The Wrong One
Steve Rogers x Reader, Bucky Barnes x Reader
Summary: Reader meets Steve while he's on the run and sticks by him. Until he sees Peggy Carter again.
7. The Calm
Warnings: swearing, angst, dirty thoughts
"I want her contact information yesterday"
Steve's attempt to yell gave him a coughing fit, Sam gave him some water and rubbed his back until the coughing calmed.
Once he was sure Steve was alright, Sam shook his head "No Steve, I can't give you her info. She doesn't want to talk to you."
Steve looked at him sadly "But it's my kid, Sam. Even after what happened I still deserve-"
"By what happened you mean how you left her for Peggy? What about what Y/N deserves? Did she deserve to be left like that? Without even a warning? You know I'm not good with what you did."
Sam got up to leave "I shouldn't have told you. You already had your happily ever after, at her expense. Just forget about her and enjoy your retirement."
"Fine Sam, just go. I'll get it out of Bucky." Steve called out weakly.
Sam swore and called Bucky as soon as he got in his car but got his voicemail and left a brief message.
Y/N was trying to build the crib she had bought, and wasn't doing great at it, when she heard a knock at her door. Her stomach dropped, like it did every time she heard someone at the door since she saw Bucky.
She wasn't thrilled to see Bucky now but was relieved it wasn't Steve. "What do you want Bucky? I'm busy."
"Hi Doll. I wanted to see how you were doing."
She scoffed "Obviously I'm fine so you can leave now."
Bucky shook his head "I'm so sorry. I had to come warn you. I didn't mean to but I messed up and told Sam that I saw you. I told him to keep Steve out of it but you know how he is."
Her eyes grew wide "You did what?!" She screeched and slapped him "What the Hell is wrong with you? I can't deal with him."
Her chest tightened and felt like she couldn't get enough air and she started hyperventilating "P p please Bucky. She's mine!"
Bucky caught her as her knees buckled, smoothly sitting on the couch and pulling her into his lap "Hey, hey it's ok doll. I've got you. I'll help, however you need me. I'm here. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry" he whispered into her hair and rubbed her back gently until her breathing calmed.
Y/N tried to get up but between Bucky's hug and her own growing body, could barely move. She tugged on his jacket "You can let go, I'm alright."
Bucky reluctantly eased his grip "Please just let me know what I can do. I'll help you move away or whatever you need."
She shook her head "I can't leave, I'm carrying a super soldier baby and need a doctor with experience with enhanceds. Besides, the only friend I have left is Pepper."
She glared at him "I wish I could say I can't believe you told Sam or that Sam would tell Steve but I can't. I'm pretty sure the three of you share a brain."
She thought for a moment and sighed "Are you any good at putting things together? I've been fighting with that damn crib since yesterday."
Bucky grinned "I'm pretty handy, lead the way."
"Don't get cocky, I'm still pissed at you and if Steve does show up you get to fight him off for me."
Bucky smirked "I guess that means I'm staying here for now."
She stopped and he almost bumped into her "I don't think so, Barnes. I don't need you lurking around my home. Pepper and Happy made sure I have the best security money can buy, I'd be pretty impressed if Steve or even you, could get past it."
"How am I supposed to keep Steve away from you if I'm not with you? You know I-" he stopped when her phone rang.
She pulled her phone out of her pocket and looked at the screen 'Sammy'. She shook her head "Oh look, it's Curly. $20 says he told Moe."
She took a deep breath and answered "Hey Sammy, what's up?"
"Hey Y/N, is the cyborg there? He's not answering his phone."
She snickered "Of course Larry is here, Curly. I take it you told Moe? You three are worse than teenagers.
What do you need, Sam?"
Sam sighed "I screwed up, I'm sorry. I think Steve deserved to know but I refuse to give him your contact info."
Y/N scoffed "Yeah, how did you get my contact info? You guys really suck at respecting boundaries, you know? And I'm full up on whatever the great Steve Rogers deserves. I appreciate you not giving him my info but you aren't the only spy he knows. He will find a way."
"I know, I was trying to do the right thing. Still am."
"Right by who, Sam? You know, it doesn't matter. It's done now. I just need to figure things out."
She hung up the phone while Sam was still talking and went to check on Bucky and the crib. She scoffed when she saw he was almost done and it actually looked like the picture.
Bucky looked up at her and grinned before tightening the last screws "How's it look?"
She sighed "Like the picture, asshole. Don't forget to clean up your mess here."
He laughed "That mess was already here when I got here but I'll take care of it anyways."
Y/N left the room grumbling under her breath. "Mister fuckin smart ass super soldier fixes shit I spent all morning on Telling his asshole friends my business and thinks we're all good now."
"To be fair I'm not the one who told Steve and I-"
"Are you sure that's the hill you want to die on? Your actions led to him finding out and that's more stress on this already very high risk pregnancy, so don't fucking nit pick on me."
Bucky put his hands up in surrender "Ok, ok, ok. You're right. I'm sorry, I fucked up. What else can I help you with?"
She lowered herself into a cushioned rocking chair and stretched her legs out. "Well" she thought for a moment, making Bucky nervous "Why don't you bring my foot stool over so I can put my feet up. I'll order lunch. Pepperoni pizza ok? Good."
Bucky found her foot rest, brought it over and gently set her feet up on it, noticing that they were pretty swollen. He sat on her coffee table, gently picked up one foot and started massaging it.
It tickled at first and she tried not to giggle but then he hit the aching arch of her foot and she couldn't hold back a moan, jerking her foot back when she realized.
Bucky smirked and gently pulled the foot back into his lap "It's ok doll, I won't judge. You have any lotion?"
She pointed at the coffee table behind him, he grabbed the lotion, put some on his hand, warmed it up and got back to work.
He didn't mention how touching her skin, feeling her warmth and hearing that moan made him twitch, figuring she wouldn't appreciate it.
After a few minutes, he took her other foot and she looked at him curiously "I'll probably regret asking but where did you learn foot massage? Some kind of Hydra torture method?"
Bucky laughed out loud, throwing his head back and her core clenched at the sound. She noticed how he scrunched up his nose and wanted to touch his face. Or his-. She stopped that train of thought, convincing herself it was just pregnancy hormone induced desire, any man could cause it.
When his laugh calmed she looked away and he cleared his throat "When I was a kid around 10, and my mom was pregnant with my sister Rebecca, she had to work at a drug store after my dad died. Being on her feet all day while pregnant was rough, especially in the later months. I would have dinner ready when she came home and after we ate she would read to me while I rubbed her feet." He choked up a little "She said that our evenings together and those footrubs helped her keep going when things got bad. After Becca was born we kept the routine. She loved reading."
Y/N looked at him sadly and tried to lean forward to wipe a tear off of his face but couldn't reach past her belly and started laughing at herself. A little hysterical. Laughing at him, herself, Sam. She tried to breathe and calm down but it only got worse.
Bucky was beaming, her laugh was beautiful and he promised himself he would do everything he could to make her laugh every day.
He couldn't help but laugh too until he saw her glaring at him again and stopped. "What?"
"What the Hell Barnes? You laughing because the fat pregnant lady can't reach you? That's fucked up."
Buckys face paled and he panicked, they were doing so well. His heart raced "Nn no nonono, doll I wasn't laughing at you, I was- I mean I'm sor-" he looked down.
She poked his leg with her toe and when he looked up her smile was blinding "Gotcha!" and laughed out loud.
Bucky grinned "That's not playing fair, honey. I can't get back at a pregnant woman."
Y/N shook her head "Nope. Don't you even pull that 'fair' crap on me. You owe me big time Barnes and I'll joke on you whenever the mood strikes."
He nodded "Fair enough. I'll be your metaphorical punching bag for now."
She laughed and gently punched his right arm "Who said it would be metaphorical?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Over the next few weeks Bucky spent more time at Y/N's brownstone in Queens than his own apartment. He had put together all the baby furniture, painted and helped her organize the babys room, ran all her errands except doctors appointments that he took her to, cleaned and cooked plus rubbing her feet and lower back every night.
Sam came over a couple of times and brought offerings for the baby plus flowers and chocolate for Y/N.
It was a fragile sort of peace that all three of them knew couldn't last. Something was bubbling up and when it boiled over things were going to get messy.
Bucky still hadn't spoken to Steve and didn't really want to. Steve called him a couple of times but Bucky never picked it up or responded to any messages.
Steve started off refusing Sam's calls, then blocked him and when Sam stopped by, Steve's live in nurse always insisted he wasn't feeling well.
Y/N tried not to think about it too much, the pregnancy itself was stressful enough. She had to get check ups every week to be sure and catch any problems early. Judging by her size, weight gain and ultrasound pics Helen Cho figured the baby was over 7lbs already, lungs fully developed, and Y/N was only technically 6 months along. If the baby went over 9lbs they would deliver her by c-section.
She also tried not to think about how handsome Bucky was or how helpful and 'fatherly' he was being. Or how long it had been since she had sex. Or wondering if the serum had enhanced him like it had Steve. If she let herself think about it she would daydream about begging him to ruin her, about going for hours until she begged him to let her rest. She failed to not think about him fucking her into her bed and had too many dreams where he did just that but she always woke up before she finished.
They went for walks through the park to make sure she got her exercise, holding hands and receiving all the compliments on her glow, congrats on the baby, etc.
She was fine until someone commented on what a handsome couple they made and she felt the butterflies moving again, shaking her head.
Bucky just squeezed her hand and thanked them for the compliment.
They were so caught up in each other, without realizing it, that they didn't notice the person following them, taking pictures.
They definitely didn't notice the scowl on that persons face or the growl when he saw they were holding hands and how they looked at each other.
They didn't hear much over the sounds of kids playing outside. Like a bottle hitting a wall and breaking across the street as they went back into her home.
Not teasing. The weight on Steve’s chest widened, a familiar measure of dread that lasted all summer, long after the hand-me-down sweater stopped smelling like Bucky. It really would’ve been easier if he were teasing. — Five times Steve tried on Bucky’s clothes, and the one time they fit.
just saw a post about endgame and i am now obligated to rehash the same rant i have every time i think about that movie
as a writer it is so, so fucking personal to me the way they absolutely WRECKED steve’s character. i have other issues with the movie, plot holes and implausibilities that were glossed over for the glory of the culmination of an unprecedented decade-long creation of such an intricate web of plot and character and meaning. i think the movie, as an event, was cool as hell, but i have many bones to pick with it, most especially steve FUCKING rogers going back in time.
how are you gonna look an entire fandom, millions of people, in the eye, and deliberately throw out YEARS of character development and the literal basis of his character?
how are you going to tell me that steve “if I see a situation pointed south, I can't ignore it” rogers, steve “i had ‘em on the ropes” rogers stepped away from the biggest fight of his life, from rebuilding a world that needed him more than ever, to go back in time and, what, retire to the countryside with his old flame? am i expected to believe that he just sat down and watched history play out, without doing anything to prevent the tragedies? to save his friends before they ever even come into existence? to save BUCKY?
how are you going to tell me that steve “til the end of the line” rogers, who spent at least 3 movies and over 70 years relentlessly fighting his way back to bucky, just ended the line of his own volition???
and what about peggy? if we’re to believe he truly loved her, and also respected her as a person and was generally the embodiment of chivalry and also a good man, how are we supposed to believe that he interrupted her life? she was one of the few people he had after coming out of the ice; he knew she lived a full life without him and found a love of her own. he knew about all the accomplishments she and her whole ass HUSBAND had. how are we supposed to believe that the man who threw himself onto a grenade when he was still 90 pounds soaking wet could do something so selfish as to reinsert himself into peggy’s life, knowing she had built another?
also, once again: BUCKY. whether you think their relationship is romantic or purely platonic, they are undeniably soulmates and have spent lifetimes trying to find each other. and they are finally in a time where they can both heal and be happy and be together, in whatever capacity, and steve just threw that away? NO!!
mcu canon is dead to me; it’s been over 4 years and i am STILL ANGRY
Hey, you sent me a reply on that Bucky-Steve post, I have the notification for it but can't read what you wrote. do you remember what you typed? the stupid note on my activity page will bother me otherwise i can imagine. :)
Yeah, sorry, looks like replies were closed on the post just as I put it in, and it doesn't appear there for me any longer either.
Don't recall my exact wording, but basically I go by what's shown and told on the screen in the actually released film(s) and shows, over even writer's room Word of God, especially when the latter contradicts what the directors and producers and even actors have said. As such,
We know Steve stopped off in 1948 for that promised dance with Peggy, and what Old Mr. Rogers then says about having lived a wonderful life at least implies that he stuck around and they had a happy marriage - although he doesn't share details about what that entailed.
The rules of Endgame time travel as explained in the movie means that he doesn't affect his own past history in the main movie timeline, just as the Thanos of 2014 learning about Pym particles and using them to travel to the present and get dusted by Tony doesn't mean that suddenly the Blip never happened.
Therefore, there is at least one long-lasting timeline in which Steve of the main movieverse has changed the fate of at least Peggy and himself and we are led to believe they are happy together for many years. Whatever the TVA's general policy of pruning such timelines before He Who Remains is eliminated and the multiverse explodes into numerous possibilities again, at least this one is allowed to last for decades and decades, otherwise Old Mr. Rogers couldn't have lived through them.
We can therefore conclude that a) MainSteve is not averse to branching off and changing the history of an alternate timeline he's living in and b) he is able to maintain a stable relationship with the Peggy Carter of said alternate timeline.
If 4a is true, then there is no reason to believe he would be averse to making further changes that seem like an improvement to the original history, and even if he's tired, retired, and done at this point, Peggy Carter is likely to do so - because there's no way that 4b is true if Steve even tries to keep Big Secrets like Zola reforming Hydra as a parasite organization within SHIELD or Bucky's current whereabouts or the future assassination of their mutual friend Howard from her for decades. First off, she's Peggy Carter, it is practically inevitable she'll eventually find out and then either kick him to the curb or downright kill him, but even if that were not the case I submit that Steve, even after what he's lived through, wouldn't even think of trying to hide stuff from her. And categorically speaking, if he were, that wouldn't actually be a happy marriage or a wonderful life with all that hanging over the relationship.
Even more long-winded than the first one, but I think my logic based solely on what we see on screen holds up.
(Warning: rape of a minor, physical and mental trauma, fear,death, and foul language)
(This is an alternate timeline taking place after endgame as such there are spoilers the point of view is entirely Steve Rogers aka Captain America this takes place in California)
I was still crying. Tony was dead, I'd finally retired from being Captain America, I was finally just a regular street cop, and Tony was dead. I heard a comforting voice "Hey, are you okay" he said, Bucky. I responded "N-not really, I can't believe he's really dead" Bucky said comforting "I know, we've all been affected" I smiled at him "thanks Bucky". Bucky said "what else am I good for" I smiled and tried to respond with "being h-" I was cut off by my radio saying "218 through 261 in the area" I,panicking, asked Bucky "where's Parker" his face turned confused then understanding than angry. He said "they're probably expecting us, I'll go first," to my face he said "no arguing you're stronger" I said "I've got a better idea, you go into the allyway opposite searching for flanking goons, I'll go save Parker" I started running, Bucky ahead of me slightly till I heard a scream. I entered the alley and was horrified. Parker's arms and legs were locked inside titanium alloy restraint gloves and boots, his street clothes in a crumpled pile told me the rapist was just prepared for the worst, the man was, oh God, he was forcing Parker on his hands and feet and was plowing him, some goons were holding knives, I sprung into action, the goons were on the floor in a second, the rapist tripping so I breathed a sigh of relief knowing that if he had gotten away this would have got messy, I arrested him picking a key from his pocket and unlocking Parker's restraints, he got dressed then said "thank you officer Rogers", I said " your we-" my heart stopped. Bang. Scream. I ran to the opposing alley saying "sorry kid be right back". I saw Bucky, bloody from beatings, the goons on the floor were all in cuffs, he was howling, shot in the abdomen. I talked to Parker and walked him home talking into my radio "kid is safe, I'm walking him home, the rapist and his buddies are in cuffs, pick them up in the alley next to King's Jewles on Sunder Street, watch for assassins, as a sniper just ran off," I breathed "the sniper shot a guy, I'm taking him to the hospital as fast as possible" Parker said to someone "Hey mind covering me, this man needs to help this guy" the man said "sure" I watched them closely, watching when they thought I couldn't see them, I breathed a sigh of relief, the man pulled out his gun and started walking Parker to the airport, presumably to take him back to New York. I ran fast, we arrived at the hospital and I said "his name is Bucky Barnes, he was shot in the abdomen, put him under my insurance" the attendant said "last name then first name please" I said "Rogers,Steve" she said "and your guy is Barnes,Bucky" I said "yes". Bucky was taken in at last. After a few days I was let in. "Hey Bucky" I said, to which he said "Steve, what are you doing here" I said "I brought you here,"going next to him I said "are you okay" he said "great,never better, I've just been shot in the fucking abdomen, after getting beaten" I said "yeah, that was a dumb question" he said "I think I've got a better one" I said "yeah". My heart was close to bursting. He said "do you love me Steve" I said, with realization, "fuck yes Bucky" he smiled "will you be my boyfriend" I said "absolutely". My heart was born anew with love. For him, for all the love I'd denied. He was out of the hospital a week later, hand in mine.I still hated what happened. I talked to him about the ordeal. We made sure Parker was safe, his aunt was understandably pissed. We were together for months till this year, our anniversary. I wanted to do something special so i rented a hotel for the two of us. I said "can I ask you a question" he said "go ahead" I asked "can I kiss you" he said "yes, absolutely, I've never wa-" I kissed him, ruffling up his hair, for hours. I was on fire with love. When we separated I said "you talk too much" he responded " you talk to little" giving me a sweet little kiss. I said "I love you" he said "I know,and I adore you" I smiled. I was finally in love.
Sunset's Beauty
Tumblr media
Characters:
Bucky Barnes x Reader
Summary:
Now that you and Bucky are retired from being part of the Avengers, it's now time you two prioritized living your happily ever after.
Warning:
Fluff
Words:
1.3k
You watch the two most important people in your life as they play and roam around the beach as the sunsets. The wind continues to embrace your skin, your feet playfully bury themselves to the sand as your lips form a smile from watching Bucky and your son, Calix. And watching them made little flashbacks in your mind, remembering all the things you and Bucky have been through after you two retired from being part of the Avengers.
The sight of the hallway and the briefing room on your last day in the compound is still fresh in your mind, how each agent you pass by says their best wishes for you and Bucky's upcoming wedding and retirement, how Fury hugged you and thanked you for being part of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Avengers, how Sam held back his tears when he saw you and Bucky loading your bags on your car.
It wasn't an easy decision to make for you and Bucky. The two of you have been part of the Avengers for the past years of your lives and being part of it is what you two believe is the main highlight of your lives. However, your last mission made you two realized that life is too short to take everything for granted. Bucky almost lost you in the last mission, and so he promised himself, he won't take any single second for granted anymore.
So after your last day in the compound, you and Bucky planned a simple wedding. The only ones who are invited are your close family and friends. It was just a simple ceremony to share with the few people who made you two destined for each other.
And five years later, here you are, living your lives together in the best way possible you could think of.
A year after you and Bucky got married, you got pregnant and soon gave birth to a healthy baby boy. You and Bucky named him Calix, which means very handsome. Bucky would always be annoyed when people would tell both of you that Calix looks like you, but you would always tell Bucky that Calix got his eyes from him and your son's charm no doubt came from your husband.
The first few months of being parents were hard for you, especially after you gave birth but Bucky made it easier for you. He never left your side. He will always take the night shift in taking care of Calix and you. He will volunteer to change the diapers no matter what he was doing. He will carry Calix and roam him around the house just to entertain the crying baby, night and day, even though you'd see him yawn while doing it.
"Mommy!"
That angelic voice of your son made all your flashbacks disappear in thin air. You saw him running towards you, and Bucky was behind him, following his footsteps.
You opened your arms and Calix immediately hugged you, "Aww! My baby is not so baby anymore," you commented as he wrapped his arms around you.
Calix is all grown up, but to you and Bucky, he's still the same 8.7 lbs. baby you gave birth to. He was the biggest baby in the nursery at that time and that explained the stretch marks you had when you were pregnant with him. But no matter how many stretch marks you had, the joy of seeing him for the first time will always make everything worth it.
"Time for a new baby, I guess?" Bucky naughtily suggested, which made you glare at him and made him chuckle afterward.
It's a good thing Calix is too young to understand his dad's naughtiness. He just sat down on your lap and showed you the seashells he and Bucky collected while they were playing and roaming around the seashore.
"Wow! That's a lot of seashells. Are you gonna bring it home and hang it in your room?" you asked him.
Calix nodded, "'Gonna show this first to grandpa!" he stood up and run towards the beach house that your parents own, leaving you and Bucky alone together.
It's summertime and you got an invitation from your parents to spend a quick summer vacation in this beach house, also so they can spend time with Calix.
You find the invitation perfect since you and Bucky wanted to go somewhere this summer to spend quality time together. Your parents happily offered to take care of Calix while you and Bucky have time for each other as well, and you knew why they wanted for you and Bucky to have lots of time alone together. They wanted to have another grandchild, which you and Bucky already discussed.
"Can't believe we've gone this far already," Bucky uttered out of nowhere, making your eyes met his.
"Uh-oh, someone's being sentimental," you joked as you motion him to lay down on the picnic blanket and rest his head on your thighs.
He lay down and rested his head on your thighs, his eyes are looking up at yours, "I just...I just can't believe it has been five years since I got married to the most wonderful woman I've ever met in my entire life," he grabbed your hand and kissed the back of it.
You run your fingers through his hair, "And I can't believe you're this cheesy because when we first met you were the grumpiest," you joked again.
Bucky was telling the God damn truth -- the two of you have gone far already.
It was like only yesterday when you two first joined forces in a mission and you two hated each other's guts, but eventually you two found that way to fall in love with each other. And that's something you and Bucky owe to your Avengers' life. Because of it, you met each other and got married.
You thought, if only Nat, Steve, and Tony were also there to see how good your life with Bucky is, you bet they'll be happy for both of you. But wherever they are, you know they are looking down up there, smiling ear to ear because they can see from wherever they are that you and Bucky are happy together.
Just like any other relationship, you and Bucky experienced highs and lows, turns and twists, but what's important is that you two never gave up and always think of why you two were together in the first place, because of love.
"Y/n, can I ask you something?" he sounded so serious this time.
Your brows raised, "What?" you asked him, still running your fingers through his hair.
"Do you regret our decision?"
Without mentioning what decision he's pointing out, you knew what it is.
"Bucky," you cupped his cheek and smiled at him, "It was the best decision I've ever made in my entire life. It was a sad decision to make, it was sad to leave the life we got used to, but it was only a matter of time before we choose to live the life we want to and this is it. I'd still choose that decision over and over again, knowing that you and Calix will be the best result of that decision," you told your husband.
Bucky got up from your lap and this time, he was the one who cupped your face, "Same goes with me." He let go of your cheek and grabbed your hand, "I'm living my best life with you and Calix. So thank you, thank you for doing this with me."
"No," you shook your head, "I should be the one thanking you," you retorted. "Thank you for putting me and Calix your number one and only priority. Thank you for making me this happy," you proclaimed.
Instead of answering your gratitudes, his hand traveled to the back of your neck and pull you towards him to give your lips a kiss.
His kiss was soft and pure of love. All you could sense is how much he loves you and how willing he is to sacrifice anything for you and your family, that's what you both did five years ago.
And no matter where life takes both of you, it doesn't matter, as long as you two are together, everything is in its right place.
Oh How The Mighty Have Fallen
Alexandra Simmons.... Agent of SHIELD. Missing in action since 1963, she's given up hope on ever being rescued. Prologue
Everyone has a preconceived idea of what it means to be a superhero. Most think of the grandeur, the fame and fortune that comes with saving the world.
They don't think about the sacrifice. Or the days where you can't get out of bed because you're too caught up in the decisions you shouldn't have made. The lives that were lost along the way.
Truth is, most heroes are broken. They've lost more than any one person should ever have to endure and yet, they persist. For you. And for me. And if they're lucky, they might be able to find small minuscule shreds of happiness along the way, though it's rare. Heroism isn't glamorous.
It's tragic.
But between the tragedy and the happiness are these small seemingly insignificant moments that can change everything. They make you stop, take a minute, and reflect on your choices. How did you end up here?
For Steve Rogers, that moment was when he began to plummet into oblivion from a destroyed Hellicarrier. And when the water washed over him, stealing his breath and darkening his vision, he thought. He thought about his life, about his friend that seemed oh so lost. And he thought about that beautiful woman he left back in 1943. And Steve Rogers welcomed the darkness.
But life was cruel.
With the sound of soft jazz, Steve Rogers was welcomed back into the twenty-first century. He looked to see his friend Sam Wilson next to him, reading a magazine. And yet, he had hoped to see a different friend at his bedside. A fake smile was plastered onto his face, fake happiness in his tone, everything was fake. Steve Rogers had been faking since he came out of the ice. Not that he'd admit it.
"I hope you weren't planning on getting any rest." Sam's face was solemn as he fished a piece of paper from Steve's soaked uniform.
"Your friend? He left you this. The nurse's found it when they were changing you." As Steve's eyes roved over the small slip of paper, his eyes hardened, a hard set making it's way into his jaw. On it, was a set of coordinates, coordinates that would change everything he thought he knew. Underneath, two words. Help Her.
---
For Alexandra Simmons, her moment was the day she shook Howard Stark's hand for the first time. That had been the beginning of everything. It had been the beginning of her hell on earth. And now, as she sat chained inside her cell, water dripping from the ceiling above, she silently prayed today would be the day they decided to put her out of her misery.
But this day was merciful.
Gunfire permeated the silence, panic washing over the faces of each scientist outside her cell. Mumblings passed through the room, soon turning to loud shouts and screams. Files and various other papers were shoved into coat pockets, her form being forgotten as they attempted to escape whatever, or whoever, was coming. Clanging bars caused her to look towards the door, rough hands yanking her upwards. Her body was weak, too weak to resist, but this wasn't any normal relocation.
And Alexandra was not a quitter.
Thin hands grabbed ahold of rusted metal, knuckles turning white, teeth gritting in determination as she remained steadfast and unmoving. Her efforts were met with a literal slap to the face, a ring splitting her lip.
And Alexandra smiled.
It was almost sadistic, the grin she let spread across her mouth. The grin eventually developed into full laughter, eyes focused on something behind the man's head. A sickening crunch sounded, a large red stain blooming on the scientist's red coat as a blade was thrust from his chest. A splash of red swept across Alexandra's face, red that for once wasn't hers. Her knees began to shake, vision swimming as she attempted to look at her saviors. But the uniform that greeted her had been retired long ago. It was impossible. Unless it wasn't.
Her recovery had been slow. At first, she spent time in what Steve could only call total catatonia. She was awake. Her eyes were open, fixed on the pristine white ceiling above her head. Banner had said it was trauma, that what she'd been through was easier to cope with if she didn't allow herself to be awake.
Her photo had been compared to missing persons all across the world, the results staggering. They'd expected many things, a grieving family, an innocent woman who had nothing to do with their life. A missing SHIELD agent from the 60's wasn't it. The doctors didn't know how she was even alive. Besides the fact that she was supposed to be in her seventies, the effects of torture were more than obvious. Scars, burns, and various bruises mapped their way across her skin, telling various stories Steve would rather not have to hear. They called it pure determination to live. Tony had called her too stubborn to die. Banner took her blood after the first week to try and figure out what they'd done to her. After a month of her being unresponsive, they'd declared her a lost cause.
Steve Rogers didn't believe in lost causes.
Bucky had proven he was still in there somewhere, still fighting against who he'd been forced to become. And if he could overcome. So could she. So Steve did the only thing he knew how to do. He sat next to her bedside between missions, and simply talked. He went over his most recent missions, the terrible and the good that came with being a superhero.
One day she smiled.
His eyes had widened, grinning as she turned her head to look at him for the first time. She said nothing, but she didn't have to. Progress was being made.
The second month she sat up for the first time. Her muscles were stiff and sore, protesting to the movement. But with his help, she'd persisted.
The third month she'd gotten out of bed for the first time. Her legs had shaken and trembled at the unfamiliar movement. But she was determined. She'd yet to speak, but Steve knew she was listening intently to each word he uttered.
By the fourth month Steve looked forward to his visits with her. The most she'd done was smile at him, her eyes gleaming with joy at every spoken sentence. Until one day when he told her about the battle of New York, how Tony had grabbed a Nuke and carried it through the wormhole to space.
"I knew his father, Howard." Her voice had been rough, broken from going unused, but it was audible. He'd looked at her with such pride that day.
The rest of the team had slowly introduced themselves after that. Her reaction to Thor had been almost childlike, eyes wide, glittering with happiness and laughter. It had blown up his ego far too much. She'd been intimidated by Natasha, the redhead's fiery personality a stark contrast to her current state. Clint's rough exterior had terrified her at first, but the first smile he sent her way made her relax entirely. Tony had been.....well....his usual self, but his antics made her laugh joyously. She and Banner had gotten along quite well, their intellect complimenting each other. And Steve, well, he liked to consider himself her friend. I guess that's where our story begins. A broken agent, a ninety-seven-year-old superhero, and a team of misfits, somehow coming together to bring down the most notoriously evil organization in the world. And it was going to be quite a ride.
You ask I deliver — both tfatws asks in one!
tfatws weekly ask 1
i finally saw ep1!! i wont be able to see ep2 until thursday at the earliest but i already have some Thots on this ep. here are the ones I remember
first is, and i'm so sorry for this, a grammar lesson. an appositive is when you stick an additional phrase in between commas, dashes, or the like. i actually just used one! the "and i'm so sorry for this" in the first sentence of this paragraph is an appositive. thing is, most english speakers don't normally use them when they speak, only in writing. so i'm always on high alert whenever i hear somebody in tv or movies use one. (it's generally a marker of bad screenwriting). anyway there was one right in the beginning of the episode. the white army guy yelling at sam wilson said "first lieutenant Torres, our intel officer, will be helping on the ground." yeah so. the writing of this series started out on the wrong foot for me. but the rest of the episode was obviously tons and tons better (every interview i see with malcolm spellman makes me love him more and more)
the contrast between the opening minutes (falcon action sequence) and the rest of the ep.... i would 100000/10 rather watch a series with just sam and bucky dealing with life. i dont give a single crap about the flag-smashers or any of that. i just want sam, sarah & fam getting their boating business back on the ground & yeeting racist dickwads, bucky going through therapy and making amends, sam and joaquin being bros, sambucky homoerotic tension, etc.
the cinnamontography! wandavision mostly used cinematography to signify era n stuff. tfatws doesn't have wv's premise to go off of, so here's some tricks i noticed:
with sam there's obviously all sorts of shots with the captain america iconography next to his face, but he hasn't totally claimed it. there's the mural of steve rogers in the background; there's sam staring into the shield like it's a spectre of steve's face; there's sam looking into the exhibit, the shield and sam separated by glass and a layer of camera focus. steve is a constant spectre, always there, an idea, a symbol himself. sam's relationship with this iconography is distanced. he is separated by glass exhibit walls. by painting canvases. he doesn't yet feel worthy to take on that iconography. this whole thing was pulled off quite well but also a bit on-the-nose if only in quantity. there's just sooooo much fancy iconography stuff
speaking of the exhibit, there's something that i get real pissy about. it's when like, there's an action going on you're supposed to be paying attention to but the cinematographer is like,,,, hey! check out this location! or this headline! or something! there was a lot of that in the exhibit. the camera was like, you could focus on sam and rhodey's convo (which was fine but could have been so much better with an extra like 10 minutes of deep character study talk) but noooo you want me to look at the symbol for the united nations and read all the text about bucky who hasn't even showed up yet. shut up i know the lore and ill watch the shot-by-shot breakdown yt vids you don't have to make the shot this long jkdsalcjklasejf
my fav trick was with bucky and the therapist. i had seen a clip of the scene with bucky and the therapist beforehand and i thought the cinnamontography was super obnoxious, but then i was like, oh duh. the shots frequently change the distance between the camera and its subject. sometimes it's uncomfortably close and sometimes it's really far. a clear allegory for the duality of therapy, esp for bucky! therapy is an invasive process wherein he is ruthlessly examined, picked apart, and berated for his trauma (this therapist is crap in every way btw, "mean therapist" works for greg house and greg house only). so the camera goes close. it makes the viewer claustrophobic like bucky. but when he's like "no i haven't had any nightmares" the camera suddenly goes really far. we see bucky as this tiny head in the center of the bottom of the frame. we are distanced from him. he has pushed us away. we cannot see him. he lies because he is vulnerable. so yeah, amazing work there. the therapy scene was hard to watch on purpose!
did bucky slip a note to yori inside the dollar bill? bucky stop making me emooooo. the suuper awkward fake smile has me 😭 (veteran trying to adjust!)
mark my worrrrds when sam asks someone y the govt picked john “white bread” walker they’re gonna say “we needed somebody everyone can get behind....someone uncontroversial, someone everyone can see themselves in” like that exact racist dog whistle
tfatws weekly ask 2
just saw ep2 so im taking advantage of the 2 seconds i can be on tumblr without worrying about tfatws spoilers before new episode drops
when isaiah said "your people put me in prison for being a hero" and bucky thought "your people" means hydra. 🤦‍♂️
speaking of racism, the interplay between sam being Black (anti-Black racism) and sam being the Falcon (negrophilia, "can i take a selfie w you as i deny you a loan?") and the intersection between the two (j*hn lichrally called sam "steve's wingman"! he takes the crypto out of crypto-racist in like 2 seconds!) !!!!!!!! a Black celebrity's Black experience, the separation of man and identity!!!! (thinking about vanessa bayer in snl in that skit "beyonce is black" telling her black friend "you're not black, you're...my girl!")
after sam gets racially profiled by cops we see j*hn standing in front of cop cars cinematic parallels turns out j*hn is racist who knew
this therapist sucks major ass but she got bucky and sam together in the same room and ready to collaborate...that's something ig. it was lichrally couple's therapy she said she used her miracle exercise with couples sambucky antis get blended
bucky says "he was wrong about you so maybe he was wrong about me"...that's not how people talk. when therapist asks bucky, the guy who doesn't talk at all about himself, "y do you hate sam", the last thing bucky's gonna do is actually connect his hatred of sam to his own self-worth issues. bucky generally refuses to talk about himself, so why would he talk about himself in the one context that nobody ever links back to their own neuroses: hatred of other people? one thing human beings hate most is admitting we're wrong. admitting you hate someone because of your own issues? that's a major therapeutic step. bucky would absolutely have to be prompted to do that. even like one or two lines of dialogue more would have set up that line better. but in terms of the actual thought? an amazing way to take the sam/bucky relationship. bucky bases his self-worth on steve believing in him, and if steve is wrong bucky has no self-worth, so 1) he has to develop self-worth disassociated from steve's assessment of him and 2) he has to love himself before he can love sam, and 3) he has to realize that sam giving up the shield is a sign of sam's humility not his unworthiness.
conversely, we don't get into why sam hates bucky? yeah sam has the right to hate a guy that has tried to kill him (albeit while brainwashed) multiple times, and now shows up in his life just to bash him but. everything happens so fast i cant follow their relationship
in fact i dont feel like i understood much of anything. like y did bucky and sam go on that mission together? how connected are sam/bucky/joaquin with the government? doesn't bucky just want to retire now? literally what is everyone doing/feeling and why???
if battlestar becomes a knowing commentary on the black best friend stereotype i'm gonna party, but i dont expect much of that
the interplay between man and symbol. captain america is obviously a symbol. the shield is obviously a symbol. but steve rogers? the. man behind the cowl? he too seems to become a symbol. a paragon of a good guy, so good he's unreachable. steve was just a guy stop idolizing him the last thing steve would want is to be idolized
as the resident musician/music nerd on mcublr, 1) that captain america rally music slaps, but 2) re: the song at the end of the ep, if you're just gonna rip off mozart's lacrymosa then at least play mozart's lacrymosa. we wont blame you the lacrymosa slaps (if you dont know what im talking about go on yt and search it up youll recognize it fo sho
look i love enfys nest as much as the next guy but if tfatws is gonna get erin kellyman to play another innocent little gurl blackmailed into the fakeout-villain position (her text seemed to suggest as such) then 😡 like why can't women just....be evil? young, freckly, innocent-looking women? girls are not untouchable pure objects but full of rage and resentment just as much as anyone can be
bonus ep1 comment: bucky says about that senator whose car he hijacked, "she continued to abuse the power i gave her." fictionaldarling on yt say that he says "i" because he can't disassociate himself from his winter soldier persona which begets endless and senseless guilt. like dude. can i not be emo for like 1 second.
OKay. First off, as much I enjoy your sending it to me, what made you decide to send me these??
TFATWS WA #1
Don't worry about getting this to me as early as possible. I usually don't watch the episode right away.
1. Cool writing lesson.
2. Everyone wants a comedy show [like Friends] about the MCU superheroes.
3. Cinematography is always a beautiful thing.
4. Sam definitely has to carve his own Captain America status for himself, outside of Steve's ya know everything.
5. They have to do that for people who was just now tuning in because they're in love with Sam Wilson or Sharon Carter.
6. I think the therapist was taking a 'tough love' approach for Bucky, because she likely has some very strong opinions about the literal assassin she's been assigned to give therapy too. She did not choose to talk to him, she was assigned that make that clear in the second episode.
And, Bucky isn't lying when he said it wasn't a nightmare. It wasn't a nightmare, it was a resurfaced memory. So, technically he wasn't lying - and yes, the camera does move away because while he's saying he didn't have a nightmare, he's not expanding on what actually happened - so, he's still pushing the therapist/us away.
7. Bucky, and Steve, have/had a TON to adjust to.
8. Yeah, I agree that will be the bullshit line they give. If they ever actually talk about it.
TFATW WA #2
Yeah, always got to take advantage of avoiding those spoilers lmfaoo.
1. Honestly, that line was double meaning. Both about White people and Hydra [which is made up of mostly white supremacists/nazis] So, the line is gesturing to both White People in general and Hydra assholes together. I think the terminology is “double edge sword”??
2. This whole paragraph structure confused me, ngl - so I'm going to answer it the best I can. I do like that they're not ignoring the fact that Sam being Black is 1000% the reason he's not the Official Captain America - because the gov't is racist as hell.
I also like the little lines about how they point out little things about Sam's Falcon persona, like that kid calling him 'Black Falcon' specifically and Sam's response show the split between Sam and Falcon itself.
John is a dick for calling Sam the wingman of Steve Rogers. Sam was a hero all on his own before Steve asked him to join up again. [Side note, it's lichrally??]
3. Exactly, the parallel of Sam being profiled and surrounded while just on the street and John being surrounded by fans and being able to spring Bucky with apparently only a few sentences shows a Loooooot
4. Honestly, at this point I wonder if she's not actually a therapist and is just an agent assigned to assess Bucky outside of an Official Building. I do know, however, that her 'look at each other and speak' exercise is actually a real therapy practice. It's just a little slower.
5. Actually, I think he would've blurted that out. That whole line. I don't think Bucky hates Sam. I think they could've done the scene better, but I think that had Sam prodded him/the therapist been more annoying Bucky would've lost control of his emotions and blurted out the whole "If he was wrong about you, he was wrong about me" but I feel like the writing for this show is just... not there. Sometimes you blurt shit when you get overemotional and I think that was what Bucky was supposed to be like.
6. I don't think Sam hates Bucky, I think he doesn't trust him though. I do wish they'd talked about that though. The whole 'talk to each other' scene should've been a LOT longer and a LOT slower.
7. Sam and Bucky's relationship is being fast tracked because they don't really know how to work the relationship out, writers-room-wise. Bucky is technically retired, but I feel like he's trying to live up to Steve's expectations and doing what Steve would've done and we all know that if Steve was there, Steve would've jumped on that plane with Sam. It looks like Sam/Bucky/Joaquin are a side-team based from Military services but as Sam says they're all free agents so...?
8. Sadly, They seem to just be propping up to be another stereotype.
9. Captain America is a symbol. Steve Rogers is a man. But now Steve Rogers is an idol because of all the shit he's been through and honestly, it's not a bad thing he's become an idol for people - it's using Steve as a reason to make White Bread Walker the next Captain that makes Steve's idolization so fucked.
10. I don't know anything about music so I have no opinion here, sorry.
11. Enfys?? Also, I think they did the whole Innocent Girl Thing as side commentary for Bucky lowering his guard about seeing a young girl rather than a guy.
12. Bucky is the Winter Solider. The Winter Solider is Bucky. That is how Bucky will always see it because although he was brainwashed, it was still him and he remembers all of it. When you have constant memories of something 'someone else' did, you tend to not be able to pull the two personas out of each other. I want Bucky to take up the title, White Wolf instead of Winter Soldier. Honest.
This is all my opinion, I’m honestly a little disappointed with the writing of TFATWS so far so... I’m not really optimistic about this.
When the Avengers raided the HYDRA base you were kept in, they found you inside a cryo-chamber sleeping peacefully. After every personnel was captured, they transferred you to the compound along with artifacts and files of experiments they performed. Eventually, they found your file. It was quite lengthy. Your father was working for HYDRA but he turned on them and planned to take them down. As a result, they silenced him and your mother. They knew that whatever he knew about HYDRA, he told her. They spared you because you were just a kid. Instead, you were out on the Thanatos program. It was your father's project and it was almost done up until his betrayal. They thought you would be perfect for the program. They could groom you to the perfect obedient soldier they needed. On top of that, what could be more cruel than using your father's work to torture you?
They gave you a version of the serum used on the winter soldiers, with their own upgrades of course. They incorporated it with the Extremis serum and that left you with a super soldier that can breathe fire. Phoenix, they called you. The ultimate weapon of death.
After briefing everyone on your situation, they woke you up. You stepped out of the chamber confused. You were met with unfamiliar yet kind faces that it overwhelmed you. You made a run for it and nearly burned down the entire medical wing before they tranquilized you again. You woke up in a small glass cell where they told you that they meant no harm. Somehow, you believed them.
That was a year and a half ago. Now, here you were walking around New York and trying your best to be part of society. After extensive amounts of therapy of course. You were on your way back when you saw an old man in a flower shop organizing his stalls. You were mesmerized by the flowers' beauty and found yourself crossing the street to get there.
"Looking for anything specific, ma'am?" he asked
"No, not really. Maybe something cheery?" God, why are you so socially awkward?
"Well, in that case," he said, "here are some sunflowers." He handed you a bouquet.
"My wife loves them. When she's upset, I get her these because they always look towards the sun and the color brightens up the room," he said with a smile.
"Thank you so much," you said as you handed him a $20 bill "Keep the change"
You were now back at the compound and you were rummaging through the kitchen in search of a vase. You didn't find any (Seriously? a state of the art training compound owned by a billionaire doesn't have a vase?)
"I guess a pitcher would do," you whispered to yourself as you headed to your room.
"What is that?" asked Tony.
"Sunflowers. Got it from the guy near the train station. It's a good metaphor when you think about it. They're always looking on the bright side. I didn't get many opportunities to go sunbathing when I was at HYDRA." you said with an awkward chuckle.
"Alright. Fair enough. I'm headed to MIT for the speech thingy. Wanna come?"
"Nah. I still have to catch up on culture." you giggled. Years of working for HYDRA also didn't give you a lot of me-time.
"Okay well if you change your mind, you know how to get there."
"Copy that."
You headed to your room. Yours. You actually owned something. You turned on your TV and scanned through the channels. Doctor Who reruns? Sure. Hours had passed and you've scanned through hundreds of channels. You decided to turn on some news in the background while you read.
"On breaking news, eleven Wakandans are amongst those confirmed dead after a violent clash between the Avengers and independent mercenaries in Nigeria." Your head bolted up and you reached for the remote to turn the volume up.
"Brock Rumlow, former SHIELD agent, led the team of mercenaries to procure a biological weapon being tested at the Center for Disease Control Nigeria Division. It was believed to be a suicide mission as eyewitness account said Rumlow wore a type of bomb in his vest. Avenger Wanda Maximoff contained the explosion only to have the blast thrown into a building killing a total of 30 people. We have yet to receive an official statement from the Avengers. More details tonight only on Channel 6 News at 8." You listened with intent and your heartbeat was beating fast. Those poor victims. Is the team on their way home? Are they okay? How is Wanda doing? Your mind formed a million questions.
"FRIDAY, call Steve Rogers." a faint ding let you know that your request is being done.
"Y/n." Oh, thank god he's okay.
"Steve! Are you guys alright? I saw what happened. I am so sorry."
"We're alright. Search and rescue was already on the scene when we left."
"How's Wanda? Do you need me to do anything?"
"Physically, she's safe, y/n. Emotionally? This is gonna take a toll on her."
"What about the others? Nat? Sam? You?"
"We're gonna be fine. We're on our way home."
You met the team on the law of the compound. They were visibly stunned and you cut through them to hug Wanda. She was your best friend and you know that this was going to affect her greatly. You were right. She locked herself in her room and the only thing you heard was the sound of the news and sobbing.
In his office, Steve kept replaying what had happened in Lagos. Knowing him, he was gonna blame himself for this. You wanted to leave him be but your concern for Wanda kept you standing by his doorway.
"Steve? You got a moment?"
"Y/n. Do you need anything?" he said as he paused the video on his computer.
"No. I just wanna say I'm sorry about Lagos. Sam and Nat told me what happened."
"It's not your fault, y/n. It's mine. Rumlow mentioned Bucky and all sense of the mission disappeared in my head."
"Don't blame yourself. Bucky was or is, your best friend and he's still missing. You have a right to have emotions."
"Thanks. I... uh...  I needed that. Have you talked to Wanda yet?"
"No. Her room is locked. Maybe you should try talking to her. Both of us saw you as a mentor. She'll listen to you."
You gave him a faint smile and headed for the kitchen. Maybe some food could help them. You moved the vase of sunflowers from your room to the middle of the large dining table.
Tony walked in and asked everyone to meet in the conference room. He got the news as he was coming home from Massachusetts. After a brief interaction with a grieving mother and the news of the mission, he knew what he had to do.
Inside, you were met by General Ross and his assistant. Rhodey was already inside and the rest of the team followed suit. Wanda had stopped crying but you knew she would never get over this.
The general discussed the Sokovia Accords with the team. As much as you'd like to be on Steve's side, you knew the team needs to be put in check. One more incident like this and the world might lose their trust in you. You agreed with Tony. Rhodey and Sam were discussing, or perhaps fighting would be a better word, over the Accords. Tony just sat there looking like a rebellious teen listening to his parents' lectures.
To prove a point, Tony showed the team a picture of Charlie Spencer. He died in Sokovia after Ultron planned to drive the human race into extinction. You felt your heart drop. He just wanted to do some good and he was caught in the crossfire.
At that point, the fighting and bantering was too much and you just zoned everyone out. You wanted to cry and you knew that the team was slowly drifting apart. Steve walked out after receiving a text. You didn't ask why. He has a private life after all.
You decided to take your frustrations out on the punching bags. You finally had a home. A family. But you feel the world caving in around you. With one last punch, the punching bag came flying through the room engulfed in flames. You fell to your knees as tears clouded your vision. Dum-E, who Tony programmed to follow you around with a fire extinguisher as a joke, finally put his programming to use.
"Y/n." a familiar voice called to you
"Nat. Hey." you struggled through the tears.
"Talk to me."
"I- I just want the team to stay together. You guys are the only family I have."
"Me too, y/n. I used to have nothing till I found this family."
"I want to help. What can I do to help?"
"I'm off to Vienna for the signing of the Accords. I'm meeting Steve on the way to try and change his mind. Maybe you can help."
"I'll try."
Nat took you to a cathedral. Steve was on the other end by himself. He looks... tired. On the altar was a picture of Agent Carter.
"Oh. That's why he left."
"Hi, Steve. I just wanna say I am so sorry for your loss," you said as you walked towards him.
"Nat. Y/n. What are you doing here?"
"We didn't want you to be alone and I'm also taking y/n with me to Vienna for the signing of the Accords."
"There's plenty of room on the jet," you said
"Who else signed?"
"Tony, Rhodey, Vision."
"Wanda?"
"TBA."
"Clint?"
"He said he's retired."
"There's still time to change your mind, Steve. Come with us to Vienna." you pleaded one last time
"You know why I can't do this y/n. If I sign, we're surrendering our freedom to people with agendas different from ours."
You felt a lump in your throat. "I'll be in the car." You said to Nat as you turned around not looking at Steve once as you walked out of the church.
"She hates me now, doesn't she?"
"No, she doesn't. She's just scared."
Nat was right. As always. You got in the car and tried to meditate. You didn't want to cry. Not when cameras surrounded you. You tried to steady your breathing but your brain seemed to do the exact opposite.
~~~Flashback~~~
"Injecting serum in five seconds." an emotionless voice said. You tried to break free but you were strapped down to the table. Even if you weren't, it was like you were trapped in your own mind. You couldn't move. The next few hours were a blur to you. The only thing you remember was the excruciating pain coursing through your veins.
"Serum successfully administered."
"Good. Take her to the cell for the remainder of the process."
You woke up in a pool of sweat inside a dark room. Alone. Like you have been since you were a kid. You don't remember much of it. Sometimes you see your parents in your dreams. You were 5 years old and they took you to the park. Your mom was helping you get to the other end of the monkey bars while your dad went to get snow cones. You were happy. But that memory was soon followed by the sound of gunshots and screaming. You couldn't understand what was said but you didn't need to be a genius to know it was full of anger. Your mom told you to hide and you did. But they found you anyway. Since then, you were subjected to vigorous training. You now know 30 languages and deadly fighting skills. You became a weapon and today was the final step of your transformation. Eleven years of training and they deemed you ready. After they reprogrammed your brain to be obedient, of course.
The man in the army uniform handed you a folder. "Your first mission, soldatin," he said, "Procure the obelisk. No survivors. No witnesses. You have 48 hours. Report back here as soon as it is finished." You nodded and opened the folder. It was of a tiny village at the base of the Swiss Alps. In the middle of it was the said obelisk encased in glass. You took a handful of soldiers with you and you headed for the village.
You succeeded in your mission. The obelisk was safely placed inside a containment unit in the jet. The village was burned to the ground. Bodies were piled on the streets and the only sign of life was your team and a handful of livestock the villagers kept. With that, you headed back.
"Very good, soldatin. Go with the doctor." and like the good soldier that you were, you walked behind the man in the lab coat.
You passed by a few offices on your way to the medical wing. Amongst other things, the serum enhanced your hearing. The faintest whispers sounded like normal talking.
"You heard about the mission?"
"Yeah. I heard y/l/n didn't even show mercy for those villagers." the voice chuckled.
"Bettenhauser's gonna be pleased." said another.
"I bet. He and y/f/l/n worked together on the program and seeing it do its purpose mus be so satisfying"
"Her father was an asset for us. That was before he betrayed us, though."
"Well, we got her now. She is an even bigger asset than her father ever was."
You kept walking and you ended up in a room with four other people in coats. In the middle of a room was a large glass case with a chair.
"Step inside the chamber, soldatin. You need to rest." and just like that, your feet dragged you inside. One of the coats placed a mask on you amongst other things. You felt your eyelids getting heavier and heavier and heavier. Gone.
The glass chamber now safely enclosed your unconscious body. Your body was now as cold as ice.
~~~End of flashback~~~
Since that first mission, you had killed hundreds of people for HYDRA. Innocent people. They haunt your dreams to this day but what's done is done. All you could do is help as many as you can.
You were taken out of your trance by the sound of the car door closing. Nat now sat beside you.
"Eagle Hangar please," she said to the driver
The drive to the hangar was silent. So was the flight to Vienna.
"Here goes nothing," you said to Nat as the elevator doors opened. World leaders were gathered in the room and cameras were flashing everywhere. A lady with a clipboard checked you in and quickly walked away.
"I see you are not fans of the spotlight." said the man in the suit. You later learned his name was T'Challa. Prince of Wakanda.
"It isn't very flattering," Nat said to him.
"Well, considering your last trip to Capitol Hill, you seem to be doing great so far." you chuckled at his response. You read about that months ago. You even saw it on YouTube on "Black Widow most iconic moments compilation.
"You don't seem like a big fan as well." You told him
"The accords, yes. The politics? not very. Two men in the same room can get more done than a hundred."
"Unless you need to move a piano." the voice behind you said
"King T'Chaka. This is Y/n Y/l/n. Allow us to apologize for what happened in Nigeria."
"Thank you, Ms. Romanoff. I'm sad to hear Captain Rogers won't be joining us."
"That makes three of us." You replied to him.
Just then, you heard a voice come on through the speakers asking everyone to take a seat. King T'Chaka was giving a statement when both yours and Nat's attention was drawn to his son who was looking out the window.
"EVERYBODY GET DOWN!" He screamed as he bolted for his father.
Like instinct, you threw yourself in front of Nat. It's something that you started doing after you joined the team. You thought after all the lives you've taken, protecting as many as you can could "wipe the red off your ledger" as Nat put it. You were a very effective human shield as a result of the serums. You weren't immortal nor did you have instantaneous healing due to the reaction between the two serums but you still healed faster compared to average humans. You felt a spray of glass cut through your skin and a searing heat touched your skin. Search and rescue came after the explosion and took you and Nat to get medical attention. You were perfectly fine but Nat had a few cuts and bruises. In typical Nat fashion, she walked it off like it was nothing.
You were taken to a tent to get a fresh set of clothes while Nat talked to Prince T'Challa, now king under horrible circumstances. When you got out, he was gone and she was on the phone.
A few minutes later, your phone rang.
Captain Grandpa calling...
you dropped the call and went to check on NAt
~~~BUCHAREST~~~
News outlets revealed Sargeant Barnes, Bucky, was behind the bombing. You knew Steve was gonna go after him. He'd been looking for Bucky since SHIELD fell. Now, he found him in Romania. Orders were given to shoot him on sight and Steve wouldn't let that happen.
~~~BERLIN~~~
Bucky was now in custody.
"What part of don't make things worse didn't you understand?" you asked Steve
You were in one of the offices watching Bucky getting evaluated by the doctor. You were in the other room talking to Tony about what would happen to your teammates.
"We're lucky they aren't in jail," he said
This was all too much. You went to the bathroom to splash some water on your face. You hadn't slept in 24 hours nor eaten anything. You looked in the mirror and fixed your hair as best you could.
BLACKOUT.
What was happening? You ran out and saw a lot of commotion.
"Get me eyes on Barnes," yelled Everett Ross.
You saw Nat and Tony walking towards the exit.
"What happened? What can I do?" you asked
"Don't know. We need to find Barnes." Tony said
"Please tell me you brought a suit," said Nat
"Sure did. It's a lovely Tom Ford three-piece two-button. I'm on active duty non-combatant."
Just as he said that Agent Carter, the younger, ran past you "follow me," she said. The three of you did and she led you to the facility's lobby.
You had never met Sgt. Barnes but from what Steve told you, he was a good man. The person you saw in the lobby was not him. He reminded you of your time at HYDRA. Cold and merciless. A soldier.
Sharon and Nat ran in and tried to fight him to no avail. You managed to get him down but he pinned you n the floor. He was trying to choke you and as a last effort to break free, you took a deep breath and exhaled a stream of fire. He dodged out of the way and you managed to get up. The next thing you saw was T'Challa going after him. You set fire to the staircase to slow him down but he still got away
You went outside only to see Steve on the rooftop pulling a helicopter from the sky. Sometimes you forget that he's a super-soldier just like you.
"Y/n coordinate evac. Get civilians as far away as you can," said Tony through comms. You wanted to help Steve but you got your orders.
~~~Fast forward to Berlin~~~
You did what Tony said and got civilians to a safe distance. When you went to meet with Nat and Tony, they told you Steve and Bucky were gone. They assumed Sam was with them too.
~~~Steve's POV~~~
"This would've been a lot easier a week ago," said Sam
"If we call Tony or maybe y/n--" he cut you off
"Who knows if the accords will let them help." he had a point. After everything that's happened, the UN would not listen to them even if they found out about Zemo.
"We're on our own."
"Maybe not." you looked at him questioningly. "I know a guy"
~~~End of POV~~~
You were now back in a conference room with General Ross. He gave you 36 hours to bring the three men in. He wouldn't hesitate to kill Steve if it meant bringing Barnes in.
"My left arm is numb. Is that normal?" he asked. Nat put her hand on his shoulder.
"You alright?" she asked
"Always." you knew that was a lie. Numbness in the left arm was a sign of a heart attack. But he's Tony. he could be bleeding to death and still say witty sarcastic remarks. You wish he didn't do that. You wished he'd open up to you more. "36 hours. Geez."
"We're seriously understaffed," said Nat. It was just the three of you there now.
"Would be great if we had a hulk right about now. Any shot?" Nat shook her head
Not even the Hulk. It would be nice if just Bruce and Thor were there. Maybe things wouldn't be as bad. Bruce and Thor would've deescalated matters before you could say Mjolnir.
"You really think he would be on our side?" she asked. You hadn't thought of that but knowing Bruce, he would want the team to be together.
"I have an idea." Said Nat
"ME too. Where's yours?
"Downstairs. Where's yours?" said tony.
~~~QUEENS~~~
"Spiderman? really?" you asked Tony in the car.
"HE stopped a 3000 lbs car going 40 miles an hour wit his bare hands and he swings from webs."
"But he's dressed in a red hoodie and swim goggles." you chuckled. It was probably the lightest moment you had in the last week alone.
You and Tony knocked on the apartment door. It was answered by a middle-aged woman. She was beautiful honestly. She had those kind motherly eyes that reminded you of your mom.
"Hi. I'm Tony Stark. This is y/n y/l/n. Is Mr. Parker here? we have some good news for him." Tony sad
"I'm May., his aunt and no he's not here. He should be home soon though. You're welcome to wait." she invited you in and served you some walnut and date bread. It was horrible but you didn't have the heart to tell her. she was so nice.
"So what is this good news you're here about?" she asked. Tony didn't actually tell you what his plan was. Not in full anyways so you were just as curious as her.
"Oh its a grant from the September foundation that he applied for. I approved." as far as bullshit made-on-the-spot excuses go, that was pretty good.
"Oh, he never told me that.
"He probably wanted to surprise you," you said to her
"Probably. Are you also a receiver of the grant?" she asked
"No. I'm interested in how the foundation is run so I asked to be here" she nodded. You didn't think she'd buy it but she did. Just as he said that the front door opens and a young guy walked in. He couldn't have been much younger than you. He had his earphones n and he was going on about this nice car parked outside. Tony's of course.
He saw the three of you on the sofa and he was clearly starstruck upon seeing Tony. He couldn't even speak without stuttering. He repeated his excuse to Peter and he surprisingly went along with it. Tony asked for five minutes alone with him and you were left in the living room with Aunt May. When they got out of the room, Peter informed his aunt that Tony invited him to the compound to talk more about the internship. You knew it was a lie of course because just a few hours later, Peter was standing next to you on the car to the airport.
~~~BERLIN~~~
Vision informed you that Clint came to get Wanda at the compound. Immediately, you knew this wasn't gonna end well. You don't want to fight her but you don't have a choice
As a last effort, you tried calling Steve but hews just declining your calls. Eventually, none of them would even go through.
~~~Fast forward~~~
"Steve, you know what's about to happen. Do you really want to punch your way out of this one?" Nat said.
"Just come with us. Please," you pleaded. He looked at the both of you
"Alright, I've run out of patience. Underoos!" yelled tony. just as he did, Peter grabbed Steve's should and landed on top of  the helicopter
"Nice job kid"
"Thanks. I could've stuck the landing a little better. It's just the new suit but it's perfect, Mr. Stark" he went on this babbling for about 45 seconds. You thought it was funny.
~~~
"I'm trying to keep you from tearing the Avengers apart," Tony said. You wanted the same thing. You all do.
"You did that when you signed," said Steve
"You're gonna turn Barnes over and you're gonna come with us now because it's us" You could hear the sadness and frustration in Tony's voice. "Come on" he whispered
You heard Sam's voice through Steve's earpiece "We found it. The quintet is in hangar five. North runway." you let out a deep breath. This was it. Steve raised his arm as Redwing cut through his restraints.
"Alright Lang," said Steve
"What the hell was that?" asked Rhodes
"I believe this is yours, Captain America"
"Oh great. There's two on the parking deck. One of them is Maximoff. I'm gonna go grab her. Y/n come with me. Rhodey, wanna take Cap?" said Tony as he grabbed you by the arm and flew towards Wanda... and Clint?
"There's two on the terminal. Wilson and Barnes"
"Barnes is mine," said T'Challa
~~~Fast Forward~~~
"Wanda. I think you hurt Vision's feelings"
"You locked me in my room."
"I did it to protect you."
"Wanda, stop this now. I don't want to fight you but you know I will."
"I can't live in fear anymore, y/n." and with that, she used her powers to drop cars at you.
"I'm done playing nice. You want a fight? I'll give you a fight." you said as you aimed fireblasts at her and Clint.
A fight has now ensued between the two teams. Tony attached a miniaturized jet pack to your back so you could chase after the others. Steve and the others were making a run for the hangar when Vision used his laser to stop them in their tracks. You landed in front of them, skin now glowing red from the fire inside you. The others followed suit.
"You must surrender now." Vision's voice thundered over you despite being in an open space. You were now face to face with your friends.
"What do we do, Cap?" asked Sam
"We fight."
"This isn't gonna end well," whispered Nat
"They're not stopping," said Peter
"Neither are we."
Pepper is raising Morgan with the help of the remaining team and me her step son.
Valkyrie is the new queen of New Asgard.
And I've become the new Iron Man of New York.
To say it simply, everyone is still broken inside. No matter how much times passes we will never forget everything that's happened.
These events didn't happen in that order but it's what I was told when I had return back to New York. I was only seventeen years old when the world when in chaos. Now as I return i'm a twenty one year old who's found out about his father's death and the marriage with his new wife who had given me a little sister.
Dad wanted me out of the country and didn't want my life to be in danger for been Tony Stark's son. So I study abroad in Australia until I graduated from high school and somewhat graduated from college. When the snap happened I was given orders to stay put and not come back. So Happy flew to me in Australia to keep me company and out of trouble even though I wasn't a trouble maker. But, dad still wanted me to be safe. So when I found out about dad and Pepper having Morgan I was too busy to meet her. Over the course of five years, I was away in Australia trying to live a normal life again. It wasn't easy seen so many people disappear and turn into dust. Half of Australia was gone and things weren't how it used to be. I didn't even know either about my own dad been lost in space for weeks. I had to push through college with the rest of the college kids to continue our studies the best we all could do.
I continued to keep in contact with dad and Pepper but never got a chance to meet Morgan in face only through pictures. But one day Pepper informed me about how dad and what had been left of the team were going to bring everyone back using time travel and that I had nothing to worried about. That same day when I got the call from Pepper it was early morning here when people had suddenly begun to reappear. From that moment on I had known everything must have been fine. But, deep inside me a sudden feeling of sadness suddenly hit me. While everyone was happy to be reunited again I was inside my house crying.
"You're father is dead." I could still hear those words echo inside my head to this day. Pepper had called Happy that morning when the fight against Thanos took place back in their compound. While everyone around me celebrated the coming back of their love ones. I had lost the person I most cared about. I couldn't be happy for anyone at least not at that moment.
A few hours later here I am now standing in front of the cabinet in the middle of the woods wearing a black suit. I had wore my dad's watch and upgraded thanks to Happy's help. It was the one that armed one of his first suits but into a more modern kind. I also wore a pair of old black glasses that dad had given me when I left for Australia. I took a deep breath before I continued to make my way towards the cabinet to see everyone from the team and others were standing there watching as Pepper and Morgan with Steve walked towards the pond carrying the arc reactor Pepper gave my dad.
In that instant, the only thing I wanted to do was yell and scream at the top of my lungs. But instead, I stood all the way in the back of the cabinet listening to the funeral and ceremony. Happy had gone with Pepper and Morgan to drop off the arc reactor on top of a big flower crown. I stood on the side with my back on the wall with arms crossed and head low.
"Come on, [Male Name] you have to eat your vegetables." I was five years old at the moment. Dad was alone in the Stark Tower and it was dinner time. But I didn't want to eat the vegetables on my plate. I frowned shaking my head and crossing my small arms.
"No, I hate vegetables! They taste bad! I want candy and donuts! My friends eat that every day so I want that too!" I yelled.
Dad was not having it that day. He had been up all night the day before fixing his suits and was not happy about dealing with a screaming five year old. "Come on, squirt eat the vegetables they are good for you." He tried feeding me with his finger.
"No daddy, I don't want to turn green like the hulk. Thor told me I will turn green from eating too many broccolis." I yelled in tears taking off running away from him.
"Dammit Thor.. [Male Reader] come back! You won't turn green if you eat them!" That night I couldn't stop crying. It was silly but at the age of five you tend to believe everything adults tell you. So the only way I stopped crying was when he brought me some donuts with chocolate milk to eat for dinner.
The next day when Thor was in the tower my dad had been rough on him even got yank by the ear and had made him apologize to me. "I'm so sorry young [Male Name] I should have never told you such lies. In fact, if you eat all of your vegetables everyday you will grow up to become strong and handsome like me." I giggled hugging him and dad.
"I want to become like you and daddy!" From that day forward I always ate my vegetables but as I grew up. I knew that I was never going to become like them. But even so, I enjoyed eating them.
 Listening to my father's memorial continued to bring more and more memories. All the moments we both shared together from the fights we had because of his work and health. There was this one time when Pepper had to bring him home drunk from one of his party's. I was about ten years old the first time I had talked back to him.
It was way before my dad realized he loved my father and began to date. I still remember clearly when it happened. The day of the party was during a school night. He had promised me early in the morning before school about spending the day together before his party. But dad didn't keep his promise instead he sent Happy for me that day to school. "Dad, can we go eat a cheeseburger after school. They have new fries that are coming out today. Can we please go!" I beg him hugging his leg.
Dad played with my hair picking me up. "Of course squirt, now come on you can't be late for school." Dad hurried me into the car. But before I got inside I took out my pinky looking straight at him. "Dad promise me you will take me after school." I said seriously.
Dad bends down to my height intertwining his pinky with mine. "I promise squirt." The whole day in school I couldn't stop thinking of spending the afternoon with him. I was in such a good mood that day that, I didn't mind getting a big project that day.
But, boy was I wrong. That afternoon when Happy had picked me up from school. I was upset and angry at them both because Happy did not want to take me to eat a burger that day. So I didn't get to try the new fries with a cheeseburger that day. Happy said dad was in a meeting all day and wasn't coming home till night time because of the party he was having that night. I had to spend the whole day with Happy. Whenever I would stay with him it was always fun but that day I wasn't in the mood for anything. It wasn't until around eight at night when Steve had picked me up from Happy's.
"Goodnight [Male Name]." I turn around not wanting to see his face anymore and buried my face in Steve's shoulder. Steve patted my back and carried my backpack and jacket. "Goodnight Happy come on, let's get going." I got inside Steve's car and road all the way home in silence except for the radio that was playing old music.
On the way home I decided to break the silence." Steve, why do you listen to music from the old days?" I asked sitting in the back seat looking out the window.
"Well.... because I was born back in the old day but got frozen for many years. So this music reminds me of the good old days I once used to live."
"I see..... Steve if you had a son about my age would you break a pinky promise and disappoint your only son?" I asked looking at him.
Steve got taken back by the sudden question taking a few seconds to respond back. "Of course, I wouldn't sport if I had a son your age I would never break a promise especially a pinky promise. Those are extremely important and must not be broken. But you have to understand that your dad is Iron Man so he has a big responsibility with the community and needs to attend events. But that doesn't mean he does not care about you [Male Reader]."
I frowned in silence thinking about what he had just said. After we arrived at the Tower that night Steve helped me changed into my pajamas and checked my teeth for cavities. Steve had tucked me in bed and read me a bedtime story so I could fall asleep while dad was gone. He even stook around a few minutes until I fell asleep which unfortunately lasted only about three hours. It was around past midnight when I heard sounds coming from downstairs.
"JARVIS who's downstairs," I whispered half asleep to him.
"It appears to be Mr. Stark and Miss Potts who have arrived at the Tower. Would you like me to inform them about you waking up?"
I shook my head. "No, don't tell them anything." I yawned laying back to sleep but the bit of anger I still had kept me awake. Hearing noises still coming from downstairs I decided to confront my dad about today.
I got up from my bed running towards my bedroom door and quietly closed the door behind me and ran quietly through the hallways until I reached the elevator. Once the elevators door opened I went inside and pressed the button for downstairs and patiently waited. As the doors open my dad and Pepper appear before my eyes. Both were wearing fancy clothing. But as I took a look at my dad I could tell he was very drunk. I could smell the odor from all the alcohol he's drank all night.
"Is this the example you give me?" I yelled at him. He was caught off guard smiling big when he saw me walking towards their direction. Dad walked over to me embracing me into a hug. I quickly escaped from been hug and ran behind Pepper. "Hey, bud what you doing up so late huh? Where you waiting for me all night to get home." He said.
I continued to his behind Pepper. "Of course not dad, i'm angry at you because you didn't pick me up from school. You broke your pinky promise!" I said pointing a finger at him.
"Don't be so harsh on me [Male Name] you are hurting my feelings.... I know tomorrow I will buy you anything you want. How does that sound? Better yet, no school for you tomorrow."
"Tony! You can't do that what kind of example are you giving him. Please, don't listen to anything of this tomorrow I will take you to the burger place we can both go together."
"Thank you, Pepper you are the best. Dad, I hate you! I don't want to live with you anymore!" I yelled running towards the elevator. Dad called my name but I didn't want to hear anything from him. That night I had sneaked into Natasha's room to sleep in. I quietly opened her room and snuggled with her in the giant bed she had. The next morning she was surprised to see me fall asleep in her bed.
Nat didn't question why I had barged into her room until the next morning. I had explained everything that happened and how I didn't want to sleep alone in my room by myself. She was so kind that Nat helped me get ready for school and was going to talk to my dad about the argument from last night.
In the morning after getting ready Pepper had arrived early to take me to school because I didn't want to see Happy either. "Behave good in school I will be here waiting for you to pick you up so we can go eat together."
I hugged her feeling better. "Okay, I promise to come out super fast so we can go eat and play all day." I ran away from her waving goodbye as I walked inside the school. Later that day, when I came out of school I didn't see Pepper anywhere. I looked everywhere in the school entrance but she wasn't here. Until, a few minutes later when dad came to the front gate running towards me. I was feeling confused about why he was picking me up instead of Pepper like she promise she would.
"Why are you here? Where's Pepper she promise she would pick me up." I half yell feeling angry again.
"Pepper's here squirt she's waiting in the car with Happy. I came with her so we can both take you to eat burgers." He said ruffling my hair. I removed his hand from my head frowning.
"I don't want to go anymore, I want to go home." I turned around facing him with my back and arms crossed feeling angry.
Dad didn't say anything but instead carried me on his back taking off running to the car. He hadn't carried me like this since I was five years old. So all the anger went away and instead giggles came out of my mouth. That day was the happiest day of my life. He spoiled me and bought me everything I wanted including take out food for dinner. And all of the deserts I wanted to eat but it was a bad idea to get everything off the menu. Pepper had lectured him for spoiling me and the big stomach ache I have gotten. But it was all worth it because I had gotten to spend the whole day with the people I love in this world.
I hadn't noticed that the ceremony was done until I felt my pants been tug by a small hand. That's when I realized I had tears running down my face. But, it was barely seen by others because of the black shades I was wearing. I looked down and saw it was Morgan wearing a black dress with her hair down looking up at me. As I looked down my glance had suddenly drifted to the lake but I saw everyone looking my way with sad eyes. Pepper was the first to speed walk my way. I looked down at Morgan and carried her in my arms meeting Pepper halfway. We embraced each other along with Morgan. Pepper looked at me with sad eyes and a small smile. "I'm so sorry you couldn't see him alive again."
"Nonsense, there's no need of apologizing. I was able to talk with him the day of their plan to bring everyone back. He told me there would be a chance that something would happen. So I understood that it was possible something bad would have happened to him and he was right." I said hugging Pepper again. "I promise to take care of you and Morgan." I gave each a kiss and wiped her tears away with my thumb. I hugged both one more time before walking away. But Pepper had given me directions of something dad left me to see.
We stood for a few minutes like that until slowly the team was coming forward one by one giving me their support and apologizes for what happened. As I talked with everyone Morgan went with Happy on the porch. I have to admit been surrounded by the team and new recruits made me feel home. I got to meet the guardians of the galaxy, Doctor Strange, Scott Lang, and his team. I was finally able to meet Peter Parker and his aunt. Furry and Maria where here as well. I was finally able to see Bruce again but turned into the Hulk. I saw the damaged on his arm from using the gauntlet that brought everyone back. I saw Clint and finally met his three children and wife. I also met Bucky and Wanda who had joined the team. The king of Wakanda with his mother and sister were here too. Everyone in the team was shocked at how grown i've looked. The last time they saw me I was sixteen and now that i'm twenty one they were shocked at how much I have changed.
When I met Peter Parker he's reaction was something I was not expecting. The moment I introduced myself to him Peter almost fell down on the ground if it wasn't for his aunt's help. "Are, you alright?" I asked concerned.
Peter nodded. I offered my hand towards him too shake. As we shook hands he couldn't help but stare at me. As if he has seen a ghost or something worse. "Yeah..... yeah, I'm fine it's just.... you look a lot like Mr. Stark."
I half smiled at him. "You think so, my dad told me a lot about you, Peter. I know you spent a lot of time together with my dad... I have to admit I was a bit jealous always hearing about you." Peter frowned confused and guilty. "Wait before you ask anything let me finish what I want to say. I did get jealous of you because all I heard was Peter this, Spiderman that but either way, i'm grateful for everything you did. I know you and I aren't related but now that I have a family to protect. There's a lot of things I need to learn so maybe if you help me train I can help you with making new suits and gadgets. How does that sound? I know that i'm not my father but I don't want all of his efforts to go to waste."
Peter and his aunt both looked at one another then back at me accepting my offer. "Yes! I- I mean of course I accept your offer."
"Great. I'll contact you so wait for my call." I patted his back making way towards the cabinet seen Morgan sitting down next to Happy. I passed by them ruffling her hair before opening the door and shutting it behind me. I took a look around at my surroundings before I seeing my dad's helmet sit in a small table. I finally took the decision of taking off the sunglasses. I walked towards the helmet carrying it in my hands. I took a seat on the couch with both hands wrapped around the helmet.
There was a small button on the back of the helmet. Pepper said to push on it so that the recording of him could play. I took a deep breath before pressing the button and set it back down on the small table. A sudden blue light appeared and so did dad. He was sitting down on a chair before standing up walking in front of me. "Dad." I whispered watching his every move.
[Play the music]
"I know that by now you must be seeing this and probably blaming yourself for what happened to me. But, I should be the one blaming myself for sending you away to the other side of the world. I still remember the day you were born. I was a mess when your mother told me she was pregnant with you. I was also nervous when Pepper told me she was pregnant with Morgan. Becoming a father is easy enough, but being one can be very rough. Fathers provide not only support but also encouragement words to their children. Now, that i'm gone your sister and Peter will need someone to guide them. I know you're only twenty one but and it's a lot to handle but please look after them. You are my son that to my father I could never be. My father didn't tell me how to live, he lived and let me watch him do it. I promise myself never to become the type of father he was.
"Dad you're someone to look up to no matter how tall i've grown. I won't let her forget about you never."Tears began to fall down my cheeks.
"I want you to forgive me for leaving and not being able to be there for you when and if you need me, but I want you to know one thing above all else. I love you so much that I can't describe the feelings that I'm going through." I want you to grow up into a young man and be a success at whatever you attempt to do. The time that I did spend with you was a wonderful and enjoyable time in my life and you helped make it that way. This is very hard for me to say because I kept crying every time I tried to record this, knowing that I will not be here when you are seeing this. The sadness keeps overwhelming me and tears are flowing down my face. I'm so very proud of you and you have shown me just how smart you are all ready. I expect you to grow and be able to use your head to think things out and to be able to ask questions if you don't understand something. I want you to face life and the problems that it gives you a positive outlook because if you think of the bright things in life, it makes the bad things not so bad after all! You are a beautiful and smart boy and I wish you all the luck and good fortune a person could ever want or need. I left you all of my suits and tools in the garage. Use those to protect this city but, more importantly, use them to protect Pepper and your sister."
"I love you 3000."
Dad smiled one last time until the image disappeared. I clenched my hands in disperse the black sunglasses rested in my left hand. I could see my reflection through the black lenses. My eyes were filled with watery eyes puffy and red from all the crying i've done just listening to his message. I looked down at the old watch on my wrist. I stood up from the couch and walked over to the window taking a look outside. I wiped the tears away from eyes and put back on my glasses. Seen everyone still sticking around with sad faces in the cabinet gave me an idea. I smiled for the first time in days looking up at the ceiling nodding to myself. "I know what to do."
After a few minutes of staying in silence, I took the decision of walking outside with them. I quietly opened the door walking out in silence. Happy and Morgan were no longer by the porch. I took a deep breath before making the decision to speak in a loud voice. "I know this is going to sound crazy coming from a twenty one year old who's now old enough to drink." Everyone stopped what they were doing and listened. "But my goal doesn't stop for anyone. Either you support me or I make it happen alone. Either way, it is going to happen. Those were my father's words, and I couldn't help but remember them this very second. The reason why I remember those words is because it was the last thing he told me over the phone. I didn't have a clue on what he meant but now I do." I said looking at everyone. My tone went from friendly to serious. "My father ended his life for the sake of this planet I, won't let his sacrifice be in vain. I thought this through and will keep the promise he asked me to keep. Ladies and gentlemen, you are all looking at the new Iron Man. This planet will never and I say NEVER will have another life be lost. This place will never be invaded by another villain ever. Because as long as i'm around there won't be any more deaths. I'm not only representing my father in his honor, but im also here representing Natasha, Vision, and Loki." I said proudly hugging Pepper and carrying Morgan on my shoulders. I could see the proud faces of Steve, Thor, Clint, Wanda, Rhodey, Bruce, Happy, Furry, and Pepper. I looked over to Peter who watched quietly. "The scared twenty one year you saw earlier today is gone. Whoever wants to join my team and I is welcome to participate. But from now on there won't be any more pain or suffering."
"[Male Reader] your dad would be so proud of you." Steve said sending a nod at me.
"Where ever they are I'm sure they're all proud of you." Wanda said.
"I made a promise to take care of my family. And that includes everyone here I know with their help from up there we will be fine. Now with both of my parents up there together I know for a fact they won't let anything bad happen to me or to everyone close to me." I answered truthfully. I placed Morgan back on the ground handed her my dad's sunglasses and step away far from them. I clicked on the button of the watch activating the black and gold suit of armor I had created back in Australia. It was a replica of my dad's suit he used back in 2015 except with a new model and color. It had both names of my parents carved in with black ink on the back of the helmet. The suit unfolded it's self as I flew a few feet off the ground. I pressed a button on the left corner of the helmet so the helmet could open revealing my face and stared down at everyone from above.
I looked everywhere smirking until my eyes landed on Peter." This is your chance, Peter let's go there's stuff you need to learn." I said rising up to the sky. Peter looked at his aunt. "Can I go, I won't be home late."
His aunt May push the excited fifteen year old. Surprisingly Peter was wearing his Spider Man suit under his black suit. Peter took off running my direction revealing his suit and mask. "Be careful Peter, bring him back safe [Male Reader]" Aunt May yelled.
"I will May! Anyone else wants to join us? I have room for more if anyone is up for it. Rhodey, Thor, Guardians of the galaxy, Doctor Strange? I know about your power." I flew further into the sky as Peter swings on his spider webs. I pressed the button again closing the helmet.
This brought smiles to everyone. "You're crazy Stark." Thor yelled.
"Just be careful come back safe you here me." Pepper yelled. "How are you even flying that thing." She asked carrying Morgan in her arms.
"We'll be careful, A Stark never reveals his secrets. Morgan, I'll bring you tons of cheeseburgers for dinner!" I smiled under my helmet waving goodbye to everyone. "Let's go, Parker!"
"I'm right behind you Mr. Stark I mean [Male Name].... you have a nice name sir." As we flew further away from the forest and into the sky I couldn't help but see my father smiling down at us.
"Thanks, Peter but, just call me [Male Name]."
F*ck you endgame. I've given it time but honestly I'll never not be mad about this.
Sometime after Steve goes back to the 40s
...
Peggy: Steve what's your spirit animal?
Steve: *sweating* why?
Peggy: Just for fun ☺️
Steve: *guilty tone* ...ostrich
Peggy: Haha, why??
Steve: *opens up the encyclopedia, turns to ostrich, and points to this picture*
Tumblr media
***
Get it??!
Tumblr media
***
Seriously though, they really expect us to believe that Steve would just sit back and let all of the bad things he knows are going to happen unfold without doing ANYTHING to stop them, knowing full well he's more than able to??! Really?? Steve if-I-see-a-situation-headed-south-I-can't-ignore-it Rogers, would never. Even if he tried, he'd go absolutely stir crazy after just a month of "resting".
It's an alternate timeline! So he doesn't need to worry about closing a time loop because loops are not how time travel works in the mcu. Endgame establishes this many times through out it's runtime. But that's a can of worms I won't dig into in this post.
I understand that he doesn't have to stop every single bad thing from happening but he'd at least help the people he cares about, like Bucky (aka his best friend since childhood and literal soulmate).
His entire trilogy is about saving Bucky ffs. From the beginning, Bucky is Steve's most important relationship whether you ship them or not.
Also, saving Bucky would already eliminate half the problems that were going to happen because he would never have become the winter soldier who helped "shape a century". Not to mention at least a version of Bucky would have a chance at a life without 70 years of trauma. Nobody worthy of mjolnir would ever let somebody they care about suffer like that!
***
Any ways, here's my head canon ramble:
In my head, endgame Steve didn't stay in the 40s. Instead, he retrieves and unfreezes his 40s self and that's the Steve we see dancing with Peggy at the end of the movie.
That at least seems fair, because 40s Steve is the person she had feelings for. Not endgame Steve who is 12 years older so therefore has been through more than his younger self and is a different person as a result.
And who knows, MAYBE after finally going on a few dates they figure out they're not that combatible and later on Peggy ends up marrying the person she married in the original timeline lol. But while that's happening, endgame Steve saves 40s Bucky and brings him home.
Finding out that Bucky survived the fall and suffered even more at the hands of Hydra, 40s Steve is furious. Both at Hydra for hurting Bucky and even more at himself for feeling responsible for that. He mentally kicks himself for not at least going back to get Bucky's body after he watched him fall. His drive to keep fighting until all of Hydra is dead or captured is reignited and he embarks on a mission through SSR/SHIELD to completely eradicate Hydra. With Peggy's help he succeeds. They also eliminate the red room and keep Hydra from infiltrating SHIELD.
After saving 40s Bucky, endgame Steve makes another stop to the 2010s and gets a few things 😉. He returns to his original timeline just a few seconds after he himself was meant to return after returning the stones. He sets his "time turner gps" for him to be sitting on the bench. That's why he appears so suddenly their. After passing the new shield to Sam, he takes Bucky to a private room and peels off his wig and the face tech that Natasha used in Winter Soldier to make herself look old from his face. He let's Bucky know that he really is retiring and where he'll be staying if Bucky wants to find him.
Bucky visits Steve many times. The first few times, they talk casually and joke lightly about how alien it feels to adjust to a new century. Then they talk about the war and their other traumas; about how they are both changed forever because of them. Many tears are shed as they revisit these painful memories but they help each other through the pain and heal together.
Finally they talk about the old days before the war, about how happy they made each other. It seems like everything since then has changed except their bond. It's still the only thing that makes them feel safe in a way that feels like home. They knew from the moment that bond was made back in their youth, it was unbreakable. So, they stay together, until the end of the line, like they swore they would.
I also have the image of young retired Steve secretly helping with future missions from the sideline 😁.
***
I'll say this a million times. Endgame Steve deserves a happy ending. He deserves to settle down, live a peaceful life. He's been fighting for so long that perhaps he has forgotten who he is without a fight. Losing his family/home (Bucky) probably played a huge part in that.
We all have our battles to fight whether they're on a literal battlefield or in society, but family helps to keep us anchored during tough times.
Steve had to watch his family die, twice.
Steve retiring in his present (the 21st century) where he doesn't know what the future holds, is much better than him running away to the past and burying his head in the f*cking sand to all the suffering he knows is going to happen to the people he loves. Again, nobody worthy of mjolnir would take the second option.
***
I know that endgame was forever ago but I have a fix it fix coming soon!
Pairings: Bucky Barnes x Reader, past!Natasha Romanoff x Reader, past!Steve Rogers x Bucky Barnes, Wanda Maximoff x Sam Wilson
Summary: It's time for you and Bucky tell Sam and Wanda about your decision. Also you need to talk to Nick Fury and talk things out, hoping for the best.
Author's Note: Sooo, I tried to right a small chapter for the time gap between my first and third chapter. It's a bit awful and lazy, next week week (I'll give a lil spoiler) we'll meet the house and the neighborhood. I wasn't feeling really good to write something more, but hope you like it.
(1)
Tumblr media
It's been 5 days since you accepted Bucky's offer, to start a new life with him. At first you and Bucky where discussing where will you live. You suggested to buy an apartment at Brooklyn, but he rejected the moment the suggestion hit the table. He didn't want to be back to the place where he grew up. He didn't want to return to his past. Didn't want to start his new life based on how he used to live.
"Can we have a house with a big kitchen? Ohh Buck, it'll be really nice to have a huuuge kitchen and try so many recipes freely, with so much space to work on." You said dreamily while standing on your elbows to watch Bucky. He turned his gaze from the ceiling to you with a smile in his face.
You were in his room daydreaming about your future life. You're laying next to him being excited about your plans. He laughed and pulled you out of your thoughts. "What? Why are you laughing?" You smiled at him.
"I'm just thinking that if Sam watched us cook with aprons. We wouldn't hear the end of it." He laughed.
"Oh my god, you're soooo right. He'll tease us 'till the day we die." You both laughed again and you suddenly stopped and gasped.
"OH MY GOD, SAM!"
"What about him?" He questioned, confusion covering his face.
"We need to tell him that we want to leave." His smile left his face and his eyes dropped to his hands. Even though the two boys were always fighting, they were the closest and best friends. Bucky didn't know how Sam would take it.
"We need to talk to him." He finally said.
"What? Like, right now?"
"No I think he is already asleep. Tomorrow morning. The sooner the better!"
"Yeah, yeah, you're right." you sighed and curled to his side.
"He won't be very happy, will he?" You both returned your gaze to the ceiling a worried look on both of your faces.
"I don't know, doll. I don't know."
~~~~
The next morning you knocked on Bucky's door, still worry over your features. He opened slowly having the same emotions as you. "Ready?"
He softly sighed "as ready as I can be."
"We have to, Buck." You took his hand on yours and pulled him out of his room.
"I know, I know." He sighed again and you started walking towards the living room.
"Sam!" You shouted and he popped his head from the couch.
"Hello Cinnamon, hello Tinman. What's up?" You giggle at your nickname while Bucky glared at him. Sam liked to call you Cinnamon because you putted cinnamon everywhere, from aromatic candles to coffee dressing.
"We um...wanted to talk to you about something." You said hesitantly.
"Of course, what is it about?"
You moved further and sat down next to him and Bucky sat behind you, staying close to you. "Me and Bucky were thinking umm...we were umm...thinking..." You nervously said playing with your fingers not wanting to look into his eyes.
"Guys. You are worrying me, what's wrong." Sam said worry all over his face.
"No, no nothing is wrong...we just kinda thinking..." Bucky trailed off and then you took over.
"Me and Bucky were thinking about to retire and live a normal life." you stated with one breath closing your eyes and opening them to see a bit confused Sam.
"What do you mean?".
"Sam, we won't lie to you, we're both really tired of this Avenging life. And after our losses we are falling apart more and more. We appreciate all your and Wanda's help, but unfortunately is not enough. We are trying really hard to recover. But all this fighting is keeping us behind. Reminds us -and most certainly me- of the past. We can't keep living like this. We LOVE working with everyone here but it's not doing us any good. We would really, REALLY, appreciate it if you at least consider our retirement and talk things out with Fury."
You were staned by Bucky's words. You didn't expect him to take control of the conversation. And it was a really happy surprise.
"Wow, Buck. I forgot you could talk so much" Sam laughed. "Guys, I understand that your mental health is not stable and of course I noticed your struggle at your latest missions. I'll admit I was thinking to tell Fury give you some days off and retirement hit me like a truck." You both looked at his smiley face, when he turned his gaze behind you and you saw Wanda, who was coming slowly and was smiling too.
"I told Sam that you two needed some time off. But if you feel more comfortable with retirement we are both going to support you." she said while sitting next to Sam grabbing his hand into hers. "Also, let me tell you, I'm gonna help to convince Fury to give you what you want." She smirked, that knowing smirk which said yes, I'm going to manipulate him for you.
You were nearly in tears. You didn't believe that they accepted your decision so quickly and without hesitation. "You guys, you don't know how much this means to us." you teared up, standing to hug them both.
"Thank you so much. Both of you." Bucky said softly trying to keep himself from crying.
You pulled away and looked into their eyes. "When are we going go talk to Fury?"
"How about tomorrow?" Wanda questioned.
"Ok, tomorow then." Bucky said.
"Shall we go make some dinner? I'm starving!" Sam whined and you all laughed.
"Let's go" Wanda laughed and dragged you all to the kitchen.
After two burned steaks, 1 burned apple pie and somehow a burned salad from the boys, who wanted to show off to you, you and Wanda took over.
The dinner was so peaceful. So beautiful. They were your family and you really loved them. So much.
"Oh, guys, have you decided were are you going to live?" Wanda asked at some point.
"Y/N told me about her grand-grand mother's mansion in Magnolia Springs. She said that it's very big for two people, but it'll be big enough to build spare rooms and rooms for us to spend our time. I haven't saw it yet, but I trust her."
"Wait. Did you just say 'build'?" Sam said confused.
"Yeah well I thought it'll be nice to create a home with our hands." You answered.
"It sounds really sweet, but what about the money?" Wanda asked.
"Stark left to much money, for us to use. So we think its the best way to use them." Bucky said.
"Yeah, Tony left a lot money to everyone and I still don't know why." You giggled.
"He's dead and he still makes us happy."
You all smiled at that and fell into silence. Memories from Tony making you all smile. Bucky smiled on the stories you all said about him. His smile fell from his face. He wanted to say he is sorry. For his parents for the mess he created between Tony and Steve. Oh, how much he wanted to apologize.
"Um, I'm finished does anyone want desert?" Bucky asked after a while. You all raised your heads and looked at him.
"Yeah, I do. I'm coming to help you." Sam said and they both left for the kitchen.
"Are you sure?" Wanda asked a minute after the guys left.
"For our decision?"
"Yeah."
"Yeah, yes I am. Bucky is an amazing guy and he is in the same boat with me. If we start over together it will be just a little bit easier."
"But sharing a home is a lot more than a start over, you know that."
"Wand me and Bucky are friends and we can do this. This will just be an adventure for us. We'll have fun, building our own house. Living a new life. Sure it'll be sometimes a little difficult, but we'll do this."
"I'm happy for both of you. I believe in you. And me and Sam will help you with what ever you need." She reached for your hand and held it.
"Thank you Wanda."You smiled at her. A smile which turned onto a smirk after a moment "oh and since you mentioned it. What's going on with you and Sammy?"
She left your hand and blushed like crazy. "Nothing, we're just friends"
"Yeah, yeah I believed you now Wands" you laughed.
"Shut up" A crimson color took over her cheeks and you laughed again.
-Meanwhile in the kitchen-
"Bucky, are you sure you wanna do this?"
"Yes, Sam, I'm 100% sure." Bucky sighed, cutting a big slice of cake for you.
"I mean you two don't know each other so long, to start a life together." Sam said with a concern voice. Bucky dropped slowly the knife and his head. But he immediately looked at him again.
"Sam, I trust her. She's been there for me in ways I couldn't even imagine. She never gives me an apologetic smile or looks at me with pity eyes. She is comforting in her own way, and she helps me when I need it even when I don't ask. I don't say that you or Wanda don't help me, it's just...she is...She's different and I like it. She makes me feel good."
"If she makes you happy, of course I won't get in the way. I just want to make sure that you're ok with that decision. I want the best for you bud." Sam admitted softly patting Bucky's shoulder. Bucky turned and hugged him tightly, not letting Sam breath for a bit.
"Ok, ok I need to breath now please." Bucky let him go and they both laughed.
"Ohh, bird brain I didn't ask you before." Bucky smirked without looking at him.
"What's it this time Tinman?" Sam rolled his eyes and said with an annoying voice.
"What's going on with you and Wanda?"
Sam choked on air while Bucky hit his back, still smirking.
"Nothing's happening."
"Yeah, yeah sure bird brain."
"Fuck off, asshat"
"Idiot."
"Let's go the girls are waiting."
They came after a while with four plates of chocolate cake. Your and Wanda's favorite.
"Here you are ladies." Sam excitedly said.
"Thank you boys" you smiled at both of them and continued your lovely night.
The dinner was over and you all were at your rooms waiting for sleep to take you. When a soft knock at your door, caught your attention.
Bucky opened further the door and whispered, "Doll, are you asleep?".
"No Buck, come in." He closed the door behind him and took small steps towards your bed.
"Hey" he waved at you.
"Hi" you chuckled.
"Can I please stay with you tonight?"
"Of course you can Buck." You pushed your covers and he laid beside, pulling up the blanket.
"Doll, am I the only nervous for tomorrow?"
"No, not really. I think I'm a bit nervous too. I mean we are going to tell Nick Fury that his last two super soldiers are going to retire and they're going to live like two farmers but yeah, no I'm not THAT nervous about that." You joked and he let a heartful belly laugh, that made your stomach feel weird, in a really good way.
"Yeah, way so nervous? It's so normal!" He laughed again and you followed.
"Seriously now Buck, Fury won't be happy. I'm slightly afraid that he'll refuse to retire us."
"Honestly, doll? I don't know what will happen tomorrow. Part of me hopes for the best but another part is just pessimistic."
"What will we do if he says no?"
"We'll see." he sighed.
"Ok" you said a lil' disappointed.
You curled closer to him and moved your gaze from the ceiling to his face. He found your eyes and spoke again softly, not wanting to disturb the peaceful silence, "come here, I don't mind." he smiled.
You pressed your body on his and wrapped your hands around him. He hugged you too and put a soft kiss on your head.
God only knew how much you both loved to be on each others embrace.
~~~~
When morning came, the nervousness came along with it. All your mind was thinking about rejection and Fury. You almost cried when the time for the meeting arrived.
Bucky came to your room to take you and went together, sharing some of the anxiety.
Before he opened the door, Bucky hugged you tightly and you hugged him back the same. You breathed and opened the door.
You greeted Fury and moved to sit down, next to each other, not wanting to let go the others side.
"Mr.Wilson informed me about your thoughts and decisions and of course the state of your mental health, and I have to say I'm surprised that you want to do such a thing together."
You looked at each other with a smile at your faces and a giving an actual loving gaze, and turned to Fury again and said and awkward yeah.
"So, where did that came from?" He said and confused you.
"What do you mean, sir?" Bucky said.
"Where that idea came from? How did you think such a thing? What brought you to that decision?"
"We just had a conversation together, after a tough night and we realized we can't do it any more."
"We want a new life. Bucky is really tired fighting and holding a gun on his hands and I'm really tired fighting too. But we don't have a problem helping whenever it's needed."
"We have a lot to discuss." Fury said with a frown.
After 2 hours and a lot convincing Fury agreed. He said that he will first check the house, the neighborhood, the neighbors' past, just to be sure. He said that he'll put Friday and a security system in the whole house. You hadn't disagreed of course. He also said that you'll get paid for whatever job you do for him, you'll still be his employees no matter where you live or what you do.
You didn't really care what jobs he'll give you eventually, you just wanted to live as far from this life as you could.
When you signed the papers, Fury dropped his serious face and said "I'm really proud of both of you" and left.
You turned and looked at Bucky, who just smiled. You smiled back at him and left, to start making plans for your new house.
BUCKY'S P. O. V.
A sigh escaped my lips as my leg furiously bounced against the pavement of the parking lot "she ain't gonna help"
"we gotta give it a try" Steve whispered, ogling at the tall skyscraper's entrance, which was illuminated with fancy lanterns that matched the aesthetic of the building itself. "you never know. Plus-"
"I shouldn't have come." I mumbled with a light distress showing up in my voice "the moment she sees me she'll turn around and leave"
"she won't" my bestfriend answered, determined.
"Steve-"
"If we tell her it's not for you-"
"Still-"
The sound of the not so far building's gate opening, was enough to cut me midsentence. And... there she went.
"can't you just cancel it? Tomorrow I-- no Wanda- gosh, he's tiring. Just tell him... yeah" she made her way to her car, unaware of our presence besides it yet, probably due to the poor lighting.
So much money, and yet the wealthy company couldn't improve the goddamn streetlights of its own parking lot.
"Friday? Geez no-- No. Period. Just-" her walking slowed down the moment she saw us. "you know what? Friday it's okay. Goodnight Wan." even before hanging up, she was already glaring at me. "James."
"Y/n" I replied, just because I didn't know what else I could say.
She inhaled before speaking again. "you got some balls." her eyes flashed briefly to Steve. "what the fuck are you two doing here?"
"we need help" I stated, quieter that I would have liked.
She huffed " 'course you do." relocating her bag. "look for help somewhere else." her eyes digged into mines, throwing daggers at me.
And, God, did it hurt. "told you" I grunted in low voice to Steve, already turning around to leave. "She's not helping."
I felt a grip on my arm, stopping me from stalking away. "Y/n, this is not about him"
"I don't give a single fuck." she hissed, walking to her car to open it. "you promised to stay away from me, and you're not doing a good job"
"it's Natasha" Steve blurted out before she could get in the vehicle.
Y/n froze at the mention of her.
"what 'bout her?" she tried to sound careless and cool, but I noticed the switch in her body language.
"she... Disappeared" the blond man spoke, putting emphasis on the last word.
Y/n frowned, her eyes going from me, to Steve, and back to me. "Go to the police"
"you know we can't" this time it was my turn to answer. "You're the only one who can help us, you know that. If you weren't, I wouldn't be here." I stated solemnly. "I keep my promises, you know that."
There was a moment of silence, in which she glared at me with hate in her eyes that masked the pain, I knew, was there. "actually, no, James. I can't recall a single time when you kept your promise, so I don't." and I knew she meant every word. "you got plenty of friends, go look for their help and leave me the fuck alone."
SHUT!
We stood there while she drove away, and I would have been lying if I said I was shocked she left.
I spared a glance at Steve, who was running his fingers through his hair, visibly distressed. "what te fuck do we do now?"
It was only after Steve spoke, that it dawned on me we had no other option to have a chance of getting Natasha back.
"we gotta look for someone else"
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Old folders displayed everywhere, empty boxes of Chinese food that Sam bought covered the coffee table, and we all needed a shower.
"we should call Tony" Clint spoke distractedly.
"No we shouldn't" Steve rushed to reply while he tidied up some of the papers. "he's retired"
"Natasha dissappeared, Stevie" Clint's reminder didn't exactly help the moral of the group.
Steve sighed, pinching his nose before shaking his head. "Pepper would kill me." after looking at us for a second, he kept speaking in a hesitant tone "I'll call him if plan A fails"
"plan A?" I questioned, raising and eyebrow. "Plan A failed when Natasha dissappeared" I stated.
"well, then when plan B-"
"Y/n was plan B" Sam yawned, slowly sitting up in the tiny couch where he had fallen asleep "which would have worked if you had listened to Bucky" Sam yawned again, right before stirring "taking him with you, when we needed Y/n, was like- the stupidest idea you had in a while."
Steve took a deep breath before letting out a comeback that would probably cause a fight. "who else we got?"
"No one." Clint almost growled more than spoke.
Out of everyone, he was the most affected by far. Natasha and Clint had grown up together, and the fact that we barely could trust our close friends to get her back was exhausting as well as frustrating.
"think I'm just gonna take a shower" Barton informed us in a mumble before leaving his seat to walk out of the room.
"there's someone" Rhodey's voice made all of us redirect our eyes to the door connecting my kitchen to my living room. "Danvers"
Sam shook his head no "We have no way of contacting her"
Rhodey sighed, exhausted, throwing himself in the chair Clint had just left. "I can contact Rambeau. She'll know where Danvers is"
"She ain't gonna help" It was my turn to contribute with some bad news, not that new, of which none of them were aware. "she knows 'bout what happened with Y/n."
Silence was the answer I got.
Rhodes scoffed "Good to know, James." I kept my eyes trained in my hands, not wanting to face anyone in the room. "Really good to know about this tiny detail after- what? A year?"
Another scoff and more silence.
"let me go through it again" Sam rubbed his temples with closed eyes. "Nat dissappeared, we probably have a mole, and the two people we could use help for" I felt his eyes on me "they won't help." no one spoke. "we're fucked."
We all drowned in our thoughts for a while.
Clint, at some point, had come back. Someone told him we had run out of options, which made him leave. He didn't come back, and I figured he probably fell asleep in my room.
Sun was rising, and, in need of a break, I got up. I really could use some air.
In no time I was standing on my ramshackle balcony, leaned over the railing with both my forearms supporting me.
Sam, who had probably came after me, exited and, after installing himself besides me, he spoke "it's not your fault"
"cut the bullshit"
"okay, it is"
"No shit Sherlock"
He sighed "but not entirely, so don't beat--"
"If she dies" I whispered, my gaze lost on the horizon "it's on me. Like- it's actually on me"
"she's not gonna die" Sam dismissed me quicker than he would have liked. "She's smart, and she's only been missing for around a day and a half "
"Listen, no one said it out loud but we gotta consider it." I blurted out, turning around to face my friend. "if they took her, they'll interrogate her. Do you really think she'll give in?"
"I didn't say that"
"then you know she can end up in a ditch"
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "don't say any of this shit in front of Clint"
"I'm not stupid"
He let out a sarcastic chuckle, shaking his head. "yeah, of course you're not." Sam tilted his head slightly towards me without looking. "remind me again why Y/n ditched you."
"Fuck off Wilson." my voice was low, full of anger and frustration and sadness; bottled up emotions that I carried with me since Y/n left.
Bottled up emotions that came to torture me for what I did whenever I heard her name.
We saw a car.
Sam was the first one to point it out.
Not the fact that a car was driving towards a single property in the middle nowhere, hidden with the help of the trees in the woods.
No, Sam was pointing out what car it was.
"it's... Her car?" He sounded incredulous, hesitant, and even suspicious, but I couldn't blame him.
"it is." I confirmed.
And, even though I was sure it was her car, I couldn't believe it until, after parking in front of the house, she climbed off.
She made her way to the porch's stairs. "I'll... Go and tell the others." Sam informed me. "Open the door"
I sighed and slowly made my way downstairs and to the front door just in time to hear the knocks.
I grabbed the knob, but before spinning it, I froze.
I froze because I shouldn't be me opening the door, it shouldn't be me the first person she sees, the first person she made contact with. I shouldn't be me welcoming her, even if it was my home, because I didn't deserve-
"Open the fucking door, James."
And I did, though the movement was way too eager for my liking.
But it was too eager because it was Y/n requesting me to do it, as if she wanted to see me.
I had complied and now we were standing in front of one another. My first thought was to step aside, since I thought she would try to walk past me as soon as possible, but she didn't.
She stood there, looking at me.
"Thought you said no" even though it was quiet, almost a mumble, it was definitely not a great sentence to begin a conversation in such a delicate situation.
Surprisingly, her voice sounded way warmer than I was expecting when she replied to my unfortunate comment. "I made up my mind" thankfully, she kept talking, because I had no idea what to answer. "Nat's my friend too. I'll help."
