Part 1
When you woke up the next morning, it was to a searing pain in your shoulder and your knuckles. It took a few moments for you to realize where you were and a small moment of panic set in as you felt two pairs of arms wrapped around you gently. You tried to brush them off before gasping out in the shoot of severe pain radiating from your shoulder. A gasp that caused Natasha to shoot up from her sleep.
“Detka?” She asked her hands floating above your body as if not wanting to hurt you more but also wanting to help you in anyway she could. “What are you doing? You’re on bedrest from your shoulder injury.”
“I-I-I don’t know…” You muttered looking at the redhead confused. “You… you don’t like me… why am I in your bed?” Your question must have hurt Natasha because the flash of pure anguish in her eyes was noticed.
“Detka… we talked last night… you-you… what is happening?” Natasha asked, a look of pure confusion on her face. “Is this a side effect of your meds?”
Your eyes widened as flashes of last night came to you. “Oh fuck…” You muttered chewing on your lip. “You guys know…”
“We do but like we said last night darling, this doesn’t change how we feel about you. But we still have so much to make up to you for the last few days. We acted disgustingly.” You heard with the lilt of a soft sokovian accent, making you turn your head to face a sleepy looking Wanda. “Darling lay back down and I will go make your breakfast to take your meds with. Alright?”
You took a deep breath and looked down at your hands, more flashes of the previous night coming to you. “I didn’t hurt either of you did I?” The immediate response was a round of no’s. “Okay… I… I don’t know how to feel about you two right now… you really hurt me…”
“I know darling but you need to be taken care of and right now the safest place for you is with us so we know you are taking your meds and not stressing your shoulder. As soon as your healed you can go back to your room and never see us again if you want.” Natasha said with a tone of finality that made you nod and settle back down against Wanda. You were too tired to fight them at this moment anyways.
You felt her shift you gently over to be on Natasha as your eyes fluttered slowly. You felt yourself drift off again and before you knew it, Wanda was shaking you awake gently, a tray of food sitting on the bedside table. In her hands were a cup of 4 different pills and a bottle of water. You grimaced and buried yourself further into Natasha who chuckled soflty. “No detka… time to take your meds.”
“I’m to nauseous… I’ll just throw it up…” You muttered, hoping they took that at face value and allowed you to go back to sleep however it seemed to be your unlucky day.
“We did a little research last night darling. You’re nauseous because of withdrawal. You need to take your meds because itll help with it, I promise darling.” Wanda said, sitting on the bed beside you gently. You groaned and sniffled looking up at her with your classic puppy dog eyes that she usually gave into. “Nope. As much as I miss those adorable eyes of yours, you still have to take all these pills.
You groaned and shifted to be sitting more upright and sent a pouty glare at Wanda who smiled softly. Your eyes flittered down towards the small cup of pills as you sifted through them, unsure what the last one was. “Two painkillers, adhd meds and…?” You questioned looking up at the brunette sitting in front of you.
“Cho put you on some antibiotics as well for the infection in one of your cuts on your leg.” You nodded, holding your hand out for her to spill the pills into your open hand. After she did so, you tossed the pills into your open mouth then took the uncapped bottle and took a swig to swallow the pills making a face at the sour taste. You pushed the bottle back into Wandas hand with a small grunt. “Good job baby.”
You rolled your eyes and slouched back down, your body telling you, you had done enough for now. “We should try and shower later honey.” You scoffed with yet another roll of your eyes. You felt a surge of annoyance and anger roll through your body.
“You aren’t my parents. You are barely my girlfriends right now because I don’t know if you know this or not but you treated me like abslute crap the last week. You ignored me and then tried to fucking lecture me.” You said, tears of frustration threatening to roll out of your eyes. “I didn’t do anything wrong. We get put into deadly situations everyday and you two snapped at me over something that could have happened to anyone on the team. I’m sorry I’m not perfect enough-“ Your body finally couldn’t hold the sobs in anymore. “You really- fucking hurt me.” You said between sobs.
The two merely pulled you into their arms again and allowed you to sob to let out the emotions. “I hate this… I hate not having control of my fucking emotions…” You mumbled. “This is the worst…”
Wanda hummed, running her fingers through your hair which helped calm you down but also caused you to really settle into the fatigue you suddenly felt again. “Not yet darling… you need to eat something first or you will throw up.” Wanda said, holding out a piece of plain buttered toast. “Eat this then you can go to sleep alright?” You whined looking up at Natasha with your puppy dog eyes again.
“Oh wanda… maybe this one time she can skip it…” The redhead cooed, brushing hair out of your eyes. Wanda scoffed and shook her head.
“No absolutely not. Toast then you can sleep.” The brunette said causing you to pout again, your eyes welling up again. You shook your head looking back at the brunette sniffling. “Im sorry baby but it will help and you know it. Eat the toast then sleep.”
You opened your mouth to show you wanted to be fed. The witch helped you eat the toast before you curled back up into the assassin below you.
It was going to be a hard few days as your body readjusted to the meds but no matter how mean or grumpy you got, Natasha and Wanda took the abuse happily as it meant you were still alive and in their arms.

Love Favors The Misfortunate
Natasha Romanoff x Gender-Neutral Reader
Natasha Masterlist Main Masterlist
Word count: 3.2k
Warnings: Minor Violence
Summary: Misfortune always seems to follow you no matter what you do. But where there’s trouble, Nat often follows, maybe love was on your side after all?
Disclaimer: This was part of a writing exercise I did so it’s kind of silly and unedited but enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~
Somehow you always managed to wind up in the worst situations that Earth could possibly experience. You wondered if you were just cursed or something considering last week you were present for not one but two bank robberies.
Maybe that was just the life of a delivery driver?
You hoped the lady behind the bank counters Caesar salad tasted better after death threats and salty tears of desperation.
This time, however, in the middle of checking the GPS during a stoplight, the sound of screams alerts you to the number of people ditching their cars and running past your motorcycle in fear.
Looking up you see the giant rip in Earth's atmosphere, monster-looking creatures spilling out of the hole.
Oh, Good.
You immediately kick your motorcycle into gear, walking the bike through the crowds of people until you can manage to make a U-turn and speed off, weaving your way through the panic.
You spare a few glances into your mirrors as more flying monsters spill out of the sky and it's during one of these glances that you fail to notice the giant alien who has just landed in the street a few feet ahead of you. By the time you notice him you only have enough time to attempt a full stop which results in your bike sliding from under you and skidding across the pavement. Ouch.
Much to your luck, however, the bike collides directly with the monster and sends it straight into its own spear. A weird purple liquid oozing slowly from underneath the unconscious body.
You frown, it was going to cost a pretty penny to get your bike fixed if it was even salvageable and now you definitely weren’t getting paid for the hamburger and fries that were probably still warm in your delivery bag.
Maybe you could see if french fries taste better after near-death and motorcycle debt.
Wincing, you feel your arms already bruising and your jeans have ripped through to your thigh, you're not bleeding as much as you probably should be from that slide but it still hurts like hell. Thank god you were wearing all your safety equipment.
A hand is extended out to you and you graciously take it, looking up to meet eyes with the prettiest redhead you’ve ever seen. She’s giving you an impressed smile and you feel like you could melt right then and there. Although that might also be from the burning pain in your leg.
You probably need to find a hospital. Or maybe you were dead and this was an angel.
You always figured they’d look like the horrendous abomination of eyes and wings that they were described as, not as pretty redheads with striking green eyes but you weren’t complaining.
“That was a good move” There are still people running past you screaming but it feels like time stops when she speaks to you.
“Yep. that was definitely something I did on purpose” Drumming your fingers on your thighs you watch her chuckle and give you a look that tells you she knows you did not, in fact, do that on purpose.
You glance between your bike and the woman in front of you, screaming civilians making the moment almost comical. You felt like you were in some kind of rom-com apocalypse.
Despite it being the last thing you should probably do, you extend your hand out to her and tell her your name. She gives you a very amused look and you shrug your shoulders as if to say ‘Why not? We’re here aren’t we?’
She chuckles again as she takes your hand, introducing herself.
Natasha. Derived from the Russian name Anastasia, which means resurrection. Maybe she was an angel. Damn.
Natasha nods her head in the direction of the crowd and smirks “Shouldn’t you be joining them?” You shrug. “Unless you know more moves like that?” She gestures toward your beat-up bike and you shake your head
“No. Unfortunately, I haven't mastered the art of more than one motorcycle trick yet” Not that you could get that thing to start back up again after that anyway.
She shakes her head with a laugh, glancing over her shoulder at the mess the city is becoming before turning back to you. “ Well I guess until you learn you should probably get running”
You nod, a little dejected, your calmness in relativity to the situation was likely the result of a concussion but you weren’t worried. Unless Nat was not real, in that case, you should be worried. Very Worried.
“Will we meet again?” it’s cliche and you immediately feel like a protagonist in a Disney movie but it’s a genuine question.
She smirks and looks around at the city again, gesturing to the absolute clusterfuck that New York had become “For your sake, I hope we don't”
You know she doesn’t mean anything bad by it and it’s your turn to smirk when you say “Knowing my luck, we will” You hope she finds herself near a few banks in the upcoming months…
She smiles at you and nods her head in the direction of the crowd and you understand what she’s trying to tell you. With one final wave and a small “good luck” you run in the direction of your fellow New Yorkers, occasionally glancing back to see her running in the direction of the main battle.
You didn't know who she was but Damn did you want to.
~~~
The next time you find yourself in a particularly unfavorable situation is not for months later. Minus that one time you witnessed two old ladies get mugged and that time you almost got hit by an ice-cream truck. But you got free ice cream from the second one so you weren't counting it.
You’d taken up a job in a small pizza place to pay for your bike repairs. It didn’t pay much but you didn’t have that many options after New York got attacked by aliens and half the businesses were destroyed or temporarily shut down. This is one of the few places still open which means on Friday nights you were busy as hell.
It was not a Friday night. It was a Tuesday afternoon and your coworker who was supposed to be on shift with you called out sick which meant you were manning the shop by yourself. Your stupid coworker was probably just off cheating on his girlfriend again but you didn’t care because the shop was empty which meant you could play games on your phone without his judgmental stare.
You’re struggling through level 5 of Candy Crush when the sound of breaking glass comes from the front of the shop and you sigh. You would be surprised but it was New York, more specifically it was your life in New York.
What you are surprised by, however, is the sight of familiar red hair covered in glass in the entryway, and you really want to rub your eyes with the squeaking sound effect like in the cartoons but the amount of microfibers that just got released into the air would suggest not doing that.
“Well well well” You realize you sound more like a supervillain than you intended and you freeze when she stands and sharply turns in your direction, gun pointed directly at you. You throw your hands up in surrender immediately. Goddamn supervillain catchphrases always making pretty girls turn their guns on you.
When she seems to recognize you she relaxes only for a man to jump through the already broken glass window and tackle her to the ground again. You want to help but considering you still haven't learned any more motorcycle tricks(or any tricks in general) you figure you would probably be useless.
You watch helplessly as she disarms and renders the guy unconscious in a matter of seconds and then stands and dusts herself off. The guy on the ground looks like some old-timey variation of Hitler and you're pretty glad she knocked him unconscious before he could even notice you.
You focus back on Nat who's looking at you like a wounded animal that could run away at any moment and It’s then that you realize that most people are not quite used to these kinds of situations. Clearly, you weren’t like most people. You point to the body in a trenchcoat on the ground as you crinkle your nose
“Are you taking that guy with you when you leave?” She huffs out a laugh and you feel yourself smile at successfully getting her to laugh again.
You, one.
Hitlerman, zero.
At least you were winning one game. Stupid Candy Crush.
She looks around the shabby pizza place and then zones in on your nametag, only them seeming to realize you worked there. She tilts her head, nodding to your flimsy little name pinned to your T-shirt.
“Why are you working here? Where’s the bike?” You sigh, you knew the question was coming but it’s still a sore subject for you. You internally punch a wall but on the outside, you frown just a little. It’s the saddest expression Nat’s seen on your face so far.
“She’s in the shop. Repairs are taking longer than I thought and now I’m forced to conform to my least favorite type of work just to get her back” Nat gives an understanding nod and then cringes a little, walking towards you until she’s right in front of you. She places a hand on your head and you inhale sharply.
A small frown forms on Nat’s face “You’re bleeding”
The feeling of her hand on your face confirms that she’s not an angel or a figment of your imagination and you don’t realize you’ve voiced that thought out loud until you hear Nat barking out a laugh.
“I’m flattered but, well-” She glances up, then behind her, then back towards you “I wouldn’t be so sure just yet” She smirks and removes her hand just as a ceiling panel falls from the roof. Dust flies into the air and you cover your face to avoid getting more shit in your eyes.
When the room finally settles Natasha is nowhere in sight but there’s a Captain America band-aid on the serving counter and you feel a small smile across your face. What a dramatic exit. Now who was the supervillain?
You take great notice of the fact that Hitlerman is also gone and you wonder how the fuck she managed to do that. But more importantly, you hoped this wasn’t coming out of your paycheck.
~~~
You can’t emphasize enough to most people how much you’re not even trying to be in the situations you get caught in. In fact, the one time you stayed home for a week you ended up catching the Flu. How the hell do you catch the flu from staying home? After that, you just accepted that you were a magnet for misfortune and there was nothing you could do about it.
Although, after meeting Nat you found yourself a little excited anytime something misfortunate happened and that was probably psychotic and you should definitely check yourself into a psych ward but you’d probably end up choking on a crayon and getting deemed a risk to those around you so what was the use?
Still, of all the robberies you’d been a witness to you’d never been a part of a hostage situation. Until now. Stupid Banks!
Usually, you’d assume that the police would handle a situation like this and you’d be stuck in this bank for hours until someone grew a dick and negotiated something but this time circumstances were a little different. To start, the guy who was currently robbing the bank was holding some type of gun that was the equivalent of real-life freeze tag.
Anyone who got zapped by the oddly blue glowing gun was frozen in place, which led you to problem number two.
The police had shown up nearly half an hour ago and someone must not have briefed them on this wacko holding you hostage because the second one of them snuck in the back door with a gun he was frozen in place looking like the idiot that he probably was.
You would attempt to grab his gun but you didn’t feel like doing that shit. Who were you to risk your life and try to be a hero for some money that this poor fellow probably needed considering New York's rent cost.
Maybe if the stupid fucker hadn’t frozen the one lady who knew the code to the very comically large bank safe he wouldn’t be stuck making stupid negotiations and holding people hostage.
Instead, you settled against a wall near a bunch of crying civilians and attempted once again to beat level 10 of Candy Crush. You give up after ten minutes and delete the app. Really you were just trying to kill the time until you-know-who showed up.
She and her band of merry men had grown a reputation for taking care of situations that the regular authorities couldn’t and that’s why you weren’t the least bit surprised when the room began to fill with a cloudy white smoke.
Others began panicking, fearing that it was some sort of poisonous gas and you rolled your eyes. This was not poisonous gas, you’d seen poisonous gas and this was not it.
This was a very dramatic entrance formulated by your absolute favorite redhead. God, you felt like you were in a spy movie. Any second now you’d see a faint figure slowly descending from the ceiling in all black with a gas mask on and spy music would start playing.
Any second now.
Aaaaaany second now-
A scream from beside you makes you jolt and you find the sobbing woman next to you with a hand over her mouth. A gruff-looking man is telling her to keep quiet and your eyes widen for a second as you think ‘Oh shit. Double robbery.’ But from behind the gruff-looking man walks a familiar figure and she pats him on the shoulder as she passes him.
You squint your eyes, what an oddly metal-looking shoulder. Perhaps you were hallucinating. Stress and all that.
By this point, enough white smoke has filled the room that the bank robber is wildly swinging around in fear as he squints to see. He’s probably more on edge after that woman's scream as well. Yeeeeah more of a horror movie than a spy movie now.
The reason you can see everyone so well is due to your superior eyesight and definitely not the science lab goggles that you had in your bag for no suspicious reasons. Hey, you had to be prepared for literally anything considering your luck.
Nat’s wearing some kind of night vision-looking goggles and a mask and when she passes you you poke her leg. She jumps a little, glaring at you until she seems to recognize you despite your flawless Lab Scientist disguise and her eyes widen. Her eyes seem to scream ‘What are you doing here’ but you feel it’s too obvious of a question to bother answering.
Instead, you give her the biggest smile you can muster and a friendly wave, mouthing “Hiiii Nat!”
She rolls her eyes but you can see the smile she’s hiding under her mask and you mentally fist pump. Three for three.
You point to the man wielding the gun and mouth to her “Go! Team go!”
She shakes her head, exasperated by your lack of fear and self-preservation but holds her finger up to her mouth telling you to be silent as she turns to sneak up on the man.
Your body does so love disobeying orders though, so it chooses that moment to sneeze, which has the man pointing the gun in your direction (not that he can see as his eyes are practically watering now) and Nat turns to you with a glare.
You raise your hands up in surrender and in an attempt to help, you throw the nearest object on the floor across the room. Oh, that was your phone- well, okay. Either way, it helps, the man swings back in that direction, blasting his gun in the air and Nat takes the moment to attack him from behind.
She disarms him easily, taking him to the ground and placing him in handcuffs. She inspects the device carefully, flipping a switch and aiming it at the closest frozen person. With a bolt of light, they unfreeze and gasp for breath. Good, at least the idiot had created some sort of Ctrl-Shift Undo button.
You're part of the first few escorted out of the building considering you weren’t frozen or in hysterics and the paramedics look at you a little funny but wrap a shock blanket around your shoulders.
Yes, shock. That's what you were experiencing. Normal people things. You twist back and forth and watch the shock blanket sway as you wait for Nat to be done with her serious business. God, serious business was boring and took forever.
When she finally emerges from the building she ignores the press and police that come up to talk to her and heads straight for you. Ha! Eat shit losers.
She doesn’t bother with formalities, why would she? It's you. Instead, she hands you a small black box as she takes in the shock blanket you’ve tied around your neck to look like a cape.
“Here’s your phone” You take the object from her hands and inspect it.
Oh wow, No cracks, that's great. Wait- “This is not my phone” You turn it over and inspect the Stark logo on the back of it. Yeeeeah definitely not yours.
“No, it’s not” She doesn't bother lying to you at least, and you hum in acknowledgment. Well, you weren’t one to pass up a free upgrade. You pocket the phone and stick your hands in your front pockets, flashing her a smile
“So… you come around here often?” She rolls her eyes at your stupid attempt at a joke. Or flirting. Either one works.
“How do you keep ending up in these situations?”
It’s your turn to smirk “Maybe it’s just an excuse to see you?”
She gives you a look that says ‘It better not be’ and you just shrug, your shock blanket falling to the ground. Fucker. Making you look uncool. You refuse to bend down and pick it up. Recovery blankets were for losers anyway.
Still, she smiles at you anyway and crosses her arms “I’m beginning to think the only way to keep you safe is to keep you with me”
Your heart leaps but you pretend to be nonchalant. You're only blushing because of shock or whatever. Play it cool “That doesn’t sound like a bad idea” A stupid smile forces its way onto your face despite your best attempts to repress it and Nat laughs at your stubbornness.
“But first I think we’ve got to teach you some self-defense” She nods her head indicating for you to follow her and you both begin walking in step to an unmarked black car.
Kidnapper car.
Cameras are flashing around you and you think about how cool you’ll look with Lab goggles atop your head and white smoke in your hair on the news tomorrow morning. The media was going to love you.
Turning to Nat on your way to the car, you have a question that’s been itching at you that you feel the need to ask
“Do you think your sugar daddy can help me fix my bike?”
She punches you in the arm.
A/n: This was initially a writing exercise to write the silliest short story I could think of, but I thought it was cute so I decided to post it~ Starry
The Barista
Relationship: Matt Murdock x Reader Warnings: nothing. only fluff Summary: Although the barista at the local coffee shop never seems to be able to get Matt's order right, something keeps bringing him back. A/N: enjoy this quick little fluffy thing I whipped up in the notes app of my phone <3
Masterlist
Matt winced after he took another sip of his coffee. You had added cinnamon to it this time. Cinnamon. He didn’t know how you managed to do that. His coffee was simple and, more importantly, never changed, but you—a barista at the local coffee shop—always somehow managed to get it just a little incorrect.
But, also, Matt wasn’t exactly keen on skipping his weekly coffee trips.
“What did she put in your coffee this time?” Foggy asked after having witnessed the face his friend had made.
Matt sighed. “Cinnamon.”
“Cinnamon?” Foggy laughed. “I don’t understand how that is even possible. Why do you keep going to that place?”
Matt did his best to his shrug casual, undetectable. “No reason. It’s not that big of a deal.”
Foggy gasped. “Oh my gosh.”
“What?”
“There’s a hot barista, isn’t there?”
Matt immediately started spewing out (weak) protests. “What. That’s… I— How would I—,”
But Foggy cut him off. “Don’t give me that again, Matthew. You do know. You can’t stop yourself from going to the coffee shop because you’re trying to get with a hot barista.”
“Okay,” Matt said in defeat, “maybe let’s not call her ‘hot barista.’ She’s just… She’s very kind. She makes silly coffee puns when I order. Sometimes we get to talking and… I don’t know. I like it. I like her, I think.”
“Even though she gets your coffee order wrong every single time?”
Matt blushed. “Well, I think I make her a little nervous. I may or may not have noticed some spikes in her heart rate.”
"Oh, that’s perfect," Foggy said with a laugh. "So, when are you going to ask her out?"
"I— I don’t think I can do that. That would be weird, right? Maybe she’s just being nice to me. I don’t want to be one of those customers."
"But you said her heart skips when you walk in."
"Sure, but maybe she’s just an anxious person—,"
Foggy scoffed. "Since when have you ever had this many reservations about asking someone out?"
"I don’t know," Matt admitted with a sigh. "I don't think she needs to get wrapped up in all my stuff."
"Actually it sounds like she very much wants to get wrapped up with you."
"Foggy…"
"Alright, alright, I’ll stop," he said, raising his arms in surrender. "I’m just saying, it sounds like she might be into you so I would at least think about it."
And so Matt did. He tried not to—he really did—but no matter how much he resisted it, your angelic voice and his best friend’s insisting words kept creeping up in the back of his mind. Even when he was out patrolling his city, the thoughts didn’t leave him.
In fact, it consumed Matt for an entire weekend. And he found himself back at the coffee shop bright and early Monday morning.
As Matt opened the door, he was immediately hit by your soft, sweet voice talking to another customer. You were kind and respectful as you interacted with them but Matt was quick to notice you didn’t share a coffee pun. He didn’t know why that made something in his chest warm.
When he approached the counter, he heard your heart speed up just ever so slightly, as if on perfect cue. Matt enjoyed trying to act clueless sometimes.
"Good—Good morning, Matthew," you said. "It’s good to see you again. I missed you a latte this past weekend."
Matt subtly tightened the grip on his cane. He swore you winced at your words, which he found adorable. "Good morning.” He couldn’t help but smile. "That was a good one.”
You giggled. And it nearly took his breath away.
“Thank you,” you replied. “I have to start looking up new ones. I fear I’m running out.”
Matt shook his head. “We can’t have that, can we?”
You laughed again. You were as giddy as ever around him. Maybe Foggy wasn’t completely bonkers, Matt thought.
"What can I get started for you today, Mister Lawyer?”
"Coffee. Splash of cream," Matt answered.
"Of course, of course," you muttered to yourself before waltzing around behind the counter. The sound of grinding beans and dripping coffee made Matt’s ears perk up.
"Busy day today?" You asked over the noise of the machines.
Matt shook his head. "Paperwork to do, files to review. The usual," he replied but his words felt jilted. Should he ask you? Would that be weird? Would you call the cops or something?
"Well, that’s good to hear! Your day will fly by," you said quite cheerfully. It made Matt feel really good—a particular kind of good that didn’t always come easily for him.
"It’s already off to a great start here," Matt replied, taking a little leap of faith. He swore he heard you gasp. "Um, you know, there is something I wanted to ask you."
You were now pouring coffee into a to-go cup. Matt didn’t think you had messed up anything this time but he couldn’t be sure. He was a little distracted.
"Oh, yeah?" You asked. Your voice was suddenly shaky. Your heart rate shot up. Not just a skip like before. It was pounding.
It could mean anything, really, he told himself.
"Yeah." Matt took a deep breath. "I was wondering if you’d like to grab dinner sometime. With me."
Something heavy hit the counter. "Uh, dinner? Like as a date?"
Matt chuckled. "Yes, exactly like a date."
"I’d love to." You didn’t even hesitate slightly. That made Matt feel really good.
"Great," he replied. He was sure he was keeping his composure from the outside but on the inside? He wanted to let out a sigh of relief.
You two exchanged contact information after Matt’s order was ready. He paid and you both kept it very professional, even when he noticed your hands were pretty much shaking.
The professionalism fell when he was bidding you a goodbye. You stepped around the counter to plant a kiss on his cheek and wish him a good day. It nearly took Matt aback but not in a bad way.
A permanent smile was etched onto his face for the entire morning—even when he went to take a sip of his coffee...
Vanilla. Matt could smell it, he could taste it. You had somehow added a splash of vanilla syrup to his cup of coffee. Matt laughed to himself.
(( REQUEST PART THREE ))
mcu!peter parker x reader.
!!! read part one | part two | part four | part five here !!!
IN WHICH — you fell asleep on your best friend during movie night and the avengers won’t let you live it down. meanwhile, peter plans to ask you out, but an old friend of yours gets in the way :0
masterlist.✨
3.2k.
Tumblr media
It felt good for you to finally get some sleep. It seemed like sleeping cuddled next to Peter was the perfect remedy for your sudden insomnia. You wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Waking up in his arms, his biceps snug around you; his quiet snores that still sang through your thoughts. Their melody, and the leftover fumes of his cologne, kept you in a peppy mood. That, and Harley’s holiday visit.
You hadn’t seen Harley in what felt like a year, despite how it had only been a few months. Still, as much as seeing your friend got you excited, the whole Peter–debacle kept you in a tizzy.
Tony had asked you to help circuit a drone prototype in his lab, which gave you a great opportunity to dwell on the fact that Peter definitely saw the framed photo Sam took of the two of you. And read the sticky note. The thought still made your heart rate spike a little, but you couldn’t decipher what it was stemming from.
Part of this made you feel giddy. It gave you a chance to open the bottled up feelings you’ve been rejecting for Peter, and really, truly, encourage them. The other part, however, made you incredibly nervous. Anxious, even. He could react in a way that would completely redefine the long–term friendship that you two had.
His response could either be something equally as smitten, or something that’d haunt you for the rest of your life. It was conflicting, but also you knew that at a certain point, you wouldn’t be able to hide from your feelings anymore. Peter would inevitably find out. You just hoped that it wouldn’t ruin the way he looked at you.
While re–wiring the drone’s hardware, you began to spiral down the dark abyss of how badly this could end. He wouldn’t necessarily get angry with you. Peter Parker didn’t have an angered bone in his body; but this could very well, quite possibly, most definitely, create an incredibly uncomfortable atmosphere in your dynamic.
Fuck.
You wished he’d react the same way he did when you both found out you were superheroes, or when you’d both been recruited to be part of the Avengers. Peter had been your best friend for as long as you could remember. Would these feelings really change that much of it?
“There you are!” Peter’s voice from the doorframe disrupted your thoughts. You immediately felt the way your heart leapt in your chest.
You did hope that things wouldn’t change because of a dumb crush. However, you’d be lying if you said it didn’t feel like things with the two of you were changing already.
Quickly, you glanced over your shoulder, careful not to distract your work. The way Peter walked over to you seemed radiant; he was glowing, and it wasn’t just because he looked fresh out of the shower. He smiled at you, toothy and spritely. The way it suited his energy was contagious, and spread a small grin right to your lips. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” He added, prancing up beside you.
Your focus went back to the drone, mostly because you wanted to hide from the inevitable blush that coated your complexion. “Oh yeah?” You mused, cheeky. “How come?”
Peter leaned his back against the desk you were working at. He kept a comfortable distance from you, but a bit less than usual. You only noticed because his body heat nearly overloaded your system. You cleared the invisible tickle from your throat, feeling the urge to try and hide what felt like vulnerability.
“I wanted to show you my new lockscreen.” His tone outlined his smile audibly. Peter excitedly showed you the addition to his phone, as though he’d been rehearsing it. You felt the way your eyes widened and your face flush at the photo. The same photo that was framed at your bedside. “Sam sent it to me.” He added the detail once you saw it.
Your eyes met. You could feel the playful demeanor that Peter had been camouflaging. He knew exactly what he was doing, and by the dorky expression on his face, you knew that your reaction was exactly what he’d been hoping for.
Dropping the hardware tools beside the drone, you used slow movements. You needed to get his phone. The power he had with that photo was too much for him, and it was already getting to his head. Your hand plunged towards the device, but Peter dodged your reach like he was one step ahead of you. He was always one step ahead of you.
“Peter Benjamin Parker.” You fought back your smile by trying to use a disciplinary tone, but your laughter won the battle. He took paces backwards, and you followed his movement. “Give me your cell phone!”
He laughed, raising a brow. “You want my phone?” He was playing coy, teasingly. “You’re just jealous of my lockscreen.” You two traveled around the large laboratory, him still walking backwards like it was nothing. “I could just AirDrop it to you, if you want it so bad–”
Leaping forward, he dodged you again. He was having too much fun with this, waving his phone in front of your face like a chew toy. “You’re so evil.” Your playful glare was one of Peter’s favorite looks of yours. He took it in like he was taking a picture of it.
His brow arched again, mocking you. “Am I really?” He bantered. You had to admit: as stubborn as you could be, Peter’s playful spirit was something you always enjoyed. And the banter was absolutely riveting to partake in.
Peter’s laughter filled the room as you started to chase him. He was skilled walking backwards, but running was an entirely different story. The two of you practically chased your tails around each other; Peter holding his phone high above you, and you eagerly sprinting and jumping up to try and grasp it.
In the thick of the moment, you’d finally caught up to him. Body to body. Chest to chest. His arm was still extended to the ceiling, phone held to the sky, but his focus was completely captured by you. Your eye contact was thick, and your little fits of giggles halted to a stop at the rousing tension.
Damp strands of curls fell in front of his face as he studied you, eyes tracing features of your face that he’d already memorized. The scent of his shower would’ve sent your head in a pother, if not for the feeling of your bodies melding together. You could feel his heart racing through the mere fabrics of your shirts; you were certain he felt the speedy rhythm of yours, too.
His arm slowly lowered back to his side, but you both could care less about his lockscreen right now. You kept your eyes tied to his, keeping up with the silent conversation you were having. Peter’s mouth opened, dry as he scrambled to find his words. “Y/N..” His voice was soft, gentle. “I need to ask you something.”
Curious and confused, you tilted your head a little. “Ask me what–?
“Y/N!” You heard your name called from the doorframe. Both you and Peter shifted your focus to meet the interruption, finding Harley waiting impatiently. “C’mon! I’ve got something to show you.” How inconvenient.
A look of apology shadowed your face when you looked back up at Peter. “Can you ask me later?” It was the last thing you wanted to ask, but you couldn’t keep Harley waiting; the subtle tapping of his foot caused guilt to nag at your focus.
Both you and Peter peeled away from each other, slowly. It felt unnatural, especially considering that neither of you had the strength to break eye contact.
Peter forced a smile, though you could tell there was disappointment behind it. “Yeah! Yeah. Go.” He waved at Harley, noticing the small glare that accompanied the mirrored action back. “I’ll catch you later.”
He watched you smile at him before running off with Harley. That was how things had been since he’d returned from school.
Harley was always the first to bid for your attention, or drag you out of a room when you and Peter found yourselves alone in it. He was the ultimate cockblock, and a jealous one at that.
Peter had enough trust in you and your friendship to know that there was no competition for his spot as your best friend. However, now his hat was in the ring for a new title: your boyfriend.
Harley could one–up him there.
Peter still had hope after his talk with Sam in the kitchen yesterday morning. He finally felt the courage he needed to ask you out. To ask if you felt the same way. But Harley didn’t make his conquest any easier. In fact, he’d done nothing but get in his way. It was almost like Harley knew what Peter was trying to do.
Last night was Sam’s pick for team movie night. Of course, Sam chose a festive rom–com; he chose The Holiday, and sent Peter a little wink as he cued up the movie. This was an opportunity, and Peter wasn’t going to take it for granted. However, Harley wasn’t going to let Peter have it that easy, either.
As Peter sat beside you, Harley sat on the other side of you, arm draped over the back of the couch. Right where Peter wanted his to be. He noticed how stiff you were, and the way you awkwardly kicked your feet as the movie played.
The memory played through Peter’s head all day, especially while this question burned in his throat. He’d never been so eager to ask you something; so compelled to know the response you’d give him.
Part of him was scared. Just a small part of him. He knew it was a gamble to try and enhance your relationship. You’d either reciprocate the emotions he had for you, or the friendship would go through a little awkward fit. Either way, Peter knew it was a growing experience. He was willing to risk it if it meant getting to spend time with you romantically.
Harley just seemed to anticipate every chance you and Peter caught a moment alone.
Peter wasn’t planning to give up just yet.
And neither were you.
You did enjoy your time with Harley, but it felt like he was pushing it a little. Occasionally, you had the habit of cluelessness, but even now, the inkling that Harley was getting at something felt stronger than ever.
“C’mon, Keener.” You pressed him, trying to get the boy to crack. “It’s like you’re holding me hostage here.” For the past hour, you’d been trying to leave to go find Peter. Your hands went up in defense when Harley shot a look of surprise at you. “Don’t get me wrong, I’ve missed you too, but I’ve–”
That’s when it hit you. Harley was getting at something. Something big. The look he shot at you was overwhelming. You couldn’t quite grasp what he was trying to express to you, but you could tell that he was about to tell you.
He took a breath, slicing through the deafening quiet. “Y/N, I need to ask you something.” His tone was stern, precise. He’d been practicing this, you were sure of it.
Your posture straightened out. From how it sounded, this seemed really serious. Your whole demeanor shifted, stilled. “Yeah, anything.” The last thing you wanted was for Harley to feel like he couldn’t tell you something.
Harley stared into your eyes, grounding you for a moment. You could feel just how much you were anticipating the question, and just how slowly the world spun before he spat out the words. It reminded you of how Peter had something to ask you, too. You wondered just how serious of a question Peter’s was–
“Would you go out with me? Li–like on a date?”
You froze. A date? A date with Harley?
It felt wrong for your thoughts to be consumed by anybody else in this moment, yet they were. Shoulders slumping, you gave him a sympathetic smile. “Harley, I’m flattered, but I—”
He interrupted you. “You have feelings for someone else?” His question came out like a scoff, almost like he was trying to beat you at answering him. “Parker, right?”
And in that moment, when your heart swelled and your cheeks flushed, you finally accepted it. Your posture settled a little, and the breath you’d been holding for the past few days finally released itself. “Yeah.. Yeah, I do.” Your lips curved sympathetically, not wanting to put salt in Harley’s wound. “Y’know, I still appreciate you though, right?”
Harley smiled at you, “Yeah, yeah, whatever..” He laughed quietly. “Now, go find your love–bug boyfriend. I’m sure he’s dying to see you.”
With a grin on your face, and a bittersweet farewell to Harley, you went on your way to find Peter. You knew that rejecting Harley shouldn’t have been as inspiring to you as it ended up being. Now more that ever, you felt determined to ask Peter out. Whether he was planning to ask you or you ask him, you weren’t going to give up until you had a date set on the calendar.
Turning the hallway corner, you found yourself rounding to the kitchen, following the faint sound of Peter’s voice. Waltzing with his words was the sound of Sam’s too, conversing with your best friend. You paused in your tracks, listening in on their conversation til you had a good time to intervene.
Tiny klanks and clinks of spoon on mug came from further away, muffled under Sam as he spoke, “You going to the holiday party tomorrow night?” He asked, “I heard there’s gonna be mistletoe.” You could hear the way his voice shaped into his mug as he took a loud sip of his drink, “You should take Y/N and go find it.”
Heat flooded your face at how forward Sam was, and at the idea of kissing Peter. It was thrilling to think that in just twenty–four hours, you could be kissing Peter Parker. You wouldn’t have to avoid him anymore, you could freely sit with him and express your feelings–
A sigh could be heard from closer than anticipated. A sigh that sounded dejected, conflicted. Rejecting. Ouch. You slowly crept around the corner, eying Peter’s back as he replied to Sam.
“I’m not gonna do that. I can’t.” Peter seemed to hesitate, but that didn’t take away from how much it hurt. “I just don’t want..”
“You don’t want to kiss me?” You found your place to interject, now standing in view of Sam and Peter’s back.
As Peter turned to look at you, it didn’t take much to notice the way his heart was in his throat. His whole body was stiff with regret, and his hands held the air in front of him like there was something to fix. But there wasn’t; you had your answer.
Peter Parker didn’t love you like that.
“Y/N, I–” Even as he took steps towards you, it felt like he only got further away from you. You put space between the two of you, a hand coming out to emphasize the physical boundary you needed.
You shut your eyes for a second, taking a breather. Keeping your composure was your main focus. “No, no. It’s fine.” You tried to keep earnesty and understanding in your tone. “But you don’t have to make kissing your best friend seem like such a chore.” You snapped a bit more intensely than you’d intended, but you needed to. You had to leave.
One more breath and you left, unable to look Peter in the eye again before you made your way to your room. You hated how the look on his face stuck in your brain like some traumatic flashback. The look in his eyes when he saw you was almost as hurt as you were. It didn’t make sense.
Making your way into your room, a knock interrupted your peace of mind. Holding off on processing your rejection, you turned and met eyes with Sam. You didn’t know whether it was a welcomed company or something you wanted to turn away.
Before you could open your mouth, Sam spoke up.
“I know what happened back there wasn’t.. The best, but I swear it was–”
“Sam.” The words came out shorter than you were used to. “If you’re here to talk to me about that, I don’t want to hear it.”
It sucked. You hated the feeling of being rejected. It also felt so much heavier because you’d already been avoiding Peter, you’d already been missing his company; now, you felt like you had more reason to steer clear of him. You hated it. You hated how much it hurt you.
Shaking his head, Sam got on task. “Right, okay.” His tone became less sympathetic, but his expression still said everything that his words didn’t. “Buck and I were assigned to stakeout tomorrow, but our backup fell through. What Parker and I were talking about in the kitchen was if you and him could stakeout and then Buck and I could back–up for you two.”
You blinked a few times. He was really asking you to do that? To sit in a car with Peter after he’d just ripped your heart out?
After thinking about it like that, you fully realized that Peter was oblivious to your heartbreak. He didn’t know he’d rejected you, and he was still your best friend. Maybe this was a sign, and something the two of you needed to do.
Sighing, you held back an eye roll. “Fine. I could do that.” You placed your hands on your hips, raising a brow at Sam. “Did Peter agree to it?”
“Cuddle–bug said that as long as you were okay with it, he’d be more than happy to.”
Hearing the nickname lodged a dagger in a spot you didn’t think was reachable. God, it hurt. It might get worse with this mission, but you also knew that you’d never forgive yourself if you’d fully pushed Peter away.
“Okay. Then tell him to meet me in the garage tomorrow morning.”
Sam seemed to respect the boundary, and let you be after you’d given him the request. You didn’t have the stomach to see Peter before the stakeout, and you knew you’d have to prepare yourself quite a bit before you’d have to spend god knows how long with him tomorrow. Alone.
God knows how long you’d have to spend with him alone, in a car, doing nothing.
You were planning to kill Sam when you got back, especially if this was some kind of ruse to set up you and your best friend.
It’s been a month since you and Bucky shared a bed. It’s been a month since he saved you from that disastrous date with Jackson. It’s been a month since you felt his arms around you, and you haven’t felt them since. It’s like after that night, Bucky went back to his normal ways of fucking a new girl every week. He refuses to think about that night, talk about that night, and acknowledge that it even happened.
Sometimes, he’d bring two girls back to the apartment for a very long night of you wanting to kill yourself from the noises you’d hear. You don’t get it. You thought you two had something. Were you just a means to an end? Another girl to get into his bed even though you never did anything other than sleep? Another notch in his belt?
The only person you can find comfort in is your best friend and Bucky’s sister, Mia. She’s the only one who will hear you complain about him because everyone does it. All of her friends who have gotten involved with Bucky have complained to her about how he didn’t treat them right or they caught feelings but he tossed them aside like they meant nothing.
However, this time it’s different. It’s the way you talk about Bucky or the way she sees him with other girls that makes her think there is something more to this than meets the eye.
“He hasn’t said anything to you?” you ask and fiddle with your cappuccino.
“No, sorry, hun.”
“I should move out. I don’t know where I’d go.”
“I wish I could say you can stay with me. Ty and I just converted the spare bedroom into our home office.”
“I know. I appreciate the offer. I have a little money saved but I have to tough it out until I get enough to afford something small.”
“Ty’s sister is a real estate agent. I can give her your number and she can try and help you out.”
“Yeah, maybe. I’m still trying to figure things out.”
“Hey, can Ty and I borrow your car this weekend? Ours is in the shop and we planned a romantic weekend up north.”
“Yeah, that’s fine. I’ll drop it off the night before.”
“Thanks!”
You take a sip from your coffee and hear a motorcycle in the distance. You’d recognize that bike anywhere. Bucky pulls up near the cafe where you and Mia are and parks on the side of the road. He has a girl on the back of his bike that he no doubt met that day. Right in front of him is some fancy clothing store she wanted to go to. She gets off the bike, removes her helmet, and leaves him on the bike to go inside the store alone.
Bucky looks in your general direction but with his helmet on, it’s hard to determine exactly what he is looking at. Still, that doesn’t stop the glare you’re giving him.
“Just ignore him,” Mia says and pops a doughnut hole into her mouth.
“Easier said than done,” you mutter and look away from him. “That next morning, he acted like nothing happened. I figured he didn’t want to talk about it. Then a couple of days passed and he still didn’t mention it. Weeks went by and now I know he’s doing this to me on purpose. He’s being an ass.”
Bucky gets off his bike and takes off his helmet to get some fresh air, and he leans against the side of it effortlessly. If you were to do that, you’d surely knock the bike over. He waits for his fuck buddy to come out of the store, and she bounces over to him with a bag in hand. She wraps her arms around his neck and he pulls her in for a kiss.
It’s the kind of kiss that is meant for the bedroom but also the kind of kiss you want to show off to someone. You can’t be here anymore.
“I gotta go. I’ll talk to you later.”
You get up and toss some bills onto the table for your drink and leave in the opposite direction of Bucky and his new toy.
Bucky pulls away from the girl and looks over to where you and Mia are. When he doesn’t see you, he looks around for you only to see your retreating figure. He feels like shit for doing that. He absentmindedly rubs the knuckles that hold small scars from when he beat Jackson up for what he did to you.
You take the entire day to walk around town and be by yourself, so when you get home it’s already dark. Bucky is in the kitchen cooking something when you put your keys in the bowl by the front door. You round the corner and see him cooking something with only a towel wrapped around his waist as if he just got out of the shower. However, there isn’t any water on his body.
“Grab it while it’s hot,” he says.
“Really? You’re cooking in a towel? You couldn’t have gotten dressed first?”
He opens his mouth to reply but someone speaks from his bedroom that interrupts him.
“Bucky, where are you? I’m getting lonely.”
Bucky doesn’t feel guilty that he has a girl over. He feels guilty that you caught him. He sees the heartbroken look in your eyes that makes him want to shoot himself.
“Thanks for the offer but I’m not hungry. I’m sleeping over at Mia’s tonight.”
He lets you walk away.
The weekend comes quicker than you’d like. Without a car, you’re stuck in the apartment, and you’re not about to ask Bucky for a ride on his motorcycle. You’re stuck in your room on your phone when you get a message from Mia.
Hey, I know you didn’t ask for this but I hooked you up with someone Ty knows. He’s super nice!
like a blind date?
Yeah. I can tell him you’re not interested. I figured this is your chance to get over my brother.
yeah, i can try. where is the date?
At the new bar that just opened next to the cafe. His name is Travis. I told him 7 tonight.
okay. thank you. i’ll let you know how it goes.
Seven is three hours away, so you better get ready now. After taking a shower, you look in your closet for something to wear and come across the dress you wore for your date with Jackson. You haven’t worn it since because of the memories attached to it. Not memories of Jackson, memories of Bucky. Next to that dress is Bucky’s leather jacket he told you to keep. Like the dress, you haven’t worn it since and you’re sure as hell not going to wear it now.
There is a floral print dress that goes down to your ankles. It’s off the shoulders with long sleeves down to your wrists that bunches so the sleeves look flowy instead of compressed. The entire dress is flowy and light, perfect for a blind date. The match, you have chunky white wedges that give you a few extra inches. You keep your makeup light, hair down in soft waves, and jewelry that compliments the dress.
You leave your room and look at Bucky’s closed door. He’s been spending a lot of time in his room this past week with girls he picks up from anywhere. The only reason you’re telling him where you’re going is because you live with him. If you don’t, he’ll send an army to go look for you. There are noises and giggling coming from inside the room but when you knock, they cease.
One minute later, the door opens a crack and Bucky stands there with messy hair and sweats on.
“I’m going out. Don’t wait up for me.”
Bucky takes a moment to look at the outfit you’ve chosen and his demeanour changes immediately.
“Where are you going?”
“I have a date.”
“You don’t have a car.”
“I’ll Uber. Have fun with your girlfriend.”
You leave before he has a chance to say anything else. It takes the Uber ten minutes to get to you and another thirty minutes to get to the restaurant. Mia sent you a picture of what the man looks like but it was grainy and unclear. You step out with your phone in hand while looking around for Travis.
“Y/N?”
You turn to see an attractive man wearing a nice suit. You look at the picture once more to confirm it’s Travis, which it is.
“You must be Travis,” you chuckle nervously.
“Yeah. Wow, Mia sent me your picture but nothing compares to real life. You’re beautiful.”
“Thank you,” you blush.
“I made us a reservation. Shall we go inside?”
“After you.”
You two walk inside, get your table, order, and start chatting about your lives. Travis is a bit boring when it comes to having adventures. Unlike you. You can write a book about the adventures you’ve been on because you have Bucky as a roommate. When he’s not fucking some random girl, he’s actually pretty cool to hang out with. You two have been everywhere in town doing all sorts of things.
“So, what do you do for work?” Travis asks and sips his drink.
“Uh, I am an IT specialist who works from home. I get calls daily on how to fix computers and other tech-related stuff. It pays well and I get to stay home, so that’s a bonus.”
“That’s awesome. I’m terrible when it comes to computers.”
“What do you do?”
“I am a financial manager. Like you, it pays well but I’m stuck in meetings and in the office all the time.”
“Have you always wanted to work in the financial world?”
The waitress comes by with your food and sets the plates in front of you and Travis. You think she’s going to walk away and you can continue your conversation with Travis, but that’s not what happens.
“Am I supposed to be impressed with this?” he asks angrily.
“Excuse me?” the waitress stutters.
“I don’t even have to touch this to know it’s cold. Do I have to go back there and tell you how to do your damn job?”
Your mouth opens in embarrassment and shock.
“I’m sorry, sir. I’ll take this back right now and have it fixed.”
The waitress grabs the plate without looking at you and leaves immediately. Poor thing looks like she is going to cry. Travis shakes his head and turns back to you as if this never happened.
“So, anyway, I went to business school and all that, but it’s nice to get out of the office every once in a while, you know?”
You have no idea what to say. Mistreating waitstaff is an immediate turn off. Everything attractive about this man suddenly turns sour. You’re lucky you saw this early on instead of at the end of the date.
“I’m sorry, I have to use the ladies room. I’ll be right back.”
“Oh, sure.”
You take everything you own with you because you’re not coming back to this table. You make it seem like you’re going to the bathroom in case he’s watching but once your table is out of sight, you find the first waitress you see which so happens to be yours.
“Hey, I am so sorry about the way he spoke to you like that. I don’t even know him. My best friend set me up. Listen, I gotta get out of here but the table we’re at is by the door. Is there a back entrance I can use?”
“Yeah, I got you. He gave me the ick as soon as I saw him,” she shutters. “Follow me.” She takes you through the kitchen and the back door that they use when they go on breaks. “Good luck.”
“Oh, and don’t be afraid to spit in his food.”
“Trust me, the cook’s all over it.”
You walk through the small alley next to the bar to the main street. You take out your phone to call an Uber, but luck has it so that you don’t have any service. You try moving the phone around, even walking down to the street light, but nothing comes up.
“Damn it,” you mutter.
You can’t call Mia. You can’t use your car because she has it. The only person you know is Bucky. Should you call him? He’s probably frolicking with that woman still. Even if you were to call him, he’d probably hate you for ruining his date. The only other option is to walk home even though it took thirty minutes to get here by car.
The road stretches through the mountain briefly which you don’t want to walk through but what else are you gonna do? If you can’t get service in a busy restaurant area, there is no way you’re gonna get service in the mountains. The walk gives you time to think about your life. You have a good job that pays well but you can’t keep living with Bucky if it means seeing him with all these women. You have a major thing for him and it kills you to know you’re not the one he’s going home with.
Ten minutes go by until you hear the unmistakable sound of a motorcycle. It races past you without a second thought, screeches to a stop, turns around, and slowly creeps up behind you. You don’t have to see who it is to know who it is. Bucky pulls up next to you and walks the bike to keep up with your pace.
“Get on the bike.”
“No, I’ll walk. Thanks.”
“Don’t be difficult, Y/N. Get on the bike.”
“How the hell did you even find me?”
“I asked Mia. She told me the guy you were on a date with. I looked him up, and he posted to his Facebook about how his date ditched him, and all women are beneath him. He’s a fucking loser. I mean, he still uses Facebook,” he chuckles. “I figured you were out here somewhere.”
“Stop stalking me,” you roll your eyes. “I’ll meet you at home.”
“Get on the damn bike.”
“No!” Bucky revs his engine and surges forward, parking right in front of you to prevent you from going further. You try to go around him but he moves his bike in your path. “Why the hell do you care about me? You’ve proven I mean nothing to you.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” he asks and gets off his bike.
“You fucking know what I’m talking about. If you don’t, then you’re not worth my time.” You try pushing past him to continue your walk but he grabs your arm to prevent you from doing so. You quickly turn and slap his face. The shock is enough for him to let go of you. “Don’t fucking touch me. The last time you touched me, you left and never spoke of it again. Just go, please. You have a girl waiting for you at home. Just go to her.”
“I can’t!”
“Why not?!”
“Because she’s not you!” he yells loudly.
“Do better,” you scoff.
“Fuck,” he mumbles to himself. “I love you!” You pause to take in the information. “I can’t get you out of my fucking head. I’ve been trying all month to get you out of my head. None of the girls I’ve brought home have ever stuck because they’re not you. Being with you that one night has been better than anything I’ve done all fucking month.”
“Then why did you let me walk away?” you ask in a heartbreaking tone.
“Because I’m an idiot. Because you’re the realest thing I’ve ever had, and I didn’t want to fuck it up.”
Silence befalls the two of you, and you look around the desolate road.
“So, what are you gonna do about it?”
More silence. Bucky takes three big steps to get to you, grabs your waist with one hand, slides his other into your hair, and kisses you like he was supposed to a month ago. His lips fit so perfectly against your own like they belong there. You’ve pictured this moment in so many different ways, but this is not on your list.
“Are we really doing this?” you ask when he pulls away.
“Do you want to?” You nod with a smile. “You’re my girl now.”
“No more other women.”
“I’ve got the one I want.”
He leans down and kisses you again, this time, making your head soar to new places.
Summary: Loki didn’t lack in giving you anything. He was attentive to your needs and is a surprisingly good lover. Alas, his endless gifts and spoilings leave you feeling guilty for receiving so much. You have never asked for anything specifically until one day; you had an ache to take something of his. “I must not be doing my job right if my love still wants something?”
...
Loki has never failed to give you anything. Actually, most of his gifts are of his own accord. From silver jewelry to gems of every color, he gave whenever he could. You have always been grateful for it, but constantly receiving gifts knowing you can never repay them, leaves a bubbling guilt inside your stomach.
“Loveee!” A cheerful voice enters the living room. You were sat on the kitchen counter eating fruits while the large television played a nostalgic show.
“Loki, you’re back!” You grin. A smile you will forever greet him with everytime he comes back unscathed.
“Of course. I have a gift to present my divine goddess.” Loki motioned to his hand. A pink paper bag he had held tightly was now waving at your face. An excited ‘Oh’ formed at your lips as you grab whatever is inside. A soft texture arrives at your touch as you take it out. It was a fluffy textured box usually containing rings.
“Loki…” You began, “I told you, I dont need THIS many gifts! You’ve given more than enough!” You try to protest, but a hand to your face stopped your antics.
“Darling, I will spoil you as I please.”
“Yes but why must all of them be top-grade? Treasures that I cannot repay!” You pouted, your eyebrows pressed together.
Loki grabbed your cheek and caressed it softly. “I will only ever give you gifts worth your time, sweetheart.” Before you could exchange another sentence of no’s, the phone ringing suddenly filled the room with a repetitive chime.
Loki released his hold on you and walked further away to pick up his phone. He was speaking but it was inaudible. His facial expression created tension among his bones. Instead of wondering what they were discussing about, you instead took in Loki’s length and the extent of his obsession with coats. His pants that were worn out from battle and a dagger…
A dagger that shone gold and green, attached to his boots. The pocket being sheer enough to see through the detail of the weapon. It was by far, one of the most gorgeous daggers you’ve seen Loki owned. It’s silver hilt that had ‘LOKI’ engraved in little letters.
“(y/n)?” Your head snaps back to Loki walking to you.
“So? What do you think of the gift?” He grins, all the stress from his face faded away without a trace.
You nod, “its beautiful, of course. I love it. Thank you Loki.”
Tumblr media
Days flew by, yet the ache in your heart would not stop bubbling. Your mind had an itch you could not satisfy, a picture popping up in your mind the moment your eyes fluttered close.
You wanted that dagger. To use something of Loki’s, something flashy yet something soft to your touch. Unfortunately, you would rather go mute than ever ask anything from him. He has simply given you way too much, things and memories you simply cannot repay.
“Somethings wrong.”
His voice snapped your train of thought. The fruits you've been cutting have taken you atleast 20 minutes already. You hum in response before feeling his arms wrap around your waist behind you. “Tell me what it is that troubles you, my sweet.”
You bit your lip. Why on earth do you even wish for that stupid dagger? Your vanity table that had trinkets and jewelry in every box and corner, your closet filled with every type of clothing all painted in your favorite colors. Why do you want something of his? Something you barely would use anyway!
“I-,” you shut your eyes tight. Unable to keep the frustration in.
“Go ahead.” Loki snuggles his face onto the crook of your neck. He tightens his grip, encouraging you to go on.
“I- um, whew, I want…I mean, Ive been wanting something.” You sigh in relief, glad you could finish your sentence.
Loki releases his hold on you, turns you so that you are met with his face. His eyebrows is raised and a grin is formed by his lips. He chuckles lightly, “You want something…” he buries himself on your shoulder. This might just be the first time you actually ask for something specific from the God of Mischief.
“I must not be doing my job right if my love still wants something?” He teased, yet your feelings wavered. How could he think he’s not doing his ‘job’ right when he’s actually given way too much?
A louder chuckle escapes his lips as you feel him grin against you. “I had simply meant that I hoped to give you the world.” He whispers softly, enough for you to hear.
He faces you now, grabbing you on both your shoulders. “Tell me, my sweet, sweet, lover.” He puts his point finger under your chin and tilts it slightly higher. “What is it that you wish for?”
You lowered your head realizing how ridiculous your next words will sound, wanting such a simple thing yet asking for it sheepishly. “…dagger.”
Loki’s eyes lit up. He raises his hand and suddenly something shone brightly from it, he had summoned the exact dagger you wanted.
“Im glad it caught your eye. Its a special design you see, something unique from all the others.” He grabs your hand and places the dagger inside of it just before kissing your fingers.
“Remember, everything I have is yours and soon enough, I will have, the nine realms.” You nod as you clutched his new gift.
“Thank you, it truly is magnificent.”
Sunflower. [Miles Morales/Reader]
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
I originally posted this on AO3 here !! I’m new to Tumblr so sorry if this seems messy or smthn
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
It had been a year since Miles’ dad (Jefferson Davis) had passed away. Exactly a year. He felt stupid crying about something that happened so long ago, but that was his dad. His dad that looked after him, raised him, loved him. But apart of him was so angry at himself for not moving on. It happened a year ago. He’d gone without him for a year, why was he so upset? The boy was a superhero who had seen many die, including his own best friend (Phin) and he still couldn’t take death well.
You were well aware that Miles struggled with the idea of death, which was completely understandable. He was so protective of you whenever the both of you went patrolling, or even went out to the park. He’d do whatever he could to keep you safe, even though you were a superhero yourself. Now, this could be really annoying as you knew you could take care of yourself and you’d tell him that, but you knew it came from a good place and you knew he didn’t want to control you. He was just scared that he’d lose you too.
”Hey, Spidey.” You greeted him. Apart of you knew that he’d want to be left alone, but he needed comfort. Otherwise he’d suffer in silence. Again.
When he stayed silent, you decided to sit down next to him, dangling your feet over the edge of the building.
”Go away. I don’t wanna talk.”
If you didn’t know that he was upset, then you’d be offended by this. But you knew he was going through it and you knew you needed to comfort him.
”Talk to me, Miles. I know today is the day, let’s talk about it.”
”Talking doesn’t do anything to help.”
”You didn’t say that when my sister died, did you? C’mon Morales, tell me what’s in that head of yours.”
He didn’t wanna admit that you were right, but he knew you were. Your sister had passed away when you were 13 and Miles was there with you throughout all of it, so you had to do the same.
”I just…” he paused, looking down at his lap. From the shaking of his body, to the sniffles that escaped his nose, you knew he was crying. Your natural instinct would be to hug him, but Miles wasn’t one for that type of physical affection when he was crying. So, you opted for rubbing his back instead. Drawing small circles. “I m-miss him.” He mumbled, looking up at you with a wry smile and tears rolling down his face.
“I know. I know you do, we all miss him Miles. And he misses you too. And I know you feel embarrassed for crying about it a year later… but don’t forget that’s your dad. You grew up with him, you had a bond with him. You still do, even if he isn’t here physically.” He looked at you, taking in you features. Something about you face calmed him and he instantly felt his tears not fall as heavily. Was this apart of your powers? Making people happy? Or was that just natural to you?
In reality, Miles didn’t need your words even though he appreciated them. If anything, he just needed to see your smile. Your smile that was as bright as the sun, as bright as the stars in the sky… well maybe not the stars in New York since you can’t really see them due to light pollution but, you get the point.
”Thank you.” He spoke, still crying softly.
”Anytime. By the way… I have a question.” You spoke before you could think. Yes, you did have a question in mind but you didn’t actually want to ask it.
”Sure.”
Welp. No going back now. Would he think you’re insensitive for asking? You just wanted to cheer him up… You went for it.
“What’s your favourite flower?” the sentence left your lips, your eyes still trained on his face.
“…huh?” The boy hummed, a stray tear on his cheek. Your thumb found itself swiping the tear away, cupping his face. Blinking, Miles waited for you to repeat the question. Even though he was certain he heard you, he wanted to make sure his suspicions were correct.
“I said,” you started, smiling softly “what’s your favourite flower?”
He was confused, such a random question at such a random time…? But, he still answered. “Um, I suppose… sunflowers? Yellow is a cool colour ,I guess and they look kinda cool.”
His eyes followed your movements as you held your palm out. Nothing happened for a few seconds, before soil slowly formed in your hand. After another couple of moments, a small sunflower sprouted from your palm and you smiled. Plucking the flower, you moved your hand to his cheek and placed the flower behind his ear. “Good choice. Sunflowers always try to find the sun, even on the darkest days.”
The corners of his lips curled up ever so slightly and a airy laugh escaped his lips.
He too spoke before he could think. “Well, then I guess you’re my sunshine and I’m your sunflower.” Miles. Why the heck did you say that?! He mentally ridiculed himself as your face contorted into a surprised and confused look.
“How? What—Why? Where did that come from?”
”Well,” he thought before he spoke this time and decided to go for it. “Everyday, I always look for you because you make me happy. Whenever it’s a bad day, you always find a way to cheer me up. Like today… Maybe I should call you my sunshine?” He asked, even if you declined, he’d still do it. It was a fitting name. You were his sunshine.
You blinked once. Then again. And then again. And then you laughed, your cheeks a faint pink.  “Well if you’re gonna call me sunshine, I’m gonna call you sunflower.”
”Oh really?”
”Yeah, because you’re my sunflower!”
Can I request morning cuddles with tony stark and fem reader? Sleepy tony is so cuteeee
Hi anon! Thank you so much for this request!! I love sleepy Tony. I hope you like it!
Tumblr media
Sleepy Snuggles
Tony Stark x Fem!Reader
Summary: Tony wants cuddles the minute he wakes up. You gladly oblige.
CW: not proofread. none. fluff, mentions of Tony being an adventure, pet names
WC: 897
It was rare that you woke up with Tony still in bed. The rarest occasions were when you woke up with Tony still sleeping in your bed, but you never complained on the occasions you were blessed to witness sleepy Tony. It didn’t happen often, what with his nightmares and his incessant insistence that tinkering until he literally passed out helped, but when it did happen, you loved every second of it.
This morning happened to be one of those occasions. You’d managed to persuade Tony to go to bed at the same time you did the night before, mumbling an excuse about watching a movie with him. After you’d both changed into your pajamas and settled into bed, he put on a movie that you managed to watch half of before dozing off, your head comfortably pillowed on his bare chest.
You awoke on your side of the bed, facing away from him. It wasn’t shocking, really, as you had been known to toss and turn on occasion. Tony paid it no mind, as you dealt with him thrashing when he had a nightmare, and he usually just moved you to your side of the bed.
Turning over to face him, you found that he was still sleeping. You wished you could always see him as peaceful as he was while he slept, but you knew it wouldn’t happen. Not with him being Iron Man and an Avenger. No, his life simply wouldn’t allow it.
Tony groaned and stirred, somehow moving closer to you, his arm lazily draped over your waist. You couldn’t stop the giggle that escaped, running your fingers through his hair.
“Mm… baby?” he mumbled sleepily, eyes still closed.
“Right here, Tones.”
He scooted closer, shoving his face into the juncture where your neck and shoulder met.
“Stay?” Tony asked softly, his voice raspy and slightly deeper than usual.
“Always.”
“Y’ promise?”
It was odd to hear him so vulnerable. Tony was a lot of things, but vulnerable was not one of them.
“I promise, baby,” you assured him, pressing a kiss to his forehead. Tony sighed in contentment, his arms wrapping around your middle and pulling you closer to him.
Resigning to your fate, you ran a hand up and down his back, the other lightly scratching his scalp. Tony hummed, tilting his head upward slightly.
“There’s those pretty brown eyes,” you smiled at him, using the hand that was rubbing his back to caress his face. Tony smiled sleepily, leaning into the touch. “Why are you up so early?”
He shrugged. He wasn’t even sure what time it was; all Tony knew was that you were still in bed and he wanted cuddles. He gently grasped your wrist, pressing a kiss to the palm of your hand before releasing it.
“You’re so beautiful,” he whispered, his hand moving to cup your face. “My favorite person.”
“You’re so sappy when you’re sleepy,” you giggled, blushing.
“You’re deflecting. You’re beautiful, Y/N.”
The blush deepened. Tony grinned, happily pressing a chaste kiss to your lips.
“Sap,” you mumbled, earning a giggle from Tony.
“Only for you, dear.”
Tony shifted, burying his face in your chest. You huffed a laugh, allowing him to get as close as humanly possible, your legs intertwined. He sighed contentedly, one hand resting on your hip while the other wrapped around you, lazily tracing his fingertips along your back. You hummed, tilting your head downward, letting your head rest against his hair.
“I could get used to this,” he mumbled. “I think I am.”
“Good.”
“Good?” His brows furrowed.
“Maybe you’ll sleep more if I promise to cuddle you first thing in the morning.”
Tony laughed. “I don’t know about that, honey. But I’m not opposed to cuddles every morning.”
You chuckled. Sure, Tony might have been a chronic insomniac that only slept after he collapsed from exhaustion, but he would never miss the opportunity for cuddles. If you could find a way to get him to sleep more while bribing him with cuddles, it would be a win-win situation.
“Stop thinking about how you can bribe me with cuddles.”
“Wha—I would do no such thing!” you spluttered, much to his amusement.
“You would. And while I’m flattered that you care so much you’re willing to bribe me, I am fine, honey.”
“You don’t sleep enough, Tony,” you sighed. “I worry about you.”
“And I worry about you, but I’m not gonna bribe you to sleep.”
You couldn’t help but laugh. “No, you’d just create a protocol where Friday is required to tell you how much I sleep, and then you’d pester me about it until I started sleeping right.”
“I would do no such thing.”
“You definitely would.”
Tony giggled at the accusation, snuggling closer (if that was even possible). You said nothing as you played with his hair, basking in the comfortable silence that had fallen around you. Tony was happy — half-asleep, maybe, but he was happy, and that made you happy.
“Baby.” Tony murmured.
“Mm?”
“I love you.”
You smiled, planting a kiss on top of his head. “I love you, Tony.”
“Don’t move?” he requested, moving just enough that he could look up at you. “You don’t have anything to do?”
“Nothing,” you assured him.
“Mmm… good. Cuddle with me all day.”
You huffed in amusement, letting him snuggle close again.
“Whatever you say, babe.”
Y/n’s pov
I don’t remember much of last night after knocking the mop over all I know is that Wanda and Natasha at one point we’re comforting me which was weird in itself.
I stirred slightly before noticing a presence beside me, well more like under me. my head was laid against someone’s chest, i could hear their steady heartbeat and smell their perfume. My eyes fluttered open slowly and the first thing i saw was a mass of red hair. I gasped wrenching out of her arms but winced when an IV pulled my skin. “Shit…”
Wanda shot up from her position, asleep next to the bed in a chair and reached her hands out. “Baby don’t pull on that. We’ll get it taken out properly.” My head whipped up to stare at her as she stood across the bed from me, one arm stretched out, the other clutching the sheets under Natasha who had propped herself up on her elbows staring at me confused.
“Wha- why- what’s g-going on?” My voice came out in a hoarse whisper, grating against the throat.
“You got shot yesterday detka… you almost passed out in the hallway. Turns out you also had a fever. You spent the night in the medbay. We didn’t want to leave you alone.” Wanda explained softly sitting back down, giving me space to figure out what was going on.
“But-but why was I sleeping on Natasha…?” A glimpse of sadness flickered over the redheads eyes before she gently smiled. “You were upset last night darling so you asked me to cuddle. Come here, let me take the IV out and we can go find somewhere more comfortable to talk hmm?” I bit my lip nodding carefully, sizing them both up before I took small steps toward the bed where Natasha gently took my hand and pulled the IV drip out of my arm. She placed a bandage over the spot, kissing it, almost out of instinct.
A look of confusion must have flickered across my face because Wanda sighed softly. “Come darling, let’s go sit in the living room hmm?” I retracted my hands and interlaced them together in front of me and followed the couple as we went towards the living room. They seemed to have a conversation with each other through their minds.
I sighed as my anxiety started to increase. I struggled the most being around these two as I’ve always wished they could almost mother figures towards me however they don’t like me. They sat on the couch, side by side, their hands interlaced. I sat in an armchair, crossing my legs underneath me, causing me to wince before untucking my left leg and let it hang down, swinging back and forth slightly. My head was tucked down, my eyes staring at my hands which were now picking at my skin around my thumbs, a bad habit I picked up from being around Natasha.
“We need to talk to you detka.” Natasha said quietly. “We messed up in the past. We shouldn’t have been treating you the way we were. It wasn’t fair.”
“You’re right it wasn’t.” I snapped, my defences coming out as i glanced up at them through my eyelashes, the look of sadness flickered across their faces confused me.
“Detka… let us finish okay?” Wanda said softly, I nodded softly in response. “We messed up. We want to make things right and explain why we acted the way we did. Can we do that?” I nodded softly finally looking up at them as Natasha continued. “You shouldn’t be on this team. Not because you aren’t skilled enough but because you’re still so young. You deserve better, to try and live as a teenager. We hoped maybe if we didn’t get close to you then maybe you would want to leave. You would ask Fury to move you… but you’re to stubborn for that.” I snorted slightly nodding my head, knowing fine well she’s right on that count.
“You are so important malyshka. You deserve to have a family which if you would like, me and Natasha would like to be that for you. Even if you don’t want us to be your official parents, we would still like to be your guardians y/n. People you can rely on. Talk to. Go to if you’re upset or scared or hurt.” Wanda said, her eyes full of fear, fear of what? I have no idea, all I know is I never wanted her to feel it again. “Last night when you were out of it, you called us mama and momma. It really made us realize how much we care about you.”
During her talk, my eyes welled up, tears filling them up, my hands picking at the skin even more now, causing it to bleed. I leaped out of my seat and clambered into Natasha’s arms, my tears turning into light sobs as I buried into her neck. “Mama… it was real… you-you… you wanted me…”
Natasha’s arms wrapped around my body, pulling me into her, rocking was back and forth gently. I felt warm drops on my head and looked up at her blinking softly. “Mama… don’t cry…”
“They’re happy tears detka… I’m just glad you feel so safe with us… we love you so much and we will spend the rest of our lives showing you that.” She said pressing kisses all over my face, making me erupt in giggles before Wanda stole me and tugged me on to her lap, her arms wrapped around my waist, pressing kisses into my head. “We love you so much detka… so much…”
“I love you guys too momma…” I murmured burying into the crook of her neck, my arms wrapping around her neck. I yawned softly into her neck and then felt her chuckle softly. “If you’re sleepy detka, take a nap, we won’t go anywhere okay?” I nodded softly into her neck and after reaching my arm out for Natasha who placed her hand in mine allowing me to pull her closer, snuggled into the two falling asleep rather quickly.
Natasha’s pov
Y/n pulling my arm so I was wrapped around her and Wanda made my heart flutter. This sweet girl took our talk so well. She’s already so comfortable around us. I love her so much. It makes my whole body melt. The three of us sat like this, cuddled together, Wanda and I just chatting about nothing until a loud bang of a door slamming opened, caused y/n to jump and start shaking in our arms.
“Shhh… you’re okay detka… it was just the guys being loud… you’re okay…” Wanda muttered into the girls hair squeezing her slightly. I shot a hard glance at Tony, Thor and Sam who stumbled in laughing loudly. They all froze seeing my glance and gulped. “Sorry… didn’t mean to wake your girlfriend Tasha…”
“You didn’t. You woke our daughter asshole.” Wanda snapped looking up at Tony who raised an eyebrow and stepped forward seeing y/n in our arms, a small shake still running through her small body. “You’re-you’re… sorry do we like her now?”
“We’ve always liked her Stark. Honestly I’m so annoyed with you guys. By the way, you’re lucky that y/n needs me right now. I’m close to snapping your neck. You are the reason she got shot yesterday the. you had the audacity to blame it on her?! Youre fucking sick. She’s a kid! She doesn’t deserve to be treated the way we have all been treating her.” I warned sending him one of my classic Natasha glares. The man visible gulped and took three steps back. “From now on, Wanda and I will be in charge of y/n. If you treat her badly, you will pay. She also won’t be going on missions until we agree she’s ready and old enough. Do you understand me?!” All three men nodded quickly before shooting out of the room. I took a deep breath before a soft whisper came from below me.
“Mama…?” I looked down to see y/n’s bright green eyes staring up at me. “Really…? No more missions…? No more… having to hurt people?”
Wanda squeezed her eyes shut, a sob choking out of her throat. “Momma??”
“No baby. No more missions or hurting others. From now on you will be a teenager. A regular kid who has two living mamas okay?” Y/n broke into a grin and flung her arms around both of our necks repeating thank you over and over. “I love you mama.” She said placing a kiss on my cheek. “I love you momma.” She said placing a soft kiss on Wanda’s cheek, making the brunette grin widely and attack her face with an abundance of kisses.
“And we love you to detka. With all our hearts.”
Number Neighbors Pt.31
Natasha Romanoff x Fem! Reader
Natasha Masterlist Series Masterlist
Word Count: 1.6k
Summary:  When you catch sight of the newest trend going around you know you’re all but bound to at least try it, it was harmless anyway. What could possibly stem from something so little?
----
Her eyes flash from concern to awe before she seems to realize how many eyes are focused on the two of you. Her face quickly settles back into its neutral state and you’d probably be a little offended if you weren’t also acutely aware of just how many people were watching you. Still, it didn’t stop you from staring at her like she wasn’t real.
Sure, you wanted to see her as soon as possible but you hadn’t been expecting to see her today. Unlike her, you were unable to hide the awe from your face and you swear her lips quirked up into a quick smirk at your expression but it’s gone before you can focus on it.
You don’t know if it’s from the crowd or her but your heart is pounding a million beats per minute and your face feels a million degrees hotter.
The people around you murmur with questions and the few reporters that were there have already snapped a hundred pictures that you’re sure they’re going to spin into nonsensical stories. Both you and Nat seem to get overwhelmed at the amount of eyes on you two, especially for a moment that was supposed to be so intimate.
You imagined this going a lot differently.
The suited man that grabbed you is one of many and you realize they were there protecting Nat. You almost snort at the idea but realization dawns on you; The important meeting at the courthouse. Nat was here to fight her case for the Avengers. You hadn’t had the chance to check for updates when you got home.
Before you can dwell too much on the outcome of the case, a gentle grip is guiding your body and you look down to see Nat’s hand around your wrist. Her skin was warm against yours. It makes you wonder if she was nervous at court. Most people would laugh at the idea but the more you’ve gotten to know her the more you can recognize what’s real confidence and what’s not. Even someone like Nat had her moments.
She leads you to a black SUV as more cameras flash and you realize it’s the same SUV that was tailing you earlier. It looks similar to the ones that followed you before your trip but when Nat opens the door to the car for you those thoughts are replaced with confusion.
She wanted you to go with her? Surely this was against protocol or something? Either way, none of the men in suits make a move to stop you and you weren’t going to pass up the opportunity to finally be with Natasha now that you knew who she was.
Any initial hesitation fades with one look in Nat’s reassuring eyes and you’re sliding into the backseat with the certainty that Nat would protect you no matter what. If not because she knew you, then because she was a hero for the public and it was her job to do so.
She slides into the backseat after you and exchanges a few words with a guy in the driver's seat apparently named ‘Happy’ and then you’re off to your destination.
The car ride is silent for a while, neither of you knowing how to start the conversation, and you’re trying not to gawk at her despite the urge to take her in after not seeing her for so long. Not to mention you’re seeing her in an entirely different light.
“It’s good to see you again” Her tone is oddly formal and when you gather the courage to look her in the eyes she seems more reserved than before. You’re confused and a little hurt, having assumed that once you two had more privacy she would be more open but it’s then that you realize she doesn’t know you know.
She’s talking to you as if you’re still the Y/n she met at the party. The oblivious, stupid, blind Y/n. She was holding herself back from showing more emotion than would be normal for you two.
There are so many things you want to say. Things you want her to say. You want to tell her that you know who she is in a coherent and obvious way but all that comes out of your mouth is-
“Nat?” You’re not asking for the Natasha Romanoff in front of you. You’re asking for your Nat. Asking for her to drop the facade and show you the person who’d become your best friend after a lot of begging and breaking down her carefully constructed walls.
She raises her eyebrows in a silent question but doesn’t catch on.
“Y/n.” You hadn’t had the chance to appreciate the way she said your name before but now it was everything. The slight rasp at the end of her voice, the way her lips moved, the slight tilt to her head as she studies you. You were going to spend every second you had with her soaking her in to the fullest.
Your eyebrows furrowed in frustration. For some reason, your brain refuses to cooperate with your mouth and finally spit out a confession. A part of you resists the urge to just pull her in for a kiss that would say so much more than words ever could but consent is important and you’re not even sure if she likes you back.
Nat seems to find humor in your pout, a small smile on her face as she reaches out to soothe the space between your brows. Only after the action does she seem to realize that’s not typical acquaintance behavior. She moves to retract her hand but you catch her wrist.
Her hands were so warm. Or maybe that was you. You couldn’t tell much anymore aside from the tingling where her fingers touched.
Even if she didn’t like you back. Even if all you had with her was this car ride, you were so happy you had gotten to know the real her. So happy to have fallen in love with her. You hope you were able to be a place of solace for her, and that she’s felt at least a quarter of the happiness and reprieve that she gave you.
Tentatively, you bring her hand to cup your cheek, relishing in the sparks that dance along your face at her touch. You can practically hear the somersaults your heart is doing in your chest.
You don’t even realize you’re crying until Nat’s playful smile shifts into concern once again.
“Y/n-” You don’t even give her the chance to finish, a wet laugh escaping your lips at the obscurity of your situation.
After all the pain and trouble and confusion you finally had her in your arms.
“Nat.” You say through a teary smile and you feel a bit bad that you’re getting her hand wet but you’re so overwhelmed that you can’t bring yourself to let go of her.
You have to wonder if you looked that same way when you realized who Nat was. The dots slowly connect behind her eyes before they light up with hopeful relief. Not to flatter yourself but you’re pretty sure her pupils dilate.
Despite her physically positive reaction, doubt must cloud her mind immediately because she retracts her hand from your face and subconsciously leans away from you.
Now it’s your turn to be concerned, unsure of how to stop the lies swirling in her head. Your brain finally decides to catch up to you in time to speak but instead, a laugh escapes and you clamp a hand over your mouth in surprise
“ Sorry!” it’s a half-assed apology and you both know it “I just can’t believe how stupid I was. I mean you were trying to tell me at that party and I was completely clueless!” You can’t help but laugh at your obliviousness and soon enough Nat cracks a small smile.
The serotonin that courses through your body is immediate and you have a feeling getting Nat to smile could become dangerously addictive. She seems to relax a little as she comes to the same realization you did. You’re not someone scary or intimidating or unfamiliar, you’re just you. The you Nat could vent to and laugh with. Her Y/n.
“In my defense, you totally could have told me who you were at that party!” You argue and she shakes her head, the smile still not leaving her face.
“I didn’t know if you’d believe me or not” It’s a valid excuse for anyone else, but for you it’s ridiculous and you have a feeling there’s more to it that she’s not ready to admit.
“I’d always believe you. '' Both of you know how true that statement is, and the playful atmosphere is dampened as the sentence reminds you of your month-long separation. It felt so natural to be with her that you forgot you hadn't spoken to her in a month. She seems to be thinking of the same thing as you as her smile slowly drops from her face once again.
The silence eats at you and you don’t know whether to apologize or just change the subject but before you can speak Nat beats you to it.
“I’m sorry” You go to tell her she doesn’t have to apologize but she fixes you with a look that shuts you up “I’m sorry, Y/n. I could’ve explained my situation to you better or called. I was just so lost for the first time in a while and I didn’t know how to tell you” You nod in understanding and let her continue “And there was no time for anything, I mean- I didn’t even get to say goodbye to some people-”
Sensing how emotional and terrifying this experience must have been for her, you place your hand over hers in a silent gesture of comfort and she shifts until your fingers are intertwined. You do your best to hide your blush but make no move to free your hand.
“I know you have every right to be mad at me but I hope you can hear me out”
You give her a reassuring smile. You’re surprised she would think you wouldn’t be willing to hear her out but you don’t dwell on it.
“Nat, I’m not mad- well not anymore at least. Of course I’ll hear you out, I’m not the type of person to be that petty.” She seems hesitant to accept the fact that you got over your anger a long time ago but she must read the sincerity in your body language because she smiles again and begins explaining the details of what went down a month ago.
valentine's day with matt
A/N: Happy Valentine's Day! This is a quick little headcanon/thoughts/scenario (?) I came up with. I’ve had a strong Daredevil fixation lately. But, anyway, this is just a silly little fun thing but I hope you enjoy it. I don’t know if it’s very good but it’s festive and sweet, I think :)
also apparently there is a limit to how many characters you can use in a bullet-point list so i apologize for the atrocious formatting, i can't figure out how to get around that dumbass rule with this text editor
Tumblr media
There is no doubt in my mind that Matt is an absolute romantic when he’s in a real, stable relationship
He doesn’t let himself into them but when he finds a person and dedicates himself fully, there’s no holding him back from worshipping his partner
Matt met you in the late spring, way past Valentine’s Day for that year, and frankly, he wasn’t sure if you’d want to stick around past the summertime
He got nervous when you two started getting serious and when he eventually let you in on his nighttime activities he was sure you would run for the hills
But you hadn’t
And the next thing you both knew… it was the season of love. Valentine’s Day. Your first Valentine’s Day together was just around the corner.
You truly didn’t expect much. Maybe a nice dinner and flowers—the expectation of flowers would even be pushing it. In your past relationships, Valentine’s Day hadn’t been anything. You’d try to get your partners to do thing, go out on dates with you, but no one ever seemed very interested in it all.
“It’s a holiday to sell things,” your last boyfriend had said to you when you’d asked him if he wanted to have a nice dinner at your favorite steakhouse. It was then that you had simply assumed men just didn’t do Valentine’s Day.
Matt, on the other hand, was stressing—seriously stressing—over February 14th.
The man would be practically making himself sick trying to plan out the day. But he was very good at hiding his stress. At least, from you. Foggy wasn’t spared from witnessing Matt’s panic.
"What about that new Italian place around the corner? Does it look nice?"
"Matt, do you think you’re maybe overthinking all of it?"
Matt would never admit if he was but…yes, he was.
You were unaware of it all and tried not to think too hard about the holiday. You had gotten Matt a small gift and were going to suggest having a night in with a nice dinner and a bottle or two of wine…
But then he caught you off guard.
You were out for lunch with him the day before Valentine’s Day. You two didn’t work too far from one another and so lunch dates (depending on your schedules, of course) had become a pretty regular part of your weekly routine.
It was about halfway through your lunchtime when, out of nowhere, completely unprompted, Matt said, "I made us reservations for tomorrow night at an Italian restaurant not too far from here."
Your jaw went slack and your heartbeat shot up. The concern that fell on Matt’s face told you he noticed.
"If… If that’s okay with you," he stammered, trying to walk back on his words. "If you don’t want to do anything for Valentine’s Day, I understand, I’m sure I can cancel—,"
"No!" Your outburst took both of you by surprise. You almost start laughing out of nervousness. "I mean, I’d love to. It sounds amazing, I was just…surprised. No guy I’ve been with has ever really wanted to do anything on Valentine’s Day."
Matt frowned. A deep, serious frown. "You’ve never gone out for Valentine’s Day?"
"Not really." You felt your cheeks go warm. "I’m very excited." Your heartbeat hadn’t settled since he mentioned dinner plans.
The next day, you were giddy. You had stayed over at Matt’s place and decided to wake up early to make him a nice breakfast. He was speechless. You two would exchange "Happy Valentine’s Day" before swapping sweet kisses and going your separate ways for the day.
You’d assume you wouldn’t hear from Matt again until dinner time but then a giant — giant — bouquet of roses was delivered to your office. You were stunned. As were your coworkers. And then the flowers made you hopelessly tear up.
It was already the best Valentine’s Day you’ve ever had and you still had dinner to look forward to.
After work, you returned to your apartment and freshened up.
You were quite nervous for some reason. It didn’t make sense. You’d been going out with Matt for almost a year. You two had been on numerous dates. Hell — you two slept together regularly. But this? Valentine’s Day dinner? This was what was making you all jittery?
It was a mix between never really knowing what to expect for Valentine’s Day and wanting everything to go perfectly.
Matt was patiently waiting for you outside the restaurant when you arrived. You saw a smirk creep its way onto his lips, no doubt sensing your presence.
"Hi, honey," you said as you approached and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "You made quite the ruckus at my office today with that garden of flowers you sent."
Matt chuckled. "Were they okay? I kind of had to trust the florist’s opinion and he could’ve scammed me for all I know."
You laughed. "They’re the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen."
"You clearly haven’t looked in the mirror lately."
"Matthew Murdock, you’re silly."
The restaurant he had chosen was stunning. Very fancy, very chic. A nice modern, clearly high-end, Italian restaurant. You gasped when you saw the array of artistic decor. It was just all so…romantic.
"Is it… Do you like it? Is this okay? I also had to trust Foggy for advice on this place—,"
"It’s wonderful, Matt. Everything is so wonderful."
He took your elbow and gave it a squeeze.
The hostess then escorted you two to your table, Matt continued holding onto your elbow and you had to keep yourself from laughing. No doubt he had already mapped out the place in his head.
Your table was in the back of the establishment, kind of hidden and private. You wondered if Matt had dropped some extra money to get something so intimate. You were tearing up at the thought.
"Are you okay?" Matt asked after you two took your seats.
"You make me feel so special."
Wordlessly, Matt found your hand and kissed the back of it. It was almost silly but it made your heart skip a beat. Seriously, you felt like a teenager on a first date.
You diverted your attention to the menu. You quickly realized Matt had the same one as you — a.k.a. a menu he couldn’t exactly read. It looked like Matt came to the same realization as you when he picked it up.
"Oh, should I see if they—,"
Matt shook his head. "Read it to me?" He leaned back in his seat, waiting, a little cocky or proud of himself.
You blushed. "Sure, I think I can manage that."
Dinner went by very nicely. You raved about the food and Matt looked relieved that you enjoyed it. You two even split a dessert. Matt "accidentally" got whipped cream on your cheek, which he just had to clean up himself. You teased him it was just a ploy to get close to you and he didn’t deny it.
Afterward, you two walked arm and arm back to his place. The night was peaceful and lovely and…perfect.
"I have a gift to give you later," you said, breaking the silence.
"Oh, yeah?"
"Mhm," you sighed. "Well, maybe I have a couple of gifts."
"Oh?" Matt smirked.
"I gotta thank my lovely boyfriend properly. This was the best Valentine’s Day," you admitted.
Matt stopped on the sidewalk. The streets were quiet and empty. His arm untangled from yours, his hands grinding your waist with ease. "It’s not over yet," Matt said in a hushed tone. "Besides, I might have a couple of gifts for you as well."
And then he kissed you deeply. The world around you felt like it had stopped.
"Happy Valentine’s Day, sweetheart."
"Happy Valentine’s Day, honey."
this love came back to me (Wanda Maximoff x reader)
Description: several months after you and Wanda originally broke up, a chance encounter with her at the grocery store has all your old feelings rushing back to you and makes you wonder why you ended things in the first place
Tumblr media
A/N: the idea for this fic came from one of the songs off of 1989 tv. I haven't written for anybody from the mcu (or in general) in so long omfg. Also Wanda's a super fucking hottie btw. but you guys already knew that
Warnings: exs to lovers (is that a thing? It is now), fluff, kind of hurt/comfort, mentions of mental health issues, mentions of insecurity/self depreciation, mentions of past heartbreak, happy ending (because y'all really deserve it)
Tumblr media
The day began just like any other. You'd woken up to find you were on your last roll of toilet paper, you didn't have anymore hand soap, and you were running out of milk.
"Guess I'd better make a trip to the grocery store," you said to yourself while you slipped on your shoes and grabbed your keys.
You got there to find it practically empty, courtesy of making a trip that wasn't during the weekend, when it was slam packed.
As you browsed the aisles, you couldn't help but notice a young woman around your age shopping in the same area as you. While she looked awfully familiar, you decided to brush it off. It was most likely just your mind playing tricks on you, like it usually did.
However, when you saw her again a couple aisles down, you realized that maybe you did know her. You were sure you recognized her from somewhere, but where exactly was a difficult place to put your finger on.
It was when you finally were able to see her face that you recognized her to be Wanda, your ex girlfriend. She looked great, better than you remembered.
This made you self conscious and overly aware of the fact you were wearing a hoodie and sweatpants while she was all dolled up in her red blouse and dark blue skinny jeans, not to mention the makeup she had on her face.
It made you think about how whenever you needed to go shopping and she would offer to go with you, you'd have to wait at least thirty minutes for her to find a cute outfit and do her makeup (or at least put on some mascara and lip gloss, if you didn't have the time to wait for her) before she was ready to go.
It was quite endearing, now that you were thinking back on it, but you distinctively remembered back then how frustrated you would get, having to wait. It hurt your heart to think about how gorgeous she would look while all you could do was grumble about leaving later than you'd originally wanted.
Before you could think about whether or not approaching her would be a good idea, she looked your way, a warm smile gracing her features. God, she looked pretty than you remembered. "Hey, you." Wanda called out softly, a playful look in her eyes.
"Uh, hey." You responded with lamely, not really knowing what to think. Did she hate you now? I mean, the breakup hadn't gone poorly, and it was mutual, but you still couldn't help wondering what she thought of you.
"Long time, no see." She walked over to where you were standing, a grocery basket tucked under her arm. "I missed you."
You couldn't believe what you were hearing. She missed you?
"Yeah, same." You inwardly cringe at just how uninterested you must sound, but then again, how could you express your feelings for her properly without her getting upset or wanting to leave?
"So, um..." You fidgeted, looking everywhere but her as you tried to pluck up the courage to ask that one simple question that could put you on a path back into her arms.
You decided to just bite the bullet and get on with it. After all, the worst she could do was say no. "Do you... do you wanna maybe get coffee later? Or something?"
Her face practically lit up with joy. "Sure, I'd love to," she cheerfully answered, a large smile encompassing the lower half of her face.
You tried not to seem too eager when you responded. "Great! I mean, good, that's good that you wanna do that with me."
Laughing, she slipped her hand into yours. "Just lemme pay for this real quick, then lunch is on me. We've got a lot of catching up to do."
You drew a snowflake on the window with the condensation. Outside the world was blurred by the flurry of snowflakes from the ongoing storm. The golden hue of the Christmas tree lights reflected onto the window reminding you of the cozy date night you had planned with your boyfriend Steve.
Your boyfriend, Steve…
You couldn’t stop the smile that appeared on your face at the words. A year ago you spent the holidays alone while on a mission in Vienna. Now, you were sitting on a white linen couch, snuggled in by a plush red and black flannel pajama set Steve had bought you to match his own.
Speaking of Steve, you turned away from the winter wonderland to look at your boyfriend through the doorway of the kitchen. You could only catch glimpses of him here and there. He was hard at work preparing two mugs of hot chocolate he promised were going to be the best you’d ever had.
They were made by him, so you knew they would be.
“ It’s almost ready! Did you choose a movie yet?” Steve asked, looking over at you. A fond smile adorned his features when he realized you were already looking at him. You perked up at the question, realizing you had forgotten tonight’s movie selection was up to you.
“ No, I’ll get right on that!” You responded, sliding off the couch down to the pile of blankets and pillows on the floor. You grabbed the television remote and browsed through the various rows of movies and shows before deciding on Home Alone. It was the first holiday movie you ever watched with Steve years ago, and it seemed fitting to watch it again now that your relationship was starting anew.
“ Here, take this one. I added extra marshmallows to yours,” Steve said handing you a snowman-shaped mug before turning off the main light in the living room. The room was now only illuminated by the amber lights on the Christmas tree and the flickering luminescence of the television. The absence of light set the mood, making the room more inviting.
You took in the rich cocoa scent as you hugged the mug in your hands. There were little marshmallows and an assortment of red and green sprinkles adorning the whipped cream on top. You eagerly tasted the hot chocolate, the drink instantly melting on your tongue with a velvety smoothness.
Steve was right. No other hot chocolate had come close to this one.
Steve lowered himself to take a seat, motioning you over to sit between his legs. You maneuvered your way over, snuggling into his chest getting enveloped by the smoky cedarwood scent of his cologne.
“ How is it?” He asked, lifting the Santa-shaped mug in his hand to his lips and taking a sip of the chocolatey goodness. You twisted your body to face him, “ It’s amazing. Seriously, you might have to make this every movie night.” He laughed sheepishly at your words, “Anything for you, sweetheart.” You swore if he kept looking at you like that you would melt like putty in his arms.
You took a second to really look at your boyfriend. Getting a second chance with the love of your life doesn’t happen for everyone. After finding each other on that rainy night in Poland you spent months reconnecting before going out on a date again. You were nervous at first, not knowing how things would play out. After all, no amount of love in the world could keep together two people who weren’t meant to be.
However, on that first date night, it felt like no time had passed between you. Things fell into place perfectly and after a few dates, you both felt ready to start over again. This time you promised to communicate better with each other and make sure things like work didn’t get in the way of what you two have.
“ What is it? Did I get some chocolate on my face?” Steve licked his lips hoping to get whatever chocolatey remnants were on his face.
“ Yeah, let me get it,” you replied, pulling Steve closer to you by the collar of his shirt and kissing him deeply. Steve kissed you back, putting his mug down beside him to hold your face gently in his hands. You put your mug down too, pressing both of your hands softly to his chest.
His lips were just as sweet as the hot chocolate—maybe even sweeter. This caused you to realize there was something better than hot chocolate.
Steve’s hot chocolate kisses.
Enjoy!
Draw the cat eye, sharp enough to kill a man
You did some bad things, but I'm the worst of them
Sometimes I wonder which one will be your last lie
They say looks can kill and I might try
I don't dress for women
I don't dress for men
Lately I've been dressing for revenge
-
It’s the pity on her face that makes you want to claw her eyes out, or maybe the happy family photo sitting on her desk staring and taunting you with their stupid smiling faces. Each of her children smiled like nothing was wrong in the world, like they didn’t have to worry about earning their way or surviving the day.
Dr. Aquinos children would never know pain.
But that was a given, they weren’t bought and sold off. They weren’t tortured and abused for years only to be torn out when Natasha fucking Romanoff decides to free everyone from that chain and force them into the real world.
Did it make you pathetic to say you missed it?
In the red room you had a cot, a meal at least once a day and training. Out here you were no one. No trace of you existed. No ids, or photos, no friends or family. You were nothing.
Even ghosts had more than you at this point.
“You know it’s common to feel this way about it? That longing to have it back? It’s the pain and the change, you feel like you have nothing right now but I can assure you that’s not true.”
You say nothing.
“Have you given any thought to our last session?” The therapist asks, voice saccharine amount of sweet that tells you she knows your looking for a fight today and she won’t be giving into it. You hated that she knew you would try that, you hated these sessions all together.
“Yes.” Lie. And judging by the quirk in her smile she knows it too.
“I think it’s extremely important for you in this next step, to get rid of the suit. What was it they called you?” You don’t reply for a minute, your own little form of rebellion, but she doesn’t let you get away with it for long. “The…. Cobra?”
“The. Viper.” You bite out, grinding your teeth together and fisting your hands at your side. “The Red Viper to be exact.”
“Can you explain to me why it is you got that name? I mean your other counter parts all follow a …..widow theme….. but you don’t?”
“It just….. happened that way.” You lie. “How much longer do we have?”
Why did she not have a clock?
“Ah. So the story has something to do with Bucky Barnes.” She smiles and you fight back the sneer.
“Nope.”
“You always ask for the time when memories of him are brought up.”
Not. True. You don’t bother arguing because that might prove her point.
“Can you recall what he looked like?”
A flash of ice blue crosses your mind, his eyes. Followed by roses and ballet slippers. A small opening to freedom right there in your grasp, his smiling face….. replaced by that of betrayal, the pain and torture you suffered for weeks after because he-
“No.” You lie. “I only knew him as the winter soldier.”
“Have you tried reaching out?”
“No. And I never will.” Not until you were able to kill him, get your revenge.
Your therapist didn’t know about your revenge list though,she would have you imprisoned for it. The list of names of every mastermind and agent that did you wrong, and at the very end of the list was the one person you actually managed to trick you, the one person you gave everything you had left to.
Bucky Barnes would be the last person you killed in this life, and you would make sure to enjoy every second of it.
-
It’s not everyday they pull you from your training program and load you into a transportation vehicle, and you don’t know whether to be scared or excited by the change in routine.
You decide on excitement, because a widow is never. Ever. Scared.
The keepers transporting you all avoid eye contact and you bite back the smirk, knowing that you installed that fear when you bit the thumb off the last guard that tried to touch you inappropriately. You might be hydras toy but you were not a plaything for these half wits.
“Your mission will be in direct partnership with the Winter Soldat.” The agent in front of you explains, watching you load up your widow uniform with hidden weapons “there’s a list of names that needs to be taken care of, and it might take a minute so they are pairing you both. They want no mistakes, only the best.”
“No traces no trails. No chances.” You answer, already having it memorized, biting down on your tongue when you remember the poor girl you left as a witness to your last mission.
Hydra never found out, but her scared scream when she caught you killing her father will haunt you.
You wondered if you might have had someone to scream over at one point.
“He won’t speak to you so don’t bother.” The agent grunts as the vehicle comes to a stop and he slams his fist on the side to let them know it’s safe to open the doors.
They all cast you another look as you try not to roll your eyes at the drama. If you truly wanted out of this vehicle you could slaughter them all, you just knew that hydra would track you down no matter what so what was the point?
They lead you down hundreds of gray halls, each getting darker than the last and the smell of mold and desperation heightened with each step. Finally at the very last cell door they all raise their weapons and slide it open, muttering something in Russian before a figure emerges.
The glint of his arm catches on the shit light above you first, and then he is there, glowering and confused in the same go.
“Soldat. This is the widow.” His mentor speaks in Russian, gesturing to you which makes the soldier give you one look. That’s it. One brief look of disdain and he goes back to looking at the mentor like you weren’t even there.
This mission is going to go well.
-
“You’re making progress Bucky.” Dr. Raynor hums, her eyes glinting as she watches him over the pad of paper she hasn’t scribbled on in the past hour. He likes to think that it’s a good sign, but he also tries not to get into his own head about it. “But I’d like to go a little deeper if you’ll let me.”
“Don’t really have a choice doc.” He mutters, but his tone lacks the usual bite.
“Funny. Have you slept in a bed recently?”
“I’ve made it to at least 3 hours of sleep in my bed.” He nods, not mentioning he thought the laundry detergent smelled like your shampoo.
“You bought any home decorations? Anything at all?”
“There’s a welcome mat by the front door.”
“Inside or outside?”
“…..inside.” He wasn’t brave enough to put it out in the hall yet.
“I just want a house that has a welcome mat and that cookie smell. Something to call home.” Those were your words, whispered to him the night before the soldier…..
“Tell me what you have been up to lately.”
“Lunches with Yori….missions with Sam…. And I’ve been…. Trying to find someone.”
“Someone from your time as the soldier?”
“Yes.” His throat is tight and he might throw up.
“For revenge?”
“No…. Well she might want revenge…… I just want her.” He admits.
Dr. Raynors eyebrows shoot up, and she tries to keep neutral as she asks the next question. “The viper then?”
“She didn’t like that name.”
“How did she get it?”
“Me.”
“And what did you call her if she didn’t like the name?”
“Flower.”
I don't start it but I can tell you how it ends
Don't get sad, get even
So on the weekends
I don't dress for friends
Lately I've been dressing for revenge
The roof of the bagel shop on the stupid block you were on was probably the worst spot to be.
Best, if you’re focusing on the fact that it’s the perfect hideout for the sniper gun you are aiming and the fact that you’re able to lay at a slant so your legs don’t falls asleep while you focus.
Terrible for the fact that you could smell the pizza shop next door perfectly, and your stomach was beginning to rumble in hunger.
But you had to focus, your target was supposed to be in his apartment right now, Viktor Aubrel, the man that sold you in the first place.
Your intel told you he should have been home an hour ago and yet you were still waiting in the winter air that sent a shiver up your spine, too focused on the aim to realize the two figures now on the roof.
“Are the widows that oblivious now?” A deep voice laughs causing you to whirl, knife out as you spot none other than the winter soldier and the new captain america, both watching you.
It was the captain that taunted you, a sneer making its way into your lips as you prepare yourself to launch. The winter soldier extends a hand out, blocking the captain with a skeptical look.
“Sam. A little forewarning, she doesn’t fight like the others.” He mumbles and you all but hiss, not giving either of them a moment before you’re launching at them.
They track your movements well, both standing to fight as you run across the roof, jumping up on the ledge to give you the upper advantage and launch yourself at them. Starting with the easier target, the man with the shield. Wrapping your arms around his neck and spinning your body until you have his weight thrown in the air. He manages to catch himself standing but you’re ahead of the game, jumping so your feet are planted on his chest and shoving him off the roof right as the winter soldier gets to you.
“I don’t want to do this.” He mutters and you hiss again, lunging with a knife out, slashing expertly over and over as he dodges as much as he can. “You don’t need to do this.”
The knife catches in the elbow of his metal arm and his flesh hand comes up to grab your wrist so you twist, kicking his knee down and flick another knife from your uniform.
“I want to.” You mutter in Russian, voice dripping with disdain as you raise the knife and bring it down. Only to get blasted across the roof.
The air leaves your lungs as you skid across the concrete of the roof, splayed out staring at the sky and blinking away the pain.
“She’s quicker than the rest.” Captain America huffs, helping the soldier up.
“A lethal experiment. Taking a trained widow and injecting her with mutated blood of some guy named Logan Howlett.”
“Where does the viper come from?”
“Her knives are all laced with venom and poisons. One touch to your skin and it doesn’t matter if it was a fatal wound or not. You’re out.” You hear them both approach, pretending to be passed out before they get close enough and you can kick the soldier in the stomach. He catches your foot, twisting so your body would have to twist with it or break, but you’re already pulling out a knife and launching it at the other.
A shout of warning leaves the soldier's lips as the knife nearly gets his partner's thigh, you take this weakness and twist until you are wrapped around him and launching you both across the roof. But he is already working his way out, twisting so you slam into the roof once more, his metal arm on your throat holding you down as you claw at it.
Panic attacks your body, scratching at the metal as the captain comes into view.
“Stop. We can help you.” The man sighs.
“Y/n.” The soldier mumbles, eyes pleading. “Let us help-“
Your foot bends to smash into his jaw and send him sprawling back.
“That’s. Not. My. Name.” Your voice is scratchy from the choking and it hurts to talk, but you don’t have time since you’re already dashing to clear the roof.
But the captain throws his shield and hits your ankle sending you falling until Bucky catches you and twists you with his metal arm so your back was to his chest and he can hold you.
“It is. You told me so yourself. Remember?”
“I wanna see my life before all this. I want to see my family and tell them I’m alive. My name was y/n. I found my file and I just-“
You were disgusted that you ever told him such things.
“LET GO!”
“We can help with your list.” It’s the caption saying this, his face holding pity. “We can’t kill but we can help take them down. If you’re willing.”
“They all deserve to die!” The one holding you counted in that.
“I’m not arguing that. But I am setting boundaries. Justice by more death is not the way to do this.” The man tries to ease, attempting a smile. “I’m Sam. You already know Buck-“
“Let me go!”
“We’re proposing a partnership. We help you take them down, get them arrested and you don’t kill any of them.”
“Right. And I get thrown in a cell right after I’m assuming.” You sneer, trying not to focus on the scent of hazel and coffee coating your senses from the soldier.
“You will be pardoned. You had no choice back then and we are giving you one now. Pardoned.”
“And what do you mean by taking them down?” What choice did you have?
It had been a week with the soldier when he finally showed a small amount of emotion. Insane.
You had been huddled in the corner of the abandoned hotel you made camp in, keeping close to yourself for warmth as he pretended to sleep by the wall. You knew he wasn’t actually asleep, not trusting enough to do so. And you don’t know when he does get sleep, all you know is you fight to the last possible moment your eyelids can stay open and you don’t sleep long.
The exhaustion and the cold were beginning to wear you down, a week in and you had yet to kill a single person on this list because the Soldat refused to listen to how you can manage it. With him it’s all silent and watching, your missions were usually more lively. You wore disguises and set traps. Hydra liked sending messages and it’s what you did.
They want a quick and efficient widow? They send Belova. They want a widow that draws attention to their dangers? A prize possession? They send you.
Which is why this entire mission is so weird. Why send you if- before you can finish your thought you are being pelted with a warm jacket, the Soldat glaring at you.
“Your teeth chattering is keeping me up.” He mutters in Russian, sitting up and checking all his weapons.
“As if you sleep.” You reply back in Russian, rolling your eyes. His eyes flick to you in surprise for just a second before he trains them again, watching the window in the opposite corner. “What’s your name?”
“Soldat.”
“What’s your real name?”
“I….. should the viper be asking questions?” He snaps, glaring once more before you roll your eyes and stand up. He watches your every move as you toss his jacket back and cross the room. “Where are you going?”
“To be a viper.” You sneer back, enjoying the way the Russian makes the words bite out more.
He stands up quickly when you move to climb out the window but you send him a glare and descend quickly, making sure he does not follow.
When you get back three hours later, he is standing in the center of the room with his arms crossed and a glare on his features.
You simply walk past him to grab your list, crossing off the first name. “Can we get an actual hotel this time? I need to shower some of this blood off.”
As you move to walk past him his arm shoots out to grab you, pain erupting as he bends your neck to look at him. You would allow this, because is his anger is on you then he won’t look into the 2 little children you helped vanish tonight after you killed their father.
“You do not make moves without me. Understood?”
“Yes Soldat.” You try to nod before he lets go.
“Viper.” He hisses. And you would allow it, because if anyone knew what you had done you would be killed.
-
The three of you ended up in a warehouse not too far away from the roof you had been scouting on, bucky carrying your bag of weapons on his shoulder as he tried not to look at you while Sam paced back and forth.
You sat on a fallen beam, seeming bored and uninterested as you picked at your nails. But Bucky knew that was your game, to let the world think you were a valid assassin with little to no care.
But he knew you cared, he knew how much effort you had put into saving kids back then. You had always been so warm without even realizing it.
But maybe that all changed, after it….. all happened he hadn’t heard about you again and after he was freed by Steve he couldn't seem to find any of the children you had saved.
“What happened to them?” He finds himself asking, his chest pinching at the sight of you. His flower. But that look in your eyes, the betrayal and anger…..
“The first three on my list? I dumped their bodies in the river.” You smile, turning your glare to Sam. “How about that pardon now?”
“The kids. The ones that you-“ you stand before he can finish his sentence , both him and Sam preparing for a fight as you seem to try and ease yourself.
“What kids?” Sam snaps, anger and protectiveness rolling off of him. “Did you hurt-“
“No. She used to smuggle them out.” Bucky explains. “When she got missions if there was a kid in the family she would pretend to kill them, and help the kid out.”
“I thought hydra confirmed kills by bodies.”
“Not when you’re the best.” You smile, that vapid venomous smile that made Bucky's stomach churn. “And Soldat is right. I used to smuggle the kids out.”
His chest hurts at the name you use, but he assumes that it’s fair. “Where are they now?”
He wants you to look at him, to tell him they are all safe and that he didn’t ruin everything. But you keep your eyes trained away, pain flashing through your features as you explain. “After you…. Told them….. they got the names and locations from me and sent out the shadow widow.”
“Kaltain Amerie.” Sam nods, recognizing the name. She was married to a fancy rich guy now, had been the one Yelena found.
“She took care of what I couldn’t. She did the job.” You nod, hands fisting at your sides as the words clang into Bucky. “And I was punished for my failure.”
“And the missions you got after they caught you?” Sam asks, casting a brief look to bucky at the word caught.
“I had a partner, and they always made sure I did my job.” Fuck.
He was going to puke, how many kids had…..
“You mentioned an alliance. Not an interrogation.” You snap, obviously uncomfortable. “And if you want to revoke my pardon because of-“
“I don’t.” Sam says gently, nodding. “And I’m sorry that it happened.”
“I’m not.” It was a lie and Bucky could taste it. Anything to keep both of them away, that wall you built up when he first met you.
“Okay. The name on your list. Let’s talk about how to get him.” Bucky changes direction, wanting to get you to ease again, not liking the pain in your eyes.
You continue to avoid looking in his direction, and he continues to stare at only you.
She needed cold hard proof so I gave her some
She had the envelope, where you think she got it from?
Now she gets the house, gets the kids, gets the pride
Picture me thick as thieves with your ex-wife
And she looks so pretty
Driving in your Benz
Lately she's been dressing for revenge
It’s a month into the mission when the Soldat tells you his name.
Gone were the days of sleeping on opposite sides of the room, now you both shared a bed. Gone were the days of him not sleeping, and he was now the one that fell asleep first.
Tonight being one of those nights, with you sitting against the headboard of the hotel bed, his forehead pressed into your thigh as he falls asleep slowly, letting you play with his hair as you review footage of your next name. The third on the list.
“My name….” He mutters, this time in English which still shocks you everytime he does. “It’s Bucky.”
“Bucky?” It tastes like vanilla on your tongue, your chest lightening as you whisper it a couple more times. “I like it.”
“What’s yours?”
“My file…. My file says Y/n.” You whisper back and he tilts his head up to look at you.
“You don’t seem to like it.”
“I….. it just doesn’t feel real.” You admit. “It feels wrong for me to use it.”
“I think it’s a wonderful name. It suits you well but… I think you’re my flower.” He murmurs back, moving to press his forehead into your thigh once more and finally lets sleep claim him.
The next morning you both work in tandem, cleaning weapons, he gives you time to make sure that your knives are still potent with venom as you try to come up with a plan to get the 5 year old girl out of the country without the soldier knowing.
But the betrayal of it hurts your chest, watching him work around you as a smooth unit. A team. That’s what you had become.
“Ready?” He asks in Russian, coming up to fix the hair that had fallen out of your braid, using his flesh hand to push it behind your ear as his thumb traces your jaw.
“Always. You?”
“With you my little flower? Always.”
-
It was ironic the way you and the Soldat still worked in tandem, moving with an effortless grace.
Sam, the captain, watches with wide eyes as you both move around each other.
“Do we have-“
“Yes we have enough intel.” You snap, closing the camera footage the second you spot the young boy running down the hall of the mansion when both him and his mom get home. The pain in your chest could be blamed on the image, and or the stupid soldier standing too close to you. “I can smell your breath.”
“He ate a cheeseburger for lunch again?” Sam chuckles and you stand straight, giving him wide eyes as the Soldat rolls his own. “You know you can’t get in trouble for calling him an idiot, right?”
“I’m aware.” Your words come out clipped and you try not to shudder at the way Sam snickers, catching your lie.
“Say it.”
“Say what?”
“Call Barnes a dumbass.”
“I won’t speak to the Soldat.” You reply, moving to clean your knives.
“Oh come on. Try it. It helps me..” sam laughs, sitting across from you at the kitchen counter as the Soldat shuffles closer to help you clean the knives. You could feel the warmth radiating off of him.
“You….. are a dumbass.” You squeak out, not looking at him. You hear him snort behind you and he reaches across to grab another knife. You roll your eyes at the way he presses his body next to yours.
“That was lame. Try again.” Sam laughs.
“Fine. You’re a DUMBASS!” You snap out, watching both their eyes widen before laughs break out and they start cracking up.
You feel your stiff spine loosen a little, the anxiety easing as you start laughing as well, all three of you cackling. His flesh hand finds its way to your lower back to keep you stable as you both drop the knives to laugh. And finally, after three weeks of working with them you drop the angry front, and give in to their warmth even though everything in you screams to not fall for it.
-
“Is this….. proper mission food?” You ask from the spot you had taken at the window, watching Bucky and Sam come in with pizza boxes and beer in their hands, both laughing at each other .
Bucky had, sort of tripped up on the stairs which sent Sam in a spiral of making fun of him, but the second they laid eyes on you that humor fell out the window, both going quiet.
“You don’t think pizza and beer are good?” Sam asks, offended. “This is the best combo.”
“Is it…. Allowed?” You ask again and Bucky feels that pang in his chest before he passes the box to you and opens it smoothly.
“You get the first slice pick.” He offers and Sam gasps at the counter.
“That….. oh that’s just cruel to me.”
“It’s an honor to pick the first slice then?” You quirk your eyebrow, humor written on your face, the spark in your eyes setting him on fire. “This is a New York custom?”
“Oh indeed.” He smiles, pushing the box closer to you. “It would be a great dishonor to refuse this.”
There is a second of discomfort, he watches you contemplate it before you reach for a slice, grabbing the largest slice and raising your eyebrows as you wait to see their reactions.
“Perfect choice!” Sam grunts, reaching around you to grab another slice.
“I was going to choose that one.” Bucky smiles, watching you bite it immediately then stick out your tongue at him before taking up a spot on the couch as both of them find their own seats in the living room. You seem tense still, obviously not used to this sort of freedom anymore and his lungs constrict at the thought that this was caused by him.
Back then you had been so… warm and open. Even as an agent you melted the ice exterior the soldier had around him. And through the muddled haze of his memory every memory attached to you was always crystal clear, like a flame in the fog.
“So…. you guys knew each other back when he was the Winter Soldier?” Sam asks, popping the lid off of a beer with ease, he leans forward on his knees and pretends to be more interested in the pizza box. Making it seem like he was an open book, a comforting thing.
“Yeah, we had a long list of enemies that they wanted us to deal with.” You answer, looking to the window rather than either of them.
“It seems like it went wrong…”
“It went fine.” Bucky is quick to snap.
“It was fine. We made it through half the list, before Hydra had to get involved.” You snap as well moving to set the rest of your slice on the plate left on the table for you. “I made a mistake.”
“It wasn’t-” Bucky goes to argue, chest tight.
“I let emotions muddle my task.” You explain to Sam. “I got too attached and ruined it. And then I got caught smuggling the kids out- I was further reported for my behavior and handled accordingly.”
“Hey, this isn’t Hydra.” Sam tries to ease you. “I think what you did was very noble and-”
“All I did was give kids hope where it didn’t belong.” You sneer. “I will never allow myself that weakness again.”
You cast Bucky a glare, his palms sweating and chest blistering as he watches you disappear into the bathroom and the shower running a second later.
Sam continues watching Bucky, eyebrows pinched together. “You reported it?”
“I… as much as I broke away at that time I was still under the soldiers spell.” Bucky admits, gulping down half the beer in his hand. “I…. I had sent in a mission report. Well I had to send it in and I had caught her plan a little bit before that.”
“I’m sorry that happened, Buck.”
“I am too.” He sighs. “I got rewarded and she… well they broke her.”
She don't start it, but she can tell you how it ends
Don't get sad, get even
So on the weekends
“You need to be careful in the upper levels.” He warns, keeping his flesh hand on the small of your back as you both move to start scaling the side of the house.
“I know.” You growl out, keeping your voice low as his eyebrows pinch in frustration. “Don’t be a worry wart.”
“Stick to my side.”
“The job is quicker if I take care of the kids.” You mumble, leaning up to kiss his cheek lightly, the closest you had ever gotten to actually kissing him, no matter how much you wanted to. Three months with him and you were hopelessly in love.
“Fine.” He grunts out, his Russian sharp. He nods once before moving to his starting point, checking that you had begun scaling the wall to the kids room before heading in to handle the parents. But you had been so caught up in Bucky that you didn’t check to make sure both the children were asleep.
The girl screamed first, followed by the boy and you began rushing to ease their worries, kneeling by them and trying to swipe the tears away. “No no. Easy my little ones. It’s okay. I just need you to listen-”
But the boy screams again, this time at something behind you which makes you whirl to find Bucky in the frame of the door, watching intently with blood on his arm.
“No! Please!” You beg, up on your feet and shoving yourself in front of the children as he cocks his head to the side. “Please.”
“Move.” He orders, raising his gun. It seems he’s already assessed the weakness and was willing to handle the problem. “Now.”
“No!” You hadn’t even realized that tears were falling down your face until you could taste the salt, moving forward to grab his gun. “Please!”
“The mission-”
“They are children.” Both of you were speaking Russian, which seemed to be scaring the kids even more as they wailed, and you turned to ease them again. They dash into your arms, holding you tight as they sob. You would die before letting anything happen to them.
When you turn to see him again you see that he has lowered the gun and is merely staring at you, something sparking in his eyes.
You wait for the blow, but it never comes. Instead he nods his head and moves to pick up the boy. He helps you get them out, aboard a ship and hidden from Hydra. When you make it back to the hotel you pace a bit, waiting for him to finish you off.
But he merely stands in the center of the room, watching you closely.
“I’m sorry.” You sob, hand on your chest as you turn to him finally. “I failed the mission and-”
He moves forward in three easy strides, his hands grasping your jaw to bring you up into a searing kiss, arms wrapping around you tightly as he lifts you off the ground to keep you close. And all anxieties peel away, as he lifts his hand to undo your suit. Giving yourself to the soldier that night, and once you were done you stay huddled together, whispering your dreams of the past and future.
And for once you felt like…. You were home.
The next morning tensions were gone, and you seemed to have forgotten about the night before. Or at least you were pretending to, and Bucky didn’t know if he should be happy or angry at the fact.
You had combed through all the footage of the target, piling it all into a folder and he had sent the flash drive to the people needed that would be able to get him arrested. And after that had been sent you had sent out another envelope to his wife, with proof of an affair so she would be able to divorce him.
And just like that another name was taken off your list, and Bucky tried not to feel the pressure at the fact that he was sure you would be gone the second the list was done. And he wouldn’t have an excuse to see you anymore.
He’s lucky Sam went along with this plan in the first place.
“Where is Sam?” You ask from your spot at the counter, legs crossed as you play with one of your knives, watching him closely where he sits on the couch.
“He went to go check on his sister and her kids.” He answers, looking up to you. “They are really close.”
“That’s nice.” You hum, dropping the knife out of boredom. “What comes next?”
“You got another name?”
“Are we allowed to start without Sam?” You ask, eyebrows pinching together.
“Yes. We can. Your list?”
“Front pocket of my duffel.” You hum out, something having caught your attention. He reaches for the bag and checks for the list as you shuffle closer to his open laptop. For a second he hears you hesitate, but he had already made it clear that you had access to anything so he nods and lets you look as he finds the paper you wrote the list on.
His eyes skim across the names, landing on the very last name as his heart stops. ‘Bucky Barnes’ , and no matter how many times you blink the name does not disappear. Why did you let him see this? Was this a trap set?
He whirls, only to find you staring at the screen unblinking. “Flower?”
Your head snaps to glare at him as he shuffles closer, shoving your list in his pocket and looking at what had caught your attention. He finds an old sitcom, a scene with a mother curled up with her kids and reading them a bedtime story.
“You never told me why.” He mutters, sitting on the couch with you on the floor staring at the screen again.
“Why what?”
“Why did you risk your life for all those kids?”
“Because they… because no one fought for me back then.” You admit, turning to look at him. “What is this show?”
“Full house. I don’t know, Steve put it on my list.”
“Your list?” You ask and he nods.
“Things to catch up on.” He smiles. “Like the star wars series.”
“The what?” He blinks slowly at your question, purely shocked.
Three hours later you are both sprawled out on the couch, pillows and blankets thrown about with snacks everywhere. Bucky had dragged you out to the store, buying tons of snacks that you had never tried before and before you knew it the apartment cupboards were packed with snacks and you were preparing to see the first star wars.
“Should we… have brought all this to the mission base?”
“The what?” He laughs, leaning forward to snatch a gummy worm from the bag you were holding.
“The… this apartment. Are we allowed to use it for this?”
“It’s my apartment.” He shrugs, and you blink slowly.
“It’s empty though.”
“I have a couch!” He scoffs. “And a tv!”
“No bed, no plushy towels or…. This is your home?” You didn’t know why this upset you. “You live like this?”
You want to kill him. You want to kill him. Why does this matter?
“I have a welcome mat.” He points to the door.
“That’s an ugly welcome mat.”
“Is not.”
“That would scare away any child on halloween.” You snap. “Are you trying to ruin their halloween?”
“No one really comes up here on halloween.” He shrugs again. “Why does it matter?”
“You… you’ve been free! You have been free this whole time and this is how you live and- I…..”
“I had other things to worry about besides Hydra. And John Walker. Tony Stark and the snap and- well I was trying to find you.” He admits.
“You were trying to find me?” Your chest constricts, as you watch him. “You tried to find me?”
“I did but after I was freed it was like they made you completely disappear and I’m assuming it’s because they knew I would start looki-” Before he can finish his sentence his phone rings and he sees Sams name, giving you an apologetic look before picking it up. You take a moment to try and fix yourself, taking deep breaths in. “He WHAT?”
This catches your attention, sitting up to watch him carefully as he stands. “I’ll be right there.”
He hangs up and nods. “I gotta go help Sam. Stay here and-”
“I’m coming with you.” You snap, moving to grab your duffel.
“No, we have a situation with John Walker and I need to-”
“I am coming.” And just like that you grab your suit, giving him your best glare as he shakes his head. “You both are helping me. The least I can do is help you.”
“You don’t have to.” He mumbles.
“But I will. Let’s go.”
Ladies always rise above
Ladies know what people want
Someone sweet and kind and fun
The lady simply had enough
“Thank you.” You whisper, keeping your head on his chest as you trace patterns along his skin. “Thank you for helping.”
“If you got away what would you do?”
“Me? I….. I would find the kids and make sure they made it. I would buy a house and get a cheesy welcome mat for it. I would decorate for halloween and….. And I would adopt a kid and-” You could taste the freedom, imagine it right there. A happy life.
“That sounds… amazing, flower.”
You lift your head, smiling softly as you lean up to kiss him, and he smiles back before moving to kiss you back.
You feel him stiffen before sitting up quickly and reaching for his knife. “Bucky?”
“I’m sorry.” He mumbles. “I’m so sorry.”
Before you can realize the door is blown open and agents rush in to grab you.
“Oh…. oh I like this duo.” John Walker smiles, watching you stand slightly behind Bucky with your arms crossed. He doesn’t say a word and neither do you, both giving him a good glare. The Winter Soldier and The Viper. “I hadn’t realized that Bucko boy came with his very own sidekick.”
“этот идиот знает, что от него пахнет рыбой?” (does this imbecile know he smells of fish?) You ask, sneering a bit and taking a step closer to Bucky. “и так небрежно использовать свое имя. Я могу сломать этого человека за считанные минуты.” (and to use your first name so casually. I can break this man within minutes.)
“Я с нетерпением жду этого. Еще я очень голоден, мармеладных червячков мне не хватило, чтобы поесть..” (I look forward to it. I'm also very hungry, gummy worms were not a sufficient meal)
You nod, trying not to smile as he gives you a look over his shoulder while Walker shuffles uncomfortably on his feet. “Shouldn’t we all speak english?”
“Maybe.” Sam shrugs. “But I find it’s easier to let these two do their thing. You said something about a raid?”
“There is a train heading down south here in 30 minutes and I know for a fact that there are rebels planning on stealing what’s on it.”
“What’s so important about what’s on the train?” Bucky asks, casting a look towards you and you see him catalog each and every one of your weapons just as he always used to do as the soldat. You give him a glare and he shrugs.
“Weapons.” John mutters. “And if we can intercept the rebels then-”
“You get your job back?” Sam snides.  John stutters for a second and you snort, enjoying the panic on his face. He glares at you, preparing to say something as you step forward to grab one of your knives. You had no clue who this man was but it was easy to know that he was not an ally.
“Get your-”
“She’s not a dog.” Sam snaps, as Bucky sneers. “We’ll help, but on our terms. No one gets hurt and no one gets pummeled without cause.”
“Fine. Let’s see what you guys can do.” John sneers at you both, and Bucky sends you an easy smile over his shoulder as you smile back.
“Устроить им ад?” (Give them hell?)
“следую твоему примеру, Барнс.” (Following your lead, Barnes) You smile back, both of you swiveling to Sam and moving together.
You stand with him on a bridge, keeping a hand on his arm to stabilize yourself as you keep an eye on the ledge, fixing the comm in your ear with your other hand as he does the same.
“I….. I never wanted to betray you.” He blurts, as John tries to convince Sam to give him one of their comms, his argument of ‘I’m part of the team!’ almost making you snort. But Bucky’s words kept your attention as you tried to play it cool. Keeping your eyes trained on the bridge before you.
“Is this a good time to talk about this?” You mutter in Russian, just in case Walker could hear you both like you could hear him.
“It was the status report. They were making me do it every month and….. I fought it. I really tried to fight it.” He admits in russian, casting a look to Walker before turning back to you, his hand shooting out to wrap around your arm as you lean to prepare a landing. “Careful.”
“I thought…. You were…. Nevermind it was my mistake.”
“It wasn’t a mistake.” He snaps, pulling you closer. “It… It was everything to me.”
“I shouldn’t have. I should have kept my eyes on the mission and I ruined it and I ruined it for those kids. You were a weapon dangled before me, they knew I would fall for it. They knew I would fall for the freedom of it. And I’m sure they already knew that I was helping those kids and they just needed to prove-” The words are spilling out and you just can’t seem to stop them, tears beginning to fill your eyes. “I just wanted… I just wanted to help them.”
“You did.” He mumbles, moving until his chest is pressed to your shoulder. “Please look at me.”
“I messed it all up.”
“You didn’t mess anything up-”
“I did. I fell in love.” You finally look at him, tears in your eyes as he takes a deep breath in.
“I-”
“Incoming.” It’s Sam's voice in the comms that makes you both jump before you look to see the train coming.
“On it.” You mumble back in english, stabbing a knife into the brick beneath you as Bucky keeps a hold on your arm.
“Be careful, we’ll be right behind. Keep a knife ready and-”
“I’ve got it.” You laugh, watching the train get closer and closer.
“I just worry.” He admits, leaning forward to kiss your cheek softly. “And just so we are clear, I fell in love too.”
You try not to smile, giving him one last look before using the chord and launching down as you hear Sam count down in the comms, feet landing on the top of the train with a thud before you dive for the top grate and begin working on tearing it off.
You manage to tear it off in time to duck and lay flat as a sign under the bridge appears, managing to avoid it before crouching and climbing in as the train breaks from the bridge, three heavy sets of footprints hit the top of it while you climb across boxes to get to the end of the cart.
“Viper?!” Walker calls, landing in the crate followed by Bucky and Sam. You don’t bother answering, too busy trying to lift the shaft on the cart.
“You good?” Sam asks, coming to your side.
“I’m fine.” You mumble. “I can handle the mission sir-”
“Did you just sir me?” Sam laughs, leaning to help you with the shaft, letting the sunlight break in as the wind snaps in both your faces.
“You guys see anything?” John yells across the way as Bucky hops over a box and reaches you both.
You have just enough time to turn, ready to bite a response to Walker when you spot the bomb taped to the far wall. Your mouth opens in an attempt to yell a warning but it’s too late. It all blasts to shit.
There was nothing but pain as you hung suspended in the cell, the Shadow Widow sneering at you from her spot in the corner while Valkov took a break from torturing you. Your breathing is ragged, blood falling out of your mouth with the saliva as your eyes water.
You can no longer feel your legs, and your fingernails had been torn out first. Sobs racking through your body as he asks the question again, his russian loud.
“WHERE ARE THE LOOSE ENDS?!!”
You couldn’t betray the kids, you couldn’t do it. So when he picked up the drill you closed your eyes, sobbing once more as you try to blink Buckys face out of your memory, succumbing to your punishment.
Heat blasts against his back as you scream out, Sam yelling loudly, all three of you grasping anything you can as the train keeps going.
Bucky’s metal arm finds purchase on a broken handle of the train, trying to pull himself up as Sam grips the side grates of the train trying to activate his falcon wings while you struggle to keep hold of what is left of the floorboard in the train car, nails scraping as you grimace in pain while your legs stay suspended in the air.
“HOLD ON!” He calls, reaching his flesh hand for you before the metal of the door groans and he has to freeze.
Walker appears, bleeding from his ears and looking frazzled as hell, but Bucky breathes out a sigh of relief when he sees the idiot reach to help you. Hope that you would make it out of this mess, that is until John stumbles as he reaches for your hand and ends up making you lose your holding.
You scream out, nails scraping as you slide out, nearly all your body suspended in the air. Both Bucky and Sam scream, reaching for you before they realize they can’t.
“When does this fucking bridge end?” Bucky snaps, looking down to the hundreds of feet below, memories flashing in his mind.
“Language.” Sam grunts, exhaling in relief when he sees you manage to grab the final woodboard, your last chance at holding on.
“Complete the mission.” You snap. “I can get up.”
“We don’t leave each other behind.” Bucky grunts, using his flesh hand to reach for a rope connected to the roof of the train car.
“Hydra tells us we need to complete the missi-”
“This isn’t Hydra and I’m not leaving my girl on this train.” Bucky snaps and Sam whoops out a loud ‘fuck hydra’ as they both struggle to get to the main opening.
There are thuds on top of the train and you risk a look to see multiple hooded figures with bags getting ready to ransack the weapons. A grunt of anger passes through you as let one hand free from the board, much to Bucky's chagrin as he yells out for you before you reach and grab your compact launcher you had hidden in the belt of your suit and shoot the roof with the grappling hook, pulling yourself up right in time for Walker to fall back into the car.
“This manchild is useless.” You sneer, reaching for Bucky immediately, hands grasping his tactical vest and dragging him as much as you can into the train car as Sam struggles to get in as well.
“There are about 15 figures. We should have about 10 minutes before they blow the rest of this train up.” You explain, keeping your hands on his shoulders as you assess him. “Are you hurt?”
“No I’m-”
“I’m hurt!” Walker calls, making you hiss an unappealing word at him in russian before moving to look at Sam.
“Do you want the viper or me on this mission?”
“Viper would be nice.” Sam nods, looking at all the weapons. “Viper for sure.”
You nod, turning to assess Bucky one more time before he nods at you and you both begin working.
While he was doing lines
And crossing all of mine
Someone told his white collar crimes to the FBI
And I don't dress for villains
Or for innocents
I'm on my vigilante shh again
You both work in tandem, every punch he throws shoves the person straight into your kick. You slash your knife at anyone that gets too close to him, slicing their skin easily as he snipes out anyone rushing to the train.
Sam is finding the rest of the bombs, disarming them to the best of his ability.
You hiss in pain when you get hit in the jaw, but Bucky is there smashing the butt of his gun to the back of their head as you blink away the tears. His hand finds your jaw, assessing the damage before turning and nodding to the path you guys need.
“So…. what’s the plan after this?” He asks, huffing as he gets to the slate you had originally been planning on clearing.
“After this? Probably dinner.” You laugh, bending to break the controls. He adjusts himself so you were back to back, him watching to make sure you were good.
“I mean…. After this mission.”
“I….. I want to finish the list.” You answer, tearing out a board to access the rest of the control panel.
“Does that list still include me?” He blurts, making you freeze. When you don’t answer he looks down to see you already staring up at him with wide eyes.
“You saw that?”
“On your list. Highlighted and everything.” He nods, snapping his attention to a thud across the way, finding it empty. It was enough to get you back to work, focusing on the wires and buttons again. “I would understand if you wanted to-”
“I don’t anymore.” You snap. “I don’t think I ever would have been able to but it’s not like I planned to make it far after I got out. I didn’t have a plan. Everyone else had a plan and I was left! I was tortured and maimed for wanting that freedom, and when the time came I was the only one that had nothing to live for.”
You were seething, and he could only agree. He hated the other widows for what they did to you, that would never be forgiven.
“I wanted a family. That’s all I wanted.” You whisper, finally breaking the right chord. The lights immediately die out and the train lurches as it comes to a complete stop.
“Is that still what you want?” He whispers back, holding his hand out for you to grab and help you up.
“I don’t deserve it.”
“You are the only person in this entire universe that deserves that.” He snaps. “And it’s important to me that you know that.”
“It’s not like I have much of a future open.”
“Well I think you have a bit of a future in the vigilante game if you ask me.” He smiles.
I don't start it, but I can tell you how it ends
Don't get sad, get even
So on the weekends
I don't dress for friends
Lately I've been dressing for revenge
“I’m sorry, you used to what?!” Sarah laughs, coming around the kitchen counter to grab a bottle of soda from your hand, eyes wide. “Dip your knives in lethal poison.”
“It made things easier. Even if I didn’t hit a vital organ I still knew the job was done.” You explain, shrugging a bit as she laughs. You still got nervous when talking about your past, but Sarah seemed anything but judgemental.
Sam's sister ended up being your very best friend on this earth, which surprised you to no end. You loved her kids and you loved her. You especially loved girls night because you never thought this would be an option in general. Nonetheless you had friends now. You had a home, with a silly little welcome mat that was left on the porch for the trick or treaters every year.
The very same one that was getting trampled on every time Sarahs kids ran through with your adopted children, covered in mud and laughing loudly.
“Hey! Mind your mess!” She snaps out but you can’t stop smiling as you watch your adopted 4 year old chase after one of her sons.
“What are you up to?” Bucky asks, coming in from the garage with Sam and Joaquin smiling from ear to ear as he rushes to kiss at your jaw.
“We are getting ready.” You laugh, shooing him away.
“For?”
“The Eras movie. You have daughters now Barnes. You need to get with the program.” Sarah scoffs playfully, making her brother laugh as they pick up the snacks and head to the living room.
“Hey…. I just wanted to say thank you for your help on the mission the other day.” Torres smiles before following the rest into the living room leaving you with Bucky.
“Hear that? Vigilante shit right there.” You laugh, leaning forward to kiss him.
“Still waiting for you to kill me.” He whispers against your lips, winking before heading to catch your daughter as she tries to dash past, making her laugh loudly and reach for you.
