Heartbeat- Hueningkai x Reader
Tumblr media
a/n: i wrote this when i was mentally drained and tired so this is basically just a hueningkai comfort fic LMAO the reader is sad and drained and here comes the gentle giant to save the day :)
MASTERLIST
wc- i have no clue, 250????
warnings- slight angst, death joke, reader sad, kai ☝️🤓, i wrote this on my phone so lowercase is intended!
song- the way things go by beabadoobee
Tumblr media
“can you try to get up?” kai watched as you laid in bed not moving. you had your headphones on and he could hear the music clearly. some movie soundtrack from like 2008, that’s how he knew it was bad.
at some point he knew you’d have to get up, he wasn’t stupid he knew something was wrong but you didn’t want to talk about it. kai leaned against your bed frame and sighed. you hadn’t been active on any social media either, normally you’d say something- anything.
this whole thing was upsetting, you not replying to messages, him having to come all the way over here just to see what’s up, and now you aren’t even acknowledging him. even when you were sad you’d acknowledge him…
kai started to ponder on what he could do to fix the situation, there was no base to start, no problem he knows of that he could fix. he moved his hair out of his eyes and looked down at you again. your eyes were open, just staring at the wall as music played on your headphones.
you looked tired. you felt tired.
kai took a deep breath and sat down next to you on your bed.
“i know you don’t want to talk about it. and you don’t have to i promise…” he grabbed your hand and you didn’t flinch away from him. you just stayed staring, “y/n i’ll stay here until it’s okay…” when you didn’t reply he looked at you.
“you better be breathing.” kai checked your pulse, however your small smile gave away that you were in fact still alive. kai’s eyes lit up at your smile gracing your features.
“i missed your smile you know.” he had no filter when it came to complimenting you.
“i’m sorry…” you mumbled and sat up slightly, kai stopped you and leaned down to lay next to you instead.
“don’t apologize. are you overwhelmed?” he asked, playing with your hoodie strings.
you nodded and took a deep breath, “i’m tired.”
“amen to that.” kai tried to joke, you looked up and saw him smiling at you. his eyes squinting and nose scrunching. you wanted to freeze frame this image and keep it forever.
“did you text me?” you asked now feeling guilty for going ghost, your phone has been on do not disturb for god knows how long.
kai shrugged, “a few times.”
you lifted up your phone, “kai you texted me over 30 times.”
he let out a small snort, “welllll…. that’s a few! it could be hundreds..!”
you smiled and leaned on him more, “thank you for coming.”
“always.”
the two of you sat in silence on your backs, kai listened to the music you had playing after you sat your headphones next to both of you. he held your hand as you both stared up at your ceiling. the tapestry above your bed waving back and forth due to the fan.
“my head hurts…” you mumbled and rubbed your eyes.
kai looked at you, “that’ll happen when you have your eyes open and not blinking. i thought you were dead.” he laid back on his side to look at you.
you let out a laugh, “trust me i feel like it.”
at this kai held you closer to him, you could feel his heartbeat against your chest.
“if you feel dead, you can pretend my heartbeat is yours, it already belongs to you anyways…” he mumbled into your hair, his breath started to slow down. yours did too. soon you were both asleep. both your heartbeats connecting.

Okay this happened a couple years ago and I'm mostly over it but I Need to know who was in the wrong in this scenario once and for all.
So me (24F) and my sibling (25NB) have always had a tumultuous relationship. We both grew up in an abusive household and had undiagnosed mental issues growing up so we were always fighting. I don't wanna get into the nitty gritty of it all, just wanna set up some context for our relationship. Just trust me when I say it was BAD on both of our ends.
Fast forward to Feb 2021. We're both moved out of the house and have a slightly better relationship. We talk on the phone and text and only see each other a couple times a year. We're currently in a fight (I don't remember why. Something about me not living up to their expectations? Idk it was a while ago) so we haven't talked in a bit. I'm having a tough time bc it's almost been a year into the pandemic so I'm severely depressed and severely poor. My school just took $200(? again it was a while ago) out of my account due to a fuck up with textbook rental returns. They thought I never returned them bc my friend returned them for me and so they posted them under her account. I make a donation post on here to try to get rent money bc I know I'm not gonna be able to fix this mess before it's due. It gets like. idk 30 notes tops. I think I get $50, almost all of it from friends.
A couple days later, my friend tells me someone is accusing me of scamming on my post. I check the notes and my sibling is accusing me of lying about the book rental issue saying that I purposefully didn't return the books (I made a joke about this to them months before bc I didn't know how I was gonna return them with no car during a pandemic, hence my friend doing it for me) and that I'm making this all up to take money from people, specifically black people bc its black history month. I guess in their head they believed that me making my post took attention away from other people's donation posts? Idk. It's probably important to note that we're both white. Anyways, I was completely fucking floored at this. I was also kinda pissed that they said this in the notes of my post instead of over text and hurt that they would immediately come to this conclusion instead of trying to clear things up first. We end up having a stupid fight in the notes of my post and we block each other.
We haven't talked since then. Apparently this was the straw that broke the camel's back. I don't regret going no-contact. The only reason why I'm asking this is bc I know they still believe they're in the right about this and there's always going to be this small part of me that worries they might be right.
So uh. Yeah. TLDR aita for asking for money during black history month
(Hey E if you're seeing this feel free to tell your side of the story in the notes. Maybe this'll be an eye opener for one of us)
What are these acronyms?

pairings: andy barber x reader
warnings: fluff, mentions of smut
summary: you and andy reminisce the day you first met
a/n: my first time writing for our favourite dilf. please be nice xx
- italics are flashbacks-
***********************************************************************
“Andy... wake up, baby.” you whispered.
You smiled as you felt Andy murmur incoherently against your skin as he tucked his head further into your neck. You ran your fingers up and down his back as he huffed.
“Andyyy,” you dragged out the ‘y’, hoping it would annoy him into waking up.
And apparently, it did.
He groaned as he rolled onto his side, opening his eyes begrudgingly. His long eyelashes fluttered as his bright blue eyes light up. You smiled as you took in the pink pillow mark on his cheek and his messy bed-head. You reached out and ruffled his hair as he grumbled and moved away from you.
“Meanie.”
Andy laughed as he rolled over again, pinning you under him. He placed your wrists above your head and held them in one of his hands. The second you were disarmed, kisses were peppered all over your face, neck, shoulders, jaw, his beard tickling you to the point you were writhing and squealing under him.
“And- Andy! Okay, okay, s-stop!” you screamed.
With a laugh, Andy stopped his attack on you and rolled over - again. He pulled you into him as you placed a sweet kiss on his lips.
“Do you remember?”
“I do. Do you?”
“Obviously. You were wondering around town like a lost puppy.” he laughed.
You hit his chest gently, “I was not!”
******
You were new to this part of time. You were a student at the university nearby and decided to explore the quaint town, nearby... only problem, you had no idea where you were going. You wrapped your jacket closer around as the snow came down heavier. You sighed in disappointment as you saw the shutters on the shop windows.
There was hardly anyone around, but you kept walking, hoping to find somewhere you could go. You passed a large Christmas tree near the town centre, its large branches layered with bright snow. You smiled, looking up, thinking about how that was a perfect picture opportunity. You patted your jacket, before realising you had forgotten it. Stupid. You hated clichés, but it seemed like this day was turning into one.
You shivered as the snow came down, even heavier that before. Your rushed to the side, looking for a bus stop you could maybe take shelter under. You were wandering around for a while, with no luck, before you saw a pair of bright headlights. A man stepped out and you rushed towards him, without a second thought.
******
“I still can’t believe you didn’t check the weather!”
“I forgot my phone, okay?!”
******
“Get in!” the man shouted, due to the distance and the sound of the wind.
You rushed towards him as you got into his car. Looking back, you could tell it was a stupid idea, but all you thought about in that moment, was getting out of the cold.
You sighed as you threw your head back and rested it on the headrest.
“Thank you.” you spoke, slightly out of breath.
“What on earth were you doing out there?!” he exclaimed.
“I just wanted to look around town, but then it started snowing heavily and there was no shelter and I realised I forgot my phone and-”
“Hey, hey, it’s okay. It’s fine.” he soothed, stopping your rambling. “I’m Andy.”
“Y/N.” you smiled, reaching out and shaking his hand.
“C’mon, let’s get you warm.”
The two of you talked all the way back to his house, about what you were studying, what he did for a job, how you should’ve known there was a small blizzard approaching. You felt comfortable around him and you knew you were truly fucked when butterflies erupted in your belly every time he touched you.
He gave you his clothes at home, as well as a blanket and some hot chocolate. The two of you talked into the night and you woke up in his arms. He asked you out on a date before you left, and the rest was history.
******
“Y’know, I still remember thinking, you were the most beautiful woman I had ever seen.”
“Oh, shut up,” you smiled.
“I’m serious!” after a small pause, he continued. “I still don’t know how I got so lucky.” Andy brought you impossibly closer to him, pressing his forehead to yours. You felt your cheeks heat up, you still got flustered at the close proximity, even after all this time.
“I love you Andy, so much.” you whispered.
“I love you too, sweetheart.”

It's Alright, Everything Will be Fine.
Author's note: This took a while and the other will as well since I was busy with summer school and making sure not to have a breakdown every couple hours. This is for the requester who asked for this, but also self-indulgence bc man, that shit was brutal for me, and it was not good for my health. Also, take care of yourselves and try to remove yourself from situations that give you high levels of emotional stress.
Prompt: Tucking reader's hair behind their ear to help them get it out of their face.
Pairing: Malleus X Gn! Reader
Warning: Fluff, gn! Reader, 2nd POV, reader has hair long enough to be tucked, Feeling overwhelmed
Tumblr media
Papers scattered everywhere and books piled high at your desk as you read through one of many books needed for your project which you've been working on for the last week and trying to finish all the work before procrastination or exhaustion could hit. You have been cooped up in your room, trying to work while ignoring the small voice in the back of your head saying negative things.
Letting out another heavy sigh, you readjust yourself and tried to start reading where you left off a couple of minutes again before your vision became slightly blurry and you felt your face warming up. You look straight at the wall and take a couple of deep breaths, trying to stop yourself from breaking down, the got up to take a small break from the massive number of things you needed to do. You ignored a majority of the phantom voice that was screaming and picking at your anxiety as you walked away and closed the door behind you. You walk down the hall and the stairs, only the sounds of you footsteps could be heard softly in the silent atmosphere.
You head towards the front door and go outside, hoping that a small break will help you calm down, before sitting down as tears cascade down your cheeks. You brought your knees to your chest and rested your chin on top of them and bit your tongue in order to silence the cry that wanted to escape from your throat.
No matter how much work you got done, the finish line got moved and became more daunting as your anxiety did not help. You barely ate, slept, and went out due to the constant voice degrading you about how you weren't getting the task down and you were going to fail.
"Good evening my treasure," you froze as your boyfriend's familiar voice broke you from your small isolation.
"Hello Malleus, " you greeted back as you straightened yourself, while your bangs hid your puffy red eyes, and wiped the remaining tears away. "I didn't know you'd be taking a stroll tonight."
"Well, I wanted to check on you since you've been quite busy during this past week." He took a seat next to you, causing you to tense up a bit. "Oh, am I causing you discomfort?"
Fuck, he noticed.
"N-no," You quickly answer, trying to think of something. "Its just a bit chilly and I felt a chill up my spine, it's nothing."
"Well then, let me help you," He scooted closer and wrapped his arm around you before his hand guided you head against his chest. "Feel a bit warmer?"
"Yeah."
You relaxed a bit against him as you slowly started to melt, enjoying the calming aura of him before the small voice reminded you of your daunting task you left behind.
"How are your studies?"
"They're going alright." You spoke softly as your anxiety rose and could feel yourself ready to break down again. You couldn't possibly break down in front of Malleus, who's under way more pressure every day than you are right now. This face before you have to deal with leading a dorm, school, and not to mention, preparing for the crown that would come soon.
You felt your chin rise and a gentle hand brushed against you face as your hair was tucked behind your ears as your puffy tired eyes and few tears were now visible. You were met with an astonished expression from your beloved far as he held your face, gently within his hands and started to wipe away the falling tears.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't be breaking down over some stupid school work," you quickly apologized before trying to hide your face but couldn't since Malleus didn't budge.
"My dearest treasure…" He slowly took in your appearance and brought you closer as he engulfed you in a warm embrace, not letting you escape. He kissed the top of your head and rubbed you back as you slowly broke down in the loving embrace of Malleus.
You don't know how long you two stayed there as you told him about everything happening this week while tears fell from your face. During the entire time, he sat and listened while comforting you. He couldn't bear seeing you in tears and not taking care of yourself, especially after everything you've done.
"Look at me," He softly spoke before you looked up at him to see his signature soft smile. "I am so proud of you, and you have nothing to worry about because I know how determined you are. Now, you deserve a break without thinking about work."
He gets up and holds your bridal style in his arms before heading in the direction back to Ramshackle, ignoring your questions. You finally accepted defeat once realizing Malleus wasn't going to let you get back to work and rested your head against his shoulder then slowly started falling asleep and felt a soft kiss on your head before you fell into a peaceful sleep.

Does this look infected to you?
Written for prompt 21 of @sicktember ‘Does this look infected to you?’
Witcher’s are tougher than normal human’s. After a decade of travelling with Geralt this is something that Jaskier is intimately familiar with.
He has seen Geralt survive wounds that would have killed an ordinary man. What’s more, he recovered faster too. Often he would be up and about after a potentially lethal wound, in only a matter of days.
As a result Jaskier occasionally forgot that he was quite an intelligent man and did very stupid things, like neglecting to tell Geralt that he was hurt.
Which is how he came to be in his present situation.
It was stupid really. Which may have played at least a small part in why he neglected to mention it.
He and Geralt had gone their separate ways for a short while so Geralt could take care of a contract in the opposite direction to the party Jaskier had been hired to play at. While at said party, Jaskier had been knocked over by a rather drunk noble and had wound up with a gash on his inner arm after falling into a broken wine glass.
Read it on ao3 here
He was being paid to perform however, not to tend to an injury, no matter that he had only gotten hurt due a guest of the party. So he had done his best to stop the bleeding with a cloth napkin that was only lightly used, then gotten back to performing. By the time the party had ended he returned to his room exhausted and after slipping off his boots had collapsed onto the bed and fallen asleep.
Morning came much too soon after such a late night but he needed to meet Geralt that evening and he had quite a way to travel to get there. He had quickly changed his clothes, giving the cut on his arm a perfunctory check as he did so. Satisfied it had stopped bleeding he finished dressing and gathered his things. Payment had already been settled so it was simply a matter of setting off for the meeting point to find Geralt.
He walked until mid morning before taking a short break. The day was warm and the road was dusty, so he headed off the road and sat on a fallen log to take a drink of water. His arm was throbbing and he peeled back the bloodied cloth, hissing as the makeshift bandage stuck to his skin, causing the wound to weep sluggishly. It was a little red and now he was able to check properly a few stitches probably wouldn't have gone astray.
"Fuck," he muttered to himself. He dug through his satchel and found that he had little in the way of healing supplies. Little being none at all. With a sigh he poured a little water on the wound and wrapped it up with a handkerchief he had found in his bag. "That will have to do. Come on then, best get moving," he said, standing up and putting his bag over his left shoulder and lute case strap over the right. With his belongings settled back on his person he set off once more.
The sun was just beginning to set when he made it to the tavern, he was relieved to see Geralt settled into a corner of the room when he entered and headed straight to the Witchers side.
"Geralt! How did the contract go? I wasn't sure if you would be here yet."
Geralt took a sip of his ale before responding, "Contract is sorted, I got here mid-afternoon."
Jaskier nodded and absently rubbed at his arm. "Good, good. I suppose I should go speak to the proprietor and see if I can offer up my services, try and earn some extra coin for the road." Without waiting for a reply he stood up and headed to the bar.
After securing a deal with the owner for a free meal and discounted room for the night, Jaskier returned to the table Geralt was sitting at.
"Good news my dear Witcher. I got us a room at half the normal cost as well as my supper. I shall go put my things in the room and get ready to play.
Jaskier took off without another word and headed to their room for the night. It was nothing special, a bed, a small dresser with a pitcher of water and a bowl to wash up in. It would do them for the night though.
Jaskier rubbed at his arm again, hissing slightly at the sting of his wound. He tentatively pulled the handkerchief off and winced at the sight of the cut. It was a few inches long and the skin round it was red and inflamed. Nothing to do for it now though, he needed to head back downstairs as soon as he had cleaned up so he could begin to perform for the evening crowd. He covered the injury back up again, washed his face and changed into his last set of clean clothes. After grabbing his lute he headed back down to the tavern to start his set.
Jaskier was pleasantly surprised at the reception he received from the patrons at the tavern. Smaller village’s could be a little hit and miss as to whether they were familiar with his work. A few people were singing along to some of his more popular songs and by the end of the first set he had already made quite a bit of coin.
He stepped away to eat a quick supper, rejoining Geralt in his corner.
“Evening Geralt, are you staying down here or heading up to the room?”
“If you’re alright down here I’ll head up shortly, get settled.”
“Of course my dear. If I'm completely honest I’m feeling quite fatigued myself so I shall try to keep the second set short.”
Geralt arched an eyebrow in disbelief and Jaskier simply rolled his eyes.
“Yes, yes I know, but I had a late night and a long day on the road.”
“Of course. I’ll see you up there shortly then?”
Jaskier finished the last mouthful of stew he had been given for his supper and nodded. He really wasn’t feeling his best and wanted nothing more than to get some rest. But the show must go on. picking up his lute he started strumming as he walked away from Geralt, winking at the Witcher before starting to sing ‘Toss a Coin’.
Most of the crowd were singing along by the end and a few even tossed some coins Geralt’s way. Once the song ended Geralt took one last swig of his drink and headed out of the room and up the stairs.
Jaskier tried to wrap things up early, he really did. But there were calls for ‘just one more’ on more than one occasion and before he knew it the villagers were being shooed out of the tavern as they closed up.
By this stage Jaskier was one more dead on his feet and he bid the innkeeper goodnight before gathering up his lute case, pleased at the amount of coin he had earned, and headed up to the room he was sharing with Geralt.
Jaskier entered the room as quietly as he could, uncertain if Geralt would still be awake.
At Jaskier’s entrance Geralt, who was indeed in bed, stirred and opened his eyes.
“What happened to an early night?” he asked, voice rough with sleep.
“Eh what can I say, they just loved me too much to let me off early.”
Geralt huffed and rolled over and Jaskier sat his things down and removed his boots and his doublet, stripping down to his small clothes and chemise. After quickly scrubbing his face he went to the end of bed and crawled up the wall side, knowing Geralt preferred to sleep closest to the door.
Geralt wrapped an arm around the bard and Jaskier happily settled in, falling asleep in minutes.
It felt like hardly any time at all had passed when Jaskier woke up, his arm was aching terribly and he felt both too hot and cold at the same time.
He sat up groggily and poked at his injured arm, biting back a cry at the pain radiating from the wound. He knew he should have told Geralt about it when he had first arrived but he was so caught up in trying to give Geralt an easy evening that he had seemingly just made things worse for himself. He hated to slow Geralt down, and while seeking assistance for this would not have actually slowed them down, it would have cost them coin. Both in coin spent for the meal and the room, plus the extra he had earned. It seemed so insignificant at the time but now he realised his mistake.
Jaskier’s bitten back whimpers had been enough to rouse the Witcher who was starting to grumble in his sleep. When Geralt went to reach for the bard and couldn’t find him easily he opened his eyes and sat up, looking at Jaskier in the dim pre-dawn light.
“Jaskier? What is it?”
Jaskier hesitated and Geralt lay a hand on Jaskier’s arm causing the bard to flinch and cry out.
“Jask?” Geralt asked, the concern clear in his voice.
“Ah can you perhaps light a candle? I need to show you something.”
Geralt stood silently and used the sign of igni to light the candle on the dresser, bathing the room in a pale yellow light.
Taking a shuddering breath Jaskier pulled the sleeve of his chemise up and let Geralt see the crudely wrapped injury on his left forearm. Without a word Geralt carefully unwrapped it and looked at the wound.
“Does it look infected?” Jaskier asked quietly.
“I think you know the answer to that.”
Jaskier closed his eyes, swallowing loudly.
“I’m sorry for not telling you. It didn’t seem that bad.”
Frustration clear in his voice Geralt replied, “Jaskier, you know better than this. What if this had gotten even worse? You could have wound up with a blood infection-”
“I know, I know. I’m sorry Geralt.” Jaskier looked at the Witcher, the man he loved, and hoped that he could see the sincerity in his face.
“Let’s get you cleaned up,” Geralt said quietly, standing back up and heading to his bags. After rummaging around for a few moments he had the supplies needed to clean and tend the wound. “This is going to hurt.” Geralt cleaned the wound out thoroughly and applied a thick healing salve before wrapping Jaskier's arm in a clean bandage.
Pressing a kiss to the bard's forehead Geralt frowned, "You have a fever Jaskier. Stay put while I get something to help."
Jaskier just nodded in agreement, watching as Geralt retrieved some herbs from his bag and used a short burst of igni to warm a mug of water. He added the herbs, letting them steep for a few minutes before handing the cup to Jaskier.
"Feverfew. Should help bring your temperature down."
Jaskier drained the mug in silence and handed it back to Geralt. Once everything was packed away Geralt joined Jaskier on the bed again.
"Now, you are to get some rest and hope that infection gets better and not worse."
"Thank you dear," Jaskier said, settling down under the blanket and laying his head on Geralt's thigh. "I really didn't mean for it to get so bad, it happened while I was mid performance then I kind of forgot about it."
Geralt ran his fingers through Jaskier’s hair gently. "I'm sure you didn't, you ridiculous bard, but next time just try to remember to tell me."
"Of course," Jaskier replied, his eyes drifting shut at Geralt's ministrations.

—————————————————————————
I went into the gas station to get a pack of cigarettes, and I was nearly frozen from the short walk inside. For the middle of autumn in Mississippi it was surprisingly cold. At least I think it was. I had just moved here and didn’t really have anything to compare it to. The cashier definitely could tell something was wrong because he told me they were on the house. Guess he was the owner or something, that or he was about to get fired. I appreciated it though, since I realized I had forgotten my wallet after I asked him the price. As I was leaving he told me he hoped my day got better. I stopped, glanced over my shoulder, and after a beat I popped a cigarette in my mouth and told him I doubted it would. I walked outside and lit it. I took a puff and almost hacked up a lung. Guess I should have seen that coming since I had never smoked before. I zipped up my ragged bomber jacket and hurried over to my car. I quickly unlocked the doors and hopped in. Put my key into the ignition and…. Nothing. Not even a croak.
“Damn it.” I muttered under my breath. The last thing I needed today was my car going dead. This didn’t surprise me though. Couldn’t expect much more from a 2002 bucket of Toyota bolts. I wish I could’ve bought something better but this thing was all I could afford at the time. I had spent most of my money moving to Jackson two and a half months ago. I might have been able to afford some upgrades by now but after losing my job I hadn’t been able to find another. It was a small construction job. Ten bucks an hour which was decent. The construction company usually hired people in rehab so they didn’t really care that I had no resume. But a couple weeks in, after most of the employees failed a surprise drug test, the owner decided to fire everyone and rebuild his roster from the ground up, or some bullshit like that. Even though I passed and have been sober for almost three years, I guess they didn’t want to take the chance with me. I haven’t even touched drugs before, except for some experiments with weed in college. You would think having a college degree would really help my chances of getting a job but I guess having a criminal record, no matter how small, can really screw you over.
I prayed to whatever being is out there and turned the key again and the Corolla desperately tried to start. After ten seconds of holding the key in place, I was about to slam my fist on the dash when the stupid hunk of junk actually turned over. “Finally.” I pulled out of the parking lot, flicked the cigarette out of the window, and drove home. Well, I say home. It was a shitty motel but it worked. Since I had been there a month and a half before I lost my job they were only charging me $20 a month until I could pay them in full but with that kind of deal you can guess how bad it was. It's just a small local place and the owner is the sole morning receptionist who's just looking for some amount of business. At the time I was her only customer. I still had to kill at least four bugs a day though.
I say I’ve been sober but recently I hadn’t been so sure. The hallucinations had started again. That’s what the doctor said they were. Hallucinations from psychosis due to alcohol abuse. And I hoped he was right, because there’s no way evolution, or god, or whatever being is up there would ever let a nine and a half foot tall thing like that exist. That’s why I got clean. I went to rehab, and the hallucinations hadn’t been back since. That is, until two days ago. I woke up around 3:30 AM two nights ago to a tapping on my window. I blinked a few times and it was gone. Then, last night around 8:30 the tapping started again. I looked out the window, and to my horror, the giant was back. It smiled and waved at me. I screamed and rushed to the window, shutting the curtains. I climbed in bed and curled up under the covers. All night that thing was tapping and scratching at my window. Around 5 AM it finally stopped but I still couldn’t move. Then, when I thought myself brave enough to take a look, it was gone. That’s why I, a brown-haired, green eyed, 26-year-old unemployed vagrant, am buying my first ever pack of cigarettes at 6:30 AM on a Saturday morning.
I got back to the motel around 6:45. I walked in, put the pack of Camels on the counter by the door and walked over to the window. I still hadn’t opened the curtains up again. To be honest I was terrified too. I hadn’t slept at all last night and the fear was stiffening even still. I slowly grasped one of the curtains and pulled it open with the slowest movements I’ve ever had. And the window was perfectly fine. No scratches or dents anywhere.
“What the hell?” I mumbled to myself. “I could have sworn…… maybe it was just a nightmare and I actually did get some sleep.” I wasn’t really tired so the thought process made sense. All of the sudden a small pinging noise came to my attention. It was the motel’s answering machine. I forgot the room even had one of those. I had to use that as my phone number because I couldn’t afford a cell phone at this point. I walked over and clicked the play button. A deep southern drawl came out of the other end. He wanted to meet me at 9 for a….. a job interview? Is he serious? He didn’t say where to meet in the store, he just said he wanted to meet at Shores Grocery Stores. Luckily I knew where that was because it was actually across the street from that gas station where I bought the cigarettes from. I quickly called him back and said I would meet him there.
Nine o clock came by much faster than I expected it to. I got to the store five minutes before the agreed upon time. I had gotten a shower and dressed in my nicest clothes at the time, sweatpants and a plain black t-shirt that didn’t show stains. I walked in and asked a cashier where the main office was and he directed me to the back right corner of the store where a little alcove was. I knocked on the door and heard “C’mon in.” from the other side. I opened the door and walked inside. “Can I help you?” Asked a man who looked like he was about to go to a rodeo. He was a six-foot-three, blonde haired, blue eyed, 56 year old Caucasian man, wearing a blue flannel shirt, cowboy boots, a white cowboy hat, and dark blue Wrangler jeans.
“Um… y-yeah, I-I’m here for a job interview.” I stammered.
“Ah, yeah, you’re in the righ’ place. Have a seat.” This guy's southern accent was something else. I could barely understand half of what he was saying. He stuck out his hand. “Name’s Terry Shores. I own this here establishment.”
I shook his hand and sat in the seat across from him. “Hi, I’m Jordan. Jordan Belmont.”
“Ah, Jordan. Like the country from the Bible Lands.”
“The What Lands?”
He looked at me as if he was second guessing his decision. I wouldn’t blame him if he was. One look at me and I would have kicked myself to the curb, not even a word shared.
“I’m actually named after my grandfather. Richard Jordan Manhoff.”
“Well ain’t that something. Do yah have any religious beliefs, son?”
“Well…. Kind of.”
“How kind of?”
“Well, I’m agnostic.”
“Agnostic?” He asked. I couldn’t tell if he was trying to figure out what it meant or if he was trying to not laugh.
“It means that I-“
“I know wha’ it means. You’re agnostic an’ yah decided to move to the Bible Belt?”
“What’s the Bible Belt?”
“Oh bless your heart.” He said, shaking his head and smiling. Being from California, I of course had no idea what he meant by that so when I responded with “Um….. thank you?” Terry threw his head back and laughed the biggest belly laugh I have ever heard. After about twenty seconds of laughing he wiped his eyes, looked at me, and said “Alright, let’s get this interview started, why don’t we? I see yah got a Bachelor’s in Business Management?”
“Yes sir, I do.” I said, knowing exactly where this interview was going.
“Wonderful, but I also see that yah have a criminal record, is tha’ right?”
“Uh, yes sir… I do” I said, my heart sinking with a feeling that this interview was about to come to an abrupt end.
“Tell me about that. How’d yah get it? What’d yah do?” Terry’s long southern drawl made it feel like the words were stretched out, making them hurt even more as I knew once I told him what happened, he would almost definitely ask me to leave.
“Well…. It’s a bit of a long story.”
“Well go right on ahead. I got pretty much nothing else to do today. After this all I do is just watch sec’rity cameras.”
“I um…. I burned down my house…”
“Now why in God’s green earth would you burn your own house down?”
“Well… it wasn’t my house per se. It was my landlord's house that I was renting.”
Terry nodded. “Righ’. And?”
“Well…. To shorten it up a bit, I had an alcohol problem, and according to the doctor it was so bad that it made me hallucinate this demonic creature thing, and I thought it was chasing me. I got so paranoid that one time I poured gasoline all over my house and prepared for it to come back. When it did, I ran out of the house, and threw a match into a puddle I had made, burning the whole place down in an attempt to kill the thing. When my landlord found out, he pressed charges. The judge gave me two options. 2 years in prison with a year of probation, or mandatory rehab with at least 2 years of supervised AA meetings, where there would be a cop to check in on me every week, which would also count as 2 years probation.”
“You still go to AA?”
“Yes sir… well, when my car will let me, if it works.”
Terry laughed, “Yeah, I’ve been having similar issues like that the last couple days. My truck darn near di’nt turn on this mornin’. Almost thought I would have to call and cancel with yah. Are yah still sober?”
“Yes sir. Almost three years now.”
“Well, here’s the thing. If yah don’t burn down any more houses, yah stay sober, and yah go to AA at least twice a month for the next 4 months, I’ll give yah the job immediately.”
I nearly got whiplash from his words by how much I did a double take. “Wait, what?”
“I need someone to manage my store and you seem to be the most suitable candidate I’ve seen these past two weeks. It only pays nineteen an hour, no Walmart or nothing, but we could renegotiate after a while if yah prove yourself reliable.”
“Are you serious?” I asked incredulously. No way this guy was about to hire me, a convicted arsonist, to manage an entire grocery store.
“Course I am.” He said solemnly. “I’m intending to open a ranch with my wife where kids can come and learn about horses. I love learning kids to ride.”
“Teaching kids.” I said and immediately regretted every syllable. I REALLY needed this job. And now I just blew it.
“What’d you say?” He glared at me.
“I’m sorry. Old habit. I was an English minor and I tutored middle schoolers during college. I’m really sorry. Please forgive me.” I begged him, desperately attempting to save myself.
Terry smiled a big, tobacco stained toothy smile. “I’m just messing with yah. My wife Meera has been trying to get me to have better grammar for months. She’ll appreciate having someone at the store to do that too. So what'd yah say? Can yah start tomorrow?”
“Um… yeah!” I said, barely able to contain my excitement. This was by far the best thing that had happened to me in a good 5 years since I had graduated college. “As long as my car doesn’t run out of gas by then. I can’t really afford gas until Monday.”
“Tell yah what,” Terry said leaning forward. “There’s a gas station across the street. I’ll pay for a full tank and I can just take a bit from your first few paychecks until it’s paid back. How’s tha’ sound?”
“Are you sure? You really don’t have to do that.” I said feeling guilty at the amount of generosity he had already shown by even offering me the job.
“O’ course. Like I said. I really need someone to fill this position.”
When we got outside Terry asked me which car was mine. In the thirty minutes we were in his office the parking lot had practically filled up. I pointed out my car and Terry exclaimed “GOOD GOD SON! That’s your vehicle? Are yah sure I shouldn’t just buy yah a new car instead of a tank of gas?” We both laughed and I drove him over to the gas station. Afterwards I thanked him profusely and agreed that I would be back tomorrow morning at 8AM sharp. He told me to hang on a second, walked back inside, and returned a few seconds later with a new pair of jeans. He tossed them to me and said I’ll take these off your first few checks as well. You’ll need them. No sweatpants in the dress code.” I looked at them. 31/30. I looked up.
“How did you know what pant size I wear?”
Terry chuckled and turned around to walk inside. “I have an awfully good eye for knowing those things about people. See you at eight, Jordan.” And with that he walked inside, and I had a job. I was so excited I could scream. But I didn’t because I didn’t want to look insane…… again.
That night, after I did laundry, I laid out a Ramones t-shirt, and the pair of jeans Terry had given me. I had to go to another store to buy a belt because I felt too embarrassed to walk into the Shores Grocery Stores to buy one. I honestly wasn’t even sure if they would have one to begin with. I bought a cheap braided leather belt and a couple microwave dinners, and now I was broke until Monday when my last check from the construction job could go through. I had waited to cash it until I absolutely needed to. As I left the parking lot, though, I could have sworn that I saw it again. That thing. Whatever it is. And I knew I was completely sober. Back at the motel, I nuked a Hungry Man microwave dinner and closed the curtains again. I was so exhausted from the night before but I had a bad feeling that the thing would come back again tonight. I had bought some melatonin at the store as well, so after everything was prepared for Sunday and I had eaten dinner, I popped five into my mouth, swallowed them down with a can of Sprite I had gotten at the motel vending machine, and passed out within three minutes. The next time I woke up was 6 hours later, 5AM, except this time there was no tapping, there was no scratching. I honestly believe I just woke up because my body was ready to be awake. I wasn’t even tired anymore. I climbed out of bed, got a shower, put on the jeans but decided to put a Clash t-shirt on instead of the Ramones one because it was less wrinkled. It wasn’t anywhere near time for me to go to work so I grabbed the cigarettes, climbed onto my bed and flipped on the tv. The Boomerang channel came on playing the Flintstones, which I'm not really a fan of, but I didn't feel like switching the channel so it stayed. I popped a Camel into my mouth and lit it with a cheap Scripto lighter I had gotten for a dollar a couple weeks back. I took a slow deep drag from it and exhaled, a much smoother attempt than last night. Then, I saw it. I call it the Hunchback. It’s human-like, but it has brownish-gray skin, with giant, black soulless eyes. Small palms with extremely long fingers and short, sharp nails. It’s completely hairless, with long arms that drag on the ground. Sharp pointed, shark-like teeth, with a tongue that it constantly uses to lick its non-existent lips whenever it watches me. When it walks it always has bent knees and it leans over like an old person using a walker. It has long feet, I would guess a foot and a half each. And it’s growled at me before. It sounded distorted, kind of like the Jurassic Park T-Rex. But now, it was sitting on my TV. I don’t mean on top of my TV. I mean INSIDE. On the show. It was sitting next to Fred Flintstone’s recliner, where Dino was supposed to be. And he was staring at me… licking his would-be lips. I screamed and threw the lighter at the tv. I missed and it smashed against the wall.
“Shit!” I cried as I had simultaneously broken my only lighter and made a huge mess on the wall. I grabbed for the TV remote, but it was gone. Nowhere to be found. I had set in on the nightstand, but it wasn’t there. It wasn’t on the floor or anything. It had just disappeared. I rushed over to the TV set and as I did I saw the Hunchback approaching the screen as well. It sounded like it was moaning. A long, drawn out howl type of sound. I pressed the power button and nothing happened. I tried changing the channel. Nothing. The Hunchback was starting to move faster. Finally I reached for the power cord in the wall behind the TV. As I pulled it out I saw the Hunchback attempt to leap out of the TV but I had pulled the cord out of the wall just in time. And as the TV screen faded, I got a chance to stare my attacker in the face. Which immediately made me feel nauseous. I took a seat on the bed to catch my breath. My heart was racing. Am I going crazy? I thought. I haven’t had a drink in years but it’s back again. There’s no way this is a hallucination this time. It can’t be. I decided to put it out of my mind and went to the bathroom to grab some toilet paper to wipe the lighter fluid off the wall. Suddenly I smelled something burning and remembered I had set the cigarette on the nightstand. I quickly ran over and put it in the ashtray. Thank god that I wasn’t in a non-smoking room. I finished cleaning up the lighter fluid and hoped that it wouldn’t stain and the motel staff wouldn’t be too pissed at me for any potential smell. I looked at the clock, 6:35. The motel had a small breakfast bar. Just toast and cereal. It’s not technically a breakfast bar, just food for the overnight staff, but I’d become friends with the receptionist, a short, stocky black guy named Russell. He sometimes lets me in the back for some food in the early mornings.
I was able to grab a match book from Russell while eating breakfast with him. A bowl of Frosted Flakes and two pieces of cream cheese toast. I went back to my room to grab the pack of Camels before I hopped in my Corolla and drove to work. It was only a five minute drive so I actually got there twenty minutes early. I expected more people to be there but there were only two other cars and Terry’s dark blue Chevy Silverado. So I went back to Terry's office, and talked with him for a bit. I mainly wanted to ask him one question; why is it called Shores Grocery Stores instead of Shores Grocery Store. It turns out that Terry called it that because when he opened the store seven years ago he was intending to have multiple stores by their tenth year. I also asked him why they had a clothing section if they were a grocery store, and where it was. Terry’s response was they had installed a full clothing section two years ago to try and expand the store Walmart style but it hadn’t gone over well, but Terry decided to keep a small one just in case the clothing section started being in demand. The clothing section was in the back left corner, opposite Terry’s office, so I took a bit of time to see what they had, and it was exactly what I expected. Flannel shirts, Wrangler jeans, and three cowboy hats. A very Terry clothing section. As I headed to the back to clock in for the first time I learned that the two other cars in the parking lot belong to the two main openers, one cashier, and a stock boy, with another stock boy to arrive in about thirty minutes. Terry had to leave after showing me where the time clock was so he could attend church service at eight thirty, but he said he would be back at one. I had to ask the other cashier how to log into a register because, as the manager, I was allowed to do whichever thing I wanted; either be a cashier, help stock, or watch the security cameras, which Terry described as ‘The most boring task I have ever done in my life’ so I decided I’ll do what I can to avoid doing that. The day went by pretty smoothly, although I had to stop a lady at the doors because Tabitha, the cashier, thought the lady might have grabbed a couple candy bars when she turned around to break a hundred. She actually had and willingly gave them back. I had to go to the office to write up a report on the attempted theft, something I have to do with every injury, shoplift, etc. after that I had two hours left on my shift so I just hung out in the office with Terry for most of it because at that point the second cashier had arrived which was able to hold the flow of customers pretty well. Right before I was supposed to go to lunch, though, one of the stock boys, a seventeen year old stoner kid named Tyler, dropped a bottle of bleach on the floor, which was fun because I had to make sure nothing went in his eyes or his mouth, help them clean the mess up, and, of course, write another incident report. I went to lunch thirty minutes late. There was a twenty minute period at three where I had to go out and help in the third of four checkout lanes but that was the last major event of my work day.
That night went much more smoothly. I went to the library to create a free library membership and check out a couple books. I wasn’t about to risk turning on my TV again. I checked out three books. One, about store management so I could freshen up a bit since I had been out of college for a while. Pet Sematary by Stephen King, one of my all time favorite books, and a short book called Dead Connection by some guy named Vincent V Cava. I had never heard of him but the cover looked interesting so I thought I would give it a try. For the span of recent events, horror books seemed very fitting. Maybe it would help me mentally prepare for the potential coming onslaught of hauntings. But the Hunchback didn’t come back. Not that night, or the next morning. Monday resulted in no special events either, Tyler didn’t spill anything although he nearly dropped a big box full of egg cartons. After work Terry and Meera invited me over to their house for dinner. I found myself beginning to feel safe and settled, seemingly finding my place in the world. I went back to my motel room that night and fell asleep easily; no melatonin, no Hunchback, and of course, no tv.
I woke up ready to celebrate the one year anniversary of the last time I saw the Hunchback. It had been a pretty good year for me. I was steadily making nine hundred dollars a week as the manager of Shores Grocery Stores, I had finished paying off my debt to the motel a few months ago. I had also gotten my own small apartment with the help of Terry, and my life finally seemed to be going up for once. I went over to my desk that I never actually used as a desk, instead using it as a prop for a medium-ish fish tank and fed the few fish I kept in the tank. “Morning boys.” I said as if they could hear and understand me. I grabbed a shower, threw on an old Black Flag t-shirt and a pair of shorts, and made my way down to my car, which was now a 2008 Honda Civic, thank you Terry for co-signing so I could actually afford it, and hopped in, on my way out to enjoy my day off. The sun was bright, and it was significantly warmer than last autumn. I threw on the knock-off RayBans I had gotten at a Dollar General, put the car in reverse, and headed out to the library. I had a couple books I had to return that were about to go late. The only other real plan for today was to meet up at a bar with a couple friends later that night to celebrate today. No, I wasn’t trying to relapse, as far as they were aware I was actually celebrating sobriety, but they didn’t question why I chose that spot. It was called Lucky’s and was my favorite place to eat. Terry didn’t drink and he introduced me to it. According to him, Lucky’s has the best food in Jackson, apart from his wife. And honestly, I have to agree. When Terry first took me there I ordered a burger, expecting it to be mediocre at best. In a word, mouthwatering. Apparently they have some sort of agreement with a local cattle rancher, and they get super fresh meat, so every burger they make is super flavorful and juicy. I used to date a girl while in college and she had convinced me to try veganism, it wasn’t bad but I am so glad that we didn’t work out. The signature “Lucky Burger” is something everyone needs to try at least once in their life.
The celebration was great. The guys told me to take a few shots, I aggressively refused; at one point I was willing to leave when they told me it was just water in a shot glass, not vodka, which was relieving and I happily took it from them after a good laugh. I still kind of wanted to punch a guy named Tavon, who I had met at the library, because it was his idea, but it was a good joke. It was a great night otherwise. We toasted shot glasses of Coca-Cola to my sobriety, after which Ethan, the opening stock boy who had just turned twenty-one, said that next time we come here I’m going to be his sober ride home. I laughed and told him to shut up as he downed his shot of Coke. Overall I made a few memories and had fun with my friends. I began to feel as if the Hunchback would never come back. And just as I began to feel that way, it did. In full force.
After the celebration dinner, I walked into my apartment to find one of my windows broken. I wasn’t too worried about it though, probably just some of the apartment complex kids trying to seem cool to their friends. The next day, however, it got more aggressive. When I came home from work I found all three of my fish out of their tank, on the floor, dead. I wouldn’t say I was distraught by it but I was very upset. These guys had kept me company for the last seven months. Before I let myself start watching tv again there were times when I would get bored and I would just sit at my desk and watch these guys swim around their tank, feeling jealous that they had nothing to worry about or be afraid of. Later that day I called Terry and Ethan and we held a small funeral for my fish. Even Ethan got up and said something, which surprised me because he’s not much of an animal person, but he apparently thought my fish were cool. I later learned that the reason he thought my fish were cool was because sometimes when he would come over, he would smack their tank and watch them scurry. The next few days were marred by nightmares of the Hunchback. And they were extremely vivid. Many of them were of it chasing me down darkened and dimly lit hallways. But there were a few of them where it would actually catch me, it would pin me on the ground and start eating me alive. It would start at my legs and chew all of the flesh off, then it would go to my arms and then chew all of the flesh from my chest, somehow I would still be alive, and the pain was excruciating. Finally it would bite my head off and I would wake up in a bed that was soaked in sweat. These dreams were constant. At one point I had enough and didn’t let myself sleep for three days straight. When I got to work on the third day Terry looked at me and called me over.
“Are you sick, Jordan?”
“No, I feel fine.” I lied. I hate lying to Terry but I didn’t want him to think I had relapsed in some way.
“Well you look like you haven’t slept for days.” He didn’t say this as an exaggeration or some sort of guess. Over the past year Terry and I had gotten to know each other very well, so he definitely knew I hadn’t slept. “Do you wanna talk about it?”
I don’t like telling Terry no so I simply said “Maybe.”
“Let’s talk about it.” He said, and before he gave me a chance to reply he grabbed my arm and pulled me into his office. He sat me down in the same chair I had my interview in and looked me up and down. “What’s wrong?”
I sighed and began telling him everything, the appearances of the Hunchback last year, the nightmares, my window and the mystery of my fishes’ deaths. Terry sat back in his chair thinking for a couple minutes.
“So….?” I said after some time.
“Well, my guess is that, since it’s been a year since you last saw this Hunchback creature of yours, your subconscious is probably scared of it coming back again, and is manifesting that fear in your nightmares.” These were some of the biggest words I had ever heard Terry say over the past year I had known him, so it took me a bit to process what he had said. But he was right. It was the only rational explanation for all of this. “Now, I don’t know if I can be much help here, I’m no psychologist or anything. But what I can say is that when you get home tonight, get some sleep. You need it. Now get on out there, we need someone at register two.”
I got home that night after working a late shift, and decided to watch some TV during dinner, but I couldn’t find the remote. I figured it was probably under the couch and I didn’t feel like getting on the floor to retrieve it, so I just ate a quiet dinner and went to bed. That night, I had the worst night yet. It wasn’t a nightmare but when I woke up, there were three giant claw marks in my shirt, and through all of my bed sheets, both above and underneath me. I screamed at the top of my lungs as I ripped my shirt off. “What the fuck?” I cried to no one. I immediately called Terry, and he showed up a few minutes later. I showed him my shirt and the bed, hoping he could have some sort of advice or suggestion. The first thing he did was look at me out of the corner of his eye, and slowly say with a smirk “Did yah have a lady friend over last night?”
I glared at him and through gritted teeth said “Not the time, Terry,”
He chuckled and looked back at the bed. He took the shirt out of my hands and examined it for a few seconds. “So yah say this was the Hunchback again?”
“I mean, it has to be. There was no way this was some sort of animal. There was nothing else wrong with my apartment.”
“Has this thing ever made physical contact with yah? Has it ever touched yah?”
I had to think about this for a second but I was able to remember one incident. “Yeah… once. One night I woke up in the middle of the night in a sleep paralysis state. I saw the Hunchback in the corner of my room watching me. When it saw me wake up it slowly walked over to me, it caressed the side of my face and smiled while licking its lips. After that, it just walked away, out of my room, and closed the door. The next thing I remember, it was the morning, and I felt like I hadn’t slept at all.”
“I have an idea.” Terry said, and with that, he walked out of my apartment, got in his truck, and left. He was back within ten minutes and when he came back inside and asked me, “Have you ever shot a gun before?”
“Uh… yeah.” A half lie. When I was little, for a couple years, my dad decided to put me in Cub Scouts, I wasn’t very good at it. One year, at summer day camp, they decided to let the younger kids try the BB guns. Easy enough to say, I sucked at it, bad. I never once was able to hit the target. I did, somehow, manage to shoot my scout master in the right butt cheek. Safe to say they didn’t let me touch the guns after that, probably a good idea for an eight year old. Terry handed me a Sig Sauer P220, it was all black with a beautiful wooden grip.
“If that thing comes back again, shoot it in the face, after that everything should be fine, except for a potential hole in your ceiling.”
“I guess I’ll try my best but I'm a terrible shot.”
“How… how do yah miss from point blank range?” Terry asked in befuddlement.
I shrugged. “Guess I’m just full of surprises, Boss.”
That night I couldn’t sleep at all, not for a lack of trying. It was either the awkwardness of having a gun under my pillow, or the fear of what happened the night before. I just layed on my bed, watching the ceiling fan slowly spin, too scared to look around and see if it had come back again. If it did, the Hunchback made no attempts to make any more physical contact. When the sun started to come up I decided to get up and make a pot of coffee. I looked at one of the security cameras I had set up the night before, hoping I hadn’t spent two hundred bucks for nothing. Suddenly, a loud, ear piercing screech erupted in my kitchen, I covered my ears and crumpled to the floor. The glass cup on my kitchen counter shattered. Like an opera singer singing a high C to a wine glass. The oven door glass flew over me and I got cut a lot. The lightbulb fell out of the ceiling, and shattered on the ground. My blender fell off the counter and also shattered on the ground on my other side. Then my watch shattered, slicing open the top of my wrist. Suddenly my cabinet slammed open, as if flung by an invisible hand, glass came flowing out of it from my now shattered cups and plates, sending a new layer of sharp shards all over myself and the floor. The coffee pot went next, spilling boiling coffee all over the place. I didn’t get hit by much of it but what did get me still hurt like a bitch. And then it ended. The sound was gone as quickly as it came. I was bleeding all over, I was barefoot and I was surrounded by hundreds of tiny shards of glass. I didn’t want to move to not risk cutting my feet on the glass, but I quickly decided that my arms were already cut enough so I proceeded to sweep the glass out of the way with my forearms and slowly crawl my way over to the back left corner of my kitchen, meanwhile getting blood all over the vinyl floor. I checked the security camera. The lens was cracked but it was still recording. Which meant it had recorded everything, with sound thanks to a small microphone hole in the top right hand corner. I took the camera down and removed the micro SD card. I put it in the zipper pocket of my cargo shorts, and crawled out of my kitchen, getting more blood on the floor. I stood up when I made my way to my living room. “That’s gonna suck to clean up.” I muttered to myself. I got a shower to clean off the blood, wrapped my left wrist in a bandage where my watch had sliced it open, put on a new change of clothes, took the old ones to the dumpster, and drove to Terry’s house to show him the footage.
“Well I’ll be damned…” was Terry’s response. “What happened?”
“I’ll give you three guesses.”
“Oh right, the Hunchback. I guess you’re not crazy after all.”
“Wow. Thanks.” I said with fake enthusiasm. I was just relieved I finally had some proof of that fact, even if I felt like I could only show it to Terry.
“I didn’t think it was anything supernatural, I thought yah were just trying to play some kind of joke on me.” I stared at Terry in disbelief.
“Do you really think I would ruin my favorite Black Flag shirt and my bed sheets just to mess with you?”
“Well… I mean yah did call me and tell me the store was robbed.”
“Oh shit.” I had done that. It was a slow night about four months ago. I had just let myself start watching TV again and I had watched Pulp Fiction on AxsTV, which gave me the idea to pull a prank on Terry. I had counted the cash from the registers, and told the closing cashier Tracee to hide the money in the corner behind the drink cooler. After which I called Terry and said the store had been held up at gunpoint and the thief had gotten away with nine grand. Terry was at the store in five minutes, which means he definitely sped and went through some red lights, since his house is ten minutes away from my apartment, which is four minutes away from the store. Tracee and I were literally on the floor laughing. I am surprised neither of us got fired that night. But I digress. I looked at Terry and asked “Got any ideas?”
“How can I? Up until a minute ago I didn’t believe that something like this could exist. The only thing I have are some guns and a hunting’ knife and I’m not sure if they would be effective.”
“Probably more effective than sitting on our hands. We have to try something. I mean, I don’t know how long I can take stuff like today, I’ll probably die if it keeps going this way.”
“Do you have any idea why it’s targeting you?”
“I don’t know. But I don’t want it, not any more. We need to somehow get this thing to leave me alone, or kill it, or something.”
“I do have one idea but it will take a lot of prep time.”
“Ok, what's that?” I asked, hopeful.
“Yah like camping?”
A week later, Terry and I were trekking through the woods behind his house looking for a spot to have a camp out with an indefinite ending. The plan was for Terry to teach me how to shoot a gun, and that we would be camping outside until the Hunchback tried to come after me, then we would shoot and kill it. Simple plan? Not so much, like I said. I’m a terrible shot. Terry didn’t realize just how bad I was until the first time he tried to give me a lesson. He stood me two feet in front of a tree, I raised the gun, fired, and missed. “Oh dear Lord in heaven.” I hear Terry mumble over my shoulder. It took two weeks for Terry to finally get me hitting the tree somewhat consistently. About one third or so of the time I would hit the tree. We wasted hundreds of rounds on that damn tree but Terry had an arsenal, given that he basically lived in the countryside. He had three rifles, two shot guns, and five pistols. Way too much for both of us to use, so I just kept the Sig Sauer and Terry’s hunting knife. I left everything else to Terry. We camped out about an acre from Terry’s house for about a month. We slowly began to lose hope that we would see the Hunchback again when out of nowhere the nightmares started again. And they were bad. I mean three letter organization torture bad. There were dreams where the Hunchback would gouge my eyes out and rip out my tongue. Others where it would rip off all my toenails and fingernails one by one and then pull out my each of teeth. Some were of the Hunchback using its nails to saw through the skin at the base of my fingers, all the way down to the bone and then rip them the rest of the way off. In a few the Hunchback pinned me to the ground face down, grabbed my hair, and ripped the skin from my head with its claw, nail things. It was scalping me alive, leaving blood to ooze into my eyes, leaving me practically blind for the rest of the dream. Others were so bad I don’t even want to think about them ever again. And they all felt real. I felt all of the pain and every single time I would pray that I would just pass out from the pain but I never did. It got bad enough that pain began to linger even hours after waking up. One day I tried to pick up the P220 and my fingers didn’t move for a second. When I finally managed to wrap my fingers around the handle I immediately screamed in pain as all of the nerve endings went into a split second of shockwave pain, almost like they were being reminded that they were once each cut off and tortured away from my hand on many occasions. Terry ran out of the tent thinking I was being attacked by an animal, despite at this point some of them should begin hibernating. I had crumpled to my knees. I noticed my hand was numb, then slowly went back to that tingly feeling you get when you’ve slept on it weirdly, and then it was back to normal. I slowly became aware that my hair was matted to my face with sweat, I looked like I had been in a rainstorm. As I stood up I flung my head backwards and slicked my shoulder length hair back like I normally had it. Suddenly there was a brief rustling in the trees around our campsite. I wasn’t sure but I was fairly certain I saw the Hunchback. Pistol in my right hand, I grabbed the knife with my left hand, put it in the sheath on my belt, and ran after the shape in the darkness. I ran for several minutes following it through left and right turns. Suddenly the shape rounded a thick tree. I tried to follow but it had disappeared. I gripped the gun with my both hands, sneaking around like a cop in a dangerous house that hasn’t been cleared yet. I slunk around snapping the gun in each direction, tree to tree, trying to find it. On a gut feeling, I looked up, and saw it perched on a tree branch, like a bird. I swiped my hands up and fired at hit. I missed five shots in a row but I knew I was close to getting it.
I was tired and sore, which led to me not feeling like chasing it. I wasn’t sure how far out I was from camp and I didn’t want to get any more lost. I just stood there, watching it jump from limb to limb, further and further away. Suddenly there was a hand on my shoulder. I whipped the pistol around to find the barrel of the gun pointed directly in the face of Terry.
“Terry!” I said, breathless. My heart was racing and I was still pointing the gun at him.
Terry slowly used the back of his hand to move the gun away from his nose. “What in heaven did you run off like that for?”
I stared at the ground. “I saw it. I fuckin’ saw it. It was there and I had it but I fuckin’ missed. I fucking missed it, man.” I was practically screaming that last part in frustration. As I said that I put the safety on and pitched the gun at the dry dirt like it was a baseball. It bounced and stopped a couple feet away. I looked up at Terry, tears welling up in my eyes. Terry grabbed my shoulders again.
“Hey, you’ll get it next time.”
At this point I broke and tears started coming down my face one at a time. “Who even says there will be a next time?”
“There will be, and we’ll be ready.”
“Yeah, but what if the guns don’t do anything? What if bullets don’t hurt it and knives do nothing? What if all of our preparations mean nothing?" I fell to the ground, burying my face in my knees, tears streaming down my face. “What do I do if we can’t kill it and the rest of my life is tormented by this freak.” I stopped and pointlessly tried to catch my breath. “Why shouldn’t I just give up now and go home? Return to San Francisco and just end it all. I’m starting to feel like that might be best.” Terry kneeled down and put his arm around me.
“You mean move back in with your parents?”
I scoffed. “Yeah right. Like I could do that.”
“Why not?”
“I can’t! During the alcohol abuse I stole two hundred bucks from them and they didn’t know why. They didn’t know I was addicted to booze and they badically disowned me. They knew something was wrong but they thought it was drugs. They thought I had stolen money from them to buy heroin or cocaine or something. They gave up on me which sent me spiraling even worse. I had no one to turn to at that point and that’s when the Hunchback first showed up.”
“Well, yah got me now,” Terry said looking out into the trees. “So you’re not alone anymore. I’m here for yah, and I promise yah that I always will be. We’ve been through a lot together and I don’t know how I could manage all the stuff going on without yah. Meera really likes yah too.”
I sniffed trying to get control of myself and looked at him. He was smiling, which was odd given the circumstances, but it felt weirdly comforting to have him there with me. “Thanks, Boss. I really appreciate everything you’re doing for me.”
“Meera and I only ever had one daughter. So to me, you’re kind of like a son that I never had. It’s nice.”
I smiled and put my arm around him too. We sat there for a few more minutes, watching the sun lower in the sky before Terry got up and said, “Come on, we need to make our way back to camp before the sun goes down.” I stood up and he led me back since I had no idea where we even were. When we got back it wasn’t a very pretty sight. There’s no way for me to confirm or say with certainty that it was the Hunchback, but all of the food that we had was unpackaged, removed from their respective containers, and thrown in the dirt. We had nothing left but the tent. Terry and I had brought four wheelers out and parked them a few yards away, he went over to them and examined them. They seemed fine so we decided that we would head out tomorrow and buy some more food to bring back to camp. We went to sleep hungry but we toughed our way through it and had breakfast with Meera in the morning. That afternoon we brought some metal shooting targets to the campsite, and set them up in a nearby clearing. Terry used them to help me make my aim more precise, so that next time I would have a better chance of actually hitting the Hunchback. It didn’t really help much but I hit it a few more times than I thought I would.
That night went by smoothly, I had a bit of trouble falling asleep, but the next morning we both woke up to a howling sound, like the one I heard coming out of the motel TV a year ago. I jumped up and grabbed the knife, which I kept next to me at all times just in case.
“What in tarnation kind of animal is that?” Terry asked groggy and still half asleep.
“It’s not an animal.” I said putting on my belt and the sheath of the knife. “It’s the Hunchback. I’ve heard it make that sound before. It’s nearby. I know it.”
Terry got up and threw on his concealed carry harness. We had both decided to wear normal clothes to sleep in in case the Hunchback showed up in the middle of the night and we needed to chase after it. I unzipped the door of the tent and saw the Hunchback staring at us from the woods. I grabbed the Sig Sauer from the nearby folding table and took aim. I fired and missed it by inches. I ran out of the tent and took pursuit as the Hunchback started to flee. Terry was just a couple feet behind me as we both chased after the creature while it slunk its way through the woods. It’s not a fast creature, but its long legs helped it gain distance quickly. We chased it for a few minutes until it disappeared from view. It was the same as last time. I turned a tree and it was just gone. Terry caught up with me, out of breath.
Suddenly a thud came from behind us and we both turned to see the Hunchback lunging towards me, mouth open, claws out. I tried to dodge, but was just out of time. I put my arm up and its claws sank deep into my right forearm. We tussled on the ground, rolling over and over a few times. When we stopped it was on top of me, still scratching at my forearm. Clawing chunks of skin off. It bit down into my side and blood came gushing out. I screamed in pain as best I could when it brought its fist down into my chest. I heard a snap as one of my ribs broke, and a sharp pain in my side became more increasingly prevalent. Terry ran over to try and help me but it pierced its claws directly into his chest. When it took them out blood came rushing from the holes. I finally managed to move my hand down to my waist and grab the knife on my belt. I swung my arm up and stabbed the beast directly in the neck. It screamed and jerked back, breaking the blade away from the hilt of the knife. It took off in the direction of the clearing where we had set up our target practice. I got up and limped over towards Terry. Kneeling next to him, I grabbed the bottom of his head and lifted it up.
“Go on, go after it.” He groaned.
“No, I can’t leave you.” I tried to tell him but he cut me off before I could finish.
“I’ll be fine. Just go.”
“But Terry”
He gave me a weak shove. “Go! I’ll be fine. Go kill that thing, for both of us.” I stood up and looked down at him, considering if I should leave him here, possibly to die. He looked up at me and screamed, “Go on now! Get!”
I turned and left him there, lying on a bed of leaves praying that he would survive. I ran in the direction of the clearing. I pulled the gun from my waist band and cocked it, ready to end my mystery once and for all. I pulled it up, arms extended, like I had seen in cop shows before. The sky was cloudy and gray. It looked like it was about to rain, and it would be a bad one. Mississippi winter rain again. This was the type of southern rain that doesn't stop for a couple of days. I could feel that I didn't have long before it would start. A raindrop fell on my forehead as I turned and entered the clearing. The Hunchback was just standing there. Staring into the sky as if in a trance. I halted at the edge of the trees. I felt like I was in some sort of Doom game.
“Hey, you fuck!” I screamed at it. It turned and looked at me, licking its lips like normal. Rain began to fall even more and I took a couple steps forward. It didn’t move, and I took one more step forward. Then it came running towards me, its arms falling behind it, making it look kind of like Naruto. It tried to swipe its claw at me, but I dodged to the right, rolling underneath its swinging hand. I shot it in the shoulder and its arm went limp. It screamed with a mix of pain and fury as I got up and retreated a few steps backward. I took another shot and just grazed its leg. It roared again and came back at me again. I waited for it to get closer, to make sure I could hit the shot but when my gun jammed, my heart dropped out of my chest, and the next thing I knew the Hunchback was on top of me again, gnawing the flesh from my chest. I was starting to see my ribs. There were at least three of them that were broken. I was screaming and hollering in pain and piece after piece of flesh was ripped away from my body. It was excruciating. My throat started going hoarse and my screams got quieter. The world started going black and I felt myself slipping in and out of consciousness. Then suddenly a gunshot rang out over the trees and the Hunchback stopped eating me. There was a new gash in my forehead, which was streaming blood into my eye, so I was running half blind. I got myself to sit up, propped up on my right arm. Which was missing skin and bleeding all over the dry ground.
The gunshot had come from Terry, who had made his way to the clearing. He apparently had unholstered one of his Springfield 911 9mms and shot the Hunchback directly in what would be the spine, but it had done nothing to stop it. It knocked Terry to the ground and ripped into his leg. Terry was screaming and howling in pain. The Hunchback taunted us by matching his howl and then it laughed, or at least I think it laughed. I wasn’t really sure if it even could. I pulled my gun up to eye level, and prayed to Terry’s God that I might be able to hit it from this distance, just this once. I closed my eyes, and pulled the trigger. Bang. When I opened my eyes again the Hunchback was slumped over on its side, a bullet hole in its head, and Terry was crawling his way over towards me. I didn’t have much time left. I could tell. I was weak and bleeding a lot. The pain in my side was unbearable and it was getting hard to breathe. As he got closer I shakily muttered, “Terry, I. Terry.” And then the world went black.
The next time I opened my eyes I was in a hospital, sun shining through the window, with a breathing tube in my mouth. Pretty much my whole body was wrapped in bandages and my left arm was in a cast. I closed my eyes again and when I opened them, the breathing tube was in my mouth, there was an IV in my left arm, my right arm and chest were still in bandages, and it was nighttime. I looked over to the opposite side from the window and Terry was sitting next to me, in a wheelchair. I tried to sit up but was shot with pain throughout my entire upper body.
“Hey hey, take it easy.” Terry said softly, putting his hand lightly on my chest. “Nice to see yah awake again.”
“How…. How am I still alive?” I muttered, trying to find the strength to move my mouth and speak.
“Grace of God. Best explanation for everything.”
“At least someone was on our side against that thing.” I muttered. “What happened to you? Are you stuck in that thing for good?”
“No no. They had to strap me in this thing because I kept trying to walk before the doctor said I could. They finally gave me this thing so that I could move around and come visit yah.”
“At least you’re not too bad.”
“Oh yeah? Tell that to my leg.” He gestured towards his left leg, which was still wrapped in bandages. “They say I’ll probably need a cane after this but I’ll walk again.”
I leaned back, further into the bed. “Yeah? And what did they say about me?”
“You’ve been out for five days. They said yah likely wouldn’t live to see another day. They gave 200 to 1 odds. But here yah are.”
“Damn.”
“Yah were in pretty bad shape. Yah had five broken ribs, and a puncture in your lungs. When yah stabbed that thing in the neck and it jerked back it both broke your wrist and dislocated your shoulder. Your right arm was missing most of the skin as was your chest. They had to give yah three skin grafts to fix that. I really am happy that yah woke up. I don’t know what I would have done with myself if yah had died.”
“You wouldn’t need to feel bad. I’m that one that dragged you into this mess man. Did I kill it?”
“Pretty sure. That was some good shooting form yah. I told them where the body was. They’re making their way down to it now to get it. I had to show it the footage from those video cameras of yours that we set up in the campsite.”
“Good. I’m glad it’s all over.”
“I’m gonna leave you for a bit. Go talk to Meera and tell her you’re awake. She’ll be really excited to see yah again.”
“Hey, what happened when we got here?”
“Meera brough us, that’s what took me so long. I had called her and told her to be prepared to take us here in five minutes. When we got here she told them that we had been attacked by a bear. When I woke up the next day I told the hospital I wanted to talk to the department of agriculture. I told them everything and showed them the videos. You should have seen the looks on their faces.” He said laughing. I tried to laugh but it made my chest hurt. Terry rolled out of my door and I turned my head back to look into the ceiling.
And that brings us to today. It’s been five years since then and I haven’t seen that thing since. There’s no way for me to confirm that it’s dead because the DOA never found the body. I can say though that all of the torment and nightmares and sleep paralysis, everything has ceased, and I am happier now than I have ever been. About three years ago I met and began dating a girl named Clarissa. She’s a registered nurse and actually works at the hospital I was in after the attack. We learned that she apparently changed my bandages once. Small world I guess. She has a Catholic background and even though she’s not really practicing she still goes to Mass on Christmas. I joined her last year. It was an interesting experience. We moved in together about a year ago, and life has been smooth sailing. We just had our first child, a girl which we named Theressa Anne Belmont. We call her Terry for short. Named after Terry and mother Teresa. She’s absolutely gorgeous. She inherited my green eyes, and Clarissa’s black hair. She has such tiny hands. I could talk about her all day but I am digressing. She’s my whole world. Both of them are. I still work at the store, but I have been “promoted” to managing the newly opened second one. Yes, Terry and Meera finally managed to open a second one, three years behind schedule. We actually asked Terry and Meera to be our daughters' godparents and they happily agreed. They treat her as if she’s their own granddaughter. We take her over there at least once a month, if not more. They absolutely adore her. I don’t blame them. I’m digressing again.
I’ve told Claire, my nickname for Clarissa, everything. I was able to make a copy of our footage and I have the scars, so she believes me about it all. She’s actually the one that convinced me to write all of this. I don’t really have a point in writing it other than to journal my experience. I guess if any of you have a problem with that thing, if you want, you can message me and we can talk about it. I could give you some advice. Maybe tell you what type of rounds would do the most damage. Armour piercing probably. I really hope I don’t get messages about this thing, I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. But if I do, I’m more than willing to help. If you, or anyone you know, has ever encountered this thing, just know two things, it’s called the Hunchback, and you’re not alone. My name has been Jordan Aaron Belmont. And this was my story.

RAGBRAI Part 2 (Iowa)
22-29 July 2023
This is Part Two of my account of this year’s ride across Iowa. These posts have been festering in a ‘drafts’ folder for a month and a half and now I’m determined to just get them out. This one is more of a chronological account of the last few days of the ride, combined with some overall observations of the whole spectacle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 5 of RAGBRAI began with a beautiful pre-dawn ride through downtown Des Moines and out of the city to the east. This was the longest and hilliest day of the week-long ride, covering about 90 miles and climbing 4000’. We passed through Newton, where I’d stayed on my eastbound ride in 2019 and Grinnell before ending the day in the twin towns of Tama and Toledo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 6 included Marengo and the Amana villages, but Oxford has become the most memorable pass-through town of the whole trip for me, simply because of the heat. The fire station doors were wide open and there were tables lined with folks enjoying shade and cooling fans and ice cream. There was an old fire truck parked outside and an open hydrant spraying water across the passing riders (all walking their bikes through town). The final 15 miles to Coralville was miserable but misery shared among thousands. It was hilly and hot and humid (‘feels like 113’). People, including me, were stopping at virtually every hilltop farmhouse to sit in the grass under the trees and to empty water bottles over our heads. Everyone was checking on everyone else for signs of heat stroke. And there were clearly several riders along side the road getting attention (from other cyclists and from occasional ambulances).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I arrived at the Pork Belly camp in Coralville around 3:00. I was not looking forward to pitching my tent in the hot sun, so when I heard that they had opened up more space in the nearby Xtreme Arena for a small donation, I jumped on it. I set up ‘camp’ on the concourse, amidst many others. I didn’t even hear the sirens and commotion outside when the storm arrived two hours later. Strong winds were tossing tents around and sending folks fleeing for the arena (which they had opened for everyone by then). Pork Belly moved the dinner service and the band into the arena which was wonderful (this was still mainly just the Pork Belly crowd, so while it was crowded, it was pretty spread out given the size of the facility. Things were crazier in the main RAGBRAI camps). It was so nice to spend a night in an air conditioned space.
Tumblr media
Saturday (Day 7) was a very early start because of the potential heat and the urgency about getting to Davenport in time to get the afternoon shuttle back to Omaha. Route finding out of Coralville and through Iowa City in the dark at 5:30 was confusing, in part because the route was designed to go through the University of Iowa and Kinnick Stadium, but that wasn’t actually open until 6:00 am and instructions weren’t clear. The 70 miles went fast and was one of the nicest rides of the trip, in part due to cloud cover. We reached the Mississippi River in Muscatine, but then followed it the final 25 miles to Davenport. I stopped for ice cream at a Beekman’s stand along the way and joined others on plastic chairs along the shoulder cheering the crowd as they rode by (in previous days, the lines at Beekman’s had always been prohibitively long and the lack of cloud cover meant little interest in sitting anywhere without shade).
I dipped my wheel in the Mississippi around 11:00 (I’ve never ridden 70 miles by 11:00 am before!). The boat ramp was crowded, but it was only a few minute wait (I heard that by afternoon the line was much, much longer). I took my time riding along the riverfront park - this is where I crossed the Mississippi River in 2019 on my way west. Then it was a mile uphill to the St. Ambrose campus, where Pork Belly was set up. I put my bike on the ‘Stupidity’ trailer, retrieved my bags, visited the shower truck, grabbed a burger and a drink, and made it onto the first (of 8?) coaches headed back to Omaha that afternoon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bus trip was 5-6 hours, all on I-80, but it went by quickly. Everyone was excited about finishing the 7-day ride (and having already ridden 70 miles just that morning). I think we all let our guards down, since I’m pretty sure that’s where I picked up COVID, which I proceeded to share with M and C when I arrived home two days later!
Aside from the heat and the crowds and the lines, RAGBRAI was an amazing experience. I’m really glad I did it. Once. I appreciate that many people will want to do it again and again. But it’s just not the kind of experience I ride for. I like solitude. I like the interaction with locals in their normal lives, not during a traveling festival that has turned their lives upside down for a day. I don’t like heat and mugginess and damp gear that never dries out and sleeping in a tent when the temperature never drops below the high 70s. I’ve always been a bit bugged by the collegiate focus on partying and drinking - which may not accurately characterize most participants, but which was a dominant theme leading up to and during the event. Serving up vodka lemonade slushies in front yards and crowded beer gardens and countless Facebook posts about riding from beer stop to beer stop along the route contributes to this.
I talked to a lot of other riders on this trip. They came from a wide variety of places and personal histories and biking backgrounds. It was a great reminder of how different we all are, in what we’ve done, what we enjoy, and what inspires us, despite the fact that we all share an interest in the same thing and look sort of the same in our Lycra and our helmets.
I spent the week thinking how this ride compared with 2019. That was a tough five days, but if I ever want to ride across Iowa again, that’s the way I’d do it. And while I enjoy the landscapes of the Midwest, I’d rather be riding in the mountains or along the coast, through the forest or in a dramatic urban landscape.

The cursed recruit
By Symon Pude
Chapter 1 - The last day
The door creaked open, morning rays invading our main room. Before my mother and I could shield our eyes, the  silhouette of a man blocked the sun from the door. Cold air pushed inside, fighting the stuffy warmth from the rekindled hearth.
“Close the door,” I said. “You’re letting out the heat.”
The stranger squeezed himself through the entrance, rising to his full height, but the ceiling prevented it. He spread his broad shoulders, rounded by muscles that could crush bones. Few other villagers were taller than me, but this man still dwarfed them all.
I swallowed hard. “Berserker.”
As frightening as his physique were his clothes that slowly revealed themselves as he walked out of line of the light behind him. His long-sleeved gambeson was deep blue, with dark brown plates inset into his chest, shoulders and underarms. The octagonal crest sewn on his chest left no doubt. It was the uniform of a high ranking member of the royal army.
I jumped up, grabbed the broom leaning on the wall and put myself between him and Mother. There were few reasons for a man of his rank to get into our house and none of them were good.
The officer looked down at me with his turquoise eyes. A freshly groomed ash-blond beard and hair of the same colour adorned his head, complementing his tanned skin. An old wound on the left side opened up his tightened lips, revealing white teeth.
"Lay down the broom." His deep voice sounded like the lowing of a stubborn cow. "It won't do you any good in a fight."
The makeshift weapon trembled in my hands. He was right. The only thing I could hope for was that I was able to stall him, hoping that Mother could get far away in the meantime.
The berserker spoke again. "I'm not here to harm you or your family in any way, if you think that for any reason."
"Then why are you here?" I spat. "We're not due any tax."
"A horde of orcs is en route to Forlam. Every able man has to join the army."
I gripped the handle harder. "Not interested. Go away."
"It's the order of the king."
"I don't care, go away."
The man took a step closer, and before I could react, he grabbed the handle of the broom and ripped it out of my hand. I got pulled forward, but the berserker pushed me back against the edge of the table. My fingers traced over the wood, searching for anything that could defend me.
I reached the wooden spoon from breakfast and brought it forward. The berserker looked at the cutlery and grunted. Then he looked up into my face, and his expression changed to one of surprise.
A thin hand laid down on my shoulder.
"Stop," Mother said, then turned to the berserker. "He will join, please forgive his brashness."
"He'd be better off if he keeps it in check." The army official threw away the broom that he still held. "Is there any other man in this household?"
"My father, but his leg is stiff, he can't even walk properly."
The man narrowed his eyes. "Did he get hurt in the Broken War sixteen years ago?"
"Yes. Like most our problems, that was your fault too."
His eyebrows shot up. “Other siblings?”
"None alive."
"I'm sorry."
"I don't need your false sympathy," I said. "I need you to get out."
The intruder sighed. "Tomorrow at dawn, in front of the chapel.”
He pushed his shoulders through the entry. His massive outline slowly moved out of view through the open. A small cut of wind carried in the cold air from outside.
I shivered. “I said close the door, are you stupid or something?”
“Sh, he might still hear you,” Mother shushed me. “Are you trying to get yourself killed? You know it doesn’t end well when you shout at the back of a blue gambeson.”
I sat back down on the bench, which gave a sound like it wanted to break. "Then what else should I do?” I leaned my head back against the wood of the wall. "I can’t go, you need me here. Spring is just around the corner, and somebody has to tend the fields. Father can’t help much."
My mother grabbed my hand and squeezed it. Her skin was as callous as mine, made even rougher by a long winter. "It’ll be fine. I've run this farm alone once before; I can do it again. Plus, I had to take care of two little children then."
I placed my other hand atop of hers. "But you’re older now, and back then, grandmother was alive. "
She let go of my hand and rubbed away the lonely tear, past the quite new scar by her left eye. “At least there’ll be no one to mourn over this time.”
“But no one to help you either.”
“It's no use."
She grabbed both wooden bowls before us, carrying them away.
"Off to a battle, huh?" I said almost to myself. "Maybe the curse will finally catch up with me."
The bowls slipped from Mama's hands and onto the counter. "Don't say that."
I looked down. That had been out of tone.
The typical grunt of my father standing up sounded from the adjacent bedroom. Mother took that as a sign and started sawing some bread. I couldn’t take the scraping sound, taunting me that we couldn’t use the rest of our broadcorn stock, which would be better for baking.
“Have you seen the size of that guy?” I said to cover the noise. “He looks like a boulder that grew legs.”
A raspy voice called from the bedroom, “He's normal height for a berserker.”
Father stumbled into view in the doorframe. His felted, brown hair mirrored mine, except for its extensive gray strains. His angled nose and pointed chin, his unblinking, brown eyes made him look like a hawk. His expression had a seriousness about them, a feeling that he would reach anything he would set his mind to. My face twitched upwards; it was the same look of determination I thought I remembered before he went to military service. A look he had lost for years to bottles of alcohol.
He made his way over to the table, dragging behind his right leg.
With a deep sigh, he sat down on his designated chair, clutching his stiff leg. “You were lucky that he isn't of noble blood. You wouldn’t have survived talking like this to a mage.”
“How would you know all that about that guy?” I asked. “You havent even seen him.”
He averted his gaze, changing the subject. “You might have to pick up the spirit cleansed seeds today.”
“It’s rather soon for that, the equal day hasn’t even passed,” my mother said, putting the slices of bread in front of my father.
"He’s right,” I said. “Or would you want to take the trip on your own?”
“No.” Mother admitted.
“I will go in the afternoon." I stood up. Until then, I’m in the backfield, ploughing.”
My father spoke with his mouth full of dry bread. “I’ll join you when I’m finished.”
My mom said, “Just wear something warm, I don’t want you freezing your ass off.”
“Yeah, sure.”
I walked to the door, the freeze from outside pouring in. I reached out for the thick wool tunic, which reached to about the centre of my thighs, but changed my mind and grabbed my surcoat instead. The expertly sewn cow hide protected from wind, rain and snow. After years of use, the hairs were already peeled off in most places, revealing a lighter colour. With leather pants, tunic and surcoat, one could even go out for hours in the winter. As the only layer above the shirt, the coat might just be right for today. I secured the coat with a belt and fixed a waterskin and a belt pouch to it.
The door creaked again as I closed it behind me. I turned my head upwards and closed my eyes. The rays of the sun tingled on my face; the slight breeze was barely noticeable. Still, the chill of the morning seeped through my clothes.
I sighed and made my  way towards the stable, stopping at the overflowing rain barrel to fill up the water skin. I took a swig of the water, but broke the contact immediately. The freeze hammered into my forehead, making me squeal in pain. I gripped the side of the barrel, my knuckles white. When the feeling wore off, I took another gulp. The second time, the feeling was manageable.
Heaving a sigh, I walked to our pasture. The cows, sheeps, blood hens, the rooster and the old donkey Ratter all lifted their heads when they saw me. One animal was missing. I found the almost black hen back in its usual place behind the stable door. She trembled a little when I picked her up. The veins under the translucent skin on her face showed a panicked pulse. I threw her to the other animals . The red hens charged her and the bird scuttered away back to the stable door. I sighed again and whistled for Ratter. The old donkey perked up and hoofed over without any hurry. I stroked him between his eyes, as his warm breath blew from his mouth.
"Now, Ratter. Do you wanna get ploughing?"
A bobbing of his head and a positive Eee-Ah might seem like he was happy to, but he acted the same to everything else.
"At least one of us."
I led him into the stable and hitched the old, trustworthy plough behind him. The field I thought of working on today was not big, but at an uncomfortable incline that had flipped the plough more than once.
I stopped Ratter as we ploughed closest to the border of a forest of conifers and deciduous trees.
A patch of snowdrop flowers broke the monotone ground. I picked one of the flowers and put it in my pocket.
When I turned around, I stopped for a minute. From here one had a great view of rolling hills patched with fields, meadows and forests. The plants still wore their drab, brownish winter colours. In the shadow of some trees, old snow remained. A gust of wind shot into my clothes and made me shiver.
“I should’ve listened to my mother.”
I looked further. Smoke rose from the chimneys of the few lonely farmers’ houses that were Hazelbrook. The white walls of the chapel stuck out like a weed on a freshly ploughed field. Ratter puffed, sending his warm, moist breath on my skin. I rubbed him between the eyes.
“I’m leaving, you know?”
The old donkey just puffed again.
A frown appeared on my face. “I don’t know if you’ll still be around when I come back.”
"Eee-ah."
"Me too, buddy, me too."
My father stumbled out, and I stood back up to continue ploughing before he could join me.
The next time I looked up to the sky, the sun had passed noon. I nodded to my father and led Ratter back to the stable. A few minutes later, the donkey pulled our one-axled cart. I sat down on it beside a shovel, and Ratter hoofed forward slowly. We stopped at the house, where I switched my surcoat for the tunic. I went back out, past the cart, to the eight poles driven into the earth beside the path. A year of weather had done a number on them, and I added it to my list to replace them; they won't be forgotten. I fished out the snowdrop, only two pedals on, and placed it next to the fourth pole. “Sorry, it looks a little tattered.”
Hannah loved flowers. It has been sixteen years since her death, almost twice as long as she had lived. Still, the memory of her face stayed in my mind, hopefully forever.
I finally turned away and jumped back onto the cart. Ratter continued on the old path, past the overgrown remains of a small house and towards Hazelbrook. Though the old donkey's steps were slow, the cart jumped up and down, threatening to break at any moment.  I had to hold the shovel beside me, so it wouldn't jump all over the place.
A sudden jolt threw me against the railing, hitting the wood with my elbow. I let out a short cry of pain. The right side of the cart had sacked down, and although Ratter tried to continue, the cart wouldn't move.
I ignored the pain and jumped off to look at the issue. The right wheel got stuck in a muddy hole between two stones.
“For fuck’s sake.” I kicked the cart. “Stupid wheel.”
The same thing every year after winter; the path had never survived the snow. I looked out further. This time it was especially bad, with more holes than path. I had been tempted to just let it grow over and have the tax collectors deal with it, but we needed the path more often than them.
"Stupid tax collectors," I said, then grabbed the spokes of the wheel and pulled upwards. The muscles in my arms groaned as the wheel lifted out of the hole. My fingers slipped; the wheel fell back down. Without the weight, I lost my balance, and I fell back on the wet grass beside the path.
“Stupid cart.”
I worked myself to my feet, brushing off the plant bits from my behind.
A triumphant horn echoed through the early spring landscape. I turned to the sound. The army had arrived in Hazelbrook.
"Mighty soon here, aren't they?"
I leaned against the stuck cart and watched the procession coming from the east. The lead were horse riders in royal army blue, followed by a number of carriages in a single file line. Then came foot soldiers clad in blue; enlisted, men who spend a year or more in the employ of the army.
"Idiots," I said and helped myself to a handful of nuts from my belt pouch.
As the army went along, fewer people wore a coloured uniform, instead opting for utilitaristic brown clothes. These recruits made up the bulk of the procession. Recruits taken from their home. From tomorrow, I'd be one of them. A few people carried their belongings on the back, some rolled a barrel in front of them, and again others brought a mule or a donkey.
I looked at Ratter. Our old donkey wouldn't survive such a long journey, so I would be carrying my stuff on my own.
While the army continued on their way, I focused on getting the cart out of the mud again. I fetched the shovel from the cart. Using it as a lever, I freed the wagon from the hole, which I filled with a stones by the side of the path. I had to stop a few times for repairs on the path so we wouldn't get stuck again on the last stretch to Hazelbrook. As the path got better - a road now - and I passed by the first houses, the chatter got louder. The villagers had come out of their houses to greet the new arrivals. I sighed; the worst time to come here. And I had to travel on the main road to the seed stock as well.
The familiar faces of the locals seemed more bony than when I last saw them. Beside the villagers, small pockets of unknown men milled around, having stopped before reaching the camp at the other side of town. Some wore the army's uniform, most others tunics and leather pants just like mine. I scoffed. Not exactly like mine. Mine was covered with careful stitches that showed their age.
Like many Hazelbrookers, most of the men had either a darker complexion or a greyish tint to them. With one notable exception; A strange, pale man leaned against the side of the only tavern in our village. His pristine, leather cloak was too thick for the temperature and he seemed as still as a statue, not a muscle moving in his body. He stared at me, and I stared back.
A jolt went through the cart, breaking our eye contact. Ratter had stopped before hitting a tiny girl who had wandered onto the street. I jumped off the carriage and faced her. She looked up at me with unblinking eyes. She was the daughter of a farmer, the father only a year older than me, and now she was already five winters old. For a second, both of us were still.
I stretched out my tongue and crossed my eyes for a silly face. The small girl let out a refreshing laugh. I smiled, but as soon as I uncrossed my eyes, my cheeks fell down again.
The girl's mother dragged her off the dirt street, throwing me a disapproving look. I evaded her stare, choosing to focus on the road instead. A barrel of a recruit had broken into pieces a bit further along, and a group of men scrambled to pick up all belongings.
"Stupid soldiers," I swore under my breath. For now, I'd be stuck here.
In an instant, disapproving looks from the locals focussed on me. I The mother of the girl in the street knelt down and berated her. "I don't want you to talk to that person."
"But why?"
"You would die," the mother said.
The little girl started crying and hugged her mother, who carried her away. They disappeared in the crowd, and the other villagers stepped forward to protect as if I would come at the little girl with a knife.
I climbed back onto the cart, trying to ignore the looks. A few recruits had noticed the commotion, and I didn't know how they would act.
"Greet the Maker," a voice started with the formal greeting. "I believe we have not yet met."
I turned to see a young man standing by my cart. His bluish skin and the blue down feathers above his ears showed him to be of gargoyle blood. He wore a black robe with the crest of the church sown in at the centre of his chest; a red octagon around a red hand on a white background. He put a hand on the crest, which revealed a belly under his robe.
"I am the new ceremon in Hazelbrook," he said. "And you are?"
I took another handful of nuts from my pouch and started eating, one by one. All the while, I did not look once at the man of religion.
"We will celebrate a small ceremony in the evening to ask for the maker's protection for the recruits," the ceremon continued. "I know your family has not heeded the weekly call, but it would be great if I saw you there."
"Ceremon Altone, nobody of us wants him anywhere near the chapel," a woman's voice said.
The ceremon turned to the grey-haired woman, the waitress of the tavern.
"Now now, Silvia," he said. "Samoht taught us that nobody is too wayward to get back on the right path."
"He's got the curse of death upon his head. Don't get too close or you'll be caught in it."
"A curse?" The ceremon walked away from my cart. "Preposterous, there is no such…"
"It's true," an old woman at a table said. "Every last one around them dies before their time. Seven children they had, five dead in birth, one has not seen ten winters, he's left. Their neighbour burned alive,..."
"And even their dog doesn't bark anymore," her husband added, mulling over his ale. "I tell you, they were all sacrifices for the grey demons to let their crops grow tall."
My hand formed into a fist. I had to put Bello out of his misery last fall after a wild animal attack. His whine still rang in my mind from time to time. And they say I wanted to do this?
"If what you are saying is true," the ceremon said with doubt in his voice. "Then why is he still alive?"
"He should have died a few years ago," the waitress said. "Hanged for the murder of Britta, the eldest daughter of the Hahn family. He pushed her off that tower to her death. It doesn't matter what the army inspector said, we all know it was him."
I pursed my lips and checked the street. Finally, they have cleared the path, and I tapped Ratter's behind to get us away.
As the cart got moving, they still discussed further. "I still suspect that the farm hand they had was actually that priestess-rapist from Sunhill."
I scoffed. That one was the only one that had a bit of merit. Yrgal was not a rapist, though. If a priestess and a monk were caught together in bed, they would both be punished, except one takes all the blame on him. His love repaid him by slipping him a key to escape. And it wasn't a priestess, it was a priest.
I still vividly remembered how we plastered hair on Yrgal’s bald head to trick those that searched for him. In return for our help, he taught me things that no other farmer knew.
As I pondered in the memory of my friend and teacher, Ratter pulled me past all other bystanders to a wooden hut not far from the soldiers' camp, where some soldiers were building up their two-men tents.
The old donkey stopped right before the seed stock. I jumped off, turned the animal with the cart around and walked to the hut. An ancient man slept on the ground, wrapped in blankets. Joseph had already been old when I had been just a young boy. Although senile, he oversaw giving away the seeds. He was the only one in the village who could - officially - read highfont, save for maybe the new ceremon.
"Wake up, Sepp!" I called to the old man.
No reaction. He lay there, not moving at all, making me think he finally kicked the bucket. But, as I came closer, his chest was still heaving up and down.
"Wake up!" I nudged him with my boot.
He jerked awake. "What? Who?"
"I'd like to take my share of seeds."
"Isn't it a little too early?"
"It's afternoon," I extended my hand, so he could stand up.
He sighed in exhaustion, pushed his blankets off and heaved himself on his feet. He stood wary, threatening to fall over any second. "No, I mean early in the year."
"I know. But I have to join the army tomorrow."
"The army is already here?"
"They just arrived and were not silent in doing so. How did you miss this?"
He narrowed his eyes as he looked at the tents. "Aha, what do you know? So, what are you doing here?"
"Getting my share of seeds."
"Isn't it a little early for that?"
"Yes." I gave a smile.
He staggered for a moment before he continued. "Okay, then let's take a look at the list."
I picked up the big, leather-bound book he had used as a pillow, before the old man even tried to.
He took it from my hand. "Thank you."
He set the book to the small table that stood by the stock. He opened the index and turned filled page by page until he got to a page which was almost empty. I skimmed through the column of the table and found the symbol for my name within a few seconds. Joseph took longer; almost pressing his eyes to the page, he searched for the information. I took the time to look around in the stock for the things I could take with me.
Joseph tapped on the paper. "Ah, there we go. So, you can take...two bags of longseeds."
I checked the list again. "That's a three."
"Where's a tree?"
"No, I mean the number is a three."
He squinted at the writing. "Oh, right, my mistake. Thanks for pointing it out. You should be standing here, not me."
I took a look around. Luckily nobody was in earshot. If anyone found out I could read, they might find out about Yrgal, and punish the people who harboured the apostate monk.
The old man didn’t seem to care, or he had forgotten already. He went into the low room and pointed at three yute sacks with the church's crest printed on. “Take these."
I bent my knees and wrapped each arm around the bags. Taking in a short breath, I heaved them on my shoulders.
I carried them out of the stock house, while Joseph babbled on, “I heard that it’s a horde of orcs again that we’re fighting. Can you imagine they’re so stupid as to attack the capital?”
I grunted as I put the sacks on my cart. “No, I can’t.”
The old man’s rambling followed me a second time to the storage room. “Stupid green beasts. Do they really think they have a chance after we defeated them only a few years back?”
My reply was another gasp as I yanked a sack of longcorn and one of broadcorn on my shoulders. With the direct comparison, it was clear that the latter was lighter.
Joseph stopped me. "Hey, that's not longcorn, put it back."
"But I know that I definitely also get a bag of broadcorn. This makes it faster."
"Put it back!"
I sighed and did as he said.
After I loaded the third bag of longcorn on the carriage, Joseph read the next column. "Broadcorn, two bags."
I stared at him for a moment, before I made a heavy sigh and loaded two bags onto the carriage.
Josef continued reading. "And one bag of peas."
"Only one? In the last few years, we always got two in the beginning."
"Are you questioning the decision of the church?"
Yes.
I smacked my lips. "No."
Silently, I took the designated bag. On my last trip into the stock house, I could take smaller amounts of other seeds. With them in one hand, I said, "Bye, Joseph."
"What?"
I just waved him goodbye. He did the same and lay down on the floor again.
As I turned to the cart, the pale man from before now leaned against the wheel of the cart, eerily still. Even as I closed in, he didn’t show any intentions of moving. I examined the man further.
His thick leather cloak hid his body form, though the slight bulge around his waist hinted at a sword. A deep blue gambeson and wool lining peeked out at his sleeve. His hair was black, with only a few signs of grey in it, his slender face clean shaven. Slight wrinkles gave him a look of experience, while still retaining some youthfulness. I guessed he was around his late forties though it was hard to tell. His orange eyes seemed to glow on their own. I made a second take. The shine might have been a trick of the light, but what was even more strange were his vertically slit pupils. Now that I looked for it, I found other abnormalities. At his collar and at his wrists, his skin turned reddish. He had to be a member of a magical race, one that I had forgotten the name of.
“Can you move?” I said while putting the last seeds on the cart. “That’s my wagon you’re leaning on.”
The man unfroze, reaching into the pocket of his coat. With one quick movement, he produced a decimetre long, thin, porcelain tube with a small circular compartment at the end. The strange pipe had a gleaming white coating, with a sky-blue floral pattern. With his right hand, he took out a small pouch, and filled some dried leaves into the compartment. He pushed them down with the index finger of his left hand and put the pipe in his mouth.
I pointed in the direction of the army camp. “You could easily struggle to light the tabak just a few metres that way and not bother me.”
As soon as I said it, thin smoke streamed out from the pipe, while his finger was still in. His eyebrow went up just a little bit.
I narrowed my eyes at the smoke. “How…”
“Apple?” The man mumbled with the pipe still on his lips. His raspy voice had an authoritative undertone.
My head fell down and I noticed that he now held out a yellow apple with his right hand. I struggled for words at the sudden offer, and my stomach growled due to the lack of lunch.
“No,” I said finally. “My mother told me to not take food from strangers.”
“Good point.” With one quick motion he pocketed the fruit.
“What do you want?”
The man breathed away a stream of smoke. "The other villagers say you're cursed because your family members died."
Hate welled up in my chest. "Why would you care?”
He took another whiff from his pipe. "I wonder if they are right."
"Maybe they are,” I said. “So you better get away from me before you die as well.”
He ignored me. "It's most likely 'hogwash', as a farmer like you would call it. It's not too uncommon that a woman struggles to birth alive children, especially if that woman does not have a drop of magical blood. Is your mother human, through and through?"
"Is your mother a donkey considering how stubborn you are? Fuck off already."
"Hmm," He blew smoke over, and did not move an inch. "Do you have any special talents? Strength, good eyesight, a talent for swimming?"
“I was never in water deep enough.”
The hint of a smile appeared on the strange man's face. "Good."
“I’m getting tired of this.” I turned away and started walking homeward.
"What about your cart?"
I whistled, and Ratter started walking.
The man lost his balance from the sudden movement of his support. His pipe fell from his lips and raced to the ground. He jumped forward, catching the object, but hit the street hard.
"You damn..." he swore.
I skipped further, Ratter barely catching up to me. I let out a small laugh, which caused many of the bystanders to look at me in fearful concern.
When I was back on the path home, I stopped Ratter. It was a little early to plant seeds, and Mother and Father would profit more from a well maintained path. I took the shovel and got to work.
When I was back at home, the sun was close to the horizon. Back at Hazelbrook, the army men were in their camp, while the locals grouped up to go into the chapel.
I stored away the seeds in our storage. Despite what the church wanted, we won't use their blessed seeds for our field; seeds from last year's harvest sprouted more plentifully in our soil.
Then I tended to the animals in the last light and said my goodbyes. Some of them would die before I’d come back in one- or two-years’ time.
When I went back inside, a savory smell hit my nostrils, coming from the cast iron pot in the middle of the table. Father sat by the table, with short hair and close to no beard now. Mother stood beside one of the chairs, with shears in her hand.
“Smells good like always" I said.
“Rabbit stew, a hare went into the trap,” Mother said, pushing me down on a chair close to the entrance. “But first we need to take care of your unruly mane.”
“For what reason? Nobody cares how I look. Not even me.”
Mother ignored me, and started to cut along my scalp. “Who knows? Maybe you’ll find a nice girl to bring home on your journey.”
“I already found a nice girl years ago.”
My mother didn’t comment. She continued cutting my hair and then moved on to my beard.
When she finished, she took a step back and looked at me. "See, if you're groomed properly, you are quite a handsome young man."
I scoffed. There were many things that one could use to describe me; handsome was not one of them. With the same pointy chin and hawk-like nose, I looked like a copy of my father, save his wrinkles and warts that undoubtedly would come with time.
"Thanks, mum."
I stood up and joined my father at the table. Mother scooped some of the steaming stew into my bowl.
I took a spoonful and moaned at the taste. It could have used more salt, but that’s a luxury we didn’t have. I finished my first bowl with a side of the hard bread and took seconds, the pot still not empty.
“This could’ve fed us for days,” I said while putting another spoonful in my mouth.
“Yes, but I just…” my mother’s voice broke as she struggled for words. “I thought you’d like it as a last meal at home.”
I looked into her brown eyes. “I guess it’s only a little battle on the other side of the map. I should be back within a year.”
The sombre silence settled between us again.
After the meal, my mother went to sleep, and I washed the pot and the bowls with the rainwater outside. When I went back in, my father still sat at the table.
“Sit down, son.”
“I still need to pack my stuff.”
"I already prepared that for you."
He pointed at the corner, where clothes, provisions and other things I might need on the journey lay beside the rucksack we normally use to carry tools.
“Please, sit down.”
I sighed and slid back on the bench.
He started, "The battlefield is a place you will wish you’d never come to."
My hand formed into a fist. I knew this spiel. "Are you drunk again? Are you also going to claim again that you punted the allmage?"
A line formed between his brows and his jaw clenched. "No." He stared deep into my eyes. "I know I normally only talked about the war when I've had a few, but now, I'm sober and you need to listen to me so you're aware what will come for you. The battle is chaos, pain, and loss. I've seen some of my bravest friends freeze at the sheer sight of it. And that cost them their lives."
He reached for my hand. "You will have to make difficult decisions within a heartbeat. Spare a man, and he will drag you to the floor. Kill him, and you'd live your whole life with the tears of his family.  Give your life for the lives of others,..." He sighed. "Maker knows that I and my company didn't always choose right."
His eyes reflected the horrors he had seen. "In the end, you can only come home and hope everything will be alright."
I remained silent. He didn't even get this luxury.
He reached under the table and took out a bottle of schnapps and put it on the table between us. I stared at him, anger welling up inside me.
"Don't worry," he said. "This is my promise to you. It doesn't matter how hard it's going to get; this bottle will stay closed. And when you come back, we can decide what to do with it."
I looked in his eyes and gave him a small nod.
My old man pushed himself up, grunting when putting weight on his hurt leg. "Don't be too long. You have long days ahead of you."
With these words he stumbled to the sleeping room, leaving me alone at the table.
Before long, I stood up, took the candle holder and made my way over to the things my father had prepared for me:
My spare clothes, a water skin, provisions like bread, sausage, eggs and carrots for a few days, patches and threads and a needle for repairs, shears to cut my beard,...
The only things missing were my knife, and the tunic that I still wore. I put all of them into the rucksack, then tested its weight. Manageable.
My eyes fell on the patch in the pattern of a flower on the rucksack. I traced my fingers around it. The leather of the patch was a bit softer, I hoped it and the seam would survive the journey. I breathed out of my nose and took my hand off again.
It was time to go to sleep. The tall candle had shrunk significantly, only a few minutes of dim light left. Just enough time to check something.
Instead of going to rest, I fetched a chair to reach the books stored away on the top of the cupboard. ‘Books’ was a generous term; they were collections of self-made parchment pages bound in shoddy leather. I took the one on the very bottom of the stack and carried it over to the table. Carefully, I opened the cover. The first page stuck to it, and when I freed it, the edge of the brittle parchment broke off.
In the candlelight, a rudimentary map of the kingdom appeared, as well as Yrgal could draw it from memory on the uneven parchment. Hazelbrook lay far to the east, Sunhill just a bit further west. That was the farthest I’d been in my life. I traced my fingers further along the indicated street. Not far after, there was a city called ‘Arkyras’, the seat of our baron. Then, the path continued along the coast of the Granaq river, which turned southward as if to escape the massive forest that made up the centre of the map. Eventually, the Granaq reached the city of Torza, where it turned westward again, past the city of Eugenia, to Westpass. From there, the road turned north, along another river to Forlam, the capital of the Kingdom. Simply going there would take months, and going back would take just as long.
I sighed and flipped to the next page. With effort, I deciphered the heading in the highfont symbol.
Naiad
Thankfully, the more common name of the race was written beside it in simple script.
Gargoyle
I turned the page. I knew enough of the blue skinned people with down feathers above their ears.
I turned the next few pages as well. Zivot, dwarf, berserker, elf, orc,... I knew the strange man I’d met today was none of those.
The next page spoke about ‘Albos’.
‘White hair, red eyes,...”
As soon as I started to read the first line, I knew that was not it either.
That left the last page. The highfont on this page was even less readable. I remembered, this was around the time when Yrgal taught me to write.
Squinting as hard as I could at the page in the low light, I deciphered the symbol on top.
“Souvra,” I said.
At that moment, the candle finally died down, leaving me in the dark.
“Damn it.”
If there was still time tomorrow, I’d need to read further in the morning. I yawned at the unusual time. I placed myself on the coarse straw and pulled the wool blanket over me.

*crawls over completely exhausted* No Canon Lukanette... Need fluff... maybe salt too...
Luka gave Marinette's parents a smile as he waited for Marinette to come downstairs, though to say he was concerned was an understatement. He and Marinette hadn't been dating for long, but he knew something was wrong due to her song singing even more stress-filled notes than usual. He wanted to talk to her about it, but also wanted her to open up to him herself when she was ready.
Wanting to focus on smiling for her when she came down, Luka shook off the thought and stared up at Marinette's trap door. Seeing that she hadn't come down yet - understandable given that she had no idea he was there - he pulled out his phone and navigated to her contact. However, just before he could tap on it, there was an abrupt, loud, and unusual noise coming from Marinette's room, followed by the sound of Marinette yelping and presumably hitting the floor.
Luka gasped. “Marinette!”
Not even thinking, he hurried upstairs, phone clutched tightly in his hand as he pushed the trap door up and let himself in.
Over a dozen tiny kwami were speeding around her room, each with distinct voices and one of whom he recognized as Sass. He'd initially thought that the Liberty was chaos, and it was, but there was something different about fifteen little melodies all moving around simultaneously and wreaking havoc. They hadn't even seemed to notice that he was there.
There was also a ladybug-patterned ellipsoid lying on the table in the middle of it all, though Luka's eyes fixated mostly on Marinette lying there on the floor, now staring at him with wide eyes as he took in the whole situation.
"L-luka!" she greeted, voice forced. "W-what a surprise! I mean, you must be surprised at my toy collection! See, there's—there’s this magnetism thing going on that lets them seem like they're flying and—"
She was cut off as one of the kwami accidentally dropped something to the floor, making her flinch from the loud noise. Even the sound all around the room was overwhelming, the little beings ignoring Marinette’s panic in favor of playing with her things.
That's when the tears started, subtly at first until Marinette let out a whimper.
Ignoring all the revelations he just went through, Luka hurried to Marinette's side, helping her up and checking her for injuries. "Marinette, are you okay—"
"You know!" she cut in, running her fingers anxiously through her hair. "You're not supposed to know!"
He took a breath, recognizing that he was going to have to deal with these revelations now. "It's okay. I promise, I'd never—"
"No, it's not okay!" she argued, throwing her hands out. "I've been guardian for just a few days and this—this isn't—! I already—and now the kwami are out—!" She slumped and dropped her gaze to the floor, ashamed. "I'm a bad guardian. I'm a bad girlfriend. I couldn't protect you from knowing!"
"Marinette, you're not a bad girlfriend. You—" He paused, something occurring to him. "Protect me...?"
He hadn't been Viperion for long, but Luka remembered the importance given to secret identities. He understood that it was a form of protecting oneself and one's loved ones, meaning that a permanent hero like Ladybug needed to keep hers a secret the most.
"Is..." His stomach twisted in knots as he remembered all the dates she'd had to either miss or postpone. He bent down, trying to look at her face, and when he still couldn't, he gently cupped her face and encouraged her to make eye contact with him. "Is that why—"
"Yes! That's why I have to keep cutting our dates short, and not being there for you, and not going on patrols with Chat, and why I haven't had time to take those stupid Adrien pictures down! I can't do anything right!"
At some point, the volume of her voice had finally drawn the attention of the kwami, who all stared at her like children watching their parent having a breakdown and feeling awkward about it. Luka paid them no mind, his heart breaking as he processed all the information Marinette was telling him while all he could do was pull her into a hug and just hold her.
"I'm sorry I found out like this," he admitted, running his hand up and down along her back. "I'm glad that I know but I would've wanted you to share that secret with me instead."
"I-I'm sor—"
"Please don't apologize, Marinette," he gently begged. "I hate hearing songs with meanings I don't agree with. You don't have anything to feel sorry for. If I had the ladybug earrings instead, I would've had to do the same thing as you, and you wouldn't have asked me to apologize, would you?"
She looked up at him, expression pained and full of so many burdens that he couldn't believe he hadn't seen before. He brushed her fringe aside and rested his palm against her forehead, concerned about how pale she seemed and worried that she'd stress herself to a cold.
She leaned into his touch, then further until he was forced to move his hand away. She buried her face in his chest, surprising him as she hugged him tightly. Her song turned from the harsh wail of an electric guitar to the mellow tones of an acoustic, and he sighed in a mixture of relief and happiness.
"...Luka," she murmured, lightly clutching whatever fabric she could reach. "The movie. We'll miss it at this rate."
He hummed, half in response to what she said and half in content. "You're so much more important than the movie."
His heart skipped a beat when she actually giggled, her grip on him loosening and the hug turning to something she did because she wanted to, not for comfort. "More important than Jagged Stone?"
He chuckled, burying his face into her hair as he returned the hug. "Always. Even my idol can't compete with my muse."
She leaned further into him, her melody picking up hints off a bell chiming happily. She almost knocked him over from how much of her weight she was putting on him, but he didn't protest and even enjoyed it; it meant she was trusting him with her secrets instead of shouldering the weight herself.
"I know I couldn't have known," he began, "but I'm sorry that our dates took up your time. I never wanted to cause you any stress."
"But I wanted to!" she insisted, jolting up to look at him. "It's just—it's been a lot, and—"
He placed two fingers against her lips before she could start rambling. "Marinette, I don't need to go on normal dates to have fun with you."
She blinked, waiting for him to move his fingers before asking, "Y-you don't?"
He smiled. "Of course not. I can hang out here while you work, while you do important stuff."
With a small, amused snort, she pulled away from him and wiped any stray tears away. "You're 'important stuff.'"
He grinned like the love-struck fool that he was, then shrugged. "Well, I'll still be here anyway then, right?"
"That's true." She paused, glancing off to the side in consideration, then looked back at him as she asked, "in that case... would you help me with something?"
"Anything," he answered immediately.
She pointed, his gaze drawn to her wall full of Adrien pictures. "Like I said, I haven't had the time, and... I've been wanting to remodel forever."
He was more than happy to help, and there was a selfish part of him that considered it far better than any movie they could've seen.
—————
It took a bit more time than either of them anticipated to take down all of the images, but between the two of them, it wasn't a hard job. The biggest time-waster during the whole thing was Marinette's rambling, but Luka welcomed it wholeheartedly.
Due to not watching much TV, he honestly hadn't heard about what'd happened when Jagged Stone had been at the bakery and the camera crew had invaded Marinette's privacy, and he couldn't believe how much mental stress she must've gone through. After all, even though he and Juleka shared a room, there was still a divider for when they needed their privacy, so he wasn't unaware about how personal it was to have one's room recorded without their consent, even if nothing embarrassing got caught on camera.
It seemed cruel to know that Paris' supposedly lucky superhero was perhaps one of the unluckiest people he'd ever known.
Almost on cue, just when the last picture was down and Marinette was debating on what to do with them, her phone went off with a ringtone that sounded very much like danger. Looking over, there was a butterfly symbol flashing on the screen and Marinette's expression faltered at the sight of it.
"Akuma alert," she said flatly, with a pout that would've been cute had he not known what it meant. She hesitated, eyes flicking from him to her phone. "Um... look, I... I have to—"
"Go," he interrupted with a reassuring smile. "I'm not going anywhere, and I'll be here when you're done."
"But—" She frowned and glared at her phone, clearly knowing that she had to leave but not wanting to.
"I mean it, Marinette. It's okay."
She looked at him like she'd never heard those words from anyone else before, eyes vulnerable but fond. She gave him a nod, a brief smile flickering across her face before she turned away and rushed to the stairs. She shouted for her transformation on the way out and Luka watched as her clothes shifted into her ladybug-patterned bodysuit.
When she was completely gone, Luka felt a sudden unsteadiness and leaned against the table for support. It wasn't that he was shocked exactly to hear that Marinette was Ladybug, but he was still overloaded nonetheless.
As his hand rested on the table, he felt the heel of his palm brush something and looked down to see the pile of Adrien pictures next to him. It sent another rush through his body at the reminder that she'd asked him to help her take them down. He was dating her, sure, but he wasn't foolish enough to think that there were no lingering feelings for Adrien. He knew where she stood and he was okay letting her test the waters with him, as she did have feelings for him and who was he to complain if his crush wanted to date him? Besides, he couldn't help wanting to see if maybe it would truly make their bond stronger.
Looking at the wall now, clear of anything but the pink paint, he knew this was real and ended up wishing he'd brought his guitar.
Then, remembering the akuma alert on Marinette's phone, Luka pulled out his own and began to search, eventually finding what she already had: a direct link to watch streams and updates on whatever akuma or sentimonster shenanigans were going on. He knew well enough that he would only give himself anxiety from it, but he wanted to watch his girlfriend in action as a form of support.
Gosh, Ladybug was his girlfriend.
He took a deep breath to steady himself as he watched the footage, his eyes locked to the screen and only shifting when he felt various figures drawing close. He looked up to see that the kwami had all gathered around him, watching the screen closely.
"So..." the pig-looking kwami began, fiddling with their own paws like they knew they were being awkward. "Have you ever wanted to be a hero?"
There was a hiss off to the side, Sass cutting in with, "He already has me."
Luka wasn't feeling up to smile at that, debating with himself before sighing. "Marinette works really hard, and her song is full of sour notes right now," he said. Stepping away and heading for the chaise lounge, he sat down and added, "I hope you can figure out how to rewrite them."
The kwami all exchanged looks, some confused by the metaphor and others who perhaps understood but didn't know how to follow up on it. Luka didn't give them his attention, focusing on the akuma battle playing on his phone.
As he'd expected, it made him a little nervous actually seeing Ladybug in action due to now knowing it was his girlfriend fighting out there. He believed in her abilities and mentally cheered her on, but he just kept remembering all the akuma he'd known about and how stressful it had to have been.
Off to the side, some of the kwami joined forces to help pick up some of the items they'd previously dropped on the floor. It was only after Marinette's room looked as it did before that they properly joined Luka to watch the battle with him.
It was a start.
—————
The battle between Ladybug and the akuma (and Chat Noir was there he supposed) seemed to be getting into its final verse when Luka heard the sound of the trap door being grabbed and clicked open, making him jump. He was only able to whisper a, "Hide," so the kwami could act before Sabine peered inside the room and took a curious look around.
Apparently, they all thought that huddling against his back was a great hiding spot, and he could only smile sheepishly at Sabine while attempting to ignore the weird feeling.
"You're still here?" Sabine asked. "I thought you were going somewhere, and..." She raised a brow, looking around once more. "Where's Marinette?"
"Ah," Luka began, his mind rushing for an excuse, "we actually decided to have our date here instead. Marinette just went up to her balcony to grab something."
It didn't feel good to lie, though he also felt a sense of accomplishment in protecting Marinette's secret. Was this what Marinette dealt with all the time; having to lie to people even if she didn't want to?
Sabine glanced up briefly to where the balcony was, then back to him, slightly confused but rolling with it. "Alright. Do you two need anything?"
"No, ma'am. Thank you though," he replied, hoping it didn't sound forced.
Thankfully, Sabine nodded and left without asking any further questions, the kwami emerging and clinging to Luka while they peered at the now-closed trap door. Luka breathed a sigh of relief, then went back to watching the akuma battle on his phone.
The rest of the fight took a couple minutes, and all that was left to do afterward was wait for Ladybug to return. Once again, Luka wished he had his guitar, making a mental note to get all of his feelings out when he got home, as typical music apps just didn't do anything for him.
An expected "thump" eventually came from the balcony, and the kwami drifting away from Luka as Ladybug descended and landed on her bed. She saw Luka staring at her and initially flinched, but it was clearly a reflex from people seeing her as Ladybug where she shouldn't be, and she hurried down to meet with him afterward. Luka hopped to his feet, not hesitating to meet her halfway and envelop her in a hug, earning a squeak out of her.
"L-luka?"
"Sorry," he murmured. "Just... I got to think about everything you must've gone through without m—" He choked off, suddenly embarrassed, then corrected, "—someone to help you."
She blinked, then giggled and hugged him back. "You're my boyfriend. You're apologizing for hugging me and being worried about sounding selfish?" She nestled her face against his shoulder and he blushed at how warm she was. "Don't. I like it when you're a little selfish, Luka. It grounds me; makes me feel like you're not totally out of my league."
Luka scoffed, nuzzling his head against hers. "You're in a league all your own. I'm literally dating a superhero."
"Trust me, it's not as cool as it sounds."
"I disagree. I think you're really cool."
She blushed profusely. "H-hey..."
He chuckled. "By the way, your mom came to check up on us."
Ladybug gasped, then pulled back, eyes wide and concerned. She was clearly about to apologize, so he cut her off before she could.
"I told her that we were having our date here and that you were getting something from the balcony. Everything's alright."
Her shoulders eased. She let out a sigh of relief as her head fell back against his shoulder. "Thank you."
He hummed contently, resting his hand along her back and keeping it there. Then, realizing when Sabine came up earlier and might do it again, he reminded her, "You're still Ladybug."
"Huh? ...Oh!" she said, though with less panic than normal and unwilling to recoil from the happy spot she was in.
He heard the whisper of her de-transformation phrase and winced as the light engulfed her, slowly turning her back into Marinette. He felt the spandex under his hand turn into fabric and Marinette's breath against his skin as she exhaled.
A kwami that Luka deduced was Marinette's flew a small distance away, eyeing Luka warily and semi-critically. Luka didn't blame her - he wasn't supposed to know - but he also knew that it was far too late to change anything now, and there was no way he was going to abandon Marinette or pretend he knew nothing. He imagined that the kwami knew that too.
"...I'm Tikki," the kwami greeted finally. "It's nice to meet you officially, Luka."
Luka gave her a nod in return, then stiffened somewhat as Marinette squeezed him tighter, burying her face further against him like she truly cherished him.
"It's still a lot," she whispered. "Is it okay if you hug me a little longer?"
"Of course." Though, he paused for a moment before adding, "Would it be more comfortable for you if we move to your chaise?"
"Hm?" She pulled away just enough to look down and realize that they were still awkwardly standing at the bottom of the steps to her bed. "Oh! Yeah, I mean—I didn't even—"
"Hey." He tenderly cupped her cheek, offering a smile. "I didn't complain, did I?"
She looked briefly surprised, making him wonder just how much she'd had to apologize in the past. They slowly made their way over to the chaise lounge, Luka settling down and opening his arms for her so she could settle onto his lap and snuggle against him. He leaned back against the chaise, throwing his legs across the length of it, then wrapped an arm around Marinette to make her feel secure.
"This is nice. It's... um—" She peeked up at him, then grinned shyly. "—melodic? Is that what you'd call it?"
He couldn't stop himself from snorting.
Marinette blushed in embarrassment. "H-hey! I'm trying, okay?"
"I know." He took a strand of her hair in his hand and stroked it. "You always try, and I love that about you."
She let out a series of whines at that, but doesn't protest the compliment either. She nestled against his chest, keeping her face turned away enough to still talk to him without her voice being muffled.
"I just... want to know more about you, Luka," she told him. "You're so sweet and I felt awful having to ditch you. Didn't it bother you?"
He gave a one-armed shrug. "You were busy. I unders—"
"Luka."
He stopped, meeting her firm gaze and knowing that he wasn't getting out of this easily. He sighed, admitting, "...Yeah, it bothered me, but it wasn't because of you or that I didn't trust you. I... see—my dad..." He rubbed the back of his neck, realizing that he'd never told anyone this story before. "I never knew who he was. I asked my mom so many times, but she never gave me an answer. Whenever you had to leave and lie to me, I..."
"Oh." She raised herself up more to meet him closer to eye level. "I'm so sorry—wait—sorry, you told me not to apologize—Sorry! I did it agai—ACK!"
He laughed, feeling warm and delighted by how much she cared about him and wanted him to feel secure in their relationship. He squeezed her shoulder in reassurance, wanting to nuzzle her for how cute she was being and just barely able to hold himself back.
"Don't worry about it. I'm glad you were looking out for me, but you deserve someone to look out for you too."
She pouted a bit at the heartfelt comment, then smiled and raised her hand to settle on his along her shoulder.
He hummed, pausing purposefully for effect before asking, "...So, what does the great guardian Marinette want to do now?"
"Oh my gosh, Luka."
He grinned, happy to compliment her until she was completely red. "How about the brave and heroic Ladybug then?"
"Luka."
He reached up to caress her cheek with his thumb. "But, if you ask me, I like the kind, sincere civilian Marinette best."
"LUKA!"
—————
The rest of their "date" passed by smoothly, Marinette's parents having left them alone so as to not interrupt anything. Marinette had idly brought up the idea that the movie might still be playing - just at a different time than they planned on going - but Luka brushed off the idea and insisted that he was happy there and didn't need to go on a "real" date with her to have fun, opting to leave it up to her.
And... yeah, neither of them were willing to leave their current position and exchange it for having to sit in different seats at a theater with other people around. They opted to just stare at the ceiling and talk, the kwami having respectfully retreated to Marinette's bed to give them privacy.
Talks of their past meetings and when she left to become Ladybug soon turned into a game of finishing Jagged Stone lyrics. Luka, either by being the bigger fan or just having an easier time remembering them, ended up winning in the end, though he couldn't have expected Marinette to follow up by immediately leaving his lap. He'd held back a whine at the sudden lack of warmth and wondered if maybe she'd been teasing him with some sort of punishment by going away.
But then she'd returned with a tiny pink gift box, and inside was a guitar pick necklace signed by Jagged Stone himself.
"He came into the bakery the other day and I had him sign it for you," she explained. Taking it out to fully present it to him, she asked, "Do...do you like it?"
"I love it, Marinette," he replied immediately, reaching out to feel the guitar pick and properly appreciate it. "I can have this?"
She smiled in response, holding the necklace out in a gesture that made his heart skip a beat, realizing that she was offering to put it on him herself. He leaned close, feeling the light brush of her fingers against his neck as she slipped it onto him. He silently hoped that it was durable because he was absolutely never taking it off.
Marinette's hands lingered on the string even when the necklace was fully on, Luka meeting her gaze to see that she was looking at him with all the love he'd ever dreamed of her offering him. He didn't say a word and neither did she, but with a light tug on his necklace, he was pulled towards her into a kiss. It was definitely too deep for their first but also so nice that neither of them cared, and not even the Ladybug revelation could outmatch his surprise at being so readily smooched.
Luka reached for the hand grabbing his necklace, Marinette letting go of it so they could thread their fingers together. His song was going crazy as she leaned forward, clearly wanting more from him and him being wonderfully helpless to resist her. He breathed her in, his other hand finding its place on her side. Her own hand rose up so her fingers could settle against the back of his neck, and he couldn't bring himself to be embarrassed by the sound he made when she started playing with his hair.
She didn't even pull away when their kiss broke, merely pressing her forehead to his while they each caught their breath. Despite the boldness she'd just displayed, she somehow couldn't maintain eye contact and ended up looking elsewhere while all he could do was stare at her in a daze.
"S-sor—" She paused, remembering again that he told her not to apologize. "I-I mean, I'm... not sorry? I—ah—remembered you saying that music is simpler than words, so I just—I thought that maybe I shouldn't ask you with words and just... play it instead?" Luka could feel the heat radiating from her blush as she hurriedly added, "Um... is that okay?"
He answered her with another kiss.

CHILDE:
Tumblr media
Childe has a very strong immunity system. No lame flu could ever get him. Mayhaps it's the below 0-degree temperature in Snezhnaya that helped his body grow accustomed to certain climates and temperatures? Because according to him, he "takes colds and kicks ass." However, after having too much fun and getting too competitive with Scaramouche at the Dragonspine Ski Resort, he's struck down with a terrible fever. From Sneznaya's Greatest Love Machine to sick babie in (y/n)'s care. He's not necessarily the whiny type but Childe is very helpless. Whether it was intentional or not, he couldn’t help himself at all. He forgets about the cough drops he has to drink and you have to remind him about it, when he refuses to eat Goulash fresh from Dragonspine and demands for alphabet soup, or when you're doing work in the living room and he comes up to you wrapped in a burrito blanket, asking for cuddles because "hugs are the best medicine." to which, you would reply with a hard "no." because you couldn't risk the both of you getting sick. (Even though you were craving hugs from him too.) Due to your boyfriend's stubbornness, it took a week before he could fully recover. And when he did, you bet he rushes to you, screaming, "I'm cured!" peppering you with kisses on your cheek and enveloping you in hugs that you've longed so much from him.
Tumblr media
DILUC:
Tumblr media
Colds are Diluc's worst enemy. Whenever he got remotely sick when he was a kid, whether it be a runny nose or a small allergy, his immune system literally betrays him. So, when he gets sick, he literally gets sick. Since then, He vowed to maintain a healthy body. You've never even seen him get a headache! It's always been Diluc taking care of you whenever you’re down with a cold. You had always wished for a moment where the tables would turn and it would be you taking care of him for once. That would soon happen on a particularly normal day. Diluc approaches you and asks if you could check his temperature. You bring out a thermometer to check if he has a fever, and it read 38 degrees. Diluc suddenly panics. His face red as a tomato and feeling woozy and lightheaded, your boyfriend wraps his arm around you for support as you bring him to your bedroom. Then, he suddenly sneezes. An adorable sniffle you did not expect to hear from your boyfriend or from anyone as handsome as him at all. It was the cutest "achoo." you've ever heard. You giggle, reaching for his neatly folded pajamas in the closet and handing it to him. "Pretend you didn't hear that." He says coldly, trying to not act embarrassed. Since that night and until he became well, you barely left Diluc’s side. He's wrapped in a blanket, his usual well-dressed get up is replaced with a dark gray hoodie and joggers, your stuffed plushies are cuddled up beside Diluc to keep him company whilst he's bed-ridden, and you're bringing him healthy and delicious meals to help him get better soon. When he had finally recovered, Diluc thought that maybe getting sick wasn't all that bad. Especially if the the one most dearest to him could love and care for him so well while he’s at his weakest.

KAEYA:
Tumblr media
Kaeya tries to hide his cold at first. He doesn't want to make you worry too much. After all, he's not the type to get so sick easily anyway. T'was the cursed downpour of rain on that particular Wednesday night after his evening classes to blame for all of this. When you're around him, he clears his throat every time he has the urge to cough, He tries to sneeze as quietly as possible so you wouldn't hear, and he takes his daily medicine for colds behind your back. It wasn't til you accidentally hear his loud coughs whilst he was on his phone when you realized that he had a cold for the past few days now. You were a bit sad at first because Kaeya shouldn't have hid this from you, and yet, you quickly understood when he told you why. Since then, you've been taking care of him. He would lie on your lap as you apply a fever patch on his forehead, massaging his temples, as he coos adoringly at your gestures of affection. In fact, he loved the special treatment that he was getting from you  so much, that even if he was getting better, he still asked if you could rub his temples to ease the pain he's been feeling from his common colds. Although it is very clear that he's already free of his illness, you chose to play along with him. and so from then on, giving Kaeya a loving massage became a part of your daily routine, and he was loving every minute of it.

ZHONGLI:
Tumblr media
As a herb and tea enthusiast, Zhongli is able to keep a healthy mind and body. Chamomile tea before the two of you go to bed and a scented humidifier wafting around your house to rid of the germs. However, after eating something he had ordered for the both of you on Postmates and not knowing there was seafood in it, his mild allergies suddenly strike him with a severe cold. Zhongli hates this feeling. He hates not being able to get up, water the plants, read his books, or stroll around the city with you. He had no physical energy to do anything. He kept your house as clean and as influenza-free as possible. Yet here was, on your shared bed, speaking in a nasally but cute voice, a glass of orange juice on the bedside table, and tuned in to the Discovery Channel because it was the closest he could get to the wonderful world around him whilst he was sick. "I miss hearing your soothing voice." You say jokingly, drying a hot towel so you can pat and place it on Zhongli's forehead. "I'm afraid I can't do anything right now, my love. I'm sorry. A-Actually... my body feels hot. I think I need to take a  shower." Wearing a bathrobe or else he'd shiver and have his condition worsen, you help your boyfriend take a hot bath by washing his hair and help dry it right after. Zhongli wasn't the type of boyfriend to ask for these kinds of things, but it was such a sweet gesture. You gingerly wash his hair, spread shampoo around his auburn streaks and small upward curls, and massaging his head in the process. He hums in delight whilst you giggle at his utters of praise, leaving him once you're done with your deed. After a relaxing bath that had probably defeated the colds that was plaguing him, Zhongli is back on his feet the next day. Unfortunately, you were the next victim of this stupid flu and now, it was Zhongli's turn to take care of you and making sure you would get the love and treatment that you had given him.

XIAO:
Tumblr media
Calling your boyfriend stubborn when he's sick is quite an understatement. As a very productive person, Xiao always sets a certain amount of things to do as his goal for the day. Going to the skate park, hanging out with you, playing sports, or playing video games were just many of the activities he would do in a span of a day. But, when he catches a cold after staying up too late (sleep is for the weak! According to the Vigilant Yaksha as the mad lad had stayed up till 7 AM) after getting too invested in playing Resident Evil Village, he comes down with a flu that same afternoon. And so, his usual routine of going to the skate park, hanging out with you, and playing video games were soon to be replaced with lounging in the bed, taking medicine, being reprimanded by (Y/N) for moving too much, and feeling like shit because he can't do anything at all. You will literally shoot daggers when you see your boyfriend dashing around because he's supposed to be in bed, getting all the rest he can get. You were very strict with him, simply because you had to. Xiao was very careless after all. You were cooking dinner that same night when Xiao comes up to you, resting his chin on your shoulder, wrapping his arms around your waist and whispering, "I can go to school with you tomorrow." "Xiao... no you won't. Go to back to bed. I'll bring you the Veggie Radish Soup there." You reply harshly, paying no attention to him at all. His tsundere tendencies were showing when you deliver the soup to him and he grumbles, "Y-you don't have to take care of me like this. It was my fault as to why I got sick in the first place. I can take care of myself, you know." You raise an eyebrow, giving him a knowing yet loving look. "I know that. But, I'm doing this because I love you. You're my freaking boyfriend for petesake! Why would I not care for you like this!?"

"I don't understand how these stupid people party here when we've got exams in two weeks," your bestfriend, Doyeon, muttered under her breath while scribbling down some notes. You both were at a café in your university, studying for the upcoming exams.
You chuckled, glancing up at her from your notebook. "Your boyfriend is one of those stupid people who are partying right now."
She rolled her eyes. "Believe me, I want to smack Yunho with this," she held up her notebook, making you snort. "I'm surprised you don't get frustrated when San is literally doing the same thing."
"Well, it's his life," you said. "I'm not his parent who can nag at him to study."
San and you have been dating for a little over eight months now; other than Doyeon and San's friends, no one else knew about your relationship. Doyeon and Yunho were also dating for a while now. You both didn't really know why the boys didn't want other people to know about your relationship, but you both just went with the flow despite witnessing girls throwing themselves at them everyday. Doyeon was really calm about the whole situation, but you actually weren't even though you never let it show; you were quite worried about San leaving you for other women who were like him. You never understood why he's dating someone like you: the type who rarely parties, rarely drinks, never smokes, decently studies and gets good grades, never gets involved in fights; the opposite of him, basically.
Doyeon was about to say something, but your conversation was interrupted by someone who suddenly sat beside you in your booth, placing a textbook on the table. "Don't mind me, ladies," one of your university's badboys, Kangmin, said. "There was no place to sit, so here I am."
Ji Kangmin was handsome, and a typical badboy from what you've heard. You didn't really know much about him personally, but you knew his friend group and your boyfriend's group were rivals and often got into fights.
"I'm surprised you're here," Doyeon stated, raising an eyebrow. "Shouldn't you be at some party?"
"I don't party when exams are near," he said with a small smile. "I know I don't have a good reputation, but unlike other people here who have the same reputation as me, I actually want to score well and decently graduate." You were stunned, not expecting to hear that from someone like him. Well, maybe all badboys aren't the same.
-
"Babe!" San whined sleepily when you pulled his blanket off his body. "God, my head fucking hurts."
"Serves you right for drinking all night," you said, running a hand through his messy black hair.
"But the party was epic," he mumbled, eyes closing at the way you played with his hair.
After a few minutes, San took some painkillers and got up to take a shower. When he finished, he immediately pulled you into a hug. "I missed you," he said, burying his face in the crook of your neck.
You chuckled. "You saw me yesterday morning."
"But that was in class," he murmured, placing soft kisses on your neck, making your heart race. "I didn't get to talk to you."
"Then maybe you should start talking to me in class," you said and immediately regretted it when you felt San tense up.
San moved a step back to look at you. "Babe, you know I can't do that," he stated. "I don't want people to know about us or start—"
"Yeah, I know," you cut him off with a small smile, hiding your disappointment. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that."
"It's fine," he said, kissing your forehead. "Let's go have breakfast, yeah?"
"Um, actually, I have to go back to my dorm," you said, making San frown and ask why. "I've got a study session with Doyeon," you lied; you just didn't feel like being here at the moment.
San sighed, cupping your cheeks. "Babe, you study so much. These exams don't matter much."
Your eyebrows furrowed. "San, these are end of the first semester exams. They're extremely important."
San didn't say anything; he only leaned down to capture your lips with his own. "Stay for a little while, please," he murmured against your lips. Before you could protest, he kissed you again, this time more passionately. He gently pushed you onto his bed, hovering above you before reconnecting your lips. Your hands wrapped around his neck, playing with the hair at his nape. One of San's hands slipped under your blouse, moving to cup your breast, giving it a squeeze. You gasped due to his actions and he took the opportunity to slide his tongue into your mouth, deepening the kiss. Your phone began ringing but both of you ignored it. You were getting wetter by the second and you could feel San's growing bulge pressing against you. When your phone rang for the fourth time, San pulled away with an annoyed sigh. You chuckled, getting up from his bed to get your phone from your bag.
"Hello?" you answered.
"Where are you?! Class is gonna start in ten minutes!" Doyeon exclaimed.
"What? What class? All our classes were canceled for today."
"Mr. Byun said he's gonna take class today. Didn't you check your email?"
"Fuck. I'll be there in five." You hung up and quickly checked your reflection in San's mirror, reapplying your lip balm and tying your hair into a ponytail. San's eyes were on you the entire time.
"Are you ditching your lovely boyfriend for a class?" San asked with a pout. "Especially when you made him get all hard?"
"Yes," you replied with a small giggle. "I'll make it up to you when I'm done, I promise." you placed a quick kiss on his lips before rushing to your dorm to collect your stuff.
-
"Can I sit here?" you heard someone ask, making you look up from your notebook. Ji Kangmin was giving you a small smirk. "Seats are full."
"Go ahead," you said, returning your attention back onto your books. Fortunately, Kangmin studied quietly, not disturbing you even once.
"Why is this so hard?" you muttered under your breath, eyebrows furrowing in irritation due to the differentiation problem you've been breaking your head for.
"Need help?" Kangmin asked.
"Are you good at calculus?"
He snorted, showing you the cover of his textbook. "I'm a math major, darling." Your eyes widened, not expecting that at all. "I thought you knew but you clearly don't," he said with a chuckle. "But I know you're a computer science major." He reached for your notebook, scanning through what you've written. "Ah, so this is where you went wrong," he murmured before explaining everything to you.
After a good three hours of studying, you got up and stretched your arms. Kangmin helped you with a few sums and told you many tricks and tips to save time and make the problems easier to solve. He walked with you to your dorm building since his was right opposite yours. You caught a few people staring at the two of you, but you brushed it off; Kangmin was popular, so obviously they would stare. You had to admit, it felt quite weird to see people staring at you. You were sure they all would react the same way if you were with San.
"I'll see you tomorrow," Kangmin grinned, running his hand through his brown hair. You nodded with a smile before entering your dorm building.
-
You spent the entire week studying with Kangmin and sometimes Doyeon joined the two of you. You were really anxious about the exams, but Kangmin managed to make you calm down a little; you were really grateful for his company.
"So Jihoon asked me out and I said yes!" Hyewon said, making you and Doyeon squeal.
"Girl! I told you this day would come!" Doyeon exclaimed, making Hyewon blush. You and Doyeon teased her for blushing, laughing at how her cheeks got even pinker.
San secretly glanced at you from across the classroom, smiling at the sight of you laughing; he thought you were absolutely beautiful.
"What's he doing here?" Jongho muttered, making San and Mingi follow his line of sight.
"Probably here to find someone to fuck," Mingi said in an unbothered tone.
San focused his attention back on you until that very person tapped your shoulder. "Why the fuck is he talking to my girl?!"
You turned to look at the person who tapped your shoulder. "Oh, hey, Kangmin! What are you doing here?" you asked.
He pulled a notebook from his bag, handing it over to you. "I accidentally took your notebook yesterday, so I came to return it," he said. "Sorry about that."
"Oh no, it's okay, don't worry about it," you smiled. He was about to say something, but your professor arrived, so he had to leave and go to his own class.
After the lecture ended, you had lunch with Doyeon, Hyewon, and Jihoon at your dorm's dining hall. You couldn't help but gush about how great Hyewon and Jihoon's chemistry was; they were the cutest couple you have ever seen.
Your phone rang and you picked it up as it was San. "Hello?"
"Where are you?" San asked, sounding a little annoyed.
"At my dorm's dining hall," you replied. "Why?"
"Come to your room right now," he said and hung up before you could say anything. You quickly had the last few bites of your food before excusing yourself, telling your friends you had some work to do.
You made your way over to your room, spotting San right outside your door, wearing a blue hoodie with the hood up and a black mask. You unlocked your door with your key-card, feeling a little anxious due the serious look in your boyfriend's eyes. He closed the door before moving to sit on your bed.
"Sannie, what's wrong?" you asked, moving to stand in front of him. He stared up at you, staying silent for a while before he took off his mask, tossing it on your desk.
"Why did Ji Kangmin talk to you today?"
"He accidentally took my notebook yesterday so he came to return it," you answered honestly.
San raised an eyebrow. "Yesterday? Why were you with him yesterday?" he asked in a stern tone.
"We were studying. He was helping me with calculus."
San scoffed, getting off your bed. "I'm sure that's not what his true intentions are. Stay away from him." San's words annoyed you.
"And how do you know what his true intentions are?" you asked. "We were literally just studying, that's all."
"I don't fucking like him, Y/N. He isn't a good person and I don't want him anywhere near you. So please just stay away from him."
You sighed, glancing at the tiny cat tattoo on San's finger. "Fine..."
San gently cupped your cheek, making you look at him. He didn't like how disappointed you looked and he couldn't help but think about Kangmin stealing you away from him. "Baby... please trust me, he's just trying to get into your pants." You wanted to tell him that all those girls who flirt with him wanted the same, but you knew he already knew that and he liked the attention he got.
"Okay..." You moved away from him, picking up your textbook from your desk and placing it on your bed. "Do you wanna study with me?" you asked San.
"Nah, I'm not in the mood to study."
"You never are," you snorted, earning a wink from him.
"You study, I'll just take a nap here beside you," he said, placing a kiss on your forehead, lying down on your bed.
"Don't try anything, San," you warned him, lying down beside him. He chuckled, placing an arm around your waist, pulling you closer to his body.
San fell asleep while you studied. When you took a small break, you couldn't help but admire your sleeping boyfriend; he looked so angelic... ethereal, even. You placed a light kiss on his cheek before slowly getting off the bed to go to the bathroom.
When you came back, San was awake. "How long did I sleep?" he asked in a raspy voice.
"Almost two hours," you said, returning to your bed.
"Oh... oh crap! I should get ready. I've got a party to go to tonight," he said, stretching his arms. "Do you wanna come?"
You raised an eyebrow. "You already know my answer to that."
He chuckled, kissing your head. "Have fun studying, babe."
---
"Finally!" Doyeon yelled in happiness. "We're finally done after two weeks of torture!"
"Thank god we have an entire week off," you said, gently massaging your aching wrist.
"These exams were way harder than I expected," Hyewon said and you agreed. "You both are coming for Kang Hyunsuk's party tonight, right?"
"Of course! It's in a huge mansion, you know? Besides, I need to get drunk and laid in luxury," Doyeon said, making you and Hyewon laugh.
You quickly got ready at Doyeon's dorm in the evening before taking a cab to Kang Hyunsuk's mansion that was fortunately not too far away.
The mansion was decorated with LED lights inside and out. The large hall was converted into a dance floor and he even hired a DJ. You were sure more than half of the students at your college was here, and there were certainly a lot of people from the neighboring colleges as well.
Doyeon grabbed your hand, pulling you to the large kitchen where the drinks and snacks were. You both took two shots of vodka each before you greeted some of your classmates. Doyeon was already really tipsy due to her poor alcohol tolerance. On the other hand, you took another shot and you were still quite sober.
"Wow, Y/N, you look so hot!" Hyewon said, approaching you with Jihoon.
You were wearing a lacy dusty-rose bralette with black ripped jeans and combat boots. The bralette showed off more cleavage than you'd usually show, but you were feeling a little extra today.
You noticed Yunho approaching the kitchen with Seonghwa and Hongjoong, his eyes scanning Doyeon from head to toe. You nudged Doyeon with your elbow, gesturing to Yunho with your eyes. She glanced around, eyes landing on Yunho who gave her a smirk. She smiled at him before moving towards him. She whispered something in his ears, making him drag her away immediately. You weren't expecting your bestfriend to ditch you this early, but oh well.
"Hey Y/N," Seonghwa greeted you. "Have you seen San or Jongho?"
"Nope, I came to the kitchen as soon as I got here," you replied, pouring yourself another shot.
"Ah, all right." Seonghwa and Hongjoong took a drink before they disappeared into the crowd.
One of your friends dragged you outside to the area beside the swimming pool; she wanted to introduce you to some people from another university. You spotted San, Jongho, Wooyoung, Mingi, and Yeosang on the other of the pool, surrounded by girls as usual. There were a few guys there and they were all playing a game of spin the bottle. There was a girl sitting on your boyfriend's lap, and that annoyed you a lot. You couldn't do anything about it since San didn't want anyone to know about your relationship. When you got to see the girl's face, your eyes widened; it was your ex-bestfriend, Park Hyejoo. You scoffed in disbelief; San knew who she was and what she did to you in high school, yet he let her sit on his lap. You tried not to pay attention to them by focusing on the conversation your friend was having with the people she had introduced you to. It somewhat worked... until you heard cheers and whistles which caught everyone's attention.
Hyejoo's face was buried in San's neck, no doubt giving him a hickey. He wasn't even pushing her away. You felt your eyes tear up, but you blinked it away. You couldn't look away until she pulled away. And then she kissed him, causing you to gasp.
"Why are you so surprised?" your drunk friend asked you. "She fucks around as much as Choi San does. I even heard they're fuck buddies."
San pulled away from Hyejoo, but he only smirked at her, making no effort to push her off his lap. Yeosang—who was sitting beside San—noticed you watching, and he immediately elbowed San. "You fucked up big time, bro," Yeosang murmured in his ear.
"What do you mean?" San asked.
"Y/N's over there. She saw everything."
San glanced around until his eyes found your disappointed and sad ones. He wasn't even expecting you to attend the party. He scanned you from head to toe, eyes darkening due to the way you looked in that outfit.
"You dumb fuck," Yeosang muttered, low enough for only San to hear. "Are you seriously eye-fucking her right now? Put your damn reputation aside and go talk to her before you fuck shit up more, idiot!"
San excused himself, pushing your ex-bestfriend off his lap, making his way over to you. But of course, he couldn't be seen with you, so he just gestured with his head for you to follow him. Even though you were so upset, you followed him a few seconds later. He stopped at the garden where there was no one; you could still hear the blasting music from here.
San was dressed in all black and he looked absolutely irresistible. You would've asked him to fuck you right here against the wall, but you were damn pissed at the moment.
"Damn, babe," he said, lips pulling into a smirk. "My girl's looking so hot." He reached out to pull you into his arms, but you took a step back. San frowned. "Babe..."
"You knew what Hyejoo did to me," you said with a bitter chuckle. "And you let her sit on your lap." You pointed at the hickey on his neck. "You let her do that to you despite the fact that you have a girlfriend, who is in fact, standing right in front of you!" You would never lash out like this if it wasn't for the alcohol in your system. Hyejoo bullied you a lot in high school to the point where you had to change schools. San knew every little detail of what Hyejoo did, and you remembered how angry he was when you told him about it.
"Babe, calm down, please," San said softly.
"Calm down? You want me to calm down?! That fucking bitch was sitting on your fucking lap the entire time and she gave you a damn hickey! You didn't even stop her!"
"It was just a dare and—"
You scoffed. "And what about the kiss?"
"She kissed me. I didn't kiss back, I swear!"
"And you made no effort to push her off your damn lap even after that, right?"
San sighed; he really didn't want to fight with you right now. "I think you're overreacting, Y/N. Like I said, it was only a dare."
"Yeah, how about I go sit on another man's lap and suck his neck, hmm? I fucking bet you would love that," you chuckled bitterly. San clenched his jaw at your words; if that were to ever happen, he wouldn't hesitate to punch that guy.
"That's not going to happen," he placed his hands on your bare waist, pulling you against his body. "Let's not fight, okay?" he murmured, kissing your head.
You moved away from him, eyeing the hickey on his neck with disgust. "Fuck off, San," you mumbled. "I need a damn drink." Before San could could say anything, you made your way to the table of drinks beside the pool. You quickly downed three shots, eyes closing at the way the liquid burned your throat.
"Woah, woah, slow down there. You'll choke," you heard someone say from behind you.
"Who gives a fuck?" you muttered.
"Well, I certainly do, darling," Kangmin said, moving to stand in front of you. "You look really nice, even though you look like you could murder someone right now."
You glanced at San who returned back to where he was sitting before. Hyejoo started clinging to him, and he made no effort to do anything about it again. You rolled your eyes, not even surprised that your words went into San's ears and left just as fast. "Believe me, I want to," you said, feeling the alcohol starting to hit you harder.
"I don't know who pissed you off, but loosen up, yeah?" Kangmin said, pouring himself a drink. You noticed the tattoos all over his arms, one of them catching your eye. You grabbed his arm, trying to get a better look. "It's a... squirting dick?" you tried to control yourself from laughing.
"My friend's a tattoo artist and he tattooed it on me without telling me," he said with a chuckle.
"I want one too," you whined. "I want one now."
"What? A squirting dick?"
You lightly punched his bicep, swaying a little due to the effect of the alcohol in your system. "No, a good tattoo!"
"You're drunk right now, darling," he chuckled. "It's never a good idea to get a tattoo when you're drunk, trust me."
You pouted. "But I want a tattoo."
He placed his cup on the table and moved his hands to cup your cheeks. "I promise I'll take you to get a tattoo this week, okay? Now, let's go dance, hmm?" You nodded, letting him drag you inside to the dance floor.
San saw everything and his hands clenched into fists. He was so tempted to punch Kangmin and yell at him to stay away from you, but he couldn't risk his reputation like that; he didn't want anyone to know about your relationship no matter what. San went to where you were standing before, taking a tequila shot while he wondered what to do.
"Ji Kangmin and Y/N? Damn!" San overheard someone say.
"I didn't expect him to make a move on her," the other person said. "She's a goody two shoes and he's far from that."
"Kangmin likes women like that actually," the first person said. "And Y/N is very pretty. I'm not very surprised that he went for her."
"Hmm. They do look great together. He seems to like her a lot, no? I saw him walk her to her dorm last week." San's jaw clenched and he quickly made his way inside, searching for you. The dance floor was so crowded, he couldn't even get a glimpse of you anywhere. He tried calling you, but you didn't pick up. He tried calling Doyeon, but she didn't pick up as well.
"Fucking hell," he muttered under his breath, moving through tons of drunk, sweaty people, trying to find you.
After nearly fifteen minutes, he found you sitting alone on of the sofas, head resting on the armrest. "Y/N!"
"Kangmin...?" you lifted your head. "Oh, it's you."
"We're leaving," San said, grabbing your hand.
"No, f-fuck you," you hiccupped. "Go fuck off to Hyejoo." San ignored your words, taking his phone out to book a cab to his apartment. He helped you stand up and pulled you along with him. You wanted to protest, but your body was aching and you really just wanted to sleep.
You fell asleep on San's shoulder in the cab. He carried you bridal style and unlocked his door with the passcode, moving to his bedroom. He gently placed you on the bed and removed your boots. You opened your eyes due to the movement, feeling quite sick. "San..." you murmured. "I think I'm gonna throw up." San quickly lifted you up and took you to the bathroom, holding your hair back while you threw up in his toilet. He gently rubbed your back until you were done.
You brushed your teeth with the toothbrush you kept at San's place, and you took a quick hot shower, sobering a little. San gave you one of his t-shirts to wear and he dried your hair for you.
As soon as your head landed on the pillow, you fell asleep.
-
When you woke up, your head was pounding terribly. You slowly opened your eyes, immediately recognizing that you were in San's apartment; you couldn't remember much of what happened last night. You moved to his bathroom to take a painkiller and finish your morning routine. After you took a shower, you wore one of his black hoodies with one of your shorts that you usually kept at his place.
You felt a pair of muscly arms wrap around you. "You look so good in my clothes," San murmured, placing a kiss on your head. You turned around in his arms, titling your head back to look at him. You were about to wrap your arms around his neck, but your eyes landed on the hickey on his neck, reminding you of the events that happened last night, making you immediately pull yourself away from his embrace.
San frowned. "Babe—"
"San," you start. "Is your reputation that important that you can't even push another girl away when she's throwing herself at you? Especially when you know just how terrible that girl is?" you asked.
San took your hands in his. "Y/N, I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have let—"
"But you still did," you argued. "Why don't you want to tell people about us, San? Is it because I'm not like you or your friends? Do you think I'm not attractive enough to be next to you?" He didn't say anything. "I feel like you're just using me," you continued, remembering the amount of times you've heard people say San only screws around. "Do you even love me?" The last question made San freeze. You had fallen in love with San months ago, but he didn't know and probably wouldn't have even noticed.
You waited for him to say something, but he only kept quiet, eyes fixated to the floor. "San, I think we should just," you gulped, eyes tearing up again. "We should b-break up. I really can't tolerate this anymore..." Your words felt like knifes were constantly slicing his heart. "Don't you have anything to say?" you asked, hoping he would fight for you or convince you that continuing this relationship is worth it. You wished he would change.
"How can I when you've already made up your mind?" San murmured, avoiding your eyes. "If you think breaking up is what's best then okay..." he wanted to say much more. He wanted to beg you to not leave him. He wanted to tell you just how much he loved you. But he couldn't. Even if he tried, he just couldn't.
"I'll collect my stuff from here tomorrow," you mumbled, putting your boots on. San could only nod as he watched you.
Before you could leave, San stopped you. "I... I just wanted to ask you... if you ever," he took a deep breath. "If you ever loved me."
You smiled sadly. "It doesn't matter," you whispered, but it was loud enough for him to hear you. "Take care, San," you mumbled before walking out the door, shattering his heart.
-
"You fucked up even more," Yeosang said, watching San smoke a cigarette.
"That's very helpful. Makes me feel great," San stated sarcastically, blowing the smoke to the air.
"No offense, Sannie, but I agree with Yeosang," Hongjoong said. "You should've told her how you felt instead of keeping quiet."
"I know," San sighed. "But she already made up her mind."
"Dude, you're really dense," Wooyoung stated. "She asked you if you had something to say. That translates to 'fight for me.' I don't think you've noticed, but Y/N is definitely in love with you."
San's head shot up. "She wouldn't have broken up with me if she really loved me, Woo."
Seonghwa groaned in frustration. "If I was in Y/N's place, I would dump your stupid ass too."
"Agreed," Yeosang said. "I told you before, San, your reputation is going to fuck up everything. You need to let go of your past as well before it's too late."
"Ji Kangmin's got his eyes on her," Mingi stated. "I heard his friends talking about it."
"Yeah, I heard that too. Y/N is close to him," Jongho added.
San rolled his eyes, taking a drag from the cigarette. "He has nothing else to do other than stealing the girls I like."
"Exactly, and you're letting him do it again," Yunho said, taking the cigarette away from San and crushing it with his shoes. "You have to make a decision Sannie. Either you sort things out with Y/N, or you lose the woman you love to that very bastard again."
---
"So you had the hots for Y/N, huh?" Kangmin asked San while he waited in line to order his drink.
"That's none of your business," San said in a cold tone to his ex-bestfriend.
"I saw you talking to her privately that day," he said, referring to the party you attended almost two weeks ago. San ignored his words. "I don't know what was going on between the two of you," Kangmin continued. "But whatever it was, I'm glad it didn't last long. I want to make her mine."
San scoffed. "You just want to get into her pants."
Kangmin snorted. "Obviously. But after spending two weeks with her, without you around, I'm quite interested. Y/N is gorgeous and has a great personality. She's a rare gem, you know? I bet she'd be just as wonderful in bed and tastes as sweet as she loo—"
San took a step towards Kangmin, grabbing the collar of his shirt. "If you don't shut the fuck up, I'll break your damn face!" San warned.
"Ohhh, I'm so scared," he teased, pushing San away. "Fuck off, Choi San. Someone like Y/N doesn't deserve a bastard like you. You weren't and will never be good enough for her." San chose to ignore him, not wanting to cause a big scene at the café. Kangmin's words stabbed him in the heart. San always thought he wasn't good enough for you, but he never expected to hear anyone say it out loud.
Kangmin's phone started ringing and he couldn't help the smirk that formed on his face. "Hey, gorgeous," he answered, loud and clear. "I'm at the café near your building, getting you your favorite drink and some cupcakes. I'll pick you up from class."
"That won't be necessary," you replied, pushing the door of the café to enter. You instantly spotted Kangmin and made your way towards him, unaware of San who was standing right behind him. "Hi!" you said to Kangmin who hung up once he saw you.
"Hey, beautiful! How was class?" he asked, secretly glancing at San; you still hadn't noticed San as your back was facing him.
"Ugh, tiring. I hate extra classes. I couldn't understand any—" your phone started ringing, interrupting your sentence. You answered the call as it was from your bestfriend.
"Where are you?" Doyeon asked.
"At the café near our dorm," you replied.
"Come over fast, we have to get ready for Hyewon's party. She wants us to come early cause she needs help."
"I'll be there in a bit."
-
"I didn't expect any of them to be here," you said to Doyeon while drinking some whiskey and coke from a red cup, watching your ex-boyfriend converse with his infamous group of friends; they usually went clubbing on Saturday nights. "Aren't you gonna go over to Yunho?"
"I don't wanna ditch you," she answered. You gently pushed her in Yunho's direction.
"Go, I'll be fine."
Before she could reply, Kangmin wrapped his arms around you, startling you a little. Doyeon gave you a wink before making her way towards her boyfriend, leaving you with Kangmin.
"Can we talk?" he whispered in your ear, making sure to move closer to your body once he noticed San watching. You nodded, letting him pull you upstairs. You had gotten quite close to Kangmin these last two weeks; you were really glad to have a friend like him. He distracted you from the pain you felt from not being with San anymore.
Kangmin gently pushed against the wall, trapping you between his arms. You gasped. "What are you doing?"
"I like you, Y/N," he confessed with a smile. "I wanna date you." Before you could say anything, he kissed you. You were a little too shocked, so you let him kiss you for a few seconds. When you regained your senses, you pushed him away. He stared at you, confused by your actions.
"Kangmin, I'm sorry, but I don't feel the same way..."
Kangmin rolled his eyes. "It's cause of Choi San, isn't it?"
"No," you lied. Of course it's cause of San. You were still in love with him. You didn't want to date anyone until you got over him. "I only see us as friends, Kangmin," you stated honestly. "You're a really good friend and I don't want to lose you."
Kangmin sighed. "Okay, let's just forget about this. Let's have a drink, hmm?" You nodded, following him downstairs to the kitchen.
You were talking to one of your friends while Kangmin got a drink for you.
"Thanks," you said, taking the cup from him. You took a sip of your drink. It tasted a little salty, but you didn't mind. You felt yourself relaxing a little while you nodded your head to the music. By the time you finished your drink, you felt pretty lightheaded. You clinged to Kangmin's arm. "Hey, could you take me to the couch?" you requested, words slurred. "I don't feel very good..."
"Of course," Kangmin lifted you into his arms, bridal style. He carried you upstairs into one of the rooms, shutting the door behind him with his foot. He placed you on the bed. "You don't know how long I've waited for this," he said, licking his lips while he took your crop-top off. You didn't know what was happening and your vision was really blurry. Kangmin pushed you onto your back before hovering above you. The sudden movement made your head spin even more, causing you to pass out. "Oh, too bad she couldn't stay conscious for this..." he murmured to himself. He ran his hands up from your jean-clad legs to the soft skin of your abdomen before reaching behind your body to unclasp your bra. Before he could pull the piece of clothing away from your body, the door swung open.
"You fucking bastard!" San yelled, pushing Kangmin off of you. Jongho and Hongjoong were right behind San.
"What the fuck, dude?!" Kangmin yelled. "Get out! Can't you see we're busy?!" His words pissed Jongho off. He immediately grabbed Kangmin by the collar and punched him twice in the nose. Kangmin fell to the floor, holding his broken, bloody nose in pain. Jongho wanted to punch him one more time, but Hongjoong held him back. "Don't. You'll end up killing him."
San started crying when he saw your passed out form; he couldn't even think about what would've happened if his friends didn't overhear Kangmin's friends talking about him spiking your drink. San clasped your bra back and put your crop-top on you before he lifted you into his arms. "I'm taking her to my apartment," he said to his friends.
"I'll drive you," Hongjoong offered.
-
When you woke up, you immediately recognized your surroundings. You had absolutely no idea of how you ended up in your ex-boyfriend's bedroom.
Your head was pounding and you wondered what time it was as it was really sunny outside. Before you could get off San's bed, he entered the room.
"You're awake," he said softly, relief clear in his eyes. "Take a shower and come eat. You must be really hungry."
"What happened? What's the time right now?" you questioned, your heart racing at the mere sight of him in a lilac hoodie and black sweatpants.
"I'll tell you after you eat," he said with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "It's three in the afternoon. Doyeon got some clothes for you. There's a spare toothbrush in the bathroom."
"Thanks," you mumbled, getting up to go to the bathroom.
After you took a shower, you made your way to San's kitchen. You took a seat at the dining table, looking at all the different dishes on the table.
"You made all this?"
San shook his head. "I wasn't able to cook today. Wooyoung and Seonghwa made it. They left a few minutes ago." You noticed how tensed and sad he was; you wanted to ask him what was bothering him, but you knew he wouldn't answer your question until you ate.
You both ate in a comfortable silence. You tried to recall the events from last night, but you weren't able to. You frowned, wondering if you really drank that much.
"Are you all right, San?" you asked, settling on his couch after you both finished eating.
He took a deep breath and you noticed the slight dark circles beneath his eyes. "Can I hug y-you?" he asked, voice cracking while his eyes teared up.
You immediately scooted closer to him on the couch, wrapping your arms around him. He buried his face in the crook of your neck while he held you tightly. His body shook convulsively while he cried, his tears wetting your neck. You ran a hand through his soft hair, knowing it would help calm him down a little.
San pulled away from you, wiping his tears with the sleeve of his lilac hoodie. "I'm sorry..."
You grabbed his hand, intertwining it with yours. "What happened, Sannie?"
Hearing you call him by his nickname brought another set of fresh tears to his eyes. Your other hand reached up to wipe his tears away.
"I love you, Y/N," he confessed, more tears rolling down his cheeks. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you that before. I'm so sorry for being a jerk to you and prioritizing my reputation. I fucked up and I regret it so much." You took a deep breath, trying to control your rapid heartbeat while you listened to every word he said. "I felt like dying after what happened last night. I'm so sorry, this is all my fault," he sobbed.
Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "What happened last night?"
"O-Oh you don't remember...?" You shook your head. San cleared his throat, trying his best to not to break down again. "Wooyoung and Hongjoong overhead Ji Kangmin's friends say that he spiked your drink after you rejected him." you froze in shock. "They immediately told us about it, and me, Hongjoong, and Jongho rushed over to you. You weren't conscious when we found you. Your top was off and he was about to take your bra off as well, but I pushed him away. Then Jongho punched him. I brought you here after that."
You stared at San in disbelief. "Kangmin s-spiked my drink...?"
San nodded. "He had it all planned. I'm sorry, Y/N... none of this would've happened if he didn't see us together." You were too shocked to say anything; you couldn't believe Kangmin would go this low just cause you rejected him. "Ji Kangmin was my bestfriend in high school. After I got a girlfriend, he acted like a bitch to me cause he wanted her. I really loved her, and she cheated on me with him. He spread a lot of false shit about me after I ended our friendship. When I tried to move on with another girl, he took her away from me too. I didn't want other people to know about us only because he would find out. I didn't want him anywhere near you because I knew he would try to take you away from me. I didn't push Hyejoo away that day because he was watching me and would get suspicious of my actions if I pushed her away. I tried my best to do everything that would keep him away from you, but I still failed..."
You burst into tears, wrapping your arms around San; you had no idea he went through all this. "I'm sorry, San. I should've listened to you when you told me he wasn't a good person," you managed to say through sobs.
"No, Y/N, I'm the one who should say sorry for not telling you all of this before." He held you, gently rocking you back and forth while he cried with you. "Thank you for rejecting him..."
You pulled away, cupping his cheek. "How could I ever date someone else when I'm love with you, San?"
His heart raced in his chest due to your words. "That's why you rejected him?"
You nodded. "And I'm glad I did."
San smiled, leaning his forehead against yours. "Can I..." he hesitated "Can I kiss you?"
"Yes, please."
San immediately captured your lips with his own, kissing you oh so gently. You wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him closer. He smiled, causing you to smile as well while you kissed him; you both missed this so much. The kiss was slow and soft, the two of you just wanting to savor this moment. Your hands played with his hair while his hands lazily ran down the expanse of your back. San pulled away, holding you tight against his chest.
"I know I hurt you a lot and I don't even deserve to speak to you right now... but I want to start over, Y/N," San said honestly. "I want to treat you the way you deserve... show you off to the world... I want to make things right between us. These two weeks were pure torture without you, and I realized that I can't... I can't live without you, Y/N. I really need you, baby."
You rested your head on his chest and you could hear his fast heartbeat. "I need some time, Sannie." you noticed him tense up a little and you knew exactly what he was thinking. "And no, this isn't me indirectly rejecting you or anything. I want to be with you, San. I always have and that isn't gonna change. I just need a little time, considering everything that happened." San nodded in understanding. "I promise that I will come back to you."
"I love you and I'll wait for you," San said, placing a kiss on your head.
"Thank you... I love you too, Sannie." He giggled, loving the way you say those three heart-fluttering words. He cupped your cheek to pull you into another sweet kiss, making your heart race again.
The two of you knew that no matter what, you both would always find your way back to each other.

They are Always with Us - (Christen Press X reader)
Everyone was anxious this camp. Of course they were. The World Cup was only a few months away and roster selection was only around the corner. Which meant that every camp mattered. You needed to come and prove that you deserved a spot on that roster.
But that wasn't the only reason everyone was anxious
"Is she here yet?" Ali asks in a quiet whisper to the table which consisted of me, Ash, Pinoe, Becky, Alyssa and Alex.
Pinoe shakes her head slightly. "No. She and Tobin are arriving soon. Tobin flew out to her so she could keep her company and so they could come together".
Alex let's out a low sigh as she runs her hand through her hair. "Gosh. I wasn't sure if she would come or not. I don't know if I would be able to do it if I was in her shoes".
Ash stabs at her food as she shrugs, "I mean the World Cup is just around the corner. Every camp matters at this point".
"I know but we would all understand if she wouldn't come to this one. I mean she just lost her mom..." Alex says before trailing off at the moment end.
It was the sad reality of the situation. It's only been a month since Christen's mom passed away. We all knew how close she is with her family especially her mom. And to be honest we didn't know if she would come to this camp. It really killed us all to see the usually happy smiley and optimistic forward so sad. I remember attending the funeral with Tobin to offer support for Christen. It was crippling watching Christen leaning into her dad and sisters so devastated.
"Do we know who she's rooming with?" Ali asks again trying to move on the conversation quickly not wanting to dwell on the sad truth.
Everyone shakes their head and shrugs before I voice quietly. "I am". Everyone's head snaps to me in mild surprise. I guess they all thought she would be rooming with Tobin.
"Just make sure to give her the space she needs this camp. And maybe just keep an eye on her" Ali advises me with a small smile while I just nod. And with that the conversation swiftly moved onto talks of the World Cup.
After finishing up my food I throw away my trash before deciding to go to my room for a nap. But my eyes widen when I see one of my best friends standing there in front of me. "Tobin! Hi I didn't know you were here yet".
She gives me her signature big grinned smile as we both hug. "We only got here a short while ago. Was about to go get food. Christen said she was tired and went to take a nap in her room".
I nod as I bite my lip fiddling with my phone in my hands. "How is she?"
Tobin sighs letting out a huge huff of air as she scratches the back of her neck. "Didn't speak much to me on the flight or anything. I think she's still trying to come to terms with it. I think she just wants to busy herself now to distract herself". Tobin gets a cheeky smirk on her face, "She did say how she really wanted one of your big bear hugs though".
Of course Tobin knew about my crush on Christen. The three of us hang out all the time and caught me staring at Christen.... multiple times. That and Tobin was practically my sister of course she knew.
I can already feel my face burn as Tobin winks at me. "Shove it Tobs". She laughs a big belly laugh as she nodded her head towards the room. "Seriously though I think she would really like to see you".
I nod as I move towards my room, "Sure I'll see you later Tobs". She nods as she walks into the elevator, "See you later Lover girl".
I throw a middle finger back at her over my shoulder as I hear her cackle before the lift door's close. As I opened the door to our room I peak my head in, smiling when I see Christen was already passed out on the bed. But it's soon replaced with a frown as I see how exhausted she looked with subtle tear tracks on her face.
I move to plop down on my bed next to hers. But freeze when she starts to shuffle on the bed. She flips over onto her side so she's now facing my bed. A few loose strands falling into her face. I carefully and gently go to brush them out of her face and smile as I see her subconsciously smile before nuzzling her face into the pillow cuddling further into the blanket draped over her.
I climb back onto my bed ready to take my own nap. I stare at the ceiling for a bit. Usually if I was roomed with Christen I would be a nervous wreck. Worried I would let slip my feelings for her. But right now I can't focus on that. Right now she just needs me to be there for her. And as I drift off the last thought on my mind was that it didn't matter.
Cause Christen Press is way out of my league
---
I yawn tiredly as I stretch my arms over my head until there's a loud pop from my back. Media days sucked. They were always long and tiring.
And as much as I love Alex being paired with her both was awesome and sucked at the same time. Cause when I'm paired with her most of the questions get directed towards her with allows me to just sit quietly and answer a few questions as I wait for time to pass. But it almost meant everyone wanted to talk to her and so it always over ran and took forever.
So when I was finally released from media hell I couldn't wait to just curl up and crash for the night. Or maybe talk to Christen.
I would have been perfectly happy with either or.
Cause we haven't been able to fit in a proper conversation since she was already down in the meal room when I woke up from my nap. So apart from a small smile and a hug we haven't gotten the chance to really catch up.
As I'm digging around my sweatpants pocket for my room key I'm pulled from my task as I hear someone call me from behind. I turn to see Tobin and Mal walking towards me. "Hey guys".
Tobin grins at me, "Looks like Media has you dead on your feet". I just give her a blank 'really?' look causing the two to fall into giggles.
"Yeah well then your paired with Alex it seems like it's never ending media" I sigh. "Honestly I don't know how Alex does it. I'm pretty sure she answered the same question in about 6 different ways".
Mal scrunches her face in a small grimace. "Ouch. Media days are always kinda sucky. All we did was play Mario Kart all day".
I pout while the others once again laugh at my misfortune. "Lucky for some". My eyes flicker to my door as I swallow already feeling the heat from my cheeks. I clear my throat playing with my hands as I drop my voice slightly. "So uh have either of you seen Christen yet?"
Mal just shakes her head simply while Tobin gets a wicked grin on her face her eyes filling with mirth and glee. "No. But last I heard was that she was going to the roof".
When she winks at me I know I've been caught and rub the back of my neck shyly at Tobin let's out a big laugh while Mal looks between us confused. Swallowing back my embarrassment I shake my heat hoping the blush would die down quickly. "Uh I'm going to go check on her. Make sure she's okay".
But obviously Tobin sees through that as she winks at me. "Go get her Tiger".
I narrow my eyes at her and slap the back of her head as I walk past get towards the stairs. But wince and speed up when I hear Mal.
"Wait what?"
It takes a second before I hear Mal gasp and release a small "No!" Along with Tobin's hearty laugh. I mentally groan at the fact now Mal knows about my crush on Christen. Mentally working it out in my head how long is it going to be before the rest of the youngins as well as the entire team finds out.
Many many many stairs later and I'm finally on the roof. But now we come to the difficult part. What many people don't really know is.
I may have a 'slight' fear of heights
So when I look to see Christen leaning over what looks to me as a really rickety railing I can already feel my heart start to pound and I haven't even left the doorway.
So instead on focusing on how high we're up at the moment cause the thought alone makes me feel dizzy, I focus on Christen. How she has her arms crossed leaning on the silver metal railing. How she's wearing a pair of shorts and a loose and baggy shirt. Which upon further inspection I realize is mine. I smile thinking how many of my clothes she must had stored away somewhere.
Any time I bring it up she would always unapologetically smile at me as she wrapped her arms around herself and argue that my clothes were always warmer. But that's probably to do with the fact that I'm taller than her and my clothes are always bigger and baggy on her which makes her ten times cuter.
She had her long curly hair tied back in a ponytail keeping her hair out of her face and splayed out on her back. Except for these small strands near her face which are flying around due to the wind.
For a split second her elegance and beauty had me in such awe that I forgot about my fear
"Are you okay?"
I instantly curse myself out in my head. Of course she isn't okay. How stupid could I be. I physically wince at my stupidity but Christen just looks at me from over her shoulder and sends me a small smile before looking back out over the railing.
I gulp and pull at the neck of my jersey hoping that would help me breathe but it doesn't. Swallowing hard I take tentative steps towards Christen. Once I make it beside her I grip the railing hard with what could only be described as hanging on for life or death grip. With the railing in both hands I force myself not to look down and just breathe.
I only open my eyes when I see Christen sigh and step back still holding the railing but moving so that she now has her chin on her arms against the railing peering up at me through her eyelashes
Oh sweet Jesus
"How was media day?" Her voice is soft and light but still slightly strained.
I shrug being as brave to tap my thumbs against the railing in an attempt to distract myself. I fail. "You know. The usual. Long. I just let Alex do the talking mostly. Which is easy cause who would want to talk to me with her in the room?"
I meant it as a joke but obviously she doesn't find it funny as she frowns at me. "Your still important too Y/n/n".
I blush and make the mistake of looking out over the railing and then settle for looking at my shoes. "I...I know Chris. Just...". I sigh, "Who would want to talk to me when you have Alex Morgan in the room?"
I can see from the corner of my eye that she pouts at my statement before leaning her head against my bicep making me tense. "Well no offense to Alex but I much rather talk to you all day than Alex". She gives me a cute smile as she looks at me sideways. "Especially if it means I get more if those special bear hugs".
I bite my lip and look down but in doing so I accidentally ended up looking over the railing and down all the way to the ground. I felt like I wanted to keel over and just barf. My vision was starting to go wavey. The only thing keeping me upright was the fact that I knew Christen had other things on her mind to be putting up with my shit and the fact I was holding onto the railing so tight I was surprised there wasn't a dent in it.
There's a small silence. It was peaceful. The only noise there was the wind and the slight flapping of out clothes. And while I was trying to figure out what was best to say I guess Christen could see right through me.
"I miss her" she says softly distracting me from the urge to spill my guts over the railing. Her voice cracked slightly at the end. Accompanied by a tiny sniffle at the end. And I could see her look up and blink rapidly no doubt fighting back tears. "I miss her a lot".
I frown as I watch the person I love so much start to crack and crumble slowly. I open my mouth hoping to provide some sort of comfort but nothing comes out.
I sigh as I run my hand over my hair before I gently put my hand on hers. "I know Chris. I know". I close my eyes and take a deep breath before deciding to disclose something that not many people know about. "Have I ever told you about my family?"
I wait as I watch her think for a second before shaking her head. I dig around in my pocket for my wallet before I pull out a small picture and hand it to her. I smile as I watch her handle it so delicately. "I know everyone thinks Tobin and her family are my family, which I suppose is kinda true. Cause in College Tobin and her family practically adopted me into theirs". I point at the picture. "But that's my real family".
I can see Christen furrow her eyebrows in confusion as she looks at all the different people in the picture.
I look at the picture over her shoulder and smile fondly remembering the day it was taken. "This was taken the day I got my first call up to camp". I take a deep breath before I look away knowing what her reaction is going to be. Cause everyone has the same reaction when I tell them. "I came back from practice one day to see the entire orphanage had thrown me a party to celebrate".
And just as I expected her head pops up in surprise and her eyes widen
I can see how her mouth opens and closes several times but no words come out. I mean I understand that's usually the reaction I get from people. That and pity.
I shake my head smiling softly at her. "I didn't tell you to get sympathy or anything like that. It wasn't that bad. I mean it had it's moments and money was pretty tight most of the time but I have pretty awesome brothers and sisters". I wait a second as she continues examining the picture. "Did you know your mom knew?" I ask quietly.
Now that gets a reaction as her head snaps towards me and she stands up properly. "Really?"
I nod with a smile. "Yeah. Once I told her I wasn't related to Tobin she asked where my parents where and I told her the truth". I chuckle a bit as I rub my thumb over her knuckles. "She didn't treat me differently at all. All she did was hug me and she always invited me over for the holidays". My smile drops slightly, "I wish I had taken up at least one of those offers now. She truly was amazing".
"She never told me" she whispers quietly. She looks as if she's replaying all the conversations she had with her mom trying to think if she ever mentioned it.
I squeeze her hand. "I asked her not to tell you. I always thought she would but I guess she kept her word".
Christen looks down. "It was always important to her. Keeping her word".
I smile brushing some of those fly away hairs from her face and behind her ear. "It just made her even more incredible than she already was".
Christen looks down as she clasps her hands on a long beaded necklace. It takes me a second before I recognize it to be her mother's. "I really miss her".
And it seems that was what breaks the dam as her voice breaks and tears start to leak from her eyes. She starts to curl in on herself before she burrows into me. I hug her with one arm the other still holding tightly to the railing. But as I feel her tears start to wet my shirt I chide myself and ignore my fear and throw my arms around her holding her securely into my chest. I whisper small coos and reassurances in her ear as her sobs eventually start to die down.
As she stops crying she nuzzles her face into my chest making me let out a content smile. "Sorry".
I rub my hand in small circles on her back as I squeeze her tighter into me. "It's okay. Nothing to be sorry for". She looks up at me gives me a teary smile before her hands stop on my chest and she scrunches her face. "Y/n/n? Your heart is pounding. Like it's about to jump out of your chest?"
At that reminder my right hand goes back to clutching the railing while the other rubs the back of my neck sheepishly almost like a child caught with their hand in the cookie jar. "Well" I stutter. "I might...kinda...have a fear of heights and we're really high right now and-"
Christen's eyes widen before she chuckles and takes my hand pulling me away from the railing and back to the center of the roof well away from the edge. I can already feel my vision getting better. "Why didn't you say so? You would have comforted me just as well from here".
With red cheeks, I shrug shyly scuffing my shoe against the ground only looking up when Christen giggles.
"Well that was really sweet of you Y/n" she smiles before she bites her lip. "Honestly I thought it was maybe... because of me". She scoffs quietly. "Stupid right?"
I blink at her owlishly trying to register her words before they finally click. Did she just....?
"What? No! I-I mean I..." I stop stumbling over my words and take a deep breath as I see her smile clearly amused at me. "I mean yes my heart was beating fast because of how high we are up. But I do like you and if we weren't this high up and there was a threat of me getting throwing my guts up right now you would definitely have my heart racing. I just always thought you were way out of my league. I mean your....you".
She bites her lip as she smiles and shakes her head at me as if I'm telling some bad corny joke. I gulp hard as she steps closer to me as I stay frozen in my place. "You never give yourself enough credit Y/n. I never understand how you can't see how amazing you are. I mean you came all the way up here, even though your terrified of heights, just to check on me". I see her eyes flicker down to my lips, "I think that's amazingly selfless of you".
And before my mind can catch up she leans in and kisses me softly at first as her hands lean up again my shoulders. As my mind slowly starts to comprehend what's happening my hands slowly move to her waist as I kiss back.
She pulls back only to come back for another kiss moving even closer so there's practically no space between us. Her hands move down and untuck my jersey from my joggers. I gasp as the kiss starts to get more intense and I have to hold myself back from letting a moan slip through my lips. Everything is better than I could have ever imagined. But while every part of me screams to let this continue. I know I can't keep letting this happen.
I pull back breathing heavy and I can see Christen inch in for another but using my grip on her hips I hold her back. Her eyes furrow and scrunch in confusion and concern as she searches my face for any tells.
I sigh screwing my eyes closed for a second trying to prepare myself. Not wanting to fall for those green eyes before I open my eyes. "Chris I would love nothing more for us to continue this. Like you don't know how much this pains me". I look into her eyes sincerely, "But I know your not in the right place right now. Your still getting over your mom and probably stressed about the World Cup and everything".
I can see her features ease at that but she's still slightly hesitant. "I promise you I would love nothing more to keep doing this. I just want to give you a little time to make sure this is something you want and not because your sad and want something to distract you. I don't want to take advantage of you like that".
With that Christen nods and smiles while on sigh glad I was able to convince her of my intentions. "Your too good Y/n".
I just smile down at her as I take my hand. "I just want what's best for you Chris....even if you decide that isn't me".
I move her hand to my chest directly over my heart. "But just so you know that I was being serious". I let her feel how fast my heart was beating. Even faster than when I was over at the ledge. "See? No where near the edge and you will have my heart racing. All systems were ready to go. And when I get back to our room I'll definitely need a cold shower".
I smile brightly as Christen bursts out in giggles trying to hide them behind her hand. "Gosh you make me laugh even when I think it's not possible anymore".
"I will make a fool out of myself everyday if it means I get to hear you laugh" I tell her honestly giving her hand a small squeeze. She smiles and gives me one small chaste kiss.
I smile into the kiss before we break apart and lean my forehead against hers. "Just remember. The ones who love us never really leave us". I point to her heart, "They'll always be in here".
She opens her mouth and scrunches her nose at me trying and failing to hide a smile blooming on her face. "Did you just...."
But before she could finish I nod. "Quote Harry Potter? Yes. Yes I did".
She giggles at me and gives me one last peck before pulling me by the hand back to our room.
"C'mon you dork I want some special bear hugs when we get back to our room".

Bnha Characters reacting to when you quit your job
bakugou
your steps were quiet as you tried to work up the energy to unlock your front door. Your hands sweating and cold when you finally got the energy to put the key in the lock a deep exhale leaving your lips when you finally walked in.
Your Body only carrying you to your kitchen counter before you dropped your keys and bag on the same counter your body now rested against.
The room heating up and shifting from the ice quiet atmosphere youd created when you felt strong arms wrap around your waist and pull you back to meet a hard chest
Small kisses being planted on the side of your neck as you let out another sigh of relief as you spoke trying not to drown in the comfort being given to you “ baby “
Your body shook as you heard a deep grunt of acknowledgment “ we — we need to talk “
you felt as another set of kisses were placed to your neck before his head snuggled into the spot between your neck and shoulder “ I— I think I made a mistake“
You bit at your lip as you kept going “ I— I was trying my best to stick up for myself y’know like you told me”
“ mm—and did you“
“ I did —I mean I did stick up for myself and I had to I needed to bu—”
“ slowly losing interest y/n “
you let out a shallow cough “ but I think I did it at the wrong time “
his body stood up a bit straighter head still remaining in the same place somehow “ baby I —i lost my job “
You felt as your boyfriends body went hard almost as if he was trying not to slam your own body into the floor in anger his grip around your waist only getting tighter “ like I said I — I wrong time“
“ wrong time? — y/n wrong place “ he screamed as he jolted your soul out of your already shaken figure. His head flying back to look at you conveying all the anger and annoyance he held, “ what the fuck do we do now “
you let out a small laugh to try to ease the tension “ we — we rely on your hero check ? “
You watched as he sucked his teeth and moved out of the kitchen “ I can barely feed a fucking roach with my salary y/n “ his voice getting louder as he walked into the living room you following closely behind “ i — i can barely feed you — us — y/n this is why we don’t have little crumb snatchers running around now “
his voice deep and heavy “ cause we’re broke do you get that babe ? huh no — fuck — you— fuck fuck fuck you gotta go back — you can’t just be chilling around the fucking house while i’m working my ass off that’s not how starting a family works y/n “
“ baby it’s just until I can get a new job “
“ tch— and how long will that take y/n “
“ well I— “
“ huh months ? “
“ well n— “
“ couple weeks “
“ I mean hopefull— “
“ babe you don’t even fucking know “ he sighed as he griped the skin on the bridge of his nose “ so fucking stupid — so so so fucking stupid “
the room went quiet as your eyes dropped to the ground. “ wel— no — I — I don’t know kats” you shook your head “ I— I really don’t“
“ and that’s the problem y/n “ he screamed eyes finally opening to look at you.
God, he loved you but seriously you just didn’t think sometimes
It’s not that he was calling you stupid it’s just that he really really loved you
He loved that you listened to him. That whenever he gave advice you heard it and went with it.
The night he told you to speak up he was honestly just fucking with you. He always forgets that he has someone who loves him now meaning he’s taken seriously. He always forgets he’s not in high school anymore.
He can’t say something crazy and asshole—ish and expect to just be ignored. He has someone that loves him and will truly listen.
Your not the stupid one
nor the one in the wrong he is
and he knows he is because he heard everything you said about your situation. Yet, he knew you were different from him whereas he had been speaking his mind for years regardless of ranks.
You couldn’t.
You had a job where everything relied on ranks and status. You couldn’t just say whatever the fuck you wanted to like he could and yet he convinced you that night to speak up whenever your boss gave you extra work you didn’t wanna do.
His eyes felt heavy and so did his body his brain automatically beating himself up as he stared at you imagining the rough day youd had. If he was pissed off with the current situation he could only imagine how you felt.
Someone who hated to rely on others yet, now having to rely on their boyfriend.
“ come here “ your eyes lit up at the statement as your tired body wobbled over and into bakugous arms. Head hitting his chest as he crushed you “ I love you and i’m proud of you “
your heart sank.
“ fuck those idiots you only have room for one anyways and hes— fuck trust me I know i’m enough “
Shoto
“ so “
“ so “
You sat on the couch legs splayed out in front of you and hands playing with the tassels of the pillows placed next to you.
God you loved these pillows. You actually remember the day you bought them.
Y’know back when you had money
“ y/n “ you watched as shoto shifted uncomfortably on the couch next to you “ my love what are you doing home “
He shook his head confused at the body placed comfortably next to his own “ your not supposed to be home for “ he looked down at his watch moving his suit jacket up his arm to create space and to make sure he was seeing the time correctly “ for 7 more hours “
you let out a short laugh “ you sound like you just got caught cheating sho “
his eyebrows crinkled together as he stared at you in disgust “ y/n I would never “
His hand moved to be placed on your thigh “my love is that what you think ? — if that’s why your here then I can assure you tha—I mean honestly if so I would never be stupid enough to disrespect you in our home— you could’ve went to my office at least I mea— “
“ I lost my job shoto “
The air shifted as the hand on your thigh suddenly felt colder than before “ I— I lost my job “
you took a deep breath shaking your head “ it’s a long story on why but i’ve been leaving the house — pretending really— to go to work “
You chuckled “ god i’m sucha bad person “ your small chuckle turned into a hearty laugh as you felt your body go slack “ A fucking horrible timekeeper too if I managed to forget my husband gets off before me on weekends “
“ do not say these things about yourself “
“ it’s not like it’s a lie “ your tear filled eyes coming up to look at his. ” right “
“ I will not stand for this y/n “
“ for what — having an unemployed s/o—i mean you already have one so not much to do about that “
you scoffed “ why don’t you want a housewife ? huh“ you smiled “ I can wear the skirts for you y’know with the aprons cook you dinner and maybe we can have kids y’know we can even get —“
“ enough “
your body shook your eyes widened facing the 6 ft male now towering over you “ your always joking about serious things and I — I don’t understand “ his eyebrows creasing in desperate need to understand you. Eyes darting around your face “ how “
his voice going deeper as he got angrier “ y/n you lost your job“ his eyes grew wide “ do you realize how serious this is “
“ wh— “ you shook your head letting out a short scoff “ of course I do —I mean sho i’m the one who qui—lost it “
“ no you clearly don’t “ he scoffed “ not if your sitting here making jokes in my face “
His mouth quirked up in disgust “ it’s almost insulting — disgusting really “
“ wh— sho—“ you felt as a tear fell from your eye “ baby what could be so disgusting huh ? so ‘ insulting ‘ about me choosing to leave huh “
his eyes softened “ because of your reason to leave “
“ my reason ? “
“ my love I know you — I know you didn’t get fired and I know you wouldn’t just leave you loved it there “
your head dropped as your fiddled with your fingers “ so that means something led you to make that life changing decision and it hurts me that you were forced to make it “
Your heart broke, he was right he was always right, for days at work youd been dealing with an overbearing co worker who would tell you to do everything they didn’t feel like doing and when you finally decided to say no to them
They went and told your boss. Who even though you’d been working there longer than your so called coworker still believed everything they were told.
That was the day that you sadly found out your job favored years over hard work.
Due to the other person being there longer you were trumped in telling your story. It was seen as not necessary because , someone who was there for so long would have no reason to lie on someone like you.
A newbie
“ someone made you quit this job “
“ sho no they— I decided “
You felt as the couch shifted from him kicking it. You thinking he was moving to grab his shoes except walking past them and unlocking the door instead.
“ baby where are you going — we need to talk about how we’re going to split the bills now that i— “
“ i’ll handle it “
“ shoto you can’t put everything on your dads card we’re not “ you let out a soft exhale “ we’re not children anymore “
“ i’ll pay for it all myself — and you can be my little housewife “ he scoffed as your expression grew sour “ it was so funny a moment ago right “
“ shoto i’m not gonna ask again where are you going “

Tumblr media
this is so stupid, schlatt kept trying to convince himself, adding yet another old, cheesy love song to the ever-growing playlist. shaking his head, he dragged his hands down his face. why the hell is he even doing this in the first place? it’s stupid, so, so stupid. looking back up at his computer screen, he looked over the songs he added to the playlist. there were about 20 songs, adding up to a little over an hour. he let his eyes drift to the left where jambo sat on his cat tower, watching him, judging him almost.
“the hell do you want, you little shit?” schlatt grumbled at the feline.
as if understanding what he said, jambo turned on his other side and stretched. now facing the window, he laid his head down to take a nap. schlatt grumbled lowly to himself again in frustration. if he stopped right now, deleted the playlist, you’d be none the wiser. it’s not like you knew what he was even doing in the first place. making a playlist for you was originally a fleeting thought, a small thing he pondered over after seeing people making a playlist for their own loved ones. not like you were his loved one. you two were just friends, a fact he was reminded of each time the two of you would speak to each other.
as he glared at the playlist, an alarm on his phone went off - he has to help someone record. dismissing the alarm, he exited out of spotify, trying to clear his head and get into character before joining a call with his friends.
schlatt didn’t get alone time until way later that night. between recording with his friends, recording for himself, and editing, he hadn’t gotten a chance to think about the playlist he was working on. that was, until he opened spotify to try and relax. he zoned out as he waited for the app to load and when he zoned back in, the playlist was glaring at him, taunting him. he was immediately whipped back into the mood he was in whilst making said playlist. annoyed. annoyed with himself. why can’t he just say he likes you like a normal person? why does he have to make you jump through hoops to try and figure it out?
he’s embarrassed. that’s why. embarrassed because the jschlatt has a silly little crush on someone. what is he, a stupid middle schooler again? he sighed out in frustration, much like he did earlier that day. his knee started bobbing, his thoughts racing more and more the longer he started at the playlist.
“for y/n”
without thinking (or because he couldn't stop thinking), he reached forward, grabbing his mouse. he clicked on the playlist and copied the link to it. he navigated his way to discord and into your guys’ dm’s. he paused as he saw the last messages the two of you shared:
night, schlatt, sleep well, love you! :)
yeah yeah you too
taking a deep breath, he pasted the link in the message bar. he paused again, wondering if this was actually a good idea. he sighed and shook his head, raising his hand to delete the message. right as he went to do so, jambo suddenly jumped onto his desk in hopes of getting attention. as he walked forward, he stepped on schlatt’s keyboard, pressing a couple keys in the process.
“jambo!” schlatt berated as he picked up the kitten, holding him up to his face so he could look into his wide eyes, “what the hell, man, you coulda really -”
schlatt stopped himself mid-sentence as his focus was suddenly turned to the screen behind jambo’s head. the little gremlin didn’t like how the attention wasn’t on him anymore as he meowed and tried to push his face against his owner’s. preoccupied, said owner just set him down, eyes glued to his monitor. fuck. fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. what the hell man! even though he was thinking about it, it’s not like schlatt was actually going to send the playlist to you! but now he did. the deed was done. he couldn’t just delete the message, you’d still get the notification and you'd definitely ask him about it. before he could think too much more into it, schlatt surged forward and turned off his computer. he pushed himself away from his desk, eyes wide and felt growing hotter by the second.
he slipped the headband out of his wavy hair and ran a hand through it. he sat there for a second, completely still with his fingers in his hair and forehead resting on his palm. he was broken out of his distressed trance when jambo meowed again at him. schlatt took a deep breath and ignored jambo’s cries for attention, opting to walk out of his recording room and into bed to try and sleep it off, deal with it in the morning.
-----
schlatt didn’t get much sleep. from his nervousness from how you’d react to jambo continuously meowing at him due to the lack of attention, schlatt laid awake, staring idly at the ceiling until he eventually fell asleep. he was awoken by the sound of his phone ringing, way too loud in his ear. not bothering to check who was calling, schlatt picked it up, expecting it to be a spam call.
what he wasn’t expecting, however, was your loud voice to exclaim, “schlatt!” right into his ear.
“fuckin - what?” he responded annoyed at being yelled at first thing in the morning. and that’s when he remembered. the playlist. there’s no way you’re not calling him about it.
“what the hell is this?” you asked, quieter upon hearing his groggy voice, knowing you had woken him up.
playing innocent, schlatt responded with, “what the hell is what?”
“this playlist.”
oh he’s most certainly fucked now. turning to lay on his back, he draped an arm over his eyes, part of him hoping that’d be enough to shield him from this embarrassing situation.
“just that. a playlist,” he responded carefully.
“well, yeah, but it’s, like...” you paused, searching for the right words.
“like what?” if he were sitting in a seat, he’d be on the edge of it, the anticipation killing him. he wasn’t sure if you liked it or not, your tone remaining mostly… curious.
“romantic. and shit,” you finally concluded, voice softer.
“yeah. what about it?” he was becoming defensive, ready for you to end your friendship right then and there.
but, you only chuckled. “it’s cute,” you teased.
okay. schlatt definitely wasn’t expecting that answer. he took his arm away from his face and moved it behind him, pushing himself to sit upright. eyes wide and face feeling hotter than ever, he responded, “c-cute?” he cursed himself inwardly for stuttering.
you chuckled again, “yeah. ‘s cute. i’d never expect something like this from you, schlatt,” - he didn’t know if that was a good or bad thing - “but i can’t say it’s unwelcomed. shall i make you a cheesy playlist in return?”
deciding you had enough fun with your teasing, schlatt gained confidence and responded, “only if you let me take you out on a date.”
“yeah? i’d love that,” your teasing tone was gone, a soft and genuine one replacing it.
“good. see you on saturday then?”
“see you then, big man.”
and with that, the call was ended. schlatt couldn’t help but stare down at his phone with a lovestruck expression, completely out of character for him, but he couldn’t help it. he felt a presence hop up on his bed and he turned to look at jambo, the culprit of all this, sitting there, looking at schlatt with his bug, dumb eyes. though he was the reason schlatt landed a date with you - someone he’d been pining over for a while, now - he couldn’t help but just -
“fuck off."

Nude Lipstick? Check.
Cute Heals? Already wearing them.
Wearing a dress that hugged your curves perfectly? Yes.
When you and Bucky got together, he promised you that he would take you out on a date at least once a month. It didn’t matter if you were both tired. He always wanted to take you out.
This time it was a bit different. Bucky was taking you to somewhere fancy. When you would ask him about the restaurant, he would simply try to ignore the question.
You were finishing up getting ready when Bucky was leaning on the doorframe staring at how beautiful you looked. He loved seeing you wearing your pajamas with ketchup stains, but whenever you would get ready, his mind would go wild. He had a smile on his face as his eyes were roaming all over your body. You were wearing a beautiful long black velvet dress that was a deep cut on the chest area. Bucky always thought that he was lucky to have you by his side. He was always grateful that you were.
Ring…. Ring…Ring…
Bucky’s phone started to ring. “I’ll be back, Doll. Steve is calling me.”
He goes to the bathroom downstairs and locks himself in it. He wanted to make sure that you were unable to hear his conversation with Steve. Luckily, you were playing music as you were getting ready.
“Buck, are you ready to do this?”
“Yes, I’m ready to ask her” he pauses as he places his hands on his pockets, holding an item. “I have everything planned out. She is going to love it” a small chuckle escapes his mouth as he starts pacing back and forth. “I’m a bit nervous about doing this.”
Steve takes a big breath, loud enough that Bucky was able to hear it through the phone. “There is nothing to be nervous about, Buck. You love her. Just remember all those things that you have told me, that you can’t wait to build a family with her, that you wouldn’t trade anything in this world for her”
Bucky started to breathe heavily as his steps were getting heavier. He knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with you, but he wasn’t sure If you wanted to do the same. The thought that your answer was going to be no, scared him.
He completely ignored everything that Steve was telling him. It’s white noise to him. He takes a couple of deep breaths. “I can do this. I have to go, Steve thanks for the pep talk. I’ll let you know when we leave so you and the rest can come to the house.”
Turning on the faucet, he throws cold water towards his face. “you got this, you can do it,” he whispered to himself.
Whenever you would get ready, Bucky would usually stay and watch you. He would compliment you and tell you sweet things to boost up your confidence. He didn’t care if he got a call. He would stay and let you listen in. So, it was odd that he left to talk to Steve about something.
Walking down the stairs, you notice that Bucky was at the bottom with his hand on the railing. Bucky’s eyes were digesting as he looked at you from head to toe. He was speechless. His eyes were sparkly, his mouth was hanging open slightly as he took in your appearance. To him, you were walking in slow motion. You looked so beautiful, he didn’t want to forget this moment.
Once you were at the last few steps of the staircase, Bucky extends his hand towards you. Without a second thought, you place your hand on his hand. “You look so beautiful, Doll.” He had a smile on his face.
Bucky was wearing a tailored black suit with a white shirt underneath, the two first buttons were unbuttoned, and his hair slicked back. Fuck, he looked good. “Babe, are you sure we can’t just stay in tonight and order pizza?” you knit your eyebrows together and push your bottom lip forward, making a pouty face.
“We have to go. The reservation is at 8pm” Bucky rolls his eyes as he gives a brief chuckle. He gets near you and places his metal hand on your waist meanwhile his other hand goes behind your head. He wanted to look at you up close. He wanted to see every little detail on your face. He mainly wanted to admire what was his. “Wait here. I have something to give you before we head out” He leans in to give you a forehead kiss.
Bucky heads to the kitchen to grab your gift. Your mind wonders what he could be talking to Steve about. Before your thoughts could continue, on the corner of your eye, you can see Bucky walking towards you with roses and a sunflower bouquet. Those were your favorite combination of flowers. “Bucky, you didn’t have too” your eyes start to water. You were so grateful to have him in your life.
Placing the bouquet on your arms, “I know I didn’t have to, but I wanted to. This is the first time we ever go out to a fancy place, and I want you to remember this” You get on your toes to give Bucky a kiss on his lips before you both head out.
Bucky held on the side of your dress. He didn’t want the tail of the dress to get dirty. When he opened the car door for you, he helped you by lifting the dress, making sure that it didn’t get trapped on the door.
Hungry eyes
One look at you and I can't disguise
On your drive to the restaurant, you shared laughs with stupid jokes you both would make. Every time your favorite song played, you and Bucky would sing your hearts out. You would dance. Meanwhile, Bucky would try to as he was driving.
A couple of minutes later, you were sitting across from Bucky at a very fancy restaurant. It was well decorated, and the ceilings were very tall with so many beautiful chandeliers. The place was dimly lit with a lot of candles.
You watched him look over the menu, and your mind wandered away from the food. You started to wonder when he had time to plan all of this and what was Steve’s call about. He was always with you, and if he wasn’t with you, he was with Steve and Sam. Your eyes were roaming all over him, from his steel-blue eyes to his metal hand. It brought you joy that he finally felt comfortable showing his metal arm in public.
“What is that beautiful mind thinking about?” Bucky asked you, breaking your inner monologue. Most of the time, he can tell what was going on in your mind. But due to him being nervous about what he is going to do later tonight, he couldn’t figure out what was going through your head.
Looking back down to the menu, “Oh, it’s nothing. Just wondering what I should get to eat.” You shrugged. With your index finger, you randomly pointed to something on it “hmm, chicken parmesan sounds good.”
Bucky shakes his head, and a lopsided grin forms on his face. “Ever since the day that I met you, you have never been a good liar,” he winks at you as he takes a drink from his cup of wine. “especially when it comes to lying to me.”
You take a big breath as you sighed “I’m just grateful” you didn’t want to throw any clues that you were suspicious of him. “that you are in my life, Buck.”
Bucky nodded, indicating that he felt the same way towards you. “I am too, doll. I have a feeling that you are a bit confused about why I brought you here. I just thought that it was time for us to go to a real fancy place” He looks up at you with wide eyes and places his hand on top of yours.
He was always thoughtful about the locations he took you. He always wanted to make sure you were comfortable and that you would enjoy being there. “It’s perfect, honey” you turn your hand so you can hold his hand.
He takes a big breath as he relieved his tense shoulders when he heard that you loved being here. “I should have brought you here sooner.”
“yes, you should of,” you said in a teasing voice.
Bucky sets down the menu and stares at you. “Mmm… you should be careful with that teasing,” He prompted you, leaning in towards you from across the table.
You grinned mischievously and leaned in as well, so you were closer to him “or what am I going to get punished later if I continue?” you asked in a low voice.
He had the same look you did as he nodded.
You gently bit your lower lip “oh, you wouldn’t dare,” you said slowly and seductively.
Placing his metal hand on your cheek, “Yeah, let’s see about that,” slowly moving it towards your neck, gently wrapping his metal fingers around it. He winked at you.
You both leaned back as the waiter came back to take your orders.
-----------------------------
Throughout dinner with Bucky, there were shared laughs between the two of you. He would tell you stories about how he and Steve were as kids. How he was tall meanwhile, Steve was short that would always put newspapers on the insides of his shoes to seem taller. You always loved hearing his stories.
"Bucky, I love you" you placed your hand on top of his.
Bucky always had a surprised look on his face whenever he heard you say 'I love you' to him. He never thought that at some point, he would hear those words from another person. His eyes were slowly filling up with tears. "I love you too. I-"
His phone started to ring. It was Steve again. Bucky takes a big breath. "I'll be right back, baby."
Bucky got up as fast as he could. He was heading to the restroom. Watching him walk away in such a hurry made you more suspicious of what he could be doing. You started to overthink about the things that he could be doing. He never acted like this. Your first instinct was to text Wanda and let her know about concerns
8:37 pm Wanda, Bucky has been acting a bit weird all day.
Minutes pass by, Wanda hasn't responded, and Bucky was still on the call with Steve.
8:54 pm Sorry, love, my phone has been acting up. Why do you think he is acting weird?
This was odd. Usually, Wanda would respond to your messages rapidly, but this time it took her time. Why was everyone acting weird?
Bucky was walking back and forth in the restroom. He was lucky that the restroom was only one stall. If not, people would think that he was going crazy. "Steve, is everything ready?" he started to heavily breathe at the thought that things might have to be moved to tomorrow. "Please, just tell me."
“Everything is just fine, give us- Peter, stop throwing rose petals everywhere and just place them on a line on the staircase- yes, Bucky, everything is fine” Steve wanted to sound confident, but everything wasn’t okay. He didn’t want Bucky to panic even more.
Wanda rushed to get Steve’s phone out of his hands. “Bucky, she is suspicious that something might be going on” there was a bit of silence. “Go out there and tell her nothing is going on.”
The fact that you were suspicious of the actions that he was doing threw him off his balance. Bucky’s mind went blank unsure what he needed to do next. He froze into place.
Meanwhile, Bucky was spaced out. Steve was on speaker.
“Peter and Sam put down the fucking rose petals. Stop making a mess. Please, you two can tackle or attack each other later.”
“Bucky, are you still there?”
“See what you guys did. Bucky froze, and he is probably panicking” Steve sounded annoyed with what was going on.
“Cyborg, do you need me to Amazon Prime you a charger for that brain of yours to compute again” Sam yelled loud enough Bucky was able to hear him.
“Can you all just shut up? I should have brought the girls instead of you three bird brains” Wanda sounded frustrated and just wanted the decorating done.
“excuse me, I am-“
Bucky hung up the phone. He couldn’t handle hearing them argue anymore. He needed to calm down before heading back to you. He takes out the box that he had been holding on to for months. He didn’t want to open it. He was just looking at it.
You were scrolling through Instagram, Twitter, any social media platform to distract your brain as you were waiting for Bucky to come back.
“Hey, let’s get out of here” he grabs your hand and pulls you out of your seat. He placed money on the table to pay for both meals and tip the waiter.
You both were speed walking towards the entrance. Every 5 seconds, he would look back at you to see your reaction. You were looking at the ceiling at how beautiful it was. Every chandelier was different. None of them were the same.
“So, where are we going now?” you tilted your head as you gave him a brief smile. With what has been happening all day, nothing can’t surprise you anymore.
“We aren’t going anywhere. We are going for a drive around town.”
As Bucky was driving, you would occasionally lay your head on his shoulder. It was a quiet ride. Every time there would be a red light, he would gently tilt your head towards his direction so he can give you a kiss on the lips.
Looking through the car window’s you notice that Bucky was driving further away from the city. You wondered why, but you didn’t want to ask him questions. You knew that whatever place he was going to take you, it was going to be meaningful.
Turning around to see how far away you both were, you weren’t able to notice the city anymore. There was an occasional light through the drive but not often. Bucky pulls over to a random empty parking lot. He leans in forwards and takes off his jacket, wrapping you around it, so you weren’t cold.
Bucky presses the button to open the sunroof and turns off the car. You started to recline your seat, so you have a better view of the sky. Bucky did the same. He lifts up with his arm so you can lay your head on his chest.
Staring at the night sky. You weren’t able to see nor count the stars due to light pollution. But it didn’t matter to you. All you cared about was spending time with Bucky.
Placing your hand on one of the jacket’s pockets, you felt a rectangular-shaped box. “aha, I found what you have been hi-“ you take the box out of the pocket. Bucky widens his eyes, thinking that you have taken out that one specific box. “oh, it’s just your phone” there was a sound of disappointment in your voice.
“You think I’m hiding something don’t you” he laughs a little.
“You’ve been acting all weird today. Of course, I think you are hiding something” you push your lower lip forward and knit your eyebrows together. You wanted to see if making that face would make Bucky talk.
Bucky places his left hand on your chin tilting your head upwards, so you can see him more clearly. He gently takes a bite of your lip and pulls it towards his direction, closing your lips and his lips together. He pulls away for a moment. “I’m not hiding anything, Doll. I promise.” Slamming his lips back to yours, not giving you a chance to respond back. He slips his tongue into your mouth in a demanding way.
He takes your hair and moves it behind your shoulders. Moving his lips to your cheeks down to your neck. He tilts your head slightly, having full access to your neck as he continues to nibble on it. “Let’s go to the backseat, Bunny,” he whispers into your ear seductively.
You have always liked Bucky’s car, since the backseats had a ton of room. He was quick to help you move to the back seats, and he followed you. The moment you both were in the backseats, his lips were pressed against yours. Meanwhile, his hands were working on the zipper at the back of your dress. The hastiness making it clear that he wanted it off of you as soon as possible.
As soon as the straps were falling off your shoulders, Bucky cups your breast massaging them. You sneak your hands to unbutton his shirt. You started to move your lips towards his neck and grab his shirt pressing your lips against it, leaving lipstick all over the shirt's collar. You gave him a smirk as your hands traveled down to his pants, unbuckling his belt and zipper. Earning a gasp from him when your hand slightly rubbed against his hard length.
Bucky notices that you were struggling, so he moves his hand from your breast to push his pants and underwear lower. He places his hands underneath your dress, pulling it downward, exposing your breasts and your torso to him. Cupping his hands on your ass and massaging them. You took your arms around his neck as you climbed to sit on his lap. "All night, I've been craving to do this to you, Bunny" Bucky smirks as he sneaks his fingers down to your heat, pushing your panties aside. He rubs his fingers against your lips, circling them around your clit a few times before gently taking two of his fingers into you.
You leaned in forwards, placing your lips against Bucky's shoulder, biting his skin as you moaned, trying to be quiet. "fuck, Bucky."
Thrusting his fingers inside of you, he smirked to himself, knowing that he can make you into such a needy mess. He nibbled your earlobe as he slowly pulls his fingers out of you and proceeds to lick them as he stares deep into your eyes.
You stroke his cock a couple of times before moving it to your entrance. You let it go in slowly, letting out a quiet moan as you did. You rolled your hips and bounced on his lap in a matter of seconds.
Bucky groaned, his hands moved to your hips, digging his fingers on your skin. Occasionally he would move your hips to control your movements. He threw his head back, closing his eyes. He wanted to feel your walls clenching around his cock and hear your voice moan and occasionally whimper.
When you released a very loud moan, he had known that he had just hit your spot. Causing him to press his lips onto yours, slipping your tongue into his mouth as you tried to control how loud you were being. Bucky swifts your body so that you were now lying down. Your legs were wrapped around his waist as he continues to thrust inside of you.
You could hardly stay quiet. Placing your hand on the back of his head, you pull him down for a kiss, moaning into his mouth. Moving his metal thumb playing with your clit. Breaking the kiss, Bucky places his other hand on your mouth, attempting you to be quiet. "Bunny, are you close?" he grunted into your ear. You nodded rapidly as you threw your head backward. "okay, wait for me. I want to cum at the same time as you do." he mumbled against your collarbone. He started to thrust into you sharply, and his fingers this circling against your clit. You moaned loudly against his shoulder, your legs tightening around his waist and your walls clenching down around his cock. Causing you to bit down on your lower lip as you got closer to your climax. With every thrust that he went in deeper, hitting your spot. After a couple more thrusts, you both reach your climax at the same time.
You both knitted your eyebrows as you both moaned together. You two had to catch your breaths and come down from your high. Bucky pulled out of you and immediately went over to grab the tissues to help you clean yourself.
The window of the car was fogged up, and your makeup was running down your face. “Look at my messy bunny” Bucky takes a tissue and tries to help you clean up your makeup.
-----------------------------
Driving home, Bucky completely forgot about the surprise he had for you.
Walking into your house, you see a trail of rose petals from the entrance to the staircase. "Bucky?" you had a confused look on your face.
"Let's go upstairs and take a bath" he forms a smile on his face.
Heading to the bedroom, the trial of roses continued. You simply ignored it but deep down, it made you happy that Bucky planned this when we got home. You grab your pj's and his. Meanwhile, Bucky was preparing a bath. You stared at yourself in front of the mirror. Wow, you were such a mess.
Bucky was lighting up the candles that were in the bathroom and placing them around. When preparing the bath, he makes sure it's at the temperature you like and filled with bubbles. He places the box next to the bathtub making sure that he could reach it when he needed to get it.
As you were heading to the bathroom, that same trail of roses lead to it. Opening the bathroom door, you notice the path ended. You see Bucky surrounded with lit candles and with the scent of roses. You walk up to Bucky, getting on your toes to give him a brief kiss on the lips "was this something you were trying to hide all day?" he nods in agreement "ha, I knew it" you lean on to give him a kiss on his cheek "I love it Bucky."
"I knew you would, Doll. Now turn around. I want to help you put up your hair," turning around, agreeing on letting him put your hair in a ponytail or in a bun. He was always so gentle he didn't want to hurt you, not tug your hair too hard whenever he would do that.
You start to undress, and Bucky does the same. He lowers his body into the bathtub. He takes your hand, helping you lower your body onto the tub.
He wraps his arms around you as you lean onto him. He nibbles on your ear and kisses the back of your head.
You grab a handful of bubbles and try to throw them in his direction. "Hey, you got bubbles on my eye," he complained as he grabs a couple of bubbles and rubs them on your face. You both were uncontrollably laughing.
"Doll, we should play a game" he gently pushes you forwards, exposing your back to him. "You need to guess what I'm trying to say, okay."
You give him a brief nod agreeing that you wanted to play with him.
Bucky takes a big breath as he knows that he is about to ask you, and no matter what your answer was going to be, there is no turning back.
With the fingertips from his right hand, he starts to spell out 'Marry Me.'
"wait, wait, Bucky, spell it again. I'm not sure what that word is"
Once again, he spells out 'Marry Me' against your skin.
You were still unsure of what it was, you shifting your body now being able to face him. "I know this is cheating, but I have to know what you spelled out" you chuckled a little.
"yes, that is cheating, doll" he takes a big breath as a big smile on his face forms. "Will you Marry Me?"
You froze into place, trying to process what he just said. "Do you mean that?" your eyebrows rose, and you had a smile on your face.
"Of course, I mean it" he takes a big gulp before saying anything else, "I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to make pancakes at 2 in the morning with you. I- I just want you."
"I-"you lean in forwarding, closing in the gap between you and him. Wrapping your arms around him, you stare at his beautiful ocean blue eyes. You get on top of him, sitting on his lap.
He places his hands around your waist. He was searching all over your face for any hints of you saying yes or no. "so is this is a yes?" his voice got small and a bit shaky.
Leaning in forward to give him a brief kiss, "yes, Bucky. I do want to marry you."
Bucky sighs in relief "you have no idea how relieved I am now" he chucked a little bit.
Placing your hand on his cheek, "you have no idea how happy I am, and I can't wait to have little munchkins with you," you scrunched your nose as you smiled.
He grabs the box that he placed outside of the tub and opens it revealing a stunning heart-shaped diamond with a silver band. Bucky grabs your hand, placing the ring on the fourth finger of your left hand. "I can't wait either, Mrs. Barnes."

STRAY KIDS EVERYWHERE ALL AROUND THE WORLD.
Tumblr media
"Chris, baby, please."
It's been two hours, nearing three, since Chris decided to give you the silent treatment. The cause of your current suffering rooted from the events that took place last night.
A college friend of yours happened to be visiting the city, and what better way to celebrate a rare occasion than dressing up and going for a girl's night out with a bunch of your other friends. Chris happily agreed to let you go, he didn't need much convincing since he trusted you with everything and that included you getting home in one piece.
As the late hours of the night passed and shifted over to the wee hours of the morning, Chris grew worried, checking his phone for the nth time as he expected a call or text from you to reassure him that you were fine, or that you were at least still alive somewhere.
Fortunately, he managed to get a hold of your situation through one of your friends, credits to Jisung for grabbing her number that one time you guys set them up for a date.
"Hyung, she said that (y/n) got into a cab ten minutes ago," Jisung explained over the phone. "Her phone also died, so that's probably the reason why you haven't heard from her," he added.
"Alright, got it. Thanks, Ji."
Strike one.
Your drunk self thought that it was a good idea to call for a cab, even declining your girlfriend's offer to drive you home. You insisted that you were fine and that you would only derail their way home since your apartment's route leads to the opposite direction. So, in your semi-intoxicated state, you hopped into a cab and made your way home.
Strike two.
You came home last night, struggling to keep a certain level of sobriety. Heels in one hand and your clutch in the other. You weren't completely hammered, but it was still enough to piss Chris off as he took in your drunken state.
Strike three.
Nevertheless, Chris patiently took care of you. He helped you out of your clothes, took your makeup off for you, and tucked you in bed with him.
You could've gotten away with what happened, until your hungover self decided to betray you.
When Chris sat you down for breakfast, he managed to ease in the happenings of last night, carefully bringing it up as to not agitate you or make you feel like he's blaming you for going out and having fun.
He was just worried, especially having known that you went home all by yourself without even contacting him.
"Baby, you could've borrowed one of your friends' phone and asked me to come pick you up," Chris sighed as he reached out for your hand, placing his on top of yours, his fingers tracing circles on your skin.
"I know and I'm sorry, but can you just scold me later?" you said, your tone a little harsher than you intended it to be, probably due to the lingering headache and side effects of your drinks last night. You felt like your skull was being split into two and you just wanted to eat and recover in silence.
"Babe, I'm not scolding you. I was just-"
You cut Chris off. "Alright, I get it, you were worried but I took care of myself. So let's just argue later, yeah?" you snapped.
And you're out.
Upon hearing your reply, Chris' jaw clenched, visibly appearing offended and irritated. He retracted his hand from yours, opting to cross his arms over his chest.
You bit your tongue when the words you spat out finally settled in. It sounded wrong and you definitely shouldn't have said that. You readied yourself for the argument that was about to ensue, but nothing came.
"Okay."
That was all he said before he stood up and left.
Your eyes widened at the sudden realization that slapped you back into reality, the ugly outcome of your sudden outburst.
You were about to get up and follow Chris to apologize, however, the sudden throbbing pain in your head disabled you from getting out of your seat. Instead, you were forced to sit back down and wallow in guilt.
And that's how you ended up getting the silent treatment.
You left your boyfriend alone for a few hours, hoping that his anger would dissipate by the time that your hungover got better. But much to your dismay, he wasn't having it with you.
"Baby, can I come in?" you knocked on the door of Chris' home studio.
Silence.
"Chris, baby, please," you tried again, but you were still met with silence. You let out a sigh as you ambled back towards the living room, deciding to just give him space and talk it out whenever he's ready.
Chris was naturally a forgiving person, a little tougher on his members, but a complete sweetheart when it comes to you. So when he gave you the silent treatment for the very first time that day, you didn't know what to do.
So, you waited.
A couple of hours passed, three and a half, now, to be exact, you heard Chris' door unlock. You immediately perked up at the sound, quickly scurrying on your feet to meet him.
"Chris, I'm sorry," you apologized with your head hung low, eyes on the ground, and fingers fiddling with the hem of your shirt.
Nothing. Nothing, but the cold breeze of Chris passing by, giving you no due attention. He sauntered towards the kitchen and opened the fridge, paying more attention to the cold food items that were displayed in front of him.
How you wish you were the half-eaten cheesecake now, huh?
Having enough with his torturous act, you were set on using the two tricks you had up your sleeves -- 1) faking an injury, as petty as that sounds, you were desperate, and 2) luring him with something he likes, be it an innocent gesture or a daring one, you would practically do anything at this point.
With your first plan in mind, you crept up behind him and positioned yourself near the edge of the marble kitchen island, placing your hip at the sharp corner so that it would appear as if you bumped against it.
From a third person's point of view, you probably looked stupid, scratch that, you did look stupid, but you were set on breaking Chris' silent streak.
"Ah!" you yelped in pain, hands quickly coming up to clutch your right side. You dropped on the ground, still maintaining your hold on your "injured" torso.
As soon as you cried out in pain, Chris hurried to your side.
"Baby, are you okay?" he asked with a worried expression plastered on his face. His cold demeanor immediately melting once he saw you clutching your side. "What happened, babygirl?" he crouched down to meet your level.
"I accidentally hit the edge of the counter," you said. "Come here, baby," Chris placed your arms around his neck as he scooped you up from the ground, carrying you bridal style towards the living room.
"Show me where it hurts, love," Chris ordered as he sat you down with him. He carefully moved you on his lap, making you straddle him.
"Right here," you pointed towards a random patch of skin on your right side. Chris placed his hand over the supposedly injured area, gently soothing it with the warmth that radiated from his palm.
Adding the icing on the cake, you hissed in pain as his hand came in contact with your skin. "Shh, it's okay, baby. I got you," Chris cooed as he planted a kiss on your cheek, in hopes of making you feel better.
He lifted your shirt up a bit, allowing him to inspect for any cuts or damage to your skin. "Do you want me to go get an ice pack?" Chris offered. "No, it's fine," you replied.
"Alright, just tell me if need anything," Chris responded as he leaned down to press a chaste kiss on your exposed skin, tugging your shirt back down as he pulled away.
You nuzzled your face into his neck, in an attempt to conceal the grin that was forming on your lips. Completely fooled by your actions, Chris continued rubbing your side as he whispered sweet nothings in your ear.
"Does it hurt anywhere else, baby?" Chris asked and you nodded. "Here," you pulled away from him and pointed towards your chest. He shot you a puzzled look, confused as to why your chest would hurt when you claimed that you bumped your side.
"Because I was trying to apologize to my boyfriend a couple of hours ago, but instead, he gave me the silent treatment," you pouted.
Chris bursted out in laughter as he heard your response.
"It's true. I followed him around like a lost puppy, but he locked himself inside his studio. Totally unfair and uncalled for," you continued and Chris shook his head in disbelief, his laughter coming to a stop as he calmed down.
"I could say the same thing about what happened last night," Chris challenged, raising one eyebrow at you.
"I'm sorry. I know I was being stupid. I should've called you or at least shot you a message from my friend's phone to let you know that I was coming home late. I just thought that if I called, I was going to end up bothering you, considering that it was such an ungodly hour," you explained, fiddling with the string of his hoodie.
"(Y/n), you could never be a bother to me," Chris said, "And did you honestly think that I could sleep knowing that you were out there?"
"I was so worried about you. Thank Jisung for having one of your friend's number because I was this close to losing it," Chris stated.
"I know. I'm really sorry," you pressed a kiss to his lips. "I promise I won't do it again, forgive me?" you added, pecking his lips once more.
"I can't stay mad at you," Chris let out a defeated sigh. "Of course. I forgive you, babygirl," he gave you a small smile.
You cheered and pulled him in for a hug, momentarily forgetting about your said injury.
"Do you feel better now?" Chris teased as he poked your sides, making you jolt in surprise. "Christopher!" you squealed, bursting in a fit of giggles as you realized that you've been caught red-handed.
Well, at least the intentions of your plan worked.
"You know what they say, desperate times call for desperate measures," you shrugged and Chris chuckled in amusement. He leaned in and gave you a kiss.
"You're lucky you're cute."
