life she had always dreamt about and which had now finally become real to her, the fulfilment of a wish.
They still didn’t say a word when they broke apart, just enjoying the sweet and vulnerable sensation of the moment. Anne smiled, opening her eyes to him. “I’m glad you feel the same way.”
He took one of her hands into his, squeezing it. “Anne, is this… am I really the one you want?”
“Would I have kissed you if I didn’t?” As if to accentuate her answer, she kissed him again, leaving him breathless as her lips touched his in a way that left him practically a mess.
“I know I want this,” she said after pulling back again, taking both of his hands. “And well… you have some time to think it over, if you need it.”
“I think I’ve already made up my mind,” said MC as he smiled at her. “Though… do you think your brother will take kindly to the idea of us being together?”
Anne burst out in laughter; he wasn’t quite sure what was so funny, but he laughed along nevertheless, finding it hard to resist her giggle.
“Of all the dangers on your path, the perils threatening you, that is the thing you choose to worry about?”
And before he was even able to utter a response, her lips were back on his again, and he simply decided to stop thinking.

TLOVM Season 2 Eps 10-12 Ramblings
EP. 10
- Kevdak is going to be the most satisfying victory this season
- Kaylie returns! I like how much of the story they’ve managed to get in such a small number of episodes.
- Travis’ sounds this season are fucking brutual good god...
- “Where does your strength come from?” Hell yes, the return of one of my favourite moments in the campaign
- “I. WOULD LIKE. TO. RAAAGE.” Hell. Yes. Kinda figured that’d lead to him getting his full strength back, but damn if it isn’t satisfying as hell to see.
- Seeing the rest of the party show up on the rooftop all badass... I love it so much.
- “Vox Machina! Fuck. Shit. Up!” And the battle cry to end all battle cries. Let’s fucking go.
- Scanlan’s backing music here is incredible and I love the fight scene animations so much in this show.
- I love that the animations when Vex uses the necklace are basically the same as Pokéball animations.
- I was right. Most satisfying death of the season. Fuck you Kevdak.
- Vax. Good grief. Get your shit together.
- And here’s the music battle between Scanlan and Kaylie.
- “At dawn, we plan!” I love how many of these little one-liners they manage to sneak in.
- “I’M DADDY!?” I mean, that’s one way to end an episode...
EP. 11
- For half a second I thought they changed the Scanlan and Sybil story. But no.
- The threads of fate and Vax’s bond to the Raven queen are really interesting to see. So many little moments that they couldn’t do in campaign but really enhance the story in the series.
- Of all things Scanlan could’ve said, why puppy?
- And Percy continues to be a fucking nerd.
- This whole Raven Queen scene is beautiful. Love the colours and composition so much.
- Yes, inside the dragon. This’ll go well.
- Two-part dragon fight!
EP. 12
- What... flash forward instead of flash back? No, just a dream. Of course.
- This whole fight is making me really appreciate the animators even more. I can’t imagine the nightmare of animating a fight sequence on a flying enemy.
- Again, it’s impressive how much of the original fight they kept, even if they made some slight tweaks to make it more cohesive.
- Vax got his wings! I’m only sad it wasn’t from Gilmore pushing him off a cliff like it was in the campaign... but I guess this is his “Where does your strength come from.” moment.
- Kevdak’s death was the most satisfying death this season. Ripley’s will be the most satisfying next season.
- Raishan... All I ask is we get some kind of reference to Larkin next season. That’s all.
- One dragon down, three to go. I can’t wait for next season.
GENERAL
- I love that this season showcased many of the cast’s individual skills. Travis and his battle noises, Liam and his ability to convey so much emotion with so few words, Sam and his singing, and of course Matt popping up everywhere in the world as various NPCs.
- I always wonder how they’re going to condense hundreds of hours of gameplay down to only a few without seeming rushed, but I was really impressed just how much they managed to cover this season. The feywild, Kevdak, the Slayer’s Take, the sphinxes, hunting vesitiges, slaying dragons. Dozens of hours of game time condensed into a nice cohesive story.

Ill Prepared (Dannymay Day 3: Blizzard)
Jack and Maddie drag Danny on a ghost hunting trip in the Rocky Mountains. They are very prepared to hunt this ghost. They are not at all prepared for the blizzard they get caught in.
“Oh, Dann-o!” Jack Fenton’s voice echoed through Fentonworks, loud and booming. It woke Danny with a start, tumbling off of his bed and onto the floor in a pile of blankets. He groaned and pulled the blanket over his head. He should have expected something like this; it was, after all, December 21st, and life (or half-life, in his case) was going well. The winter truce had started a few days ago, and winter break started just the day prior. Of course something had to go wrong. It wouldn’t be a Fenton Christmas without some disaster.
His dad showed up in his doorway, large frame blocking all of the light from the hallway. “Are you ready for an adventure, Danny boy?” Danny looked at the alarm clock on his bed side table and groaned. 6:07 AM.
“Couldn’t it wait until the sun comes up?” he groaned, pulling himself up from the floor.
Jack threw a bulky pile of fabric at Danny. “Nope! We’ve got the get the GAV moving if we want to get to the mountains by tomorrow! Your mother’s already got most of your stuff packed, just make sure that your coat fits and we’ll be good to go! Otherwise we’ll need to bring some anti-ecto fabric so we can get you one at the supply station.”
Danny held up the pile of fabric. It was a coat. A very heavy winter coat. Danny scowled at it. He didn’t particularly like coats, though he would wear lighter ones during winter if only to keep up appearances. He was, after all, and ice core ghost. Nothing was colder than his soul. (He would have to remember that one, Sam would like it.) “Where are we even going? It isn’t anywhere cold enough to warrant this.” He held the coat away from him with disdain.
“I told you at breakfast on Monday, we’re going to find a yeti! In the Rocky Mountains!” Jack beamed at Danny. “Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten, son! This’ll be a wonderful Christmas trip!”
Danny had not eaten breakfast on Monday. He had been sleeping over Tucker’s house, partially to play the new expansion of Doom, mostly because his parents had been working on a new anti-ghost something or other, and Danny had not wanted to be anywhere near when they got it working. “I was at Tucker’s on Monday, this is the first I’m hearing of it.”
Jack looked confused, before shrugging and grinning widely at Danny. “Oh well, then surprise! We’re going to the Rocky Mountains to hunt the yeti! Now try on your new coat so we can get this show on the road!”
“Can’t I stay here?” Danny complained. “It’s not like it would be the first time.”
“We aren’t going to leave you here all alone!”
“I won’t be all alone, I’ll have-” Danny paused. He was going to say that he’d be with Jazz, but she had taken the opportunity to spend winter break at a two week long psych program at a college a few hours away. She had apologized for her absence, but it was a great opportunity. Still, it meant that Danny was out of an excuse. Grumbling, Danny pulled on the coat the rest of the way. God it was warm.
“Come now Danno, it’ll be fun! A parent son bonding experience!” Jack slapped Danny on the back, hard. “The coat fits great! Get your shoes and get into the car. We’ve got a ghost to catch!” — The drive was thrilling. Not because it was exciting, but because Maddie had let Jack drive as soon as they were out of Amity Park. If Danny hadn’t already been half dead, he was fairly certain he would’ve died from a heart attack. Luckily (or unluckily, he supposed) he was, so his father’s driving couldn’t kill him. How it didn’t kill anyone else on the 12 hour drive was a miracle in and of itself.
Whenever Danny wasn’t gripping onto the seat for his half-life or blocking out all sound with headphones, he listened to his mother and father talk about their hopes for this trip. They had heard of a yeti in the Rocky Mountains recently, and were certain that it was a ghost, biding its time to attack and drag unsuspecting tourists or climbers up to its peak to…his parents never really got to why they yeti would choose to do something like that. They rarely made it to that point when it came to ghosts, simply assuming that the ghost would because it was a ghost, and that it didn’t need another reason. Even if the yeti was a ghost, and not just some ambitious bear or faulty reports, Danny knew it wouldn’t attack without being provoked. He had met many yetis; they were friendly, if a bit scary to look at. He couldn’t exactly tell his parents that, so he settled in for the long haul.
At least he was being dragged away during the Winter Truce. The only ghosts that would break the truce would be non sapient ghosts, and possibly Vlad, but with both Danny and Maddie in another state across the country, it wasn’t likely that Vlad would try much of anything. (He had texted Sam and Tucker that, if either of them suspected that Vlad was up to no good, to leave a collection of dirty socks and gym shorts on Vlad’s Amity Park property. They would have done that anyway, but it felt nice to be part of the planning at least a little bit.)
When the GAV finally arrived at the place they would be staying, Danny was green in the face and his stomach churned. He thought he had gotten used to his dad’s driving over the years, but it wasn’t often that they went on long road trips with him driving. Even Danny’s stomach couldn’t put up with it for that long.
Unfortunately for Danny, the place they were staying was not a hotel, or a house, or even a cabin where he could empty his stomach in the privacy of a bathroom. It was a camp site, little more than a place with tree roots numbering in the single digits and a circle of ashes in the center that was designated as a fire pit. They were just on the base of the Rocky Mountains, which towered high just to the west of them. It was a pleasant view, and the cold air felt good on his skin after being trapped in the GAV for so long.
His mother started setting up the tent, a flimsy looking thing barely big enough to fit all three of them, and his dad started setting up the ghost detecting perimeter. Danny grumbled under his breath as he started to drag their luggage out of the trunk. The stuff his mother had packed was, he noted, not very suitable for a “camping” environment, let alone one this late into the year. It seemed like she had focused almost entirely on the ghost hunting part of the trip, and completely neglected the other aspects of survival that were much more likely to come into play. He had expected that; he hadn’t spent his lifetime and half-lifetime around them to expect them to be practical, especially where ghosts were involved. This did mean that Danny couldn’t actually unload most of the trunk without getting zapped, cut, detected, or setting off some kind of alarm or another.
Danny grabbed what he could out of the trunk, receiving a slight zap from a pile of metal he didn’t quite recognized, and dragged it over to where his mother was hammering a spike into the ground with far more force than was strictly necessary. “I got what I could carry, but I don’t want to grab any of the ghost hunting stuff that’s in there. You know how it acts around me,” Danny laughed nervously. He knew his parents assumed that their devices malfunctioned because of ecton contamination, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t super nervous whenever he had to bring it up. Everytime he did it, he worried that this would be the time that they would figure out that that was probably a very dumb excuse.
This was not that time. “Oh thank you sweetie, just set it all down right there, and your father will grab the ghost hunting gear once he’s done setting up the defenses. Would you mind helping me with that other spike?” His mother did not look up from her continuous whaling on the poor metal spike. The ground was hard because of the cold, but Danny was fairly certain that she didn’t need to hit it that hard. Was it bending?
Danny did as he was told, setting the pile of bags and his fathers suitcase. A single day trip of clothes for him almost always required a suitcase if he decided to actually bring clothes. Most of the time he stuck with his hazmat suit, but it was too cold for it out here. Both his parents were wearing heavy jackets lined with anti-ghost material. Over their jumpsuits of course; it would take more than the cold to pry those things off of them.
Danny grabbed a spike and started to hit it into his ground. He didn’t use as much force as Maddie did; he didn’t need to. The ground, even more frozen beneath his feet, molded easily to his will, allow him to delicately hammer the spike into place and locking it with some not-quite natural ice. He glanced up; his display of powers wasn’t flashy by any means, but that didn’t mean that any ghost detecting gear his father had already set up wouldn’t catch him. His father was tangled in a mess of wires, strung up like a Christmas tree. Whatever he was setting up was giving him a lot more trouble than it was giving Danny, at least right now.
“Well done sweetie!” Maddie said, looking at him with a beaming smile. Her spike had successfully gotten into the ground, though it looked like it might end up a ghost itself with how beat up it was. “But aren’t you cold? You should go put on your jacket, its freezing out here.” Danny looked down in surprise at his uncovered arms. He had thrown on a t-shirt and jeans in his rush to get ready that morning, and hadn’t even realized that he had forgotten his jacket in the car. The air around him didn’t feel cold at all. If anything, it was comfortable. Crisp.
“Oops.” Danny gave her a lopsided smile and ran to the GAV, throwing open the backdoor and grabbing the jacket. He didn’t want to put it on. It was nice out, even if he could see his breath puffing in front of him every couple of seconds, and the jacket was suffocating and constraining. He didn’t have much of a choice though, so he shrugged it on, leaving the zipper only done up halfway.
Maddie came up behind him. “See, isn’t that better?” A series of ghost related curses echoed across the campsite. “I’m going to go help untangle your father. Would you be willing to set up the rest of the tent?” Danny nodded, and his mother went off.
— Outside of a close call where one of the weapons in the GAV started to chase Danny around the campsite (his mother had intercepted it with one solid hit from the Fenton Anti-Creep Stick. “I hate to destroy something so useful, but its not much use if its chasing after our junior ghost hunter!” she had said.) It was, overall, almost a nice time. He had had significantly worse days in December before. He would prefer to be hanging out at Tucker’s, or with Sam if her parents allowed him to join in on the Hanukkah celebrations, but he didn’t mind camping one bit.
And then his parents started prepping for the evening's ghost hunting activities, and any part of the trip he had been enjoying got zapped away. Just like he was getting zapped by the copious amount of tech they were placing on him. It wasn’t that it hurt per se, but it did make his skin tingle like static electricity, and he couldn’t say that it was pleasant. After his mom finished outfitting him with more ghost hunting gear than was necessary (and helping his dad strap a few more onto his back) they set off following a trail further into the mountains. It has been dark for about an hour, and the air was only getting colder, but that didn’t stop them from traipsing through the woods.
They were only traipsing around for an hour before it started to snow. It was a soft snowfall, barely coating the ground in white, but it was enough to have Maddie start to shiver under her coat. Jack, who had already yelled “Ghost!” at the top of his lungs and fired into various non-ghost locations, only got jumpier. “Dear,” Maddie said, saddling up to Jack. “I think we should make our way back to camp now. We can scout the area more in the morning, and set up a trap for the spook during the day.”
“That’s a brilliant idea Mads!” Jack said. “You’re always so smart!” They led the way back to camp, moving quickly over the path, flashlight leading the way. Danny trailed behind. He didn’t need to breathe, but he took deep breaths anyway. The cold was sharp in his nose, biting in his lungs, but it was nice. Soothing. He had realized, after visiting the Far Frozen the first couple times, that Amity Park was almost always warm, sometimes to the point of unbearably hot. He had gotten used to it, stuck through it, forced it to become just another nagging discomfort in the back of his mind. It wasn’t hard to do, when you were healing from broken bones and gaping wounds every other day. It didn’t mean that the delicious, frigid, clean air of the mountains didn’t make his very core hum in satisfaction. It almost made the trip worth it.
When they arrived back at the camp, Jack fell asleep almost instantly in his sleeping bag. Maddie, who was curled up next to him, took longer to fall asleep, but she drifted off in a couple of minutes. Danny took the opportunity to slip out of his sleeping bag, out of his coat, and out of the tent. He zipped the flap closed behind him, and sat on the ground amidst a shallow bank of snow. (It didn’t melt where he sat, he noticed absently. Why would it? It was almost a part of him, and he, a part of it.) The snow had begun to fall heavier by this point, the wind picking up, and ice started to form on the tips of Danny’s eyelashes. It felt wonderful. He couldn’t say how long he sat there, breathing in the bitter cold air, freezing his human lungs and his ghostly core. Long enough for his lips to turn blue and his hands to go numb.
Danny couldn’t say when, exactly, the winds picked up enough to make the branches of the trees whip into a frenzy. He couldn’t say when the snow began to turn to hail, pelting the ground with a force as if they were cannonballs, yet always bouncing off of him harmlessly. He couldn’t say when the snowstorm turned from beautiful to something deadly, from a natural occurrence to a force of nature. He could say when the spikes driven into the ground started to fail, and the flaps of the tent began to whip angrily, and he heard his mothers concerned yelling from inside the tent. (He shouldn’t have been able to hear it over the wind. He shouldn’t have been able to sit out here unharmed. He shouldn’t be a lot of things. It had never stopped him before.)
Danny ducked back into the tent to find his mother arguing with his father, both of them shivering in their sleeping bags, lips blue. She was yelling, saying that the ghost must have taken him, that he might be lost or worse in the woods. His dad was agreeing, but was stopping her from searching in the storm. “It’s too dangerous!” he said, yelling louder than he normally did over the sound of the wind, of the hail. “If you go out there you could die!”
When they noticed him, they ran over and hugged him, dragging him into the sleeping bag with them. “Oh sweetie pie you’re freezing! What were you doing out there? This storm is dangerous, and that’s without the ghost around!”
“I just had to take a leak,” Danny said numbly. It was dawning on him that the inside of this tent was not all that warmer than the world outside, even if the wind chill was taken away. The sleeping bag the three of them shared was warmer than the tent, yes, but he didn’t miss how his dad’s lips were tinged blue, how his mother shivered, how each of their breaths crystalized in the air around them. “Did you bring anything to warm the tent? Or to help us weather the storm?”
Jack and Maddie shared a look. “We didn’t expect a blizzard,” Maddie said. “But I’m sure it’ll pass, and we’ll all be just fine. We just have to stay here, where its warm.” Danny wasn’t surprised. His parents were only ever prepared when it came to ghosts, and this blizzard was far too natural. But all Danny could do is nod.
The minutes passed by slowly, and the storm didn’t show any signs of getting better. If anything, it only got worse. Danny noticed how his mothers speech started to slur, how she drew into herself and shook violently. How his father, even sitting in the tent like he was, seemed more disoriented than normal, both in mind and body. The reality of the situation dawned on him with his growing horror. If something didn’t change soon, his parents would not make it through the night. He could help. He knew how, knew that the ice and snow would listen to him, if only in a small area. He could save him. (It would cost him everything. He didn’t care; he had already thrown what remained of his life away when he started fighting ghosts. He wasn’t going to let this stop him now.)
“Do you have the controls for the ghost defenses you set up?” he asked, crawling over to his mother. She nodded. “I need you to turn it off, and I need you to trust me.”
“I cann’ do tha,” Maddie slurred, teeth chattering. “We’d be weloming a ghost in.”
“Please, mom,” Danny begged. “I just need you to turn it off, and stay still. Please.” He looked deep into his mom’s eyes, holding his breath. Time seemed to slow even further as she studied him, trying to figure out what he was planning. Finally she nodded. Her hands were too clumsy, too uncoordinated, to pull the remote out of her jacket pocket, but she managed to show Danny where it was. He fiddled with it for a moment, before shutting it off. Then, he walked into the storm and transformed.
His first order of business was a shelter. A proper shelter, one that would block the pelting hail and whipping winds. He made an igloo, small and compact to save as much heat as he could, but sturdy, surrounding the flimsy tent. It was made of ghost ice, and wouldn’t melt. Not easily, anyway.
His next order of business was much harder, as any loose branches that would burn proper, and not just smoke, were buried under ever growing mounds of snow. If he hadn’t been able to go intangible, he probably would never have found any. But he could, so he returned to the igloo with his arms full of tinder.
His parents were huddled next to each other, Jack openly sobbing into Maddie’s shoulder, blubbering something about Danny, though most of it was unintelligible. They both started when they saw him, reaching for ectoblasters strapped to their waists, but their hands were numb and shaky, their reaction time slowed from hypothermia. Danny transformed back to his human form before they could aim. “Listen,” he said quickly, dumping the pile of sticks just out the door of the tent. “You can be mad at me later. Scream, kick me out, try and kill me, dissect me, whatever. I know you want to. But if you don’t let me help you, just until this storm dies down, you’ll end up dead too, and I won’t let this happen. So please. Just don’t shoot me yet.” Danny watched as his parents stared at him, horror clear on their faces. He left the tent before they could say a word.
Back in ghost form, he lit most of the tinder he had gathered on fire; not ghostly fire, just regular good old fashioned fire. It’s light and warmth filled the area around the tent, filling the igloo. Danny got to work, pulling out the spikes they had pounded into the ground. They came out easily under his touch. The tent wouldn’t do them much good now; better to burn it for warmth. His parents emerged from the tent after he started to take it down. It wasn’t like they had much of a choice.
They huddled near the fire, color slowly starting to return to their skin, shaking starting to abide. They did not look at him. He did not look at them. He focused on keeping the fire burning, on keeping the ice and wind outside away, on not thinking about what they might do to him now or after they were safe, about the threats they had made and injuries they had given him time and time again, about how sleeping was already hard enough for him, and where would he stay now that they knew? They wouldn’t let a ghost stay in their home willingly; how much harder would it be to sleep when he was on the streets? Would they hunt down Sam and Tucker, if he tried to stay with them? Would they-
“Danny?” His mothers voice cut through his thoughts. “Are…are you really my Danny?”
“Yes.” He couldn’t stop the quiver in his voice.
“What happened?” This time, he couldn’t stop the tears.

𝗦𝗔𝗞𝗨𝗦𝗔 kissed you before going to bed and told you to come to bed when finishing. He was knocked out - in sleepy land until he rolled over in the early hours of the morning to bring you closer to him but you weren’t there. “They can’t be” he whispers. Peeking an eye open - already knowing where you were. “Mind telling me why you’re still here and at four in the morning……with energy drinks (?) love, what the fuck ?” “Morning Omi. How’d you sleep ?” You look over your shoulder to see him frown at you.
“Don’t morning, me. Tell me that you didn’t stay up all night” he sits next to you pushing your notebook to a clear space in the coffee table. “Then I won’t tell you” you shrug giggling making him groan. “Did you at least take a break to eat ?” “No. I said I was going to do that but I completely forgot” hearing your answer ,he leaves for the kitchen and comes back with two bowls,cereal and milk. “Here this’ll keep you steady for now” he hands you your bowl nagging you to eat before you got sick. When you were done you set the bowl down and go back to picking up your notebook, however Kiyoomi had other plans.
“NOPE. You’re comin’ with me” he throws you over his shoulder, making his way to the room. “I have my day off today so we’re sleeping” he says before his head hits the pillow and arms circling around you. It didn’t take long for the both of you to fall asleep. After eight hours of cramming things into your brain, there was nothing else to expect. ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
BOKUTO thought you’d go to sleep a few minutes after he went to bed but he had been in bed for an hour now, still awake - waiting for you to come join him to cuddle to sleep. Grabbing his phone from the night stand, he sees that it’s exactly eleven on the dot. Getting out of bed and going to where you were at the desk in the next room, he sees you sipping on coffee - reading some notes you had taken hours before. “Hey baby ? You coming to bed ?” He asks poking his head and half his body into the room
“I can’t Kou. I need to finish up this third part” putting your mug down, you look up to see him pout. “How many parts are left ?” “Two, baby”. Now, Bokuto wasn’t all too happy with you staying up - after all he only went to college for two years before getting drafted for the MSBY. He understood that you working for your career was a priority but at the moment his priority was having you in bed and in his arms, ear pressed against your chest to hear your heart beat. “Guess I’ll just stay with you” he pulls up a rolling chair settling down in it; smiling at you.
“Kou, this will take me all night.”
“I know. I’ll spend it here with you. Good thing it’s off season so I can stay up till anytime”
“That’ll mess up your sleep schedule though”
“No it won’t” and he was right. It wouldn’t mess up anything for him. It was now three in the morning and he was on your lap knocked. You even used his chest as a table for your books when you ran out of space on the desk.
He wakes up when the sound of a RedBull can opens and some of the sprit falls on his cheek. Blinking the sleep away - he stirs up from your lap, taking in the circles under your eyes. “Are you done yet ?” “No. I need to read through this article” you pull out a sheet with a pencil. “Then let’s popcorn read so you can finish this up. This studying thing annoys me. It takes you away from me” he grabs your paper and starts reading the first paragraph to help you finish faster. ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Atsumu’s plane landed around five and got home at six from an away game the team had. He wasn’t excepting to see you eating a bowl of cereal with your laptop propped up on your legs with a blanket over your head. “Ya waited fer me ta get home ?! Awe, angel yer so sweet ♡” “Shhh Tsumu !!! I need to hear this” you shut him up increasing the volume of your computer.
“Welcome home babe - thanks,baby! It’s great to be back - I missed ya- I missed ya too, angel” Atsumu goes back and forth with himself creating a welcome home scenario - playing both your part and his.
Making it over to the floor where you were set up, he squints his eyes seeing numbers and letters appearing on the computer screen. Face dropping even more, he sets down his duffle bag then takes your laptop away from you. “Heyy!!” “Let me see your face” he squished your cheeks with his hand to get you to stop moving.
“Ya didn’t”
“I did. And will continue” you finish up your bowl of cereal tossing it aside to grab your laptop from his hands but he yanks it away.
“How long ya’ve been at it ?”
“Since two days ago”
Hearing you say two days ago blew him away. This meant you probably hadn’t eaten anything nor taken a break. Setting down the laptop - he brings you up to the couch snuggling into you. Playing with your hair and making small talk, he feels your exhaustion overpower you - slowly carrying you into a deep slumber. A slumber that he also needed and took the chance while you were in his arms. ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Hinata was up studying with you. While you studied for your career, he studied his plays and next moves to make in the next game the team had. “I can jump a little higher” he pauses the video he was watching to write down a solution for his problem. Glancing over to you, he sees you handing him a glass bottle of refrigerated Starbucks. “Thanks” he smiles at you opening up the drink and looking at you again. “What time is it ?” His eyes show how bad he needed sleep, however he refused to go to bed unless he found ways to improve his plays.
“It’s ten. I think we should go to sleep. I’m pretty much finished” you suggest
“Fifteen more minutes. That way we can both finish and sleep the whole day” he says yawning.
Rubbing the sleep from your eyes you look at him and turn off the tv. “No. You were literally just falling asleep just now.”
“Y/n- but pleaseee” he gives you puppy eyes. Ones that you ignore packing up your things in their respective place. Unlike the other MSBY 3, Hinata will be the one you have to force to go to sleep because of how invested he is in finding ways to palm that ball. Though the others are also invested, Hinata is the one who has a hard time because of the excitement.
“No. Sweetheart it’s about to be noon. Let’s try to at least sleep” you grab his hand - dragging him to the shared room. “Maybe I can do that trick Atsumu did with Osamu when we were in high school. When they changed positions”
“Shut up. Sleep” you kiss his forehead resting your head on your pillow - quickly falling asleep.
“Baby ?….y/n …..oh they fell asleep” Hinata rubs his eyes, feeling the warmth of the bed - maybe a quick nap wouldn’t hurt.

Birthday
Pairings: The Avengers x  reader
Summary:
It’s your birthday and the team gets creative on how to surprise you, putting their acting skills to the test.
Word count: 2,350
A/n: just a little something because,, well,, it’s my birthday *runs away* also it’s cheesy, hopefully it makes sense lmao
Warnings: uhhh brief mention of explosion? mostly fluff
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Avengers wanted to get creative for your birthday this year. For the few years they've known you they picked up on things about you. One, you paid no mind to your birthday at all and just considered it a normal day like the rest of the 365, Tony took note that you hated parties, at least the really big ones, something that involved only the team would be good.
Okay, you sound like a party pooper, but that isn't the case; it's not a crime to just... not want to have a grand celebration, right? And people singing the 'happy birthday' song to you too while you just sit there in silence. It's awkward, you once told Natasha. It’s also awkward and hard for you to receive presents even though that’s what birthdays are all about, you’re still getting used to it since you knew someone like Tony Stark.
Well, the team think you're an amazing friend and they all treat you like family. They're so glad they met someone like you.
You're immediately called to the conference room on that day. Only to find the team arguing and pointing fingers at one another.
You kinda just slot in, sitting on the chair you usually sit on whenever there's a meeting or mission briefing. Glancing around, you try and find out what they're fighting about.
Security. Suits. Brief mention of Ultron. Rhodey busying himself with phones, probably making a lot of calls. Natasha and Clint talking among themselves, only raising their voice whenever they're included in the conversation which mainly consisted of Tony and Steve arguing.
"Suit up, get the jet ready." Steve dismisses but before he could walk out himself you raise your hand.
"Hey, sorry, I just woke up," you say sheepishly but coolly at the same time. "What happened, is everyone supposed to go? Can I read the file?" Because if this is an Avengers-level threat that required everyone, you'd want to know all about it.
His sharp and expression softens slightly when he looks at you. "No file, I'm afraid. Some of the compound's security protocols have been compromised, someone hacked in." He proceeds to tell you how they particularly had interest in Bruce and Tony's lab so the other rooms were untouched.
Apparently, they took blueprints and materials, maybe a handful of Tony's suits.
But if you think about it, those two carelessly letting the security to their lab loose? Highly unlikely...
You push the thought to the back of your mind and nod when Steve tells you to get ready. Stark tech can be dangerous in the wrong hands, after all. Let alone the Iron Man suits.
Fortunately, those things have trackers. Leaving you to wonder again why those idiots don't even try and take them off so they won't tracked?
Sat on the floor of the jet while everyone was strangely quiet but once again you didn't pay any mind, you sharpen a few of your knives. Natasha sat on a stool near you, idly picking her nails. An hour into the flight you furrow your brows and look around.
"Are you guys okay?"
"Yes," Tony states quickly and a matter-of-factly. They all share glances before he continued. "It's the tension. Sorry. My fault."
"It's not your fault, Tony," Bruce starts.
"I'm sorry, to whom were those stolen suits again?" Steve speaks up as well and you could tell it's gonna be a full blown argument again.
"Now hold on just a second-" Tony faces the super soldier to counter.
You merely blink, not expecting a simple question to turn out like this. Clint just glances from the pilot's seat and Natasha almost cracks a smile by the look of your face. If only you knew it was all fake, all planned. But what does she know? You're a spy too, maybe you've figured out what they're up to and decided to play along.
Sad to say you're still oblivious. Maybe the fact that you only slept three hours last night is one case. You wanted nothing more than your bed right now.
Heck, not one of them wished you a happy birthday but you didn't notice at all.
Tuning out their bickering you sit down next to Natasha who's the only one not in the argument.
"I haven't seen Wanda all day," you say and she turns her head to face you. "Or Sam, or Bucky."
"Probably not back from their mission." Natasha answers promptly.
You frown at that. "Steve made this sound like an Avengers-level threat, and it is, shouldn't they be here?"
You don't wait for a response, opening up a globe-shaped hologram that shows where the jet, represented by a blinking dot. Your eyes slightly widen when you see the target location which is one of the places you've been dying to visit your whole life.
Maybe it's just a coincidence. You definitely didn't expect to visit it for the first time on a mission though.
Natasha clears her throat. "Hey, have you read the book I gave you?" She subtly closes the globe up when she catches your attention.
You shake your head bashfully. "You know I'm a slow reader. Give me two months then I'll come back to you." You laugh. Natasha smiles and tells you to take your time. "Have you read the book I gave you?"
"I loved it."
"I knew you would!" You say excitedly and the next few moments you discuss about the specific book. She's just glad you didn't ask any further questions about the location.
--
All of you split up once you reach the base but Rhodey and Bruce stay in the jet as backup. The place reminded you so much of the old Avengers tower, only with darker themes. You're paired with Clint who you follow to the side of the building, with surprisingly no cautiousness. He just... ran in, entrance deserted of guards.
You all had a digital, tech checklist to see what was stolen including all the suit names. So far you've searched two drawers now and still no sign of any agent or guard. But it's weird since the others are clearly doing their part on their floors. Thuds, footsteps and sometimes banging sounds could be heard all around.
“Finally," you mutter when you hear footsteps behind you, spinning around so suddenly to surprise your enemy and take him down with ease. You raise an eyebrow when they don't put up a fight at all.
Clint was in front of a computer when you peek in to one of the rooms but he waves you off. "I'll meet you on the next floor. This'll take a second."
"One suit on the roof!" you hear Steve grunt through your earpiece.
"Remember to remove the arc reactor, that'll shut them down for sure." Bruce reminds through everyone's comms.
You hear Tony let out a noise. "Might have a problem with that, Banner, they're all reprogrammed."
Expecting the man with seven Ph. D's to worry, it only took him a minute to respond back. "It's your tech. I don't believe they could do that completely especially having them for only twelve hours."
"In that case," Tony sighs. "There should be a kill switch under one of their reactors."
"Which one?" Natasha grunts.
The deafening silence from Tony's line explains it.
You fight your way though the thugs which again, don't put up a fight. Sometimes you throw one punch and they're out cold, leading you to believe the intense training Bucky insisted you do worked. The only tough ones were the Iron Man suits themselves.
Ripping out the arc reactors wasn't easy. You had to use all you force. On the second one you encounter it got the upper hand and blasts you through a wall, the impact sending sharp pain to your head and back.
You hear metal thumping of a suit so you get back up and attempt to get your hands on the Iron Man in front of you.
"Hey, hey. Same team. Look," Tony grips on your wrists and lifts his mask up. "You alright?"
“Yeah," you pant, relaxing a bit. "Yeah. One of them got m-"
"We just discovered a bomb, northwest," Clint says. By ‘we’ he means him and Natasha. The redhead speaks right after. “Two and a half minutes. How many suits left, Friday?”
"Only one more suit is fully functional."
You get out of Tony's hold and sprint up the stairs. "I got it."
He smiles to himself. The plan is all coming  to place.
As soon as you enter the room you dodge a blast from the much bulkier Mark XVI. Of course they'd want to make the stealth suit more powerful. You launch yourself towards it, stomping on an arm while trying to dodge blasts from the the other one.
"Y/N! Fifty seconds!" Steve shouts in your earpiece.
You could've just jumped out, leaving the compromised suits here to be blown up but being under pressure made you panic and set your only goal to find the switch.
The suit could still set off a blast from the arc reactor so you couldn't really get your hands on it without losing a freaking arm.
"Get out of there!”
But you didn’t have enough time. So you just curl into a ball against the wall, accepting your fate.
A pop did go off. Loud, but you didn't feel yourself torn into pieces right after. You also heard a bunch of aye’s and oh’s. Redwing whirs by to your head to drop off a birthday hat.
"Happy Birthday!”
Your eyes fly open. Turns out the only thing inside Mark XVI was confetti. Natasha walks over to you to inspect and make sure you're alright.
"What the hell?" Your eyes widen at her, then at everyone. Sam and Bucky were now standing with them, smiling at you amused.
"I think she's in shock.”
“You think?”
Steve glares at Tony with a hint of amusement. "I told you it would be too much."
"Trust me she prefers something like this instead of a big party. Don't you, Y/N?"
"What do you mean?" You take off the hat and clutch it between your hands, appreciating Natasha rubbing your back as you try to collect yourself. "How is none of this real?"
"We basically faked a mission for you." Rhodey says.
You look around all the rubble. "This building, the people, suits-"
"Bought the place," Tony states. "Hired stuntmen, did a few tweaks on the suits...”
"God, why would you do that?" You bury your face in your hands, not knowing if you should be laughing or crying. "I punched those guys!"
"They'll be fine, they signed up for it."
You gently get up and brush off some confetti off your knees.
"But back at the compound... you guys were yelling at each other and during the whole thing you all sounded serious," you point out. "Was that all part of the act?"
Especially when that 'bomb' was about to go off. Steve's panicked voice made you scared for your life, only to know that it was all fake.
They all show signs of agreement, laughing.
"We'd make such great actors." Natasha smirks.
"Alright, the cake isn't going to blow itself." Clint walks up to you with said cake and you meet him halfway.
Everyone gathers around and before they could inhale to sing the stupid song, you cut them off. "You all know I hate to be sung at. Can we just get this over with?"
They all burst out laughing, you giggle in the process, blowing out your candle. You all group hug right after. The laughter makes you miss the sound of faint thunder outside.
"Look who's late." Bruce points out.
"Yes, I got here as soon as I can, my apologies." Thor smiles sheepishly.
Your ears perk up at the all too familiar voice of the god of thunder. Moving everyone of the way, you leap to hug him. "Thor!"
"Happy birthday, dearest Y/N." He grins and pats you on the head. "I'm afraid my - I mean - our gift, is with Loki at the moment."
"Enough with the formality, I’m just glad you’re here.”
Peter rings up Tony to tell him everything's set up at the huge building they rented for your low-key party. Just the Avengers. Peter, Vision and Wanda were in charge of setting things up over there, from decorations and food. Sam and Bucky also helped a bit before they arrived at the fake base.
So you all get into the jet again, this time you look at the windows in awe to see what the city's like. You also asked a bunch of questions on how they pulled something stupid but unique fake mission like that.
Once you've reached your destination, the place was simple yet big enough to fit everyone. Tony really took notes for this year. You didn't like anything too fancy or elegant, and you didn't like huge-ass parties with hundreds of people you've never met before.
Here you're with your family eating, drinking booze and playing games, generally having a good time.
You give the other five Avengers big hugs. Vision's never usually a hugger but for you he made an exception just for today. Everyone was surprised when he lifted you off your feet and spun you around.
"Hugging has a lot of good benefits," Vision says when he lets you go. "Astounding, I know. It is recommended eight times a day, hopefully you've already gotten that much."
You giggle at his remark and Wanda rolls her eyes playfully. “Thank you, Vision.”
“Splendid, that means I don’t have to give you one.”
You turn around to see the god of mischief himself carefully hand you a wrapped box. Loki chuckles when you smile at him. “Happiest Birthday.”
“Loki.... you know you and Thor didn’t have to-”
“Thor? That one’s from me. I assure you.”
“Y/N!” You hear Tony call from the other side of the room. “It’s time for presents, little miss. Good lord this looks like Christmas morning.”

Only blue talk and love
Remember
How we knew love was here to stay
Summer hadn’t truly felt over until Remus saw Regulus standing in the airport, bags checked for New York and backpack slung over one shoulder.
“Well,” Regulus said, shifting a little between his feet. “Here goes.”
Remus laughed. “It’s going to be amazing, Reg.”
“Maybe. Hopefully.”
“It will,” Sirius said. “But if you need anything we’re…what? A four hour drive?”
Remus nodded. “Yeah, you can call.”
Regulus huffed out a laugh. “You two sound like worried parents.”
Sirius laughed, too. “I’m just glad we know what those sound like now.”
Regulus’ expression shifted, tightening. He nodded, seemed to hang in hesitation for a moment, and then walked forward two steps and threw his arms around Sirius. Sirius froze, too, with his hands in his pockets, and then wrapped his little brother up tight.
“It’s not your fault, you know,” Remus heard Regulus murmur softly. “I don’t really think you left me there. With them.”
Sirius made an indistinguishable sound, and Remus took a step back, giving them space and not sure if he was fighting tears or a smile. He used to just think about how he could kill Sirius and Regulus’ parents if he had the chance, but now, seeing how far the brothers had come, he wasn’t sure they were worth the time at all.
“Come home sometimes, okay?” Sirius said. “D’accord?”
“Ouais,” Regulus said.
They pulled apart slowly, both a little bright-eyed. Sirius laughed wetly, wiping his face.
“And make good friends.”
Regulus raised an eyebrow. “I think that’s supposed to be good choices.”
Sirius reached out for Remus’ hand. “Good friends are good choices.”
“Ah,” Regulus hitched his pack farther up his shoulder. “Of course.”
“Call when you get there, too,” Remus cut in. “My mom would definitely want me to say that.”
Regulus waved them off. “Okay, that’s enough parenting. I’m going now.”
Sirius held Remus’ hand tight as they watched Regulus go through security and then disappear with a wave, sliding his headphones on. He let out a long, unsteady breath.
“Merde.”
“Love ya,” Remus smiled, reaching up to wipe a tear from Sirius’ cheek.
Sirius glanced down at him. “He’s going to be fine.”
“He is,” Remus nodded.
“He forgives me.”
“No,” Remus said. “He told you that you never did anything wrong.”
Sirius let out another tearful laugh, sniffing. “Right. You’re right.”
Remus pushed up on his toes to kiss his cheek. “Wanna get dinner?”
“Ouais. That sounds perfect.”
They wandered the summer soft streets, cooled by the evening and by approaching September. Remus was torn between being ready to let summer go, and never wanting it to end at the same time.
~
It’s good to hear a packed Hogwarts Stadium again, huh, Dean? Even if just for a preseason game against our New York Rangers neighbors.
Right, Lee? I love this post-summer feeling, and I know our Lions do, too. Especially excited to see what our new talent has to offer. This’ll be fan’s first glimpse at Lupin and Reyes, our two…well, I suppose rookie wouldn’t be quite as perfect a word for Lupin as it is for Reyes. We’re used to Lupin’s face around here, huh.
That we are. Not used to seeing what is rumored to be some very quick feet on him, though. As far as testing went, that is.
Right, the bike test. As well as strength. Who knows. This could be building up to a very interesting season.
Remus stared up at the TV mounted on the wall as he peddled slowly on the stationary bike, keeping his legs warm. He felt bizarre, and had been dodging any type of media to avoid having to talk about it. He was dreading post-game. Every time he tried to think of something to say, his mind went blank.
I’m happy to be here.
I never thought I would be here.
The other half of his brain was trying to compute that it wouldn’t just be the preseason, practice scrimmages he was used to. It wouldn’t just been his team, his friends, out there. Not that it would be a full fledged game, either. No one looked to crushing blows during a preseason game. It was about getting warm. Remus was thankful for it. He didn’t know how he was going to feel when he put his jersey on. When he stepped out onto the ice. He had been nervous enough for the fitness testing.
“You’re literally the fastest guy here,” Finn had said after he’d gotten off of the bike—with the highest score. It had made him feel better, but he knew he wouldn’t really be settled until until coach called his name from the line card.
“Loops,” Logan said, swinging onto the bike beside him. “I keep running into you.”
Remus smiled. “Looks like we having similar warm-up routines.”
“Apparemment,” Logan nodded, turning up the resistance. “Nervous?”
Remus nodded. “Yeah. I am.”
Logan nodded, but stayed quiet and Remus was thankful. Everyone tried to talk him out of it, Sirius included, and he loved them for that, but at the same time, this was nice, too.
“Me too, sort of,” Logan said, and they traded a smile before looking back up at the Gryffindor pre-game show.
“All right,” Coach Arthur Weasley clapped his hands and gestured to the side of the room where the assistant coaches and staff were standing. The whole locker room was flooded with energy of all kinds—nervous, excited—and it flowed through those not in uniform, too. “We all know Moody. We all know our coaches. Mason, Alexandra, and Dan. We all know our PTs—should I say new PTs—“ there were some laughs. “Lars and Layla.”
“Double-Ls,” Thomas whooped.
Layla gave two thumbs up, and Lars remained stoic, arms crossed. He hadn’t said much since arriving aside from the occasional wise-cracking joke delivered without a trace of a smile.
“Who’s captain serious now, eh?” Thomas leaned in to whisper, and Remus suppressed a smile, glancing at Sirius—who was wearing an almost equally focused expression on his face, completely still where he sat a few stalls down, past Thomas and James. Remus glanced around the locker room, down the crescent-shaped row. Kasey and Leo, on opposite ends, were both geared up. Finn and Leo were sharing AirPods. Remus knew Kasey had worked hard over the summer, rehabbing his thigh, strengthening and increasing flexibility. He knew Leo was happy to be his back-up, but part of him wondered what Leo thought about all the games he had played in the play-offs, only to be placed right back on the bench now. It happened to a lot of guys—some were called up for injury, only to be sent right back down to the farm team when injuries healed. But Remus thought it was different for goalies. He hoped Coach wouldn’t leave Leo sitting on the bench for too long.
“Who’s calling first line?” Coach asked, and held the card out to Sirius. “Cap?”
Remus didn’t realize until the cheers broke out that he could be loud with the rest of them, and gave his stall a few bangs as Sirius rose, hat keeping his hair back. His eyes found Remus’ briefly once had turned towards them with the card, and Remus’ breath caught at his beaming grin.
“Okay, boys, first line,” Sirius said. “We’ve got Pots.”
Clap.
“Tremzy.”
Thomas drum-rolled his stall.
Sirius smiled. “Myself.”
Finn put two fingers in his mouth and whistled.
“And on D, Olli and Timmy.”
While the boys burst into chatter again, Remus watched Sirius hand the card back to Coach, and caught his eye again, raising an eyebrow. Sirius held up Thomas’ number, and Jackson’s. Remus nodded to himself. That could be the third or fourth line, and he’d played well with both of them in scrimmages. It made sense. He could work with that.
And it meant he’d get to watch Sirius out there. At least that wouldn’t change.
“All right,” Coach laughed, putting his glasses back on and turning towards the other coaches. “Get dressed, get dressed.”
Remus had sat in his stall quite a few times by now. For his promo-pictures at the beginning of the summer—the first time he had slipped his jersey on, too, right over his suit and tie. But sitting in it now, strapping his pads over his bare chest before a game, a game where he would be up against other NHL players…that was different.
“You’re one of those?” Thomas snorted, flicking Remus’ bare ribs. “Doesn’t the velcro scratch?”
Remus laughed. “Can’t break old habits.”
Thomas raised an eyebrow. “Or is now the perfect time to make new ones.”
“Not after a year like the last,” Remus said.
“Oh,” Thomas whistled, yanking the laces of his skates tight. “You’re that superstitious.”
“I try not to be,” Remus stood. “But playing again…seems to bring it out in me.”
Remus turned to step into his pants, adjusting the pads and his jock until everything fit together comfortably. He eyed his jersey, the number six hanging proudly on a hanger, and he smiled to himself but turned to his skates next. The jersey sent his heart leaping into his throat. He’d save it for last.
“Let’s go boys,” Pascal called, standing by the door to bump fists and pat helmets on their way out.
Remus laced up his skates, pulling them tight over his taped up socks, and then, finally, removed his jersey from its hook. He didn’t waste time staring down at it. That would just make him overthink and, hopefully, he’d have many times to put this jersey on again.
It slid over his shoulder pads, he tucked in the back, and grabbed his helmet.
“I like that Loops is just over there grinning to himself,” Finn snorted as he left for the tunnel.
Remus shrugged, eyes finding Sirius. He already looked like his mind was on the ice, even for such a low stakes game.
“You know,” Remus said as the team started to file down the tunnel. “I used to go last.”
Sirius’ intense eyes lightened into a softer gray. He shifted from one skate to another. “Oh? I don’t know if I knew that.”
Remus tilted his head, smile playing at one corner of his mouth. “Well? What are we gonna do?”
Sirius just stared at him. “I… I go last.”
Remus let out his laughter, leaning up to tap their helmets together. He vaguely heard a camera flash go off, and smiled. He wanted that picture.
“You should have seen your face, baby,” he whispered, and grabbed his stick from the rack before catching up to James.
He heard Sirius splutter out a laugh—and there was definitely some relief in there—and follow.
The sounds of the crowd in Hogwarts stadium only grew louder. Remus could feel Sirius close behind him.
“Ready, mon loup?” he asked quietly, just before the tunnel opened up to the lights.
Remus didn’t know if Sirius heard his yes over the roar of the team’s entry into a sea of red and gold, but then feet were on the ice he was doing a lap, the Rangers at the other end.
On opening night, Remus knew he would be taking this lap alone, along with Cole. A rookie’s first official NHL game. It felt surreal to think about. He couldn’t knock the feeling that he was too old for that—but he knew plenty of guys did it at his age. You didn’t have to be eighteen.
He picked up a puck and headed towards the goal, trying to decide if it would help to block out the noise, or let it overtake him. The boys were dialed in. Remus glanced over at Sirius, feeling strangely bare without him by his side. But he was over by center ice, tracing the Lion printed there—as usual. Remus didn’t want to seem favored. He didn’t want to seem clingy. They weren’t a couple out here, he knew that. They were teammates.
He shot at Kasey, who caught his puck in his glove, and began the wrap-around again before pushing backwards around the outside of the goal, as he always used to. He’d done his routine a few times at the beginning of practices, but it was nothing compared to being surrounded by a crowd—a bigger crowd than he’d ever actually played in front of before.
Kasey tapped a puck at him once he reached his first post, and he laughed, shooting it back until a sign waving at the glass caught his eye. It was held by a kid, maybe around Julian’s age.
I want a signed stick the ReMOST, Lupin!
Remus laughed at the kid’s wide eyes when he saw that he was looking, and gave him a thumbs up the best he could with his gloves on before holding up his stick.
“One second,” he called over the crowd.
When he got to the bench, Sirius was there stretching, holding out an already uncapped sharpie.
And looks like Lupin’s heading over to sign that young man a stick. I bet that’s a good feeling after—oh! Black’s got a pen ready for him.
Remus shoved a glove under his arm and took it. “You saw the sign?”
“I got the kid down to the glass,” Sirius grinned.
“I love you,” Remus said as he scribbled his signature, complete with the jersey number that players always included.
It took two tries to get the stick successfully over the glass, but for the look on the boy’s face, Remus would have tried twenty.
“Feels good, eh?” James said once the horn blew for warmups and they were settled onto the bench.
“Too good,” Remus said.
“First line,” Coach called, slapping his calling card against his palm. “12, 10, 7, let’s go. Olli, Tims, on D.”
Sirius sent him a quick smile, and Remus spun his stick in front of him. “Let’s go, Captain.”
Sirius snorted, rolling his eyes as he pushed away from the boards towards center ice, where Zibanejad was waiting.
Good to see that sort of…what would you call it, Dean, from Black?
Light energy, I think, Lee. Sirius is well known around the league for his intensity.
Right. Nice to see Lupin getting a smile out of him before what is most probably a season that holds more pressure than usual for the Lions, after a Cup year.
One of Black’s coaches once said in an interview that the only thing Sirius feels after scoring a goal is pressure to score another. Ha, sounds about right.
Remus all but held his breath when the ref dropped the puck. Sirius stole it back for James who nicked it over to Logan. Logan sped it into the neutral zone, narrowly avoiding Lafrenière.
“Bulky kid,” Finn said from beside Remus.
Remus raised an eyebrow. “Logan?”
“Well—yeah, but nah, Lafrenière,” Finn nodded. “Built like a tree, what is he, nineteen? Crazy. I didn’t look like that when I was nineteen.”
“Well,” Remus said as the whistle blew for an icing on the Rangers. “People are comparing him to Crosby.”
“Kuny,” Coach called. “Lupin, Nado.”
Remus’ initial thought was surprise. The shock of being put out with the second line carried him somewhat numbly over the boards beside Evgeni and Jackson. He didn’t have time to look at Sirius take his place on the bench.
“Hey,” Evgeni said, drawing them in with a glove over his mouth so the Rangers filing out of their bench couldn’t read their lips. “I take Lindgren. Loops, go fast, okay? Nado get you puck.”
“Fox,” Jackson warned.
“Sergei take care,” Evgeni said like it was obvious, and loomed towards the face-off circle.
“Left side,” Remus said to Jackson before they parted. “I’ll try to shake Kravtsov.”
“Nice,” Jackson nodded.
Remus and Kravtsov shared a nod as they lined up shoulder to shoulder on the centerline.
“Welcome to the NHL,” Kravtsov said with a slight smile.
“Thanks,” Remus replied.
Kravtsov was so young. All of these guys were so young.
He couldn’t help feeling like time had been stolen from him.
Have you ever seen this many Russian players in one NHL game, Dean? Pretty nice to see. And here’s Lupin’s first shift. Let’s go.
The puck dropped and Remus gave Kravtsov a shove, spinning out and around him. His heart seemed to press the sound out of his ears until all he could hear was his own breathing. Evgeni won the face off.
“Kuns!” Jackson shouted, and Evgeni passed it to him deep in their own zone. It drew Fox forward, just as Remus knew it was meant to, but Sergei was there for Jackson to derail the puck. Fox was forced to turn around, Kravtsov was made to press forward for a pass, and it left Remus free to shoot into their defense zone. Strome tried to cross him, but Remus spun around him. Sergei and Jackson tried to get it to him, but it left the zone. Remus swore as he pushed hard to touch up the neutral zone.
“6, 58, 86, off, Reyes, O’Hara, LeBlanc, on!”
Remus pulled back to the bench, sending Cole a nod as he hopped over the boards for his first NHL shift. Remus’ shift had been thirty seconds that felt like ten, but he was breathing hard. Finn followed Cole with a tap to his back, promptly stole the puck from Chytil, and slapped it into the corner of the Rangers’ goal.
Remus had barely taken a drink of water when the goal horn blared Gryffindor’s roar filled Hogwarts Stadium.
He punched Sirius’ side, who had his arms raised. Sirius laughed from beside him as they settled onto the bench beside each other.
“Ouch,” Sirius rubbed his padding.
“I don’t know, I got excited,” Remus laughed.
They held his gloves out for Finn to tap as he came down the line, the goal song blaring, the crowd chanting along to the catchy drumbeat.
“Nice solo, Harz,” Remus called, and Finn grinned.
“Thanks, Rookie.”
It remained pretty even through the first and second. Panarin had three good chances, the fourth sailing past Kasey’s glove. Sirius scored a dirty wrap-around just before the second’s buzzer, and Remus didn’t think he’d ever like anything more than getting the full force of Sirius’ smile as he tapped gloves down the bench line. No sooner had the final face-off of the period set up than were Evgeni and Lindgren going at it, hands gripping the back of each other’s jerseys as they dropped their gloves. Gryffindor would start the third one man up.
Remus filed back down the tunnel towards the locker room, smiling at Layla as he dropped his gloves in the bucket she was holding to be dried. He felt warm, his muscles used and a little sore. He longed for an ice bath, but he wanted to use them more too. It was the most familiar feeling in the word. He smiled against it as he sat down in his stall, laughing lightly at the way Evgeni threw a wet towel over his head.
“Not skate enough over the summer,” Evgeni groaned.
Remus looked up when a shadow fell over him and was greeted by two hands on his cheeks and a warm, familiar kiss.
“J’adore,” Sirius said.
Remus laughed, holding his wrists where his pulse still high from the game.
“Nice goal.”
“Good to be back,” James said as he pushed his jersey over his head. “Crowd sounds amazing. How you doing, Reyes?”
Cole looked up from where he was re-taping his socks. “The crowd is amazing.”
Remus felt a slap on the back from Evgeni, towel around his neck now. “Good shift, rookie.”
“Kuns,” Remus sighed, and Evgeni just laughed teasingly.
Remus felt Sirius’ eyes on him throughout the entire intermission. He knew he was curious, and had been for months, about Remus’ game routine. He’d asked and asked over the summer, but that was the thing with Remus’ superstitions—he couldn’t talk about them.
Remus took two fresh sticks from his rack and sat back down. He began wrapping it steadily.
“Of course your tape job is perfect,” Thomas sighed, shaking his head. “Of course, of course.”
Remus laughed, ripping the tape with his teeth.
“Speak for yourself,” Jackson grinned, giving his stick a twirl, the tape warped and hurried.
Remus snorted. “All I see is a fucking candy cane.”
Power play. Lindgren went into the box, slamming the door a little too hard on his way.
“Black,” Coach called as the crowd shuffled into their seats, armed with food, and Remus had been expecting that. “Tremzy, Lupin, Fox, Sunny.”
Remus blinked. He hadn’t been expecting that.
Remus hopped the boards beside Sirius, and the stadium seemed to get louder. Sirius knocked their shoulders together, and Remus didn’t doubt the cameras were on them and he tried to control his expression. He didn’t want to look too pleased, or too dopy at the feeling of skating side by side with Sirius in front of a crowd.
I think this is the moment many of us have been waiting for, Dean.
You bet! I didn’t expect it to come so soon. Coach Weasley is trying out lots of different line combos tonight. What’s pre-season for? I hear Lupin’s played on the power play a few times in practice.
Sirius put his glove up by his mouth, holding his mouth guard.
“Try the double pass?” he said quickly.
“Yeah,” Remus nodded. “Let’s do it.”
Sirius bent down across from Zibanejad and the rest of the Rangers penalty kill unit.
It happened fast. Remus was used to seeing this from the bench—but maybe that was a good thing. He saw the ice as if through a wide lens, Sirius passed to Logan, and then it was on Remus’ stick to carry up. Remus blew out a breath, pushing his legs hard ahead of Panarin. He needed to get ahead, needed to stay parallel with Sirius. He felt Panarin scrape at his heels, but then Sirius was calling his name.
Shesterkin was still up and on his feet, reading to dive whichever way.
“Loup,” Sirius called, and it was as though it was only the two of them in the basement rink. Only the crowd was different, and absolutely roaring.
Remus snapped the puck to Sirius, who passed it right back. Shesterkin went down when Remus pulled his stick back in a fake, only for him to give it back to Sirius to tap into wide open net.
Remus’ hands shot up, and the crowd screamed. Sirius all but slammed into him, wrapping him up tight against the boards.
“Re,” Sirius laughed through he words, pressing their helmets together. “Mon loup, mon loup—”
Logan crashed into them next, followed by Adam and Henrik. Remus found himself in the center of elated shouts, the fans pounding hands on the glass from the other side.
“Merde, it sounds like the playoffs,” Logan shouted, pressing a hand to Remus’ helmet.
Remus could only laugh, giddy, high on it all.
What a goal! Well, Lee, I don’t think we’re going to have to wait long to see this young man’s first regular season point.
~
“He fell for it,” Remus said for the tenth time as he handed Sirius the last of their dinner dishes. “Shesterkin fell for it.”
Sirius laughed and slid the dishes into the sink and turned, placing slightly damp hands on Remus’ cheeks.
“You are amazing,” he said, accent heavy and laced with a need that Remus had felt stirring in himself since getting off the ice. They’d been on the ice together today. They’d built a goal together, scored. Igor Shesterkin had fallen for their fake-out.
“I was so happy today,” Sirius whispered.
Remus closed his eyes, caught between the feeling of Sirius’ body colliding with his own in celebration, and the feeling of his warm hands here, now.
“It’s everything I’ve ever wanted,” Remus said softly, and opened his eyes, hands against Sirius’ chest.
What a terrifying, wonderful sentence.
Sirius just leaned in to kiss him, mouth tender and insistent. It was the same fire he had on the ice, leading Remus in a way that made his insides warm and his toes curl. Remus let Sirius guide him slowly up the stairs, and he relished in the way they stopped on the landing, on a half-way stair, just to be closer again, Remus’ mouth on his neck, Sirius’ against his temple. The hallway was dark, lit only by the nightlight they kept plugged in near their feet. It cast Sirius in warm angles as Remus tugged his shirt off and dropped it right there in the hallway.
“I’m not saying I’m not going to miss Regulus,” Remus said as Sirius bent to mouth gently against his neck. “But I’m not saying I’m not going to enjoy being able to undress you wherever I want now that we have the house to ourselves.”
Sirius’ laugh was soft, a little breathless. “Name your room, I’ll be there.”
Remus laughed, too. “Bedroom. Nice, soft bed.”
Sirius walked Remus backwards through the door, hands on his hips. “How do you feel? That was quite the race with Kreider in the second.”
“Good,” Remus nodded, but let Sirius’ strong hands dig into the muscles of his shoulders and back. He sighed into it, resting his cheek against his chest. “But I won’t say no to that.”
Sirius kissed Remus’ temple and worked his shirt over his head. He lay him down on the mattress and Remus closed his eyes at the feeling of Sirius’ lips against his neck, and then his shoulder.
Sirius kissed over the scar that Greyback had torn from Remus’ body all those years ago at their shared college, keeping Remus from a career in the NHL—at least until now.
“I wonder what he thinks,” Remus wondered aloud, and he didn’t have to explain himself for Sirius to know what he meant. Remus wound his fingers into Sirius dark hair as he looked up at him.
“Me too,” Sirius admitted. “And then I see red and have to stop thinking about it.”
Remus half-smiled. “Yeah…I felt bad at lunch those few weeks ago. With Cole. I really think he thought he said something wrong, and I wish I could explain but it’s still…it’s still like this weird secret, you know? Like people could find out if they really looked but no one has? And I don’t really want to bring it up but at the same time I know Fenrir has already spread lies. Saying it was a car crash or…who knows what. Sorry.” Remus pressed a hand to his face. “God, I’m completely killing the mood.”
“Re, hey,” Sirius pushed himself up onto his forearm, falling to the side and keeping their legs tangled.
“And it’s such a good mood, I just was thinking aloud.”
“You’re not. Talk to me. You can talk to me whenever.”
Remus ran his thumb over Sirius’ bottom lip. “Okay…yeah, I know that.”
“This was a big day,” Sirius said. “Huge for you. Of course you would be thinking about him. I used to think about my parents every time I stepped on the ice, even after things were getting better. I think…I think its just time. It takes time.”
“It was strange today,” Remus finally admitted. “I couldn’t…I didn’t know how close to you I could be. Out there, I mean. I’m your boyfriend, you’re mine, but we’re also teammates. There’s so much debate, about my place on the team and if you did something to get me there…I don’t know. I don’t want someone to accuse you of favoritism. You don’t deserve that.”
“We’re both,” Sirius said. “We’ll always be both. You’ll always be the boy I love. You’ll always be my teammate.” Sirius shrugged. “It doesn’t matter if we’re on the ice or not. And I don’t care if someone thinks I favor you. We both know I don’t. Not like that.”
Remus made a soft sound and pulled Sirius further on top of him, making him smile. “Love you.”
Sirius let Remus press slow kisses to his lips. “This mood feels pretty good to me.”
Remus just hushed him, tucking a hand into his waistband.
Sirius kissed him until Remus’ cheeks were hot and his cock was aching, pressed up against his sweatpants. Remus could still hear the Lions’ crowd rushing in his ears. Sirius’ palm cupped him and pushed his sweatpants down. They were both flushed and pink. Remus wanted to see those colors together.
He pulled Sirius’ hips against his own, discarding clothing until it was all bare skin. Remus ran his hands over the hard curves of his back. He had to squeeze his eyes shut, hooking his arms beneath Sirius’, holding onto his shoulders.
Their mouths found each other messily, dragging and half open in gasps.
“Sirius,” Remus breathed, voice higher than usual.
The adrenaline that Remus had thought had faded with the game only seemed to thrum brighter. Remus couldn’t help the smile the crossed his face, brows drawn together at the feeling of Sirius rutting against him.
Remus pressed his ankle gently to the back of Sirius’ knee and rolled them, drawing breathless laughs from both their mouths that he sealed away to keep like a love letter. It was soft mouths and hard hands, clutching each other closer, getting the most out of the warm friction. Remus swallowed Sirius’ gasps. His orgasm built up below his spine and Sirius seemed to read his mind. He reached between them with a hand, brushing a thumb at his base, pressing up. Remus’ hips stuttered and he fell apart, shoving hard against Sirius tight fist.
Sirius followed at the hot streak of Remus’ come between them, and they lay there, panting, foreheads together. Remus eased their hips back together, both of them letting out a soft moan, then a laugh, as the spent cocks brushed, drawing out the last tendrils of their orgasms.
“That feels good,” Sirius mumbled, head sunken back against the pillows.
Remus rolled his hips slowly, bringing them down, and then pulled his head up. He pushed Sirius’ sweaty hair back from his cheek and kissed it.
“Communicate to score,” Sirius mumbled.
Remus laughed hard, squeezing his eyes shut, and dropped his face into his neck to catch his breath.
“It’s true,” Sirius said, running a warm palm up and down Remus’ back. “That article we looked at.”
They’d given in and read some press over dinner, laughing at some of the more excitable writers, and grinning at each other at the more serious ones.
Magnetism, one wrote. Feels like we’ve got some mind-readers on this team, a real Crosby-Malkin, Kane-Toews one-two-punch.
“Well,” Remus said, folding his arms across Sirius’ chest. “What am I thinking now?”
Sirius pressed his lips together, pretending to think. “Is it…how to get out of golf with James and the Cubs before the ring ceremony on Tuesday?”
Remus snorted. “Well, that’s definitely on my list. But nope.” He leaned in, brushing their mouths together. “That’s not it.”
Sirius grinned, and Remus sunk into how thick and sated his accent sounded. “Is it…will my handsome boyfriend please run me a bath and make me tea?”
Remus laughed into their next kiss. “Wow, that writer was right.”
~
It looks…maybe like a twisted knee? What do you think, Dean? Walker is definitely not making a move to get up—oh, there’s the medic. One of the Lions’ new staff members as, of course, someone had to take Lupin’s place. Ah, Walker is pointing to his foot now.
Man, is that a grimace if I ever saw one.
It sure is, Dean.
Here comes O’Hara to help out his teammate.
They were in Madison Square Garden, the Rangers giving them one hell of a re-match. Logan skated a close perimeter towards where Thomas had gone down, just between a line change.
“Shit,” Finn skated to a stop beside him. “It’s fucking pre-season. Did you see what happened?”
Logan shook his head. “Not really. Think it was just a bad fall. Strome looks sorry.”
“Oh, so that’s why you’re not jumping him right now.”
Logan’s mouth quirked up. “I have no interest in jumping Strome, thanks.” His eyes found Leo on the bench. With his hat flipped backwards, the intensity, the worry in of his blue eyes cut a clear path to Thomas.
“T,” Finn said, skating closer. “Need a hand to the room?”
Thomas winced as he made it to one knee. “Yeah, man, thanks.”
~
Thomas stared up at the dark ceiling from the padded PT table, listening to the game continue on the TV mounted to the corner of the ceiling. There was the X-ray pushed to the corner, his results pinned up on the light screen. Fracture. Minor, but it’d take weeks to heal. He’d miss the beginning of the season. He’d be in a suit when they lifted the Stanley Cup champion banner in the stadium. He missed Noelle.
The light flicked on so suddenly Thomas flinched.
“Walker,” said an unfamiliar voice. It was accented—Swedish, he thought. Thomas squinted at the speaker. He was tall, and dressed in the staff jacket he’d come to associate with Remus. Right. Lars.
“I…hey,” Thomas said. His eyes went to Layla, who gave a wave as she slipped in behind the man. “Hey, man, Lars, right?”
Lars gave a short nod. “Nice to meet you. So, you probably know the drill by now. Couple weeks. Aspirin will be fine for pain management.”
“Right,” Thomas nodded.
“We’ve got a boot for you here, but I’d take everything to a doctor, just for a second opinion. I’ll recommend someone,” he shrugged. “That was an unlucky hit. I’m sorry.”
Thomas blinked. He didn’t know someone could seem sweetly uninterested. He smiled hesitantly. “Thanks.”
Thomas snapped a picture of the boot once he strapped it on and sent it out complete with a frowning emoji.
He had just opened the door to the locker room, accompanied by his new crutches and to meet his victorious team, when his phone began to ring with a Facetime.
“T,” Noelle’s voice gasped. She was beautiful, her hair curling around her face. “Baby, I saw.”
“It’s not too bad,” Thomas said beneath the noise as the locker room filled up. “You look like you’re about to go somewhere, I can call back, I just wanted to…”
I’m just sad about it. It sounded lame in his own ears.
He cleared his throat. “Logan, say hi to your sister.”
Logan poked his head into the frame and stuck his tongue out, then left.
“Lolo!” Noelle shouted for the locker room to hear, and Logan groaned.
“Lolo,” Kasey imitated, grinning, and Logan shoved his mask down over his face.
“How is it?” Finn asked, wrapping an arm around him. “Hi, Noelle.”
“Fractured. Couple weeks.”
“Damn,” Finn sighed. “Sorry, T. That was an—”
“unlucky hit,” Thomas laughed. “Preach.”
“Hey, baby, we’re all heading to grab some food, but call you tonight?”
Thomas nodded. “Yeah. Yeah, of course.”
He tried not to feel lonely as the screen went dark. He was in a room surrounded by people. People he loved.
It crept in anyway.

                                      »»————- ♡ ————-««
“let’s see… the decorators are coming at 2, the caterers are coming at 6:30, the DJ is coming at 7…” yoongi reads out loud as he goes down his checklist, “the bartender sent over the special drinks menu which i emailed to you this morning, and- ah, right, the caterers mentioned that they were able to switch the mini hot dogs to sliders instead-”
“oh, that’s great! mini hot dogs just don’t carry the same level of class as teeny little hamburgers…” you narrow your eyes slightly as you clasp your hands in front of your face, tapping your fingers against each other, “what about the chocolate lava cakes?”
“mhm, don’t worry, those are on the menu as well, as per your request,” yoongi pauses, “ah- the people bringing the photo-booths are coming to set them up at 5 - we’ve already cleared out the space for them, so that should be good to go… also, are we putting a limit on photos?”
“a limit?”
“yes, a limit,” yoongi looks up at you and shrugs, “there’s only so much film and it wouldn’t be fair for one person to take ten photos and for another person to not have any at all.”
you immediately scoff before dismissing yoongi with a flick of your wrist, “silly yoongi, you can’t put a limit on fun. just tell them we’re willing to pay for extra film and for one of their workers to hang out at the party and wait until the booths need refilling.”
“there.. is no limit… on fun…” yoongi mutters to himself as he continues to scribble notes down in his notebook, “and… that’s it!” he clicks his pen before tucking it back into his shirt pocket, “pretty much everything has been taken care of. if all goes well, this’ll be a fantastic new year’s eve party.”
“yay!” you throw your hands up into the air before leaning back against your chair with a giggle, “this is so exciting. i love throwing parties!”
“and i love planning parties...” yoongi hums absentmindedly, looking back down at his list, “so i guess we make a pretty good team...”
“teamwork makes the dream work, right?”
“mm.”
a couple seconds of silence ticks by as you scour through your brain for a new topic of discussion
you could... talk about the weather?
or maybe ask him what he did over the weekend?
ask him about what he did on christmas day??
“so…” you clear your throat, smoothing your skirt down before folding your arms on your desk and leaning forward slightly, “you bringin’ any... hot dates to the party tonight?”
wow
that was... not an ideal topic of discussion
also, way to sound like a creep!
“me?” yoongi glances up at you and tilts his head slightly, “well, i’ll be with you.” he pauses, dark brows knitting together, “did you… want me to bring a date?” he shifts in his seat, “i’m sure i can arrange for someone to accompany me if that’s what you want.”
“no!” your eyes widen and you shake your head quickly, “i mean- no, i was just- you know, i just- usually you have a plus-one that you bring to parties and, like, i’m sure that you probably had other new year’s plans that didn’t involve being at the party your boss is throwing- i’m just saying that perhaps, if you were planning on actually bringing someone, i just wouldn’t want to be a cock-block-”
you’re cut off (thankfully) when yoongi’s phone suddenly starts to buzz on your desk
he extends his arm and catches it right as it’s about to fall off (which, admittedly, shouldn’t have been as hot as it was, but yoongi could be sitting there doing nothing and you’d still find it attractive)
he holds a finger up pardon himself and you nod before leaning back a little
“hello? …oh, perfect. yes, i can come and pick them up now…” yoongi trails off, sandwiching his phone in between his ear and his shoulder before pushing his sleeve up a little to check the time on his watch, “i can be there in… roughly half an hour? yes. alright. perfect. see you soon.”
he hangs up with a beep before looking back over at you, “sorry about that! your dress and heels are ready for pick-up. what were you saying before my phone went off?”
“hm?” you clear your throat, “oh! uh… nothing. i was just- you know, small talk. but you can go now if you want to- i mean, obviously you need to go and pick up my outfit for tonight so i’ll just let you go-”
“alright, perfect-” yoongi nods and gets up from his seat, “i shouldn’t take too long but if anything comes up, just call me-”
“yep! you got it, homie-” you shoot finger guns at yoongi before quickly forcing your arms down and shoving both your hands in between your knees so that they won’t do anything like that again
your face flushes bright red as soon as the door shuts behind yoongi and a quiet groan slips past your lips before you smack your forehead down on your desk
jesus
that... was rough, to say the least!
sure, you fumble over your words whenever you talk to yoongi on a regular basis, but it’s never usually this bad...
what’s gotten into you today?!
maybe it’s just the pre-party jitters!
“get it together, y/l/n.” you mutter to yourself, patting your cheeks lightly before pulling your laptop towards you and opening it up
if there’s anyone who can get you get your shit together, it’s hoseok
Y/N Y/L/N (10:12AM): help me
you perk up when hoseok responds almost immediately, your laptop letting out a little ping! from his message
you have half a mind to scold him for not doing work and being on the company’s messaging system but you dO need to talk to him right now so
Jung Hoseok (10:12AM): What did you do this time
Y/N Y/L/N (10:12AM): nothing!! idk what’s wrong with my mouth today i’ve never called anyone homie in my entire life
Jung Hoseok (10:13AM): ?
Y/N Y/L/N (10:13AM): you had to be here to understand :-//
Jung Hoseok (10:13AM): Okay well
Jung Hoseok (10:13AM): I don’t know what I’m supposed to say now
Y/N Y/L/N (10:13AM): can you just come to my office because it’s too much to type out
Y/N Y/L/N (10:13AM): and bring me an iced coffee from the vending machine while you’re at it because yoongi left to pick my dress up
Jung Hoseok (10:14AM): Let me get this straight
Jung Hoseok (10:14AM): You want me to stop working and you want me to go to your office so we can gossip about Yoongi
Y/N Y/L/N (10:14AM): gossip sounds bad
Y/N Y/L/N (10:14AM): ‘discuss’ sounds more professional
Jung Hoseok (10:14AM): …
Jung Hoseok (10:15AM): See you in ten minutes lmao
                                     »»————- ♡ ————-««
“you asked him if he was planning on bringing a date to the party?!” hoseok laughs, leaning back against the chair before folding his arms over his chest and shaking his head, “wow. what, are you going to help him plan his wedding too?”
“don’t say that!” you groan, rubbing your fingers against your temples in tight circles, “i was just trying to start a conversation… i don’t know...”
“start a conversation? about what? about encouraging yoongi to be with someone who isn’t you?”
“keep up the attitude and i’ll reduce your lunch break from one hour and fifteen minutes to one hour and fourteen minutes.” you raise a brow in warning, hoseok gawking before wagging a finger at you
“i’ll report you to HR for abuse of power!” he jokes, his smile faltering when he notices that you still have that mopey, kicked-in-the-gut look on your face, “okay, think about it this way: this party couldn’t have come at a better time, you know? because now you know exactly what you have to do!”
“huh? oh, right.” you nod slowly, “yeah, of course i know what i have to do at tonight’s party.” you snort, pulling away from your desk and sitting up straight, “but... you know, just to make sure that you know what it is that i have to do, would you mind telling me what exactly we’re saying i have to do?”
“y/n. come on.” hoseok presses his lips together before leaning forward, “what do people usually do at new year’s eve parties?” he asks gently, in that infuriatingly condescending tone that people usually use when they’re talking to children
“people share their new year’s resolutions with each other?” you hum, thinking back to the new year’s eve party you were at last year where you ended up talking to a very friendly bartender about all the plans you had in mind for the new year
hm
you can’t help but wonder how he’s doing
“well, yeah, but not quite what i had in mind-” hoseok shakes his head, “what else do they do?”
“they... sing karaoke really loudly?” you frown before letting out a gasp, “oh no! i didn’t think of that! do you think it’s too late to rent a karaoke machi-”
“wow, i really have to spoon-feed this to you-” hoseok slaps his hands against his thighs before letting out a huff, “a new year’s kiss, y/n. does that ring any bells?”
“oh, right! i forgot about that part,” you chuckle lightly, tilting your head back against the top of your chair to look up at the ceiling, “but what does that have to do with-” you pause, head snapping back down to look at hoseok with wide eyes, “oh, you’re saying that i should- with yoongi- hoseok, i can barely look at yoongi for five seconds without breaking eye contact-”
“why not?! its new years! you have to have someone to smooch when it’s midnight. even i have someone to kiss!”
“wait, who are you kiss-”
“and you know what the best part is?” hoseok grins, “you have an excuse to get super drunk tonight! and a drunk y/n is a slightly more confident y/n-”
“oh, i can’t- i can’t ask him, no.” you chuckle nervously, your hands suddenly feeling a little clammy at the thought of asking yoongi to kiss you, “because then he’s going to feel like he has to kiss me because i’m his boss, and the next thing you know, i’m being called up to HR-”
“you’re overthinking this again, y/n,” hoseok sighs, “don’t forget the fact that i caught him checking you out at the halloween party. you have to admit that he’s slightly interested in you.”
“that’s different!” you argue, your brows furrowing, “i was dressed as a sexy friggin’ bunny, for god’s sake!”
“and tonight, you’ll be dressed as a sexy friggin’ boss! the only difference is that you won’t have a little cotton tail and two bunny ears-”
“i don’t know…”
hoseok rolls his eyes at your doubt and resists the urge to get up and slap you across the face to get you to come to your senses
you can’t expect anything to happen between you and yoongi if you’re not willing to do something about it in the first place
he can’t even list out how many times you guys have had similar conversations that always end in you chickening out and changing your mind
you were supposed to make a move at the halloween party but you ended up bailing on the plan at the last minute and hoseok had to listen to half an hour of you whining about it over the phone
he adores you but sometimes he just wants to grab you and yell at you for being such a wimp when it comes to yoongi
“okay, you know what? forget yoongi. i’ll be your new year’s kiss!” hoseok teases, leaning forward before wiggling his eyebrows enticingly, “maybe if people see me canoodling with the boss i’ll finally get the street cred i deserve-”
“you know, i don’t know if i’ve reached that level of desperation quite yet-”
“i’m a great kisser, so it’s your loss...” hoseok kisses his teeth, raising his hands in defense, “anyways, just try not to overthink it. take a deep breath, relax, and hopefully you won’t point any more lame finger guns at yoo-”
“-ooou’re fired!” you stand up and slam your fist down on the desk the moment yoongi steps into the room, hoseok jolting at the sudden announcement, “you are fired, my good sir! you heard me loud and clear!”
yoongi’s eyes widen slightly and he presses his lips together before stepping aside and lowering his head
“what the hell are yo-” hoseok glances over his shoulder and it dawns over him when he spots yoongi standing by the door, “oh! oh. uh, okay. yes... i am... devastated...” he clears his throat as he rises from the chair slowly, “please... give me a second chance? i... won’t do it again?”
you blink, pulling down your blazer slightly before giving him a curt nod
“...okay, but this is your last chance. next time, you’re really fired.” you clear your throat, sitting back down before gesturing towards the door, “you may leave now, mr. jung.”
yoongi nods in acknowledgement when hoseok walks past him and he waits a couple of seconds before speaking up
“sorry. i didn’t realize you were busy because the door wasn’t closed all the way.” he smiles sheepishly, raising the garment bag in his hand, “i just wanted to put your dress in the closet for you.”
“yes! go ahead.” you smile, gesturing towards the closet before sitting back down in your chair
“by the way, i passed by that breakfast place on the way to the laundromat-” yoongi pauses, glancing over at you on his way to the closet, “you know, the place that makes those BLT bagels you like so much?”
“ooh, with the spicy mayo and the avocado?”
“mhm-” yoongi smiles, shutting the closet door gently and turning to face you, “they do chocolate chip waffles now and i thought maybe that’d be something you’d be interested in for future breakfasts.”
“oh, no way!” your eyes widen in excitement, “i’m very interested in chocolate chip waffles for future breakfasts!”
“that’s what i thought.” he chuckles, making his way back towards the doors, “anyway- i’ll be out there if you need me, boss.”
“mhm!”
you immediately get up from your chair as soon as yoongi leaves the room
you told yourself that you were going to wait until tonight but you’ve been thinking about your dress all week and you wanna see it now!!
“dress, dress, dress-” you murmur to yourself like a maniac, your heels clicking against the floor as you jog over to the closet
you push down a squeal of excitement after unzipping the garment bag and getting a good look at your outfit for tonight
you spent hours searching for the perfect dress and it was totally worth it now that you’re looking at it
it’s a navy blue midi-length dress that sort of cinches in at the waist but the skirt itself is relaxed so you don’t need to worry about your legs being constricted
there’s also a high slit in the skirt which is exciting (you had to shave your legs yesterday which wasn’t as exciting)
and it’s a long sleeve dress but the sleeves and sheer and billowy but cap around your wrists
it’s classy but also a little sexy but not like your halloween playboy costume level of sexy
you’re still not sure what possessed you to dress up as a playboy bunny but even you have to admit that that little black dress looked great on you
you zip the bag back up before pushing it aside to sneak a peek at the suit that yoongi will be wearing to the party
he asked if he could keep his suit in your closet and obviously you said yes because it’s yoongi
your eyes light up when you notice something peculiar about his outfit
it’s navy blue as well!!
the corners of your mouth lift in a wide grin, your heart skipping a beat at the thought of you and yoongi (unintentionally, but still) wearing matching colours tonight
heh
                                    »»————- ♡ ————-««
“c’mon, stupid thing...” yoongi frowns to himself as he struggles to tie his tie
he’s been at it for the last ten minutes and it seems like his gummy worm fingers aren’t going to be useful anytime soon
and it probably doesn’t help that he’s using his phone camera as a mirror instead of going to the bathroom to use the actual mirror
he doesn’t know if it showed this morning but he’s been a nervous wreck all day!
he practically zipped out of your office as soon as he had the chance to and he just hopes that you’re not suspecting anything
it’s just that as each day goes by, he gets more and more conflicted over what to do about his feelings for you
this wasn’t supposed to happen!
when he first realized that you liked him, he was flattered and admittedly it was a nice stroke to his ego knowing that his boss was interested in him, but he didn’t know it’d turn into this
he didn’t know he’d end up liking you back
this is a disaster!
he’s not supposed to like you back!
he already tried forcing himself to stop liking you but if anything it’s made things worse
he thought your schoolgirl crush was sweet at first and then one day he found your poor excuse of asking him to stay after hours to help you re-organize your pens was cute and ever since then it’s gone downhill
like the other day when he was eating lunch with you - you took the paper sleeve that holds the chopsticks and you folded it into a makeshift chopstick rest and gave it to him to use and,,. he’d have to be crazy to not find that wildly endearing
yoongi lets out a huff and leans back against his chair as he looks at himself on his phone screen
“good going, moron.” he grumbles to himself before lifting his hand and flipping himself off, “you and your feelings.”
of course, it’s not technically a... bad thing that he likes you back, right?
...but what’s everyone going to think?
he knows that he’s on the list of people getting the christmas bonus (because he helped you type it out) but what if people think he just slept his way to the money??
oh, god
that’s not who he is!
this is too much to think about right now
he just had this suit pressed and he’s not about to ruin it by nervously sweating in it
he’s just going to enjoy this party with you and then deal with his feelings later!
future yoongi can handle it
present yoongi is just going to enjoy the ride B-)
“whatcha up to?”
“-!” yoongi jumps and scrambles up from his seat when he hears your voice all of a sudden, “y/n! sorry, i didn’t hear you come out of... your... office...” he trails off, voice softening slightly as he takes in how beautiful you look in your dress
obviously he already knew what you were going to wear because he was the one who picked up your outfit from the dry cleaner’s but... it’s a different experience actually seeing you in it
beautiful
there’s really no other way to describe it
you look... beautiful.
“i don’t know why on earth you’re wearing a tie to a party.” you snort, eyes flicking down to the tie hanging loosely around his neck, “this isn’t a business meeting, yoongi.” (you decided it’d be best to take hoseok’s advice. no overthinking - just relaxing! and it seems to be going well...)
“oh.” yoongi snaps himself out of his daze before shaking his head, “i… i don’t know why, either. i guess i’m just used to wearing a tie.”
“well, i say ditch it - you know, let loose a little! it’s new year’s eve, after all.”
before yoongi even knows it, you’re stepping towards him and sliding the tie from his neck in one swift movement before tossing it onto his desk
ᵒ ᵍᵒᵈ
you even smell pretty
he freezes when you reach up to undo a couple of buttons on his shirt, his hands gripping the edge of his desk so tightly that his knuckles are stark white
“there we go!” you smile, fixing yoongi’s collar before nodding to yourself, “much better. also, do you think you can help me with my heels? i put them on already but the little buckles are flimsy and i can’t do them because of my nails.” you raise both your hands before wiggling your fingers
“mhm, of course.” yoongi steps aside and gestures towards his chair, “take a seat and i’ll take care of them for you.”
yoongi’s chair squeaks slightly as you sit down on it and you make a mental note to get him a new one
...maybe you should get everyone in the office new chairs to make your crush on yoongi less obvious
hm
lots to think about
“so, do you think anyone’s going to have fun tonight?” you ask quietly, leaning back against the chair, “i’m nervous.”
“i’m sure everyone’s going to have fun, y/n,” yoongi lowers himself onto the ground so that he’s down on one knee before raising your leg so that your foot is pressed against his chest, “they get free food, free alcohol, and there are fun 2021 party hats and stupid 2021 glasses to match. what’s not to love?”
“me. i’m the part they don’t love.” you snort, propping your elbow up on yoongi’s desk before leaning against your fist, “i’m gonna take one step onto the rooftop and immediately ruin the party somehow. i bet the dj will stop playing music and his records will make that awkward scratchy sound.”
“don’t be so harsh on yourself…” yoongi scolds, tucking the thin strap into the buckle and giving it a little tug to make sure it’s nice and secure before lowering your foot gently, “besides, if anyone looks at you weirdly, i can just call security and have them escorted out of the party.” he tuts, smiling up at you as he lifts your other foot
“ooh. careful, secretary min… i might have to give you a raise if you keep sweet-talking me like that.” you joke, pushing the ball of your foot gently against yoongi’s chest teasingly
“oh, yeah? i wouldn’t be opposed to that, boss…” the corner of yoongi’s mouth twitches in a side smirk as he slips the other strap into place, “alright, there we go! heels are nice and secure.”
he gets up from the ground, dusting his knee off before extending his hand to help you get up from his chair, “ready?”
“as ready as i’ll ever be...” you reach for his hand only to pause, your nose scrunching slightly as you pull away, “i don’t know. let’s think this through. do we have to go to the party?”
“well, you are the host.” yoongi points out, “and i planned the whole thing! do you know how hard it was to arrange for a karaoke machine on new year’s eve?” he frowns playfully, “you can’t bail on me like this.”
“i guess...”
“listen- whenever you want to leave, just let me know and i’ll grab the entire plate of sliders, a crisp bottle of champagne, and then we’ll head back down here to eat, drink, and watch the fireworks from your office window.” yoongi tilts his head, his hand still out for you to take, “deal?”
“...throw in the chocolate lava cakes as well and we have a deal.”
                                   »»————- ♡ ————-««
“wow! you really outdid yourself, yoongi.” you nod in approval as you look around, “look at this place!”
you never even knew the rooftop had the ability to look like some trendy upscale bar that sells cocktails for $30 each
“hey, if this secretary thing doesn’t work out, maybe i could become a party planner.” yoongi jokes, lifting his glass up with a smile
“you know, i really think you could.” you clink your glass against his before taking a sip of the bubbly champagne, “by the way, you don’t have to hang out with me all night. you’re allowed to go and mingle with your coworkers.”
“i know.” yoongi hums before his nose scrunches slightly, “but every time i talk to them, they’re always gossiping about something and i think gossiping is unproductive.”
“wha-” you gawk, your lashes fluttering, “you’re telling me that you’ve had access to juicy office gossip this whole time and not once have i ever heard any of it??”
“i mean...”
“you have to tell me something. i’ll take anything!”
you grin excitedly when yoongi gestures for you to come in closer
“jungkook and tzuyu had sex on the photocopier by the supplies room.” he blurts out quickly, clearing his throat before taking a sip of his own champagne, “but you didn’t hear it from me!”
“they- what?!” you gasp in shock, jaw practically dropping to the floor, “they did?? during work??”
“no, it was after work!” yoongi shakes his head, “i think you had a meeting across town that night which is why we weren’t here... otherwise we... probably would’ve heard it but- it’s on the CCTV security cameras and everything. of course, since the photocopier is kind of out of frame, you can only see their lower halves-”
“well, then how do you know it was jungkook and tzuyu??”
“their shoes! and jungkook’s socks. he’s the only one who wears bright purple rubber-duckie socks to work.”
the two of you turn to look at jungkook across the rooftop and you blink before looking back over at yoongi with a pout
“that’s my favourite photocopier.” you mutter, “i hope they didn’t get any... fluids inside of it-”
“gross! why would it be inside of the machine?!”
“i don’t know! people go crazy during sex sometimes!” you raise your hands in defense before clearing your throat quietly, “okay, but seriously, i feel like having vigorous sex on a piece of office equipment is definitely violating something so i might have to bring them in for a little chat-”
“ooh, can i be there when you scold them?”
“absolutely-”
“miss y/n?” you jump in surprise when someone taps your shoulder gently from behind
you glance over your shoulder to see joy before smiling politely, turning around fully to face her, “joy! what’s up?”
“i’d like to talk to you about something, if that’s alright - do you have a moment?”
“oh! um, of course-” you pause, turning to hand yoongi your glass, “let’s head over there for some privacy. what’s on your mind?”
“it’s just... you know, regarding past comments i may or may not have made about you-” she chuckles uneasily, “seeing as you still have to figure out who’s getting christmas bonuses this year, i thought that-”
yoongi bites back a grin when you turn back to look at him with pleading eyes and he shrugs helplessly before raising his own glass at you and downing the rest of the champagne
                                  »»————- ♡ ————-««
yoongi’s never been a huge fan of parties mainly because he’d much rather enjoy a bottle of champagne and full-sized burgers in the comfort of his own home
he really only started going to parties once you became CEO of the company and he wasn’t left with a choice because he was worried that you’d fire him if he didn’t attend any of these festive celebrations
he likes to think that you’ve opened him up to new experiences, helping him become a better human being overall
:-)
“hey!” yoongi chokes on his tiny burger patty when someone gives his back a hearty slap, “i’ve been looking for you everywhere! i have a bone to pick with you, min yoongi.”
yoongi’s brows furrow in confusion when it’s hoseok that plops down on the bar stool next to him
“what-” yoongi swallows his bite before giving his chest a couple of pats to help get the masticated chunks of meat down smoother, “what did i do??”
hoseok opens his mouth to say something before pausing, eyes flickering to the side as he reconsiders what he’s about to say
he’s a little tipsy thanks to the open bar so he didn’t really think this decision through but he’s here now so it’s a little late to back out
you explicitly asked him not to meddle but he feels like if he doesn’t do anything, then you’ll never do anything and you’ll just go to the grave keeping your feelings for yoongi a secret
does this count as meddling?
he just has to find a way to steer the conversation towards the topic of you and yoongi and romance
this might be meddling, now that he’s thinking about it
...
it’s fine!
he’ll do it in such a subtle way that yoongi won’t even notice!
“it’s not something that you’ve done. it’s something that you haven’t done.” hoseok clears his throat, narrowing his eyes at yoongi suspiciously, “do you like y/n? because she likes you.”
(not very subtle, but hoseok never likes to beat around the bush.)
“woah-” yoongi’s eyes widen in surprise and he lets out a nervous chuckle before looking around, “ha, i- um- where did you get that idea from?”
“you didn’t deny it.” hoseok grins in success, “so you do?”
“i...” yoongi pokes his tongue against the inside of his cheek before he lets out a huff and his shoulders droop in defeat, “yeah. yeah, i do. ...but what does that have to do with you?”
“oh, it has everything to do with me!” hoseok chirps, clapping his hands together excitedly, “i’m here to give you advice!”
“yeah, okay,” yoongi immediately scoffs and rolls his eyes as he turns back to pick up his drink, “no offense, but i don’t think i should be getting advice from the guy who was almost fired today-”
“oh, please, i wasn’t getting fired when you walked in.” hoseok raises a brow, “we were talking about you before you barged in so y/n obviously panicked and changed the subject to make it look like she wasn’t going all goo-goo-ga-ga over you-”
“what? you were- y/n was talking about me?” yoongi perks up, his interest in the conversation suddenly reigniting, “really?”
“she’s always talking about you,” hoseok points out, “don’t get me wrong - i love going to her office to talk about you instead of doing my work, but it’s exhausting! which is part of the reason as to why i’m willing to give you advice to get this show on the road.”
“i don’t need advice, though.”
“of course you need advice. if one of you finally made a move, i wouldn’t need to give you advice, but here i am.” hoseok gestures to himself before shrugging, “so... what’s wrong with you?”
yoongi scoffs in offense
that’s a little ruDE
“what’s wrong with me?”
“yeah. why haven’t you made a move yet if you like y/n back?” hoseok emphasizes as a reminder that this crush goes two ways and that yoongi can be blamed for the lack of action just as much as you
“because... i can’t! it’s not that easy, man.” yoongi shakes his head, “i can’t just ask her out. she’s... like... she’s miss y/n.”
“yes. and the sky is blue.” hoseok frowns, “i’m sorry, what’s the problem?”
“she’s the boss!” yoongi snaps, glaring over at hoseok, “she’s our boss!”
“exactly! she’s the boss! if you’re going to date someone in the office, it might as well be the person signing off everyone’s paycheques at the end of each month-”
“but you can’t- the rules!”
“what rules??”
“there are no rules! that’s why i’m so confused! i’m used to rules! that’s how the world works in my head! what the hell am i supposed to do now? go rogue?! i’ve never gone rogue before!”
“oh, god, who do you think you are? some secret agent? all you’re doing is asking someone out-”
“i can’t date y/n-”
“give me a legitimate reason as to why you can’t date y/n.”
“i’ll be penalized!”
“who’s going to penalize you?!”
“the boss of our boss!”
“please!” hoseok groans loudly, throwing his head back in frustration, “you don’t think he’s goofed around with any of his secretaries?”
“okay, but this isn’t me goofing around with y/n, this is me... being serious with y/n!” yoongi presses his lips together, unsure of what to say next, “yeah. i wanna be serious with y/n.”
“i promise you that no one cares about relationships as long as work is handed in on time and bags of money are being made.” hoseok hums, gesturing for the bartender to fix up another drink for him
having this conversation about you with yoongi is just as exhausting as having this conversation about yoongi with you
...
he doesn’t know if that sentence made any sense but all this alcohol is making the words jumble up together
“well, okay, but-” yoongi chuckles nervously, turning and setting his glass down on the bar countertop, “then we’d have to make a file with HR declaring the status of our relationship, and then we’d have to talk about whether or not we want to keep things private or let the whole office know- oh, god, and what if it doesn’t work out? what if we break up? it’d be embarrassing after having declared our love for each other in front of everyone! and favouritism! don’t even get me started on favouritism! people are going to bag on y/n if they find out that i’m on the list of people getting a bonus! ...but, in my defense, even if we weren’t together i would probably still be on that list because i’m hardworking-”
“yoongi-” hoseok interrupts, slapping both his hands down on his shoulders before letting out a sigh, “do you like y/n?”
“yes.” yoongi answers without missing a beat, “i like y/n. a lot.”
“okay. then that’s all that matters, right?”
yoongi opens his mouth to respond but he pauses
huh
that... is a fair point...
it shouldn’t matter what anyone else thinks about his relationship with you
what is it about alcohol that makes some people so wise?
“do you know what kind of a person you’d be if you just repressed your feelings and pretended that they didn’t exist at all? a coward, that’s what you’d be. because y/n is a fantastic woman and you need to hurry up and make a damn move before she realises she’s wasting her time on you and moves on to someone else who isn’t afraid to show their true feelings for her.” hoseok shakes his head gently before pulling away from yoongi with a nonchalant shrug and a snort, “but, you know - i’m drunk as hell and i’ve had nothing to eat so all the things coming out of my mouth righ’now could be complete and utter bullshit!” he hiccups, giggling to himself, “who knows!”
“well… what do you suggest i do?”
“what else do you do at a new year’s eve party?” hoseok’s head flops to the side, the over consumption of nothing but champagne suddenly hitting him like a brick wall
“…share new year’s resolutions?”
“wha- god, you guys are truly the perfect pair- no, dumbass, you kiiissss someone at midnight.” hoseok slurs, “you already know she’s into you. and now i know that you’re into her so she’s definitely not going to oppose giving you a big ol smooch!”
“well, it’s-” yoongi pulls his sleeve up to check his watch, anxiety bubbling in his stomach when he realizes there are exactly twelve minutes to midnight, “oh, god.”
okay
that’s fine!
it’s fine, he can work with twelve minutes!
all he has to do is 1) find you, 2) start a casual conversation, 3) somehow transition the casual conversation into a not so casual conversation about his feelings for you, 4) transition from the not so casual conversation to asking if you’d like to be his new year’s kiss, 5)-
“i can’t pull this off in twelve minutes. i don’t know how i’m going to do this!” yoongi swallows thickly, turning to look at hoseok (who’s starting to doze off), “how the hell am i going to do this??”
hoseok picks himself up off the counter, turning to face yoongi before a wide smile spreads on his face and a little gasp of excitement slips past his lips, “hey! i’ve been looking for you everywhere. i have a bone to pick with you, min yoongi-”
“okay, buddy-” yoongi quickly reaches out to keep hoseok from toppling over, “you’ve definitely had one too many-”
                                  »»————- ♡ ————-««
ding!
yoongi steps off the elevator with a huff, quickly checking the time on his watch for the millionth time tonight
he spent two minutes running around the rooftop like a headless chicken in case you were still up there somewhere
luckily jungkook told him that he saw you leave the rooftop and there’s really only one other place that you’d be
he makes his way down the hallway towards the double doors of your office, smiling in success when he sees that one of the doors is slightly ajar
bingo!
maybe it’s because he’s now confident about his true feelings for you, but he feels like there’s a spring in his step right now!
(it could also be because of the liquid courage, but that’s neither here nor there.)
he pushes the door open a little to stick his face in, giving himself a mental high five as he sees you leaning against your desk with a flute of champagne in your hand, staring out the window
“hey!” yoongi clears his throat, knocking on the door gently, “there you are.”
“hm?” you turn to glance over your shoulder, “oh, yoongi! yeah, hey.”
“i didn’t realize you’d disappeared... i would’ve brought the sliders with me if i knew you were in here.” he jokes, shutting the door behind him with a quiet click, “everything okay?”
“ah, well. maybe next time.” you smile stiffly, turning away from him to look back out, “yeah, everything’s fine. joy practically talked my ear off up there so i just felt like i needed to get away from the party for a little while.”
“you know, the fireworks are starting soon...” yoongi points out as he makes his way over to you, “you’re probably going to get better pictures of them up there than down here in your office.”
“yeah, i know… but it’s also going to be very loud up on the rooftop and i’d prefer to start the new year off with working eardrums.” your nose wrinkles as you let out a chuckle, “also, i…”
“what?”
“i… i don’t know, i just don’t really want to start the new year awkwardly standing in the middle while everyone else is getting new year’s kisses.” you reach up to scratch the back of your neck before chuckling awkwardly, “that… makes me sound like a very bitter single person and i swear it wasn’t supposed to come off that way-”
“no, i totally get it.” yoongi shakes his head as he wipes his hands on the side of his pants, “as a matter of fact, i kind of wanted to talk to you about something-”
“hold on, hold on- before you say anything, i-” you interrupt him, turning to set your glass down, “i, um- i have something that i wanna say to you as well. can i go first?”
“oh! yes, okay….” yoongi cowers down a little, pressing his lips together tightly, “is... everything alright?”
“yeah!” you nod quickly before pausing, “i mean, sort of. kind of. i’m… not sure if it’s going to be a good idea or not, but i just want to let you know that if you… you know, if you feel uncomfortable or something after i tell you this, you’re free to pack up and leave, you know? i mean, i actually already have a letter of recommendation written for you so if you wanna go off and work for someone else, i’ve already put in a lot of good words for you-”
“woah, woah-” yoongi raises his hands before letting out a chuckle, “i- while i definitely appreciate the gesture, you know i’m… not planning on going anywhere, right?”
“yeah, well… things change!” you clear your throat, gaze averting as you reach up to scratch the back of your neck, “things... change. i… don’t mean to sound so elementary school about it, but i…” you trail off, the little voice in the back of your head reminding you that this is your last chance to back out and not tell yoongi about your feelings for him
you’ve chickened out more than a handful of times, so what’s going to different about this time around?
you look up at yoongi and he blinks twice before offering you a soft smile, “you…?”
oh
how are you supposed to back out when he’s looking at you like that?
and maybe it’s just because he looks particularly handsome tonight in his suit or because you’re all riled up on cocktails, but...
“i like you.” you blurt out, trying your best not to cringe or make any faces, “like… in a… romantic? way?”
yoongi’s eyes widen and the smile fades from his face, though you don’t have much time to process whatever reaction that was before he’s speaking up
“you like me.” yoongi repeats, swallowing thickly before nodding, “in a romantic way.”
“yeah.” you shrug, “and i have for a while, but i just never said or did anything about it because i thought it was inappropriate - you know, because i’m your boss and around the time i started liking you was when we held that seminar for workplace harassment and i didn’t want to make you feel like i was harassing you or creeping on you or anything - a-anyways, at first i thought i was attracted to you solely because you’re hot in that broody, college skater-boyfriend kind of way and i thought it’d go away on its own, but then the feelings never went away, and then i thought that maybe this was just a more serious schoolgirl-type crush that would take time to go away, but then a lot of time went by and it still didn’t go away, so… here we are now, at the end of the year, and i… still have a huge, huge crush on you-”
“-i like you too.”
“okay, cool, but i’m not done talking about-” you pause, your eyes flickering upwards, “wait, what?”
“i like you, y/n.” yoongi breathes out with a smile, his shoulders visibly relaxing, “actually, i’ve known for a long time that you liked me and at first i was just flattered and admittedly i was a little cocky about it but then i... actually started to like you one day and- well, i didn’t want to say anything because- woah-!”
yoongi yelps when suddenly a paperweight is hurled in his direction and nearly whacks him in the face, “what the f-”
“are you kidding me, yoongi?!” you snap, slapping your hands down as you glare at him across your desk, “are you kidding me?!”
“okay, i-i-” yoongi stammers, “i wasn’t expecting this reaction so i’m not entirely sure how i’m supposed to-”
“you knew that i liked you this entire time-” you groan, reaching up to pinch the bridge of your nose, “and you knew that you liked me this entire time... and you didn’t say or do anything about it?!”
“well, why didn’t you do anything about it first?” yoongi exasperates, “you- you’re just as much at fault here as i am!”
“because i-” you laugh lightly in disbelief, “because i thought that if i told you that i liked you, that you would feel pressured into saying that you liked me back because i’m your boss! how would i know if your feelings were genuine or if you were just playing along? of course i couldn’t tell you!”
yoongi chews on the inside of his cheek anxiously as you let out a huff before stepping away from your desk and heading over to stand by the window again
“i...” he trails off, bending down to pick up the paperweight before setting it down on your desk gently, “i’m sorry that you... struggled with that... but... i think the important thing is that i do like you, y/n. i genuinely like you, and i was an idiot for not saying anything earlier... i let my doubts get in the way and...” he sighs, reaching up to scratch the back of his neck, “i’m not good at- i’m not good at dealing with this kind of stuff and usually i just brush it aside and hope the problem goes away but i see you almost every single day so i couldn’t just brush it aside-”
“yeah, well-”
both of you freeze up when you suddenly hear the countdown chanting echo from up on the rooftop and yoongi feels his heart plummet to his stomach when he realizes he didn’t even ask if you wanted to be his new year’s kiss
shit
shit!
“i’m just-” yoongi shakes his head furiously, “i get nervous when there are no rules and there certainly isn’t a handbook for what to do when you’re attracted to your boss-”
10!
you let out a scoff as you turn to face him, “-and you think there’s a handbook for what to do when you’re attracted to your secretary?!-”
9!
“i was a total coward for not saying anything sooner and i wish i did! i wish i kissed you at the halloween party!”
8!
“you- you wanted to kiss me at the halloween party?”
7!
“of course i did, dumbass!” the name slips out of yoongi’s mouth before he even realizes it and he smiles sheepishly when you give him a warning look, “...miss dumbass.”
6!
“anyways,” yoongi coughs, “i-if you’re still interested, i’d really like to kiss you tonight if that’s okay-”
5!
“wait, did hoseok put you up to this?” you narrow your eyes in suspicion before pointing to yourself, “because he told me to ask you to kiss me tonight-”
“yeah, he put me up to this because we both know that you certainly weren’t going to make the first move-”
4!
“how dare you?” you scoff, crossing your arms stubbornly, “i could make the first move if i really wanted to-”
3!
“what?! that’s bullsh- oh my god, can we agree now to kiss first and then argue about this later?!” yoongi snaps, eyes full of panic at the thought of not making it on time, “please??”
2!
“fine, but-”
1- HAPPY NEW YEAR!
you don’t get a chance to say anything else before yoongi swoops in swiftly to lean in and kiss you, warm hands quickly reaching up to cup either sides of your face
the sound of people cheering and fireworks going off in the sky is nothing compared to the erratic thumping of your heart and the high-pitched ringing in your ears
oh, wow
your lashes flutter as you feel yourself relax, your fists uncurling against yoongi so that your hands rest on his chest
you can feel his rapid heartbeat through his shirt and that’s all the confirmation you need to know that yoongi really, truly likes you back
yoongi’s hands leave your face so that he can reach down to grasp your hips and pull you towards him, only for his arms to snake around your waist a second later
your hands slide up his chest before your arms wrap loosely around his neck, feeling as though nothing else matters except what’s happening right now
you’ve dreamt about this moment for so long but it’s so much better than you could’ve possibly imagined it to be
and you’re not sure if it’s the copious amount of champagne that you consumed tonight but you just feel so warm inside
yoongi pulls away (far too soon for your liking), his eyes lidded and hazy as he smiles fondly down at you, “happy new year, boss.”
you can’t fight back the wide grin on your face when he leans down to nudge his nose against yours, both of your hearts undoubtedly beating in time
“happy new year, secretary min.”

“Director Shepard?”
You approach her, feeling very young, with a question and a smile.
She turns, smiling at you softly. “Yes?”
Her lecture was immaculate - she covered a broad swath of topics - being the first female director of NCIS, her history in international relations and liaison work with British and Israeli intelligence - all of which paved a bit of a roadmap for success in federal law enforcement.
You introduce yourself and shake her hand. “I’ve gotta tell you it was a challenge to choose between agencies in my applications, I admire your work both as an agent and director of NCIS and I was wondering…”
You lose your nerve a bit, but steel yourself again and ask.
“... Would you be willing to meet with me and talk about your career trajectory a little more?”
There’s a light in her eyes as she studies you with a kind of supreme benevolence and gentleness. “I would.”
+++
“Alright,” she says, setting her napkin in her lap. “What do you want to know?”
You laugh a little, “Is everything a good place to start?”
She laughs, and you’re immediately drawn to her warmth. There’s a kind of fire in her, and it doesn’t just come from her hair. “Not at all. Though I’ll give you some unsolicited advice now, to save some time. Find someone you can follow, someone you can learn from.”
She goes on to tell you about her mentor, still on the Major Case Response Team under her purview at NCIS. Though she’s his boss now, she tells you that she still goes to him for advice, for friendship.
“Trusting the people you work with always comes first. It’s not always possible, but when you can manage it. It makes everything better. Always protect them where you can, and don’t ignore the politics”
You do everything except take notes as she tells more stories, how she’s switched from “probie” to Agent to diplomat to Director, before she turns back to you.
“Do you know which unit you’re interested in, yet?”
You shake your head. “Not yet. I’m hoping I’ll have a better idea when the Quantico unit chiefs start coming in to lecture. I’m hoping one of them will catch my interest.”
“Great idea. When one of them does, give me a call. I think any unit could benefit from someone like you.”

Agents Hotchner, Morgan, and Gideon have your attention the moment they step into the room. They’re confident, with a sharp kind of intelligence you admire.
The world of the BAU is fascinating. Serial killers, sex criminals, the very worst of depraved humanity is their everyday. While it sounds somewhat horrifying, it compels you.
Agent Hotchner especially catches your attention. He’s confident in a kind of serious, bladed way. Clearly intelligent, he commands the attention of everyone in the room and effortlessly wields his authority among curious students and his fellow agents.
You’d think Agent Gideon would be the obvious leader, what with all his years of experience and seniority, but even with his grasp of a field he shaped, he doesn’t hold a candle to Hotchner.
With your half-hour-old knowledge, you put together a quick profile of the remaining figure.
Agent Morgan, while strong and clearly an alpha male, brings a skepticism with him. It hangs in the air around him and seems to apply to both of his colleagues. There’s something about Agent Gideon that makes him uneasy, distrustful. He tends to shift his weight away from him when they get too close to each other.
He’s not overt about his skepticism regarding Agent Hotchner, but you get the idea there’s more under the surface you couldn’t possibly know just by studying his behavior in a lecture hall.
This is fun.
You hide your smile in your notebook, jotting down a couple of notes as Agent Gideon continues his “brief overview of profile-driven serial killer arrests.”
+++.
“Director Shepard’s office.”
“Hi Cynthia,” you greet her secretary. “Is Director Shepard in?”
She connects you, and you ask about the BAU.
“Is Jason Gideon still the unit chief over there?” She asks. You can already hear her typing and you’re more than a little concerned about her tenacity in this moment.
“No, ma’am, it’s Agent Hotchner, now.”
“Perfect.”

You’re called into SSA Radner’s office the following Monday to “discuss some changes to your academy courses.”
That doesn’t sound good.
SSA Radner, an imposing and intimidating woman, is the SSAIC in charge of your NAT class - the person in charge of your collective fates.
No pressure.
She opens the door when you knock, gesturing to the chair on the other side of her desk. “Please, have a seat.”
You chuckle nervously. “Thanks, Agent Radner.” You note her little smile as she sits at her desk, and chance a question. “Have I done something, I dunno, wrong? We don’t seem to find much good news in the SAIC’s office at my rank.”
That pulls a laugh from her. “I wouldn't worry too much. I have a proposition for you. It’s...unusual, but not unheard of.”
Your brow crumples a little and she exhales.
“It might actually be better if - yeah. Hold on.” She clicks her intercom and her assistant chirps from the other side.
“Yes ma’am?”
“Please send them in. I’d like to do a joint briefing.”
Joint briefing? What is this, the third invasion of Iraq?
The door opens behind you and you whip around, finding Agent Hotchner and IOS Section Chief Erin Strauss.
What the fuck?
Either you’ve done something terrible or insane and you’re not sure which.
Chief Strauss addresses you first, shaking your hand. You introduce yourself for good measure but have a feeling she already knows who you are.
“It’s come to our attention that you have ambitious interests and are taking exceptional steps to make the most of your education and training at the academy. Is this a fair assessment?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Agent Hotchner steps forward, sort of looming over you with something that isn’t quite a stern look. You take his hand when he offers, introducing yourself and ignoring the jolt of energy that shoots up your arm at his touch.
His handshake is firm, his hands dry and warm. He looks different up close, younger, maybe. There’s the barest touch of grey at his temples, the beginnings of lines around his mouth and eyes.
Not what I expected.
What did you expect?
How old could he be? Thirty-five, maybe?
Shut up.
He’s handsome.
Shut up!
His face relaxes a little bit before he speaks. “Director Shepard, a close professional colleague, has been a staunch advocate for you and your talents. She approached me about taking you on, giving you case hours in lieu of some coursework.”
“You’d have some catching up to do, as it’s already three weeks into your twenty, and we’d transfer you into the profiling classes,” Agent Radner adds. “But with your diligence, I doubt you’ll have trouble with the added workload.”
“No, ma’am. That should be fine. But,” you look between the three of them, “what does ‘case hours in lieu of some coursework’ mean, exactly?”
“You’d be on assignment with the BAU until you received your formal assignment following successful completion of the academy, with the possibility of assignment with the BAU as a full-fledged agent.” Chief Strauss rattles off the information as if it’s the thousandth time she’s said it.
It might be.
You can’t even fathom how much effort and time must have gone into this decision. The realization leaves you speechless.
She prompts you again. “Does that sound like an opportunity in which you’d be interested?”
“Oh, yes, ma’am.” You feel a little stupid, but you’re rewarded with a proud smile from Agent Radner.
You could also swear you saw a twitch of Agent Hotchner’s lips, but he doesn’t seem to be a man who smiles much.
+++
“So this’ll be your desk,” Agent Jennifer-but-my-friends-call-me-JJ Jareau says, pointing to one of the many desks in the bullpen.
You set your bag down with a little smile, feeling more than a little overwhelmed.
Agent Morgan pats your shoulder as he passes your desk. “You’ll do just fine, kid. Ready for a case briefing in ten?”
“Sure.”
His blinding smile eats up his whole face and you like him already. He’s different than you thought he’d be, but you still don’t think your preliminary profile was too far off.
Agent Gideon, still holed up in his office, has yet to acknowledge you.
Your eyes keep wandering to the open blinds, behind which Agent Hotchner and a woman you understand to be his wife have a quiet, apparently heated argument on either side of his desk. Except for the tight set of her mouth and the angry glint in her eye, she seems lovely.
Derek follows your gaze. “Wasn’t always like that.”
You look at him, a little furrow in your brow.
Should he be telling me this?
“She’s not always here either, but their son, Jack, has been sick, so it’s been… tense.” Derek shakes his head. “You wouldn’t catch me married in this job, not once.”
That pulls a laugh from you.
Emily, sitting at the desk beside you, turns in her chair. “Remind me to drink to that later.”
Derek snorts and picks up a couple of files, headed up to the round table room.
+++
Your first case briefing is, well...brief. The case seems fairly straightforward and you run through relevant vocabulary while JJ outlines the case details.
Preferential offender, keeps his victims for no more than three days, victims found in public places.
He wants them found, and fast.
Need-based, maybe? What are his priors?
You’re all dismissed with a brisk, “Wheels up in thirty.”
You pack your things a little slower than probably called for. Hotch disappears into his office again, closing the door behind him. When you pass the window, his wife is tucked under his chin.
Hotch’s eyes flicker to yours and you quickly train your gaze on the floor, hustling down the stairs.
+++
You land next to each other when you board the plane. You do your best to avoid taking anyone's assigned seat.
With a team of this size, you can only assume they have such things.
And they do.
Gideon, Spencer, Morgan, and Prentiss take a seat at the table while JJ perches on the arm of the couch.
Hotch settles at the informal “head” of the table, leaning on the chairs across the aisle. You take a seat in one of the chairs in the row next to him, trying to stay out of the way.
“C’mere, kid,” Derek says, beckoning you forward. “You’re on this team.”
You shuffle forward in your seat, leaning forward with your elbows on your knees and case file open in your hands. “I’m ready.”
JJ smiles at you, and you almost feel comfortable.
+++
You end up alone with Hotch in the precinct conference room after you land, unboxing files and sorting them for Spencer. Until you know enough to make yourself useful, you’ve made it your mission to handle the tedious and the clerical.
Hotch pauses every once in a while as if he wants to say something. You continue on your way. When he’s ready, he’ll stop you.
“I’m sorry about earlier. My wife, Haley, she -”
You look up, waving him off with a little smile. “It’s okay, Hotch. It’s none of my business.”
He looks at you for a minute, studying your face with a bit of a squint. “You mean that.”
It’s not a question.
You’re confused.
“Of course.” A nervous laugh leaves you. “I mean, you’re welcome to tell me if you want, but it’s nothing I need to speculate or gossip about or, God forbid, profile.”
The shock and relief war on his face until it settles back into something that looks like his usual severity, but a little softer. He doesn't say anything else, but you have the sneaking suspicion you passed a test neither one of you prepared for.
Spencer and Emily return from their trip to the medical examiner’s office.
“Who organized these?” Spencer asks, pointing at the neat piles you made.
“Me.” You look up from another box you’re working on. “Would it be helpful if they’re sorted another way? I went chronologically and then by number and type of offenses, with preferential offenders that match the M.O. on top, when possible.”
Emily, Hotch, and Spencer freeze, staring at you like you grew another head in front of them.
You’re suddenly and violently self-conscious. “What?”
Spencer snaps out of it first, shaking his head and picking up a stack. “Nothing that’s just...um…”
“Exactly right,” Emily supplies. She glances at Hotch before looking back at you. “Thanks.”
“No problem.”
Hotch is the last to break, but the curious little glances he keeps throwing your way always linger a little too long.
To your credit, you ignore them.
+++
“So, how are you liking it so far?” Derek slides into the driver’s seat and rolls out of the parking lot.
You’re headed to another witness’s house under direct orders to observe and as a few (carefully directed) questions. Derek insisted on bringing you himself while the others keep busy with something else.
“I’m liking it,” you reply.
He laughs. “Coulda fooled me.”
You screw up your face and look over at him. “What do you mean?”
“Well,” he says through a laugh, “when you’re not making yourself ridiculously useful, you look terrified.”
“I am terrified.”
“Nothin’ to be scared of as long as you keep asking questions,” he says.
It’s almost like he doesn’t know how ridiculous he sounds.
“You’re joking, right?” You turn to face him, shifting in your seat. “Agent Morgan -”
He cuts you off. You’re pretty sure that’s just how he is - he interrupts the other members of the team frequently and fearlessly. “- Derek. Or Morgan.”
“Fine. Morgan, you have to know that your team is legendary. I don’t even know why -”
“- Don’t say it.” He flags his hand before putting it back on the wheel. “You’re here for a reason, and none of us are going to let you fall so hard you can’t pick yourself up, okay?” He glances over, meeting your eyes. “We’ve got your back.”
You quirk a smile. “Thanks.”
“And,” he adds, “Hotch seems to like you alright. That’s half the battle.”
“What’s the other half?”
He snorts. “Gideon. And local law enforcement.”
+++
You settle in a little easier after that. JJ’s your next target as you help her make some calls to the D.A.’s office.
You hang up and take a breath, slumping back in your chair. It’s been a long day already and it’s not even lunchtime.
“Hanging in there?” JJ asks, smiling at you over her files.
You nod. “Yeah. Just a… different kind of energy than the academy, I think.”
“I felt that way when I got here, too. Gideon was unit chief back then and Spence had just started, too.” She huffs a laugh. “It was a little easier when there were more newbies, but then…” Her face clouds over and she shakes her head.
“Then...what?”
She looks up at you and her mouth twists. “Boston.”
+++
“Hey, Derek?”
“Yeah?” He keeps his eyes on the road, but he can hear the trepidation in your voice.
The dark interior of the car feels safe in the early hours of the morning, headed back to the hotel. “You said I could ask you anything, right?”
His eyebrows pinch. “Shoot.”
“What happened in Boston?”
Derek takes a breath and lets it out in a whoosh. “I wasn’t there. I was supposed to be there.”
You wait on him, watching him watch the road.
“Unsub holed himself up in a massive warehouse. Gideon called in all the support he could - A Team, B Team, SWAT, the whole nine. I was visiting my mom in Chicago for her birthday like I do every year.”
He stops at a red light, and you take a moment to look past him into the adjacent SUV, where Emily and Hotch’s profiles rest in a statuesque silhouette, backlit by the streetlamp.
“It was a trap from the start. Everyone pushed in on Gideon’s order and the whole thing just…” He tosses his hand up and it lands with a smack on the leather steering wheel. “It just went up. Boom. Six BAU agents in our unit, dead, just like that. Had to rebuild from scratch.”
You shiver, though the car is warm. “I’m so sorry, Derek.”
He shrugs. “Gideon took six months off, Hotch took over. Gideon came back, Hotch stayed up front.” He smiles a little. “Haley wasn’t happy, but that’s the job.”
Why does it always come back to Haley? To Hotch?
Because he’s the unit chief.
I know but…
Don’t read into it.
You decide to push, just because it’s Derek, because he seems to know, because you feel safe with him, because it might be a mistake. “Is that what you meant?”
“Hm?” His head turns just a little toward you, his brow furrowed.
“You told me on my first day ‘It wasn’t always like this.’ Is that what you meant?”
“No sane man would take on the unit chief position with a wife and baby on the way.” He shrugs and with a secret little smile says, “But nobody ever accused Hotch of being sane.”

Aaron sits in front of his computer, the end of his pen tapping on the glossy wood of his desk.
Tumblr media
Does he have feedback? He’s not sure.
Even with your limited knowledge, you’ve managed to optimize most of the administrative bullshit and political nonsense that clogs most local investigations. You bounce between acting as his shadow and JJ’s, making friends and soothing hurts when toes inevitably get stepped on.
You’ve immediately adapted to his style of criticism and correction, using Derek and Spencer as guide-rails when you’re not sure where you’re going.
There’s nothing to complain about.
But then again…
Feedback isn’t just about the negative.
If he’s honest with himself, he knows he won’t shower you in the glowing praise you deserve. Gideon never did for him or anyone that came after.
It’s not in their nature, or his.
He starts to type.
Tumblr media
Glancing out his office window, his eyes find you hunched over your desk, poring over one of Spencer’s notebooks, a pinch in your brow as deep as the Grand Canyon.
You work hard, impossibly hard. You throw everything you have at your work in the field while managing your courses and keeping up with your classmates.
That in mind, he drafts an email to Jenny.
Tumblr media
With a sigh, he sends it.
He’s still thinking of what you said on the last case, the genuine truth of it, and how many times he has done his best to preempt the gossip that plagues this office, no matter who it’s about.
This unit, as much of a family as it may be, constantly wraps itself in the business of everyone else. To know you couldn’t give less of a shit about his marriage when the rest of the team (save Gideon) probably has money on when Haley calls it quits is, admittedly, refreshing.
+++
After being in the field, classes take on a new kind of banality. You’re keeping up well enough, but watching Gideon and Derek quarrel over the details of a profile beats diving into the techniques - you guessed it - Gideon developed from cases past.
Hotch and Garcia were gracious enough to CC you on emails while you were grounded at the academy, but it wasn’t the same.
It was hard not to feel left behind, like the last kid chosen for dodgeball in PE class, watching the rest of the unit leave the office. You hung back in the bullpen as long as you could find something to do this morning, making it to class at the very last minute.
Even after lectures, your classmates want nothing more than your attention. You’re suddenly consulting on three different practicals and never have a lunch to yourself.
Most afternoons, you sneak into the bullpen just for some peace and quiet.
You hear your last name and look up, finding Erin Strauss approaching you. You stand. “Ma’am.”
“What are you working on?”
You look down at your desk, finding practical and theoretical exam notes shuffled around next to mock consults and other nonsense Hotch dropped on his way to the jet earlier in the week. “Course work, mostly. It’s nice to… get away every once in a while.”
Erin nods with a little smile. “I’d imagine you’ve been pretty popular lately.”
You shrug, a little facetious. “You could say that.”
She pays your shoulder in a surprisingly maternal gesture, before wishing you luck and leaving you to your work.
At this point, you can’t even imagine just being an FBI agent.
+++
You’ve just closed your burning, tired eyes when your phone rings.
You answer, your last name a grumble into the mic.
“It’s Hotch.”
You sit up straight in bed, immediately awake. “Sorry, sir, I -“
“I should apologize. I don’t mean to interrupt your studying or wake you but I think I could use your opinion on this profile.”
You frown in the dark, flipping your desk lamp on. “My help, sir?”
“Yeah.”  He heaves a sigh and you can almost see the fingers pressed to the bridge of his nose. “I’ve been looking at it too long.”
“Maybe Derek, can -“
“No. You. Here, listen -“
He rattles off the details of the case and you snatch your notebook and pen off the desk, jotting things down as Hotch continues through the case.
“Have you identified and contacted local individuals who fit the victimology, taken steps to protect them? He’s a preferential offender with a predictable cooling-off period, right?”
For some reason, this isn’t half as exhausting as the practical exam practice you’d been working on for the last five hours. You may or may not have written those exact questions about fifteen times, but it’s far less exhausting when directed at Hotch.
“Yeah. Two high-risk victims are in protective custody and JJ’s been in touch since this morning.”
You go through a few more basic questions, getting your feet under you, before asking the one you’re really after.
“Sir, why did you call me?”
“I needed another set of eyes.”
You huff a laugh. “No, I gathered that, but why did you call me? I’m in the middle of learning about something you’ve been doing for…” You search for a number, but your brain is fried.
“Too long,” he supplies.
“Sure. But my point stands.”
“That it does.” Something creaks in the background and you imagine he’s leaned back in his chair.
“Did I help?” You’re happy he can’t see your dubious, if not entirely doubtful, expression.
He’s happy you can’t see the little fond smile on his face. “Yes, actually. You did.”
+++
“Wheels up in thirty.”
You all stand from the table and start your routines. Emily and Spencer make a beeline for the coffee machine while JJ jets back to her office for contact sheets and files and all manner of coordinating materials.
Derek’s routine is simple enough - he already has his coffee and his go bag, so he’s answering a few emails before wheels up.
You never really know what to do during this liminal space, so you stick to classwork.
Much to your surprise, you’ve shot ahead in your classes on the shoulders of Derek and Spencer. They’ve been monumentally helpful with the history and application of profiling techniques (though much of Derek’s advice has been ‘just watch Gideon,’ you’re not sure how to watch a process that takes place entirely inside the man’s head).
You ride with Hotch to the airstrip, looking out the window most of the way. It’s only a five minute drive, but the tree-lined roads around Quantico are always lovely this time of the morning.
As always, you do your best to stay out of the way on the plane, taking up residence on Hotch’s right with your notebook and case file.
You offer some thoughts here and there, not pushing too much or saying enough to make an ass of yourself.
When Hotch calls break, the rest of the team scatters to their respective corners.
Gideon turns to you, gesturing with one finger. “Hey, ah…”
Spencer chirps your last name from across the cabin and you shoot him a grateful smile.
“Good job in the briefing, today.”
And with that, he disappears to the far side of the cabin, leaving you and Hotch alone by the table.
“Wow,” you say with a little smile. “I didn’t know he was aware of my existence.”
Hotch doesn’t say anything, but his lips twitch.
Success.
+++
“Welcome back, kiddo!” Derek offers you fist and you bump your knuckles against his on your way back to your desk. “How’d those exams go?”
You huff, playing at defeat. “Oh, you know.”
“Don’t worry about it. There’s always next time.”
Hotch, returning from a meeting with Strauss, hardly looks up from the file in his hand when he says, “Well done on your exams. SSA Radner threatened to hang your marksmanship targets on her wall.”
You hide a smile. “Thanks, Hotch.”
“Not fair!” Spencer says, tossing another Tums in his mouth. “I never passed those.”
“Then how on earth do you have that, Reid?” You point at his six-shooter, still clipped to his hip.
“Wait wait wait,” JJ says, dropping her files and crossing her arms. “You haven’t heard that story?”
Your eyes flicker from Derek, to JJ, to Spencer, and back. “...No.”
JJ settles in, regaling you with a wild tale of an L.D.S.K. -
“You remember what that stands for, right?” Derek points at you and you have a feeling this is about to become some kind of pop quiz.
“Yeah. Long Distance Serial Killer.”
“Good. Famous unsubs include…?”
You sit back in your chair with a little smirk on your face. “D.C. Snipers Muhammad and Malvo, active October 2002, seventeen victims total. Apprehended by agents from the FBI Baltimore field office -”
Derek holds up a finger. “And?”
“- and the BAU and the Maryland State Police.”
“Good.”
JJ waits for Derek to nod at her and she continues what you imagine to be a rather embellished version of a story in which Hotch and Reid save the day.
“...And then Hotch just starts kicking the shit out of Spencer -”
Hotch’s office door shuts and he sails down the stairs with one of those little secret smiles. “This one ends with Reid stealing my sidearm and shooting the unsub in the head.” He taps right between his eyebrows in the barest of pauses on his way out of the bullpen. “Dead center.”
Derek and JJ groan, both whining about how he ruined the punchline before devolving into a fit of giggles. You can almost see the smirk on his face as he pushes through the glass door and turns the corner.
You join in the mirth, ruffling Reid’s hair. He smiles widely at you.
Maybe you could just get used to this place.
+++
The second round of classes on top of added case hours (you’re traveling with the unit more often than not) nearly brings you to the brink.
On the plane back to Quantico, you realize you can’t remember the last time you actually had a full night of sleep.
The rest of the unit is out cold, curled into themselves or stretched out under blankets, save for Hotch and Gideon.
Gideon’s writing in that wretched notebook again, entirely focused on his work under the weak reading light.
Aaron sits beside you on the other side of the cabin, looking over a few files before returning home. You watch him check his watch, sigh, shrug, and pull out his phone. To your surprise, he doesn’t move to give himself space as he calls his wife.
“Hey, honey, it’s me… Yeah, we’re on the plane. Should be back within the next hour and a half... “
He sighs and tightly closes his eyes. “Haley, please… Yes, I know Jack’s already asleep… Are you implying I didn’t do my damnedest to - Then what’s your point?...”
His voice never once rises above a low murmur. It’s impressive.
“I’ll be home as soon as I can… No, I won’t pass ‘Go’ or collect two-hundred dollars or step foot into my office… Yes. Plane. Tarmac. Car. Home… Yeah… Love you too.”
He snaps his phone shut and leans back, tipping his head against the headrest.
You stay quiet, continuing your review of S.S.A. Bailey’s course on, ironically, conflict de-escalation.
Hotch takes a talking breath and you look over at him, keeping a kind of soft understanding on your face - really, shooting for anything that isn’t curiosity.
“I appreciate your…” He looks for a word. “Discretion.”
You laugh a little down your nose. “How many times do I have to tell you it’s none of my business?”
“How many times do I have to imply that a phrase like that isn’t in the vocabulary of this team, usually?” He shifts a little, and you notice his thumb, running along his forefinger like he’s searching for bone.
“Is it really that bad?”
Hotch raises his eyebrows, and you relent.
“Fine.” You drop your voice. “Do you want to know what I’ve seen?”
He shrugs. “An outside perspective might be nice.”
You keep your eyes on your book as you speak, keeping your volume low and your tone as neutral as you can.
“I’ve seen how Emily worries about fitting in - I can’t help but relate. This team is a family and it’s… hard to break through that sort-of-wall to the outside world.”
The prickly feeling of his eyes on you isn’t altogether unpleasant, but you still haven’t grown used to it.
“Derek and Spencer are worried about Gideon and,” you glance at him briefly, “so are you. Everyone seems to want to know why, but I don't think that’s always useful.”
Hotch hums once, maybe in agreement - you’re not too sure.
You are sure, though, that this was a test.
“How’d I do, Counselor?”
It’s never too early to invoke the J.D. hanging in a frame behind his desk. It was the first thing you noticed and suddenly, a lot more made sense.
You’re rewarded with a small smile. “Not bad. Though you did forget to drop in the little bit about my marriage.”
“I didn’t forget,” you assure him.
“No?”
“No. I figure if you have something to say, you seem like the kind of person who’d just say it. At least,” you shrug, “that’s my impression.”
He’s quiet for a minute before he squints and looks over your shoulder at your reading. His brown eyes track down the page before returning to yours. He’s close to you, but you’re not uncomfortable.
Hotch is...safe. Somehow.
“There’s a reason you’re the exception. Not sure what it is yet,” he says. “But there’s a reason.”
“What?”
He leans back, a cryptic little smile on his face, and says nothing else for the rest of the flight.
+++
“Hotch, are you sure it’s not a trick question?”
“The questions aren’t designed to trick you,” comes a voice from the doorway. To your surprise, it’s Gideon. “They’re designed to stretch and reveal your instincts. No right answer.”
The corners of his mouth turn down while his eyebrows rise in that kind of halfway-encouraging look he sometimes gets. “Just go with your gut.”
He disappears and you turn back to Hotch, scribbling away in a file.
“He’s right.”
Your brain feels less and less bound to your body as the days pass. “Am I nuts, or is that the most words he’s strung together since I got here, combined?”
What you now know to be a smile twitches at Hotch’s mouth. “You’re not nuts.”
You sigh and turn your attention back to your mock exam, twiddling your pencil between your fingers. “I’m sorry to keep bugging you with homework - it feels like cheating.”
He pulls his phone from his pocket. “Resourcefulness is not cheating. If it was, I’d have to go back and get my J.D. out of a Cracker Jack box.”
You muffle a laugh.
He checks his watch. “I have a check-in with the budget office in five minutes. You’re welcome to stay right where you are, but it’ll be boring and I plan to do a lot of pacing.”
You hold your hands up in surrender and settle in.
Friday afternoons in the office feel a lot like Saturdays in the office - which is to say, nothing happens at all. The rest of the team is catching up on paperwork while Gideon walks laps with his little notebook.
Not three minutes into his conversation, Hotch stands and begins to pace, as promised.
"No, we can't cut the technology budget... Because if the BAU gets called to a remote region, we need to have immediate access to satellite phones and our technical analyst… Yes… Send the budget to the Director, and I'm certain it'll come back approved without changes… The arrest and prosecution rate of this unit is -”
His desk phone rings and he gestures for you to pick it up.
“Agent Hotchner’s office,” you say with more than a little trepidation. You’re definitely not qualified to answer the unit chief’s phone.
“Goddamn it, Aaron why can’t you -” She pauses. “Wait. Sorry. Who is this?”
You introduce yourself. “I’m currently on-assignment with the unit. It’s… unconventional.”
“Hm. Why are you answering Aaron’s phone?” Her tone isn’t accusatory - it’s more curious than that. You’d imagine this doesn’t happen all that often. He’s either at his desk, or he’s not at his desk.
She calls him Aaron.
You’re not sure why that surprises you. They’re married, and he has a first name.
Taking a look across the room, you watch Hotch’s profile as he continues to defend the budget he submitted.
Aaron.
You make an attempt to see the man behind the suit, the man who goes home to his wife and son when he can.
“I’m using his office to study for my academy exams. I’ll see if I can reach Agent Hotchner for you. Just a second.”
She snorts something that could be a laugh if it wasn’t so sharp. “Thanks.”
Hotch looks over and squints at you, mouthing, Who is it?
You put her on hold and answer in a stage whisper. “It’s your wife.”
Hotch freezes for just a second - it almost looks like he’s rebooting.
He blinks three times in rapid succession before he pulls the phone away from his mouth. “Tell her I’m in a meeting. I’ll call her back.” You move to reach for the phone but he holds up a finger and you freeze. “Wait two minutes.”
You follow instructions, taking the time to answer a few more mock exam questions. You try not to think too hard about his avoidance. This doesn’t seem like a particularly pressing phone call - Hotch is in budget meetings all the time.
None of your business.
After about a minute and a half, you pick up the phone again.
Before you can say anything, she’s already back on her mini-rampage. About twenty seconds in, she pauses.
“I’m so sorry. I’m still not talking to my husband, am I?”
De-escalate. Disarm. Establish rapport.
You can do this.
You channel Derek, using a softer tone designed to distract. Maybe you’ll sneak some humor in there, if you can manage it.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Hotchner, he’s not available.”
With a defeated sigh, she asks, flatly, “Where is he?”
Humor. Play off her disappointment.
“I assume he’s in a meeting or something - he likes to think he’s very important - but I can’t find him.”
To your surprise, she laughs a little.
You check with Hotch across the room. He rolls his eyes at you but continues his bickering.
Success.
“Can you just… I don’t know… Tell him I called, or something?”
You try not to think too hard about the defeat in her tone. “I promise I’ll badger him to call you back as soon as he’s back at his desk, ma’am.”
“Wow.” She sounds impressed, and you’re not sure why. You’re not left in suspense for long. She continues -
“You’re a way better liar than JJ. Also - please don’t call me ma’am. Makes me feel old. Haley’s just fine.”
“Of course.”
“You know what…” She asks for your cell number and you give it to her, throwing a glance at Hotch for good measure. He’s still pacing.
He presses his fingers to the bridge of his nose, but can’t say anything to you before he’s forced to respond to the poor budget clerk who drew the short straw. “No we can’t start sharing hotel rooms…”
Haley interrupts your momentary space-out. “Thanks, again. If he doesn’t have a chance to call me back, can you let him know I’m going to my sister’s for the weekend? With Jack?”
“Sure.”
That’s another question I’m not going to ask.
You hang up the phone and get back to your exam, trying not to feel comforted by the lull of familiarity in the room.
+++
For some reason, you keep finding yourself alone in police precincts in the middle of nowhere with Hotch sitting across the table from you.
“Hey,” he says.
You look up.
“Haley, she…” He heaves a sigh and trails off for a minute, frowning at a spot above your head. “I don’t know why I’m asking, what I’m asking.”
You keep your eyes on him. “Shoot.”
He takes another breath. “I don’t know how to make her happy anymore.”
This is above my pay grade.
“Everything I do seems to irritate her - trying, not trying, just surviving. I don’t know.” He shakes his head at your somewhat bewildered expression. “Sorry, I -”
“No, no, Hotch. It’s fine.” You search for his eyes. “What can I do?”
He shakes his head. “Any advice?”
Any advice? Definitely above my pay grade.
You also feel for him - he wouldn’t be asking if he wasn’t desperate.
Besides that, it almost makes sense he’s asking you rather than anyone else on the team. They’ve all known him too long, have been too close to see his struggles clearly. They need to see him as an authority, separate from petty squabbles.
Separate from the things that make him human.
He needs to be a superhero for this team, and then go home and be a superhero for his family. Both parts of his life exist with a wall between them - Agent Hotchner can’t be a husband and a father in the field, and Mr. Haley Hotchner can’t be an agent at home.
It must be lonely.
Everyone else knows about and ignores that necessary separation. He trusts them as his colleagues, people he can rely on professionally, but perhaps not personally.
Well, all except Emily.
You get the feeling that he doesn’t completely trust Emily yet, but you’re not sure why. That’s another thing to figure out about the walking enigma sitting across from you.
“Well… I’ve never been married, I don’t have kids, but I think…” You search for words.
It’s none of my business, is what you want to say.
Instead, you offer, “Why don’t you just ask her?”
His brow crumples. “What?”
“Ask her. You don’t know how to, I dunno, do it right on your own, it sounds like. But you’re a team, right? Just ask her.”
You duck down to your work, getting the feeling he’d rather not be observed as he processes. There’s a part of you that wonders whether his preference for privacy masks his fear.
Another part of you already knows the answer.
+++
Derek and Emily walk back into the precinct, spotting the pair of you right where they left you.
Hotch still watches you with a soft, curious frown on his face, like there’s a puzzle there he can’t quite solve. You diligently work away, sticking flags and post-its on cold cases for the board.
“What’s with that?”
Emily looks up from her phone. “What’s with what?”
Derek nudges his chin toward the conference room. “That.”
Emily’s brow pinches a little. “They seem to be getting along well.” Her mouth twists. “I didn’t think he’d warm up so easily. He didn’t with me.”
“He gets like that. He’s getting better, though, ever since you called him out.”
She snorts. “You’re kidding. I didn’t think he actually listened - I barely meant it.”
“No, you didn’t.” Derek raises his eyebrows and searches for her eyes. “And he heard you.”
Emily shifts her attention back to you, her posture softening. “Oh.”
“C’mon,” Derek says, tapping her upper back with a good deal of affection. “Let’s regroup and see what we’ve got.”
+++
Aaron sits up in bed, the harsh light from the hotel table lamp illuminating the ugly wallpaper and the case files on the equally ugly bedspread.
His fingers hover restlessly over the keys as he drafts his email, warring with himself.
Tumblr media
Does he want you on the team? Permanently? He’s already shown too much of his hand, revealed too much of himself, grew too comfortable too quickly.
He’s not sure what it is about you that forced his guard down.
You’re not the first person he’s asked about Haley, though he must admit that Gideon was next to no help. Spencer’s offered him unsolicited statistics about marital strife on three separate occasions in the past three months.
Aaron presses his fingers to the bridge of his nose and squeezes his eyes shut.
I live in a circus.
He opens his eyes and reads over the email again.
Fuck it.
His cursor hovers over Send for just a moment before he clicks. The little whooshing sound seals his fate.
+++
You land in Arizona and Gideon’s already on edge. There’s already another crime scene by the time you get off the plane
“This one’s going to be bad, isn’t it?”
Derek sighs. “You’ve got good instincts. Stay close.”
You elect yourself Derek’s shadow at the crime scene, taking notes for him while he circles and observes the body.
Leaning close to him, you ask, “Isn’t the body positioning a sign of remorse?”
He looks over at you with a little smile. “Yeah. Good work.” He looks across the street to Hotch, speaking with the detective. “Do yourself a favor and note that to Hotch. Make sure Gideon hears you.”
+++
This time, you’re alone with Emily in the conference room, helping her pin and organize the board.
“Hey,” she says, something like hesitation in her voice.
You turn. “Yeah?”
“Did Strauss ever…” She trails off and looks over her shoulder as Hotch, Gideon, and Derek come back in from the Arizona heat. They’re on their way to the conference room.
“Did she ever what?”
Emily shakes her head and forces a smile, waving you off. “Nevermind.”
You’re not sure you get the confused look of your face before your colleagues walk through the door.
+++
“Where are they?” Hotch watches the monitor, his eyes flickering, searching for Derek and Emily.
You’re frozen, watching over his shoulder as the woman stabs the unsub, and then herself. Without knowing why, your mind wanders to that question Emily almost asked you the day before.
This isn’t good.
+++
The plane ride home is quiet, tense.
You sit next to Hotch again. There’s not much you can do, but you shoot a text to Haley.
5:42pm We’re flying back. Should be wheels down in Quantico in about four hours.
She texts back after a minute.
5:43pm Thanks.
There’s something off - you don’t like the look of that period, but you try not to read into it too much. You’re all feeling a little unsettled after that case.
Your eyes wander across the cabin.
JJ’s bottom lip is firmly planted between her teeth as she stares out the window.
Spencer’s sitting across from Gideon with a huge book in his lap, but he’s looking at Gideon more than he’s reading.
Gideon, for once, doesn’t have his journal in his hand. He, like JJ, stares out the window, his mouth pinched.
Emily’s eyes are restless, her breathing somewhat irregular. She’s picking at her nails.
“Emily.”
She looks up at you, and you tap the back of your hand with a finger. She looks down, finding her thumb and index finger close to bleeding.
“Thanks.” She looks away from you again.
If you didn’t know better, you’d think the view out the window was the most captivating sight in history.
You know better. It’s just clouds.
Your phone buzzes in your hand. Jenny.
5:58pm How’s it going?
You huff a little laugh down your nose.
5:58pm Rough day.
Hotch breaks his gaze from the window. “What’s up?”
“Just Jenny. She’s checking in.”
He shakes his head and you can hear the sarcasm in his tone. “Good day for it.”
6:01pm If you’re up to it, I’ll be in my office late if you want to swing by and talk about it. 6:02pm I also have booze.
You look up to find Hotch reading over your shoulder. He backs off. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to -”
“No, it’s fine.”
“You should go, if she’s offering.”
You snort. “Should I be job-searching already?”
“I wouldn’t worry about that,” he says with a little smile. “Jenny’s seen a lot. She’s a good resource.”
+++
The Navy yard is quiet as you drive across the campus. The NCIS building isn’t hard to find, but it’s still unfamiliar territory.
When you park and get cleared for access and up the elevator, most of the lights are off on the Major Case Response floor. There are still agents present, working under the warm light of their desk lamps.
A team of four takes up the middle of the bullpen, but they barely look up as you pass them and climb the stairs.
Cynthia isn’t at her desk - gone for the night - and Jenny’s office door is open. She also has her overhead lights turned off, giving her office a cozy, lived-in feel.
“Hey, you,” she says, looking up with a little smile. “Just got the scuttlebutt on that Arizona case. Definitely not ideal, I hear.”
You shake your head, collapsing into a chair on the other side of her desk. “Not ideal is a good way to put it.”
She stands and crosses the office, pouring two small glasses of some amber liquid you know is gonna burn like hell.
You take what she offers and hold in both of your hands, not really interested in drinking it, and follow her to the couch.
“What happened?”
You heave a breath. “Got the call - three murders already. Clearly a preferential offender. All the women were students, brunette, similar features. We already had another crime scene by the time we landed. We used the profile, got the guy.”
Jenny’s brow pinches. “Then?”
“Copycat. Even came with a note exonerating the suspect we had in custody. We had to let him go without a lead on the second suspect.”
She sighs and takes a sip of her bourbon. “Been there.”
“We were surveilling him, waiting for him to do something stupid - we knew he would. The copycat confronted him… She was suicidal. Stabbed him, then herself. We were too late.”
“Oh, my God.”
You level her with an exhausted look. “Yeah.”
“How’s your team?”
“Tired, mostly.” You offer a humorless laugh. “Maybe in a more existential way than a physical way, not that any of us have slept…”
The two of you chat into the early hours of the morning. She’s had more than one day like this, in more than one country.
“It’s days like this that make you question whether you’ve chosen the right line of work.” She looks over at a picture of herself in front of the Eiffel Tower, resting on her bookshelf. “But the good days…”
“They make it worth it, don’t they?”
The corner of her mouth tips up in a smile. “Yeah. They do.”
+++
You find a text from Haley when you get back into the car, not realizing you left it in the center console cup holder.
10:38pm Thanks for getting him home safe. Get some sleep.
+++
When you come in the next morning almost embarrassingly late, Gideon’s office is still dark.
You’re not even really sure you should be here in the first place, what with the major fuckup hanging over everyone’s heads. The last thing you want to do is go home to your room, back to those four tiny walls and textbooks, even after everything. The bullpen, this team, has become your safety net.
They should all be here, but there’s only one absence striking you as particularly odd. “Where’s Gideon?”
Spencer shrugs, spinning half-circles in his desk chair. He looks despondent, staring at the carpet. You don’t see Emily or Derek, but you assume they’re somewhere.
Weird.
You set your things down and head up the stairs, knocking twice on Hotch’s door.
“Yeah?” He looks up and sees you, relaxing a little.
You take a little breath. “Should I be here today?”
“Do you want to be here today?” There’s something behind his voice you can’t quite place. It almost sounds like insecurity, like he’s worried he’s scared you off.
Far from it.
“I do, sir. I want to be here.” You think of Jenny, and hope he can hear more than you can say. “It’s worth it.”
You think maybe you’re figuring him out a little more. He smiles more often than you’d think, but you have to know what it looks like. This look - the softening of his eyes and the corners of his mouth, the slight crease at the corners of his eye, the threat of a dimple - is just as big a smile for him as Morgan’s human-sunshine smile.
“Then stick around. I’ll have you work on some mock consults with Reid and Prentiss - you’ll be doing a lot of those in the next few months until you’re ready to take them on by yourself.”
“I’ll go pick them up from JJ. They’re in her office, right?”
He nods and you turn to leave, but you’re stopped by the sound of your name before you can get through the door. “Yeah?”
“You’ve performed remarkably well, no matter what happens after this.”
The side of your mouth twists. “Thank you, sir.”

The Cabin - Tom Hiddleston x Curvy Reader (Part 3/3)
Part 1
Part 2
You threw some shorts and your favorite baggy hoodie on and headed downstairs to see what everyone’s plans were for the day. When you made it downstairs you saw that most of Chris’ family was dressed to go to the mountain and ski or snowboard.
“You guys headed up to the resort?” you asked, taking the plate of food that Lisa handed you and sitting next to one of Chris’ sisters.
“Everyone but ma” Scott answered, looking half asleep on the other side of the table.
“Let Chris know that I had all of the tires checked on my SUV, even the spare” you said to Scott.
Scott nodded towards the stairs where Chris was almost to the bottom. “Y/n, Can I borrow your truck or do you need it today?” he asked.
“I was just telling Scott the tires and the spare are all good to go so you shouldn’t have to worry about them” you answered, taking a sip of your coffee.
“Perfect” he said, stopping to kiss you on the cheek before going to the kitchen to grab food. “Between our two trucks I think we can fit everyone.”
When everyone was packing up for their day trip up the mountain, you made sure to throw some extra jackets, blankets, and snacks in the back of your truck and made sure Chris knew they were there.
“Are you not going?” you asked Tom when he started helping Lisa gather all of the dirty dishes from breakfast.
“I think I’d rather hang back with you if you’d like the company” he said, stacking a few more plates.
“I think Lisa and I can put you to good use” you teased, grabbing the stack of plates from him and walking them to the kitchen. “Lisa, what are your plans for the day?”
“I don’t need to start dinner until 2 or so” she answered, cleaning up the kitchen from the breakfast mess. “Is the TV by the hot tub out back set up?”
“It is!” you answered. “The remote is waterproof and it’s already signed into all of the apps on it so you can watch pretty much anything.”
“Then I think I’m going to enjoy my quiet day relaxing” she laughed. “I watch the kids most days back home so this’ll be a little vacation within a vacation.”
“Oh my god, I almost forgot!” you said, turning to reach into the cabinet above your refrigerator. “I got you this last time I drove down through the vineyards.”
You handed her a bottle of the wine she fell in love with last time the family was at your cabin. “You didn’t!” She sat the bottle down on the counter and pulled you into a hug.
“You may as well have a glass while you’re relaxing out back” you said, watching Tom put the rest of the dishes from the table into the sink.
“Maybe just one” she laughed, going back to putting the leftover food away.
“What wine is it?” Tom asked.
Lisa started talking about the wine and how it reminded her of her favorite wine that they no longer made, insisting that she pour the two of you a glass when she poured hers.
“Ooo, that is very nice” Tom said, taking a sip.
When Lisa tried to help with the dishes you told her to go and relax. Tom helped you finish up cleaning the kitchen.
“What’s next?” Tom asked.
“Do you want to bake our cookies?” you asked in response.
Tom smiled, taking another sip of his wine. “That sounds wonderful.”
You turned the oven on and pulled all of the ingredients you bought out of the cabinet, telling Tom where he could grab the mixing bowls and measuring cups/spoons. The two of you took your time, laughing and talking as you mixed the ingredients all together.
“These are going to be so good” you said, commenting on the fact that Tom had picked out regular chocolate chips and white chocolate chips and mixed them together in the cookie dough.
“You can never have too much chocolate” he said, sneaking a bit of the uncooked cookie dough into his mouth.
“So impatient” you teased, shooing his hand away when he went to grab more.
When you filled a baking sheet with balls of cookie dough, Tom put it in the oven and set the timer. You hopped up to sit on your counter while you waited, taking another sip of your wine.
“How was your workout with Chris this morning” you asked.
Tom laughed. “Let’s just say I was grateful to get rid of some tension after doing some…*clears throat*…light reading last night.”
You looked confused for about two second before you realized what he was talking about. You threw your head back laughing, “You started reading my book.”
“Oh, you underestimate your own talent, darling” Tom replied, walking up to you. “I read the whole book.”
Your cheeks instantly went warm. “Well, what did you think?” The look on Tom’s face, the way he licked his lips…you almost wished you hadn’t started baking so that you could just drag him up to your bedroom right now.
Tom’s hands settled on your knees, slowly pulling them apart so that he could stand between them. “I think…” his lips gently pressed against yours as his hands slid up to rest against your hips. “…that your mind is just as sexy as the rest of you.” He deepened the kiss, his fingers digging into the soft flesh of your hips.
You put your arms around his neck, his body leaning into yours. “Is that so?”
Tom wrapped his arms around your middle, pulling you tight against his body. “Absolutely, darling.” Right when Tom reconnected your lips, the timer to the oven went off.
Tom laughed, resting his forehead against yours.
“We keep getting interrupted” you laughed.
Right as you finished talking, Lisa walked back inside from the back porch with a towel wrapped around her.
“You’re not wrong” Tom laughed.
Lisa looked over at the two of you and smiled. “Aww, don’t let me stop you two. You might want to check whatever you’ve got in the oven, though.” The timer was continuing to beep.
Tom quickly kissed you again before stepping back and grabbing the oven mitts. “I’ll switch these out.”
While Tom was putting the last sheet of cookies in the oven, you were talking to Lisa.
“I think we should prepare everything we can for dinner early” you suggested.
“What for?” Lisa asked, topping off all three of the wine glasses.
“Well, if we get it done now, we’ll just have to throw it in the oven later” you answered. “Then we can order some Chinese take-out for lunch, open another bottle of wine, and play some games.”
Lisa seemed to be considering it.
“Sounds like the perfect way to spend probably your only quiet afternoon on this trip” Tom laughed, resetting the oven timer for the last batch of cookies.
“Okay, you’ve convinced me” Lisa said, opening the refrigerator to start prepping dinner.
You and Tom quickly cleaned up the mess from the cookies, making room for Lisa. “Mmm, these are delicious” Tom said, taking a bite of one of the cookies. He held the cookie towards you so you could take a bite.
“They’re so good when they’re still warm” you said, licking a bit of chocolate off of your lip.
Tom smiled, pulling you into a quick kiss. “I could have gotten that for you, you know.”
You laughed, stealing the rest of his cookie. “Okay, what do you guys want from the Chinese restaurant?”
Over the next few hours, the three of you went through another bottle of wine, most of the Chinese food, and 3 or 4 different card and board games. When Chris and the rest of the family got back, the three of you were a little drunk, hanging out in the kitchen while dinner finished cooking, telling stories and spending most of the time laughing.
“What’s going on here?” Chris asked, hugging his mom and asking if she was drunk.
“Just a little” Lisa laughed, moving to pull dinner out of the oven.
“It looks like you guys had a good time” he said, leaning against the counter that you were currently sitting on. Tom had started pulling out clean dishes for dinner.
“We had a great time” you answered. “How was the mountain?”
“So good” Chris said, pulling out his phone and showing you pictures and videos of the kids learning how to snowboard.
“Aww, I’m glad” you said, telling him to send you a few of them so that you could have them printed and added to the photos in the den.
“The table is set” Tom said, walking back into the kitchen.
“Thank you” you replied, opening your arms so that he would come stand between your knees. “Dinner should be ready in a few minutes”
Tom blushed as he slid his arms around you, knowing Chris was going to say something “I think everything is good to go, then.”
Chris smirked over at you. “Let me reiterate my statement from earlier. It looks like you guys had a great time.”
“You could say that” Tom said, pressing a quick, sweet kiss to your lips before grabbing your hand and pulling you to the dining room table.
That night you, Chris, Tom, and Scott were the last ones up. All of the activity on the mountain made most call it an early night.
“I’m going to go sit up in the hot tub if anyone wants to join me” you said, standing up from your position tucked into Tom’s side.
When you were all the way up the stairs, Scott and Chris turned to Tom.
“How’s it goin’ buddy?” Scott asked, smirking.
Tom laughed, looking up the stairs where you’d disappeared to. “Well, if I had to put it into words I’d say ‘very well’.”
“Is this just you guys having fun or is this going to continue after break?” Chris asked. He knew you were an adult, but he still felt very protective of you.
“I haven’t actually had the chance to talk to her about it” Tom replied.
“What do you want it to be?” Scott asked.
“If I’m being honest, I hope this is going somewhere permanent” Tom confessed. “She’s…” He started his sentence and cleared his throat, knowing that he was about to gush about his feelings. “Well, you two know her. You know she’s incredible.”
“Nah, what were you going to say” Chris reached to slap Tom’s shoulder, laughing.
“I know that this is going to sound horribly cliché” Tom continued, “but she’s perfect. She’s kind, creative, intelligent, beautiful, confident, funny…”
Scott let out a quiet “aww”
“And if you don’t mind, I’d like a few minute head start joining her upstairs” Tom said, standing and walking towards the stairs.
“No sex in the hot tub!” Chris jokingly yelled.
Tom laughed. “I’d need more than a few minutes for that.” He could hear the brothers laughing as he jogged up the stairs, snagging his swim shorts before walking into your room.
“Y/n?” Tom called into your room.
“Just getting changed” you said, your arms covering your bare chest as you peeked out your closet door. You’d just slipped your bikini bottoms on, but you hadn’t sorted out the straps to your top. “Are you joining me?”
“I think we all are” Tom smiled, closing your bedroom door. “I asked for a head start so I could speak to you for a moment.”
“Can we talk while I sort out my top?” you asked, walking back into your closet.
“Of course,” Tom replied, pulling his own shirt off. “I wanted to talk to you about…well, us.”
“A topic I’m very interested in” you answered. “Go on.”
“That’s good to hear” Tom laughed, stripping out of his jeans and boxers. “I don’t know what you want, but I wanted to make sure that my feelings were clear.” Tom pulled the swim trunks on.
“Well, I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours” you said, walking out of your closet when your top was in place.
Tom smiled, opening his arms and pulling you against him. “I really like you” he said, pressing a gentle kiss against your lips. “I was hoping that this is something you will want to continue after I’ve gone back to LA.”
Tom’s eyes were closed, his forehead rested against yours. “That’s a relief” you said, connecting your lips in a much more passionate kiss. “I was going to ask you how you felt about me driving back down to LA with you two.”
“Really?” Tom’s eyes brightened.
“Yes, really” you laughed.
“That would make me very happy” Tom replied.
“Then it’s a plan” you said, moving to open your bedroom door and pulling Tom out onto the balcony.
When the brothers joined you two a few minutes later, they were dramatically walking around with their eyes closed, trying to feel their way to the balcony door. “Please tell me no one’s naked” Chris teased.
“You’re gonna have to see for yourself” you laughed. You were leaning back against Tom’s chest with his arms wrapped around your middle.
Scott opened one eye, calling an “all clear” when he spotted the two of you cuddled up in the hot tub.
The four of you hung out in the hot tub for probably another hour before the brothers called it a night.
When you and Tom climbed out of the hot tub, you wrapped a towel around yourself and walked to the bathroom that was connected to your bedroom. You turned on the shower and walked back to the doorway. “I’m going to shower tonight if you’d like to join me.”
Without waiting for a response, you dropped your towel on the counter and stripped out of your bikini. You stepped into the steaming shower, feeling the hot water run from your hair down your body. With your eyes closed, you lathered up your hair with shampoo and started rinsing it out. You could feel a short cool breeze as Tom opened the curtain to step into the shower with you. Before you opened your eyes, you felt Tom’s hands on your hips.
“You are absolutely stunning” Tom said, one of his hands moving to rest against the side of your face as he pulled your lips against his.
“I could say the same thing about you” you replied as your eyes took in his full naked form. Your hands slid down tom’s back and rested against his ass.
“Can I stay with you tonight?” Tom asked, his hands moving to your breasts and his lips moving to your neck.
“Just move your stuff to my room” you answered, your hands pulling Tom’s body firmly against yours.
“Now that I know I’ve got more time with you tonight” Tom laughed, grabbing your body soap and lathering his hands. “Let’s get clean and then we can move this to your bed.”
“Gladly” you smiled, lathering your hands and running them over Tom’s body.
The two of you didn’t actually fall asleep until after Tom’s gym alarm went off. Tom had sent Chris a text saying that he was going to skip the gym this morning, but that he’d continue going with Chris starting tomorrow.
When Chris went to give Tom shit for ditching the gym, he realized why he was staying home. Tom’s room was empty.
“I’m sure you got enough of a workout in last night anyways” Chris replied to Tom’s text with a few obscene emojis.
Tom laughed, tightening his arms around you after he set his phone down on the bedside table. “Chris will probably have a few questions for us when we wake up.”
“I don’t doubt it” you replied, snuggling into Tom’s side.
“Get some rest, darling” Tom said, pressing a kiss to the top of your head.
A few weeks later while on a lunch break from filming, Chris looked over at Tom and you. “Did Y/n ever tell you what her other pen name is for?”
Tom nearly choked on his food, and you couldn’t help but laugh and reply, “You’re never going to drop that, are you?”
Chris’ eyes narrowed as he started at Tom. “God damnit, she told you.”
Tom started laughing. “I simply don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Did you tell him?” Chris looked at you.
“He’s my boyfriend, Chris. Of course he knows.”
“I’ve known you for years! You’re my best friend! You barely just met him!” You couldn’t help but laugh at Chris’ dramatics.
“Should I tell him?” you turned to Tom.
“I don’t know how he would handle it” Tom teased.
“I can handle it!” Chris interrupted.
“If I tell you, you can’t tell anyone else. Not even Scott.” You reached your hand across the table with your pinky sticking out.
“Did you make him pinky promise?” Chris snarked, hooking his pinky with yours.
“She did, actually” Tom laughed.
“Fine, I swear on my life I won’t tell anyone” Chris said, leaning forward so you could tell him.
You pulled out your phone and sent him a link to your website that lists all of your adult books. “Just so you know, you were sort of the inspiration for one of my characters.” You stood from the table and grabbed Tom’s hand as Chris opened the text and clicked the link. You were quietly laughing at Chris’ wide eyes as he realized what he was looking at.
“Wait, what?!” Chris looked up at the two of you. “You wrote all of these?”
“She’s did.” Tom squeezed your hand. “The ones I’ve read so far are actually incredible.”
“Thanks, babe” you pressed a quick kiss to his cheek, the two of you walking towards his trailer.
“How do I know which one you based on me?” Chris called out.
“You’ll have to read them to find out” you answered, feeling Tom wrap his arm around your shoulders.

The Devil's Mercenary Technoblade X Reader pt. 4
Hey y'all, got an idea from snake anon for this part. This'll be a kinda short chapter.
Date: September 19, 2021.
Series Masterlist
Pt. 5
The shower wasn't as awkward as I thought it'd be. We kept our eyes away from each other, but that didn't mean I didn't catch glances. His pupils were slightly blown every time I looked over to him, they sometimes... wandered...
I can't say I'm completely innocent either, can you blame me though? The man is huge, it's almost impossible not to notice. I Can't help but wonder how that would feel sliding between my legs.
I rushed to change into my clothes, cowering away from the thoughts I had. We walked back out into the main area, Tech was still drying his hair, his hands were traveling through his hair. They were so big, his fingers were long and slender, just perfect for pleasuring me with.
I really need to get it together, he's just a man, just a hot, half piglin man. Oh, dear gods.
"The bedroom's this way," he mumbled as he started walking towards another door, it creaked just like the one we walked in through.
"How old is this place?" I question as I took in the room we stood in. The floor was rickety old birch wood, contrasting the dark oak in the main house. The chairs were worn out, and the walls were peeling in some places. There were two beds just like he promised, one of them was covered in a white sheet, and the other was actually pretty nice, it looked relatively new like it had just been made.
"About as old as me," he answered as he went to grab the white tarp.
"So a couple millenniums?"
"Funny."
I smirked and rolled my eyes, "Which one am I sleeping on?" He pointed towards the uncovered bed and I smiled. Sounded good to me. I plopped down just as he pulled the covering off.
Dust went flying and he started coughing. I slightly glared at him as I went to lay down, "Rather homey this place is."
"Fuck off."
"Oh wow, the Blood God using mature language, what would Philza say?"
"Do you know how to shut up?"
"Do you know who you're talking to?"
He huffed out a single laugh, "You're something."
"I am indeed," I laughed as I plopped back on the bed. Techno sat, carefully moving his body into a laying position. I leaned over to turn off the lamp between us when I heard something snap, followed by a loud thud.
I looked over to see Tech laying on the floor grumbling to himself. his cheeks were pink, and his hair was frazzled and curling in every direction. A loud laugh bubbled from my throat as I looked at him laying on the floor. My eyes teared up as I doubled over in the bed.
His coughing brought me out of my fit, I looked at him, trying to regain my composure, only to lose it again as I saw the glare he was shooting at me.
"Jesus man, can't even lay in a bed right." He glowered at me and mumbled something I couldn't understand. I looked at the wooden frame of the bed, apparently, I was right about the furniture, shit was so old it couldn't take it anymore. I felt slightly bad as he began to make his bed on the floor, trying to salvage the mattress.
I debated with myself for a second, before gathering my humanity, "Do you wanna come up here with me? The floor might just break too," the seriousness and the humor mixed together well, especially in this situation.
He looked between the mattress and the bed, I shuffled over, trying to sway his decision. He huffed before clambering to lay in the bed with me. I made sure to put as much distance between the two of us as I could.
"Night," I mumbled as I rolled over.
"G'night," he responded gruffly, as he turned out the light.
~~~~
The walls of a Nation stood above the war raging on, holding strong against the sieges of arrows that flew towards the people inside. Wilbur held onto Tommy and me tight. His arms never swaying as the tears clouded his vision.
Despite the circumstances I was in, I had never felt so safe, and I knew, L'manburg was my home.
Everything began to fade, the shouts and cries of yelling became more and more distant. I was walking, searching for something no doubt. What was I searching for?
"Well hello there, beautiful," my body turned on its own, my hand immediately falling to my belt. The sword unsheathed and I glared at the man standing before me.
"What do you want?" Such familiar words...
I could almost see the smile that grew on his lips, "I was looking for you."
"Me?"
"Mhm, you. I wanted to speak to you."
"Spit it out man, I don't have time to play your game."
"Always so firey, I see why Wilbur adores you. I have an... idea... to bring to your attention."
"An idea?"
"Consider it nothing but a business transaction, I want you... to kill for me."
My eyes widened, then closed, and bellowing laughter fell from my lips, "You-you're nuts," I wheeze. He didn't seem to be laughing though... I straightened up, my features losing all sign of laughter, "Really Dream, why would I work for you?"
He smiled, I know he did, I don't have a way to prove it, but he did, "Because I can give you what you crave most," his voice was smooth, silky, as he stalked towards me. His arm made its way around my waist, and the other arm made it way to my face, hand gently cupping my cheek, "Attention."
~~~~
It was too cold, he was only half awake, and it was still the early hours of the morning. He didn't care who he had just cuddled up against, he couldn't care less who his arms had just wrapped around, and he didn't know the person he pulled onto his chest was you. Maybe if he had known, he would have cared more, but right now, he was content being warm.
~~~~
Well, that's part four done. I'm pretty happy with it. I still haven't thought out the full extent of the reader and Dream's relationship, but I will say he's quite protective over them. Thoughts for pt. 5? Suggestions? Speak now or forever hold your peace ;)
Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter Three Chapter Four Chapter Five Chapter Six Chapter Seven Chapter Eight
It hurt. You had not expected it to hurt. After being numb for so long you thought you were beyond feeling, now.
For a brief moment it had succeeded in distracting you. Your grief, your exhaustion, the numbness that had filled your every moment… it all dissipated between one heartbeat and the next as the blood cascaded down your knuckles. The fractured mirror distorted your reflection. A large piece of glass glared back up at you from the basin of the sink. Your blood steadily dripped onto it from where it streamed down your bloodied hands.
The glass had ribboned your hands where you’d struck the mirror, glass jutting painfully from your skin. But all the same, you felt relieved. You could not stand the sight of your own face anymore. Not when Rose wasn’t there behind you, with his beautiful smile and loving eyes.
Picking up the piece of glass from the sink your body sunk down to the ground. You pressed your back weakly against the wall. It would be so easy. So quick. One quick movement and you’d be dead in a matter of minutes..
You absently noted the blood flowing down your arms at an alarming rate. You felt dizzy, cold. You had obviously injured yourself worse than anticipated. Maybe the decision was made for you and now you’d bleed out on your own...
You were still holding the glass in your red hand when you heard the front door open. Dimly, you registered someone calling your name.
You shifted, deciding to lie against the floor instead. The tile cools your hot cheeks and dried some of your tears. The blood from your hands and arms filled the crevices of the tile, inching towards your face.
You’d locked the refresher door. A knock. Someone was calling your name again.
In your feeble state you thought that the voice belonged to Rose. That Rose had come for you. A weak smile pulled the corner of your lips. He’d just come home from his mission. Rose was looking for you. The world grew quiet and dark around you. Cold. But Rose was calling for you. You could feel his hands on you. They were warm. You gasped upon feeling his hot breath against your lips but felt too weak to open your eyes to see him.
“Wake up.” His voice called, barely a whisper.
You let out a soft sound, trying to reach out to him. To reach Rose.
“Wake up.” Muffled, like he was calling to you from far away.
I’m trying, you wanted to tell him. I’m trying, I’m coming, I love you, I’m coming.
The voice grew louder and you suddenly remembered Rose was dead, cold and buried somewhere far, far away. Somewhere you couldn’t reach him. You gripped the glass tighter and the jagged edges dug even deeper into your flesh.
“WAKE UP!!”
Your eyes flew open. The bright light of the bathroom was partially obscured by the face looming overhead. Groaning, you closed your eyes again. Too bright. Too much.
“No, no – dammit all! Keep your eyes open! You’re okay. You’re okay! You’re going to be fine.” Fives was frantic, his voice higher than you had ever heard it before. Wild panic flared in his expression. One arm wrapped around your shoulders as he half-held you in his lap, the other hand pressing roughly against your wrist.
“You’re going to push the glass in deeper!” Echo snarled somewhere to your left. You caught a glimpse of him tearing through his pack, a med-kit strewn open on the floor before him.
“She’s karking bleeding, Echo! Give me a better solution if you have one!”
“Both of you stop arguing.” Kix’s voice echoed from a comm-link on the floor near Fives’ thighs. “Focus or she’s going to bleed out. Where’s the worst of it coming from?”
“Her palms – n-no, her wrist. Her left wrist.. it’s bad.” Fives said, looking you over quickly. “Kriff, she’s ripped to hell, Kix.”
“Go away.” You mumbled, your eyes fluttering shut once more.
“Respectfully, shut up.” Echo replied, focused as he grabbed one of your arms, finding the wounds without glass in them and wrapping them in bacta patches. Your skin burned as the bacta took effect almost immediately.
“Give me the tweezers.” Fives snapped, pulling your other arm up towards him.
“No, your hands are shaking. Focus on keeping her conscious, I’ll handle the glass.” Echo shook his head and you heard him take a steadying breath. “What were you thinking, mesh’la?”
You saw blood – your blood – on Echo’s gloves and Fives’ armor plates. You wondered if Rose had bled when he died too, or if his heart stopped beating instantly.
“You aren’t kriffing dying.” Fives hissed. You hadn’t realized you’d spoken aloud. “Echo? How’s it coming?” He demanded.
“Almost got it.” Echo murmured, his tweezers focused on your hands as he plucked the glass quickly from your skin.
“I’m almost there.” Kix’s voice echoed across the comm-link again. “The Captain is with me.”
“Got it!” Echo was triumphant, flinging the last bit of glass aside and ripping a bandage open with his teeth. He passed a second one to Fives as he wrapped the biggest of your injuries. “This’ll hold until Kix can get a look at her.”
Fives sagged with relief, muttering a prayer to whatever gods were listening before turning his head to the comm-link. “Should we move her?”
“No, keep her still. I’m coming up now.”
You felt Fives’ gloved hand brush against your cheek, clearing away tears you hadn’t realized you’d been crying.
“It’s alright, we’ve got you.” He murmured. “You’re going to be okay.”
~
You lost count of how many hours you’d stayed curled up on the couch, sobbing against your knees.
When Fives had broken the news about Echo you wanted to scream. You wanted to cry. You wanted to break things, hurt people and wail to the gods; why, why, why would they let this happen again!
But you did none of those things. Instead you took a steadying breath, trying to keep yourself together.
“What can I do?” You whispered. “Fives, what do you need?”
“I don’t… I don’t know.” Fives seemed oddly calm himself. “I think – think I might be in shock, still.”
“Should I call Rex?” The tears were coming but you kept your voice in check. “Do you want me to meet you at the base? I can wait for you right outside the watch posts -.”
“No. I think I need to be around vode for a little bit.” His voice cracked slightly on the Mando’a word and your heart clenched.
“Okay. I’m here, whatever you need.”
“Are you okay on your own?”
Your heart twisted all over again. Fives had just lost his twin and he was still worrying over you.
“I’m okay, don’t worry about me. Fives, I’m so sorry.”
“I – I couldn’t keep him safe.” Fives whispered. “Kriff, I’m the last one. I’m the only one left.”
“What do you mean?”
“I can’t be the only one left.” He mumbled. “I can’t.”
“Fives? Talk to me.”
He hadn’t responded. Instead letting the call end with the soft click of his communicator. Then you’d finally allowed the tears to flow.
It was the soft knock on your door that finally pulled you from your stupor. With that, you rose to your feet sluggishly, wiping hot tears as the door slid open.
Rex’s expression softened the second he took in your face. “C’mere.” He murmured, stepping into the apartment and pulling you gently into his arms. His armor was uncomfortable, but you tucked your head against his chest nonetheless, finding comfort in his actions.
“How’s he doing?” Rex asked softly, pulling away and wiping at your tears with his gloved hand. “I’m sorry it took so long for me to get over here. I… I came as soon as I could -.”
“Who?” You sniffed, your breathing still a little shaky.
“Fives.” Rex repeated. “Is he in your room?”
“He isn’t – he isn’t here.” You mumbled, taking a slow breath. “He said he wanted to stay with the boys tonight..”
Rex screwed up his face in confusion for a moment. “Okay. Alright, cyar’ika, hang tight.” He guided you back to the couch, settling you against the cushions before heading into your kitchen, talking softly into his comm-link as he went.
“Anybody have eyes on Fives?”
You were too far from him to hear the responses of his men. When Rex returned to you a few moments later with a cup of water, you accepted it gratefully and listened in.
“Negative sir, thought he was dismissed?” Came Hardcase’s response.
“He was. I sent him to Y/Ns’ but he’s not here.” Rex replied, his voice measured.
“He told me he was staying on base.” You repeated.
“I know, little one.” Rex sat a little closer, putting a comforting arm around you. “When we landed, I told him to come straight here and wait for me. I even had Kix file a medical report giving him additional leave.” Rex redirected his attention to his comm. “Kix, have you seen him?”
“Not since you landed, sir. He came by asking for Downers. Said he just wanted to sleep.”
Rex’s expression darkened. “Did you give him any?”
“Negative. Just told him about the medical leave and sent him on his way.”
There was something about the way Rex’s expression tightened, the way in which his jaw was set a little too tense, that made your gut knot.
“Rex?” You asked him quietly.
“Nobody’s seen him anywhere on base?” Rex repeated.
“I can ask around, sir. But I don’t think he’s here.” Jesse said.
“Maybe he went to 79’s? Or the Lounge?” You suggested.
Rex nodded absently though you could tell he was still concerned. Regardless, he focused back on you. “What do you need?” He asked softly. “Have you eaten?”
“I…” You shook your head, unable to stop your next words. “..I need Echo back.”
You knew it didn’t help anyone to say it but you couldn’t stop yourself. Rex squeezed your shoulder gently though his eyes avoided your own.
“I know, cyar’ika. I know.”
“What – what happened?”
Rex sighed, scrubbing a hand down his face. “They blew up our ship.” He said finally. “Echo was.. He was too close.”
You felt the tears start up fresh and you buried your face in your hands. Rex’s hand moved to your back and began a soothing rhythm.
At least it had been quick. Quick and painless, just like Rose -.
Each thought that raced through your brain tumbled over the next, remembering suddenly what you’d been doing before Fives called you.
“Rex,” You lifted your head, swiping at the tears again. “Rex, about – about what happened with -.”
“Hold on.” He cut you off, his communicator beeping at him again as he flicked it on. A little holo-projection appeared before the two of you, a single red blip beeping on the map.
“What is that?” You asked.
“Fives’ location. Er, his armor at least. There are trackers embedded in clone armor, so we can find our people if anyone goes MIA.” Rex answered, distracted, zooming in on the blip. “Looks like he’s right outside the Lounge.”
You frowned and looked a little closer. You recognized the topography, the layouts of the building, the way the blip flickered just slightly off the Lounge itself -.
“Rex.” You murmured. “He isn’t outside the Lounge, he’s above it.” You looked up at him, eyes alit with worry. “He’s on the roof. On the landing platform. I’m sure of it.”
You thought back to his call. The way his voice shook, how unsteady and yet oddly calm his demeanor was. The cadence of his breathing. The fear, the grief, the loss.
“We… We talked before.” You said quietly. “He said he couldn’t be the only one left.”
You had heard stories from your boys. They’d told you about Domino Squad. About how their brotherhood was the only thing that had kept them going through all the loss.
And now Fives was on the roof.
You and Rex both reached the same conclusion. He leapt to his feet, opening your front door and flying down the hall, you hot on his heels. There was no time for hesitance.
“Do you have a speeder?!” Rex shouted over his shoulder. He was darting down the stairs, too impatient to wait for a turbolift.
“Yes!” You shouted back, heart pounding in your chest. You held your communicator in one hand, taking the stairs two at a time as you frantically tried calling Fives. Rex was doing the same thing a few feet in front of you.
His feet hit the ground first, peeling across the hangar bay floor towards the docks. “Which one?!”
“Here!” You shouted back, grabbing your speeder. He swung one leg over and mounted it quickly. You hopped on behind him and held tight to his waist with one arm while your other one kept trying to call Fives. “Fives, pick up!! Answer me!”
A rare Coruscanti thunderstorm peeled across the horizon, rain smacking your face like bullets, despite the bit of cover Rex’s back gave you.
“Kix, how close are you to the Lounge?” Rex shouted into his own communicator, whizzing through traffic as fast as your speeder would go.
“Er, I’m still on base sir, is everything -.”
“Get to the lounge, now!” Rex ordered. “As fast as you can.”
“Yes sir.” Kix knew better than to question the Captain.
Rex gunned it, forcing you to hold on tighter.
You made it to the lounge in record time. Rex forced the speeder into a slide as he came to a stop right by the front doors. He wasted no time, bolting into the club and vaulting over the bar, booking it for the back stairs. You followed a few breaths behind, taking the stairs two at a time and throwing the doors to the roof open.
The rain battered the rooftop, the neon from surrounding buildings reflecting back onto the rain, but you barely noticed the rain. Your eyes were trained on Rex, his hands raised to the level of his shoulders, extended slightly in front of him in surrender. Ahead of him, gripping the railing of the loading dock with one hand and a blaster pistol in the other, was Fives.
Even from a distance, you could see the wild look in Fives’ eyes. It was easy to see the state of manic desperation he was experiencing. The rain and wind whipped around him, the old dock groaning and jerking in the storm.
“Get down from there!” You shouted, starting to move towards him. It was then that you realized the blaster pistol in his hand was trained on Rex. Then as you took a step forward, it moved to you instead.
“DON’T KARKING MOVE!” Fives shouted. Lightning cracked behind him, briefly illuminating all three of you.
Rex shifted immediately, pushing you behind his back with one hand and keeping the other extended. “Easy, soldier.” He called, blinking away the rain on his lashes.  “Come down off that thing. Let’s talk, alright?”
“I’m not going to talk to you about a kriffin’ thing!” Fives shouted back, switching the blaster back to Rex. Whether it was rain or tears on his face, you couldn’t be sure. You thought it might have been both. “You made me leave him!”
“He was gone, Fives!” Rex said, shaking his head. “You know that.”
“No! Y-you left him to die!” Fives’ voice broke, the blaster shaking in his grip. His hair clung to his forehead as the rain continued its barrage against him.
Fives gripped the blaster tighter and straightened up slightly to square his shoulders. “I’m done taking orders.” He snarled. “I’m not going to be a pawn anymore! Not to you, not to anyone else.”
“Fives,” Rex warned and took another step forward. Fives pulled the blaster towards himself, driving it up under his chin instead.
“I can’t do this, sir.” He whimpered, pressing the barrel against his jaw. “I can’t.” His voice cracked as he spoke.
“Fives, think about what you’re doing!” Rex shouted, stepping forward again. “Stop!”
“I wish it had been you.” Fives gritted out, squeezing his eyes shut.
“Alright!” Rex threw his hands in the air again. “Alright, be angry at me! Hate me all you want, I can handle that! But don’t punish her like this.”
Fives looked at you for just a moment. His dark eyes swirled with a pained melancholy that broke your heart. HIs posture seemed to dip inwards. Rex continued.
“You get to be angry at me. Gods know I’d be angry too.” Rex called, inching closer to the platform. “But she’s right here, Fives. She’s watching you. Don’t make her watch this. This is between you and me, yeah? Don’t bring her into this.”
Fives hesitated.
You inched around Rex, keeping your hands outstretched in front of you like Rex had been doing, reaching for Fives. “It’s okay.” You said, your own tears streaking your cheeks as you edged onto the platform with him. “It’s okay. Let’s just go home, okay? We can go home, Fives. We can just go home.”
You realized he was shaking, his breathing ragged as tears and rain soaked his face. He crumbled in on himself, the blaster lowering just slightly as you cupped his cheeks in your hands.
“Come on. Put it down. Let’s go home.”
Fives leaned into your touch and gripped the gun tighter.
“It’s not home anymore.”
He brought the blaster back under his chin and closed his eyes.
“Fives, don’t!!”
Your scream was lost in the sound of the thunder, wind whipping the platform once again and knocking you and Fives off-balance. His blaster went off, the stray bolt sailing up into the dark sky instead of into his head as the platform creaked dangerously. The sudden jolt forced Fives to his knees and the blaster clattered out of his hand. The metal dipped, the platform dropping at a sharp angle, threatening to fall entirely. You landed in a roll, tumbling down the slippery metal, your hands scrambling for purchase as the platform went out from under you. You heard Rex shout your name and a beat later a hand was on your bicep, hauling you off the ground and shoving you back towards the stable ground of the roof.
You connected with the hard plastoid of Rex’s armor, Fives scrambling off the platform right behind you as the entire thing collapsed moments after you’d landed on the roof. You listened to the groan of metal as it broke away from the rooftop, descending from the sky until it clattered against the ground below. The sound reverberated across the buildings around you.
For a while the three of you were frozen in place, squinting through the rain at the empty space where the landing platform had occupied only moments ago.
“Sir!” Kix’s voice echoed from the far-end of the rooftop, the medic’s boots skidding through the puddles and coming to a stop beside the three of you. “Are you alright? What the kriff happened?”
“We’re okay.” Rex managed, turning to Fives. The ARC Trooper’s sobs had returned but were reduced to little more than gasping breaths, trying to steady himself in the aftermath of what he’d almost done.
Rex wrapped an arm around both of you, pulling you both against his shoulders and closed his eyes. Relief.
“We’re okay.”
Light - Jeong Yunho
summary: cool uncle by day but mafia boss at night, jeong yunho is ready for anything; except for falling in love.
tags: @couchpotatoaniki (yes i am tagging you bcs you blossomed this idea to me hihi)
A deep sigh left Yunho's lips, lighting up his cigarette and sticking it between his lips before releasing pearly white smoke. His once neat suit was now covered in sweat, dust and a trickle of blood from earlier events, singlehandedly killing a mafia group from the neighboring city. He lifted his wrist watch and checked the time - 10:01pm. Sandwiched between his middle and index finger, Yunho raises his cigearette stick onto his lips and puffed out a smoke.
His once cool composure broke when around the corner, the slim but curvy figure of his neighbor - y/n y/l/n came into view. She had her head hung low, shoulders drooping down and walking gloomily home. But Yunho stared at her. Around y/n, he felt like a high school boy who has a crush on her. He didn't also missed the fact that it was too late for y/n to go home. Work hours ends at 5-6pm, but 10? Yunho wondered if you took an overtime.
As y/n passed him by, he couldn't help but smile to himself. Feeling his face heating up. Getting up from the bench, he dropped his stick and stepped on it before following you home. With his hands tucked inside his pockets, Yunho wondered why you ever chose to live in a dangerous city like this. Was it because the rent's cheaper? Or to live close to your office?
He stopped his tracks and hid behind a pole, watching you get inside your home building safely. Watching you get home safely is what Yunho's been doing ever since you moved into the area and with a smile on his face, Yunho walks back home.
As the sun sets into the blue sky, Yunho packs up a lot of candies in his pocket before leaving his home and strolling to the neighborhood park. Clad in a bright red and white striped shirt and pants a bright smile on his face, Yunho would never be mistaken as someone who killed a group of guys last night. The cool breeze swept past him, causing his bangs to fly away.
As he found the children playing merrily and happily in the park, his heart swelled with an overwhelming feeling. How he wished these children would grow up into kind and humble adults. When the children saw him coming up to them, a chorus of "uncle Yunho!" greeted him, followed by all of them running up to him for a hug, some even hugging his legs.
Sitting down on the wooden bench, he gave each child a piece of candy and chocolate. Their little smiles upon tasting the fruity and sweet treats brought a smile on his lips too. However, Yunho mentally did a head count on the children.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. One was missing, and the one missing happened to be his favorite. He was about to open his mouth and ask them where y/s/n when a small but cheerful "uncle Yunho!" greeted him from behind. Turning around, his eye's widened.
His neighborhood crush, holding an ice cream cone with one hand and the other holding hands with his favorite child from the playground.
"Mommy this is uncle Yunho! He's the one who always watches us and gives us candy when we play here!" A deep shade of red plastered on Yunho's cheeks. Slowly he turned away and sunk a bit lower on his seat, feeling himself getting shy. But he was a little surprised to know that y/n has a son.
Yunho watched as y/s/n joined the other kids in the slide and on his left side became occupied by you.
"Doesn't it get a little sad when you watch them slowly grow up? One day they are only crying for attention and the next thing you know you walk with them to preschool." Y/N spoke, taking a lick on the vanilla cone.
"Do you have kids at home?" Yunho shook his head. But he would very much like to have one with y/n.
"I'm y/n by the way!" He looked at the hand extended out for him to shake before looking at your smile. Yunho's heart beated loudly inside his chest, not missing the sight of the ice cream on the corner of your lip. He slowly leaned in and raised his hand, wiping the cream away with his thumb.
"Nice to meet you, y/n. I'm Yunho." He smiled at you, seeing that pink tint across your cheeks. Yunho thanked the gods that this might be the chance for him to properly talk to y/n. He turned to his side and striked up a conversation with you, slightly getting distracted with the way how you lick your ice cream.
"Uh..hello? Earth to Yunho?" Yunho snapped out of his trance and shook his head, batting his eyelashes. Yunho stared at you. "What was that again?"
"I was asking you earlier if you wanted to have lunch with me and y/s/n. Think of it as a thank you for watching over my son." Turning his head, he saw the children leave one by one until it was your son left sitting in the swing.
"I-I would love to!" He blurted out, maybe a little too loud. Yunho suddenly backed away, suddenly feeling shy but he only found y/n chuckling at him.
"That was cute. Anyways, let's me show you where I live." As Y/N got up, so did he. He took the pleasure of carrying y/s/n in his arms as he followed you to your place, he had to pretend he didn't know where you lived. How was he going to explain that he has been following you for months already?
"Welcome to our place!" Spoke Y/N in a cheerful tone. The place didn't look half bad. As he sets y/s/n down and removes his shoes by the doorway, he took in the appearance of your place. It isn't big nor small, perfect for two people living, light wooden floors, cream colored walls, yellow and green cupboards and a mini bookshelf thats occupied by books about numbers, letters, alphabets and story books.
"This is a nice place you've got" Yunho says, sitting down on the couch only to be sunk lower as he didn't noticed how the couch was small.
"I guess I was lucky to find this one. More greenery in the province than just seeing buildings in the city." Y/N spoke, Yunho watched her enter the kitchen. He got up and excitedly followed her like a high school boy following his crush around school.
"What are you going to make there?" He asks as he stood behind Y/N making her jump a little. Yunho didn't realized how close he has gotten to her, but he felt like his heart would burst at how small she is close to him.
"Does pasta sound nice?" Y/N tilted her head to the side. If only his mornings were spent this close to y/n, Yunho would be in heaven already.
As Yunho was about to say something, in came little y/s/n holding his school bag.
"Mommy, can you help me with my homework?"
Two heads snapped to look at y/s/n who stood by the doorway of the kitchen.
"Your mom would love to!" Yunho smiled at y/s/n, held y/n by her shoulders and pushed her out of the kitchen despite her many protests against it. Yunho opened the fridge to check what ingredients were available, he grabbed whatever he needed and placed them on the counter and started cooking.
It was only like last night, he was using the very same knife to slice throats and now he's slicing meat with the same knife. But Yunho was only occupied by the merry thought of cooking for his crush.
After half an hour passed, Yunho beautifully plated three pasta bowls on the table. He gave himself a pat in the back for doing an excellent job and was about to call y/n and y/s/n to eat when he heard some talking.
"Mommy do you like uncle Yunho?" A small voice, y/s/n, as Yunho thought. His heart raced upon hearing this kind of conversation. There was a moment of silence, Yunho was fidgeting to know your answer.
"Mommy can uncle Yunho be my dad?" Yunho clutched his chest dramatically, pretending to wipe a tear from his eye. But there it was again, that silence.
"Let's see, y/s/n. Want to see uncle Yunho if he's done?"
Yunho started to get up from his spot but hit his knee in the process, an inaudible sound came out of his mouth and suddenly the door swung open. Y/N and Y/S/N stared at him with a blank yet confused looks on their faces.
"Uh..lunch is ready!" Yunho smiled and instantly stood up from the ground. As he lead them to the kitchen, he was proud to see their expressions and sat down, paying attention to y/n's reaction before eating.
"So what do you do, Yunho?" Y/N asked while twirling pasta with her fork.
Yunho racked up his brain to think of what should he say. But he choked up in between.
"I'm unemployed at the moment" He says. There was no way he is ever going to tell that he kills people, raids warehouses and factories and regulates drug deals within in and out of the country. "What about you? What do you do for a living?" Yunho gulped the food down his throat before facing you.
"I, uh...I just work at, at a very boring corporate office. They don't pay much."
"Is that why you do overtime and get home late at night?"
"What?"
"What?"
Yunho stared at y/n wide eyed. That was wrong of him suddenly mentioning it to you. He shook his head and carried on the conversation by changing the topic.
For the whole afternoon, Yunho stayed with Y/N and Y/S/N, watching kids movies while having a snack. Y/S/N falling asleep in the middle of the movie. Yunho took the pleasure of letting y/s/n sleep on his chest, he could get used to being a househusband. With the sun setting, Yunho thought it was best for him to go home. But was stopped by y/n to join them for dinner. On the outside, Yunho thanked you. But on the inside, Yunho was giggling.
He cooked once more in the kitchen, clogging out y/n's protests. Dinner became a happy meal as all three of them became full. While y/n was cleaning up in the kitchen, Yunho asked permission if he could take y/s/n out for a walk, promising he'd be home by 8pm.
Yunho took y/s/n to the convenient store, handing him a whole bar of chocolate in his small hands. But the little boy stared at him.
"But mommy says I can't have too much sweets" the small boy pouted.
"But your mom isn't here right? This'll be our little secret. You and me." Yunho grinned at the small boy who flashed a toothy smile in front of him.
"Uncle Yunho do you like my mommy?"
"Very much." Yunho suddenly stopped as he looked back at the child with him, now grinning at him.
"Okay, that's another secret between us. Don't tell your mommy about that too okay?" The small boy nodded his head quickly, Yunho held his hand and walked back home with him. Unaware of two eyes following them as they head back.
